2. Imagination
According to Leopardi imagination
is the first source of human
happiness.
According to Keats imagination is
like a dream which becomes
true.“The imagination may be
compared to Adam’s dream - he
awoke and found it truth”.
“L’immaginazione è la
prima fonte della felicità
umana. Quanto più questa
regnerà nell’uomo, tanto
più l’uomo sarà felice”.
(G.Leopardi)
“Heard melodies are sweet, but
those unheard are sweeter…”
(Ode on a Grecian Urn)
“What the imagination seizes as a
beautiful thing, that must be beautiful”
(J.Keats)
4. INFINITY IN SPACE
“ma sedendo e mirando
interminati spazi di là
da quella, e sovraumani
silenzi, e profondissima
quiete là nel pensier mi
fingo”
INFINITY IN TIME
“e come il vento tra
queste piante, io quello
infinito silenzio a questa
voce vo comparando: e
mi sovvien l’eterno”
Leopardi, while gazing endless spaces
beyond the hedge, abandones himself to
a soft loss into the infinite time and space
5. “L’infinito”
(by G. Leopardi)
Sempre caro mi fu quest'ermo colle,
E questa siepe, che da tanta parte
Dell'ultimo orizzonte il guardo esclude.
Ma sedendo e mirando, interminati
Spazi di là da quella, e sovrumani
Silenzi, e profondissima quiete
6. Infinity in Keats
KEATS celebrates ART as the only way that can
make BEAUTY eternal, in opposition with the
experiences of life, which is subjected to time,
delusion, death.
The contemplation of a Grecian urn gives birth
to such a strong feeling in the poet that his mind
gets lost and is pushed into the infinite time, into
Eternity.
7. Ode on a Grecian Urn
... Cold Pastoral!
When old age shall this generation waste,
Thou shalt remain, in midst of other woe
Than ours, a friend to man, to whom thou
say’st,
“Beauty is truth, truth beauty, - that is all
Ye know on earth, and all you need to know”.
8. The URN embodies an ideal of absolute and
everlasting Beauty.
It is the only truth to which man can aspire.
