The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas Rhetorical Analysis
In The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas, the author Le Guin establishes the idea that one can
not enjoy happiness that results from the immoral, discriminatory victimization of someone
else. Upon first look, the city of Omelas seems like a fairy tale utopia where everyone is happy,
yet underneath this veil of splendor, there is a child that is neglected and abused to the point of
where some people are so sickened that they must leave Omelas. All of Omelas s glamour and
joy depends solely on the suffering of this child, and if the child were to be rescued, all goodness
in Omelas would be destroyed. The people of Omelas know that theirs is no vapid irresponsible
happiness. They know that they, like the child, are not free (47). The passage reveals that the
people fully understand the terms of the child s misery.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, their happiness is not even true happiness because it is constantly shadowed by the
knowledge of the child s suffering, and yet paradoxically, they feel morally obligated to be
happy for the sake of the child. In a sense, they are so bound to the child that they do not have
any more freedom than the child itself. In contrast, there are also people who are so disturbed by
this dark secret of the child that they leave Omelas...toward [a] place...that [possibly] does not
exist. But they seem to know where they are going (47). To leave Omelas for the unknown would
need considerable courage, but they know that they will never be truly happy staying in Omelas.
Just like how the people of Omelas know that the joy built upon successful slaughter is not the
right kind of joy, those who leave understand that happiness at the expense of a scapegoat, such as
the child, is also not the right kind of joy

Bringing Joy At The Poverty
Bringing Joy to People in Poverty Giving back to those who are less fortunate is something that
should be obliged as being an individual who is a part of the community. For some people, their
necessities are evident. When we see someone without a proper backpack or needed school
supplies, it could be that their family does not have the money to get them these things. When
people go to a clothes closet, it s because that they are in need of clothes and can t afford it. When
children who didn t received a gift for Christmas, it s because their parents couldn t afford it due to
their low income. Those less fortunate people in our community that need certain necessities isn t
so evident. Some may have passed this point by getting a high... Show more content on

Additionally, being given something can make individuals feel like a worthy part of the
community. Indeed, I hope to gain by completing this project is that the gratification of assisting
individuals such as children to bring joy into their lives with donations. Furthermore, I hope to gain
by completing this project is that to implement ways to get involved and help the community. The
issue we have chosen to address with the service project is that many innocent people are living in
poverty and it isn t right to live that way due to their low income, which leads to decreasing the
individual s happiness and reduce their ability to thrive and succeed. By this issue, there are
people affected because many families can t supply the right items or supplies for themselves due
to low income. According to the United States Census Bureau, in 2014, about 46.7 million people
are suffering from this issue alone in the United States. The number of people living in poverty is
slightly rising each year. Yet, organizations such as the Family GivingTree and the Milpitas Food
Pantry exist to address the issue we picked. The plan we had created as a group has four parts to it.
First, we needed to contact the organization about where to deliver the donations, since the Family
Giving Tree had a warehouse and a office located at different places and we weren t sure where to
deliver the donations. We

The Media and Eating Disorders Essay example
The Media and Eating Disorders
It is funny how so many girls and women today are led to believe that the only way to feel
attractive and be beautiful is to have their bodies consist of nothing but skin and bones. Women
are dieting more today then they have ever been before. They are striving for an unattainable body
figure that is portrayed by the media as being the ideal standard for today s women. It gets worse.
Not only are women dieting unlike ever before, but they will ruthlessly harm their bodies in order
to achieve these inaccessible standards. This ruthless harm that haunts so many women today just
so happens to be what we call eating disorders. Anorexia and bulimia are the primary diseases that
go in the category of eating ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is something obviously wrong with these statistics. Women who subject themselves to these
circumstances are fighting against their own body make ups in order to fulfill the standards put out
by the media. In order to change these staggering statistics in the future, we must examine what the
media does to make girls and women obtain eating disorders.
When researchers asked one hundred eighteen female, college aged students to look at twenty
pictures in ads from women s magazines, they felt a sudden change in mood after the pictures
were observed. There was notable depression in the women, a depression that has seemed to hit
many women after leafing through women s magazines (Key and Lindgren 11). This depression is
due to the fact there are so many negative messages being conveyed in advertisements that are
published in women s magazines. But who can blame the women for their depression anyway?
When the majority of the ads in women s magazines show super skinny models advertising nice
clothes, makeup, jewelry, etc., one might find themselves to be a little down. Skinny models
portray their figures to be the cultural norm in Western society today. How often does one find a
model in a woman s magazine that is over a size six that is not shown advertising plus size
merchandise? The answer is not very often, or sometimes never at all. If women do not see their
body type being depicted in

Compare And Contrast Don Juan Movie And Play
Although both in the movie and the play the characters Don Juan have similar abilities seducing
woman, there is a great deal of difference between movie Don Juan and play Don Juan. Don Juan
character description in play is more of a feisty character. He is one of those characters that if
you tell them they can t do something, they go out or their way to prove you wrong or if you
challenge them they go above and beyond, crossing all limits to win the bet. It seems dignity and
pride are all they live for and nothing else matters. Don Juan lived for the present and winning the

Earth Moving Equipment
Introduction
Earth moving equipment are the machines human make to replace the hard work from the human;
the machines made by humans to perform digging; grading; leveling; removing; etc to earth
moving from one side to the other side. There is Bulldozer, excavator, grader, loader, roller,
forklift, tractor, bobcat, and truck, etc.
Earth moving equipment is replacing the hard tough work; back break jobs to easy jobs for the
workers. Machines do a lot better than the human force. They can do a big job in the short time.
So the time can be save and finish the job earlier, leading to the economic affect. They run by the
power machines, so they do not need a lot of people in the same task. Most of the equipment can

The special task of this machine is digging.
In the early age when the human tools are just the picks, shovels. With the basic tools, men must
work very hard to tackle the job. Now the machines are in place after time to time to refine, the
excavator 322B appears to help. This unit is used to replace the manpower by machine, with the
circle rate very fast; it can do the job better on the field. It can dig or pick up a huge amount of dirt
and ship it aside. It can break the rock to the small pieces to level the surface in a limit time. The
machine can handle a job equal to 200 man power in daily work.
This machine was built to counteract the need of huge digging job around the field. It operates with
the other earth moving machines such as dump truck, loader, etc
We can see this machines every where: around the field, in the habour, in city, on the side of the
road. Perhaps it is busy digging sand, breaking down rock, digging the drain lines, and lifting a
piece of concrete. Really, it is a great machine.
The machine is run by tracks. The speed is up to 5.5 km/hr. The huge arm attaches to the body of
the unit. With the hydraulic system, the arm can stretch out, fold in, lift high in the sky, and dig
deep into the surface of the earth. With the special basket located on the tip of the arm, it can dig
deep into the ground, pick up soil then swing around to unload to the truck located

Duck Creek Watershed Essay
Background (1 В¶): What is the Duck Creek Watershed? What problems is it facing? What is
being done so far to remedy these problems? Who is working on this problem?
The Duck Creek watershed in Scott County, IA is currently facing high levels of Escherichia coli
(E. coli) bacteria contamination. This pollution has put the watershed on the impaired waters list
for the state of Iowa. The impaired waters list is a comprehensive list of every waterway in a state
that has a contamination problem according to EPA regulations (insert source for impaired waters
explanation EPA regulations). Much of the pollution that can be found in the Duck Creek watershed
is coming from nonpoint source (NPS) pollution. Nonpoint source pollution significantly
contributes to the deterioration of water quality due to the difficulty in identifying, assessing and
controlling the sources of this type of pollution (citation Wang). This pollution is caused by runoff
moving over the land. It picks up and carries away natural and human made pollutants, finally
depositing them into lakes, streams, rivers, wetlands and even our underground sources of drinking
water (citation SCSWCD). Examples of nonpoint sources in the watershed could include failing
septic systems, livestock access to streams, pastures full of manure, fertilizers applied to crops,
miscellaneous urban sources such as gasoline or oil, pet waste, and wildlife (citation SCSWCD).
Another source of NPS pollution is that conventional urban storm

The Importance Of Lying
From early childhood, one is typically taught that lying is something that must never be done.
Although it is customarily frowned upon, it is a bad habit that many people acquire. No matter
one s age, gender, or even religion, many people continue with this bad habit. Personally, I do not
believe it is possible for someone to live a life without having lied at least a few times. Yes, lying
is seen as bad, but I believe it mainly depends on the circumstances. Lying is necessary
sometimes, because it can help with feelings, getting one out of trouble, or even bettering a
situation. It is very common for people to experience a break up; whether it is with a friend or a
significant other, it happens a lot. Ending a relationship is never easy, especially when you are
the one being left. Quite a few people turn to lying when it comes to situations like these. I
myself have experienced a bad break up, and lies were certainly told. Back then of course, I did
not see it as a positive thing, but looking back I understand why lies had to be told. When it comes
to a situation like breaking up, telling a lieor two could actually help with the feelings involved.
When you lie, you do not necessarily have to tell the person something negative. This is why I do
not consider it lying, but more of altering the truth. By altering the truth, you hurt the other person s
feelings less, which will help with the heeling process; making the little lies worth telling in the
long run. Based off the

