Marketing Manager
In this written assignment, I will be accepting the role of a marketing manager that will select a
product (good or service) that's sold in the United States and has sales opportunities in a foreign
market. The product I have chosen is Oreo's, are the world's favorite cookie. Throughout this
assignment, I will apply my critical thinking skills and the knowledge I have attained throughout
this course to the product that I have chosen.
The first steps in marketing are putting the right product out at the right price and the right time. All
of us have grown up with Oreo cookies, we all have our disputes as to the way to eat them dunking
them in milk or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In order for me to apply the STP approach in the American and foreign market is first I will have to
determine which types of customers exist, select which ones we would be able to serve best, and
then implement our segmentation by improving our cookies for that segment and show that we
made the choice to stand out and remain rare. The primary segment is one for who the product is
designed for, maximum revenue will come from the primary target market. These customers that
share common characteristics and behaviors account for the highest capacity of sales and are most
likely to buy now. The positioning of Oreo cookie is tempting to kids and teenagers they are the
highest consumers of cookies. The secondary market is future primary buyers, persons buying at a
high rate in a small segment and people who influence primary buyers. However their
characteristics and buying behaviors usually are different from those of the primary market. For
example this would be the persons that live a fast passed life style like adults, and working parents,
and grandparents. In order s to implement our target, we must begin positioning by choosing what
image the company would like to portray to our consumers. One way is for the company to maintain
a strong competitive advantage.

Group Think Essay
Group Think
This type of dysfunctional operation of an organization has many ways and opportunities for failure.
The basic fundamentals of this process are the beginnings of failure as groups seek conformity and
unity they sacrifice everything in order to maintain peace within the group. Many times this will
take the individuals creative thoughts and ability to voice the creative edge thinking away. In many
organizations this is a process that is continually used. It is perceived that management wants the
organizations operation or process to run without any type of question or waves. Below are listed
eight of the main symptoms of group think as detailed by Janis, I. L & Manns book "Decision
making"
Symptoms of Groupthink are divided ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Decision making is affected by the Group Think because of the lack of openness that should be
displayed and offered by everyone involved. The development of the organization is dependent on
the ability of the group to make decisions that are thought through and not made solely on pressures
and accepted or narrow minded ways that are not thought out.
More specifically, whenever a group making policy displays most of the symptoms of Groupthink
then "we can expect to find that the group also displays symptoms of defective decision–making.
Seven such examples are as Janis states:
1. Incomplete survey of alternatives.
2. Incomplete survey of objectives.
3. Failure to examine risks of preferred choice.
4. Failure to reappraise initially rejected alternative.
5. Poor information search.
6. Selective bias in processing information at hand.
7. Failure to work out contingency plans.
One of the worst Groupthink decisions ever was the decision to launch the Space shuttle Challenger.
"On the morning of January 28, 1986, the space shuttle Challenger blasted off from the Kennedy
Space Center in Florida
Seventy–three seconds after the countdown clock reached zero the Challenger exploded.
Immediately after the explosion President Reagan appointed a commission to find out why the
Challenger exploded. "In a five–volume published report, the presidential commission identified the
primary cause of

The Role Of Chinese Women In The Joy Luck Club
The concept of foot binding was a shocking concept for the role of Chinese women to submit
themselves to torture and represented a unique opportunity to gain the respect and recognition of the
in–laws in The Joy Luck Club and The Good Earth who would praise the beautiful tiny feet even
beyond the woman's dowry, as an undeniable proof of capacity and obedience. According to Tan,
"there are only two kinds of daughters, those who are obedient and those who follow their own
mind!" (142). Foot binding was a significant role for Chinese women and the concept of beauty no
matter the consequences of their pain in the body. The concept of obedience was the role of Chinese
woman that was focused in The Joy Luck Club, which was how the characters based their views on.
The Chinese mother's desire was for their daughters to follow the obedience concept and act
according to the regulations. For example, one of the mothers complained about not being able to
teach their daughter about the Chinese character, which would help obey her parents and listen to
her mother's mind. Another mother talked about herself and being obedient as Tan stated, "I was an
obedient wife; just as they taught me" (61). The Chinese mothers in the Joy Luck Club grew up with
an incredibly restrictive idea of what it meant to be a woman. They realized that there was no good
people in this world and only people who wanted to take advantage of their heart and soul. This
belief was also true in The Good Earth as O–Lan

Selfish Poor vs Selfless Poor In the short stories, "The Necklace" by Guy de Maupassant and "The
Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry both Mathilde and Della are different and alike in many ways.
Mathilde is a very selfish character and does not have a lot of money. In despite of this, she still
desires for a wealthy status. However, Della is the complete opposite. She is selfless and does not
have a lot of money. She gives up her valuables or prized possessions just to get her husband a
Christmas gift. Mathilde from "The Necklace" and Della from "The Gift of the Magi" have some
similarities, but also have differences; both are poor yet Della is giving and cherishes her money
while Mathilde ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Della Young is selfless(loving) while Madame Loisel is selfish is conceited as seen throughout the
stories. Mathilde's selfishness is seen when she talks to her husband. For example, "'It's hard to say
exactly but I think I could manage with four hundred francs. He went pale, for that was exactly the
amount he had put aside to buy a rifle so that he could go hunting the following summer near
Nanterre, with a few friends who went shooting larks around there on Sundays. However he said:
Well, all right. I'll give you four hundred francs. But try to get something really nice" (de
Maupassant 335). It is apparent that Mathilde Loisel is selfish because she forces her husband use
his money on her. On the other hand Dellas selflessness is shown when she says, "'Will you buy my
hair?' asked Della. "I buy hair," said Mathilde. "Take (that?) hat off and let's have a sight at the looks
of it.rue" Down rippled the brown cascade. "Twenty dollars," said Madame, lifting the mass with a
practiced hand. "Give it to me quick," said Della" (Henry 263). It is evident that Della is very
selfless due to the fact she tries to sacrifice her hair to purchase a gift for her beloved

A Short Note On The And El Efecto
vacío, no estimulación ejercicio.
La mayoría de los hombres no van a esperar un año entero para ganar 1 "y hacerlo de la manera
correcta, en vez piensan más que bombear más rápido los resultados. ¡EQUIVOCADO!
Bombas han existido por siglos porque los hombres siempre han

The Relationship between the People and the Land in Willa Cather's O Pioneers
'For the first time, perhaps, since that land emerged from the waters of the geologic ages, a human
face was set toward it with love and yearning'
This quotation cuts straight to the heart of Willa Cather's whole argument throughout O Pioneers!,
which is that it is Alexandra Bergson's will to survive and continually adapt which makes her
successful –the facts that her neighbours are unwilling to take up new ideas and technologies, they
are unwilling to gamble, and, worse, unwilling to listen to those whose relationship with the
landscape is harmonious and respectful (such as that of Ivar), mark them down as part of the legacy

