2. Codes and Conventions
In order to lure my target audience, I had to first do some research into other magazines that followed
the same target audience. Using said research, I could then adapt some of the conventions and use
them in my own magazine (giving a more professional look).
The house style etc. were all considered before I started creating my magazine. This meant that I had
a clear understanding of what to expect and what I wanted inside my magazine.
In particular, I researched Kerrang! as it was very similar to the magazine I was trying to create. It
allowed me to take some of the fully functional and fully working parts of the magazine and use them
in my own.
3. How I Appealed to My Age Group
I aimed my age group at the sort of 16-24 age range. This is the same age range as Kerrang! I took many
things from Kerrang! that I believe helped me achieve a magazine that fitted this group. I used very
energetic and loud colours to target the younger, more energetic age group.
I also used a lot of distressed looks such as in text boxes etc. I believe that this added to the rebellious
feel that many youngsters have.
I also gave an artist in my double page spread that I believe would appeal as a role model to younger
people. I made him look relatable in the picture and his interview was also rebellious with the use of
swear-words etc. I think this gained a lot of respect for the magazine from the age-group.
I also used a lot of modern conventions such as banners and lures as I belive this will fit in with the
modern society and there for the younger generations.
4. How I Attracted Both Males + Females
I used colours that were all not gender-specific. I used Reds, Oranges and also a few Blue highlights. I
got the red colour scheme from Kerrang! as this seems to be what they often use.
I tried to make my magazine have neutral fonts and layouts etc. to make sure that a gender was not
put off when the saw it. I used plain san-serif fonts to make sure that both genders were attracted
compared to the more ‘girly’ over-the-top serif fonts. I also made sure that the fonts weren’t too
‘boyish’.
5. How I Addressed My Audience
Language:
- I used informal language making the interview feel more intimate for the reader.
- I used swear words so the magazine could be associated with friend-like talk.
- I made the magazine sound like it was personally addressing the reader.
Photos:
- I showed artists that would attract the younger reader age.
- I used different artists with different styles to attract a wider audience.
Competitions:
- I offered a competition to see ‘Blank-264’ to attract the lovers of the band.
- I also offered a ‘free deck’ with every annual sub.
6. Maslow Hierarchy Of Needs
I give my readers the sense of
belonging and love because I
address them directly.
I give my reader safety and
security as they can use my
magazine to escape from
everyday life.
I gave the readers self-actualization
as the ‘role-models’ inside the
magazine will hopefully inspire them
to try and achieve their goals.
Hopefully I make my readers feel happy
and that they get the necessary factors
to having physiological health from
reading my magazine.