The South Was Prepared For A Major War
By the 1860s, neither the North nor the South was prepared for a major war. However, while the
north at least had a functioning government in place, more resources to begin with, and a more
effective leader, the South had virtually nothing in comparison. They lacked infrastructure and
population to serve in the military, their finances were in shambles, and they had a weak leader.
These factors played a great impact in determining the outcome of the war. Having sufficient
resources is imperative to success during a time of war. Whether it is monetary or material, it lays
the foundation for the other factors of success to come together and ultimately win the war. In the
south, however, they lacked many of these vital resources needed... Show more content on

This allowed their soldiers to be more well equipped at all times versus the southern soldiers who
were sporadically armed and whose basic necessities sometimes weren t met. Along with material
resources, the North s population was much greater than that of the South s. 2.1 million people
fought for the North, which represented nearly half of the eligible population, whereas only
900,000 people fought for the South, which made up 90 percent of its eligible population. The
North also had an inflow of Irish and German immigrants who enlisted to fight in place of some
native Northerners. Many ex slaves from the South also fought for the Union, again increasing the
North s numbers. Another hindering resource for the Confederacy was their financial situation.
Their unstable finances turned out to set them back more than their lack of industrial capacity.
Their economy relied on cotton exports, however a Union blockade made this revenue stream
almost nonexistent. To make up for this loss in revenue, the government tried to raise taxes, but
southerners resisted taxation (Goldfield, The American Journey, 408). The government then sold
bonds, but as the Confederacy lost money, bond sales drastically decreased. With few options left,
the Confederate government started printing money to finance the rest of the war. This

Gaius Julius Caesar Analysis
The Things Which are Caesar s
Gaius Julius Caesar was a military commander, a Roman consul, and Dictator of Ancient Rome.
His military victories, cult of personality, and influence on Roman life brought him respect in
Rome. Cicero, an orator of the era, confirmed Cesar s accounts of his role during the civil war. In
representing his own role in the Roman Civil War, Julius Caesarsketches a picture of his influence
on his contemporaries that rings true when compared to Cicero s documentation of the same
period. Though Caesar praises himself while Cicero scorns him, a consistent picture of Caesar s
influence emerges from a close reading of the two authors: he instilled fear in the hearts of Roman
Senators and inspired loyalty in Roman Citizens.
In Caesar s account in The Civil War, he presents the Roman Senators persecuting him as
unreasonable and himself as justified, a contrast to Cicero s personal criticisms of the commander.
Caesar states that the Senate is punishing him for his moderate demands (pg. 37). Caesar accounts
that the Roman Senate refuses to dismantle Pompey s army, in addition, he states that the Roman
Senate is using unnecessary measures against him, as he recounts, ...harsh measures were
advocated; and the more savage and vindictive the speaker, the more he was applauded by Caesar
s enemies (pg.36 40). This account paints Caesar s opponents as harboring a vendetta which will
result in destruction for Rome. Caesar portrays the Senate s persecution

The Tuskegee Untreated Syphilis Experiment
In 1946 to 1948 the United States, with the help of cooperating Guatemalan health ministries and
officials, led a horrible experiment on innocent people infecting them with syphilis to see how
effective peninsilyn would be in treating the disease. Doctors had infected soldiers, prostitutes,
mental patients and prisoners without their knowledge or consent, and treated most but not all with
antibiotics, primarily penicillin. About 76 percent of the nearly 1500 subjects infected with the
disease were given adequate treatment and about one quarter of the test subjects had documents of
completing the treatment process. This act was a direct violation of human rights, the experiment

Immigration Position Paper
Immigration: A Time for Reform amp; Reevaluation By Ricardo Cerna Devry University
/ January 2012 / English 112 Immigration reform is the old yet new revitalized hot topic being
discussed in the media which will not seem to fade away from the spot light despite its drawbacks.
The reality of that ongoing debate is that this country, and the State of California in particular, was
founded by immigrants fleeing an oppressive government, yet this same country and state now
oppress immigrants fleeing from similar situations trying to reestablish new lives within its borders.

Advantages and Disadvantages of International Trade
Introduction
The exchange of goods and services among countries is known as international trade. It is the
foundation of a global economy, where prices, supply and demand factors affect and are affected
by events all around the world. Such trade provides an opportunity for countries to be exposed to
products unavailable domestically and to provide their local products to foreign markets (Heakal,
2015). The following sections will discuss the benefits and drawbacks of international trade.
Advantages of International Trade
Given that the world is interdependent, economic progress of a country depends upon its relations
with other nations (Shukla, 2009). Through strong international trade, economies have flourished
and gained power to control and steer the global economy (Economy Watch, 2010). Over the years,
it has offered a wide range of benefits to various economies across the globe. The rising importance
of international trade has been fueled by contemporary production techniques, innovative
transportation systems, transnational organizations, outsourcing activities and expeditious
industrialization (Economy Watch, 2010). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Local production can suffer as domestic industries become dominated by foreign competitors and
go out of business (Shukla, 2009). As a result, the local economy can become dependent on
foreign economies, leading to loss of local employment (V.Vijayasri, 2013). Overdependence on
affluent economies can be risky as they can impose their political agendas on weaker economies in
order to exploit them (Shukla, 2009). Exploitation also occurs in the form of embargoes and other
trade restrictions imposed in case differences arise among trading nations (V.Vijayasri,

Sacco And Vanzetti Essay
Sacco and Vanzetti Trial
What happens when change meets tradition?
When change and tradition meet change is usually met with denial or acceptance. We see this
strongly in the 1920 s with things like women s rights and other points of views being viewed as
dangerous or inappropriate. Women in more urban areas in the 1920 s were becoming more open
and independant and while they accepted this, many people in rural areas saw this as inappropriate.
We even see this in the Sacco and Vanzettitrial. Sacco and Vanzetti were anarchists, and just for
believing in something different than everyone else they were put to death for something they may
or may have not done. Overall when change and tradition meet, they clash until eventually change
wins and is accepted among the majority of people. Change scares people because with change

Greek Gods and Goddess
The Greek Gods:
Ancient vs. Modern Views
According to ancient Greek mythology the Greek gods and goddesses had at one time lived the
savage, brutal and ugly life of humans. Eventually, however, they managed to rise above this
ancient fierceness to become the nineteen elder gods and goddesses the Greeks knew as The
Titans, who ruled the earth in a primordial era before the Olympian gods overthrew them. The
ancient Greeks of the first millennium before the Christian era believed that the ruler of the Titans
was Cronus, who was rebelled against and ultimately dethroned by his own son Zeus. When faced
with the choice between who to support, most of the Titan gods and goddesses decided to fight
with Cronus against Zeus, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The ancient Greeks firmly believed in the divinity and power of the Titans and Olympians. They
worshipped these gods and goddesses, feared them, implored them for help, and considered them
responsible for everything that happened on earth. Today, most of the people who are interested in
Greek mythology and in the gods and goddesses of Olympus consider their interest purely
scholarly. Other people who study Greek mythology do so for simple entertainment, or to
satisfy their curiosity about the Olympian gods and goddesses, who were certainly colorful,
vibrant, and interesting figures. The relationships of the gods and goddesses with one another,
and their love affairs, disputes, triumphs, and tragedies are fascinating to some of us today, for
they were all related, and always seemed to be intent upon some mischief or grand scheme that
involved love, betrayal, or intrigue. In fact, life on Mount Olympus reminds many modern
students of Greek mythology as one big soap opera, for despite their perceived divinity by the
ancient Greeks, the gods and goddesses acted in very human ways, and displayed human
emotions, flaws, and weaknesses. These characteristics are what scholars of today find so
interesting about the Titans and Olympians, for the portraits of the gods and goddesses of ancient
Greece are in fact portraits of the ancient Greeks themselves. The society of the gods and goddesses

When our entrees came out I was shocked. I didn t believe how much they give you every time.
Buca is very generous with their portions and does great job of making their famous pastas. The
chicken Parmigianino was absolutely fabulous. The chicken had a nice texture to it especially

pasta went really well with the chicken. On the other hand the chicken alfredo was not what I

Art And Acceptance Stemming From Adversity
Drag queens demand attention, from their over the top makeup, to the towering wigs they wear,
when they enter on stage, they have all the attention in the room. That attention has changed from
horror, to disgust, to appreciation in the past 200 years but the culture of drag queens has always
stayed true to being a community for men who do not fit into the mold of what is deemed normal.
It has been a safe haven and a family for those who do not have anywhere else. Through this culture
we see strength, art and acceptance stemming from adversity. Some key aspects of this culture, that
help us understand it, are the role drag queens play in the LGBTQ community, the language they
use, their history, the reason why gay men are attracted to this community and what they gain from
it.
At its core, the culture of drag queens, as it is today, is centred around the performative act of their
shows. Their shows include men, usually gay, impersonating woman while lip synching and
dancing . Confusion may arise over the difference between crossdressing, transvestites and drag
queens. The important separation, as Jessica StrГјbel Scheiner describes, is that, The drag queen is
a self identified man who has no desire to live as a woman, nor become a woman , she explains that