Any difference or deviation is frowned upon in the most serious manner. Mrs Lee's comment about
hot water baths is that she cannot clean herself, cannot "make a strong suds" (page 54), so she
pretends to conform. There is no tolerance for the traditional ways or for non–conformists. This
disharmony within society is a greater division for Cather; it is a division between those who can
only think within the constraints of the past and the present; there is no evidence of a hunger for
progress, only for the rapid accumulation of wealth (as demonstrated by Lou's eagerness to sell out
to Charlie Fuller.) Randall quotes Cather herself in this: "A pioneer should have imagination, should
be able to enjoy the idea of things more than the things themselves." Only this second category of
people are those who 'own' the land. Cather is making a case in this novel (and subsequently in the
similarly themed My Antonia that the former sort of people are

Vertical Rocket Altimeter Experiment
The ratio seven to thirteen never gained any altitude, remaining at zero for every launch. They
merely burned and sputtered, then the ejection charge went off without ever getting off the ground.
As a result, all of its values, mean, median, mode, range, even standard deviation, are zeroes. This
means that all values are therefore significant within its set of values. The ratio ten to ten achieved
liftoff for two of its three launches, though only one of them actually escaped the guidance rod used
to keep the rocket going straight up. The one that did not travel upward instead burned and melted
its way through its PVC casing. The data set's values, five feet, two feet, and zero feet, have no
mode. Their mean is two and one third feet with a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the chemical formula, 5 C12H22O11 + 48 KNO3 → 24 K2CO3 + 36 CO2 + 55 H2O+24 N2, the
ratio of oxidizer to fuel is 48:5 in moles, or 4852.8 grams of potassium nitrate to 1711.5 grams of
sucrose, which simplify to 2.8 grams of oxidizer per gram of fuel. This means that the potassium
nitrate is used up 2.8 times faster than the sugar, therefore requiring more potassium nitrate to sugar.
None of the ratios tested have this exact proportion, in fact all of the ratios have a smaller
percentage of oxidizer than is advised, promoting the conclusion that the potassium nitrate is the
limiting reactant, running out first. The ratios simplify to as follows: 7:13 has 0.54 grams of oxidizer
per gram of fuel, 10:10 has a 1:1, and 13:7 being has 1.86 grams per gram of fuel. One would notice
that as the ratio of oxidizer–per–fuel increases, the launch height also increases. It can therefore be
determined that as one gets closer to the ratio of 2.8:1, the engines serve more positively, proposing
a direct correlation between the two. This serves an explanation as to why the thirteen to seven ratio
created the best results, whereas the other rockets created little to no

Comparing The Movie, O Brother Where Art Thou? And The...
Great pieces of artwork sometimes reflect ideologies of other works in a unique manner. For this
reason, this paper looks at the similarities that are apparent in the Coen brothers' film, O Brother
Where Art Thou? and the epic Greek poem, The Odyssey, by Homer. In particular, special reference
is given to the protagonists Ulysses in the movie and Odysseus in the poem. Without doubt, one is
forced to associate the concept of the movie made in 2000 to that of the great epic poem, which is a
work written around 700 B.C.
Even so, it is notable that the settings of these two pieces differ in one way or another, while the
characters seem so similar, and the experiences of the characters in the movie relate to the poem's
theme of perseverance. Nevertheless, it is also important to recognize the predominant comical
theme in the movie that is coupled with attention–drawing Gospel music, in addition to symbolic
scenes and references to concepts of repentance and salvation that have immense value for many
around the world. On the other hand, The Odyssey remains an unyielding classic.
The Odyssey tells of the journey of the protagonist Odysseus', who is striving to return home to his
wife. Similarly, the Coen brothers tell of someone who is also trying to reach home–in a uniquely
episodic nature. Joel Coen maintains that, "It's very loosely and very sort of unseriously based on
The Odyssey" (Woods 2000). The motion picture begins by depicting a call for a person full of life
skills;

The Good Earth O-Lan Quotes
In Pearl S. Buck's novel, The Good Earth, the protagonist, Wang Lung, starts out as a very poor
farmer in China. He marries a slave named O–lan and starts a family with her. Famine soon strikes
the town and there is no food to be found anywhere. Wang Lung moves his family South in hopes of
finding a job there. Eventually, a group of poor people raid the homes of the rich. Wang Lung and
O–lan both join in, getting away with enough gold and valuables to get back to their land in the
North. Wang Lung uses this stolen money to buy more land and hire laborers. He quickly becomes
one of the richest men in his town. Wang Lung, however, does not know that with great wealth
comes great responsibility. His wealth corrupts him and his moral judgements become blurred.

When talking to O–lan, Wang Lung implies that she is ugly. He exclaims, "Now anyone looking at
you would say you were the wife of a common fellow and never of one who has land which he hires
men to plow!" (pg.168) This statement is clearly disrespectful to O–lan and it likely stems from
Wang Lung's wealth. Wang Lung then cheats on O–lan with another woman (Lotus) from the tea
shop. The narrator says, "Every day he went to the tea shop; every evening he waited until she
would receive him, and every night he went into her" (pg.181). This suggests that Wang Lung now
prefers another woman over O–lan. As if he hadn't done enough damage already, Wang Lung brings
Lotus into his house to stay there permanently. He says, "Tell [Lotus] she shall do no work of any
kind in my house but she shall wear only silken garments and eat shark's fins every day" (pg.192).
This is very disrespectful to O–lan not only due to the fact that she is his wife, but also because
while she is doing housework, Lotus is being treated like a royal guest. It is evinced that Wang
Lung's wealth causes him to disrespect

in her arms and legs as well as muscle spasms. Breuer could not figure out why Anna was

No Sugar
'Jimmy Munday's fight for independence is doomed to fail.' Discuss. In No Sugar, Jack Davis
presents the tension of relations between the Aborigines and the Caucasians through the use of
dialogue, actions and the record of history on both sides. As witnessed in the quote "Native
Protector, couldn't protect my dog from fleas", the sarcastic remarks of Aborigine Jimmy Munday
contain a bitterness against the whites that etches deeper than their humour. The pithy honesty of his
insights is then illuminated by Davis's attribution of various actions by the white leaders in the play
towards the Aborigines. Finally Davis turns to accounts of the past, both written and oral, which act

