 Harappan Civilisation(First site)
 Harappa was exacavated in 1921
 Mohanjo-daro (Mound of dead) in 1922
 First Urban civilisation in South Asia
 Contemporaneous with the civilisation of
Mesopotamia and Egypt
 Part of proto-history of India
 Belongs to Bronge age
 The early/Pre-Harappan phase(c.3200-
2600BCE)
 Mature Harappan phase(c.2600-1900BCE)
 Late Harappan phase(c.1900-1300BCE)
 Harappa had attracted the attention of a British traveller Charles Merson as
early as in 1826.
 Also noticed by colonel Burns when he went to meet Maharaja Ranjit Singh in
1831
 Alexander Cunningham inspected the site in 1853 and 1857
 In 1856 Harappan ruins were excavated to meet the demand for bricks to lay
railway line between Karachi and Lahore
 First serious efforts were made by Daya Ram Sahani under the leadership of
John Marshall
 A colony of Sumerian people or its roots lie deep in the Indian soil
 Sekeleton and skulls belong to a number of ethnic groups such as:
proto-Australoid,Alpinoid,Mongoloid and Dravid
 Multiracial civilisation-Rangnath Rao
 People have flat nose,found in the people of Punjab
 Dravidian civilisation:Dr Wheeler

Indus valley civilisation

  • 2.  Harappan Civilisation(First site)  Harappa was exacavated in 1921  Mohanjo-daro (Mound of dead) in 1922  First Urban civilisation in South Asia  Contemporaneous with the civilisation of Mesopotamia and Egypt  Part of proto-history of India  Belongs to Bronge age
  • 3.  The early/Pre-Harappan phase(c.3200- 2600BCE)  Mature Harappan phase(c.2600-1900BCE)  Late Harappan phase(c.1900-1300BCE)
  • 4.  Harappa had attracted the attention of a British traveller Charles Merson as early as in 1826.  Also noticed by colonel Burns when he went to meet Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1831  Alexander Cunningham inspected the site in 1853 and 1857  In 1856 Harappan ruins were excavated to meet the demand for bricks to lay railway line between Karachi and Lahore  First serious efforts were made by Daya Ram Sahani under the leadership of John Marshall
