Title of the project: Evaluation and identification of chickpea resistance for the main fungal diseases in Tunisia
Background
Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) is widely grown around the world and occupies the third position among food
legumes in terms of cultivated areas (11.97 millon ha; FAOSTATAgriculture,
2010). Chickpea is considered a vital source of protein for food and feed in many countries, and allow the
sustainability of cereal–legume cropping systems. Among the major biotic constraints in realization of full yield
potential of chickpea in Tunisia, ascochyta blight
(AB) caused by Ascochyta rabiei (Pass.) Labr. and fusarium wilt (FW) caused by the ... Show more content on

ciceris (0, 1A, 1B/C, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6) (Jiménez–Diaz et al., 1993). In addition, disease resistance for AB is
considered to be a quantitative trait and numerous QTLs have been identified on the chickpea genetic map
(Millán et al., 2010). While in the case of
FW, resistance for race 0 is governed by two genes, Foc–01/foc–01 et Foc–02/foc–02, conferring, each one
separately a total resistance to FW (Halila et al., 2009). Breeders are attempting to combine genes in a new
cultivar to improve the level and durability of resistance, but this process is further complicated when different
QTLs or genes control the same phenotype. Marker–assisted breeding (MAB) for AB and FW resistance would
facilitate the development of new chickpea cultivars. Various AB resistance quantitative trait loci
(QTLs) have been reported in the literature (Collard et al., 2003; Udupa and Baum, 2003;
Iruela et al., 2006; Tar'an et al., 2007). Two quantitative trait loci (QTLAR1 and QTLAR2) associated with
resistance to AB have been successfully targeted using allele specific markers.
A codominant SCAR marker (SCY17590) tightly linked to QTLAR2 has been reported (Iruela et al., 2006) and
was successfully employed to characterize blight resistance sources in chickpea
(Imtiaz et al., 2008). A new co–dominant molecular marker (CaETR) was developed by
Madrid et al. (2012) based on allelic sequence length polymorphism in an ethylene receptorlike gene located in
the genomic region of QTLAR1, which confers AB

Vegetarianism In Central And South America
Vegetarianism is not a modern phenomenon. Indeed, as a lifestyle vegetarianism began with the Greek aesthetes
and was subsequently adopted by many Romans who thought a frugal lifestyle to be beneficial to themselves and
to the state.
However, through much of human history people have relied on a mainly vegetarian diet to survive. The great
civilizations of central and south America also had a predominantly vegetarian diet. This actually isn't as easy as it
sounds, as the human body needs to source a number of proteins from the diet. Now, one way to ensure that these
proteins are gained in adequate quantities is to combine grains and beans.
This is why almost all cultures have their mix of the 'grain and bean' staple either as part of their current cuisines
or as parts of their historical cuisines. In Africa, historically this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The interesting thing about this diet was the inclusion of chillies. Chillies both act to spice and flavour the food.
However, the fresh chilli fruit are also a good source of vitamin C which is critical in a vegetarian diet as it aids in
the uptake of non–haeme (ie non–blood) iron into the body. This may well explain why chillies spread worldwide
so quickly and why they remain very important in countries and regions where meat remains, or historically was,
a very small portion of the diet (Asia, the Caribbean, Africa and India).
However, you don't have to have a subsistence diet to be a vegetarian, far from it. But the rules of the subsistence
diet remains in terms of eating a healthy vegetarian diet. Mix grains and beans or mushrooms to ensure you get all
the necessary dietary proteins. Add nuts for proteins and essential oils and ensure you have plenty of vitamin C in
the diet. Beyond these basic rules what you eat is very much limited only by your own imagination and the
number of ingredients you have to hand.
Here, however, are some classic vegetarian dishes to get your

Hummus Research Paper
Many people regard hummus as the most representative Middle Eastern food. But I have never eaten hummus
since I left the Middle East last year. There are several reasons for not having it either in China or in America. It is
hard to find hummus in China. People in my area barely know what hummus is, or even chickpeas. After I came
back to the US from China, I was able to purchase the hummus in plastic containers in grocery stores, but I didn't
buy any. When I saw the hummus here in the US, I lost my desire to buy and eat because it is hard for me to relate
the fresh made hummus to the ones here sitting in the fridge.
So I decided to make my own hummus. I found a recipe online and bought most of the ingredients from local
grocery store and Tahini from Black Cherry Mediterranean Market. Putting 3 cans of chickpeas, lemons juice of 2
lemons, a spoon of Tahini, a teaspoon of salt, 2 cloves of garlic, and 2 teaspoons of chickpeas liquid into a mixer.
I like a little crunchy hummus better, so I didn't mix it for a long time. I sprinkled some fried pine nuts and added
some olive oil before serving. It tastes much better than the ones I could purchase ... Show more content on