'Coz wetjalas in this town don't want us 'ere, don't want our kids at the school, with their kids...". His
anger grows until the farce of Australia Day in Act Four, when before having a heart attack, he
interjects proceedings, shouting, "So [Mitchell] could have a nice, white little town, a nice, white
little fuckin' town." Jimmy's inept fury over white occupation and leadership is a vocalisation of all
those on the reserves who by definition lack the means and ability to challenge white authority
successfully. Davis adds to the audience's understanding of race relations gained from Jimmy's
insights through stressing some particularly harsh actions of the whites. Even when drunk Jimmy
can make the wisecrack, "Only time blackfellas git a ride off [the sergeant] is when he's takin' you to
gaol." The white attitude to the Aborigines shown in this comment is wry, as gaol is understood by
Jimmy to be "yuart, [nothing] only a wetjala thing. Don't worry about it." But the punishments dealt
out for being drunk are severe: Jimmy gets "three months with hard labour" for his sixth alcohol
offence, which is quite a jump from the 14 days he received for his previous offence. White
authority is highlighted by Davis in the figures of Chief Protector of Aborigines, Neville, and
Superintendent Neal. Both these men act outrageously to those in their care. In the third scene of the
play, Neville is presented as an efficient but cruel white administrator as he balances his budget in

Nas The Space Shuttle Essay
On the icy morning of January 28, 1986, seven brave people boarded the Challenger space shuttle.
All of America sat around their televisions watching and waiting for the space shuttle to finally lift
off. One of the seven people aboard this shuttle was Christa McAuliffe, a teacher in the Teachers in
Space program and would have been the first civilian to go into space. Her students were invited to
come to NASA and watch. The engines roar sounded loudly and the shuttle finally left the ground. It
was an illuminating sight to see, until a flame started at the base of the shuttle. The space shuttle
caught on fire what seemed like instantly, and exploded within seconds. Due to this tragedy, the
NASA space program has made several improvements to prevent tragedies like this one from ever
happening again (Carreau). NASA may have made improvements, but the horrifying memory of this
disaster will be embedded in the minds of the people of America and Christa 's class for the rest of
their lives. The day that the shuttle took off was not the original lift off date. The date that was
originally planned was January 25, 1986, but was cancelled due to weather conditions. This was the
first cancellation of many. On January 26, the weather condition was perfect, but due to the
cancellation the day before, the shuttle was not quite ready for takeoff yet. Just to make sure
everything was ready, the flight was rescheduled for the last time on January 28. Christa McAuliffe,

Inequality In Wang Lu's The Good Earth
Within The Good Earth, it is clear that inequality is prevalent in their society. The book The Good
Earth follows Wang Lu as he tends to his farm in China. Many literature experts tell how much this
book encapsulates life in China. The imagery, the social cues, and more are accurately described in
this book. Many people rave over the accuracy of this book, whether they enjoyed it or not, most
can agree that the definitive novel for Chinese culture at this time without a doubt had to be The
Good Earth. Whether it be religion, mortality, change, wealth, or politics, this book covered it all,

One of these forms called "foot binding" involved young girls being forced to bind their feet so they
looked more attractive. "At the age of three to 4 years, girls became the victim of the barbarous
custom of Foot binding which was supposed to start in the 10th century and have been in fashion
since the early 20th century." (Patel 771) When the girl turns three, or around that age, the mother
tucks her toes under the sole of her foot. She does this by using bandages to wrap them under. This
would reduce the foot's length by about three inches. A classic saying states "For every pair of
bound feet, a bucket full of tears." Currently, only nineteen women remain in the world with bound
feet. The main character of the book, Wang Lu, supports all of this pain and suffering because of
feudalism. The true definition of feudalism involves peasants doing labor and sharing a portion of
the produce in exchange for military protection from the government, which may not seem similar
to Wang Lu and O–Lan at first, but the simile here makes sense. O–Lan, or any Chinese housewife
in this time, would do labor, the chores, bind their feet, and so on in exchange for a roof over their
heads and a place to sleep at night. Wang Lu, however, may not be the only one to support this
ideals. In chapter 28, his son states, "I desire a maid from a village, of good landed family and
without poor relatives, and one who will bring a good dowry with her, neither plain nor fair to look
upon, and a good cook, so that even though there are servants in the kitchen she may watch them.
And she must be such a one that if she buys rice it will be enough and not a handful over and if she
buys cloth the garment will be well cut so that the scraps of cloth left over should lie in the palm of
her hand. Such an one I want." (Buck 290) With young men looking up to their fathers and mothers,

Pros And Cons Of Using Car Air Conditioning
Using Car Air Conditioning Stop Leak
Here were going to discuss the pros and cons of using car air–conditioning stop leak. Many people
with old rides give up when the AC stops working because these repairs can be so expensive.
In fact it's not uncommon for an AC repair estimate to exceed the total value of the automobile. With
that said, you can repair a leaking Schrader valve for under $50.
This is why it's important to find out what's wrong. When you finally do go to sell your old ride and
operating air–conditioning system will increase the value and could close the sale on a hot summer
day.
With the low cost of air–conditioning stop leak it's tempting to go ahead and throw a can in the
system and see if it solves all your problems. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It's an amazing little device is also used to hold the air pressure into your tires.
This is often an overlooked area where Freon can leak out of your car. The device can loosen up and
lose it seal and leak tiny amounts of Freon over long periods of time. Using the leak detection
methods discussed on this page doesn't work for the AC Schrader valve.
When you install the dye you will get some of that liquid on the Schrader valve so it will always
indicate a leak. Not only can it loosen up over time but systems that get a lot of maintenance or had
a lot of problems can wear out the rubber O–ring seals on the Schrader valve.
A lot of times when mechanics say they can't find the leak is because they didn't check the air–
conditioning Schrader valve with a halogen Freon leak detector. This is a sniffing device that sounds
an alarm when it senses different types of refrigerant. Since is heavier than air you actually have to
place the sensing probe below the Schrader valve not

Analysis Of O Pioneers By Willa Cather
O Pioneers by Willa Cather is a different novel from those of its time. It is a novel that stands for
women equality represented by the main character Alexandra. O Pioneers reveals a story about
Alexandra's struggle against nature and being a strong woman in a male dominated profession and
society. She succeeded in establishing her female identity and achieved a sense of female self–
fulfillment by transforming the wild land and struggling for her equal rights with men. This paper
focuses on the feminist thoughts and pioneering spirit of the great image of the heroine Alexandra,
who was independent, brave, and optimistic. Getting strength and courage from her such spirit,
Alexandra would never be defeated by either men or nature. "One January day, thirty years ago, the
little town of Hanover, anchored on a windy Nebraska tableland, was trying not to be blown away"
(Cather, 1987, p. 1.). The novel begins in the small town of Hanover where all the farmers and some
of their children go to relax after the long working season. Of those community members, resides
young Alexandra Bergeson who was with her younger brother Emil. She was a tall strong girl who
was driven. "She wore a man's long ulster (not as if it were an affliction, but as if it were very
comfortable and belonged to her; carried it like a young soldier), and a round plush cap, tied down
with a thick veil" (Cather, 1987, p.2.). Although the description of Alexandra's appearance was
prominent, Willa Cather had her

poor hard working farmer and now he is a rich, mysterious business man. The riches are starting to

know you were this rich (136)." It almost seems like Wang Lung is trying to impress everyone with
his good fortune and is basically rubbing his riches in everyone's face. The book is giving us
examples of what riches could do to us and the author is using this book as a guide to help people,
possibly. You should never let your possessions change who you are and letting money control your
life is a sign of weakness mentally in the brain. Wang Lung could not control his wallet which got

