government owns nearly all aspects of society. The government controlled everything from means
of production, property, to even media. The fall of communism throughout the world began in the
late 1980s. Since the liberalization of the two countries, Russia and Poland have come to long ways.
After independence, both countries faced many struggles but are now considered to be powerful
middle–class nations today. Post–communist is where former communist states undergo a transition
both socially and economically. Before 1989, there has never been a shift to a post–communist

allied himself with the American and the British, making sure that Hitler and the Germans would

revenge and reputation was more important than the lives of the population since 8.6 million

Over time the United States has had many different presidents, each serving one or two terms in
office and that same tradition still continues today. Once elected the president spends the majority of
his time in the White House with his family while serving the people of his country, and when his

than their share of problems and conflicts of interest whether they are domestic or international. To

HUAC was created by the federal government in 1938 to investigate the subversive activities of
citizens belonging to Communist organizations. The Committee had powers to subpoena and hold
witnesses in contempt of congress, punishable by imprisonment. Following WW II, as anti–
communist sentiment rose in the U.S., the Committee enjoyed strong popular support. Being a
Communist was not a crime so most of the people convicted served sentences for perjury or
contempt of Congress. Another tool used to punish citizens suspected of communist affiliations was
a practice called the Blacklist. Having one's name on the Hollywood Blacklist guaranteed that
person would be unable to find work in the motion picture industry. Hollywood screenwriter
Michael Wilson was called before the HUAC in 1951. When he refused to testify, his name was
added to the Hollywood Blacklist. Writing under a pseudonym, Wilson continued to write but after
1951 never received credit, during his lifetime , for his screenplays including two Oscar Winning

citizens of Poland, to change Poland to what he believed was best for the people and took
responsibility for his actions and in doing so, he aided Poland in becoming a free and better

Although the 1956 Hungarian Revolution only lasted for a short period, there are many who believe
that this revolution was the first step in decreasing the Soviet Union's control over the Hungarian
government. Despite the lack of an immediate change, the 1956 Hungarian Revolution had a major
long–term effect by mobilizing the Hungarian civil society for future conflicts that took place
between the Hungarians and the Soviet government. Towards the end of the Second World War the
Soviet army came and occupied Hungary, and remained there until 1991. From the end of World
War Two until the Cold War ended in 1991 the relationship between Hungary and the Soviet Union

I believe that one of the main motivations for the 1956 Hungarian revolution came as a result of the
lack of a legitimate government in Hungary. Since the war ended and the Soviets began their
occupation of Hungary, the Hungarian citizens were being ruled by a government, which they did
not choose. Although the Soviet Union understood that in it was necessary for the Hungarian
citizens to accept the government, the Soviets also wanted to ensure the existence of a communist
government in Hungary; thus they tried to ensure the victory of the Communist Party. By creating
the coalition and silencing the political opponents to the Communist Party, the Soviets alienated the
Hungarian citizens and built the basis for the tensions, which later erupted into the 1956 Hungarian
Revolution. Another political aspect that served as an additional motivation for the 1956 Hungarian

It was a secret plan of the Canadian government to round up and imprison Canadian citizens who
were communists or affiliated with communism. This plan, in hindsight, an indication of the
extremes the Canadian government was willing to go through in its fight against communism
(Chisholm 77).
This type of secretive government program certainly defines the contradictions of a so–called
democratic country, which has continually propagandized the idea of equal rights and the right of
individuals to have different political ideas. The role of the RCMP actually presents a type of "police
state" mentality that projects a threat to democracy as a part of human rights violations committed
by the Canadian government during this time. The Cold Ear ideology of "capitalism versus
communism" certainly created a hyper–reactionary dualism in Canadian politics, which viewed
anyone who supported communism as an enemy of the state. PROFUNC certainly defines a
concerted effort by government officials and the RCMP to monitor Canadian communists with the
future potential of having them imprisoned during a time of war with the Soviet Union.
Another problem with the PROFUNC program was that it was being used for monitoring and
surveillance of worker's unions and other anti–capitalist groups that did not directly support the