But when I tried the authentic hummus in the Middle East, I felt those that existed in the US shouldn't represent
real hummus. Just as orange chicken should not be a representative Chinese food. They taste good, but it is hard
to be accepted as an important part of the cultures. Whenever I think of hummus after the experience in Middle
East, I think of the little plate of hummus with olive oil and different kinds of spices on top, or the little white
container of hummus with different colors of toppings you can choose when you ordered to go. Industrialized
mass production of hummus here is no more considered as a good middle eastern food in my mind. It is
something easy and cheap to get in those local restaurants or sandwich shops, with a not simple of

I Love Peanut Butter Essay
Who doesn't love a generous spoonful of peanut butter?
We all get a delightful satisfaction in scooping out a glob of creamy peanut butter.
Sometimes it's to spread on other food items. Bananas and whole wheat bread are my favorites.
Other times, it's for your favorite dessert recipe, like 5–Ingredient Peanut Butter Cookies.
The most memorable moments are those when you scrape it from the jar and eat it plain. Nutty goodness rushes to
your taste buds. A satisfying earthy flavor takes over. The peanut butter sticks to the roof of your mouth and the

The second and third were complete failures. The rice, quinoa and chickpeas burned to the bottom of my pressure
cooker. Twice.
The fourth trial was an overcorrection. Too much water. Yet since this trial was edible, I could taste I was on the
right path. It had the nutty aftertaste I was looking for.
The winning trial was trial five. Creamy yet slightly chunky and salty, nutty and sweet.
My husband declared it wasn't peanut butter.
He was right; it wasn't peanut butter. However, it was healthy, low fat, nutty and addictive to eat.
I completed a sixth trial. That trial confirmed the previous version was the best.
I'm sure you're ready for the recipe.
Here it is! Recipe
This nut butter alternative recipe is your new best friend. You can enjoy spoonful after spoonful of this slightly
sweet and somewhat nutty spread without feeling guilty.

Falafel Essay
5 Reasons Why Falafel is a Good Vegetarian Alternative
What is falafel?
Falafel is one of the most popular recipes of the Middle East. Falafel is mainly made from chickpeas and can be
given a form of kibble, small hamburger or ball which is fried with olive oil. Falafel is very tasty and easy to
make and usually served as a starter or as a snack in warm pita bread. The original falafel recipe is based on
chickpeas but in countries like Egypt, it is made chiefly with beans, so the bean falafel is another tasty option and
its preparation is similar. Falafel is a good vegetarian alternative, and served as such or in the pitta breads,
accompanied by vegetables and yogurt sauce.

Environmental sustainability:
You can feed 10 times more people with the food which is not based on animal meat. Each year of forests and
forest disappear so they can graze animals. In addition, the intensive farming generates waste (manure) and highly
polluting methane.
Prevent animal suffering:
Behind this way of eating there is a whole philosophy of life. The planet is understood as the home of living
beings. Avoid, if possible, animal suffering is very important. You can feed yourself without killing them and
consume food which doesn't require killing an animal (milk, egg, honey, etc.).

Michael Neto
In my opinion, Neto's artwork wants to appeal to both the mind and the body, so in a way he is combining
Dadaism and Minimalism. His work resembles Dadaism in that it uses readymades such as dry leaves and spices,
he even says, "'I work with whatever I can find. If I can't find one spice, or it's too expensive, I'll use another. No
problem,' Neto says.'" So, even though he cannot obtain the object he wanted he just uses another one because the
idea is not in the object itself, but in his mind. Neto conveys Marcel Duchamp's manifesto where he states that it
does not matter whether he made the work, what matters is that he chose it and gave it a new meaning. Here, Neto

Chickpea Lab Report
The goal of this experiment was successfully accepted because the results showed a difference in moisture content
between each of the three differently concentrated solutions. As shown in Figure 1, the more dilute the NaCl
solution is, the more water absorption that takes place. The same trend can be noted within the normalized data, in
which the more concentrated the NaCl solution is, the less water absorption that takes place. This pattern relates
to the osmosis that the chickpea is encountering. Since NaCl is a larger molecule compared to water, the
chickpeas will take in less NaCl molecules to occupy the same amount of space. Figure 2 is a graph of the
normalized M (t) data, which shows an exponential increase in the moisture in the beginning ... Show more

Since, other factors could affect the rate of absorption of the chickpeas, one of these factors could be the size of
the chickpea. The smaller the chickpea, the less mass there is for water to consume and the larger the chickpea,
the more mass there is for water to consume. Another factor that can determine the size of the chickpea are the
type. Since there are several different types of beans, each bean has a different semipermeable membrane. This
means that different amounts of water can be absorbed by different types of beans, depending on the size of the
pores located on the beans surface. Chickpeas were said to have increased two to three times their size, whereas
other beans are known to only increase their size by two times.8 A third factor that could affect the amount of
moisture absorbed would be the temperature. As shown in other journal articles, the hotter the solution
temperature the faster and greater the chickpea absorption. Finally, another extension of this experiment would be
to determine the rate constants of the Peleg equation using different types of legumes. Different types of legumes
absorb water differently due to the semi–permeable membrane, therefore the rate constants would be