Good Earth Responses
In chapter 1 of The Good Earth we are introduced to the protagonist Wang Lung and are given an
overview of his life style. We also are informed that he is about to get married and yet has no clue of
what his wife is like. This fact is told when the first sentence says, "It was Wang Lung's marriage
day." and the second quote, "We will have to see what is to be had",which indicates he doesn't know
what his wife looks like. The most apparent thing that is prominent in the chapter is Wang Lung's
excitement for having children. This is shown when he states, "The house would be full of beds."
When Wang Lung finally sees his wife there seems to be a rather awkward aura between them.

Feminism In Willa Cather's 'O Pioneers !'
Willa Cather, a nineteenth century American female writer, used her childhood experiences growing
up on the great plains of Nebraska to write about a woman named Alexandra Bergson and her
struggles on her family's farm on the Nebraskan frontier in the book, O Pioneers! ("Willa Sibert
Cather"). The narrator follows Alexandra throughout her life, and shows how she became successful
while overcoming the patriarchy. Conversely, Cather also wrote about a young, confused girl named
Marie Tovesky, who found herself in a crumbling relationship, not sure if she loved the man she
married, or Alexandra's sibling Emil. Her story both regales the reader with a tragedy, but also
shows how others treated and oppressed women during that time. Cather's O Pioneers! tells the tales
of two women who find themselves on varying levels of society, and uses their stories to address
feminism. Alexandra Bergson grew up in the small town of Hanover, Nebraska on her family's farm,
otherwise known as The Divide. After many catastrophes blighted the farm, her father, John Bergson
was on the brink of death. Feminism first appears here, when, on his deathbed, John Bergson gave
his farm to Alexandra because she was the one who "...read the papers and followed the markets,
and who learned by the mistakes of their neighbors", and the one who "...could always tell about
what it had cost to fatten each steer, and who could guess the weight of a hog before it went on the
scales..." (Cather

The Fascinating Tale of Jell-o in an Article by Sarah E....
In 1992, in the 51st volume of Western Folklore, Sarah E. Newton published her article: "The Jell–O
Syndrome": Investigating Popular Culture/Foodways. In this piece, Newton discusses the history
and impact of Jell–O, gelatin desert, in American foodways and pop culture since its establishment
in 1897 (252). Without delay, Newton acquaints her intentions, as her thesis vows to use research to
take readers on a cultural and historical journey–or "exotic byway" as she calls it (249), into the
fascinating tale of Jell–O. Through that research, she is arguing the level or significance of Jell–O in
American foodways, as she believes this "versatile" invention has not received the respect in the
foodways department that she thinks it deserves (249). Newton starts off by referencing the large
frequency in which Jell–O is used in American recipes. Newton defends these statements by
pointing out the overwhelming usage of Jell–O as an ingredient for salads and desserts in numerous
American cookbooks (250). This is a questionable approach. Although it is understandable to
reference American cookbooks for the frequency of usage of an ingredient, a few books is not a big
enough sample of the thousands that exist. Also, not all American families own cookbooks or use
them on a regular basis as a reference for cooking, nor is it guaranteed that they use any recipes in
the book that incorporate Jell–O. Lastly, Newton introduces Americans' emotional bond to Jell–O,
emphasizing the "fun" that

Wang Lung And O-Lan Analysis
Wang Lung and O–lan had a very close connection to their land. He builds this connection to earth
of how the earth has done everything for him. And once his life is over he will be part of the earth
and he will provide for the next generation.
Buck gives the impression that Wang Lung is very greedy and doesn't like to give away his silver
because wealth corrupts. He had to earn the silver with his time and when you give it away you are
giving away your life.
Wang Lung becomes sexist when he says a female is considered a person who no one wants. He
then begins to pray for the child to die due to smallpox and it being female. He doesn't want to care
for the child because it is female. If it was his son he would think otherwise.

Case Study Mondelez International Strategy
Mondelez International Strategy Case Study
Mondelez International Inc. is a large manufacturer and marketing company with a variety of
beverage products and snack foods. The company came into existence in 2012 when Kraft Foods
Inc. went through a corporate restructuring in order to implement "high–growth global snacks."
(Gamble, 2016.) Nabisco, Oreo, Trident gum, and Oscar Mayer are a few brands that operate under
Mondelez Inc.
Corporate Strategy As I mentioned above, Mondelez was created to fit a need that Kraft Foods Inc.
had to increase their growth globally. Kraft Foods Inc. established their name in 2007 when they
broke apart from Altria Group. Kraft became the second–largest processed food company in 2012
with annual revenues of more than $54 billion in 2012 (Gamble, 2016). However, significant growth
in the company was not much different from that in 2007 when they became independent. It is the
belief of the company's upper management and board that the reason for their stagnation was due to
the fact that their corporate strategy was not focused on the growth of the company. This changed in
2012 when Kraft teamed up with Mondelez International Inc. "Mondelez International's strategy
was directed at exploiting its powerful brands of snack foods across the 165 country markets where
its products were sold." (Gamble, 2016) The company aimed to fulfill their strategy by expanding

Bertha Pappenheim
Bertha Pappenheim is perhaps most famous for Josef Breuer's study of (and writing about) her, but
his treatment lasted only a couple of years–she herself spent nearly thirteen years, between 1882 and
1895, actively attempting to reconstruct herself. The aim of this reconstruction was to grow not only
from her illness but also from her previous life as a bourgeois homemaker, from the healthy aspects
of her grief for her father, and (perhaps most notably) from her immense emotional reliance on
Breuer himself. In fact, far more effectively than when working with Breuer, Pappenheim's own
agency and motivation helped her to move successfully from her previous private fantasies into a
new context of major political and social change. It is possible to examine Pappenheim's later life in
terms of her illness and subsequent treatment–and indeed, her experience with illness and her