3.2. Electrocatalytic Oxidation and Determination of Dibucaine and Naphazoline Using Silver
Polymer
In this study, polymer of [AgL]n was immobilized onto the surface of a glassy carbon electrode
(GCE), which leads to the efficient electrocatalytic oxidation of Dibucaine and Naphazoline. The
GCE was previously tested in PBS buffer (pH = 3) before polymer were drop coated on it. It
presented no redox process in the potential range applied. The working electrode coated with
polymer of [AgL]n was immersed in the electrolyte solution for 20 min prior to the measurement
to ensure the diffusion of the solution to the interlayer space and permit better ionic exchange. The
cyclic voltammograms were recorded for Dibucaine and Naphazoline at modified electrode and
are shown in Fig.4. As it can be seen, at the surface of the modified electrode, oxidations of
Dibucaine and Naphazoline are irreversible processes. These results indicate that the electron
transfer rate is quite slow. Such slow electron transfer kinetics is due to the electrode fouling caused
by the evidence of Dibucaine and Naphazoline and their oxidation products.
In addition, at modified electrode, oxidation of these compounds resulted in a typical

Temple Of Portunus
Another example of Republic architecture is the Temple of Portunus. The temple was built
between 120 to 80 BCE and is a well preserved rectangular building in Rome. It is located near
Rome s ancient river harbor and is dedicated to the god, Portunus god closely associated with
harbors. Like the Temple of Jupiter, the Temple of Portunus is constructed on a high podium and is
overlooking the ancient harbor. It s also rectangular in form with the same Ionic column filled
portico. It has a very strong front, so there is no mistaking the entrance. This temple reveals the

The Impact Of Abraham Lincoln s Emancipation Proclamation
President Abraham Lincoln, sometimes called The Great Emancipator , is best remembered today
for his Emancipation Proclamation. This proclamation, issued in September 1862 and enacted at
the start of 1863, freed all slaves in rebelling states in the Confederacy and had a dramatic impact
on the outcome of the Civil War. However, even though Lincoln was morally against the concept of
slavery, he had previously stated that he had no intention of abolishing it. Why did he explicitly
violate his own word? Multiple factors played a part in Lincoln s decision to emancipate the
slaves. Firstly, as the conflict progressed from a minor rebellion to a full blown civil war, Lincoln
felt that the Emancipation Proclamationwould strengthen the Union s... Show more content on

As the war progressed, however, it became clear that the war was not just a short rebellion and that
there was no hope of keeping the country from outright Civil War. At that point, it was clear that
the war was built on the issue of slavery, and Lincoln saw that by clarifying the Union s position on
slavery, he would strengthen their position in the war.
Although Lincoln might not have initially seen the Civil War as war about slavery, but the slaves
in the South disagreed they immediately took the war as an opportunity to gain freedom. Another
reason Lincoln issued the Emancipation proclamation was that by 1862, the emancipation of the
slaves would only benefit the Union while hurting the Confederacy. Upon the start of the fighting,
numerous slaves escaped to Union lines, assuming that the army would give them protection. This
presented a dilemma for the Union. The Fugitive Slave Act was still in place, which meant that any
general that encountered an escaped slave should have return them to their masters. Although some
generals did this, many others welcomed slaves into their armies, calling them contrabands of war .
Lincoln, who was sure that these defiant actions would further enrage the Confederacy yet had no
intention of returning the slaves to their masters, presented a number of alternative plans for the
slaves, including colonization (freed slaves would be delivered to Central

when Hele gives us a brief description of Ms. Temple, Miss Temple is full of goodness: it pains
her to be severe to anyone, even the worst in the school: she sees my errors, and tells me of them
gently: and, if I do anything worth of praise she gives me my meed liberally (Bronte 67). With

correcting her faults just as a mother would, connecting back to her first name Maria. Moreover,
we see her pleasant nature connect to her last name Temple by a description given by Jan, Miss

The House Of The Scorpion Chapter Summary
A Hero s Journey is a cycle of events, each coming and returning. Many different myths and stories
throughout time seem to have a homogeneous framework that follows the Monomyth Theory
proposed by mythologist, Joseph Campbell. In his book, The Hero With a Thousand Faces,
Campbell states the elements of the Heros Journey. The Hero s Journey cycle is prevalent in many
literary works as well as The House of the Scorpion. This book, by Nancy Farmer, is an epitome
of Campbell s Monomyth Theory where the young Matt Alacran is the archetypal hero. There are
many details in The House of the Scorpion that classifies Matt as the archetypal hero, all of which

The Use of Compulsory Licensing as a Policy to Combat the...
This paper examines the use of compulsory licensing as a policy to combat the monopoly problem
associated with the patent system. It introduces the notion of an optimal patent one where the
patent life and the licensing royalty rate are both determined optimally. Under certain simplifying
assumptions it is shown that the optimal patentwill have an indefinite life, for both process and
product innovations. Some preliminary calculations suggest that the use of compulsory licensing
may lead to substantial welfare improvements, even if the patent life is left unchanged at 17 years.
India has put in place a patent regime that allows the grant of patents for both products and
processes for all eligible inventions. The changes made in 1999, 2002 and 2005 have been
ostensibly to comply with its WTO ob ligations on intellectual property. How ever, an analysis of
the changes suggests that there were some in Indian industry and government who believed that
stronger patent protection, even beyond what is required under India s international obligations,
will attract local R D as well as foreign direct investment.
It is universally recognized in patent laws that an invention must meet the triple criteria of novelty,
inventive step (or be non obvious) and industrial applicability (or utility) in order to be granted a
patent.
NEED FOR PATENT:
In the 2005 amendment, in the case where patent applications were filed in the mailbox between
1995 and 2005, and these were commercially

Analyzing
Once the scanning of the factors that has been identified is done, it has to be analysed to know the
impact on the business at different stages of the business. Again there are several tools available
for analyzing the scanned environmental variables which could be used for scenario building
cases, benchmarking and for even Delphi techniques. In all the tools that is being used for
analyzing would gather the data and analyse in the similar fashion. In this type of analysis
conducted on the gathered information, mean median, mode, correlation and regression are
calculated. The method of analyzing may vary depending upon the factor that is being analysed
(Kotler P. and Lee R. 2008).
Forecasting
When the environmental factors are analysed, it is important to make it clear for the organisation
regarding the impact of the environmental factor that could be made on the organisation in the near
future. The main reason for analyzing the current data with the historical data is to forecast the
impact that could be made on the organisation. from the forecast that has been made on the
environmental factors, a business strategy is devised by the management in order to manage the
business in response to the analysis carried out.
The environmental analysis is carried out on the internal and the external business environmental
factors. The internal analysis describes the strength, weakness, opportunities and the threats of the

Wal Mart As A Symbol Of The United States

years, Wal Mart had 38 locations and was opening two stores per year. In 1970, the company
started trading in the New York Stock Exchange. By 1979, the company announced a record
$1billion sales and it became the first company to do so. Wal Mart reached record after record
during those years, and by the end of 1989, Wal Mart reported after tax profits of $1billlion. Wal
Mart now has become a symbol of the United States, and it is the biggest employer in the world
with approximately 2.2 million workers with operations in 27 different countries. Wal Mart s
revenue is gargantuan; they were ranked number one by Fortune Magazine in 2001, with a
revenue of $219.8bn. At this point, Wal Mart sales are around $1billlion per day. The incredible
rise of Wal Mart from a little store in Arkansas to one of the biggest companies todayis
astonishing; however, it has not come without its problems. During the early 1980 s, employees
tried to unionize in one of the distribution centers in Arkansas. Walton told the workers that if they
unionize, he would remove the employees profit sharing plan and replace them with other
employees. Another scandal Wal Mart faced was in its Made in America campaign, during which
most of the clothes sold in Wal Mart were manufactured in sweatshops in developing countries. The

Impact Of Climate Change On The Environment
Introduction: Climate change is an issue that is currently threatening the entire world, it is
occurring as a result of human activity intensifying the greenhouse effect and concentration of
carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, resulting in negative changes to the global climate (Lohmann,
2002). Tourism is particularly vulnerable to the direct and indirect impacts of climate change as
the climate influences the appeal, attractiveness and suitability of a destination (Rutty Scott,
2014). Moore (2010) states that the impact of the climate can be physical, physiological and
psychological, and it also threatens economic, environmental and social sustainability (Moreno
Becken, 2009). Coastal tourism is the largest component of the global tourism industry with
hundreds of millions of people visiting coasts and participating in marine activities (Moreno
Becken, 2009). More than 60% of Europeans choose beach holidays and 80% of US tourism
revenue is generated by beach tourism (IPCC, 2014). Coastal tourism is particularly vulnerable
to the impacts of climate change and faces more serious challenges than inland operations
(Hyman, 2014). The following report will discuss the potential impacts climate change will have

