A Blackboard organization is similar to a Blackboard course and shares the same layout, tools, and features.
Like a Blackboard course, an organization allows authorized participants who have AUT Blackboard accounts to access documents and collaborate with other organization participants in a secure-access environment.
Unlike a Blackboard course, at AUT we use them slightly differently.
Courses are set up according to the structure in the Student Management System. Organisations are requested by Faculties or Schools and are set up manually by our Blackboard Support team.
Organisations include enrolments from courses that could be across schools and faculties.
Courses are mainly used for specific course delivery whereas organisations are usually set up to serve specific purposes – we will cover examples later
Courses are created for each semester each year – organisations are ongoing and require organisation leaders to inform Bb support about current student and staff enrolments. (However, this sometimes doesn’t happen!)
Organizations provide a collection of web-based tools, making it easy for group members to participate in on-line activities:
Announcements
Document sharing (papers, agendas, minutes, reports, course descriptors etc.) – The Content Management System is widely used
Blackboard Collaborate
Image, movie and audio file sharing
Planning and administration (announcements, calendar)
Communication (mailing lists, discussion boards, real-time chat and white board)
Groups (communications and document sharing between members)
On-line Surveys
Links to other on-line resources (web pages, databases)
Common tools that faculties at AUT are using are
