Jewish Christmas Research Paper
We celebrate Christmas holidays and Easter holidays. However, there is a third holiday, a third observance, a third sacred event that is just as central to
our understanding of what it means to be a Christian and what it means to belong to the church.
That third event is called Pentecost Sunday. This third great day in the Christian calendar is rooted in the story in Acts 2 and celebrates the day when
the Holy Spirit descended on the apostles who were gathered in a room in Jerusalem. Before Pentecost, those men 1. were hiding from the public for
fear that what had happened to Jesus might also happen to them. After Pentecost, those frightened men 2. had become suddenly and miraculously
equipped and empowered to carry on the ministry Jesus had begun.
Pentecost began as and remains one of the major holidays on the Jewish calendar that occurs 50 days after Passover. The word Pentecost literally
means "50th or 50th day." For Jews, Pentecost was the time when they celebrated the first harvest of the agricultural year. It was a time when they
gave thanks to God for what the land had produced and for what their labor had yielded. 3.
For Christians, Pentecost marks the birthday of the Christian church, the day when Peter preached and in response to that sermon there were 3,000
souls converted. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While they all were huddled in a room in Jerusalem behind locked doors and shuttered windows, they heard the sound of a rushing wind. What
appeared to be tongues of fire seemed to settle over the head of each person. They began to speak in other languages, but what they were saying was
understood clearly in the native language of each person gathered in Jerusalem that day. You see, the power of Pentecost was not the unknown
tongues in which the apostles were speaking. The miracle was that people from every known region of the world were able to understand what was
being said in his or her language.

The Important Beliefs Celebrated at Easter and How They are Celebrated
Easter Sunday comes at the end of holy week which consists of many days which have a significant meaning. The six weeks leading up to easter is
called lent and this is celebrated by many people giving up one of their luxuries, for example, chocolates and sweets. They do this because they are
remembering when jesus was in the desert and was tempted by the devil and how jesus rejected his offer. During the time of lent, comes a day called
ash Wednesday which certain churches have the ceremony of putting ash on to the foreheads of people as a symbol of receieving forgiveness.

Good Friday remembers how jesus was crucified which is a serious and sombre occasion. It is called Good Friday because people remember how
jesus sacrificed his own life to save mankind. The anglican, Roman Catholic and Orthodox churches are stripped of all colourful decorations,
crosses, candles and hangings. This is to remind the worshipers of the fact that jesus felt deserted and desolate on the cross. On Good Friday, when
people attend the church, the story of The Passion is read, and in some churches the priest will enveil a crucifix and say 'this is the wood of the
cross on which the saviour of the world died.' The people will then walk up to the alter to kiss the feet of the carved christ as a mark of respect. Free
churches will not have the same ritual, but they will have a service in which the Passion story is read and thanks will be given to Jesus for going on
the cross and saving humanity from their sins.
Easter Saturday is when Roman Catholic, Orthodox and many Anglican churches keep an easter vigil on the Saturday evening. The congregation
gather outside the church where a bonfire is burning. A large candle is brought out, called the Paschal candle. It has a cross on it and the greek letters
alpha and omega. The priest places five

The Importance Of Tradition In Shirley Jackson's The Lottery
Following Tradition
When one thinks of the word tradition, the thought that often comes to mind is a positive one, such as the thought of Christmas dinner at grandma's
house or church on Easter Sunday. Most of these traditions we follow blindly, meaning that it is just something we do even if we do not remember
why. According to the Merriam–Webster Dictionary, atradition is "an inherited, established, or customary pattern of thought or action" (757). Since it
is inherited, we do not really have a say in receiving it or not. It is expected that we continue the tradition because that's what our ancestors have done.
While following a long line of tradition can be truly great, when the reason for the tradition becomes blurred it can become harmful. In Shirley
Jackson's "The Lottery," blindness can be undesirable when following a tradition and can make that tradition dangerous.
My family has many traditions that we practice. As I mentioned before we go to Church on Easter Sunday. Many little details make this tradition
the tradition that it is. The whole family gets dressed up in their very best and as a family we go to mass and praise Jesus. After mass, we stay
dressed up and meet our relatives at CafГ© 422 for a giant Italian meal. Once we all are too stuffed to take in anymore, we retreat to my aunt's house
where we can finally get into comfortable clothing and hang out in the living room usually playing some type of game or watching a movie. For me, I
follow this tradition

The Easter Controversy Essay
The Easter Controversy
Easter is the most important celebration for Christianity because it commemorates the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, a foundational notion upon which
the faith is built. Accordingly, it is the principle feast and the high point of the ecclesiastical year, which has been an established tradition as old as
Christianity. Easter has been universally observed since the middle of the second century. The original celebration generally consisted of a vigil with
readings followed by a feast with the Eucharist. This was a time for rejoicing because the suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus were seen as a
saving unit. Christ's transition from death to resurrection, which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By the end of the second century, the majority of the Western churches had come to celebrate the Resurrection on the Sunday that followed the 14th
day of the Jewish month Nisan. The Western Asiatic churches commemorated Jesus' death rather than His resurrection and observed it on the 14th day
of Nisan, whether that day fell on a Sunday or not. Therefore, what became known as the Easter Controversy was not an argument over the day of
Jesus' resurrection, but rather a disagreement over what day was most appropriate to commemorate it annually (Catholic Encyclopedia).
The Easter Controversy is the name given to the drawn out dispute in the early Church over the exact date for the celebration of Easter. As
previously mentioned, this disagreement originated between the West and East at about the middle of the second century. Basically, what was under
concern was whether the Easter celebration must be observed on a Sunday or if it should be celebrated on the 14th day of Nisan, regardless of the
day on which this date may fall. This was the day on which the Jews celebrated Passover, which is why the Eastern churches like in Asia felt that
since the two festivals were related, it was only fitting to celebrate Easter on that same day. Although these followers claimed to have received this
practice from certain Apostles, specifically John and Philip, they were

Christianity, Judaism, And Islam
World religions have been a key factor in the development of the world throughout the course of time. Religions like Christianity, Judaism, and Islam
have been the major players in the development. These religions impacted the world and future development through their holidays, foods, and through
their sports. The future of the world was shaped around these three religions and more is yet to come. They impacted the world in many ways, but there
were certain things like all the different holidays and the different cultures that were practiced to make the world have a more diverse culture.
There are many different holidays celebrated in each of these religions. Each religion celebrates different holidays and in many different ways. The
way each faith celebrates represents their diversity from one another. Each religion stands out by the major holidays it celebrates and what each holiday
stands for.
Christianity celebrates many different holidays such as Christmas, Easter, Ash Wednesday, and Pentecost. These holidays help christian people become
closer to God through prayer and thinking. These holidays represent what the christian faith believes in and they celebrate them to show thanks and to
give back to the church. They celebrate holidays in many different ways, but all of them are for a common purpose.
Christianity celebrates Christmas on the 25th of December to commemorate the birth of Jesus who is believed to be the son of God. This is a day of holy