There is something really appealing about black–colored foods, perhaps, because they are not something we get
our mouth's around everyday. Of course there is chocolate, espresso, black beans and Beluga lentils, but even less
common are squid ink pasta, charcoal bread, black garlic and black quinoa. Rarer still are black chickpeas or ceci

These foods from the dark side are filled with more antioxidants than light–colored foods because of their high
pigment content. In fact, purple, blue, red and black whole foods are packed with anthocyanins, a powerful
phytonutrient that may help reduce the risk of diabetes, heart disease and certain types of cancer. Benefits

The Effects Of Heat Stress On The Food And Nutritional...
Introduction According to the IPCC reports, an increase of 2–4°C in temperature is predicted globally by the end
of the 21st century (IPCC 2007). It is also estimated that tropical and subtropical parts of the world will be the
most affected areas by this rise in temperature (Battisti and Naylor 2009; Lobell and Gourdji, 2012). Moreover,
due to rise in temperature, a noticeable change in plant phenology and yield was observed across different crop
species and also within crop species (Ibanez et al., 2010). Thus, it is an urgent issue to be addressed with regard to
heat stress to ensure the food and nutritional security. The rise in temperature beyond a threshold level for a
period of time causing irreversible damage to plant growth and development is called heat stress. In general, a
transient elevation in temperature, usually 10–15 ◦C above ambient, is considered heat shock or heat stress. The
exposure to high temperature or heat stress affects the growth, development and physiological mechanism of the
crop. Transitory or constantly high temperatures cause an array of morpho–anatomical (seed germination, fruit
maturation etc.) physiological (photosynthesis, respiration, membrane stability etc.) and biochemical changes
movement, transport of materials and hormones and primary and secondary metabolites) in most crops, which
affect the crop growth and development. (Chen et al., 1982) Consequently, this may lead to a drastic reduction in
cost–production ratio of the yield.

Analysis: Lemon Cheesecake Cannoli And Chicken Salsa
This week in lab, we completed the Iron Chef challenge. For this challenge, we had to create two dishes using the
secret ingredient–flour tortillas–and ingredients from a list as well as proteins. Our curveball was that we had to
use a food processor for one of our dishes. My group I made a Lemon Cheesecake Cannoli and a Chicken Salsa.
The cannoli filling consisted of cream cheese, lemon pudding, lemon juice, and vanilla extract; the shell was
made from a flour tortilla. It was topped off with granola and powdered sugar. Some of the salsa ingredients were
chicken, turkey bacon, chipotle chilies in adobo sauce, chickpeas, tomatoes, onion, garlic, lime juice, and cheese.
It was served with homemade tortilla chips. For the first two days in the lab, Autumn and I focused on making the
cannoli while Tailhya and Emily focused on making the salsa. Prepping all the ingredients took about 15 minutes.
To the make the cannoli, we first mixed up the ingredients for the filling in the food processor. This took about 20
minutes because the cream cheese made the filling very thick, so we had to keep adding some amounts of lemon
juice to soften it up. Frying the cannoli shells only took about 5 minutes because the oil was very hot, so they

Personal Narrative Analysis
It was a late night, my family was finishing dinner while I was watching tv. My older sister Kristen ate a chickpea
not knowing that she was allergic. Her lip started to swell and my family began to panic. That night we went to
the hospital where we found out about her allergies. She is severely allergic to all nuts, shellfish and legumes,
which are beans and peas. Throughout the years when we went to restaurants, my family and I ordered desserts,
Kristen had to wait because the desserts contained nuts or were processed in a facility that has nuts. She was not
happy because she had to watch us all eat stuff that looked and tasted good. To make her happy, I would go home
and make a dessert for her to enjoy. I also became interested in watching

Food And Aesthetics Of Developing A Dish
This qualitative study explains my understanding of food and aesthetics about developing a dish. This study is
based on series of my experiences, learning and understanding of food as a subject, in order to understand the
detail to conceive and develop a dish, keeping in mind a preliminary view of the final plating, flavour and user
consumption. Further in this study I will be going into detail of how I conceptualized the dish and what factors
were considered for creation of this dish.
The cognitive significance of food is an effort of reference, representation, expression, exemplification, and the
social conditions of its preparation and serving. (Korsmeyer, 1999, p. 136) Cooking has always been a huge part
of my upbringing. I come from a society that believes in cooking meals at home, no matter what our schedules
are. In India its called "Ghar Ka Khana" meaning "home made food". Unlike most patriarchal societies, cooking
in Kashmir is not only done by women, it's a family affair and everyone in the family contributes and eats
together as it is believed to enhance the experience of consumable pleasure, food. Lindsey Shere concurs, food
should be enjoyable, and bring people together somehow. If people ate together everyday, things would be
different. And if people ate and cooked together, things would be very different. (Dornenburg & Page, 1996, p.
396)
I have decided to create a dish is a conceptual interaction between the affinity trail and the bridging trail that

