Body image standards in the show jumping world place an emphasis on thin riders. Riders feel pressure to maintain a thin physique and those who do not are often looked down upon. Many riders struggle with poor self-esteem and confidence as a result of these unrealistic body image expectations. Additionally, research has shown that negative and critical messages about eating and weight from caregivers during childhood can influence women's self-perceptions and relationship with food as adults. However, having a self-compassionate mindset may help protect against internalizing these messages and developing issues like body shame.

2. What is body
image?
 Today, majority of the people are very conscious about how they
look. Body image has become an obsession.
 Society has embedded body image standards that began to have
a negative affect on people.
 An individual would rather be thin than healthy, this has lead some
people into anorexia, bulimia, depression, etc.

3. The affect of
Body Image on
Riders.
 Riders are expected to look a certain way in terms of body image.
 Thin is what they look for.
 Those who doesn’t fall in the thin category are usually looked
down at.
 Unfortunately, those who don’t look in a certain way (thin), they
will instantly assume that they aren't good riders because of their
weight.
 Many riders have self esteem issues because of the standards that
the community has put and it not only affected their confidence
but it also affected their riding.

 Caregivers negativity have a great impact on women when they
grow up.
 Caregivers’ body shame and criticism made women dissatisfied
with their looks and that lead them to criticizing themselves
harshly.
 Caregivers control over food had an effected on the women's food
choices.
 “excessive parental control and more specific verbalized caregiver
opinions about food consumption may undermine the develop-
ment of healthy approaches to relating to one’s body”(1)
 They later found out that women with self-compassion
“participants reporting a greater self- compassionate mindset in
how they treat themselves during difficult times tended to
endorse lower levels of body shame, body surveillance and less
frequent recall of restrictive/critical caregiver eating messages.”