The Holiday's of Suriname
Suriname is a small country located on the northern coast of South America. The people of Suriname take their holidays and other celebrations very
seriously. Suriname celebrates many of the same holidays as the rest of the world, but also celebrates many of their own holidays. Phagwah Day is a
very popular Hindu holiday, celebrated in Suriname. This holiday is celebrated on the last full moon of the lunar month, known as Phalguna.
Phalguna is the twelfth month on the Hindu calendar, the same calendar that governs the Hindu religious life. Phagwah Day is celebrated all over the
country at festivals and parties. Phagwah Day marks the beginning of spring in Suriname, and is known in Suriname as the festival of color. The
people, who go the Phagwah festivals, wear the color white to show that they are ready to celebrate and get dirty. Today, Hinduism is one of the main
religions in Suriname, and at one point was the most common religion. This may be a key factor in why Phagwah Day is so popular in Suriname.
Although Phagwah Day is a very popular holiday, the people of Suriname celebrate even larger holidays. Boxing Day is the holiday that is
celebrated the day after Christmas by the adults in Suriname. Boxing Day is a holiday in which the employees of a company are given the day off
and receive a gift from their boss. Boxing Day is celebrated in many of the commonwealth countries around the world. Boxing Day is said to be a
European holiday that dated back to the Middle Ages.

Roman mythology applies to the religious system, and origins of ancient Rome. These attributes are found through the art and literature that the
Romans provide. Although, the Romans have supernatural elements they still proceeded to treat their traditional stories historically. The Romans
focused on how a person contributes to the Roman community, and merely concentrate on politics and morality. Catholicism is one of the most
common known religions. Catholicism focuses on the traditions, and values of the Christian churches. The two main things that differentiate Roman
mythology, and modern day catholicism is their: beliefs and religion.

Who did the Romans believe and worship in?
Ancient Roman religion played a very important role, they were known for having a Polytheistic religion. During this time period, they centered their
lives around believing and worshiping multiple gods. There were all different types of goddess' such as goddess of: war, sea, hunting, healing and
wisdom, love, and ect. Although, out of all the different gods Jupiter was the most important. Jupiter was the king of all gods that Romans worshiped.
Each god would have a special festival day, which was celebrated by the public. They could come the temples and worship the god, and also bring
them animals to sacrifice.
How did the Romans live out their religion?
Ancient Roman religion had many state official religious posts. Each individual post had a different purpose, and served an important role. There
were five posts: Pontiffs, Haruspexs, Augurs, Flamens, and Vestal Virgins. Pontiffs created a code, calendar, and dates of religious days. Haruspex
was a priest who told people their futures. He was great at telling their futures only because he outlived civilization for centuries. Augurs decided what
and when the gods approved government action. Flamens were priests who approved/disapproved different sacrifices. There were three major
Flamens: Jupiter, Mars, and Quirinus. Vestal Virgins had the job of making sure the sacred fire of Vestal burned. At these posts were where the
Romans practiced their religion.

"I am SO hungry." "I should've ordered two steaks." "Guys, I literally can't wait one more second to eat my garlic mashed potatoes." Nora and
Sydney run to the bathroom giggling, skipping along. Shortly after they return our steaming, delicious smelling meals are set in front of us. We are
devouring our juicy steaks, savory potatoes, tender lobster, and crunchy chicken strips when something behind the over towering brick fire place
dividing the dining room from the bar makes a popping sound louder than I've ever heard before. I think to myself, "Was that a celebration coming

area towards the bar. In their hands? Guns. Again my dad is yelling, this time, "shoot that bastard". I suddenly realize the noise was not a firework
or even a champagne bottle, it was gun shot. Before I can think much more, commands are yelled at us to be quiet and to get down. Next, I am
under the dining table where I was once enjoying my juicy steak now "hiding" with my loved ones. I look to Charlie and ask, "is this really
happening right now?", he looks at me dead in the eye and nods. I turn to my mom and see her sobbing and keep repeating, "I can't believe this is
happening to us." It felt like we were under the tables for an eternity. After a few minutes I looked over by the steps into another level of the dining
room to find my grandparents friends crouched down who just happened to be at the restaurant as well. The woman and I made eye contact and she
scooted over. She assured me we were ok but someone was shot dead in the bar. Suddenly another command was shouted at us, "Everyone get out!".

Church Visit Response Essay
Church Visit Response Essay I grew up going to Catholic Church my whole life. I have completed all my sacraments and attended 11 years of
catechism. I am very comfortable in a Catholic Church and feel very at ease with the atmosphere and rituals performed in a Catholic church. The
only time I have ever stepped foot in a church that was not Catholic has only been for a wake or a wedding. So when it comes to experiencing
different kinds of cultural and religious practices, I am very naГЇve. Catholic mass is very quiet and serene. We sing the same hymns and keep the
decibels very low. Mass always follows the same pattern and it is very structured. Although I feel connected to theCatholic Church, I have stopped
attending on a regular basis as I have gotten older. I feel that I have stopped attending because I would often leave church not feeling fulfilled. I have
a friend who has been inviting to her church for a few years. I took this essay as an opportunity to finally attend. I visited Celebration Church on
Easter Sunday 2016. Given that it was a special Christian holiday, the church was incredibly crowded. They had numerous children activities taking
place in the parking lot. The church volunteers that helped me find a parking and greeted me as I walked through the door were extremely friendly. I
am not trying to sound cynical, but they were almost too friendly. This was the first thing I noticed that set this church apart from what I have
previously experienced. In fact

My Experience Of The Church And My Church
My whole life I had been attending church with my family. It was just a regular thing that we did every Sunday and sometimes on Wednesdays. I
thought because I had two parents that had been Christians for their whole lives it automatically made me a Christian from the instant I was born.
I thought there was no need for me to do the initiation prayer and profess my faith publically, but I was wrong. In the second grade I realized Jesus
needed to be something I had to make my own thing and He was something I had to pursue by myself. On Easter Sunday when I was in second
grade my church was having something special for the students in first through sixth grade. Everyone in those grades were going to met on the
grass behind the church. On the grass was a huge tent where we were going to have our special Easter message. Of course I had already heard the
Easter stories multiple times by now and I did not think anything special was going to happen. They gave us the message about how God died on
the cross for our sins so we did not have to, then he rose again on the third day. After the message the leaders let us plays some games. I remember
one game in which we had to fish for the ducks with magnets and if you fished out the duck with the special sign on the bottom you got a prize. I
did not win but one of my friends did win and I was happy for him. Near the end of the service we began to do worship, which honestly was my least
favorite part. I never liked singing the adult song