The Importance Of Art Education
What is the difference between a child a child in a lower income school and a higher income
one? The answer is opportunity. Children raised in lower income areas are less likely to have
access to an art education even in its most basic forms at a developmental stage. A young child is
naturally curious and has a drive to explore life and without an art educationa child can lag severely
behind other more fortunate kids who have the opportunity to explore life through colors and
develop basic motor skills from holding a crayon and cutting paper. The definition of an art
education varies based on the access to materials. In one schoolit may be exploring texture and
shape through clay, at another it may be coloring a color sheet with crayons and markers.
At an early age children are predisposed to have creative needs. Their nature is curiosity and an
art education allows them to explore that while developing important life skills motor skills, self
expression, team work. An art education is the ability to guide children through a multitude of
areas of art whether it be coloring and cutting paper to playing with play doh. All of these allow a
child to explore the world they live in through color and shadow and light and dark. An art
education can also involve a more thorough look at the culture behind the piece, who was the
creator, what was their motivation for the piece. Children who have been exposed to the arts are
more likely to identify these things early on due to the

The Gay as a Literary Figure in The Picture of Dorian Gray
This paper shall explore the gay as a literary figure based on Oscar Wilde s The Picture of Dorian
Gray. The aim of the essay is threefold. Firstly, to show how the gay is related to two of the most
potent archetypal images: those of Dionysos and Apollo. Secondly, to demonstrate that the Wildean
gay is profoundly afraid of life, and that his interest in form and aesthetic proportion rests on a
principle of evasion. Thirdly, to contend that the humor in this novel, and by extension also in Wilde
s plays, is a symptom of the author s fascination with an archetypal gay.

It is extraordinary how many of these epithets, such Ovid s puer aeternus, also describe Dorian,
and Dorian, but these parallels are unlikely to have been intended. That Dorian is invested with the
attributes of Dionysos is, however, corroborated in the novel. The morning after he cold bloodedly
turns his back on Sibyl Vane, he checks to see whether Basil s portrait has really altered. It has and
he immediately understands what this signifies for him:
Eternal youth, infinite passion, pleasures subtle and secret, wild joys and wilder sins he was to
have all these things. The portrait was to bear the burden of his shame: that was all. (105)
The young man who realizes this has known only the passions of an adolescent s dreams. In other
words, he believes that, under normal circumstances, such pleasures would stain him, not only
morally, but physically. And so he prays that he may enjoy every pleasure which life can offer
him, and yet remain unmarked by his experience. Such passions as those he wants to enjoy are
associated with Dionysos. This is confirmed toward the end of the novel, when Lord Henry,
following their discussion of Basil s murder, says to Dorian:

Chief Tecumseh And Chief Seattle Speech
Through these neglections and stereotypes, two Chiefs, Seattle and Tecumseh, speak out for their
people by using various forms of rhetoric. In Chief Seattle s speech, he makes a letter to President
Franklin Pierce and any other Americans that play any parts in Parliament. The audience that the
chief is reaching out to may have Manifest Destiny, belief that God approves of the U.S, as well as
the belief that Indians are savages. Chief Seattle explains, however, that the Americans are the true
savages because they can not hear the sound of nature in addition to having no place to hear the
leaves of springs or the rustle of the insect s wings (Seattle). Chief Seattle contrasts how unnatural
the Americans are by saying that the sounds of nature are absent in the American lands. The author
does this to show his intended audience who the true savages are in hopes of showing the
Americans how the Indians view the American beliefs. Chief Tecumseh was another Chief who

he makes a letter to General William Henry Harrison, rather than the President. The audience that
Tecumseh is reaching out to may see the Indians as a threat rather than the Americans as superior.

Summary Of The Scripture Way Of Salvation By John Wesley
John Wesley argued Christian perfection throughout his ministry. His quest was holy living. Wesley
was focused with the life of holiness than with the philosophy concerning holiness and he was
engrossed in the experience than in its principles. When Wesley talked about development in
holiness, and the fundamental goal of being entire sanctification, he was fixed that sanctification
and justification is by faith. In his preaching, The Scripture Way of Salvation , Wesley
expounded the faith by which Christians are perfected is because God is able, he promised in
Scripture, he is willing, and he really does it 1) God has foretold this in Scripture. 2) What God
promises, God is able to do. 3) God is capable and willing to manage it right away. 4) God
actually answers this. Wesley concluded the sermon by exhorting his audience expect it by faith,
expect it as you are, and expect it now!
He communicates justification is by grace through faith as a qualified change in a person s
conversion. Besides, he accentuates the real change that takes place in a person s heart and life
as a soul become new creatures in Christ. I will make you a raw heart and place a young spirit in
you; I will take away from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. (Ezekiel 336:26
NIV) Salvation is not a static act of God is showing towards the past; Wesley understands salvation
as a revitalizing procedure. It begins with justification and new birth and stays as the Christian

Examples Of Duplicity In King Lear
Duplicity is a theme which dominates and defines the play King Lear. The rise of the
Machiavellian Edmund and the fall of the eponymous tragic hero King Lear are both due to one
major aspect of human nature, deception. The tragedy is set in motion by King Lear, who
blinded by hubris, attempts to abdicate and retain power. His folly and hubris, allows him to
deceive himself into believing the best way to divide the kingdom is to command his daughters to
partake in a demeaning love test, where Goneril and Regan feed his ego with more acts of deceit.
Edmund employs the same tactic of deceptionto manipulate his rise to power. He convinces his
blind father Gloucester into banishing his loyal son Edgar. Deception is also used for good in the

He seduces both Goneril and Regan, whom are arch deceivers, causing them to become infatuated
with him. This allows Edmund to rise to power and he manufactures jealousy between them,
becoming a king in the process. Regan declares Witness the world, that I create thee here, my lord
and master . Through manipulating attraction and identifying it as a weakness Edmund has taken
power. The dramatic irony utilised by Shakespeare adds to the atmosphere of this scene, as it was
Regan and Goneril who used false declarations of love to rise to power, and it was this very
strategy is what led to their undoing. Edmund highlights the abhorrent truth that any showing of
trust can be manipulated via deception for personal gain.
Despite the malevolence of deception, Shakespeare reveals how at times it can be used for the
benefit of man. The loyalty of Lear s servant Kent is shown when he adopts the disguise of Cauis
to aid Lear. Having been banished for contradicting Lear s beliefs, in the hope of helping him by
being honest, Kent says Now banished Kent, if thou canst serve where thou dost stand condemned.
The juxtaposition employed by Shakespeare of the words serve and condemned is potent,
highlighting Kent s integrity. He deceives Lear, solely to help him. This is an excellently crafted
example of how deception can be used for

Emperor Penguin Research Paper
Emperor penguins
In one of the most often inhospitable environments, with 98% of the land covered in ice, winds
ranging from 8 kilometres an hour to 64 kilometres an hour, fluctuating climates that potentially
reach incredibly cold temperatures down to 89 degrees Celsius, continuous daylight during
summer, and storms such as blizzards where winds vary up to 200 kilometres per hour, that arrive
rapidly in which potentially cause incredibly contrasting weather patterns within relatively short
distances, lives the Emperor Penguin. Consequently, the Emperor Penguin has many phenomenal
and useful adaptations that ensure the penguin is able to sustain life in such a challenging,
unfavourable environment.

Emperor penguins tend to hunt for quick, midwater squid as well as fish and therefore they
need to be capable of diving to relatively deeper and remain submerged for longer period of time,
in relation to other penguin species. Emperor penguins can dive to depths of approximately 550
565 metres towards the sea floor which is known as the twilight zone where less light is able to
penetrate the surface of the water. Emperor penguins are also able to hold their breath for
approximately 22 27 minutes. Both of these aspects enable the emperor penguin to stay submerged
in the water and locate a source of food that other penguins cannot. Therefore, both swimming and
diving adaptations are vital to the Emperor penguin s ability to sustain life for the adult and newly
born Emperor penguins, as without them it would be much more difficult for them to survive their
surroundings without a food

Parent Child Dynamics Essay
Parent Child Dynamics: Self Perception
Many adolescence face difficulties when entering into new group environments, such as school,
social groups, extracurricular groups, etc. It has been discovered that the family environment has a
great impact on the confidence of an adolescent, the family being the child s first group. It is
difficult to pinpoint one specific trigger causing low self esteem within groups, as hereditary factors
play an important role. It has been found that a discouraging family environment effects one s self
confidence within a larger group. The way in which a child is treated at home reflects the way he
or she sees themselves and their position within other groups. Furthermore, the way in which a
parent views their child is the way in which a child may view themselves when they are among
others in groups outside of the family. These findings support my initial hypothesis that a parent
who views their child negatively will then cause the child to view him or herself in the same
negative way among others in social groups outside of the home.
I would like to research the way in which a parent s view of their child affects the child s self
confidence in other groups. There is much existing research on the topic of parent child dynamics
and their effect on the child s personality development. In Parent Child Socialization, Gary W.
Peterson and Boyd C. Rollins (1987) write: In family interaction, complex sets of meanings are

the world s most powerful nations, the United States had an advantage for Britain was preoccupied
with the war with France.
In 1813, the United States gained control of Lake Erie with their victory at the Battle of Lake Erie
which meant that the Americans controlled the route to Canada. At the Battle of the Thames River,
General Harrison was able to defeat a combined force of British troops and Native Americans,
ending British power in the Northwest and weakening the alliance between Britain and Native
Americans for the leader of the Indians, Tecumseh, had died in battle. In 1814, Britain had won the
war against France and Napoleon Bonaparte was executed meaning that Britain could focus more
on the War of 1812. Their victory at war allowed the British to send better reinforcement to defeat
the Americans who now had their full attention. The British attacked Washington D.C. and set fire
to the White House, along with other government buildings, causing President Madison to be
forced to flee.
In early September 1814, the British sailed up Chesapeake Bay with plans to capture the city of

