1. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the music magazine? By Scott Spencer 7194
2. PRELIMINARY TASK In my preliminary I was faced with a new programme I had not used before – Indesign. I tried my best to follow the conventions of a school magazine and picked up the use of the software quite easily. However after gaining peer feedback I got back improvements which help me to further follow conventions. I also got positive feedback which made me feel more confident in starting my music magazine. I was also faced with Photoshop which i have used before, this advantage allowed me to get straight into editing although there was a lot I had to learn.
3. IMPROVEMENTS FOR PRE-LIM Make sure the costume and smartness represents the ethos you want to give off to the audience. When taking images, tell your model exactly how they should look including facial expressions. Edit small things out of the background as they are noticeable, e.g. Pen on the whiteboard. Pick the number of models in one image carefully. Mise-en-scene, positioning within the frame could be improved. Make sure your masthead is large in comparison to coverlines. Make sure coverlines do not cover up the image.
4. MUSIC MAGAZINE After gaining this peer feedback I took all of the advice into account and made sure my music magazine followed all of the conventions and looked believable. I was much more confident in using Indesign and Photoshop and still managed to expand my knowledge of the two programmes. I decided to do much more research into music magazines than I did into school magazines to make sure i could create a believable magazine.
5. IMPROVEMENTS PUT INTO ACTION When taking my images I made sure that the costume represented the ethos and genre of the music magazine, I chose black clothing to represent the genre of rock and also made them wear t-shirts to make them informal. I also, when taking images, told my model exactly what to do, I told my female to show a forced expression to connote the genre of music, I told my male models to fold there arms and too look serious to further the ethos of the magazine. I edited out small noticeable things like a blue bag in the second double page spread image. The amount of people in each image was thought about, four was to represent the band ‘Nickelback’ and one female was used as any others would be irrelevant. I took into consideration Mise-en-scene and positioned my models much more effectively and centred them. I made sure my masthead ‘BASS’ was the largest piece of text to establish the brand identity. I also made sure my coverlines did not cover up my image and also made sure my my main coverline was placed within the sweet spot.