The Bombing Of Lahore, Pakistan
On Easter Sunday, Lahore, Pakistan was next in a growing list of countries attacked on a large by a suicide bomber in the past six months. The
bombing, later claimed by Taliban affiliate Jamaat–ul–Ahrar, targeted a park populated with Christian women and children celebrating the holiday.
Photos of bloody victims and rescuers soon surfaced as well as first–hand accounts of the explosion. The sheer horror and violent nature of the story
and the photos as well as the constant international attention on terrorism makes the story impactful and fits with the unfortunately familiar narrative
that has developed in the post–9/11 world. The story broke on Easter morning all over the world, and therefore, it fits four of the five criteria that Doris
Graber and Johanna Dunaway set in Mass Media and American Politics for how stories are deemed newsworthy (113–114). However, the final
criterion, proximity, is the significant in regards to how the Lahore bombing was and continues to be covered in mainstream media. Both National
Public Radio (NPR) and Al Jazeera posted articles on Easter Sunday after the bombing, and while many aspects of the articles are the same, there exist
key differences. NPR's status as a semi–publically owned American media company and Al Jazeera's status as a government owned Qatari media
accompany account for those difference in their coverage the Lahore, Pakistan attacks. The revolution of the new news accounts for their similarities.
NPR posted its story,

Celebrating Easter in Romania Essay
One of the most important religious holidays in Romania is Easter, the annual festival commemorating the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is celebrated
on a Sunday on changeable dates between March and April. Usually it is a week after the Catholic Easter. In Romania, the Christian Church says that
Jesus was born during the winter solstice and his death followed by his resurrection happened during the spring equinox.
Everyone, rich or poor, dresses in their best clothing; some are dressed in national costumes and attend to the midnight church service. Candles are lit
from the priest to each person throughout the service, solemnly utter "Jesus Christ has resurrected" and sing prayers. After the service there is a

Then the eggs are decorated manually using a goose feather, chisita (thin and round stick made of wood), to write the motifs or symbols, and a little
brush, to cover the larger spaces or thick lines. To decorate the eggs is used vegetal colors obtained from sweet apple peal, onion leafs or flowers.
In Romania the painted eggs represent a proof of the tradition, beliefs and Easter customs being placed among the elements of great folk, cultural
value, which define the ethnical peculiarities of our people. There is a tradition of knocking eggs which must be respected: two people hold eggs in
their hand and they break the other's person egg saying "Christ is rising!" The person that has their egg broken is considered weaker and has to give
their egg to the other person. Forty days people will greet each other with "Christ is rising!" instead of the regular greetings.
The midnight mass with candle light, the view of thousands of candles lit in the darkness in the silence of the night, makes us feel peaceful. It is said
that lit candles prevent thunder and lightning from harming people as they return home. After the Church service, people leave with their candle still
lit returning home to place them in their home, to give light to the members of the family that did not attend the

Essay about The Jesus I Never Knew by Phillip Yancey
The Jesus I Never Knew by Phillip Yancey
Yancey starts out with the image of Jesus. When he was young he had envisioned Jesus to have angelic features such as, young, handsome, and a
compassionate face. It wasn't until he entered into a Christian college, that he was introduced to the real image of Jesus. I had an immediate connection
with Yancey. I too had an image of Christ in my head, which consisted of Hollywood portrayals and those in classical paintings. It wasn't till I engaged
myself at a Christian college, that I have now received a new and more accurate picture of Christ. His book, The Jesus I Never Knew, questions the
reader with the thought, "How many Christians today are in the same position, not fully understanding ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unfortunately, this fact is so true of our society today, but Yancey goes on to show how Jesus makes an extra effort to reach out to he poor. He
gives a list, which he got from another writer, on the advantages of being poor. This list really made an impact on me. It showed me how I need to
be more open to what God has to say, and not so involved with the materialistic and secular views of today. I need to focus on what God has planned
for me, and not make my focus to be what other people think of me. "Strength, good looks, connections, and the competitive instinct may bring a
person success in a society like ours, but those very qualities may block entrance to the kingdom of heaven" (Yancey 114). In Jesus' Resurrection,
Yancey gives some personal life experience to connect with the reader, and explain the significance of Easter Sunday. He tells the story of how his
cat died on Easter Sunday when he was young. It was on this day that Yancey learned what he called "the ugly world," irreversible. Then later on in
his life he ends up loosing three friends in one year. All three died in different situations, but it was a difficult time for Yancey. He uses the deaths of
his friends as another event that is irreversible. He compares the loss of his cat and friends to the feeling of loss the disciples had when Jesus died. The
disciples grieved for Jesus' death just as Yancey did for his cat and friends,

Cut Lilies Symbolism
Warren's poem "Cut Lilies" describes a person's thoughts and memories on one Easter Sunday. Primarily through the use of symbolism, the poem
illustrates the narrator's yearning for the days when he still had faith in his religion.
In the beginning, the narrator recounts regrets the presence of "more than a hundred dollars of [cut lilies]" (1). The purple and white flowers cover
the room, and the narrator thinks of all the vases he will need for them. The poems shifts to focus on the narrator's memories; reminiscing about the
children he used to see at Sevilla's Easter, a celebration in Spain, the narrator recalls how once he ran through marshes with skunk cabbage. As night
grows near and Easter ends, the room darkens and the saccharin scent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The narrator, wanting to relive Easter as he did when he was religious, purchased lilies, associated with the holiday, to celebrate. He describes
having these flowers as "pure folly," for he feels foolish for believing that the lilies would somehow inspire the feelings he used to feel on Easter.
Since the narrator is no longer religious, the holiday will never make him feel as it once did; nevertheless, the narrator still recalls how he once
watched children "cradle / candles that dribbled hot white on their fingers / chanting Latin–just to fashion Sevilla's Easter" (7–9). According to the
poem, the sight used to sadden the narrator, but he can no longer feel the same emotion. He also remembers "mucking through streambeds with the
skunk cabbage raising / bursting violet spears" (10–11). Asymbol of perseverance and optimism, skunk cabbage holds its shoots upright and ready for
the return of spring even as its leaves die in the chill of winter. The narrator formerly fostered hope in the truth of his religion, but now he no longer
believes. Despite this lack of faith, he clearly still misses how he once felt; this doubt did not come of the narrator's own