Wuthering Heights Summary
Set in the wild, rugged country of Yorkshire in northern England during the late eighteenth century,
Emily Bronte s masterpiece novel, Wuthering Heights, clearly illustrates the conflict between the
principles of storm and calm ;. The reoccurring theme of this story is captured by the intense, almost
inhuman love between Catherine and Heathcliff and the numerous barriers preventing their union.
The fascinating tale of Wuthering Heights is told mainly through the eyes of Nelly Dean, the former
servant to the two great estates, to Mr. Lockwood, the current tenant of the Grange.

The next story is Saturday Afternoon by Erskine Caldwell which setting revolves around the
butcher shop where Tom Denny is a hardworking man who sells meat to his dealers and
everyone who buys it likes it. The setting of the story which is a meat block is described to be
dirty, stinky and a lot of greasy and fat flies swarming around the flesh of the bloody meat being
chopped. Moreover, there is this big man named Jim, the friend of Tom who has a plan to kill
Will Maxie, an old, smart and hardworking Negro. Will Maxie is said to be rich and making too
much money because of his hard work in his business of taking grass out of cotton.
Unfortunately, many men poke him with sticks and since he is getting old, he cannot fight back.

The Cause Of Mary Todd s Tragedy
Even though Mary Todd had obtained her goal of becoming First Lady, in 1862 she was again
visited by tragedy. In the midst of the American Civil War during Abraham Lincoln s first term
in office, the beloved son of the President and First Lady, Willie, became ill with typhoid fever.
Disease ran rampant at the time and was often deadly, as it was in Willie s case. The Lincolns
were devastated by the loss and it was uncertain if Mary would recover. Willie s body was
embalmed in the White House s Green Room, which Mary would refuse to enter from that point on.

Street Art And Graffiti
Street art and graffiti has grown increasingly popular worldwide in the last few decades. This is
because street artists are given the opportunity to showcase their ideas and opinions freely, and do
not allow themselves to be limited by regulations of the law or public opinion. Street artists can
express the unpopular opinion without worry that they will be punished for it, as these artists often
work anonymously. According to Michael DeNotto from St. Mary s University of Minnesota, street
artallows the artist to reject established standards, encourage experimentation, and draw from
popular culture and advertising (Street Art and Graffiti, 1). They are given the canvas of public
property such as sidewalks and building walls to create art pieces that can be viewed by potentially
anyone. However, the fact that the audience for street art is so vast can also lead to disagreements
about the content or location of the art, and difference in opinion between the artist and the viewers.
Street art can be used as a method of openly expressing opinions on controversial matters, such as
war, laws, public figures, social issues, and more. In Street Art San Francisco by Annice Jacoby,
there are several art pieces depicting anguish and disapproval. There is a mural of a person crying
over loved ones who have past away, with the words, Those We Love, We Remember. There is
another painted across a fence, depicting the lives affected by the AIDS epidemic in Africa. Across

Compare And Contrast Children And Adults
Most people will say that the best days of your life are going to be during your youth, where you
didn t have to worry about anything and had no responsibilities. When I was a young child, I
remember wanting to be a grown up so bad that I got mad at my parents because they treated me
like a kid. To this day, I still do not understand why kids wantto grow up and be adults so quickly.
Now that I m slowly turning into an adult, I can tell that kids have it way easier than adults do.
Being a child is probably the best thingthat can ever happen to you. When you re a child you have
nothing to worry about. Children have responsibilities that only involve housework or school.
They have to wash dishes, clean their rooms, make the bed, and take out the trash. These are
called chores, and most normal kids hate doing chores. These responsibilities are mainly at
home jobs, and they have more that involve schoolwork. A child is responsible for finishing
class and homework when the teacher asks them to and are also held responsible to be the best
kids they can be at school. A child does not have as many responsibilities as an adult and that s
good because they are still kids and don t need to be stressed out a whole lot. Kids have it easier
because when... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Both adults and kids continue to grow even though they are different ages. Children and adults both
have emotions and also get sick from time to time. Adults and children go through hard times and it
is what makes them who they are. There are many similarities between adults and children but these

King Tutankhamun In The 1920 s
In Ancient Egypt, there was no way to investigate a murder. Even if there was, most records of
King Tut have been erased! Archeologists have been making educated guesses about King
Tutankhamun s death since the 1920 s. One theory is that he was murdered by Aye, his power
hungry chief advisor. This is because King Tut s mummy was very badly injured.
Akhenaten was Tut s father and pharaoh before him. He was nicknamed the Heretic King for
trying to convert Egypt to monotheism. Monotheism is the belief in and worship of a single god.
Akhenaten was assassinated for trying to change Egypt s religion after thousands of years. Aye was
also Akhenaten s chief advisor. Aye enjoyed his job at first but when he heard Akhenaten was going
to convert Egypt to monotheism he only stayed because he thought he would be the next pharaoh.
Aye because very angry when Akhenaten s ten year old son became the pharaoh instead of him. So
angry that he wanted to kill tut.
Aye s plan would take ten years but it would be worth it for complete control over one of the most
powerful civilizations in the world. First he waited until the boy king was no longer a boy and was
old enough to fight in a war. By then, King Tut had married his half sister, (and Aye s
granddaughter,) Ankhesenamun. Without anyone knowing, Aye wrote a letter to the king of the

Aye did not deserve to be a part of Egyptian history and had their names erased and his put in their

First Past The Post-Voting System
This essay explains four potential concerns about the American electoral system. First, this essay
provides a summary of our current voting system. Next, this essay explains four problems with First
Past the Post Voting System. Finally, this essay explains the most democracy distorting concern, the
electoral college.
Summary of the Current VotingSystem: First Past the Post
The current voting system that is used in America, is the First Past the Post Voting (FPTP) System.
There are two basic rules that ensure a winner in this voting system. This first rule is that there is
only one vote per citizen and the second rule is that who ever gets the most votes during the election
, wins or is elected president.
Concern One: Minority Rules The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Concern Three: Gerrymandering The third concern with the FPTP Voting System is that creates
gerrymandering. Gerrymandering is the redrawing of electoral boundaries in order to increase a
candidate s chance of winning an election (The Problems with FPTP Voting Explained Video).
When the population has moved and grown, to better represent the largest population, there is a
redrawing of electoral boundaries. However, for a price one can turn a land slide victory by the
way boundaries are set up (Gerrymandering Explained Video). By packing a majority of one group
together, and spreading the rest out, it guarantees a win for one party.
Concern Four: The Spoiler Effect The fourth concern with FPTP Voting is the Spoiler Effect .
After a candidate has been in office for multiple years, it is difficult for other candidates to enter
the race. The better a third party candidate does, the more it hurts its own voters by guaranteeing
loss for the party they most agree with and a win for the party they most disagree with (The
Problems with First Past the Post Voting Explained Video). The First Past the Post Voting (FPTP)
System is not susceptible to new candidates (The Problems with FPTP Voting Explained

The Philosopher Who Was An Ancient Greek Philosopher Essay
Today I chose to talk about the philosopher Plato who was an Ancient Greek philosopher who
founded the Academy and is also one of the authors of philosophical works of a lot of influential
works in Western civilization. Plato was born around the times of Circa in 428 B.C.E. and because
of the lack of many sources from his time period, unfortunately, much of Platos work in his life has
been reconstructed by scholars throughout his writings which were discovered and analyzed by
very intelligent historians. Both of his biological parents came from the Greek aristocracy. His
father named Ariston was a descendent from the kings of Athens and Messenia. On the other
hand, was his mother named Perictione, who is said to be related to the 6th century B.C.E. the
Greek statesman solon.Even though some scholars tend to believe that Plato was named by his
grandfather whose name was Aristotle s who essentially helped Plato with his traditional name.
Plato was also claimed to be the oldest son in his family. Many historians say also that Plato was
his nickname and that it referred to be because of his broad physical physique. Although, there is
not much evidence of that they say that because of these young boys gave him the name Plato
before Aristotle s was even born. Plato was also assumed to be taught by some of the Athens s most
intelligent educators around that time. As well, the curriculum would have been from the doctrines
of Cratylus and Pythagoras as well as Pamenides. This

