The Stop-And-Frisk Law
New York City is one of the most popular cities in the United States. It is home to Times Square,
Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building and known to be the most culturally diverse part of the
world. New York is one of the most visited cities in the country. New York City consists of five
boroughs; Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens, and Staten Island. According to The Wall Street
Journal's website, there have been over 53 million visitors in just 2013. With it's vast popularity
comes a high crime rate. New York City is also a popular target amongst terrorism groups with a
recorded 17 terrorist related crimes. As a society, we are continuously faced with the difficulty of
surrendering our freedom to increase our safety. The Stop–and–Frisk law allowed New York City
police offers to stop and search people for the suspicion of weapons, drugs and other illegal imports.
This program that was started by the previous New York Major Bloomberg with the help of the
police chief, sparked a lot of controversy because New Yorker's believed this new law was going
against their rights protected by the 4th Amendment.

New York Colonization
The 17th–century wrapped up, and what happened next seemed to be something of fiction. Other
colonies had growth in population and expansion. But none like New York City. In 1700, the city
was home to 5,000 residents. Roughly 100 years later, the population capped at 60,000. In the article
"A Brief History of New York City" by Tim Lambert, everything that existed then and now on that
island is responsible for the simplicity of selling and trading fur and skin. Over a century, New York
tripled the population of Boston in the same amount of time. The spike in population from there on
brought a boom in culture and ambition. Immigrants of all different nations brought something from
the Old World and established it in the New World. Everyone had ... Show more content on

80 years later, an Englishman by the name of Henry Hudson sailed up the Hudson River. And by
1624 the city of "New Amsterdam" was founded on the tip of Manhattan. New Amsterdam started
out as a small, humble trading post with a maximum of 1,500 residents trading skins and fish like
most other colonies and trading posts. After some conflict between the British and Dutch, New
Amsterdam became known as New York. Several other settlements were established around the area
such as Staten Island, Brooklyn, the Queens, and the Bronx. All named after their founders (Tim
Lambert). These five settlements, later the five boroughs of New York, hosted their own unique
cultures and features at one point or another. Most of them having high percentages of Italians and
Irish in Brooklyn and the Queens, Jews and Hispanic in the Bronx and Manhattan, and African
Americans in Harlem. The large population of Jewish people brought bagels and delis. The large
population of blacks in Harlem bore an era of music and art and culture through the Harlem
Renaissance. Italians had heavy influences spread out over many neighborhoods throughout
Brooklyn and Queens with many Catholic churches. New Amsterdam was founded as a Dutch
trading post, and morphed into New York: the ethnic melting pot. And this melting pot birthed its

Wealthy industrialists in the 19th century built a network of major cultural institutions, such as the
famed Carnegie Hall and Metropolitan Museum of Art that would become internationally
established. The advent of electric lighting led to elaborate theater productions, and in the 1880s
New York City theaters on Broadway and along 42nd Street began featuring a new stage form that
became known as the Broadway musical. Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts is home to 12
influential arts organizations, including Jazz at Lincoln Center, Metropolitan Opera, New York City

The Hip-Hop : The Four Types Of Hip Hop Culture
The young men and women of Bronx, New York created the cultural phenomenon called hip hop,
because of the changes in the environment during the 1970s. Some of these changes include
population diversity, advancement in media technology, changing economy, and the citizens' ideas
of their rights. Hip–Hop is a multi–layered art form. It consists of four layers. These four layers are
DJing/Beatmaking, break dancing, graffiti, and rapping. Hip–Hop has become a worldwide
sensation. It can be found in about every city in the world. For example In countries like Berlin,
Barcelona, Paris, Havanna, Rome, and Tokyo the hip–hop culture is embraced. The race of people
who are correlated with Hip Hop culture are usually african americans and latin americans.
Although many of the people who started the phenomenon fall into those categories, there were also
caucasian members who added the momentum of Hip hop. For example Cap who many people
consider to be a graffiti artist legend. Diversity was very essential in the making of hip–hop culture.
Many people consider diversity to be very helpful in environments. "People work harder, are more
creative, and are more diligent when they work with or around a diverse group of people", says
Katherine W. Phillips, who is a professor and senior vice dean at Columbia Business School.
Companies that put a priority on innovation are worth more when minorities hold top leadership
positions. These companies are $44 million more valuable, on average. How is diversity important
to the creation of hip hop though? The Bronx was already a diverse area before hip hop. Some of
these races included african americans, west indians from anglophone islands, and spanish speaking
people from Puerto Rico, Cuba, Honduras, and Panama. After a while many white americans left the
Bronx. Now the American born minorities started fusing their culture together. The two races
connected specifically by the use of music. Rayman Mantila said " After I got to play the conga
drums I had a bunch of friends that were all interested in playing drums, the puerto rican kids in my
area....Everybody would go to the roof and play all kind of rhythms." They created beats with the
constant sounds of drums. These drum beats