The Importance Of The Symbol System Of The Msm Liturgy On...
1.0Introduction Ritual can be defined as a religious or solemn ceremony which is made up of a sequence of actions performed in order to achieve a
particular outcome. The purpose of this ethnographic report is to examine the effectiveness of the symbol system of the MSM liturgy in terms of the
ritual purpose and the extent of the reflection on Christian stories and beliefs of the Easter Triduum. This case study aims to analyse the level of
engagement and understanding in the community of the symbol system represented in the MSM liturgy in terms of the Easter Triduum by surveying
students and conducting an interview. The symbol system of the MSM liturgy on Holy Thursday was highly effective in engaging the community in a
reflection on the Easter Story when the participants came with prior knowledge, as this offered a better understanding and insight to the liturgy which
made it easier to follow. The contemporary symbols were engaging and effectively communicated the Easter Story to the whole community, whereas
the traditional elements were ineffective in engaging the majority of the members. 2.0Method of Inquiry 2.1Primary Data Primary data was data
collected and is evident throughout the report in the form of student surveys (Refer to appendix 1), teacher interviews (Refer to appendix 2), Ms
Terrey's address as well as photos and the order of service which was gathered from the liturgy and booklet. All the primary sources provided insider

Reflection Paper
I never thought that I would be considered a disappointment to my family until the summer of 2017. As a black child you are raised and expected
to have a certain religion and abide by it, but as I got older I became open minded and realized that this "idea" of religion is a hoax and is not real. This
one belief and idea that I came across changed how my family will view me for ever , as I walked my journey to a non Christian lifestyle.
The beginning of my religious journey or my journey to the truth as I should call it started from my anxious and impatient brother begging me to
go to his room to watch a "special video about Christianity. At first I didn't want to go because every time my brother wants to show me
something it's usually something dumb and uninteresting to me, but I gave it a try. As soon as I went into the room a young black man appeared
on the screen with a black background playing emotionally depressing music. He immediately started asking questions like " Who told you/taught
you to believe in Christianity? Why do you ? Why do you put a tree up in your home during the holidays and dye eggs on easter ? My attention
immediately drew to him as if he were the ice cream man and I was a hungry five year old child. I was appalled by his opinions and views that
Christianity was created by the Europeans to divide people and make another seem inferior. It was used to denigrate and dehumanize people if they
didn't believe in that faith, and most importantly

Chocolat Movie Critique
Chocolat is about a war between the forces of paganism and Christianity, and because the pagan heroine has chocolate on her side, she wins. Her
victory is delayed only because, during Lent, a lot of the locals aren't eating chocolate. The movie happens in the backdrop of a French village. Vianne
Rocher (Juliette Binoche), an expert chocolatier, drifts across Europe with her daughter Anouk (Victorie Thivisol), following the north wind. In the
beginning of the Lenten season in 1959, "fifteen years after the War," they travel to the French village that closely adheres to tradition, as led by the
village mayor, the Comte de Reynaud (Alfred Molina).
Just as the villagers begin observing the forty days of Lent, Vianne opens a chocolate shop, much to Reynaud's displeasure. "Chocolat" was directed by

She does not fit in well with the townspeople, but is nevertheless optimistic about her business. Her friendly and alluring nature begins to win the

Vianne and her confections is Armande (Judi Dench), her elderly, eccentric landlady. Armande is unhappy that her cold, devoutly pious daughter
Caroline (Carrie–Anne Moss) will not let Armande see her grandson Luc because Caroline thinks Armande is a "bad influence". Vianne arranges for
Luc and his grandmother to see each other in the chocolaterie, where they develop a close bond. Caroline later reveals to Vianne that her mother is a

Hayden remembers his father waking up early on Sunday morning "hands that ached from labor in the weekday"(4) his father would call for him
early that morning and Hayden would put on his clothes to get his day started with his father rather if it was helping his father start a fire to keep
the house warm, he would get up and help his father "fearing the chronic anger of that house."(8). I feel that the speaker is reminiscing over how
his father used to get him up early on Sunday mornings to help with anything his father needed help with. I remember when I was a young boy, my
father would make me get up early on Saturday morning to help him cut some yards he used to tell me "early birds catch the worms" back then I
couldn't understand why he was making me get up and go to work with him, but now I see that he was only doing that to make me a man and also
there was "offices" that I had to do. The speaker attitude is most likely the same he is looking back when he was younger seeing what his father was
making him do was to make him a man and to show him that he had to work to survive. Conclusion, The author Robert Hayden feels that he will never
know how much his father has done for him as a child. Not to mention that his father went unrecognized for the acts he has done for his family.

realized how much history took place in Southern Arizona, so it's interesting to be able to learn about the people who made Arizona the state it is
today. It's very important for me to learn about the Yaqui, since the Pascua Yaqui tribe is based right here in Tucson, Arizona. Knowing the history of
your state, country, culture, etc. is important so that you understand the present times and how the future could be formed. As for choosing to research
the rituals of the Yaqui, I thought it would be a good opportunity to learn about the different rituals that take place in their everyday lives and how
these ceremonies differ from events that take place in my own life.
The Yaqui have evolved themselves into having a blendedreligion, with the use of syncretism. Syncretism is, "the mixing/blending of elements from

Samalan Christmas Religion
In Spain, Samana Santa is the most spectacular one–week celebration of Easter that I have ever seen. It is a week of celebration leading to Easter
weekend. Although it is celebrated all over the Spain, the one in Seville is one of the most elaborate ones. It is very normal to experience cultural
shock when living in a different country, but during this week, I experienced one of the greatest cultural shocks. Although I thoroughly enjoyed the
processions and learning about the history and the reasoning behind them, I was shocked to see the costumes of the people who took part in the
religious processions. Samana Santa, known as the Holy Week in English, consists of religious processions every day. It is a time when the devotees
recognize and repent for their wrongdoings, reflecting the fact that Jesus Christ died on the cross to save them. People from various brotherhoods
called the cofradias, participate in the processions. In Seville, there are 55... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After researching and talking to the Sevillanos, I found that the Nazarenos have been dressing like this for more than 500 years, which is well before
KKK originated. There is no defined link between the two, but there is a possibility that one of the KKK members must have witnessed the Samana
Santa parade and gotten inspired by their costume. Unlike KKK, there is a very religious reason behind why the Nazarenos dress up like that. Walking
for about eight hours in the burning sun, while wearing that costume is a sign of penance. They cover their faces in mourning and as a sign that they
are shameful for the sins that they have committed. On the morning of Easter Sunday, they remove their head covers to mark the end of the mourning.
After learning about the reason behind this costume and the tradition associated with it, I think it is shame to associate this sacred event with the

Essay on The Christian Calendar
The Christian Calendar
The festivals dotting the Christian Calendar are marked by general out pourings of devotion, mourning and joy according to the religious significance
of these days. Some common festivals celebrated by Christians are the days commemorating the major Christian events like Christmas for the birth of
Jesus Christ and Easter for his martyrdom and resurrection. Other popular events usually mark the birth or the feast days of famous Saints. These
occasions are celebrated with great enthusiasm; the people observe the time worn customs and traditions associated with each festival, which make

