"Black English" Another Way to Classify Humans
"To open your mouth В… You have confessed your parents, your youth, your school, your salary,
your self–esteem, and alas, your future ". After reading the two essays, "From Outside, In" by
Barbara Mellix and "If Black English Isn't a Language Then Tell Me, What Is?" by James Balwin,
I came to realize a few things one of them being that the way we speak, is a means of identifying
somebody's culture and background. Much in how a license can tell a person your name, age, were
you live etc. a person can tell your race, what kind of education you have and were you are going in
life just by hearing you talk.
When slavery began, a time in human history that I assume many people would rather...show more

She would never make me feel "shame" or any less because I was being myself. It must have been
hard on Mellix to be told that your language and the language of your forefathers was not "proper"
by you own mother.
I believe that learning a language is fine for the right reasons. Expanding your knowledge or
going to a different country, these are both legitimate reasons to learn a language. Learning a
language because you will be ridiculed is not a proper reason. As Fanon stated in Mellix's essay
to speak is, "В…above all to assume a culture, to support the weight of a civilization2". So what
Fanon suggest is that when you take on a language it is to become part of the culture almost to
change your identity, and I agree with that. I find when I meet somebody who can speak multiple
languages I look at them with more respect than I would if they only spoke one. Not to say I
would look down on a person who only speaks one language, I just find it admirable for somebody
who would take the time to learn a new language.
Throughout this essay you may have noticed quotations around the terms "black English" and
"standard English". This is because I find it ridiculous to split English into two categories. When an
Australian speaks and we find it hard to understand them we don't call it "aussie English", or when a
person from England comes and we find their English hard to understand we don't call there
language "brit English". You see

Before entering English 1301, I had my doubts about what this class was going to consist of.
Considering this is a college level English class, and a subject I struggled in, my worries were not at
ease. Throughout the year, my understanding and comprehension of the writing process, as well as
how to write different varieties of writing, have strengthened. After partaking in this course, I am
confident I have met the student learning outcomes. After completing my first college level English
class, I would be expected to meet four student learning outcomes. One of those being I could use
rhetorical devices to strengthen my essays. Coming into this course, I did not have a grasp over this
subject and knew it was something I could improve on....show more content...
I have improved my grammar through feedback from my instructor, and workshops I participated in.
There is a significant difference between my writing conventions from the beginning of the year to
my present writing conventions. In my second essay, The Drastic Evolution of Teen Life, I have
noticed many writing convention errors. In this essay I said, "Also with the lack of technology, they
were influenced to be more adventurous and get out of the house and explore things on their own"
(The Drastic Evolution of Teen Life) This sentence is a prime example of faulty sentence structure; it
lacks punctuation in the right places. My third essay, Euthanasia: Condemned by Doctors, has less
errors and shows improvement on these writing conventions. Improvement can be seen in the
sentence, " Euthanasia should not be legal because it is not morally correct, undermines medical
research, and denies patients the final stage of growth"(Euthanasia: Condemned by Doctors). This
shows development on sentence structure, punctuation, and helps gives my essay a polished look.
Without this, errors I may have previously made would be even more

Learning English as a Second Language Essay
English is an international language which is used officially all around the world. Anybody who
wants to make connections with the world we live in should learn English. I had English language
classes in my secondary and high school years. I also took some private English learning courses
throughout summers in my country, Turkey. However, I could not improve my English effectively
as all Turkish students in Turkey. I fully agree that English will be learned most efficiently in the
boundaries of an English–speaking country not in the home country because of some cases.
Therefore, I came here, USA, to learn English better after graduation from my university. First,
English is dealt with all the time while staying in an English–speaking...show more content...
Neither was I able to get their points, nor could they understand me. The reasons were that my
Turkish English teachers are not the experts in pronunciation and there is no class focusing on
speaking at state schools in Turkey. An experiment was performed by Major et al. about speaking
and listening problems for international people. Four groups of one hundred listeners, whose native
languages were Chinese, Spanish, Japanese, and American English, heard brief lectures presented in
English by speakers with different native languages and answered questions based on the lectures.
The results indicated that both native and nonnative listeners scored significantly lower on
listening comprehension tests when they listened to nonnative speakers of English, and Chinese
group scored significantly lower when listening to speakers who shared their native language.
Only Spanish group did well when they listened to their native speaker (174). This experiment
showed that learning English from a nonnative speaker may cause troubles in both listening and
speaking parts of English. Additionally, I lacked of ability on word choice for the first couple of
months in the USA. For example, I was using adjective "too" for positive circumstances " instead of
"very" or "so", and I used to say "according to me" instead of "in my

My Struggles with English Composition Essay
My Struggles with English Composition
"...As for all the seniors, I want you to challenge yourselves this year and don't think you're going to
cruise through to graduation."–Mrs. Smith, County High School. Although some seniors in high
school refuse to take a hard schedule, I decided to take a challenging composition course my last
year of high school and learned more than ever before from it. My teacher, Mr. Bacz, focused
mostly on vocabulary, grammar, and how to right an essay. Each one of these subjects combined to
give me a year of hard work, which eventually paid off.
Since, I have always struggled in English, I thought this class was just going to be another hardship.
It's not that I ever got bad grades in English, it's...show more content...
Along with vocabulary, grammar is another area in which I had problems. For instance, I was still
getting confused about proper sentence structure. I worked on this by completing a 30 page
workbook full of different sentences to assist me. From learning verbs to compound–complex
sentences the worksheets covered it all. I was starting to realize this class and Mr. Horbacz were
all about fine tuning me for my big transition into college. The next thing I did was learn how to
organize my thoughts onto paper and write an essay. I knew how to write a basic five paragraph
essay, but my skills were limited. These are all things I struggled with at the beginning of the year,
but soon I started to grow in each area.
After the first couple of months, improvements in my school work were beginning to show, and I
liked it. My vocabulary abilities were revealing themselves as well. For example, when I would
read homework in other classes the words that would sometimes confuse me began to make sense. I
would also listen to other people's conversations on the street and it seemed as if the vocabulary
words that I had just studied the week before, could be heard. It was the weirdest thing. Likewise,
my grammar was developing nicely. For instance, when I would read books I could see the
different ways sentences were portrayed. Things that I never picked up before were coming to me
so much easier. This class that