Food Fuel Lab Report : Food Burning Lab
Sam Caplan
Food Burning Lab Report
Introduction:
In the first experiment of the year, the food burning lab, the class explored how much energy is contained in
different types of food. In order to understand the experiment, one must understand what energy is and the
different types of energy that were explored in the experiment. Energy is the ability to get work done. There are
many different types of energy that can help accomplish this. These include heat energy, kinetic energy, light
energy, sound energy, and electric energy. In addition, there is another type of energy called potential, or stored
energy.
Potential energy, which is the focus of the food burning experiment, is the energy that is stored in every object.
There are three different types of potential energy: gravitational, elastic, and chemical. Potential energy can be
transferred into the other types of energy, the reason why it's called potential. An important fact to know about
energy is that it can never be destroyed, only recycled and re–used. With chemical potential energy, a conversion
to a different type of energy requires a chemical reaction. This means that in order to release the potential energy,
a reaction is required to create or break chemical bonds. In the class' experiment, the class took different types of
food and attempted to find out out how much potential energy is stored in their bonds.
The class came up with a plan for the lab. The group decided to measure the amount of the amount of

The Movie ' Ava Kept Yelling ' Essay
Throughout the game, Ava kept yelling "LUCA, STOP!" and would become very frustrated when Luca would try
to hide with her or cheat. She was very annoyed by everything he did, and thought he was very immature. At 9
years old, she didn't quite understand that 6 year olds aren't always willfully disobedient, just not necessarily as
cognitively advanced or as capable of communicating all of their emotions. She judged Luca according to her
standards of behavior for her peers, rather than as a rising first grader. Later, she asks me if she was ever that
annoying, and when I tell her that yes, she was, she seems shocked. A couple of turns later, Chloe had still not had
to be the seeker. Ava began to pout and say that they had to take turns, and it was Chloe's turn now. Chloe
resisted, saying that she hadn't been tagged yet. Ava only insisted a couple more times and then gave in,
demonstrating an ability to put herself in Chloe's shoes. I was surprised that she didn't make a bigger deal of it,
because the other 9 year olds I have known would have been very upset if they didn't get their way or they
thought they were being treated unfairly. Discussion of Observation 1 Throughout the observation period, I
noticed that although Ava wasn't the oldest, she spoke the most frequently. The other children generally let her
take the lead because she spoke the most loudly and with the shrillest voice. During a brief conflict with Chloe
when Ava wanted everyone to take turns being the

Pros And Cons Of Vegetarian
Vegetarian's sex is dreary. In recent times, more Americans are turning vegetarian. Roughly around "7.3 billion
people" and have been eating less of animal meat and more greens. Well you might say that's awesome, right?!,
well unfortunately in some cases vegetarians eat so much greens that it has lowered their sex drive. This is caused
by an unbalanced Zinc level the human body needs. If vegetarians don't replace the loss of Zinc in their diet it
triggers complications in their sex life.
Vegetarians decide to changeover for varies of reasons, eating meat can cause a variety of health problems,
obesity, and weight gained. "PETA noted that meat makes people "fat, sick, and boring in bed,". Another
alternative reason why people convert is because the love they have for animals. The organization named "PETA"
has been around for "25 years" one of the organization goal is to "expose what really went on behind the very
thick, soundproof walls of animal laboratories" this organization really tries to push and persuade people to
convert into "cruelty–free" eating. Although there's still a lot of carnivore's, numbers have been rising 40.5% of
the United States population are eating non–meat foods. "The factory farming industry strives to maximize output
while minimizing costs–always at the animals' expense.", I discovered a relationship between how farm owners
raise their animals to be mass produced for the money, in relation to how well–known company's use tactics

Cauisine Under The Mauryans
Cuisine – Around 300 BC, under the Mauryans, a lot of Hindus felt that animal sacrifices added to your karma
and kept you from getting free of the wheel of reincarnation. Animal sacrifices became less popular, and although
people didn't give up eating meat entirely, they ate much less of it. A lot of people became vegetarians. Maurya
food expanded fruit choices for these new vegetarians by reproducing two different kinds of citrus fruit together
to get oranges. In the Gupta period, Hindus began to worship a Mother Goddess. Cows were sacred to her, and so
Hindus stopped eating beef pretty much completely. About the same time, Indian scientists invented a way to

Population Genetics Of Chickpea And Its Wild Progenitors C
Population genetics of chickpea and its wild progenitors C. reticulatum and C. echinospermum Susan Moenga
Introduction Chickpea, Cicer arietinum, is the second most widely grown legume in the world, cultivated on
~11.5 million ha mostly in India and Ethiopia (FAOSTAT, 2013). Genetic and molecular evidence have
demonstrated that C. reticulatum is the progenitor of the cultivated pulse, with Nguyen et al., (2004) and Sethy et
al., (2006) both supporting C. reticulatum and C. echinospermum (both restricted to Southeastern Turkey) to be
the primary and secondary gene pools for the cultivated species respectively. However, apart from the estimated
domestication time of 5,700 BP, very little else is known of the genetic diversity of these species as well as the
genetic impact of the domestication process. Such information would lay ground for further research into these
species, allowing for genome wide association mapping into locally adaptive traits in wild species that could be of
agronomic importance. Hypotheses and research questions Cultivated chickpea will have lower levels of
nucleotide diversity relative to its wild progenitors. Such a reduction is attributed to a 'domestication bottleneck',
where only a small subset of individuals with desirable traits is chosen for cultivation. Additionally, there will be
reduction in diversity attributed to selective breeding that has over time targeted anthropocentric traits succeeding
domestication, that will be visible in select