Christmas primarily celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ, the father of the Christian religion. The word Christmas comes from the Old English word –
Cristes Maesse or Christ's Mass. However, the celebrations and customs related to the day have evolved over the years.
Christmas celebrates the birth of Christ, who was believed to be the saviour of mankind. Christmas has always been one of the favourite times of the
year for everyone through out the world. The magical events of Christmas are believed to hold each and everyone's heart with joy and freshness. These
magical events have been recreated in the many traditions followed during Christmas. The Christmas tree, the star, Santa Claus and the ginger bread
man are some traditions that all combine to form the spirit of Christmas.
The traditions of Christmas have been aggregated from over half a dozen cultures and accumulated over the centuries. An in–depth look in into its
tradition, and one is moved with all the sentiments, symbols and meaning associated with Christmas. All of which combine to give a touch of
liveliness and harmony to the season of celebrations. However, no matter which part of the world you are in, the tradition of Christmas blossoms with

Reflection Paper
I saw Jesus for the first time when I was 15 years old. I had been a wreck for weeks, extremely anxious about death, pain and the horrors of life, but
everything changed as I went with my father to an ordinary, boring Lutheran church service on April 2, 2006. I had been in church countless times
before, but I had never actually listened to what they were saying, I was merely sitting in the church pew, wishing I was home playing Super Mario.
Now, I pricked up my ears as I heard that we believe in "the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting", as the Apostles'
Creed says. I thought: "Wait, do we? That's amazing!"
I started to pray and read the Bible, and I just drank the wonderful words of Jesus: "I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will
live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die" (Jn 11:25–26) or "The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it,
and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us." (1 Jn 1:2). However, it didn't take too long before I
started to doubt. How do I know that God even exists? And how do I know that Jesus had better insights in who God is than Muhammad or Buddha?
One evening I simply kneeled down in my room and prayed "God, I want to see You. Show Yourself to me!" I hadn't read the Old Testament
warnings that seeing the Lord will result in sudden death (Ex 19:21), so I prayed passionately about this for over 20

A New Day Of A New Year's Day
New Year's Day/ New Year's Eve Happy New Year Everyone! As we go into 2018, we look to new horizons and opportunities. The best time to start
a new beginning is now. Here in the U.S. we pop the champagne and watch the ball drop; whereas, in England, the first guest after the New Year
brings good fortune. "The English custom for welcoming New Year is full of hospitality and warmth. They believe that the first guest for the year
would bring fortune for them. He should be a male, should enter through the front door and bear some traditional gifts like loaf for the kitchen, drink
for the head of the family and coal to light the fire, otherwise, he is not allowed. They believe that these bring good luck throughout the year." Martyr's
Day–Panama Today is a day of grieving for our fellow co–workers in Panama. The Association of Diplomatic Studies and Training defines Martyr's
Day as "On January 9,1964, grievances between native Panamanians and "Zonians", or Americans residing within the U.S.–controlled Canal Zone,
boiled over into a series of anti–American riots which resulted in an evacuation of the U.S. embassy in Panama City, widespread looting, and dozens
of deaths. Most importantly, this uprising honored annually in Panama as Martyr's Day eventually led to a renegotiation of the original 1903 treaty and
is commonly remembered as the beginning of the end of American hegemony over the Panama Canal Zone." Today we remember the lives lost on this

Passover and Easter Essay
Passover & Easter
Christianity and Judaism are the few examples of religions that are originated from Western Traditions. These religions take different approaches to
representational art and iconography which is found in their religious festivals. The Christian celebration of Easter and the Jewish Passover differentiate
in their approaches to these icons in the history, the celebration and the symbols used during the commemoration of these holidays.
Passover and Easter have many hidden representational art and iconography that are reflected in the historical stories behind Judaism and Christianity.

When Jesus arrived to Golgotha, He was nailed to the cross and soon after dies. The symbol of Jesus' crucifixion is what Christians live by. It
represents Jesus sacrificing his life to save humanity from their evil sins. When He died, He was taken down from the cross and was buried in a
tomb, where He resurrected into Heaven and was seated at the right Hand of God. Jesus' resurrection symbolizes two things. First, it proves to
Christians that Jesus is the Son of God (Curtis). In the Bible, Paul affirmed that Christ is declared to be the Son of God by the resurrection from the
dead (Rom. 1:4). Second, Jesus' resurrection represented an assurance that all of humanity is saved and forgiven for their sins (Curtis).
Passover and Easter also have representational art and iconography that are displayed in how the religious festivals are celebrated by Jewish people
and Christians.
Jewish people celebrate Passover with a ritual dinner called Seder, which represents the meal that the Israelites ate before fleeing Egypt (Oxtoby
123). In a Passover Seder, the head of the family begins the ceremony by sanctifying the holiday with a Qiddush, or benediction, over a cup of wine
(Tobias 88). While reciting a prayer, raw vegetables dipped in vinegar, a shank bone and a hard–boiled egg are presented to the family members. Then,
a second cup of wine is poured and at this time, the Passover liturgy, or Haggadah, begins (Oxtoby 124). The

Patton v. Bellingham 38 P.2d (Sup. Ct. Wash. 1934) Patton operates a barber shop in a hotel where he also works as a barber. Patton's hours of
operations have been the same for several years, 8 am to 8 pm all week. Except for Saturdays when he is open until 9 pm. The city of Bellingham
passed an ordinance limiting hours of operations for barber shops to 8 am through 6 pm, or 7 pm on Saturdays or days before a holiday. Patton kept
his hours of operation the same, despite the new ordinance, as 1/3 of his business is done before or after the ordinance's required times. His

the ordinance does not bear any relation to the health and welfare of the public. It merely seeks to regulate it operating hours. The court argues that
the city's argument does not hold up because the provisions of the ordinance requiring the shops to close at specified hours bear no reasonable

ordinance is interfering with the lawful business of the individual which is in violation of the

Why Do Australia Celebrate Easter Sun Day
"Easter celebrates the promise of life in the face of death." It is a time to reflect on "suffering, injustice, hardship, peace and forgiveness". Christians
in Australia celebrate Easter as the time where Jesus was crucified and then resurrected 2 days after, however non Christians celebrate Easter with
family and friends in many different secular ways. The two main days for all Australians are Good friday and Easter sunday.WhenJesus died on the
cross, his body was put in a tomb sealed by a large stone. The Gospel says that on Easter sunday Jesus' friend Mary went to the tomb and discovered
the stone had been moved and Jesus' body was gone. Christians believe Jesus' Resurrection means that they too, can receive new life after death. Good