Assisting The Poor To Make Bail Helps Everyone By Tina...
In her informative essay, "Assisting the Poor to Make Bail Helps Everyone", Tina Rosenberg states
the Bronx Freedom Fund is one of the four community organizations in the city that aims to directly
help the innocent people accused and wrongfully given dangerous jail time. The author recognizes
how the court system makes it almost impossible to make bail when they take your phone, the
defendant cannot pay their own bail, and you must pay in cash. These, as well as a few other
limitations make it very difficult for the defendant. The process of the court system, in fact, is not
keeping the streets any safer, "a drug dealer is more likely to make bail than a shoplifter"
(Rosenberg). Ritchin, head of the Bronx Freedom Fund, offers those who are not fortunate enough
to make bail a third option, one that is much more helpful and safe. The alternative options involve
jail time and unsafe environments for these non criminals. The overall reason for Ritchin's idea was
to keep less fortunate people in the community safe and out of the jail system. ... Show more content

One of Rosenberg's main claim is the idea that everyone knows the dangers of Rikers Island.
Although many people are aware of the dangers he ads the quote, "If I go to Rikers, I'm going to kill
myself." This quote shows how terrified most people are of his prison because of many stories they
have heard. She also claims that we know what particular judges definition of a higher risk person
is. What exactly is the limit, where is the line between high risk and low risk? Rosenberg uses lots of
quotes and solid facts to uphold her statement that helping the poor make bail is beneficial for
everyone. With the many claims I have come across in her article, they are immediately followed by

Organized Crime In The 1930's
Throughout time organized crime has had a prolific impact on the United States and the world as a
whole. Specifically in the 1930's when prohibition was in effect and even after it was repealed. Their
was one group that stood out in the midst of all the organized crime of the 1930's. That group is
called the Mafia. The Italian based criminal syndicate was one of the most powerful and influential
groups when it came to organized crime in the 1930's. Their numbers were vast and their powerful
reputation concerned the national government at the time. Though it is smaller in numbers today, the
Mafia had its time of success and power for organized crime in the 1930's. The history of the Mafia

had another partner that was on the Commission board and they had power of their own. This group
was the outfit from Chicago led by Alphonse Gabriel "Al" Capone. The Chicago outfit thrived in
during the prohibition because when it went into effect they just took the alcohol to the underground
to sell. They were constantly fighting between the North and South side gangs. The fighting hit a
climax right before the 1930's when on February 14, 1929 Al Capone sent some of his gang
members from the North side to murder rival gang members from the South side which is known as
the St. Valentine's Day Massacre. From there on out the authorities cracked down on organized
crime in Chicago. In 1932 Capone was arrested and the authority of the Chicago Mafia was passed
down to Frank "The Enforcer" Nitti. Under his authority Chicago's Mafia their crimes during the

Throgs Neck in the Movie Summer of Same Directed by Spike Lee
If you have ever heard or watched the movie Summer of Sam, an American crime movie directed by
Spike Lee in 1999 than you would know filming took place in a Bronx neighborhood called Throgs
Neck. In fact, I have recently discovered that filming took place right on my block. Located in the
Northwestern part of the Bronx, from what I have observed Throgs Neck is manly a one to two
family suburb area with the exception of some apartment buildings. Throgs Neck has many events
throughout the year, known for its parades such as the annual St. Patrick's Parade and the Veterans
Day Parade, which take place on East Tremont Avenue.

If you are driving into Throgs Neck then you will notice its main highways the Cross–Bronx
Expressway and the Throgs Neck Bridge. The Throgs Neck Bridge connects the Bronx to Queens.
The area Throgs Neck once was "Vriedelandt" later changed to Throgs Neck. For a while, people
have been arguing whether or not Throgs Neck has two GG's or one. The name Throgs Neck
originally comes from an English man named John Throckmorton who was able to stay as the Dutch
had allowed him to, in 1642. Ultimately, the American Indians drove out the Dutch. By the 19th
century, land and developers started to appear. Many landowner sold their properties to developers.
Shortly after private homes started to appear. An interesting fact about Throgs Neck is that it was
once a summer resort that would explain why as of today beach clubs are still open; many of them
have been around for over 50 years now. A historical event in the neighborhood of Throgs Neck was
in 1961 when the Throgs Neck Bridge was finally completed. "Few Throgs Neck homes, including
three rental apartment buildings and Throgs Neck Houses, one of the Bronx's first low–income city
projects, are more than seven blocks from a bay, creek inlet, or river. Because the waterfront is so
accessible, many families belong to one or more small beach and fishing clubs along Shore Drive
and Clarence Avenue" (Dolan 1984). Throgs Neck is a middle class neighborhood with the

