Disagreement, struggle, Fight, Incompatibility, Clash, variance, Dispute etc.
A serious disagreement or argument.
# Conflict is defined as a clash between individuals arising out of
a difference in thought process, attitudes, understanding,
interest, requirements and even some perceptions…
Concept of Conflict…
 Conflict can be considered as an expression of hostility, negative
attitudes, aggression, rivalry and misunderstanding.
 Conflict may emerge between different organizations or within
organization and their social and political environments.
Definitions…
Conflict can be defined as an expressed
struggle between at least two
interdependent parties, who perceive that
incompatible goals, scarce resources, or
interference from others are preventing
them from achieving their goals
General Causes of conflict
 Scarcity of resources (finance, equipment, facilities, etc.)
 Diffèrent attitudes, values or perceptions.
 Disagreements about needs, goals, priorities and interests
 Poor communication
 Poor or inadequate organizational structure
 Lack of teamwork
 Lack of clarity in roles and responsibilities

 Intra- Individual conflict: an intrapersonal
conflict occurs within an individual in situations
in which he or she must choose between two
Alternatives
 Inter individual conflict: is conflict between two
or more individuals.. The person experiencing
this conflict may experience opposition in
upward, downward, horizontal, or diagonal
communication
Group level conflict:
Group level conflict
 Intra group conflict: It refers to conflict between two or more
members of the same group or team.
 Intergroup conflict: It refers to disagreements or
differences between the members of two or more
groups or their representatives over authority, territory,
and resource
Organization level conflict
 Intra organizational conflict: The conflict arises within various
levels and departments of organization. Viz. English
Department vs chemistry department of the same institution.
 Inter organizational conflict: The conflict arises between the
organizations. Viz. Head office and subordinate offices.
Effects of Conflict
Conflict has both Positive and Negative effect.
It can be positive when it encourages
creativity, new looks at old, the clarification of
points of view, and the development of human
capabilities to handle interpersonal differences.
Conflict can be negative when it creates
resistance to change, establishes turmoil in
organisation or interpersonal relations fosters
distrust, builds a feeling of defeat, or widens
the chasm of misunderstanding.
