2. Acknowledgement of first peoples
In the spirit of reconciliation, the University of Southern Queensland
recognises that we are meeting on country for which the Jagera and the
Turrbul people and their Elders, have been custodians for many centuries and
on which they have performed age-old ceremonies of celebration, initiation
and renewal. We acknowledge their living culture and unique role in the life
of this region and offer our deep appreciation for their contribution to, and
support of, our academic enterprise and our meeting today.

anxieties and fear
• Providing rare or impossible excursions
for online students
• Pre-exposing students to highly
technical environments to accelerate
their learning
• Supporting and sharing our world-class
research expertise
• Helping international and online
students orientate to our physical
campus
13. WHY BOTHER?
Community of Inquiry
Garrison, Anderson, Archer (2000)
• Teacher Presence
• Social Presence
• project themselves
socially and emotionally
as “real” people
• Cognitive Presence
• Transcript Analysis Tools
13AAEE Workshop December 09, 2019 – USQ HIVE
14. Community of Inquiry - proposed
Armellini and Stefani (2016)
• Social Presence (is a major
leveler)
• Teacher Presence &
Cognitive Presence have
become social
The lightboard becomes one
additional tool to enhance
our social presence, which
turns out to be a key
determining factor in the COI

The USQ HIVE stands on the shoulders of USQ Technology Demonstrators, which has reached over 30,000 USQ students through early initiatives into spaces like the vacation career fair and the iSee Moot law court VR experience, the USQ Lightboard, as well as broad consultation with staff and students … USQ was ready for an inspiring and innovative approach to enhance learning and teaching. Thank you for supporting the HIVE as part of our solution.
Mobile HIVE is purposeful to assure we reach out to all USQ campuses, and we do this regularly and assure both campuses are visited a minimum of once per month.
Our Physical HIVE is a real hub of activity and the Virtual HIVE provides online resources and information.
+400 USQ staff engaged in events and activities since April launch
+70 Cross-Institutional Learning Designers, presented with the mobile HIVE
14 Educators in Residence commencing July 24 to explore, engage and apply immersive and virtual approaches in their teaching and learning
USQ Student Meet Up Leaders toured the HIVE recently as we begin to launch opportunities to include students as partners.
We are learning together, in fact USQ participated in a sector-wide forum on AR/ VR and 360 degree video with 26 other universities. With a few exceptions we are all just entering into unpacking the affordances of these approaches to learning and teaching. We developed partnerships with leaders at CQU, Bond and Griffith University and have now hosted sector experts through USQ HIVE forums, webinars and the USQ Salon series. There’s no doubt that visitors to the HIVE mention feeling a bit jealous of what we have established here at USQ. We hope to keep expanding the HIVE and have proposed an exciting expansion of the USQ HIVE as a showcase centre for the new R Block Refurbishments.
Quickly outline some of the key HIVE features and then move into our showcase taster tour.
Proposed HIVE Showcases (in order)
USQ Lightboard (Teacher Presence Tips – Student story Rebecca and Steve)
360 Degree Video (USQ Flight Simulator – scaling our resources – Staff Paul Lee story)
Augmented Reality (Fossil / Bones – from Demonstrator to online 3D assets AR – USQ Story)
Virtual Reality (the USQ Virtual Campus Prototype – the case of wayfinding and orienting international students – USQ International partnering story)

We wanted to assure that the HIVE supported our academics to address authentic learning and teaching challenges, so we established the Educators in Residence program, with all 14 of our inaugural participants articulating a clear and present challenge they hope to seek solutions for, using immersive and virtual approaches.
We know from experience that using technology just for technology sake does not deliver real value or pass the test of time. @ the HIVE we are very focused on both action and impact so that we are addressing real, salient and sometime complex challenges faced by our staff and students. Some of the challenges we are aiming to address include:
Bullet list
Your Tour of the HIVE will be grounded in a real and specific challenge that we are working towards finding solutions for. Real solutions that support, USQ, our staff and our students.
Originally proposed by Garrison, Anderson and Archer as a framework for understanding the dynamic nature and interrelationship of key elements underpinning and defining the online learning experience.
Very collaborative / constructivist in its view of learning and teaching. Originally a venn diagram, showing the dynamic and interrelationship between the three types of presence.
TP - The design, facilitation and direction of cognitive and social processes for the purpose of realising personally meaningful and educationally worthwhile outcomes.
CP – The extent to which participants in any configuration of a COI are able to construct meaning through sustained communication
SP – The ability of participants in a COI to project themselves socially and emotionally as “real” people (ie their full personality) through the medium of communication being used
Armellini & Stefani (2016) amongst a number of others have called for a refinement to the COI, especially a re: articulation of the role of social presence as it emerges as more and more prominent in 21st century online learning.
Social presence becomes a major leveller for sense making and peer support.
Teaching presence very central to establishing the social presence in a community of inquiry. USQ students mentioned the need to feel that they belong and a desire to see the “real” instructor. We can do better than the blurry brown sweater …
Who has experience with the Lightboard, seen what it looks like as an end product? Remember from the tour a few tips? Mention a series of casual Lightboard 101, 102, 103 …. Introductory series. Takes a bit of practice to get used to camera, the mic, where to write and keeping the video concise and to the point. Tone, metagognition, and your “social presence” , especially the “real” you, all handy things to keep in mind.
Invite to revisit anytime for further exploration. We hope this small taster will leave you inspired to consider ways we can continue to support, showcase and expand the USQ HIVE in coming years ahead.