Educational Philosophies Influence Curriculum From The...
Abstract
Educational philosophies influence curriculum from the establishment of the American school
systems. The five major philosophies that have influence American education are: 1) Idealism, 2)
Essentialism, 3) Perennialism, 4) Progressivism, and 5) Experimentalism. Idealism, Essentialism,
and Perennialism are all teacher based philosophies putting the teacher at the core of the educational
experience, with students being passive members of the classroom. In contrast, Progressivism and
Experimentalism are student centered philosophies that focus on the child and their contribution
and participation in the formation of classroom experiences, using teachers as guides to help
students in their educational development. Although the philosophies differ, many of them define
curriculum as a encompassing unit of goals, methods, materials and assessment.
Introduction
Since the establishment of America s first schools, the American people have disagreed not only
about what the purpose of school is, but also about what schools should teach. Initially schools
were supposed to prepare men to vote intelligently and prepare women to train their sons properly.
Moral training based on the Protestant Bible would produce virtuous, well behaved citizens [who
knew not only] the three R s but [also] the general principles of law, commerce, money, and
government (Kaestle, 1983, p. 5). During the 1780 s educational theorists began calling for reform
and in 1785 Massachusetts law

The 8th amendment says that excessive bail shall not be required, or excessive fines, or cruel
and unusual punishment. The commission of human rights is a group of people putting
guidelines for the death penalty so it really isn?t cruel and unusual punishment. They have five
main guidelines, here they are. The commission of human rights urges states to restrict the
number of death penalties happening per year. Every year there should be a decreasing amount
of executions. This would lead to the abolishing of the death penalty. They urge all states that
still hold the death penalty not to execute a person as long as any related legal procedure, at
international or national level. Lastly they try not to allow the executions of the mentally ill to
happen (Richard International 3). There are five ways to execute a person. The five are: lethal
gas, lethal injection, electrocution, hanging, and firing squad. The most commonly used are lethal
injection and electrocution. Lethal injection is when the people inject a shot into both of your
arms. It takes about three minutes until the acid kills you. Firing squad is when a group of
people has guns and the shoot at the murderers chest. The electric chair is when the chair gives
off 2300 volts for about ten seconds. Then there is a low voltage of 1000, which goes on for about
twenty seconds. But the murderer is usually dead by the first ten seconds. Lethal Gas is now only

Progressive Rock 1970s
Progressive rock of the 1970s and the paradox of popular serious art
Progressive rock of the 1970s represents a unique moment in the modern music and culture
history; moment which introduced an atypical association of the highly sophisticated and
complicated means of expression, derived mainly from the area of so called serious art, with the
wide popularity, bordering almost with fashion. American Marxist philosopher and social theorist
Bill Martin aptly named this remarkable phenomenon of progressive rock, which was based on the
British rock experimentalism of the second half of the sixties and which became a global artistic
trend in the following decade, using the paradoxical term popular avant garde .
The proposed conference contribution will present the issue of progressive rock genre in a
synthetic manner and with regard to the mentioned key feature of the juxtaposition of the serious
and popular or high and low art. Apart from the aesthetic and formal aspects, the socio cultural and
socio functional issues will be discussed as well. Particular attention will be paid to the parallels

concrete product of the particular social and cultural circumstances. In connection with analytical
reflection of progressive rock the paper will necessarily also touch on the issue of modernist and
postmodernist trends in music and the arts in