International Students Essay example
Differences between American Students and International Students Most young people believe that
studying in a different country is a privilege because they are able to experience other cultures, and
learn from them. However, in the United States it is not as good as they thought because
International students have much more pressure being in this country, and sometimes they cannot
handle it very well. Therefore, in the United States the life of an international student is very
unfavorable if people compare it to the life of an American student. International students have to
learn a new language to study, they cannot work while studying, and their tuition is much more
expensive. When people moves to the United Stated to study they...show more content...
They know their structure and have a very superior vocabulary, so they can compose excellent
essays. In addition, since American students speak English very well, they do not have any
problem participating in class. They have confidence in themselves, so they will not be afraid of
saying something wrong. Consequently, because American students do not have to learn any
language to study their mayor, it is much easier for them to achieve excellent grades. Most
university students feel the necessity of working since they would like to have their own money
in order to be independent from their parents. It is not the exception for International students
because they also feel the necessity of working to be independent from their parents or whoever is
responsible for them. However, for international students to work in the United States it is very
difficult because they are only allowed to work on campus. These kinds of jobs are very limited
since some of the campuses in which they study are very small. Also for an international student to
find a job on campus is difficult because people prefer to employee an American student who is
not going to have any problem speaking the language. For example, last semester a friend from
Venezuela who is studying at Miami Dade College decided that he wanted to get a job in order to
have his own money. He went to

English in My Life Essay
When my teacher said "good morning" to me on the very first day of school, I knew
that she would be teaching a tough subject. She didn't get any answer for that greeting because back
then, I knew nothing about "good morning". Surprisingly, as I went through the class
session on that day, I realized that "good morning" wasn't the first English phrase that
I'd known. English has been rooted in my society long before my country achieved its
independence and shockingly I've used some of its words in my daily speech without realizing it
because the words were fully modified by the society so that they could be installed smoothly into
our language. Learning English was always an interesting yet tough experience...show more content...
When someone speaks English in my society, he or she feels a sense of withdrawal because they
are set apart to a very small group in the society. People tend to belittle this group for speaking
other languages, and normally they will end up speaking their first language to comply with the
larger group in the society. With all these reasons, my interest towards English was completely
gone when I enrolled in secondary school, six years after my formal `encounter' with the English
language. For having this negative feeling, I became a member of a large group of students who
had never realized the significance of the English language. One day was unusually dull. I was
waiting for the teacher to come to the class and instead of revising my past English lessons that I
rarely cared about, I prayed that she wouldn't show up that day. After ten minutes' wait, she entered
the class saying "good morning". The greeting didn't bother me much, but when she
came to me asking for the assignment that she gave the day before, I was speechless and I just
gave her the blank handout that I was supposed to complete for that day. Her face showed no
emotion and with that she ripped the paper into pieces. That day marked a massive change in my
attitude toward English lessons and the English language in general. The incident was very
important to me because I then realized that even in a subtle way, language represents people and to
respect the language means to respect

The Dreaded English Class
The dreaded English 102. Could this be my final English course in my career as a student? I don't
know for sure. I still need to decide what my major will be in. There is something that I know for
sure, that is, needing to take this class to move on. I am not certain how my time in this class will
go, but I plan to work hard to get the best grade that I can. Hence, I have decided to get this out of
the way now, I look to fine–tune my writing skills, and I expect this course to help me understand
my writing style. To start, I chose this class because I knew that eventually I would need to
complete it. What better time to do it, than right now? I had recently completed a math course
this past semester, so I did not want to take another stressful class that I find to not be my
strongest subject right after. My brother and some friends have mentioned that this course isn't as
bad as it is said to be. That is what pushed me to sign up and attempt to complete this course. Being
a part time student and working full time is a lot to balance on ones plate. I have learned that
from experience. I formally was a full time student and worked part time, but the roles tend to
reverse once you find yourself struggling to pay bills. Seeing that this class isn't as costly as a
math course, and isn't as time restraining either. This course will give me more time at work and
more time to study. This sums up the reasons I chose to complete English 102. I hope to gain more

English 102 Essay
The reason I decided to take English 102 this fall semester is because it is a required course for
my career path. I am currently pursuing a nursing degree and one of the many required classes
that must be completed prior to achieving my goal is this English course. This English class is
primarily a requirement for school but I hope to obtain new knowledge as well. What I hope to
gain from taking this course is a better understanding of how to write correctly, to be
grammatically correct that is. Also, I hope to learn from others by taking this course, not only the
instructor but my fellow students. I want to step out of my comfort zone and not be so timid, so
that I am able to understand how others think and comprehend this subject. As of right now I have
no set expectations for this course, I only hope that it is new information and that it gives me a
better understanding of how I need to write and think as far as English goes. I have decided that I