The first part of Easter is Lent, a period of about 40 days before Easter Sunday that begins on Ash wednesday. During Lent, Christians prepare for
Easter. They consider it as a time for penance, "a time to show sorrow for sins and to seek forgiveness."2 One common form of penance is fasting,
which limits the kinds or amounts of foods eaten. Holy Week is the final week of Lent which recalls the events before Jesus's death and
resurrection. Palm Sunday is the first day of Holy Week that celebrates the story of Jesus' "triumphant entry into Jerusalem".2 Maundy Thursday,
the day before Good Friday, remembers Jesus's last meal and his imprisonment. On this day Jesus went to pray in the garden of Gethsemane, when
his friend Judas betrayed him and arrived with a group of men with swords who had been sent by the priests to arrest Jesus. Jesus was then
questioned by the council and it was decided he would be crucified. Holy Saturday is essentially a day of "solemn vigil".1 The primary activity of the
day comes at nightfall as the observance of Jesus' Resurrection approaches. Easter Sunday is followed by a 50–day period ending on Pentecost, a
Jewish festival for Christians to commemorate the descent of the Holy Spirit on Jesus Christ's disciples on the seventh Sunday after

The Importance Of Violence In Sunday Bloody Sunday
Evil is extremely apparent in the world today, but for how long will people stand idly by as it continues to worsen? The song "Sunday Bloody
Sunday," written by U2, suggests that the only valid response to the violence that occurred in Northern Ireland in the 1970s is condemnation. The
writers not only condemn the brutality of that time, but, in a broader sense, condemn violence as a whole, showing that there are no positive outcomes
to violence, only more violence. Therefore, people must rise up, united against the violence that exists in this world today.
An important aspect that is important to understand, regarding the theme of "Sunday Bloody Sunday," is the historical context around which it was
written. Although U2 wrote the song specifically about an event that took place on January 30, 1972, or "Bloody Sunday," the violence was a part of
a more complicated and long–running issue between Ireland and England. This violence also took place as a result of a civil rights movement in
Ireland that occurred from 1968 to 1969. Many of these activists looked up to people like Martin Luther King, Jr. for inspiration about peaceful protest.
Nonetheless, in 1969, after multiple occasions of violence at protests, the "British troops assumed riot duty" (Pringle and Larson). This event became
one of the inciting incidents that led to the violence that happened on Bloody Sunday, only a few years later.
The issues with protesting, despite the presence of British troops, did not

My Family
The most important thing for me in my life is my family. Although we are separated during the week, we would hardly see each other. Deep down
they are the reason why I look forward to Fridays and Sundays. These days are not just any ordinary day of the week for me and my family. My two
beloved aunts Maria and Luz come to visit me and my mother, most of the time we go out of town, which makes the rest of the day go by very fast.
Then what we usually do during the week.
Another reason why my family is important to me is because my mother and my aunts are the only family I have. The rest of my family members
live in Mexico. It is not easy to go visit them like I was able to when I was in Mexico. My Mother and I are the only ones that live in Storm Lake, so
it is very hard and stressful sometimes because we really do not see each other due to her working schedule. My mother works from 8:00 AM to
9:00 AM, every week except on Fridays. So during the rest of the week, I feel like I am alone all the time. Every day, I do the same thing, get out
of school and go home. The house would feel so empty and silenced. just me and my soul normally I'm always feeling bored and depressed It's all
that comes to my mind when their is no one to talk to. Mondays for me are the longest I feel that the day won't even end from all the chores I have to
do; taking out the trash , washing the dishes to making dinner. Everything is done so my mother won't have to worry about it.when MY

The Italian Born Community in Australia
The Italian born community is the largest overseas born community in Australia. The majority of Italians came in the 1940s, 50s and 60s. World War
II Italy was in a political and economic mess which motivated many people to come to Australia. This mass exodus from Italy was accelerated by a
bi–lateral agreement between Australia and Italy, which allowed Italians to apply for assisted passage. The majority of Italians migrants to Australia
have come from five major regions: Calabria, Puglia, Campania, Veneto, and Friuli–Venezia Giulia. Today, the Italian community live together in
specific areas. This provides the atmosphere of community closeness and support which is very important to them. The loss of community supporting
structure in Italy was gradually replaced by the development of similar supports in Australia. Today, over 120 Italian associations, organizations and
clubs exist. They range from welfare organizations and religious associations to recreational, sporting and regional clubs. For many Australian Italians
these organizations are meeting places where they can speak their own language/dialect and maintain their cultural identity. The nature of Italian
migration to Australia has meant that over 40 percent of the community are now over 65 years at the 2001 Census. A large percentage of older Italians
do not speak English well and as such community efforts in the recent past have focused on meeting the needs of the aged. Most Italian migrants came

The Importance Of Easter In Spain
People around the world have many cultures and holidays. Everyone celebrates their holidays with traditions that appeal to them. With cultural
difference added, diversity is created and is part of the festivities throughout the world. Spain, for example, is just like any other country with its own
holidays, traditions, and activities. This Spanish–speaking country has those that contrast to the ones here in the United States.
To begin with, Spain has a holiday called Semana Santa, or Holy Week, that lasts for a week. The week before Easter, the regions of the
Spanish–speaking country celebrate the resurrection of Jesus with their own styles and customs. However, according to Miruna Corneanu, the author
of the article "Easter in Spain", "Semana Santa celebrations are nowhere else as elaborate and spectacular as they are in Andalusia...." In this
southern region of the country, the Catholic holiday is honored by with religious fervor, extravagant processions, color, and art. Motley parades and
complex religious displays of biblical scenes take over the streets in Seville and Malaga. In the town of Calanda, people celebrate Good Friday by
playing drums for twenty–four hours. On the contrary, Easter is a holiday those in the United States celebrate. While it may not last for an entire
week but only a day, Easter is not held on an official date, but instead on the first Sunday after the first Full Moon has happened or after the March
equinox. This holiday is honored by Christians,

Examples Of Mercy And Compassion
There are so many ways on how to practice mercy and compassion. There are three simple steps given to us by Pope Francis during his apostolic
visit here in the Philippines on how to become ministers of mercy and compassion. First is to rest with God. Second is to renew one's self. Third is
to love others. Pope Francis tells us that "To be an ambassador for Christ means to invite everyone to a renewed personal encounter with Christ."
(Evangelii Gaudium). A renewed personal encounter with Christ is witnessed when we rest with God. Rest is very crucial to everyone's life. But some
people seldom have time to rest due to hectic schedules and for some students are overflowing homeworks. Rest is very important that even God rested

And also there are people that we love so much but doesn't return our love back. Real love is about loving God, and letting Him love us back.
Another way of practicing mercy and compassion is to love others. Loving others unlike the renewal of one's self focuses on giving love to other
people. Loving others is bringing Jesus to others. Loving others is not just about giving them what they need, it's about teaching them how to provide
for themselves. Let us practice mercy and compassion by resting with God, renewing ourselves, and loving others. During the season of lent we reflect
on the passion, death, and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. Lent is a source of mercy and compassion in a way that we practice fasting and
abstinence and as much as possible drink water. Water has a chemical formula of H2O which means, H for Honesty, H for Humility, for being humble
enough to admit your mistakes, and O for Obedience, for obeying the people in authority like our parents. These 3 are the sources of mercy and
compassion. That's why we should be honest, humble and obedient. Always drink H20 on the season of Lent. The author spent hisholy week in the