Amazing Grace by Jonathan Kozol Essay
Jonathan Kozol's book, Amazing Grace, analyzes the lives of the people living in the dilapidated
district of South Bronx, New York. Kozol spends time touring the streets with children, talking to
parents, and discussing the appalling living conditions and safety concerns that plague the residents
in the inner cities of New York. In great detail, he describes the harsh lifestyles that the poverty
stricken families are forced into; day in and day out. Disease, hunger, crime, and drugs are of the
few everyday problems that the people in Kozol's book face; however, many of these people
continue to maintain a very religious and positive outlook on life. Jonathan Kozol's investigation on

The child tells him of the terrible conditions of the area nonchalantly and is most kind towards
Kozol. When Kozol discovers Cliffie's heroes are Michael Jackson and Oprah he inquires, "Have
you read about George Washington?" Cliffie answers, "I don't even know the man" (Kozol 8). This
quote suggests the lack of legitimate education that these children are receiving in school. The
teachers in the district are not always certified and the classroom environment is less than desirable.
Kozol visited an area where, "only 15 teachers in a faculty of 54 were certified." (Kozol 155). The
relation between most of the inner–city kids and their teachers results in a vicious cycle. The kids
can be unruly and disruptive, therefore the teacher, often times may feel hesitant to put forward
effort into his/her teaching. Due to the lack of teaching and discipline, the students may continue to
be ignorant and incompliant with authority. With the continuation of this process and the lack of an
authoritative figure at home or at school, some children may grow up and become involved in crime
related activities.
In addition to Kozol's educational related complaints, he stresses the healthcare problems that plague
the downtrodden people as well. On the book jacket, Kozol states that: "One fourth of the child–
bearing women in the neighborhoods where these children live test positive for HIV." The hospitals
in the area are also substandard,

Floods In New York City Essay
New York City has a lot of water problems originating from the rivers and the sea. Therefore they
have built several structures to prevent floods from damaging the city. Several solutions are ;
Revetments
By using revetment the coast line is protected from erosion from the sea level rise and storms.
Without revetments the coast can be badly damaged. If the coast suffers damages it could fail in its
function and the devastation of a flood will be bigger (New York City). Revetments are located in
the South Shore of Staten Island and Coney Island Creek. (Revetments) (New York City)
Offshore Breakwaters
'Offshore breakwaters are made of rock and other robust materials' (New York City). These
materials are placed in the Atlantic Ocean, close to the New York city shore. These offshore
breakwaters absorb destructive waves heading to the New York City shoreline (New York City).

Levees are embankments made of earth and/or rocks, used for flood protection.
Therefore when the sea level rises it keeps the water out of the dry land (New York City). Levees are

to see Hollywood films about prison life (e.g., Escape from Alcatraz, Murder in the First, and The

of the black nationalist Universal Zulu Nation, and "Master of the Records" got thousands of
oppressed people from all different parts of the worlds, to pump their fists to a synchronized beat,

Simpson's review emphasizes Bambaataa's ability to bring people together, to get everyone's "fists
pumping", placing "a smile ... on every face", alluding to the transcendence of racial differences
through the intersection of music movements hip–hop and rock, the merging of peoples in the
1980s. In the 1970s, hip–hop was as a voice for marginalized African American and Puerto Rican
youth. This movement was a generational revolt against the status quo, and in the midst of it
becoming global, it became commercial, about making money. Rather than valuing the music's
effects on the people, as the review of Bambaataa did, TOURE shows how the 1980s–1990s music
industry had begun to commercialize it, stripping it of its focus on the backbeat and transforming it
into something else. Rather than reflecting the voices and needs of youth at the time, it became
something unachievable – above the people, effectively diluting its political

The Bronx Zoo, And The Botanical Gardens Essay
When one thinks of the Bronx, we think Yankee Stadium, the Bronx Zoo, and the Botanical
Gardens. But ultimately, many neglect the Bronx as the poorest county, with the highest dropout
rates, and unemployment rates in the State of New York. I spent the last five years trying to fix some
of these issues, working especially with children from the ages of nine to seventeen with a nonprofit
organization called CBALL. We aim to empower young leaders and prevent children from falling
victim to the criminal culture that plagues the Bronx. A direct correlation exists between the well–
being of the residents in the Bronx and the crime rates. For example, seven out of the twenty New
York City neighborhoods with high violent crime rates come from the Bronx. As a future attorney, I
would like to attack this problem legally. For this reason, I actively swapped my ride along with Ben

Gun Hill Street Essay
The Bronx has been changing over the years as realtors and big corporations set foot in New York
City. The Bronx has always been seen as a bad borough because of history of crime rate, poverty,
and aggressiveness towards other people in the past, but it has slowly been shifting towards a
positive change. Gun Hill Road was one of the neighborhoods in the Bronx that was usually known
as a 'ghetto' area. This is because of the infamous reputation of the projects and areas around them
having higher–than–usual crime rates. Gun Hill Road/White Plains has had a rough past for a long
time, but over time it has actually been improving a lot. Not too long ago there was a shooting that
involved gang members fighting over turf, but NYTimes reports that "It is not a single clash