My English 101 Experience
As I look back on my English 101 experience, I have come to the conclusion that I have learned
many new things that have improved my abilities as a writer. I have learned some new techniques
that have improved my ways of approaching an essay. I learned all about the rhetorical appeals and
how to apply them in my writing and how to look for them in a essay written by a author. I have also
learned how to argue both sides of a argument, and how to look for reliable sources and to properly
quote and site the author of the essay. I feel as if I have become a better writer and my improved
writing skills are shown within each essay. When I first signed up for English 101 at soar, I thought

I now see myself as a writer who has learned new techniques to help improve my writing including
style, word choice and the revision process. Even though I see myself as a improved writer, I still
believe I have plenty of room for improvement. When I first started English 101, I saw myself as
having a few good strengths and a lot of weaknesses as a writer. Some of my strengths included
being able to write a good introduction minus the thesis part. I also saw myself as knowing how
to write a good conclusion that summarized what I talked about in my essay and being able to
understand a article or essay by knowing what the author was talking about. Some of the
improvements I saw in my writing thorough out the semester is learning how to write an essay
where I can communicate with the audience with my own personal voice. I also feel I improved
on knowing how to properly include quotes and how to find good creditable sources to include in
my essay and on how to include both sides of a argument in my paper. Another improvement I
found in my papers is learning how to revise them and approach each essay. However, there are
some items of writing that I believe I improved on but still needs some work. For example, even
though I have learned all about the rhetorical appeals and how to determine them in a essay, I still
feel as if I do not know how to properly included them in my essay. I also see myself as improving
on knowing how to write a thesis but still need work on

My experience throughout English 101 Essay
My Experience throughout English 101
As writers, many students write to the expectations of their professors and not to their fullest
potential. Throughout English 101 I had been writing only to please my professor or to fill the basic
requirement to pass English. I always felt that my writing ability was never enough for my
professors throughout the previous years. They always wanted clear and concise essays, which for
some reason was unreachable by me. However, starting college and taking English 101 helped me
with my weaknesses and changed my technique of writing essays. My experience in English 101
taught me to write to my fullest potential and to write what I felt; rather then writing what was
required.
In the...show more content...
Also, by revising my essays I felt that I had the chance of writing with a broader sense.
Another weakness that I had coming into English 101 was my way of reading. I remember
having to read an essay or book 3 or 4 times before I could ever sit down and write about it. I was
looking and at the words all wrong. However, my professor introduced a technique of reading
critically. "A critical analysis, on the other hand, takes a viewpoint and attempts to its validity;"
(Trimble, 95) In Trimble's quote he is trying say that a critical analysis helps a reader understand
what the author is really trying to point out. This was the same approach that was taught to me by
my professor. This type of analysis helped me understand better what the author was trying to
convey and it also helped me explain it better in my essays.
Additionally, another weakness that I had when coming into English 101 was that I was a selfish
writer. Like Trimble said, "His natural tendency as a writer is to think primarily of himself– hence to
write primarily for himself." (Trimble, 4) I was a writer who only cared about impressing one
type of audience my professor and not writing to prove a point or expand my knowledge to several
other audiences. However, after writing several unsatisfying essays I had come to realize that my
style of writing was too narrow and boring. In this realization of writing I discovered that what
matters the most is pleasing your audience (many not one), and

American English Essays
The question of whether or not English should be an official language has been a controversial topic
since our country was founded. The English language is a tie that helps combine the many pieces of
our society together. Our nation should not acclaim bilingualism, but should enfold English as the
national language spoken in the United States, to secure the future unity of our nation.
The United States is a nation composed of many immigrants from all around the world. We are a
country of many cultural and racial ethnic groups that are constantly reacting to shape the American
culture. The English language binds and unites immigrants with native– born Americans. English

It is starting to become the international language as well. Speaking one language helps the ability of
all backgrounds to communicate with one another. With so much diversity in the United States, we
need something that joins us together. To speak a language that is used by the world, will help all
Americans. English is the common bond of our community, and understanding it is the only way a
citizen will be able to fully participate in democracy, business, and education. It is the language of
international relations, as well as the language of our historical documents, of communication and of
safety. By making English the official language, it will help to bring together Americans, not propel
them farther apart.
Many Americans are composed of Hispanic origin. With such a great number of the population
speaking a second language, bilingualism will more than likely become an even more common
occurrence in many states, in the future. This thought strongly associates with the job market of the
United States. The second generation is becoming more bilingual, using one language for their home
and the other for business. Workers are going to have to be able to communicate with one another to
get the job done. Should native– born American employees learn to speak Spanish to communicate
with other fellow employees? My answer would have to be, no. A system that accommodates
immigrants in their native languages removes the

For me, learning a language is a complicated process. It is different from learning other subjects. It
involves a lot of practices and follow up. When I talk about my personal experience, I would say
that I have a rich experience in learning English as a second language. English was taught to me for
ten years starting from grade seven till graduation from university. After graduation, I felt that I

fluency. Until now I still learn the language. Indeed, learning a language takes a lifetime.
I started learning English as a second language when I was in first intermediate. I still remember my
first classes and my first teachers. I remember that my teachers changed frequently in the first year
but all of them have much in common. All of them used grammar translation method. They used to
write bilingual lists of words on board, then we, as students, were asked to copy these lists and
memorize them by heart. All teaching concentrated on reading and writing skills, but there were no
activities concentrating on speaking or listening. In addition, grammar rules were taught in that stage
of learning the language as mathematics equations, and we were asked to memorize the rules as we

the appropriateness of using certain vocabulary. English language entails high sense of using the