Christianity the most Universal Religion
Christianity
Christianity is the most universal religious belief in the world. Christians are divided into three different groups Orthodox (Eastern Countries), Roman
Catholics and protestants (Europe, America, Australia). Also, there are hundreds of smaller groups called denominations. All the different groups don't
follow the same teachings but they all share the same beliefs. Christianity originated in Palestine, a Jewish province of the Roman Empire. The religion
that is now known as christian has now spread all over the world. As converts to Christianity increased, the religion spread. The first century of the era
was a time of suffering, revolution, and instability.
Jesus of Nazareth was a phenomenal person who changed the lives of many. Jesus is the messiah, who brings death on the cross for our salvation
sins. Jesus was born to the mother of Mary in the first century in Palestine. Mary was told by an angel that she would have a son of god. Peter one
of the leaders of the early christians had a vision that a huge piece of cloth was getting let down by the god. The cloth was filled with animals,
reptiles, and birds. Peter went with the messengers to Cornelius house to preach about god. The time period that Moses was born the hebrews in

Customs and courtesies are a big part of the Italian way of life, as is religion. When introduced you should say "good day," followed by a shake of

early, however they allow being a bit late for it is their time you are asking for. It is of great importance for the military to understand these customs

Good Friday and Lent
All About Lent
Q: What is Lent?
A:Historically, Lent is the forty day period before Easter, excluding Sundays, it began on Ash Wednesday and ended on Holy Saturday (the day before
Easter Sunday). In recent years, this has been modified so that it now ends with evening Mass on Holy Thursday, to prepare the way for Triduum.
Q: Why are Sundays excluded from the reckoning of the forty days?
A: Because Sunday is the day on which Christ arose, making it an inappropriate day to fast and mourn our sins. On Sunday we must celebrate
Christ's resurrection for our salvation. It is Friday on which we commemorate his death for our sins. The Sundays of the year are days of celebration
and the Fridays of the year are days of penance.
Q: Why are the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During the rest of the year Catholics in this country are permitted to use a different act of penance on Friday in place of abstinence, though all
Fridays are days of penance on which we are required to do something expressing sorrow for our sins, just as Sundays are holy days on which we are
required to worship and celebrate God's great gift of salvation.
Q: Why are acts of repentance appropriate at this time of year?
A: Because it is the time leading up to the commemoration of Our Lord's death for our sins and the commemoration of his resurrection for our
salvation. It is thus especially appropriate to mourn the sins for which he died. Human have an innate psychological need to mourn tragedies, and
our sins are tragedies of the greatest sort. Due to our fallen nature humans also have a need to have set times in which to engage in behavior (which
is why we have Sundays as a set time to rest and worship, since we would otherwise be likely to forget to devote sufficient time to rest and worship),
it is appropriate to have set times of repentance. Lent is one of those set times.
Q: What are appropriate activities for ordinary days during Lent?
A: Giving up something we enjoy for Lent, doing of physical or spiritual acts of mercy for others, prayer, fasting, abstinence, going to confession, and
other acts expressing repentance in general.
Q: Is the custom of giving up something for Lent mandatory?
A: No. However, it is a salutary custom, and

Being pinched because you forgot to wear green... Firecrackers shooting into the air... Going on a hunt to find eggs with delicious treats
inside...Breaking out the champagne to remember what has happened and welcome the new year. These are images we place inside our head that
remind us of certain holidays. Why do we celebrate the holidays? The United States has a variety of holidays adopted from the traditions of multiple
countries, but some are... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Celebration of St. Patrick's Day was to remember Maewyn Succat, who spread Christianity throughout Ireland. St. Patrick's Day started when a boy,
at age 16, was kidnapped into slavery and brought to Ireland. While there he learned the religion of the Druids. He later escaped, but then later came
back to Ireland because of a supposed vision from God calling him back to Ireland. As soon as he returned, he started telling everyone about Christ,
using their sacred Celtic symbols and turning them into symbols of Christianity. For example, the three leaf clover, which symbolized the balancing of
forces, was used to describe the Trinity. After this event the Irish made Maewyn Succat a bishop and gave him the nameSaint Patrick after his death.
Surprisingly, the celebrating of St. Patrick's Day was not really enforced in Ireland, but was more enforced when Irish emigrated to America. Today
we dye rivers green, have parades, set leprechaun traps, and wear green.
You are going to church to celebrate the risen Savior, decorating eggs beautifully, and searching for those plastic eggs with chocolate inside. Easter is
the first Sunday after the first full moon of spring. This holiday is celebrated to remember how Jesus conquered death and how we will now have
eternal life with God. Furthermore, this holiday is the most important part of the Christian church year, and is observed as an entire season, not a one
day event. Easter happened one Sunday, three days