Cannabis Seeds Research Paper
Healthy Cooking with Cannabis Seeds More and more states in the U.S. and countries around the world are
recognizing the wonders of medical marijuana, but did you know the seeds of the Cannabis plant have healing
powers of their own? These tiny seeds contain all the necessary fatty and amino acids to sustain a healthy human
body. The anti–inflammatory effect of these omega–6 and omega–3 fatty acids helps fend off a number of
conditions, including autoimmune and heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers.
Don't worry, eating cannabis seeds won't get you high, but they will help keep your arteries nice and open. They
are the most easily digestible form of vegetable protein than any other single plant source. Plus they taste really
yummy, nutty, and sweet. Try sprinkling raw, shelled seeds in your yogurt, oatmeal, fruit pies, puddings, stir–fries,
salads, and soups. Or mix a handful into the batter of such baked goods as muffins, cookies, and quick breads. ...

Chickpeas Temperature Experiment
According to Figure 1, the production of carbon dioxide changed based on the temperature the chickpeas were
placed in. It seemed that the chickpeas placed into the ice bucket at 5°C produced the most carbon dioxide;
however, this is not the case since the figure is only showing measuring the amount of ppm's recorded by the
carbon dioxide sensor. To get an accurate determination if temperature affected cellular respiration of chickpeas,
finding the slopes of the lines was necessary which was done in Table 1. This is done by using the mathematical
formula m=(y2–y1)/(x2–x1) with the "y" being the y–coordinate and "x" being the x–coordinate. To be consistent
the coordinate points at the 10 second and 240 second mark were used to find the slope ... Show more content on

The chickpeas in the hottest temperature tested produced the most amount of carbon dioxide meaning that the
cellular respiration rate of the chickpeas was increased. The coldest temperature tested also produced the least
amount of carbon dioxide meaning cellular respiration decreased in those chickpeas. For the most part the
experiment ran more smoothly than expected. A few time during testing the test chamber was knock over but
these accident had a minimal effect on the final outcome. There were sudden jumps when testing the runs in
Figure 1, but the jumps were never major enough to cause a retrial. These jumps can be attributed to the fact that
the carbon dioxide production was taken every 10 seconds in the 240 second experiment so anything outside
disturbance during that time was reflected in the data. Overall the data completely supports the hypothesis. The
42°C run produced the highest slope, the 5°C run produced the lowest slope, and the room temperature (22°) run
was in between the two other slopes. The 5°C run did have the most amount of ppm's recorded, but this means
nothing in the long run since the slope was still the lowest meaning it produced the least amount of carbon dioxide
over the 4 minutes. The results obtained corresponded with other students in the class who also tested the
relationship between cellular respiration and temperature as well as the studies discussed in the introduction

Evaluation And Identification Of Chickpea Resistance For...