Reflective Essay On English 101
Proficient writing is an essential skill in all aspects of academic and professional achievement.
English 101, Introduction to Composition and Rhetoric, provided the framework to good writing,
teaching me composition and rhetoric fundamentals, polishing up my grammar and style, and
expressing a clear message. English 102, Composition, Rhetoric, and Research, continued to build
on the skills I learned in English 101, focusing on the subject matter research process and
employing various rhetorical and literary devices to better express a clear message to the reader.
The course also improved my critical thinking capacity, allowing me to culturally evaluate my
target audience, present logically flowing arguments using appropriate language and structure, and
critically reviewing my writing projects for content and expression. Every writer inherently knows
there's always room to improve and I hold fast to this mindset in all academic, professional, and
personal writing projects. English 102 has both challenged and inspired me to grow into a much
better writer than before I began the class, providing the necessary skills to be not just a good
writer, but a great writer.
Most of my English 102 writing projects are rhetorical arguments, intended to persuade the reader in
one direction or another. Reflecting on the many skills I honed in English 102, my predetermined

Standard English Essay
The question to ask is: 'Why not use Standard English all the time?'
Language is a powerful communication tool the user holds to express their individual identity and
ingroup solidarity. The use of Standard English helps to direct this, as it acts as the structure of
communication, ingroup and between speech communities to effectively present a standard for
mutual understanding. Outside of Standard English comes the use of slang, netspeak and textspeak,
which helps to develop and enrich the language, as well as evolve with contemporary Australia and
its fast paced lifestyle. Using the Standard all the time would be exclusive of the linguistic freedom

Other forms of the English language are developed from speech communities with an intention, for
efficiency and to show inclusion, and to exclude others. It also helps to convey a specific identity of
the speaker, with the use of syntactic and phonological differences from Standard English. These
modifications form non–standard dialects, transferring the speaker's cultural background and
language to provide a better perception and reflection of identity. The falling intonation accompanied
with interrogatives in the Asian ethnolect, such as 'Gravy?', is the opposite of the rising intonation
used for the same purpose by Australians, and can quickly cause conflict between the two
communities due to the missing benchmark in language. Pronoun deletion in 'No like' ('I don't like
it') is a feature of many ethnolects (Greek, Aboriginal English), and is differing from the Standard,
yet still helps to get the message across. Ethnolects develop from Standard English, and helps to
express a user's identity through their language use and in–group solidarity within the speech
community.
There are a range of English varieties which are different from the Standard, developed from
communities of speakers all sharing the same use of language. Aboriginal English, a dialect of
Australian English, remains a lingua franca for their speakers, used as a common language to

Reflection On My English 101 Experience
Reflecting on My English 101 Experience I used to consider writing as tumble words from your
mind, write, read it through, fix minor mistakes, and done. However, you rarely get successful. The
truth is many students, including myself, struggle with starting to write a word, or getting stuck in
the middle without knowing the main point of the writing. After completing English 101, I can
explain the writing process, evaluate the strengths of my essay, and identify my weaknesses.
Throughout English 101, I learned that the following the writing process was imperative. Before
taking this class, I use to always skip the pre–writing step considering that it is just an easy and
unnecessary step. Consequently, I struggled to figure how to start writing, and most importantly I
struggled to figure out the main point while writing the draft. And then I finish the first draft close to
the deadline that I do not have time to read it not to mention revising. It was after I started this class
that learned that pre–writing is vital, and requires time and attention as it holds the base of the
whole writing. My professor used different analogies such as blueprint for building and map for
navigation to explain the importance. It really speeded up my writing after I started to utilize it. I
have learned outlining before, but part of the pre–writing that I was fortunate enough to learning in
English 101 is the writing triangle. Even before outlining, the topic, purpose, and audience of the

My Experience In English Writing
English is a core concept in the Untied States and other countries that has allowed inviduals to
advance their knowledge. Not only does English provide an advancement in knowlege, but has
created a way for individuals to share their thoughts and feelings through writing. Which is why
English is one of the four subjects that is required to be taught in almost every school district in
America including mine. I began taking English from a young age which allowed me to take
advanced placement English IV my senior year at Tupelo High School. Advanced Placement English
IV allowed me to further my education in writing, which in return allowed me to overcome
obstacles, low points and discover strengths I never knew I had. Like any other thing in life there
are always obstacles individuals face everyday, for me in my English IV class writing was
something that was very challenging. The first challenge writing presented to me was trying to
organize all of my thoughts, so that it made sense. The first essay I ever wrote in my English class
was a journal entry about a memorable experience, so with that being said I decided I would write
about the experience I had while hunting with my Dad. The hunting experience with my dad had
many different parts, and one of my biggest challenges I had was organizing my thoughts, so that it
flowed correctly. Since I was telling a story within my journal I realized that I was jumping around
more then I should have and this became a problem. I learned

