Introduction
The term hate crime became part of the American lexicon in 1985 when it was coined by United
States Representatives John Conyers and Mario Biaggi. Although the term hate crime and societal
interest in it are relatively recent developments, hate crime has deep historical roots. Throughout
U.S. history, a significant proportion of all murders, assaults, and acts of vandalism and desecration
have been fueled by hatred. As Native Americans have been described as the first hatecrime victims,
hate crimes have existed since the United States' inception. Since then, members of all immigrant
groups have been subjected to discrimination, harassment, and violence.

In addition, these laws are important in order to deter potential hate crime offenders who
intentionally target members of subordinate groups. Hate crime laws are also symbolic and promote
social cohesion by officially stating that victimization of people who are "different" is not accepted
or tolerated in a modern society.
There have also been arguments against the formation of hate crime laws. Not all believe that hate
crimes have been a significant problem in society; rather, some see it as a media–exaggerated
issue–a product of a society that is highly sensitive to prejudice and discrimination. Thus, a special
set of criminal laws that include hate is not warranted, and the generic criminal laws will suffice.
Those who oppose hate crime laws also argue that attempting to determine motivation for an already
criminal act is difficult and may pose moral problems in that the offender is being punished for a
criminal act and for his or her motivation. It has also been argued that hate crime laws do not deter
people from engaging in these crimes. Others argue that the disagreement over which subordinate
groups to include in the hate crime laws actually causes added discrimination and marginalization.
Critics state that what these laws effectively are saying is that one group is more worthy of
protection and care than another. Critics also wonder why anger/hate is more punishable than other

views of LGBT people are inflicting pain onto those they deem sinful. According to the FBI, sexual
orientation motivated nearly 18% of all hate crimes in 2016. Though the number may not seem
excessive, sexuality is currently the third leading incentive for hate crimes and rising (FBI). For
instance, in 2016, the New York Times reported Omar Mateen, an American who pledged allegiance

Another area that demands acceptance towards sexual orientation is by parents. The average
American has heard about an instance where someone "came out of the closet." Although, most
people don't think about what happens after they tell their parents the truth about their sexuality. For
millions of teens across America, their situation results in either running away or being kicked out.
According to the TrueColorsFund website, homelessness is experienced by over 1.5 million youth a
year, and up to 40% are LGBT. Considering the LGBT community is far smaller than 40% of the
entire youth population, a problem is obviously occurring. To extend, the leading cause of
homelessness is family disputes over the child's sexuality (Durso and Gates 4). When a child tells
their parents, a negative reaction is expected. In many cases, though, the parents overreact and kick
them out because they think abandonment will change their mind and the child will come crawling
back. Not accepting their child surrenders them to possibly years on the streets, exposing them to
drugs, rape, and prostitution. When their parent's rejection combines with the common mental health

hate crime. These wrongdoings often include violence and are one of the FBI's Civil Rights

each other. There are many different targets of hate crimes and each perpetrator may have many
different reasons which they feel justifies their commission of the crime. However in all honesty,
there are not a million reasons why hate crimes are committed; there are neither thousands nor