  • 2. The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas Rhetorical Analysis In The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas, the author Le Guin establishes the idea that one can not enjoy happiness that results from the immoral, discriminatory victimization of someone else. Upon first look, the city of Omelas seems like a fairy tale utopia where everyone is happy, yet underneath this veil of splendor, there is a child that is neglected and abused to the point of where some people are so sickened that they must leave Omelas. All of Omelas s glamour and joy depends solely on the suffering of this child, and if the child were to be rescued, all goodness in Omelas would be destroyed. The people of Omelas know that theirs is no vapid irresponsible happiness. They know that they, like the child, are not free (47). The passage reveals that the people fully understand the terms of the child s misery.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore, their happiness is not even true happiness because it is constantly shadowed by the knowledge of the child s suffering, and yet paradoxically, they feel morally obligated to be happy for the sake of the child. In a sense, they are so bound to the child that they do not have any more freedom than the child itself. In contrast, there are also people who are so disturbed by this dark secret of the child that they leave Omelas...toward [a] place...that [possibly] does not exist. But they seem to know where they are going (47). To leave Omelas for the unknown would need considerable courage, but they know that they will never be truly happy staying in Omelas. Just like how the people of Omelas know that the joy built upon successful slaughter is not the right kind of joy, those who leave understand that happiness at the expense of a scapegoat, such as the child, is also not the right kind of joy ... Bringing Joy At The Poverty Bringing Joy to People in Poverty Giving back to those who are less fortunate is something that should be obliged as being an individual who is a part of the community. For some people, their necessities are evident. When we see someone without a proper backpack or needed school supplies, it could be that their family does not have the money to get them these things. When people go to a clothes closet, it s because that they are in need of clothes and can t afford it. When children who didn t received a gift for Christmas, it s because their parents couldn t afford it due to their low income. Additionally, being given something can make individuals feel like a worthy part of the community. Indeed, I hope to gain by completing this project is that the gratification of assisting individuals such as children to bring joy into their lives with donations. Furthermore, I hope to gain by completing this project is that to implement ways to get involved and help the community. The issue we have chosen to address with the service project is that many innocent people are living in poverty and it isn t right to live that way due to their low income, which leads to decreasing the individual s happiness and reduce their ability to thrive and succeed. By this issue, there are people affected because many families can t supply the right items or supplies for themselves due to low income. According to the United States Census Bureau, in 2014, about 46.7 million people are suffering from this issue alone in the United States. The number of people living in poverty is slightly rising each year. Yet, organizations such as the Family GivingTree and the Milpitas Food Pantry exist to address the issue we picked. The plan we had created as a group has four parts to it. First, we needed to contact the organization about where to deliver the donations, since the Family Giving Tree had a warehouse and a office located at different places and we weren t sure where to deliver the donations. • 4. The Media and Eating Disorders Essay example The Media and Eating Disorders It is funny how so many girls and women today are led to believe that the only way to feel attractive and be beautiful is to have their bodies consist of nothing but skin and bones. Women are dieting more today then they have ever been before. They are striving for an unattainable body figure that is portrayed by the media as being the ideal standard for today s women. It gets worse. Not only are women dieting unlike ever before, but they will ruthlessly harm their bodies in order to achieve these inaccessible standards. This ruthless harm that haunts so many women today just so happens to be what we call eating disorders. Anorexia and bulimia are the primary diseases that go in the category of eating ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There is something obviously wrong with these statistics. Women who subject themselves to these circumstances are fighting against their own body make ups in order to fulfill the standards put out by the media. In order to change these staggering statistics in the future, we must examine what the media does to make girls and women obtain eating disorders. When researchers asked one hundred eighteen female, college aged students to look at twenty pictures in ads from women s magazines, they felt a sudden change in mood after the pictures were observed. There was notable depression in the women, a depression that has seemed to hit many women after leafing through women s magazines (Key and Lindgren 11). This depression is due to the fact there are so many negative messages being conveyed in advertisements that are published in women s magazines. But who can blame the women for their depression anyway? When the majority of the ads in women s magazines show super skinny models advertising nice clothes, makeup, jewelry, etc., one might find themselves to be a little down. Skinny models portray their figures to be the cultural norm in Western society today. How often does one find a model in a woman s magazine that is over a size six that is not shown advertising plus size merchandise? The answer is not very often, or sometimes never at all. If women do not see their body type being depicted in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He is one of those characters that if you tell them they can t do something, they go out or their way to prove you wrong or if you challenge them they go above and beyond, crossing all limits to win the bet. • 8. Duck Creek Watershed Essay Background (1 В¶): What is the Duck Creek Watershed? What problems is it facing? What is being done so far to remedy these problems? Who is working on this problem? The Duck Creek watershed in Scott County, IA is currently facing high levels of Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria contamination. This pollution has put the watershed on the impaired waters list for the state of Iowa. The impaired waters list is a comprehensive list of every waterway in a state that has a contamination problem according to EPA regulations (insert source for impaired waters explanation EPA regulations). Much of the pollution that can be found in the Duck Creek watershed is coming from nonpoint source (NPS) pollution. Nonpoint source pollution significantly contributes to the deterioration of water quality due to the difficulty in identifying, assessing and controlling the sources of this type of pollution (citation Wang). This pollution is caused by runoff moving over the land. It picks up and carries away natural and human made pollutants, finally depositing them into lakes, streams, rivers, wetlands and even our underground sources of drinking water (citation SCSWCD). Examples of nonpoint sources in the watershed could include failing septic systems, livestock access to streams, pastures full of manure, fertilizers applied to crops, miscellaneous urban sources such as gasoline or oil, pet waste, and wildlife (citation SCSWCD). Another source of NPS pollution is that conventional urban storm ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. The Importance Of Lying From early childhood, one is typically taught that lying is something that must never be done. Although it is customarily frowned upon, it is a bad habit that many people acquire. No matter one s age, gender, or even religion, many people continue with this bad habit. Personally, I do not believe it is possible for someone to live a life without having lied at least a few times. Yes, lying is seen as bad, but I believe it mainly depends on the circumstances. Lying is necessary sometimes, because it can help with feelings, getting one out of trouble, or even bettering a situation. It is very common for people to experience a break up; whether it is with a friend or a significant other, it happens a lot. Ending a relationship is never easy, especially when you are the one being left. Quite a few people turn to lying when it comes to situations like these. I myself have experienced a bad break up, and lies were certainly told. Back then of course, I did not see it as a positive thing, but looking back I understand why lies had to be told. When it comes to a situation like breaking up, telling a lieor two could actually help with the feelings involved. When you lie, you do not necessarily have to tell the person something negative. This is why I do not consider it lying, but more of altering the truth. By altering the truth, you hurt the other person s feelings less, which will help with the heeling process; making the little lies worth telling in the long run. Based off the ... • 10. The South Was Prepared For A Major War By the 1860s, neither the North nor the South was prepared for a major war. However, while the north at least had a functioning government in place, more resources to begin with, and a more effective leader, the South had virtually nothing in comparison. They lacked infrastructure and population to serve in the military, their finances were in shambles, and they had a weak leader. These factors played a great impact in determining the outcome of the war. Having sufficient resources is imperative to success during a time of war. Whether it is monetary or material, it lays the foundation for the other factors of success to come together and ultimately win the war. In the south, however, they lacked many of these vital resources needed... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This allowed their soldiers to be more well equipped at all times versus the southern soldiers who were sporadically armed and whose basic necessities sometimes weren t met. Along with material resources, the North s population was much greater than that of the South s. 2.1 million people fought for the North, which represented nearly half of the eligible population, whereas only 900,000 people fought for the South, which made up 90 percent of its eligible population. The North also had an inflow of Irish and German immigrants who enlisted to fight in place of some native Northerners. Many ex slaves from the South also fought for the Union, again increasing the North s numbers. Another hindering resource for the Confederacy was their financial situation. Their unstable finances turned out to set them back more than their lack of industrial capacity. Their economy relied on cotton exports, however a Union blockade made this revenue stream almost nonexistent. To make up for this loss in revenue, the government tried to raise taxes, but southerners resisted taxation (Goldfield, The American Journey, 408). The government then sold bonds, but as the Confederacy lost money, bond sales drastically decreased. With few options left, the Confederate government started printing money to finance the rest of the war. This ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Gaius Julius Caesar Analysis The Things Which are Caesar s Gaius Julius Caesar was a military commander, a Roman consul, and Dictator of Ancient Rome. His military victories, cult of personality, and influence on Roman life brought him respect in Rome. Cicero, an orator of the era, confirmed Cesar s accounts of his role during the civil war. In representing his own role in the Roman Civil War, Julius Caesarsketches a picture of his influence on his contemporaries that rings true when compared to Cicero s documentation of the same period. Though Caesar praises himself while Cicero scorns him, a consistent picture of Caesar s influence emerges from a close reading of the two authors: he instilled fear in the hearts of Roman Senators and inspired loyalty in Roman Citizens. In Caesar s account in The Civil War, he presents the Roman Senators persecuting him as unreasonable and himself as justified, a contrast to Cicero s personal criticisms of the commander. Caesar states that the Senate is punishing him for his moderate demands (pg. 37). Caesar accounts that the Roman Senate refuses to dismantle Pompey s army, in addition, he states that the Roman Senate is using unnecessary measures against him, as he recounts, ...harsh measures were advocated; and the more savage and vindictive the speaker, the more he was applauded by Caesar s enemies (pg.36 40). The Tuskegee Untreated Syphilis Experiment In 1946 to 1948 the United States, with the help of cooperating Guatemalan health ministries and officials, led a horrible experiment on innocent people infecting them with syphilis to see how effective peninsilyn would be in treating the disease. Doctors had infected soldiers, prostitutes, mental patients and prisoners without their knowledge or consent, and treated most but not all with antibiotics, primarily penicillin. About 76 percent of the nearly 1500 subjects infected with the disease were given adequate treatment and about one quarter of the test subjects had documents of completing the treatment process. The reality of that ongoing debate is that this country, and the State of California in particular, was founded by immigrants fleeing an oppressive government, yet this same country and state now oppress immigrants fleeing from similar situations trying to reestablish new lives within its borders. Advantages and Disadvantages of International Trade Author s Name Instructor s Name Advantages and Disadvantages of International Trade Introduction The exchange of goods and services among countries is known as international trade. It is the foundation of a global economy, where prices, supply and demand factors affect and are affected by events all around the world. Such trade provides an opportunity for countries to be exposed to products unavailable domestically and to provide their local products to foreign markets (Heakal, 2015). The following sections will discuss the benefits and drawbacks of international trade. Advantages of International Trade Given that the world is interdependent, economic progress of a country depends upon its relations with other nations (Shukla, 2009). Through strong international trade, economies have flourished and gained power to control and steer the global economy (Economy Watch, 2010). Over the years, it has offered a wide range of benefits to various economies across the globe. The rising importance of international trade has been fueled by contemporary production techniques, innovative transportation systems, transnational organizations, outsourcing activities and expeditious industrialization (Economy Watch, 2010). ... Overdependence on affluent economies can be risky as they can impose their political agendas on weaker economies in order to exploit them (Shukla, 2009). We see this strongly in the 1920 s with things like women s rights and other points of views being viewed as dangerous or inappropriate. Women in more urban areas in the 1920 s were becoming more open and independant and while they accepted this, many people in rural areas saw this as