English Class Reflective Essay
Since beginning to write papers in English class, I have had countless successes and failures.
While many of my English classes have taught me how to improve my writing, I have not learned
very much in others. My most recent English class was last year, my sophomore year. My class
was particularly undersized; therefore, it gave each student the opportunity to have additional
individual attention. Throughout the class I experienced high points, weaknesses, and even
difficulties that I never overcame. Overall, my writing skills improved, but only marginally. One
of the high points of the class was consistently making high A's. We wrote a variety of different
types of papers, and my grade was always respectable. Succeeding in this class made me feel
adequately prepared to write proper papers. Although I made impressive grades for the class, I
was able to do so with only minimal effort. Therefore, I knew I could execute my papers better.
The quality of my writing seemed to stay stagnant over the course of the year. This class would
have been exponentially more beneficial had it challenged me to improve my writing, however it
never did. Although I was not overly challenged in my last English class, I have several weaknesses
as a writer. My biggest weakness is neglecting to ask important questions that could improve my
writing. Receiving...show more content...
One of the most problematic difficulties I faced and am still facing is self–revision. When writing a
paper, it is extremely important to revise your essay multiple times before submitting the final
version. Every revision helps to build a more polished essay. I feel that my paper fails to progress
enough from the rough draft to the final. To fix this, I need to give myself longer breaks between
revising. Becoming skilled at revising my own papers will allow me to develop into a more
competent, successful