Although his diagnoses are somewhat suspect, Breuer gave her validation, worldly experience, and
ultimately the place from which she began her self–reconstruction. She did most of the
reconstruction on her own–choosing to end her relationship with Breuer, withdrawing from the
narcotics to which she became addicted, writing and publishing her work, moving away from
Vienna to Frankfurt, and eventually taking a job. However, though Breuer's treatment itself may not
have had as large an influence on her later life as might be expected, the timing of her illness
impacted quite a lot. The major peculiarities that Pappenheim experienced were to do with her living
situation–she was precluded from marrying, for example, and lived with her mother. Additionally,
her tendency to tell stories to Breuer may have a connection to her later successes as a

Relationships and Setting in Willa Cather's O Pioneers!
O Pioneers!(1993) by Willa Cather begins on a blustery winter day, in the town of Hanover,
Nebraska, sometime between 1883 and 1890. The narrator introduces four main character: the very
young Emil Bergson; his older sister, Alexandra; her friend Carl Linstrum; and a little girl, Marie
Shabata. Alexandra's father, John Bergson, is dying. He tells his two oldest sons, Lou and Oscar, that
he is leaving the farmland, and all of what he has accomplished, to their sister.
Alexandra is a hard working young lady and will do anything to make her father proud. When the
drought and depression struck three years later, Alexandra's determination to keep the farm allows
her to persevere. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Lou and Oscar are married and each of them owns their own farm. Alexandra's farm is still the most
prosperous on the entire Divide. Emil is grown up and is leaving the Divide for the State University.
Carl Linstrum returns for a long visit after years of being gone. Marie is unhappily married and it
becomes very evident that her and Emil are falling in love.
This novel measures the influence of an individual against human desires and the forces of nature.
For example, Alexandra's relationship with the land summarizes the struggle between human desires
and the larger forces than manipulate individuals. This difficult relationship between individuals and
society is one of the most dominant themes and is depicted throughout the novel by using setting to
reflect the characters.
In the first sentence, Cather establishes a sense of symbolism when the narrator states "...the little
town of Hanover...was trying not to be blown away" (1). Cather is personifying the prairie's
existence to help paint a picture of both the beauty and the difficulty of pioneer life. Much of the
opening section of the novel focuses itself to a description, and more importantly, to a
characterization of the land, setting personified forces and individuals into conflict with each other.
In this novel, the forces of nature are so powerful that they overwhelm the settlers. The narrator
states this fact when stating, "The record of the plow was insignificant, like the feeble scratches on

O Pioneers By Willa Cather Analysis
O Pioneers!: The Land and the American Dream It seems that everything in Willa Cather's O
Pioneers!, aside from the land, starts out so full of life and ends so utterly devoid of it. It could even
be said that the characters in the novel become imprisoned by their own lives. Marie is barred by her
love, which, in the end, leaves her quite literally lifeless. Alexandra, who initially is so full of life,
begins to view her life as unimportant and as a prison house. Even the spirituality of the pioneers is
ever declining and dying away. Ultimately it is Frank who embodies the idea most obviously; in his
youth Frank lives the life of a happy, handsome man, yet his life ends in utter despondence and
literal imprisonment. How is it that all of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Alexandra puts her entire life into the land. In fact, Alexandra seems to exemplify the land itself.
She epitomizes the American Dream and everything it stands for. She takes a raw piece of
Nebraskan soil and works it until it becomes bountiful and she becomes wealthy and seemingly
successful. In all of her success in achieving the American Dream, very little is said about
Alexandra's own hopes and dreams. Though Alexandra is the only one to have achieved anything
close to the American Dream, she is the only character to become completely downhearted. In the
novel it is written that "she was actually tired of life" (112) and that "what was left of life seemed so
unimportant" (113). She also relates life to a poem she loved as a girl, and the poem reads as
follows: Hence Forth the world will only be/A wider prison–house to me...(118). Regardless of the
fact that Alexandra signifies everything that is the American Dream, she is still unhappy with and
imprisoned by life. It is not until she indulges in her own dream, the companionship of Carl
Linstrum that she begins to see life in an optimistic light. Another element soiled by the standards of
America is the spirituality of the pioneers. The best example of this is illustrated in the novel's
character Ivar. While the church itself rejects Ivar and most of Hanover wants to send him to an
asylum, he is probably one of the most spiritual people in the entire prairie. Ivar has a personal

A Short Note On The And Its Effects
A agricultura

  • 1. bus330 final Essay Marketing Manager of Oreos Bus 330 Dr. Shiquita P. Blue 01/20/2014 Marketing Manager In this written assignment, I will be accepting the role of a marketing manager that will select a product (good or service) that's sold in the United States and has sales opportunities in a foreign market. The product I have chosen is Oreo's, are the world's favorite cookie. Throughout this assignment, I will apply my critical thinking skills and the knowledge I have attained throughout this course to the product that I have chosen. The first steps in marketing are putting the right product out at the right price and the right time. All of us have grown up with Oreo cookies, we all have our disputes as to the way to eat them dunking them in milk or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In order for me to apply the STP approach in the American and foreign market is first I will have to determine which types of customers exist, select which ones we would be able to serve best, and then implement our segmentation by improving our cookies for that segment and show that we made the choice to stand out and remain rare. The primary segment is one for who the product is designed for, maximum revenue will come from the primary target market. These customers that share common characteristics and behaviors account for the highest capacity of sales and are most likely to buy now. The positioning of Oreo cookie is tempting to kids and teenagers they are the highest consumers of cookies. The secondary market is future primary buyers, persons buying at a high rate in a small segment and people who influence primary buyers. However their characteristics and buying behaviors usually are different from those of the primary market. For example this would be the persons that live a fast passed life style like adults, and working parents, and grandparents. In order s to implement our target, we must begin positioning by choosing what image the company would like to portray to our consumers. One way is for the company to maintain a strong competitive advantage. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The basic fundamentals of this process are the beginnings of failure as groups seek conformity and unity they sacrifice everything in order to maintain peace within the group. Many times this will take the individuals creative thoughts and ability to voice the creative edge thinking away. In many organizations this is a process that is continually used. It is perceived that management wants the organizations operation or process to run without any type of question or waves. Below are listed eight of the main symptoms of group think as detailed by Janis, I. L & Manns book "Decision making" Symptoms of Groupthink are divided ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Decision making is affected by the Group Think because of the lack of openness that should be displayed and offered by everyone involved. The development of the organization is dependent on the ability of the group to make decisions that are thought through and not made solely on pressures and accepted or narrow minded ways that are not thought out. More specifically, whenever a group making policy displays most of the symptoms of Groupthink then "we can expect to find that the group also displays symptoms of defective decision–making. Seven such examples are as Janis states: 1. "On the morning of January 28, 1986, the space shuttle Challenger blasted off from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida Seventy–three seconds after the countdown clock reached zero the Challenger exploded. Immediately after the explosion President Reagan appointed a commission to find out why the

