The portraits presented in this book are selected exclusively from works executed between the late Middle Ages and the seventeenth century. There are good reasons for limiting study to this period, for it was then that portraiture came into its own. It was this era that witnessed the revival and genuine renewal of the individualised, "au vif" depiction of privileged or highly esteemed persons, a genre largely neglected since Classical antiquity.

Question 1: The Painting of Modern Life The late nineteenth century is often cited as a critical point in the development of a “modern†art. Impressionists and Post-Impressionists turned to the contemporary world as primary subject matter, and depicted elements of that world using an innovative style. Carefully examine the following paintings: Monet, Rouen Cathedral: The Portal (In Sun) , 1894Manet, Bar at the Folies-Bergère , 1881-82Seurat, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte , c. 1884-86In 3 well-developed paragraphs, address the following questions: How is the subject of each painting representative of Impressionism or Post-Impressionism?How are the style and visual characteristics of each painting representative of Impressionism or Post-Impressionism? Be sure to discuss specific elements such as brushwork/application of paint, use of color and light, and composition, in your response.Describe the specific ways that each painting shows tension between its inherent two-dimensionality and any illusion of three-dimensionality created by the artist. Question 2:Modern and Contemporary Art may seem alien to many people— seemingly without content, message, or purpose. But it can be argued that Modern and Contemporary Art visually reflect the complex and abstract ideas that we experience every day. Although not for everyone, art of the 20th and 21st centuries is often a key part of the collection in many art museums. As you consider the wide range of modern and contemporary art types that we studied this week, think of yourself actually visiting a modern art museum. In 2 well-developed paragraphs discuss: While you are visiting, what type of Modern or Contemporary art will you most want to see and why? Be sure to name the specific style (e.g., Analytic Cubism, Pop Art, Abstract Expressionism)What type will you put last on your list of “things to look for?â€Why do you feel that way? Be sure to explain your ideas clearly and support them by discussing specific works of art that you have read about this week, talking about how they illustrate and support your ideas. Include the images of these specific works of art in your response. Respond to both questions as thoroughly as possible, making sure to use information from the readings and the lectures. All responses should be in complete sentence form, using proper spelling and grammar. ...

Also known as the New York School. The first major American avant-garde movement, Abstract Expressionism emerged in New York City in the 1940s. The artists produced abstract paintings that expressed their state of mind and that they hoped would strike emotional chords in viewers. The movement developed along two lines: gestural abstraction and chromatic abstraction. · Action painting . Also called gestural abstraction. The kind of Abstract Expressionism practiced by Jackson Pollock, in which the emphasis was on the creation process, the artist's gesture in making art. Pollock poured liquid paint in linear webs on his canvases, which he laid out on the floor, thereby physically surrounding himself in the painting during its creation. · Assemblage . An artwork constructed from already existing objects. · Chromatic abstraction . A kind of Abstract Expressionism that focused on the emotional resonance of color, as exemplified by the work of Barnett Newman and Mark Rothko. · Color field painting . A variant of Post-Painterly Abstraction in which artists sought to reduce painting to its physical essence by pouring diluted paint onto unprimed canvas, allowing these pigments to soak into the fabric, as exemplified by the work of Helen Frankenthaler and Morris Louis. · Conceptual art . An American avant-garde art movement of the 1960s that asserted that the "artfulness" of art lay in the artist's idea rather than its final expression. · Deconstruction . An analytical strategy developed in the late 20th century according to which all cultural "constructs" (art, architecture, and literature) are "texts." Any interpretation can be valid, and readings differ from time to time, place to place, and person to person. For those employing this approach, deconstruction means destabilizing established meanings and interpretations while encouraging subjectivity and individual differences. · Earthworks . An American art form that emerged in the 1960s. Often using the land itself as their material, Environmental ar ...

