The target audience for the magazine is males ages 16-25, as the author is in that age bracket and wants to feature the rock and roll lifestyle. Some bands appealing to females, like Paramore, are also included to attract a wider audience without being dominated by female interests. The overall tone remains male-dominated but inclusive of women.
To attract this audience, the front cover features a well-dressed model unlike a stereotypical rocker, with text enhanced through techniques like drop shadows. Established musicians are also featured to compete with larger magazines on popular content.
1. Who would be the audience for your media product?
2. My target audience for the magazine is for people around the age of 16 – 25. This is because I am in this age bracket and I feel as if know what people this age want too see in a music magazine. Also throughout my magazine others bands are mentioned and they aim there music towards the same age group. My magazine is going to be based at selling itself towards the men’s market. I feel this is important because the interviews and stories are more about the rock and roll life style. My target audience is male however I have added some bands that some females may enjoy, for instance ‘Paramore.’ I have done this because I feel that by just appealing to the male market you are losing out on half of the market. Overall this is still a male dominated magazine that a women can relate to and may enjoy. I believe its hard to make a music magazine that both sexes will enjoy because both sexes are proven to have big differences in music choice. So I have tried to make a magazine that anyone can pick up.
4. I used Mis en scene to attract my audience. I did this by creating what looked like the normal rock magazine with the house style and other images that were used. But to grab the reader I used a model that looked like he didn't belong on a rock magazine. He was well dressed and looked clean cut unlike the stereotypical rocker. The image of my model dominated my front cover this was to show the reader that the main articles were going to be about the new boy on the block. I also tried to attract the audience by using different methods and techniques. For example I would write something but then think is that clear enough for the reader , if not I would put a filled box over the text to help the text stand out. I also used drop shadows which helped the text look like its jumping off the page. As I have already spoken about I used a medium shot of the model this helped in once again showing his dominance to the reader. I also tried to attract my audience by using already established musicians in the industry. I made the decision to do this because I feel if I want to compete with the bigger magazines such as ‘NME’ and ‘Q’ you are going to need to talk about the bigger bands.