The Role Of Chinese Women In The Joy Luck Club The concept of foot binding was a shocking concept for the role of Chinese women to submit themselves to torture and represented a unique opportunity to gain the respect and recognition of the in–laws in The Joy Luck Club and The Good Earth who would praise the beautiful tiny feet even beyond the woman's dowry, as an undeniable proof of capacity and obedience. According to Tan, "there are only two kinds of daughters, those who are obedient and those who follow their own mind!" (142). Foot binding was a significant role for Chinese women and the concept of beauty no matter the consequences of their pain in the body. The concept of obedience was the role of Chinese woman that was focused in The Joy Luck Club, which was how the characters based their views on. The Chinese mother's desire was for their daughters to follow the obedience concept and act according to the regulations. For example, one of the mothers complained about not being able to teach their daughter about the Chinese character, which would help obey her parents and listen to her mother's mind. Another mother talked about herself and being obedient as Tan stated, "I was an obedient wife; just as they taught me" (61). The Chinese mothers in the Joy Luck Club grew up with an incredibly restrictive idea of what it meant to be a woman. They realized that there was no good people in this world and only people who wanted to take advantage of their heart and soul. This belief was also true in The Good Earth as O–Lan ... Compare The Selfish Poor And Selfless Poor Alexa Raphael English I (2) Ms. Jankoski 14 December 2017 Selfish Poor vs Selfless Poor In the short stories, "The Necklace" by Guy de Maupassant and "The Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry both Mathilde and Della are different and alike in many ways. Mathilde is a very selfish character and does not have a lot of money. In despite of this, she still desires for a wealthy status. However, Della is the complete opposite. She is selfless and does not have a lot of money. She gives up her valuables or prized possessions just to get her husband a Christmas gift. Mathilde from "The Necklace" and Della from "The Gift of the Magi" have some similarities, but also have differences; both are poor yet Della is giving and cherishes her money while Mathilde ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Della Young is selfless(loving) while Madame Loisel is selfish is conceited as seen throughout the stories. Mathilde's selfishness is seen when she talks to her husband. For example, "'It's hard to say exactly but I think I could manage with four hundred francs. He went pale, for that was exactly the amount he had put aside to buy a rifle so that he could go hunting the following summer near Nanterre, with a few friends who went shooting larks around there on Sundays. However he said: Well, all right. I'll give you four hundred francs. But try to get something really nice" (de Maupassant 335). It is apparent that Mathilde Loisel is selfish because she forces her husband use his money on her. On the other hand Dellas selflessness is shown when she says, "'Will you buy my hair?' asked Della. "I buy hair," said Mathilde. "Take (that?) hat off and let's have a sight at the looks of it.rue" Down rippled the brown cascade. "Twenty dollars," said Madame, lifting the mass with a practiced hand. "Give it to me quick," said Della" (Henry 263). The Relationship between the People and the Land in Willa Cather's O Pioneers 'For the first time, perhaps, since that land emerged from the waters of the geologic ages, a human face was set toward it with love and yearning' This quotation cuts straight to the heart of Willa Cather's whole argument throughout O Pioneers!, which is that it is Alexandra Bergson's will to survive and continually adapt which makes her successful –the facts that her neighbours are unwilling to take up new ideas and technologies, they are unwilling to gamble, and, worse, unwilling to listen to those whose relationship with the landscape is harmonious and respectful (such as that of Ivar), mark them down as part of the legacy of ignorant, ... Mrs Lee's comment about hot water baths is that she cannot clean herself, cannot "make a strong suds" (page 54), so she pretends to conform. There is no tolerance for the traditional ways or for non–conformists. This disharmony within society is a greater division for Cather; it is a division between those who can only think within the constraints of the past and the present; there is no evidence of a hunger for progress, only for the rapid accumulation of wealth (as demonstrated by Lou's eagerness to sell out to Charlie Fuller.) Randall quotes Cather herself in this: "A pioneer should have imagination, should be able to enjoy the idea of things more than the things themselves." Only this second category of people are those who 'own' the land. Cather is making a case in this novel (and subsequently in the similarly themed My Antonia that the former sort of people are ... They merely burned and sputtered, then the ejection charge went off without ever getting off the ground. As a result, all of its values, mean, median, mode, range, even standard deviation, are zeroes. This means that all values are therefore significant within its set of values. The ratio ten to ten achieved liftoff for two of its three launches, though only one of them actually escaped the guidance rod used to keep the rocket going straight up. The one that did not travel upward instead burned and melted its way through its PVC casing. The data set's values, five feet, two feet, and zero feet, have no mode. In the chemical formula, 5 C12H22O11 + 48 KNO3 → 24 K2CO3 + 36 CO2 + 55 H2O+24 N2, the ratio of oxidizer to fuel is 48:5 in moles, or 4852.8 grams of potassium nitrate to 1711.5 grams of sucrose, which simplify to 2.8 grams of oxidizer per gram of fuel. This means that the potassium nitrate is used up 2.8 times faster than the sugar, therefore requiring more potassium nitrate to sugar. None of the ratios tested have this exact proportion, in fact all of the ratios have a smaller percentage of oxidizer than is advised, promoting the conclusion that the potassium nitrate is the limiting reactant, running out first. The ratios simplify to as follows: 7:13 has 0.54 grams of oxidizer per gram of fuel, 10:10 has a 1:1, and 13:7 being has 1.86 grams per gram of fuel. One would notice that as the ratio of oxidizer–per–fuel increases, the launch height also increases. It can therefore be determined that as one gets closer to the ratio of 2.8:1, the engines serve more positively, proposing a direct correlation between the two. This serves an explanation as to why the thirteen to seven ratio created the best results, whereas the other rockets created little to no ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 20. Comparing The Movie, O Brother Where Art Thou? And The... Great pieces of artwork sometimes reflect ideologies of other works in a unique manner. For this reason, this paper looks at the similarities that are apparent in the Coen brothers' film, O Brother Where Art Thou? and the epic Greek poem, The Odyssey, by Homer. In particular, special reference is given to the protagonists Ulysses in the movie and Odysseus in the poem. Without doubt, one is forced to associate the concept of the movie made in 2000 to that of the great epic poem, which is a work written around 700 B.C. Even so, it is notable that the settings of these two pieces differ in one way or another, while the characters seem so similar, and the experiences of the characters in the movie relate to the poem's theme of perseverance. Nevertheless, it is also important to recognize the predominant comical theme in the movie that is coupled with attention–drawing Gospel music, in addition to symbolic scenes and references to concepts of repentance and salvation that have immense value for many around the world. On the other hand, The Odyssey remains an unyielding classic. The Odyssey tells of the journey of the protagonist Odysseus', who is striving to return home to his wife. Similarly, the Coen brothers tell of someone who is also trying to reach home–in a uniquely episodic nature. Joel Coen maintains that, "It's very loosely and very sort of unseriously based on The Odyssey" (Woods 