  • 1. Black English Essay example "Black English" Another Way to Classify Humans "To open your mouth В… You have confessed your parents, your youth, your school, your salary, your self–esteem, and alas, your future ". After reading the two essays, "From Outside, In" by Barbara Mellix and "If Black English Isn't a Language Then Tell Me, What Is?" by James Balwin, I came to realize a few things one of them being that the way we speak, is a means of identifying somebody's culture and background. Much in how a license can tell a person your name, age, were you live etc. a person can tell your race, what kind of education you have and were you are going in life just by hearing you talk. When slavery began, a time in human history that I assume many people would rather...show more content... She would never make me feel "shame" or any less because I was being myself. It must have been hard on Mellix to be told that your language and the language of your forefathers was not "proper" by you own mother. I believe that learning a language is fine for the right reasons. Expanding your knowledge or going to a different country, these are both legitimate reasons to learn a language. Learning a language because you will be ridiculed is not a proper reason. As Fanon stated in Mellix's essay to speak is, "В…above all to assume a culture, to support the weight of a civilization2". So what Fanon suggest is that when you take on a language it is to become part of the culture almost to change your identity, and I agree with that. I find when I meet somebody who can speak multiple languages I look at them with more respect than I would if they only spoke one. Not to say I would look down on a person who only speaks one language, I just find it admirable for somebody who would take the time to learn a new language. Throughout this essay you may have noticed quotations around the terms "black English" and "standard English". This is because I find it ridiculous to split English into two categories. When an Australian speaks and we find it hard to understand them we don't call it "aussie English", or when a person from England comes and we find their English hard to understand we don't call there language "brit English". • 2. Before entering English 1301, I had my doubts about what this class was going to consist of. Considering this is a college level English class, and a subject I struggled in, my worries were not at ease. Throughout the year, my understanding and comprehension of the writing process, as well as how to write different varieties of writing, have strengthened. After partaking in this course, I am confident I have met the student learning outcomes. After completing my first college level English class, I would be expected to meet four student learning outcomes. One of those being I could use rhetorical devices to strengthen my essays. Coming into this course, I did not have a grasp over this subject and knew it was something I could improve on....show more content... I have improved my grammar through feedback from my instructor, and workshops I participated in. There is a significant difference between my writing conventions from the beginning of the year to my present writing conventions. In my second essay, The Drastic Evolution of Teen Life, I have noticed many writing convention errors. In this essay I said, "Also with the lack of technology, they were influenced to be more adventurous and get out of the house and explore things on their own" (The Drastic Evolution of Teen Life) This sentence is a prime example of faulty sentence structure; it lacks punctuation in the right places. My third essay, Euthanasia: Condemned by Doctors, has less errors and shows improvement on these writing conventions. Improvement can be seen in the sentence, " Euthanasia should not be legal because it is not morally correct, undermines medical research, and denies patients the final stage of growth"(Euthanasia: Condemned by Doctors). This shows development on sentence structure, punctuation, and helps gives my essay a polished look. Without this, errors I may have previously made would be even more Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Learning English as a Second Language Essay English is an international language which is used officially all around the world. Anybody who wants to make connections with the world we live in should learn English. I had English language classes in my secondary and high school years. I also took some private English learning courses throughout summers in my country, Turkey. However, I could not improve my English effectively as all Turkish students in Turkey. I fully agree that English will be learned most efficiently in the boundaries of an English–speaking country not in the home country because of some cases. Therefore, I came here, USA, to learn English better after graduation from my university. First, English is dealt with all the time while staying in an English–speaking...show more content... Neither was I able to get their points, nor could they understand me. The reasons were that my Turkish English teachers are not the experts in pronunciation and there is no class focusing on speaking at state schools in Turkey. An experiment was performed by Major et al. about speaking and listening problems for international people. Four groups of one hundred listeners, whose native languages were Chinese, Spanish, Japanese, and American English, heard brief lectures presented in English by speakers with different native languages and answered questions based on the lectures. The results indicated that both native and nonnative listeners scored significantly lower on listening comprehension tests when they listened to nonnative speakers of English, and Chinese group scored significantly lower when listening to speakers who shared their native language. Only Spanish group did well when they listened to their native speaker (174). This experiment showed that learning English from a nonnative speaker may cause troubles in both listening and speaking parts of English. Additionally, I lacked of ability on word choice for the first couple of months in the USA. For example, I was using adjective "too" for positive circumstances " instead of "very" or "so", and I used to say "according to me" instead of "in my Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. My Struggles with English Composition Essay My Struggles with English Composition "...As for all the seniors, I want you to challenge yourselves this year and don't think you're going to cruise through to graduation."–Mrs. Smith, County High School. Although some seniors in high school refuse to take a hard schedule, I decided to take a challenging composition course my last year of high school and learned more than ever before from it. My teacher, Mr. Bacz, focused mostly on vocabulary, grammar, and how to right an essay. Each one of these subjects combined to give me a year of hard work, which eventually paid off. Since, I have always struggled in English, I thought this class was just going to be another hardship. It's not that I ever got bad grades in English, it's...show more content... Along with vocabulary, grammar is another area in which I had problems. For instance, I was still getting confused about proper sentence structure. I worked on this by completing a 30 page workbook full of different sentences to assist me. From learning verbs to compound–complex sentences the worksheets covered it all. I was starting to realize this class and Mr. Horbacz were all about fine tuning me for my big transition into college. The next thing I did was learn how to organize my thoughts onto paper and write an essay. I knew how to write a basic five paragraph essay, but my skills were limited. These are all things I struggled with at the beginning of the year, but soon I started to grow in each area. After the first couple of months, improvements in my school work were beginning to show, and I liked it. My vocabulary abilities were revealing themselves as well. For example, when I would read homework in other classes the words that would sometimes confuse me began to make sense. I would also listen to other people's conversations on the street and it seemed as if the vocabulary words that I had just studied the week before, could be heard. It was the weirdest thing. Likewise, my grammar was developing nicely. For instance, when I would read books I could see the different ways sentences were portrayed. Things that I never picked up before were coming to me so much easier. This class that Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. International Students Essay example Differences between American Students and International Students Most young people believe that studying in a different country is a privilege because they are able to experience other cultures, and learn from them. However, in the United States it is not as good as they thought because International students have much more pressure being in this country, and sometimes they cannot handle it very well. Therefore, in the United States the life of an international student is very unfavorable if people compare it to the life of an American student. International students have to learn a new language to study, they cannot work while studying, and their tuition is much more expensive. When people moves to the United Stated to study they...show more content... They know their structure and have a very superior vocabulary, so they can compose excellent essays. In addition, since American students speak English very well, they do not have any problem participating in class. They have confidence in themselves, so they will not be afraid of saying something wrong. Consequently, because American students do not have to learn