inappropriate. We even see this in the Sacco and Vanzettitrial. Sacco and Vanzetti were anarchists, and just for believing in something different than everyone else they were put to death for something they may or may have not done. Eventually, however, they managed to rise above this ancient fierceness to become the nineteen elder gods and goddesses the Greeks knew as The Titans, who ruled the earth in a primordial era before the Olympian gods overthrew them. The ancient Greeks of the first millennium before the Christian era believed that the ruler of the Titans was Cronus, who was rebelled against and ultimately dethroned by his own son Zeus. The ancient Greeks firmly believed in the divinity and power of the Titans and Olympians. They worshipped these gods and goddesses, feared them, implored them for help, and considered them responsible for everything that happened on earth. Today, most of the people who are interested in Greek mythology and in the gods and goddesses of Olympus consider their interest purely scholarly. Other people who study Greek mythology do so for simple entertainment, or to satisfy their curiosity about the Olympian gods and goddesses, who were certainly colorful, vibrant, and interesting figures. The relationships of the gods and goddesses with one another, and their love affairs, disputes, triumphs, and tragedies are fascinating to some of us today, for they were all related, and always seemed to be intent upon some mischief or grand scheme that involved love, betrayal, or intrigue. In fact, life on Mount Olympus reminds many modern students of Greek mythology as one big soap opera, for despite their perceived divinity by the ancient Greeks, the gods and goddesses acted in very human ways, and displayed human emotions, flaws, and weaknesses. These characteristics are what scholars of today find so interesting about the Titans and Olympians, for the portraits of the gods and goddesses of ancient Greece are in fact portraits of the ancient Greeks themselves. That attention has changed from horror, to disgust, to appreciation in the past 200 years but the culture of drag queens has always stayed true to being a community for men who do not fit into the mold of what is deemed normal. It has been a safe haven and a family for those who do not have anywhere else. Through this culture we see strength, art and acceptance stemming from adversity. Some key aspects of this culture, that help us understand it, are the role drag queens play in the LGBTQ community, the language they use, their history, the reason why gay men are attracted to this community and what they gain from it. At its core, the culture of drag queens, as it is today, is centred around the performative act of their shows. Their shows include men, usually gay, impersonating woman while lip synching and dancing . Confusion may arise over the difference between crossdressing, transvestites and drag queens. The important separation, as Jessica StrГјbel Scheiner describes, is that, The drag queen is a self identified man who has no desire to live as a woman, nor become a woman , she explains that all drag queens share, unquestionably strong emphasis on mocking hyperfemininity and ridiculing female gender stereotypes . As it can be seen, at the surface of the modified electrode, oxidations of Dibucaine and Naphazoline are irreversible processes. These results indicate that the electron transfer rate is quite slow. This proclamation, issued in September 1862 and enacted at the start of 1863, freed all slaves in rebelling states in the Confederacy and had a dramatic impact on the outcome of the Civil War. However, even though Lincoln was morally against the concept of slavery, he had previously stated that he had no intention of abolishing it. Why did he explicitly violate his own word? Multiple factors played a part in Lincoln s decision to emancipate the slaves. Firstly, as the conflict progressed from a minor rebellion to a full blown civil war, Lincoln felt that the Emancipation Proclamationwould strengthen the Union s... As the war progressed, however, it became clear that the war was not just a short rebellion and that there was no hope of keeping the country from outright Civil War. At that point, it was clear that the war was built on the issue of slavery, and Lincoln saw that by clarifying the Union s position on slavery, he would strengthen their position in the war. Although Lincoln might not have initially seen the Civil War as war about slavery, but the slaves in the South disagreed they immediately took the war as an opportunity to gain freedom. Another reason Lincoln issued the Emancipation proclamation was that by 1862, the emancipation of the slaves would only benefit the Union while hurting the Confederacy. Upon the start of the fighting, numerous slaves escaped to Union lines, assuming that the army would give them protection. This presented a dilemma for the Union. The Fugitive Slave Act was still in place, which meant that any general that encountered an escaped slave should have return them to their masters. Although some generals did this, many others welcomed slaves into their armies, calling them contrabands of war . Lincoln, who was sure that these defiant actions would further enrage the Confederacy yet had no intention of returning the slaves to their masters, presented a number of alternative plans for the slaves, including colonization (freed slaves would be delivered to Central ... It introduces the notion of an optimal patent one where the patent life and the licensing royalty rate are both determined optimally. Under certain simplifying assumptions it is shown that the optimal patentwill have an indefinite life, for both process and product innovations. Some preliminary calculations suggest that the use of compulsory licensing may lead to substantial welfare improvements, even if the patent life is left unchanged at 17 years. The changes made in 1999, 2002 and 2005 have been ostensibly to comply with its WTO ob ligations on intellectual property. Moore (2010) states that the impact of the climate can be physical, physiological and psychological, and it also threatens economic, environmental and social sustainability (Moreno Becken, 2009). Coastal tourism is the largest component of the global tourism industry with hundreds of millions of people visiting coasts and participating in marine activities (Moreno Becken, 2009). More than 60% of Europeans choose beach holidays and 80% of US tourism revenue is generated by beach tourism (IPCC, 2014). Coastal tourism is particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and faces more serious challenges than inland operations (Hyman, 2014). The following report will discuss the potential impacts climate change will have on beach resorts; including extreme weather and global temperature rise, sea level rise and coastal erosion, coral bleaching, an increase in natural disasters AND MORE. • 33. The Importance Of Art Education What is the difference between a child a child in a lower income school and a higher income one? The answer is opportunity. Children raised in lower income areas are less likely to have access to an art education even in its most basic forms at a developmental stage. A young child is naturally curious and has a drive to explore life and without an art educationa child can lag severely behind other more fortunate kids who have the opportunity to explore life through colors and develop basic motor skills from holding a crayon and cutting paper. The definition of an art education varies based on the access to materials. In one schoolit may be exploring texture and shape through clay, at another it may be coloring a color sheet with crayons and markers. At an early age children are predisposed to have creative needs. Their nature is curiosity and an art education allows them to explore that while developing important life skills motor skills, self expression, team work. An art education is the ability to guide children through a multitude of areas of art whether it be coloring and cutting paper to playing with play doh. All of these allow a child to explore the world they live in through color and shadow and light and dark. An art education can also involve a more thorough look at the culture behind the piece, who was the creator, what was their motivation for the piece. Children who have been exposed to the arts are more likely to identify these things early on due to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Gay as a Literary Figure in The Picture of Dorian Gray This paper shall explore the gay as a literary figure based on Oscar Wilde s The Picture of Dorian Gray. The aim of the essay is threefold. Firstly, to show how the gay is related to two of the most potent archetypal images: those of Dionysos and Apollo. Secondly, to demonstrate that the Wildean gay is profoundly afraid of life, and that his interest in form and aesthetic proportion rests on a principle of evasion. Thirdly, to contend that the humor in this novel, and by extension also in Wilde s plays, is a symptom of the author s fascination with an archetypal gay. It is extraordinary how many of these epithets, such Ovid s puer aeternus, also describe Dorian, and Dorian, but these parallels are unlikely to have been intended. That Dorian is invested with the attributes of Dionysos is, however, corroborated in the novel. The morning after he cold bloodedly turns his back on Sibyl Vane, he checks to see whether Basil s portrait has really altered. It has and he immediately understands what this signifies for him: Eternal youth, infinite passion, pleasures subtle and secret, wild joys and wilder sins he was to have all these things. The portrait was to bear the burden of his shame: that was all. (105) The young man who realizes this has known only the passions of an adolescent s dreams. In other words, he believes that, under normal circumstances, such pleasures would stain him, not only morally, but physically. And so he prays that he may enjoy every pleasure which life can offer him, and yet remain unmarked by his experience. Such passions as those he wants to enjoy are associated with Dionysos. In Chief Seattle s speech, he makes a letter to President Franklin Pierce and any other Americans that play any parts in Parliament. The audience that the chief is reaching out to may have Manifest Destiny, belief that God approves of the U.S, as well as the belief that Indians are savages. Chief Seattle explains, however, that the Americans are the true savages because they can not hear the sound of nature in addition to having no place to hear the leaves of springs or the rustle of the insect s wings (Seattle). Chief Seattle contrasts how unnatural the Americans are by saying that the sounds of nature are absent in the American lands. The author does this to show his intended audience who the true savages are in hopes of showing the Americans how the Indians view the American beliefs. Chief Tecumseh was another Chief who spoke out for his people, but used different tactics than Chief Seattle. In chief Tecumseh s speech, he makes a letter to General William Henry Harrison, rather than the President. The audience that Tecumseh is reaching out to may see the Indians as a threat rather than the Americans as superior. • 38. Summary Of The Scripture Way Of Salvation By John Wesley John Wesley argued Christian perfection throughout his ministry. His quest was holy living. Wesley was focused with the life of holiness than with the philosophy concerning holiness and he was engrossed in the experience than in its principles. When Wesley talked about development in holiness, and the fundamental goal of being entire sanctification, he was fixed that sanctification and justification is by faith. In his preaching, The Scripture Way of Salvation , Wesley expounded the faith by which Christians are perfected is because God is able, he promised in Scripture, he is willing, and he really does it 1) God has foretold this in Scripture. 2) What God promises, God is able to do. 3) God is capable and willing to manage it right away. 4) God actually answers this. Wesley concluded the sermon by exhorting his audience expect it by faith, expect it as you are, and expect it now! He communicates justification is by grace through faith as a qualified change in a person s conversion. • 39. Examples Of Duplicity In King Lear Duplicity is a theme which dominates and defines the play King Lear. The rise of the Machiavellian Edmund and the fall of the eponymous tragic hero King Lear are both due to one major aspect of human nature, deception. The tragedy is set in motion by King Lear, who blinded by hubris, attempts to abdicate and retain power. His folly and hubris, allows him to deceive himself into believing the best way to divide the kingdom is to command his daughters to partake in a demeaning love test, where Goneril and Regan feed his ego with more acts of deceit. Through manipulating attraction and identifying it as a weakness Edmund has taken power. The dramatic irony utilised by Shakespeare adds to the atmosphere of this scene, as it was Regan and Goneril who used false declarations of love to rise to power, and it was this very strategy is what led to their undoing. Edmund highlights the abhorrent truth that any showing of trust can be manipulated via deception for personal gain. Despite the malevolence of deception, Shakespeare reveals how at times it can be used for the benefit of man. The loyalty of Lear s servant Kent is shown when he adopts the disguise of Cauis to aid Lear. Having been banished for contradicting Lear s beliefs, in the hope of helping him by being honest, Kent says Now banished Kent, if thou canst serve where thou dost stand condemned. Parent Child Dynamics Essay Parent Child Dynamics: Self Perception Many adolescence face difficulties when entering into new group environments, such as school, social groups, extracurricular groups, etc. It has been discovered that the family environment has a great impact on the confidence of an adolescent, the family being the child s first group. It is difficult to pinpoint one specific trigger causing low self esteem within groups, as hereditary factors play an important role. It has been found that a discouraging family environment effects one s self confidence within a larger group. The way in which a child is treated at home reflects the way he or she sees themselves and their position within other groups. Furthermore, the way in which a parent views their child is the way in which a child may view themselves when they are among others in groups outside of the family. This is because King Tut s mummy was very badly injured. Akhenaten was Tut s father and pharaoh before him. He was nicknamed the Heretic King for trying to convert Egypt to monotheism. Monotheism is the belief in and worship of a single god. Akhenaten was assassinated for trying to change Egypt s religion after thousands of years. Aye was also Akhenaten s chief advisor. The five major philosophies that have influence American education are: 1) Idealism, 2) Essentialism, 3) Perennialism, 4) Progressivism, and 5) Experimentalism. Idealism, Essentialism, and Perennialism are all teacher based philosophies putting the teacher at the core of the educational experience, with students being passive members of the classroom. In contrast, Progressivism and Experimentalism are student centered philosophies that focus on the child and their contribution and participation in the formation of classroom experiences, using teachers as guides to help students in their educational development. Although the philosophies differ, many of them define curriculum as a encompassing unit of goals, methods, materials and assessment.