2000). The motion picture begins by depicting a call for a person full of life skills; ... He marries a slave named O–lan and starts a family with her. Famine soon strikes the town and there is no food to be found anywhere. Wang Lung moves his family South in hopes of finding a job there. Eventually, a group of poor people raid the homes of the rich. Wang Lung and O–lan both join in, getting away with enough gold and valuables to get back to their land in the North. When talking to O–lan, Wang Lung implies that she is ugly. He exclaims, "Now anyone looking at you would say you were the wife of a common fellow and never of one who has land which he hires men to plow!" (pg.168) This statement is clearly disrespectful to O–lan and it likely stems from Wang Lung's wealth. Wang Lung then cheats on O–lan with another woman (Lotus) from the tea shop. The narrator says, "Every day he went to the tea shop; every evening he waited until she would receive him, and every night he went into her" (pg.181). This suggests that Wang Lung now prefers another woman over O–lan. As if he hadn't done enough damage already, Wang Lung brings Lotus into his house to stay there permanently. He says, "Tell [Lotus] she shall do no work of any kind in my house but she shall wear only silken garments and eat shark's fins every day" (pg.192). In No Sugar, Jack Davis presents the tension of relations between the Aborigines and the Caucasians through the use of dialogue, actions and the record of history on both sides. As witnessed in the quote "Native Protector, couldn't protect my dog from fleas", the sarcastic remarks of Aborigine Jimmy Munday contain a bitterness against the whites that etches deeper than their humour. The pithy honesty of his insights is then illuminated by Davis's attribution of various actions by the white leaders in the play towards the Aborigines. Jimmy's inept fury over white occupation and leadership is a vocalisation of all those on the reserves who by definition lack the means and ability to challenge white authority successfully. Davis adds to the audience's understanding of race relations gained from Jimmy's insights through stressing some particularly harsh actions of the whites. Even when drunk Jimmy can make the wisecrack, "Only time blackfellas git a ride off [the sergeant] is when he's takin' you to gaol." The white attitude to the Aborigines shown in this comment is wry, as gaol is understood by Jimmy to be "yuart, [nothing] only a wetjala thing. Don't worry about it." But the punishments dealt out for being drunk are severe: Jimmy gets "three months with hard labour" for his sixth alcohol offence, which is quite a jump from the 14 days he received for his previous offence. All of America sat around their televisions watching and waiting for the space shuttle to finally lift off. One of the seven people aboard this shuttle was Christa McAuliffe, a teacher in the Teachers in Space program and would have been the first civilian to go into space. Her students were invited to come to NASA and watch. The engines roar sounded loudly and the shuttle finally left the ground. It was an illuminating sight to see, until a flame started at the base of the shuttle. The space shuttle caught on fire what seemed like instantly, and exploded within seconds. Due to this tragedy, the NASA space program has made several improvements to prevent tragedies like this one from ever happening again (Carreau). NASA may have made improvements, but the horrifying memory of this disaster will be embedded in the minds of the people of America and Christa 's class for the rest of their lives. The day that the shuttle took off was not the original lift off date. The date that was originally planned was January 25, 1986, but was cancelled due to weather conditions. This was the first cancellation of many. On January 26, the weather condition was perfect, but due to the cancellation the day before, the shuttle was not quite ready for takeoff yet. One of these forms called "foot binding" involved young girls being forced to bind their feet so they looked more attractive. "At the age of three to 4 years, girls became the victim of the barbarous custom of Foot binding which was supposed to start in the 10th century and have been in fashion since the early 20th century." (Patel 771) When the girl turns three, or around that age, the mother tucks her toes under the sole of her foot. She does this by using bandages to wrap them under. This would reduce the foot's length by about three inches. A classic saying states "For every pair of bound feet, a bucket full of tears." Currently, only nineteen women remain in the world with bound feet. The main character of the book, Wang Lu, supports all of this pain and suffering because of feudalism. The true definition of feudalism involves peasants doing labor and sharing a portion of the produce in exchange for military protection from the government, which may not seem similar to Wang Lu and O–Lan at first, but the simile here makes sense. O–Lan, or any Chinese housewife in this time, would do labor, the chores, bind their feet, and so on in exchange for a roof over their heads and a place to sleep at night. And she must be such a one that if she buys rice it will be enough and not a handful over and if she buys cloth the garment will be well cut so that the scraps of cloth left over should lie in the palm of her hand. The most apparent thing that is prominent in the chapter is Wang Lung's excitement for having children. This is shown when he states, "The house would be full of beds." When Wang Lung finally sees his wife there seems to be a rather awkward aura between them. In chapter 2 of The Good Earth Wang Lung and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 52. Feminism In Willa Cather's 'O Pioneers !' Willa Cather, a nineteenth century American female writer, used her childhood experiences growing up on the great plains of Nebraska to write about a woman named Alexandra Bergson and her struggles on her family's farm on the Nebraskan frontier in the book, O Pioneers! ("Willa Sibert Cather"). The narrator follows Alexandra throughout her life, and shows how she became successful while overcoming the patriarchy. Conversely, Cather also wrote about a young, confused girl named Marie Tovesky, who found herself in a crumbling relationship, not sure if she loved the man she married, or Alexandra's sibling Emil. Her story both regales the reader with a tragedy, but also shows how others treated and oppressed women during that time. Cather's O Pioneers! tells the tales of two women who find themselves on varying levels of society, and uses their stories to address feminism. Alexandra Bergson grew up in the small town of Hanover, Nebraska on her family's farm, otherwise known as The Divide. After many catastrophes blighted the farm, her father, John Bergson was on the brink of death. Feminism first appears here, when, on his deathbed, John Bergson gave his farm to Alexandra because she was the one who "...read the papers and followed the markets, and who learned by the mistakes of their neighbors", and the one who "...could always tell about what it had cost to fatten each steer, and who could guess the weight of a hog before it went on the scales..." • 54. The Fascinating Tale of Jell-o in an Article by Sarah E.... In 1992, in the 51st volume of Western Folklore, Sarah E. Newton published her article: "The Jell–O Syndrome": Investigating Popular Culture/Foodways. In this piece, Newton discusses the history and impact of Jell–O, gelatin desert, in American foodways and pop culture since its establishment in 1897 (252). Without delay, Newton acquaints her intentions, as her thesis vows to use research to take readers on a cultural and historical journey–or "exotic byway" as she calls it (249), into the fascinating tale of Jell–O. Through that research, she is arguing the level or significance of Jell–O in American foodways, as she believes this "versatile" invention has not received the respect in the foodways department that she thinks it deserves (249). Newton starts off by referencing the large frequency in which Jell–O is used in American recipes. Newton defends these statements by pointing out the overwhelming usage of Jell–O as an ingredient for salads and desserts in numerous American cookbooks (250). This is a questionable