I am gone to send you the link of the electronic book. Queation 1 Please read Chapters 12and 13 and look carefully at the illustrations. Please note that there was a significant difference between the art of Northern Europe and Southern Europe during this time. The term Renaissance means a renewal or a rebirth--in this context of the styles and ideas of the Greek and Roman (Classical) past. While both areas continued to use Christian themes, the style, or the manner in which the images are put together and presented to the viewer, differed substantially from North to South. The North continued to be quite medieval or Gothic in styles, while the South (chiefly Italy), relied heavily on its Classical (Greek and Roman) past. During this period, you will see that the human figure, especially the nude, in an echo of the Classical past, appears again in Italy. The North will come to admire and to use the nude only with Albrecht Duerer, a major German artist of the late-fifteenth and early-sixteenth centuries. He will be the first Northern artist to participate in the developing humanist and classical interests of Italy. It is with this artist that the North enters into the "spirit" and the subject matter of the Italian form of the Renaissance. Describe the development of the Northern Renaissance images with respect to the use of very detailed, ordinary objects symbolic of religious ideas. Contrast that with the Classicism of the Italian works. Please address, briefly, the role of the artist's patron in the Italian Renaissance. Use illustrations and quotations from your text to make your points and include quotations and illustrations from web sites to enhance your discussion. Please follow the stated course guidelines for your assignment. Question 2 Read Chapters 15-17 and look carefully at the illustrations. In this section of the text, you will become acquainted with art of the Americas and Africa and the Neo-Classical, Romantic and Realist styles of late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth-century European works. The pace of stylistic change will begin to keep up with the faster pace of life. Here you will look at the remnants of the Classical world in the Neo-Classical (or new classical) examples, which are sometime pitted against the more intuitive, less doctrinaire works of the Romantic artists. Here, too, you will begin to look at the American works, drawn from European ideas and styles, but adapted for a new country and a new need for art. Sometimes the styles or labels of the categories of art will become blurred, making absolutes difficult to determine. I am sure that, by now, you will say, "But all periods are divergent; all periods have variants which make labels and categories uncertain." And, you will be correct. The momentum for change and for the existence of multiple ideas and styles within a specific place and time merely increases and the changes seem to be more drastic. The Realism of European and American works .

JUST NEED (4) REPLIES TO THE OTHER STUDENTS 2-3 Sentences Replay · · Week Four Discussion 1 Compare the work of two artists from any two different art movements covered in Chapter 21. · Describe, then compare, the contexts, concerns and main aspects of each movement and how those appear in the artworks you've selected. · Be sure to explain why you made your particular choices of movements, artists and artworks. · Evaluate the artwork you've selected according to any criteria you think are relevant (given what you have learned so far in the course). Be sure that you are making an evaluative comparison of the two artists’ work, rather than simply discussing them in turn. REPLY TO:Permenter Week 4, Discussion 1 COLLAPSE Top of Form Romanticism and Impressionism vary greatly in their style. Romanticism was in favor for a much longer period of time, roughly 1800-1890, than Impressionism (1870-1880). Romanticism was more an attitude and choice of subjects than a true style. The artists of this period looked for emotions and imagination when deciding what they wanted to create. They looked for the risqué and exotic as well as mystery. Impressionist artists had some more flexibility with the new availability of equipment that was more portable. This allowed Impressionists to work in the actual outdoors as opposed to studios. These artists used natural light, shadows and a lighter color palette to express their ideas. The pieces for this discussion were chosen due to the similar subject of the works yet stark contrast. Both pieces feature a group of people enjoying a leisurely activity, yet they are not alike at all. The way they contrast and show their specific movements is remarkably interesting. First, the Romanticism piece chosen is The Women of Algiers by Delacroix (p.485, fig. 21.2). This piece is very risqué, and the subject of the piece is quite scandalous. The women portrayed are women in a harem and it was unusual for outsiders to be allowed in, let alone document it such as this. Delacroix demonstrates this period by the subject of the piece being so exotic and mysterious. He does a great job showing unity yet variety here as well. The painting feels very dark and colors of the piece are mostly neutral and really work well together, with a kick of reddish orange here and there to brighten up the piece. The Impressionist piece Le Moulin de la Galette (p.490, fig. 21.7) by Renoir is a stark contrast to The Women of Algiers . This piece, while detailed enough for one to see the subjects and understand the context of the painting, is not focused on the clear lines and defined objects as The Women of Algiers is. Renoir uses a freer stroke and uses emphasis and subordination. The emphasis of the painting is on the small group in the front of the painting as the rest get blurrier the farther away they are. This painting is so much brighter with a lighter palette than the other clearly showing that it is from a different mov ...