A Brief Note On Robert Moses, Richard Ravitch And Othmar...
Throughout the course of history there have been many advances in the world of infrastructure,
mostly occurring in the 1800's and the 1900's. Infrastructure is defined as the basic physical and
organizational structure needed for the operation of a society or enterprise, or the services and
facilities necessary for an economy to function. This definition shows how important infrastructure
is to people's lives today. It affects how people live, travel, and communicate with one another.
Three men who made huge contributions in the world of infrastructure were Robert Moses, Richard
Ravitch and Othmar Hermann Ammann. All three of these men were involved in designing
numerous landmarks, highways, bridges, tunnels, and other forms of infrastructure that today we
take for granted. Although all of these men were involved in infrastructure in the New York
metropolitan area, their contributions, personalities, and the public's opinion of them were all
different. Robert Moses was born in New Haven Connecticut. He is considered the "master builder"
of New York City, Long Island, Rockland county, and Westchester county of the mid 1900's. After
graduating from Yale and earning a Ph.D. in political science from Columbia, Robert Moses became
attracted to New York City reform politics. Moses caught the notice of Belle Moskowitz, an advisor
to Al Smith. Moses rose to power with Al Smith, who became governor of New York in 1922.

hospital was built. This new hospital was over ten times the size of the first one. Since medicine and
technology have changed in major ways over the years, the new animal hospital also has been

New York Survey Data Paper
New York Survey Data
Sampling is a method by which one can gain an estimation of accuracy for population (Jaggia &
Kelly, 2014). Surveying is a form of sampling which is often used to provide an estimate. A survey
was conducted on a group of people living in New York City which consisted of 445 randomly
selected people from multiple boroughs on a monthly basis for six months. The survey focused on
the boroughs of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, and Staten Island. Additionally,
demographic information was collected, including level of education and marital status. This paper
will provide the results of the survey as well as their accuracy of the estimates in order for the New
York City governmental agency personnel.
Statistical Calculations and Analysis
The survey data was analyzed to provide a variety of statistics, including:
The point estimate and 95% confidence interval for each borough
The 95% confidence interval to estimate a population proportion of doctoral degrees
The 95% confidence interval to estimate a population proportion of "single or other" marital status
Required sample sizes for 0.05 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the case of this survey, the New York City governmental agency personnel needs sample size for
a 0.05 margin of error. The margin of error is the difference between the sample estimate and the
population parameter (Jaggia & Kelly, 2014) and can be used as a component of risk management.
In order to gain a 0.05 margin of error, all sample sizes must be increased, however each borough
varies. The largest sample sizes are in The Bronx (2891), Staten Island (2299), and Queens (2225)
followed by the lower end of Manhattan (1739) and Brooklyn (1678). Larger sample sizes, such as
these, help maximize the opportunity of uncovering the specific mean and difference because they
more accurately reflect the population mean (Jaggia & Kelly,

America 's Drug Use Migration Essay
Across the country social shifts of the twenty first century has been the drug use migration. It goes
from centers of urban poverty to places that are suburban, white and or middle class. Over the recent
years, a third of all DEA heroin seizures took place in the state of New York. Drug abuse is rising
and becoming deadlier than ever. Staten Island has become a particular nexus of affliction. In the
1970's and 1980's, heroin was considered to be a plague in some of New York City's poorest
neighborhoods. A New York Times report indicates that the new face of heroin addiction in the state
consists mostly of middle class, working class, and upper middle class citizens. Staten Island
currently leads the city in the number of heroin related deaths, totaling seventy three in 2012, many
of which are individuals from the younger generation and in their twenties.
Heroin is named after the German word for hero, heroisch. It was first made by C. R. Alder Wright
in 1874 by adding two acetyl groups to the molecule morphine, a natural product of the opium
poppy. Heroin is an illegal, highly addictive drug. It is both the most abused and the most rapidly
acting of the opiates, about two to four times more potent than morphine and is faster in its onset of
action. It is processed from morphine which is a naturally occurring substance extracted from the
seed pod of certain varieties of poppy plants. It is typically sold as a white or brownish powder or as

Teacher Identity And Identity
Merriam Webster's Dictionary defines identity as the distinguishing character or personality of an
individual. Teacher identity implies both a cognitive psychological and sociological perspective:
people develop their identity in interaction with other people, but they express their professional