approach. Although it is understandable to reference American cookbooks for the frequency of usage of an ingredient, a few books is not a big enough sample of the thousands that exist. Also, not all American families own cookbooks or use them on a regular basis as a reference for cooking, nor is it guaranteed that they use any recipes in the book that incorporate Jell–O. Lastly, Newton introduces Americans' emotional bond to Jell–O, emphasizing the "fun" that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Case Study Mondelez International Strategy Mondelez International Strategy Case Study Mondelez International Inc. is a large manufacturer and marketing company with a variety of beverage products and snack foods. The company came into existence in 2012 when Kraft Foods Inc. went through a corporate restructuring in order to implement "high–growth global snacks." (Gamble, 2016.) Nabisco, Oreo, Trident gum, and Oscar Mayer are a few brands that operate under Mondelez Inc. Corporate Strategy As I mentioned above, Mondelez was created to fit a need that Kraft Foods Inc. had to increase their growth globally. Kraft Foods Inc. established their name in 2007 when they broke apart from Altria Group. Kraft became the second–largest processed food company in 2012 with annual revenues of more than $54 billion in 2012 (Gamble, 2016). However, significant growth in the company was not much different from that in 2007 when they became independent. It is the belief of the company's upper management and board that the reason for their stagnation was due to the fact that their corporate strategy was not focused on the growth of the company. This changed in 2012 when Kraft teamed up with Mondelez International Inc. "Mondelez International's strategy was directed at exploiting its powerful brands of snack foods across the 165 country markets where its products were sold." (Gamble, 2016) The company aimed to fulfill their strategy by expanding the company's product line to include cookies, chocolates, candy, gum, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 66. Bertha Pappenheim Bertha Pappenheim is perhaps most famous for Josef Breuer's study of (and writing about) her, but his treatment lasted only a couple of years–she herself spent nearly thirteen years, between 1882 and 1895, actively attempting to reconstruct herself. The aim of this reconstruction was to grow not only from her illness but also from her previous life as a bourgeois homemaker, from the healthy aspects of her grief for her father, and (perhaps most notably) from her immense emotional reliance on Breuer himself. In fact, far more effectively than when working with Breuer, Pappenheim's own agency and motivation helped her to move successfully from her previous private fantasies into a new context of major political and social change. It is possible to examine Pappenheim's later life in terms of her illness and subsequent treatment–and indeed, her experience with illness and her relationship ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although his diagnoses are somewhat suspect, Breuer gave her validation, worldly experience, and ultimately the place from which she began her self–reconstruction. She did most of the reconstruction on her own–choosing to end her relationship with Breuer, withdrawing from the narcotics to which she became addicted, writing and publishing her work, moving away from Vienna to Frankfurt, and eventually taking a job. However, though Breuer's treatment itself may not have had as large an influence on her later life as might be expected, the timing of her illness impacted quite a lot. The major peculiarities that Pappenheim experienced were to do with her living situation–she was precluded from marrying, for example, and lived with her mother. O Pioneers!(1993) by Willa Cather begins on a blustery winter day, in the town of Hanover, Nebraska, sometime between 1883 and 1890. The narrator introduces four main character: the very young Emil Bergson; his older sister, Alexandra; her friend Carl Linstrum; and a little girl, Marie Shabata. Alexandra's father, John Bergson, is dying. He tells his two oldest sons, Lou and Oscar, that he is leaving the farmland, and all of what he has accomplished, to their sister. Alexandra is a hard working young lady and will do anything to make her father proud. When the drought and depression struck three years later, Alexandra's determination to keep the farm allows her to persevere. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lou and Oscar are married and each of them owns their own farm. Alexandra's farm is still the most prosperous on the entire Divide. Emil is grown up and is leaving the Divide for the State University. Carl Linstrum returns for a long visit after years of being gone. Marie is unhappily married and it becomes very evident that her and Emil are falling in love. This novel measures the influence of an individual against human desires and the forces of nature. For example, Alexandra's relationship with the land summarizes the struggle between human desires and the larger forces than manipulate individuals. This difficult relationship between individuals and society is one of the most dominant themes and is depicted throughout the novel by using setting to reflect the characters. In the first sentence, Cather establishes a sense of symbolism when the narrator states "...the little town of Hanover...was trying not to be blown away" (1). Cather is personifying the prairie's existence to help paint a picture of both the beauty and the difficulty of pioneer life. Much of the opening section of the novel focuses itself to a description, and more importantly, to a characterization of the land, setting personified forces and individuals into conflict with each other. In this novel, the forces of nature are so powerful that they overwhelm the settlers. The narrator states this fact when stating, "The record of the plow was insignificant, like the feeble scratches on the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 70. O Pioneers By Willa Cather Analysis O Pioneers!: The Land and the American Dream It seems that everything in Willa Cather's O Pioneers!, aside from the land, starts out so full of life and ends so utterly devoid of it. It could even be said that the characters in the novel become imprisoned by their own lives. Marie is barred by her love, which, in the end, leaves her quite literally lifeless. Alexandra, who initially is so full of life, begins to view her life as unimportant and as a prison house. Even the spirituality of the pioneers is ever declining and dying away. Ultimately it is Frank who embodies the idea most obviously; in his youth Frank lives the life of a happy, handsome man, yet his life ends in utter despondence and literal imprisonment. How is it that all of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Alexandra puts her entire life into the land. In fact, Alexandra seems to exemplify the land itself. She epitomizes the American Dream and everything it stands for. She takes a raw piece of Nebraskan soil and works it until it becomes bountiful and she becomes wealthy and seemingly successful. In all of her success in achieving the American Dream, very little is said about Alexandra's own hopes and dreams. Though Alexandra is the only one to have achieved anything close to the American Dream, she is the only character to become completely downhearted. In the novel it is written that "she was actually tired of life" (112) and that "what was left of life seemed so unimportant" (113). She also relates life to a poem she loved as a girl, and the poem reads as follows: Hence Forth the world will only be/A wider prison–house to me...(118). Regardless of the fact that Alexandra signifies everything that is the American Dream, she is still unhappy with and imprisoned by life. It is not until she indulges in her own dream, the companionship of Carl Linstrum that she begins to see life in an optimistic light. Another element soiled by the standards of America is the spirituality of the pioneers. The best example of this is illustrated in the novel's character Ivar. While the church itself rejects Ivar and most of Hanover wants to send him to an asylum, he is probably one of the most spiritual people in the entire prairie. Ivar has a personal relationship ... • 78.