any language to study their mayor, it is much easier for them to achieve excellent grades. Most university students feel the necessity of working since they would like to have their own money in order to be independent from their parents. It is not the exception for International students because they also feel the necessity of working to be independent from their parents or whoever is responsible for them. However, for international students to work in the United States it is very difficult because they are only allowed to work on campus. These kinds of jobs are very limited since some of the campuses in which they study are very small. Also for an international student to find a job on campus is difficult because people prefer to employee an American student who is not going to have any problem speaking the language. For example, last semester a friend from Venezuela who is studying at Miami Dade College decided that he wanted to get a job in order to have his own money. • 6. English in My Life Essay When my teacher said "good morning" to me on the very first day of school, I knew that she would be teaching a tough subject. She didn't get any answer for that greeting because back then, I knew nothing about "good morning". Surprisingly, as I went through the class session on that day, I realized that "good morning" wasn't the first English phrase that I'd known. English has been rooted in my society long before my country achieved its independence and shockingly I've used some of its words in my daily speech without realizing it because the words were fully modified by the society so that they could be installed smoothly into our language. Learning English was always an interesting yet tough experience...show more content... When someone speaks English in my society, he or she feels a sense of withdrawal because they are set apart to a very small group in the society. People tend to belittle this group for speaking other languages, and normally they will end up speaking their first language to comply with the larger group in the society. With all these reasons, my interest towards English was completely gone when I enrolled in secondary school, six years after my formal `encounter' with the English language. For having this negative feeling, I became a member of a large group of students who had never realized the significance of the English language. One day was unusually dull. I was waiting for the teacher to come to the class and instead of revising my past English lessons that I rarely cared about, I prayed that she wouldn't show up that day. After ten minutes' wait, she entered the class saying "good morning". The greeting didn't bother me much, but when she came to me asking for the assignment that she gave the day before, I was speechless and I just gave her the blank handout that I was supposed to complete for that day. Her face showed no emotion and with that she ripped the paper into pieces. That day marked a massive change in my attitude toward English lessons and the English language in general. The incident was very important to me because I then realized that even in a subtle way, language represents people and to respect the language means to respect Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. The Dreaded English Class The dreaded English 102. Could this be my final English course in my career as a student? I don't know for sure. I still need to decide what my major will be in. There is something that I know for sure, that is, needing to take this class to move on. I am not certain how my time in this class will go, but I plan to work hard to get the best grade that I can. Hence, I have decided to get this out of the way now, I look to fine–tune my writing skills, and I expect this course to help me understand my writing style. To start, I chose this class because I knew that eventually I would need to complete it. What better time to do it, than right now? I had recently completed a math course this past semester, so I did not want to take another stressful class that I find to not be my strongest subject right after. My brother and some friends have mentioned that this course isn't as bad as it is said to be. That is what pushed me to sign up and attempt to complete this course. Being a part time student and working full time is a lot to balance on ones plate. I have learned that from experience. I formally was a full time student and worked part time, but the roles tend to reverse once you find yourself struggling to pay bills. Seeing that this class isn't as costly as a math course, and isn't as time restraining either. This course will give me more time at work and more time to study. This sums up the reasons I chose to complete English 102. I hope to gain more writing experience in Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. English 102 Essay The reason I decided to take English 102 this fall semester is because it is a required course for my career path. I am currently pursuing a nursing degree and one of the many required classes that must be completed prior to achieving my goal is this English course. This English class is primarily a requirement for school but I hope to obtain new knowledge as well. What I hope to gain from taking this course is a better understanding of how to write correctly, to be grammatically correct that is. Also, I hope to learn from others by taking this course, not only the instructor but my fellow students. I want to step out of my comfort zone and not be so timid, so that I am able to understand how others think and comprehend this subject. As of right now I have no set expectations for this course, I only hope that it is new information and that it gives me a better understanding of how I need to write and think as far as English goes. I have learned some new techniques that have improved my ways of approaching an essay. I learned all about the rhetorical appeals and how to apply them in my writing and how to look for them in a essay written by a author. I have also learned how to argue both sides of a argument, and how to look for reliable sources and to properly quote and site the author of the essay. I feel as if I have become a better writer and my improved writing skills are shown within each essay. I now see myself as a writer who has learned new techniques to help improve my writing including style, word choice and the revision process. Even though I see myself as a improved writer, I still believe I have plenty of room for improvement. When I first started English 101, I saw myself as having a few good strengths and a lot of weaknesses as a writer. Some of my strengths included being able to write a good introduction minus the thesis part. I also saw myself as knowing how to write a good conclusion that summarized what I talked about in my essay and being able to understand a article or essay by knowing what the author was talking about. Some of the improvements I saw in my writing thorough out the semester is learning how to write an essay where I can communicate with the audience with my own personal voice. I also feel I improved on knowing how to properly include quotes and how to find good creditable sources to include in my essay and on how to include both sides of a argument in my paper. Another improvement I found in my papers is learning how to revise them and approach each essay. However, there are some items of writing that I believe I improved on but still needs some work. For example, even though I have learned all about the rhetorical appeals and how to determine them in a essay, I still feel as if I do not know how to properly included them in my essay. • 10. My experience throughout English 101 Essay My Experience throughout English 101 As writers, many students write to the expectations of their professors and not to their fullest potential. Throughout English 101 I had been writing only to please my professor or to fill the basic requirement to pass English. I always felt that my writing ability was never enough for my professors throughout the previous years. They always wanted clear and concise essays, which for some reason was unreachable by me. However, starting college and taking English 101 helped me with my weaknesses and changed my technique of writing essays. Also, by revising my essays I felt that I had the chance of writing with a broader sense. Another weakness that I had coming into English 101 was my way of reading. I remember having to read an essay or book 3 or 4 times before I could ever sit down and write about it. I was looking and at the words all wrong. However, my professor introduced a technique of reading critically. "A critical analysis, on the other hand, takes a viewpoint and attempts to its validity;" (Trimble, 95) In Trimble's quote he is trying say that a critical analysis helps a reader understand what the author is really trying to point out. This was the same approach that was taught to me by my professor. This type of analysis helped me understand better what the author was trying to convey and it also helped me explain it better in my essays. Additionally, another weakness that I had when coming into English 101 was that I was a selfish writer. Like Trimble said, "His natural tendency as a writer is to think primarily of himself– hence to write primarily for himself." (Trimble, 4) I was a writer who only cared about impressing one type of audience my professor and not writing to prove a point or expand my knowledge to several other audiences. However, after writing several unsatisfying essays I had come to realize that my style of writing was too narrow and boring. In this realization of writing I discovered that what matters the most is pleasing your audience (many not one), and Get more content on HelpWriting.net