(Bejaard 2006). I come from a middle class family of six, with two parents with only a high school
diploma. My father Immigrated to America in the early 1940's from Puerto Rico, while my mom
was born in the Bronx N.Y and is African–American and Bajan decent. I was born in the Bronx in
the early seventies, and raised in Suffolk County Long island during the early eighties. I grew up in
a small community called Gordon Heights which is a predominantly African–American
Neighborhood in Coram NY. This small community was surrounded smaller towns in Suffolk
county New York mainly composed of Families of Italian, German & Jewish descent. Growing up
we spent our weekends and summers in the Bronx and Spanish Harlem, which allow my siblings

New York City, Brooklyn, Queens, And Staten Island Essay
New York City is made up of five boroughs, which include the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan,
Queens, and Staten Island. Within these boroughs, there are high and low–income neighborhoods
that contain either high or low status organizational structures or facilities. Each division has their
own characteristics and top attractions, such as the Empire State building, Central Park, or Times
Square. As New York City may be known for great food and fun attractions, New York faces
infrastructure problems within each borough. New York City's infrastructure funding is limited in
lower income neighborhoods, where money needed to upkeep the city goes toward prime tourist's
areas or residents living in high status neighborhoods, such as The Upper East Side of Manhattan,
Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, and Lenox Hill, Manhattan. Moreover, abandoned buildings, poor sewage
conditions, and rocky roads and streets are examples of low–income area infrastructure problems
that may hinder neighborhood growth both structurally and economically. Harlem, East Brooklyn,
and South Bronx are low–income parts of New York that lack new and refined facilities, roads,
plumbing, and fundamental structures, which contribute to high crime and arrests.
New York faces a various number of infrastructure issues, regardless of the neighborhood status

Compare And Contrast New York City And Carizo Springs
The state of various cities differs widely across the board. For example, comparing the scenic New
York City, to the humble town of Carrizo Springs, is like comparing a star to a campfire. Don't get
me wrong, Carrizo Springs is great place overall, but fails in comparison to New York City in most
aspects. For example, both areas have a variety of living spaces; however, the personality of the
community, the size of both cities, the cleanliness of the environments themselves, differ
considerably. There aren't many similarities for this unusual pairing, on the contrary, one could
argue that the various living arrangements offered are quite similar. For example, Carrizo shares a
relatively minute variety of living spaces in common with NYC; such as: apartments, housing, and
RV parks. Of course, the prices to rent or purchase any residence vastly differs;however, they are
still offered nonetheless. New York City offers a wider range of housing due to the size of its ever–
expanding population as opposed to Carrizo Springs' smaller one. So in turn, with this
overwhelming population, one could ponder, "How neighborly is the community itself?"

