Q2 - How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary
texts? MAGAZINE FORMAT
As I began my coursework, which was made up of a music video, magazine
advert and digipack, I knew that I wanted them to all be clearly linked and
clear enough to attract a specific target of people. Each of the tasks involved
in my coursework had similar purposes as I needed all three of them to keep
hold of my target audience, to entertain and look similar to real life products. I
think that by the end of my production,
I had ensured that each product had fulfilled what I wanted it to and done so
in a professional manner.
The primary focus and purpose of my music video was to entertain my target
audience so that they will be interested during the course of the video. I think
that entertainment is gained through the transitions in-between footage as
well as how I have manipulated speed in a variety of the shoots. I think that
this played a large part in the entertainment of my music video as in my
opinion, the way in which I have edited the video matches with the raw
emotion and the pace of the song. My main product paired with both of the
ancillary tasks all share the same theme of the complications faced in a
relationship and beginning to overcome broken ones. My music video clearly
broadcasts this particular theme through the emotive look of each of the
characters in the video and how I present them. The two girls clearly reflect
the feelings that I wanted them to; sadness, despair and dealing with betrayal.
Any advert should have a primary intention to advertise a product as much as
possible and in the case of my product, I needed my magazine advert to show
my music video in the best possible light. Advertisement was the sole focus of
my magazine advert and I think that the way I have designed it, does a good
job in promoting the artist, song and the video. Each of the people involved in
the music video are shot from relatively close angles in order to highlight their
emotion and sadness and I made sure to keep the close ups in the magazine
advert. This did help with continuity but I also think that having such close up
featured in the magazine advert made it easier to see the emotion of each
person, which worked out well. By looking at either of the girls in any part of
the music video, it’s blatant to see that they are emotionally hurt and it’s
obvious that the boy is the centre and cause of their pain. In my magazine
advert this theme is continued as the pictures I have used for both of the girls
show their sadness whereas the photo of the boy which I have chosen is quite
neutral; he doesn’t seem to be expressing any kind of emotion at all,
highlighting his lack of respect for the two girls who he has hurt. I think that
this is also very similar to what is reflected in my digipack.

One of the uses of the digipack is to promote not just the single but the entire
album. The digipack can also act as a CD pack or something for dedicated
fans of the artist and/or to collect and keep. The main role of the digipack is
to sell the whole album not just to the target audience but to people who may
not know of who would have originally bought the album. Due to this, I
therefore had to ensure that the digipack would grab people’s attention in a
way that would appeal to people who don’t fit into what is my expected target
audience. My digipack is filled with a variety of close ups something which I
thought was very important in order to show the zoomed and exaggerated
emotion which is broadcasted in the whole music video. Made up of six
individual pages, each girl is the focus of one each and then the boy is on the
remaining four pages of the digipack. Once again, both of the girls are shown
looking woeful and deeply unhappy, reflecting the emotions which they
express in the music video and also the magazine advert. However in every
photo of the boy, he is shown almost emotionless and sometime even quite
stern and unsympathetic.
Overall, I genuinely believe that the combination of all three of my products
are incredibly effective as they all successfully link together and share a very
similar theme. When looking at all three of my products individually, you can
clearly see that they all share similar styles and layouts, successfully seeing
that they all relate to one another. I think that the soft look of each image,
lighting in footage/shots and mise-en-scene all work well together across all
three products and are successful together and individually.