  • 1. Evaluation And Identification Of Chickpea Resistance For... Mariem BOUHADIDA Ep KSIAA TUNISIA 1 Name: Mariem BOUHADIDA Ep KSIAA Country: TUNISIA Title of the project: Evaluation and identification of chickpea resistance for the main fungal diseases in Tunisia Background Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) is widely grown around the world and occupies the third position among food legumes in terms of cultivated areas (11.97 millon ha; FAOSTATAgriculture, 2010). Chickpea is considered a vital source of protein for food and feed in many countries, and allow the sustainability of cereal–legume cropping systems. Among the major biotic constraints in realization of full yield potential of chickpea in Tunisia, ascochyta blight (AB) caused by Ascochyta rabiei (Pass.) Labr. and fusarium wilt (FW) caused by the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... ciceris (0, 1A, 1B/C, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6) (Jiménez–Diaz et al., 1993). In addition, disease resistance for AB is considered to be a quantitative trait and numerous QTLs have been identified on the chickpea genetic map (Millán et al., 2010). While in the case of FW, resistance for race 0 is governed by two genes, Foc–01/foc–01 et Foc–02/foc–02, conferring, each one separately a total resistance to FW (Halila et al., 2009). Breeders are attempting to combine genes in a new cultivar to improve the level and durability of resistance, but this process is further complicated when different QTLs or genes control the same phenotype. Marker–assisted breeding (MAB) for AB and FW resistance would facilitate the development of new chickpea cultivars. Various AB resistance quantitative trait loci (QTLs) have been reported in the literature (Collard et al., 2003; Udupa and Baum, 2003; Iruela et al., 2006; Tar'an et al., 2007). Two quantitative trait loci (QTLAR1 and QTLAR2) associated with resistance to AB have been successfully targeted using allele specific markers. A codominant SCAR marker (SCY17590) tightly linked to QTLAR2 has been reported (Iruela et al., 2006) and was successfully employed to characterize blight resistance sources in chickpea (Imtiaz et al., 2008). A new co–dominant molecular marker (CaETR) was developed by Madrid et al. (2012) based on allelic sequence length polymorphism in an ethylene receptorlike gene located in the genomic region of QTLAR1, which confers AB ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Vegetarianism In Central And South America Vegetarianism is not a modern phenomenon. Indeed, as a lifestyle vegetarianism began with the Greek aesthetes and was subsequently adopted by many Romans who thought a frugal lifestyle to be beneficial to themselves and to the state. However, through much of human history people have relied on a mainly vegetarian diet to survive. The great civilizations of central and south America also had a predominantly vegetarian diet. This actually isn't as easy as it sounds, as the human body needs to source a number of proteins from the diet. Now, one way to ensure that these proteins are gained in adequate quantities is to combine grains and beans. This is why almost all cultures have their mix of the 'grain and bean' staple either as part of their current cuisines or as parts of their historical cuisines. In Africa, historically this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The interesting thing about this diet was the inclusion of chillies. Chillies both act to spice and flavour the food. However, the fresh chilli fruit are also a good source of vitamin C which is critical in a vegetarian diet as it aids in the uptake of non–haeme (ie non–blood) iron into the body. This may well explain why chillies spread worldwide so quickly and why they remain very important in countries and regions where meat remains, or historically was, a very small portion of the diet (Asia, the Caribbean, Africa and India). However, you don't have to have a subsistence diet to be a vegetarian, far from it. But the rules of the subsistence diet remains in terms of eating a healthy vegetarian diet. Mix grains and beans or mushrooms to ensure you get all the necessary dietary proteins. Add nuts for proteins and essential oils and ensure you have plenty of vitamin C in the diet. Beyond these basic rules what you eat is very much limited only by your own imagination and the number of ingredients you have to hand. Here, however, are some classic vegetarian dishes to get your ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Hummus Research Paper Many people regard hummus as the most representative Middle Eastern food. But I have never eaten hummus since I left the Middle East last year. There are several reasons for not having it either in China or in America. It is hard to find hummus in China. People in my area barely know what hummus is, or even chickpeas. After I came back to the US from China, I was able to purchase the hummus in plastic containers in grocery stores, but I didn't buy any. When I saw the hummus here in the US, I lost my desire to buy and eat because it is hard for me to relate the fresh made hummus to the ones here sitting in the fridge. So I decided to make my own hummus. I found a recipe online and bought most of the ingredients from local grocery store and Tahini from Black Cherry Mediterranean Market. Putting 3 cans of chickpeas, lemons juice of 2 lemons, a spoon of Tahini, a teaspoon of salt, 2 cloves of garlic, and 2 teaspoons of chickpeas liquid into a mixer. I like a little crunchy hummus better, so I didn't mix it for a long time. I sprinkled some fried pine nuts and added some olive oil before serving. It tastes much better than the ones I could purchase ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But when I tried the authentic hummus in the Middle East, I felt those that existed in the US shouldn't represent real hummus. Just as orange chicken should not be a representative Chinese food. They taste good, but it is hard to be accepted as an important part of the cultures. Whenever I think of hummus after the experience in Middle East, I think of the little plate of hummus with olive oil and different kinds of spices on top, or the little white container of hummus with different colors of toppings you can choose when you ordered to go. Industrialized mass production of hummus here is no more considered as a good middle eastern food in my mind. It is something easy and cheap to get in those local restaurants or sandwich shops, with a not simple of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Sometimes it's to spread on other food items. Bananas and whole wheat bread are my favorites. Other times, it's for your favorite dessert recipe, like 5–Ingredient Peanut Butter Cookies. The most memorable moments are those when you scrape it from the jar and eat it plain. Nutty goodness rushes to your taste buds. A satisfying earthy flavor takes over. The rice, quinoa and chickpeas