  • 7. New York Colonization The 17th–century wrapped up, and what happened next seemed to be something of fiction. Other colonies had growth in population and expansion. But none like New York City. In 1700, the city was home to 5,000 residents. Roughly 100 years later, the population capped at 60,000. In the article "A Brief History of New York City" by Tim Lambert, everything that existed then and now on that island is responsible for the simplicity of selling and trading fur and skin. Over a century, New York tripled the population of Boston in the same amount of time. The spike in population from there on brought a boom in culture and ambition. Immigrants of all different nations brought something from the Old World and established it in the New World. Everyone had ... And by 1624 the city of "New Amsterdam" was founded on the tip of Manhattan. New Amsterdam started out as a small, humble trading post with a maximum of 1,500 residents trading skins and fish like most other colonies and trading posts. After some conflict between the British and Dutch, New Amsterdam became known as New York. Several other settlements were established around the area such as Staten Island, Brooklyn, the Queens, and the Bronx. All named after their founders (Tim Lambert). These five settlements, later the five boroughs of New York, hosted their own unique cultures and features at one point or another. Most of them having high percentages of Italians and Irish in Brooklyn and the Queens, Jews and Hispanic in the Bronx and Manhattan, and African Americans in Harlem. The large population of Jewish people brought bagels and delis. The large population of blacks in Harlem bore an era of music and art and culture through the Harlem Renaissance. Italians had heavy influences spread out over many neighborhoods throughout Brooklyn and Queens with many Catholic churches. • 15. The Hip-Hop : The Four Types Of Hip Hop Culture The young men and women of Bronx, New York created the cultural phenomenon called hip hop, because of the changes in the environment during the 1970s. Some of these changes include population diversity, advancement in media technology, changing economy, and the citizens' ideas of their rights. Hip–Hop is a multi–layered art form. It consists of four layers. These four layers are DJing/Beatmaking, break dancing, graffiti, and rapping. Hip–Hop has become a worldwide sensation. It can be found in about every city in the world. For example In countries like Berlin, Barcelona, Paris, Havanna, Rome, and Tokyo the hip–hop culture is embraced. The race of people who are correlated with Hip Hop culture are usually african americans and latin americans. Although many of the people who started the phenomenon fall into those categories, there were also caucasian members who added the momentum of Hip hop. For example Cap who many people consider to be a graffiti artist legend. Diversity was very essential in the making of hip–hop culture. Many people consider diversity to be very helpful in environments. "People work harder, are more creative, and are more diligent when they work with or around a diverse group of people", says Katherine W. Phillips, who is a professor and senior vice dean at Columbia Business School. Companies that put a priority on innovation are worth more when minorities hold top leadership positions. These companies are $44 million more valuable, on average. How is diversity important to the creation of hip hop though? The Bronx was already a diverse area before hip hop. Some of these races included african americans, west indians from anglophone islands, and spanish speaking people from Puerto Rico, Cuba, Honduras, and Panama. After a while many white americans left the Bronx. Now the American born minorities started fusing their culture together. The two races connected specifically by the use of music. Rayman Mantila said " After I got to play the conga drums I had a bunch of friends that were all interested in playing drums, the puerto rican kids in my area....Everybody would go to the roof and play all kind of rhythms." They created beats with the constant sounds of drums. These drum beats ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Assisting The Poor To Make Bail Helps Everyone By Tina... In her informative essay, "Assisting the Poor to Make Bail Helps Everyone", Tina Rosenberg states the Bronx Freedom Fund is one of the four community organizations in the city that aims to directly help the innocent people accused and wrongfully given dangerous jail time. The author recognizes how the court system makes it almost impossible to make bail when they take your phone, the defendant cannot pay their own bail, and you must pay in cash. These, as well as a few other limitations make it very difficult for the defendant. The process of the court system, in fact, is not keeping the streets any safer, "a drug dealer is more likely to make bail than a shoplifter" (Rosenberg). Ritchin, head of the Bronx Freedom Fund, offers those who are not fortunate enough to make bail a third option, one that is much more helpful and safe. The alternative options involve jail time and unsafe environments for these non criminals. The overall reason for Ritchin's idea was to keep less fortunate people in the community safe and out of the jail system. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of Rosenberg's main claim is the idea that everyone knows the dangers of Rikers Island. Although many people are aware of the dangers he ads the quote, "If I go to Rikers, I'm going to kill myself." This quote shows how terrified most people are of his prison because of many stories they have heard. She also claims that we know what particular judges definition of a higher risk person is. What exactly is the limit, where is the line between high risk and low risk? Rosenberg uses lots of quotes and solid facts to uphold her statement that helping the poor make bail is beneficial for everyone. With the many claims I have come across in her article, they are immediately followed by good solid ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Specifically in the 1930's when prohibition was in effect and even after it was repealed. Their was one group that stood out in the midst of all the organized crime of the 1930's. That group is called the Mafia. The Italian based criminal syndicate was one of the most powerful and influential groups when it came to organized crime in the 1930's. Their numbers were vast and their powerful reputation concerned the national government at the time. Throgs Neck in the Movie Summer of Same Directed by Spike Lee If you have ever heard or watched the movie Summer of Sam, an American crime movie directed by Spike Lee in 1999 than you would know filming took place in a Bronx neighborhood called Throgs Neck. In fact, I have recently discovered that filming took place right on my block. Located in the Northwestern part of the Bronx, from what I have observed Throgs Neck is manly a one to two family suburb area with the exception of some apartment buildings. Throgs Neck has many events throughout the year, known for its parades such as the annual St. Patrick's Parade and the Veterans Day Parade, which take place on East