Be sure to read the reading assignment in your text first! Read the following chapters from the textbook, Gardner’s Art through the Ages: The Western Perspective, Volume II : Modernism in Europe and America, 1900 to 1945 Modernism and Postmodernism in Europe and America, 1945 to 1980 Contemporary Art Worldwide By the due date assigned , respond to the assigned discussion questions and submit your responses to the appropriate Discussion Area . Start reviewing and responding to your classmates as early in the week as possible. Question 1: The Painting of Modern Life The late nineteenth century is often cited as a critical point in the development of a “modern” art. Impressionists and Post-Impressionists turned to the contemporary world as primary subject matter, and depicted elements of that world using an innovative style. Carefully examine the following paintings: Monet, Rouen Cathedral: The Portal (In Sun) , 1894, (Fig. 28-4, page 853, or Khan Academy ) (Impressionist) Manet, Bar at the Folies-Bergère , 1881-82 (Fig. 28-8, page 857, or Khan Academy ) (Pre-Impressionist/Realist) Seurat, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte , c. 1884-86 (Fig. 28-18, page 863, or Khan Academy ) (Post-Impressionist) In 3 well-developed paragraphs, address the following questions: How is the subject of each painting representative of Impressionism or Post-Impressionism? Which style is your artwork? (See above). Define that style. What are the characteristics of that style? What do the Impressionists paint? How are the style and visual characteristics of each painting representative of Impressionism or Post-Impressionism? Be sure to discuss specific elements such as brushwork/application of paint, use of color and light, and composition, in your response. Describe the specific ways that each painting shows tension between its inherent two-dimensionality and any illusion of three-dimensionality created by the artist. Do the Impressionists and Post-Impressionist care about the illusion of space in their paintings? What elements are they foregoing that artists use to depict realistic space--what about linear perspective? Light? etc. How does each artist handle the illusion of dimension in their painting? Question 2: Modern And Contemporary Art Modern and Contemporary Art may seem alien to many people— seemingly without content, message, or purpose. But it can be argued that Modern and Contemporary (Contemporary = OUR time period) Art visually reflect the complex and abstract ideas that we experience every day. Although not for everyone, art of the 20th and 21st centuries is often a key part of the collection in many art museums. As you consider the wide range of modern and contemporary art types that we studied this week, think of yourself actually visiting a modern art museum. In 2 well-developed paragraphs discuss: While you are visiting, what type of Modern or Contemporary art will you most want to see a.

DB3- Put yourself in the position of an up-and-coming artist living in early-sixteenth-century Italy. Now imagine trying to distinguish yourself from the other artists living in your town: Michelangelo, Raphael, Leonardo, or Titian. Is it any wonder that the Italian High Renaissance lasted only 30 years? — Jerry Saltz New needs need new techniques. And the modern artists have found new ways and new means of making their statements ... the modern painter cannot express this age, the airplane, the atom bomb, the radio, in the old forms of the Renaissance or of any other past culture. — Jackson Pollock (American abstract-expressionist painter, 1912–1956) Part 1 A renaissance in a culture can be described as a "rebirth" a "new beginning," or "resurgence." In art, some of the periods of art are considered a "renaissance" of new stylistic choices that inspired artists. However, the culture at large can also be affected by a renaissance as architects, writers, musicians and other creative professionals embrace change. After reflecting on the quotes above, discus with classmates: What are your impressions of a "renaissance" or a "new birth" occurring in a culture? Can you think of a renaissance that has happened in the last 20 years in art, music, technology, or education? Part 2 What are your opinions of what can cause a renaissance? Is it always a good th.