The English language is a tie that helps combine the many pieces of our society together. Our nation should not acclaim bilingualism, but should enfold English as the national language spoken in the United States, to secure the future unity of our nation. The United States is a nation composed of many immigrants from all around the world. English is the common bond of our community, and understanding it is the only way a citizen will be able to fully participate in democracy, business, and education. It is the language of international relations, as well as the language of our historical documents, of communication and of safety. By making English the official language, it will help to bring together Americans, not propel them farther apart. Many Americans are composed of Hispanic origin. With such a great number of the population speaking a second language, bilingualism will more than likely become an even more common occurrence in many states, in the future. This thought strongly associates with the job market of the United States. The second generation is becoming more bilingual, using one language for their home and the other for business. Workers are going to have to be able to communicate with one another to get the job done. Should native– born American employees learn to speak Spanish to communicate with other fellow employees? My answer would have to be, no. A system that accommodates immigrants in their native languages removes the Get more content on HelpWriting.net

When I talk about my personal experience, I would say that I have a rich experience in learning English as a second language. English was taught to me for ten years starting from grade seven till graduation from university. After graduation, I felt that I should improve my language skills. Therefore, I did a lot of efforts personally to increase my fluency. Until now I still learn the language. Indeed, learning a language takes a lifetime. I started learning English as a second language when I was in first intermediate. I still remember my first classes and my first teachers. I remember that my teachers changed frequently in the first year but all of them have much in common. All of them used grammar translation method. They used to write bilingual lists of words on board, then we, as students, were asked to copy these lists and memorize them by heart. All teaching concentrated on reading and writing skills, but there were no activities concentrating on speaking or listening. In addition, grammar rules were taught in that stage of learning the language as mathematics equations, and we were asked to memorize the rules as we ...show more content... • 14. Reflective Essay On English 101 Proficient writing is an essential skill in all aspects of academic and professional achievement. English 101, Introduction to Composition and Rhetoric, provided the framework to good writing, teaching me composition and rhetoric fundamentals, polishing up my grammar and style, and expressing a clear message. English 102, Composition, Rhetoric, and Research, continued to build on the skills I learned in English 101, focusing on the subject matter research process and employing various rhetorical and literary devices to better express a clear message to the reader. The course also improved my critical thinking capacity, allowing me to culturally evaluate my target audience, present logically flowing arguments using appropriate language and structure, and critically reviewing my writing projects for content and expression. Every writer inherently knows there's always room to improve and I hold fast to this mindset in all academic, professional, and personal writing projects. English 102 has both challenged and inspired me to grow into a much better writer than before I began the class, providing the necessary skills to be not just a good writer, but a great writer. Most of my English 102 writing projects are rhetorical arguments, intended to persuade the reader in one direction or another. Reflecting on the many skills I honed in English 102, my predetermined use of rhetorical strategies (ethos, logos, pathos), developing a concise thesis statement, and clearly defining Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Language is a powerful communication tool the user holds to express their individual identity and ingroup solidarity. The use of Standard English helps to direct this, as it acts as the structure of communication, ingroup and between speech communities to effectively present a standard for mutual understanding. Outside of Standard English comes the use of slang, netspeak and textspeak, which helps to develop and enrich the language, as well as evolve with contemporary Australia and its fast paced lifestyle. Other forms of the English language are developed from speech communities with an intention, for efficiency and to show inclusion, and to exclude others. It also helps to convey a specific identity of the speaker, with the use of syntactic and phonological differences from Standard English. These modifications form non–standard dialects, transferring the speaker's cultural background and language to provide a better perception and reflection of identity. The falling intonation accompanied with interrogatives in the Asian ethnolect, such as 'Gravy?', is the opposite of the rising intonation used for the same purpose by Australians, and can quickly cause conflict between the two communities due to the missing benchmark in language. Pronoun deletion in 'No like' ('I don't like it') is a feature of many ethnolects (Greek, Aboriginal English), and is differing from the Standard, yet still helps to get the message across. Ethnolects develop from Standard English, and helps to express a user's identity through their language use and in–group solidarity within the speech community. There are a range of English varieties which are different from the Standard, developed from communities of speakers all sharing the same use of language. • 16. Reflection On My English 101 Experience Reflecting on My English 101 Experience I used to consider writing as tumble words from your mind, write, read it through, fix minor mistakes, and done. However, you rarely get successful. The truth is many students, including myself, struggle with starting to write a word, or getting stuck in the middle without knowing the main point of the writing. After completing English 101, I can explain the writing process, evaluate the strengths of my essay, and identify my weaknesses. Throughout English 101, I learned that the following the writing process was imperative. Before taking this class, I use to always skip the pre–writing step considering that it is just an easy and unnecessary step. Consequently, I struggled to figure how to start writing, and most importantly I struggled to figure out the main point while writing the draft. And then I finish the first draft close to the deadline that I do not have time to read it not to mention revising. It was after I started this class that learned that pre–writing is vital, and requires time and attention as it holds the base of the whole writing. My professor used different analogies such as blueprint for building and map for navigation to explain the importance. It really speeded up my writing after I started to utilize it. I have learned outlining before, but part of the pre–writing that I was fortunate enough to learning in English 101 is the writing triangle. Even before outlining, the topic, purpose, and audience of the Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Not only does English provide an advancement in knowlege, but has created a way for individuals to share their thoughts and feelings through writing. Which is why English is one of the four subjects that is required to be taught in almost every school district in America including mine. I began taking English from a young age which allowed me to take advanced placement English IV my senior year at Tupelo High School. Advanced Placement English IV allowed me to further my education in writing, which in return allowed me to overcome obstacles, low points and discover strengths I never knew I had. Like any other thing in life there are always obstacles individuals face everyday, for me in my English IV class writing was something that was very challenging. The first challenge writing presented to me was trying to organize all of my thoughts, so that it made sense. The first essay I ever wrote in my English class was a journal entry about a memorable experience, so with that being said I decided I would write about the experience I had while hunting with my Dad. The hunting experience with my dad had many different parts, and one of my biggest challenges I had was organizing my thoughts, so that it flowed correctly. Since I was telling a story within my journal I realized that I was jumping around more then I should have and this became a problem. I learned Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 20. English Class Reflective Essay Since beginning to write papers in English class, I have had countless successes and failures. While many of my English classes have taught me how to improve my writing, I have not learned very much in others. My most recent English class was last year, my sophomore year. My class was particularly undersized; therefore, it gave each student the opportunity to have additional individual attention. Throughout the class I experienced high points, weaknesses, and even difficulties that I never overcame. Overall, my writing skills improved, but only marginally. One of the high points of the class was consistently making high A's. We wrote a variety of different types of papers, and my grade was always respectable. Succeeding in this class made me feel adequately prepared to write proper papers. Although I made impressive grades for the class, I was able to do so with only minimal effort. Therefore, I knew I could execute my papers better. The quality of my writing seemed to stay stagnant over the course of the year. This class would have been exponentially more beneficial had it challenged me to improve my writing, however it never did. Although I was not overly challenged in my last English class, I have several weaknesses as a writer. My biggest weakness is neglecting to ask important questions that could improve my writing.