Tremont Avenue. The name Throgs Neck originally comes from an English man named John Throckmorton who was able to stay as the Dutch had allowed him to, in 1642. Ultimately, the American Indians drove out the Dutch. By the 19th century, land and developers started to appear. Many landowner sold their properties to developers. Shortly after private homes started to appear. An interesting fact about Throgs Neck is that it was once a summer resort that would explain why as of today beach clubs are still open; many of them have been around for over 50 years now. A historical event in the neighborhood of Throgs Neck was in 1961 when the Throgs Neck Bridge was finally completed. "Few Throgs Neck homes, including three rental apartment buildings and Throgs Neck Houses, one of the Bronx's first low–income city projects, are more than seven blocks from a bay, creek inlet, or river. Kozol spends time touring the streets with children, talking to parents, and discussing the appalling living conditions and safety concerns that plague the residents in the inner cities of New York. In great detail, he describes the harsh lifestyles that the poverty stricken families are forced into; day in and day out. Disease, hunger, crime, and drugs are of the few everyday problems that the people in Kozol's book face; however, many of these people continue to maintain a very religious and positive outlook on life. When Kozol discovers Cliffie's heroes are Michael Jackson and Oprah he inquires, "Have you read about George Washington?" Cliffie answers, "I don't even know the man" (Kozol 8). This quote suggests the lack of legitimate education that these children are receiving in school. The teachers in the district are not always certified and the classroom environment is less than desirable. Kozol visited an area where, "only 15 teachers in a faculty of 54 were certified." (Kozol 155). The relation between most of the inner–city kids and their teachers results in a vicious cycle. The kids can be unruly and disruptive, therefore the teacher, often times may feel hesitant to put forward effort into his/her teaching. Due to the lack of teaching and discipline, the students may continue to be ignorant and incompliant with authority. With the continuation of this process and the lack of an authoritative figure at home or at school, some children may grow up and become involved in crime related activities. In addition to Kozol's educational related complaints, he stresses the healthcare problems that plague the downtrodden people as well. On the book jacket, Kozol states that: "One fourth of the child– bearing women in the neighborhoods where these children live test positive for HIV." • 53. A Brief Note On Robert Moses, Richard Ravitch And Othmar... Throughout the course of history there have been many advances in the world of infrastructure, mostly occurring in the 1800's and the 1900's. Infrastructure is defined as the basic physical and organizational structure needed for the operation of a society or enterprise, or the services and facilities necessary for an economy to function. This definition shows how important infrastructure is to people's lives today. It affects how people live, travel, and communicate with one another. Three men who made huge contributions in the world of infrastructure were Robert Moses, Richard Ravitch and Othmar Hermann Ammann. All three of these men were involved in designing numerous landmarks, highways, bridges, tunnels, and other forms of infrastructure that today we take for granted. Although all of these men were involved in infrastructure in the New York metropolitan area, their contributions, personalities, and the public's opinion of them were all different. Robert Moses was born in New Haven Connecticut. He is considered the "master builder" of New York City, Long Island, Rockland county, and Westchester county of the mid 1900's. After graduating from Yale and earning a Ph.D. in political science from Columbia, Robert Moses became attracted to New York City reform politics. At the time Calogero was angry but knew something was going to happen if he had stayed in that car. Sonny had saved his life. Calogero was horrified he had lost his friends but happy that he could live another day. Every day after that night Calogero used his talent and did great things for being a boy from the Bronx. A Bronx Tale is one of the best movies I have ever seen with one of greatest messages that everyone should remember. It is true that, "The saddest thing in life is wasted talent." It is proven all over the world through terrorist, criminals and so many other people throughout the world. What will you do with what you have? Find what you are good at and remember that you could have all the talent in the world but if you don't do good with it you will have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 64. America 's Drug Use Migration Essay Across the country social shifts of the twenty first century has been the drug use migration. It goes from centers of urban poverty to places that are suburban, white and or middle class. Over the recent years, a third of all DEA heroin seizures took place in the state of New York. Drug abuse is rising and becoming deadlier than ever. Staten Island has become a particular nexus of affliction. In the 1970's and 1980's, heroin was considered to be a plague in some of New York City's poorest neighborhoods. A New York Times report indicates that the new face of heroin addiction in the state consists mostly of middle class, working class, and upper middle class citizens. Staten Island currently leads the city in the number of heroin related deaths, totaling seventy three in 2012, many of which are individuals from the younger generation and in their twenties. Heroin is named after the German word for hero, heroisch. It was first made by C. R. Alder Wright in 1874 by adding two acetyl groups to the molecule morphine, a natural product of the opium poppy. Heroin is an illegal, highly addictive drug. It is both the most abused and the most rapidly acting of the opiates, about two to four times more potent than morphine and is faster in its onset of action. It is processed from morphine which is a naturally occurring substance extracted from the seed pod of certain varieties of poppy plants. It is typically sold as a white or brownish powder or as the black sticky ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Ellis Island Research Paper Ellis Island was the stopping grounds from 1892 to 1954, for over twelve million immigrants, who entered the United States as a way to conquer new opportunities and live a better life that mirrors the American Dream . Ellis Island is a small island that sits in the S hadow of The Statue of Liberty right off the tip of Manhattan by the coast of New Jersey within the New York Harbor. It was the major harbor for immigrant's entry, all who came, arrived by steamboats and had one to two weeks of travel. On the steamboat the passengers were divided according to wealth and class. The staterooms and cabins were designed for the first and second class passengers and the large open space at the bottom of the boat was called "steerage" this area was assigned ... Approximately 4,000 African