burned to the bottom of my pressure cooker. Twice. The fourth trial was an overcorrection. Too much water. Yet since this trial was edible, I could taste I was on the right path. Here it is! Falafel is mainly made from chickpeas and can be given a form of kibble, small hamburger or ball which is fried with olive oil. Falafel is very tasty and easy to make and usually served as a starter or as a snack in warm pita bread. • 13. Michael Neto In my opinion, Neto's artwork wants to appeal to both the mind and the body, so in a way he is combining Dadaism and Minimalism. His work resembles Dadaism in that it uses readymades such as dry leaves and spices, he even says, "'I work with whatever I can find. If I can't find one spice, or it's too expensive, I'll use another. No problem,' Neto says.'" So, even though he cannot obtain the object he wanted he just uses another one because the idea is not in the object itself, but in his mind. Neto conveys Marcel Duchamp's manifesto where he states that it does not matter whether he made the work, what matters is that he chose it and gave it a new meaning. Here, Neto chose the dry leaves, stones and chickpeas and gave each of them a meaning of nature and life. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I personally felt astonished to see and touch a colorful masterpiece because usually the person is only the observer, but I like that in this case the artist valued my eyes as much as my body to grasp his idea of life emerging from the boa serpent. I also love his crochet style to form all of his works because he used a basic handicraft and made distinctive colorful patterns to show that something so simple can become very complex and important and act as the building block of life. Thus, Neto's one–of–a–kind recreation of how life started in his point of a view with an enthralling, colorful crochet style has marked in me the notion that life is love, the name Neto cleverly chose to name one of his pieces, no matter what form life takes its creation and beginning is beautiful and we should be grateful for ... • 15. Chickpea Lab Report The goal of this experiment was successfully accepted because the results showed a difference in moisture content between each of the three differently concentrated solutions. As shown in Figure 1, the more dilute the NaCl solution is, the more water absorption that takes place. The same trend can be noted within the normalized data, in which the more concentrated the NaCl solution is, the less water absorption that takes place. This pattern relates to the osmosis that the chickpea is encountering. Since NaCl is a larger molecule compared to water, the chickpeas will take in less NaCl molecules to occupy the same amount of space. Figure 2 is a graph of the normalized M (t) data, which shows an exponential increase in the moisture in the beginning ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Since, other factors could affect the rate of absorption of the chickpeas, one of these factors could be the size of the chickpea. The smaller the chickpea, the less mass there is for water to consume and the larger the chickpea, the more mass there is for water to consume. Another factor that can determine the size of the chickpea are the type. Since there are several different types of beans, each bean has a different semipermeable membrane. This means that different amounts of water can be absorbed by different types of beans, depending on the size of the pores located on the beans surface. Chickpeas were said to have increased two to three times their size, whereas other beans are known to only increase their size by two times.8 A third factor that could affect the amount of moisture absorbed would be the temperature. As shown in other journal articles, the hotter the solution temperature the faster and greater the chickpea absorption. Finally, another extension of this experiment would be to determine the rate constants of the Peleg equation using different types of legumes. Different types of legumes absorb water differently due to the semi–permeable membrane, therefore the rate constants would be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Of course there is chocolate, espresso, black beans and Beluga lentils, but even less common are squid ink pasta, charcoal bread, black garlic and black quinoa. Rarer still are black chickpeas or ceci neri. These foods from the dark side are filled with more antioxidants than light–colored foods because of their high pigment content. In fact, purple, blue, red and black whole foods are packed with anthocyanins, a powerful phytonutrient that may help reduce the risk of diabetes, heart disease and certain types of cancer. All organisms can do this process, which are heterotrophs (fungi, animals, protozoa & bacteria) & autotrophs (plants, algae, Cyanobacteria or Blue Green Algae). Peas undergo cell Respiration during germination, since when the peas are germinated, they will take in energy, which is oxygen, and than it will produce ATP that will produce carbon dioxide. In a more mature age, the seeds that they have doesn't have the required photosynthetic factors to produce energy. The objective is to measure the production of oxygen and carbon with the Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Sensor, and the Oxygen (O2) Sensor, and compare the production within 3 species or types of peas, which are Lima Beans, Pinto Beans, and Chickpeas. And also to see what factors will affect the production of O2 and CO2. Everything depends on the state of the Mitochondria, which is where Cellular Respiration occurs, it's stage of development, mostly when it is maturing, because that is where high Respiration rates occur, since everything of the plant or vegetable is growing, which is when it is harvesting. • 27. The Effects Of Heat Stress On The Food And Nutritional... Introduction According to the IPCC reports, an increase of 2–4°C in temperature is predicted globally by the end of the 21st century (IPCC 2007). It is also estimated that tropical and subtropical parts of the world will be the most affected areas by this rise in temperature (Battisti and Naylor 2009; Lobell and Gourdji, 2012). Moreover, due to rise in temperature, a noticeable change in plant phenology and yield was observed across different crop species and also within crop species (Ibanez et al., 2010). Thus, it is an urgent issue to be addressed with regard to heat stress to ensure the food and nutritional security. The rise in temperature beyond a threshold level for a period of time causing irreversible damage to plant growth and development is called heat stress. In general, a transient elevation in temperature, usually 10–15 ◦C above ambient, is considered heat shock or heat stress. The exposure to high temperature or heat stress affects the growth, development and physiological mechanism of the crop. Transitory or constantly high temperatures cause an array of morpho–anatomical (seed germination, fruit maturation etc.) physiological (photosynthesis, respiration, membrane stability etc.) and biochemical changes movement, transport of materials and hormones and primary and secondary metabolites) in most crops, which affect the crop growth and development. (Chen et al., 1982) Consequently, this may lead to a drastic reduction in cost–production ratio of the yield. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 29. Analysis: Lemon Cheesecake Cannoli And Chicken Salsa This week in lab, we completed the Iron Chef challenge. For this challenge, we had to create two dishes using the secret ingredient–flour tortillas–and ingredients from a list as well as proteins. Our curveball was that we had to use a food processor for one of our dishes. My group I made a Lemon Cheesecake Cannoli and a Chicken Salsa. The cannoli filling consisted of cream cheese, lemon pudding, lemon juice, and vanilla extract; the shell was made from a flour tortilla. It was topped off with granola and powdered sugar. Some of the salsa ingredients were chicken, turkey bacon, chipotle chilies in adobo sauce, chickpeas, tomatoes, onion, garlic, lime juice, and cheese. It was served with homemade tortilla chips. For the first two days in the lab, Autumn and I focused on making the cannoli while Tailhya and Emily focused on making the salsa. Prepping all the ingredients took about 15 minutes. To the make the cannoli, we first mixed up the ingredients for the filling in the food processor. This took about 20 minutes because the cream cheese made the filling very thick, so we had to keep adding some amounts of lemon juice to soften it up. Frying the cannoli shells only took about 5 minutes because the oil was very hot, so they cooked quickly. To make the salsa, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Crump. • 52. Food Fuel Lab Report : Food Burning Lab Sam Caplan Food Burning Lab Report Introduction: In the first experiment of the year, the food burning lab, the class explored how much energy is contained in different types of food. In order to understand the experiment, one must understand what energy is and the different types of energy that were explored in the experiment. Energy is the ability to get work done. There are many different types of energy that can help accomplish this. These include heat energy, kinetic energy, light energy, sound energy, and electric energy. In addition, there is another type of energy called potential, or stored energy. Potential energy, which is the focus of the food burning experiment, is the energy that is stored in every object. There are three different types of potential energy: gravitational, elastic, and chemical. Potential energy can be transferred into the other types of energy, the reason why it's called potential. An important fact to know about energy is that it can never be destroyed, only recycled and re–used. With chemical potential energy, a conversion to a different type of energy requires a chemical reaction. This means that in order to release the potential energy, a reaction is required to create or break chemical bonds. In the class' experiment, the class took different types of food and attempted to find out out how much potential energy is stored in their bonds. The class came up with a plan for the lab. Population Genetics Of Chickpea And Its Wild Progenitors C Population genetics of chickpea and its wild progenitors C. reticulatum and C. echinospermum Susan Moenga Introduction Chickpea, Cicer arietinum, is the second most widely grown legume in the world, cultivated on ~11.5 million ha mostly in India and Ethiopia (FAOSTAT, 2013). Genetic and molecular evidence have demonstrated that C. reticulatum is the progenitor of the cultivated pulse, with Nguyen et al., (2004) and Sethy et al., (2006) both supporting C. reticulatum and C. echinospermum (both restricted to Southeastern Turkey) to be the primary and secondary gene pools for the cultivated species respectively. However, apart from the estimated domestication time of 5,700 BP, very little else is known of the genetic diversity of these species as well as the genetic impact of the domestication process. Such information would lay ground for further research into these species, allowing for genome wide association mapping into locally adaptive traits in wild species that could be of agronomic importance. Hypotheses and research questions Cultivated chickpea will have lower levels of nucleotide diversity relative to its wild progenitors. Such a reduction is attributed to a 'domestication bottleneck', where only a small subset of individuals with desirable traits is chosen for cultivation. Additionally, there will be reduction in diversity attributed to selective breeding that has over time targeted anthropocentric traits succeeding domestication, that will be visible in select ... It seemed that the chickpeas placed into the ice bucket at 5°C produced the most carbon dioxide; however, this is not the case since the figure is only showing measuring the amount of ppm's recorded by the carbon dioxide sensor. To get an accurate determination if temperature affected cellular respiration of chickpeas, finding the slopes of the lines was necessary which was done in Table 1. This is done by using the mathematical formula m=(y2–y1)/(x2–x1) with the "y" being the y–coordinate and "x" being the x–coordinate. To be consistent the coordinate points at the 10 second and 240 second mark were used to find the slope ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The chickpeas in the hottest temperature tested produced the most amount of carbon dioxide meaning that the cellular respiration rate of the chickpeas was increased. The coldest temperature tested also produced the least amount of carbon dioxide meaning cellular respiration decreased in those chickpeas. For the most part the experiment ran more smoothly than expected. A few time during testing the test chamber was knock over but these accident had a minimal effect on the final outcome. There were sudden jumps when testing the runs in Figure 1, but the jumps were never major enough to cause a retrial. These jumps can be attributed to the fact that the carbon dioxide production was taken every 10 seconds in the 240 second experiment so anything outside disturbance during that time was reflected in the data. Overall the data completely supports the hypothesis. The 42°C run produced the highest slope, the 5°C run produced the lowest slope, and the room temperature (22°) run was in between the two other slopes. The 5°C run did have the most amount of ppm's recorded, but this means nothing in the long run since the slope was still the lowest meaning it produced the least amount of carbon dioxide over the 4 minutes. The results obtained corresponded with other students in the class who also tested the relationship between cellular respiration and temperature as well as the studies discussed in the introduction ...