American New Yorkers fought for the Union only because congress passed two Acts allowing the enlistment of African American. • 68. Teacher Identity And Identity Merriam Webster's Dictionary defines identity as the distinguishing character or personality of an individual. Teacher identity implies both a cognitive psychological and sociological perspective: people develop their identity in interaction with other people, but they express their professional identity in perceptions of who they are and who they want to become as a result of this interaction." (Bejaard 2006). I come from a middle class family of six, with two parents with only a high school diploma. My father Immigrated to America in the early 1940's from Puerto Rico, while my mom was born in the Bronx N.Y and is African–American and Bajan decent. I was born in the Bronx in the early seventies, and raised in Suffolk County Long island during the early eighties. I grew up in a small community called Gordon Heights which is a predominantly African–American Neighborhood in Coram NY. This small community was surrounded smaller towns in Suffolk county New York mainly composed of Families of Italian, German & Jewish descent. Growing up we spent our weekends and summers in the Bronx and Spanish Harlem, which allow my siblings and I to stay in touch with our Afro Latino roots. Attending school on long Island in comparison to NY city schools, was a blessing of sorts because the quality of education was better. This is where I learned to develop relationships with people of all races, even though we were in the minority. Keeping in touch with our communities in Bronx & Harlem, during my senior year in High School was able to join a program called The International Youth Leadership Institute, sponsored by Teachers College and Columbia University. Through this program, in which I was fortunate to be a part of, is where opportunity to travel outside the United States to Senegal, West Africa. This experience changed my life forever in which I now see the world through a different lens. At an early age in life, the elders of the family always taught us about the African history and what it means to be of the African Diaspora. I had a firsthand experience of visiting slave holding cells and seeing the door of no return In Goree Island, Senegal. Through this trip I was able to understand the effects of ... • 70. New York City, Brooklyn, Queens, And Staten Island Essay New York City is made up of five boroughs, which include the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island. Within these boroughs, there are high and low–income neighborhoods that contain either high or low status organizational structures or facilities. Each division has their own characteristics and top attractions, such as the Empire State building, Central Park, or Times Square. As New York City may be known for great food and fun attractions, New York faces infrastructure problems within each borough. New York City's infrastructure funding is limited in lower income neighborhoods, where money needed to upkeep the city goes toward prime tourist's areas or residents living in high status neighborhoods, such as The Upper East Side of Manhattan, Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, and Lenox Hill, Manhattan. Moreover, abandoned buildings, poor sewage conditions, and rocky roads and streets are examples of low–income area infrastructure problems that may hinder neighborhood growth both structurally and economically. Harlem, East Brooklyn, and South Bronx are low–income parts of New York that lack new and refined facilities, roads, plumbing, and fundamental structures, which contribute to high crime and arrests. New York faces a various number of infrastructure issues, regardless of the neighborhood status quo. Many city roads, subways, bridges, water mains, sewer systems, school buildings, and other public buildings are over 50 years old. More than 200 of New York City's public ... • 72. Compare And Contrast New York City And Carizo Springs The state of various cities differs widely across the board. For example, comparing the scenic New York City, to the humble town of Carrizo Springs, is like comparing a star to a campfire. Don't get me wrong, Carrizo Springs is great place overall, but fails in comparison to New York City in most aspects. For example, both areas have a variety of living spaces; however, the personality of the community, the size of both cities, the cleanliness of the environments themselves, differ considerably. There aren't many similarities for this unusual pairing, on the contrary, one could argue that the various living arrangements offered are quite similar. For example, Carrizo shares a relatively minute variety of living spaces in common with NYC; such as: apartments, housing, and RV parks. Of course, the prices to rent or purchase any residence vastly differs;however, they are still offered nonetheless. New York City offers a wider range of housing due to the size of its ever– expanding population as opposed to Carrizo Springs' smaller one. So in turn, with this overwhelming population, one could ponder, "How neighborly is the community itself?" As for differences, in terms of the community as a whole, Carrizo Springs has the Big ... These islands include: The Bronx, Staten Island, Manhattan, and Queens. Carrizo on the other hand, only has one "add–on" of sorts in the form of the neighboring Carrizo Hill. Carrizo Hill hardly adds to the overall size of Carrizo Springs due to it being rather compact itself. However with such a small area covered, have you ever wondered how clean their environments ... • 78. The Bronx Zoo, And The Botanical Gardens When one thinks of the Bronx, we think of Yankee Stadium, the Bronx Zoo, and the Botanical Gardens. But ultimately, many neglect the Bronx as the poorest county, with the highest dropout rates, and unemployment rates in the State of New York. I spent the last five years trying to fix some of these issues, working especially with children from the ages of nine to seventeen with a nonprofit organization called CBALL. We aim to empower young leaders and prevent children from falling victim to the criminal culture that plague the Bronx. A direct correlation exists between the well– being of the residents in the Bronx and the crime rates. For example, seven out of the twenty New York City neighborhoods with high violent crime rates come from the Bronx. As a future attorney, I would like to attack this problem legally. Therefore, I actively swapped my ride along with Ben Cruz to intern with the Bronx Defenders. Do to their stellar reputation; I was eager to see the Bronx Defender 's approach towards helping the borough. Also, my experience of that day impressed me and inspired me to one day potentially work for the Bronx Defenders. The Bronx Defenders impressed me with their holistic approach and resembled the work I do with nonprofits. While at the Bronx Defenders office, I got a firsthand look at their overarching approach to criminal defense and their tremendous dedication to their clients. I shadowed Robyn Mar, a criminal defense attorney for the organization who represents ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