Jewish Christmas Research Paper

  • 1. Jewish Christmas Research Paper We celebrate Christmas holidays and Easter holidays. However, there is a third holiday, a third observance, a third sacred event that is just as central to our understanding of what it means to be a Christian and what it means to belong to the church. That third event is called Pentecost Sunday. This third great day in the Christian calendar is rooted in the story in Acts 2 and celebrates the day when the Holy Spirit descended on the apostles who were gathered in a room in Jerusalem. Before Pentecost, those men 1. were hiding from the public for fear that what had happened to Jesus might also happen to them. After Pentecost, those frightened men 2. had become suddenly and miraculously equipped and empowered to carry on the ministry Jesus had begun. Pentecost began as and remains one of the major holidays on the Jewish calendar that occurs 50 days after Passover. The word Pentecost literally means "50th or 50th day." For Jews, Pentecost was the time when they celebrated the first harvest of the agricultural year. It was a time when they gave thanks to God for what the land had produced and for what their labor had yielded. 3. For Christians, Pentecost marks the birthday of the Christian church, the day when Peter preached and in response to that sermon there were 3,000 souls converted. ... What appeared to be tongues of fire seemed to settle over the head of each person. They began to speak in other languages, but what they were saying was understood clearly in the native language of each person gathered in Jerusalem that day. You see, the power of Pentecost was not the unknown tongues in which the apostles were speaking. The miracle was that people from every known region of the world were able to understand what was being said in his or her language. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. The Important Beliefs Celebrated at Easter and How They... The Important Beliefs Celebrated at Easter and How They are Celebrated Easter Sunday comes at the end of holy week which consists of many days which have a significant meaning. The six weeks leading up to easter is called lent and this is celebrated by many people giving up one of their luxuries, for example, chocolates and sweets. They do this because they are remembering when jesus was in the desert and was tempted by the devil and how jesus rejected his offer. During the time of lent, comes a day called ash Wednesday which certain churches have the ceremony of putting ash on to the foreheads of people as a symbol of receieving forgiveness. Holy week begins with Palm Sunday, and this remembers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Good Friday remembers how jesus was crucified which is a serious and sombre occasion. It is called Good Friday because people remember how jesus sacrificed his own life to save mankind. The anglican, Roman Catholic and Orthodox churches are stripped of all colourful decorations, crosses, candles and hangings. This is to remind the worshipers of the fact that jesus felt deserted and desolate on the cross. On Good Friday, when people attend the church, the story of The Passion is read, and in some churches the priest will enveil a crucifix and say 'this is the wood of the cross on which the saviour of the world died.' The people will then walk up to the alter to kiss the feet of the carved christ as a mark of respect. Free churches will not have the same ritual, but they will have a service in which the Passion story is read and thanks will be given to Jesus for going on the cross and saving humanity from their sins. Easter Saturday is when Roman Catholic, Orthodox and many Anglican churches keep an easter vigil on the Saturday evening. The congregation gather outside the church where a bonfire is burning. A large candle is brought out, called the Paschal candle. It has a cross on it and the greek letters alpha and omega. The priest places five ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Importance Of Tradition In Shirley Jackson's The Lottery Following Tradition When one thinks of the word tradition, the thought that often comes to mind is a positive one, such as the thought of Christmas dinner at grandma's house or church on Easter Sunday. Most of these traditions we follow blindly, meaning that it is just something we do even if we do not remember why. According to the Merriam–Webster Dictionary, atradition is "an inherited, established, or customary pattern of thought or action" (757). Since it is inherited, we do not really have a say in receiving it or not. It is expected that we continue the tradition because that's what our ancestors have done. While following a long line of tradition can be truly great, when the reason for the tradition becomes blurred it can become harmful. In Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery," blindness can be undesirable when following a tradition and can make that tradition dangerous. My family has many traditions that we practice. As I mentioned before we go to Church on Easter Sunday. Many little details make this tradition the tradition that it is. The whole family gets dressed up in their very best and as a family we go to mass and praise Jesus. After mass, we stay dressed up and meet our relatives at CafГ© 422 for a giant Italian meal. Once we all are too stuffed to take in anymore, we retreat to my aunt's house where we can finally get into comfortable clothing and hang out in the living room usually playing some type of game or watching a movie. For me, I follow this tradition ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Easter Controversy Essay The Easter Controversy Easter is the most important celebration for Christianity because it commemorates the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, a foundational notion upon which the faith is built. Accordingly, it is the principle feast and the high point of the ecclesiastical year, which has been an established tradition as old as Christianity. Easter has been universally observed since the middle of the second century. The original celebration generally consisted of a vigil with readings followed by a feast with the Eucharist. This was a time for rejoicing because the suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus were seen as a saving unit. Christ's transition from death to resurrection, which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By the end of the second century, the majority of the Western churches had come to celebrate the Resurrection on the Sunday that followed the 14th day of the Jewish month Nisan. The Western Asiatic churches commemorated Jesus' death rather than His resurrection and observed it on the 14th day of Nisan, whether that day fell on a Sunday or not. Therefore, what became known as the Easter Controversy was not an argument over the day of Jesus' resurrection, but rather a disagreement over what day was most appropriate to commemorate it annually (Catholic Encyclopedia). The Easter Controversy is the name given to the drawn out dispute in the early Church over the exact date for the celebration of Easter. As previously mentioned, this disagreement originated between the West and East at about the middle of the second century. Basically, what was under concern was whether the Easter celebration must be observed on a Sunday or if it should be celebrated on the 14th day of Nisan, regardless of the day on which this date may fall. This was the day on which the Jews celebrated Passover, which is why the Eastern churches like in Asia felt that since the two festivals were related, it was only fitting to celebrate Easter on that same day. Although these followers claimed to have received this practice from certain Apostles, specifically John and Philip, they were ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I am very comfortable in a Catholic Church and feel very at ease with the atmosphere and rituals performed in a Catholic church. The only time I have ever stepped foot in a church that was not Catholic has only been for a wake or a wedding. So when it comes to experiencing different kinds of cultural and religious practices, I am very naГЇve. Catholic mass is very quiet and serene. We sing the same hymns and keep the decibels very low. Mass always follows the same pattern and it is very structured. Although I feel connected to theCatholic Church, I have stopped attending on a regular basis as I have gotten older. • 10. My Experience Of The Church And My Church My whole life I had been attending church with my family. It was just a regular thing that we did every Sunday and sometimes on Wednesdays. I thought because I had two parents that had been Christians for their whole lives it automatically made me a Christian from the instant I was born. I thought there was no need for me to do the initiation prayer and profess my faith publically, but I was wrong. In the second grade I realized Jesus needed to be something I had to make my own thing and He was something I had to pursue by myself. On Easter Sunday when I was in second grade my church was having something special for the students in first through sixth grade. Everyone in those grades were going to met on the grass behind the church. On the grass was a huge tent where we were going to have our special Easter message. Of course I had already heard the Easter stories multiple times by now and I did not think anything special was going to happen. They gave us the message about how God died on the cross for our sins so we did not have to, then he rose again on the third day. After the message the leaders let us plays some games. I remember one game in which we had to fish for the ducks with magnets and if you fished out the duck with the special sign on the bottom you got a prize. The bombing, later claimed by Taliban affiliate Jamaat–ul–Ahrar, targeted a park populated with Christian women and children celebrating the holiday. Photos of bloody victims and rescuers soon surfaced as well as first–hand accounts of the explosion. The sheer horror and violent nature of the story and the photos as well as the constant international attention on terrorism makes the story impactful and fits with the unfortunately familiar narrative that has developed in the post–9/11 world. The story broke on Easter morning all over the world, and therefore, it fits four of the five criteria that Doris Graber and Johanna Dunaway set in Mass Media and American Politics for how stories are deemed newsworthy (113–114). However, the final criterion, proximity, is the significant in regards to how the Lahore bombing was and continues to be covered in mainstream media. Both National Public Radio (NPR) and Al Jazeera posted articles on Easter Sunday after the bombing, and while many aspects of the articles are the same, there exist key differences. • 13. Essay about The Jesus I Never Knew by Phillip Yancey The Jesus I Never Knew by Phillip Yancey Yancey starts out with the image of Jesus. When he was young he had envisioned Jesus to have angelic features such as, young, handsome, and a compassionate face. It wasn't until he entered into a Christian college, that he was introduced to the real image of Jesus. I had an immediate connection with Yancey. I too had an image of Christ in my head, which consisted of Hollywood portrayals and those in classical paintings. He gives a list, which he got from another writer, on the advantages of being poor. This list really made an impact on me. It showed me how I need to be more open to what God has to say, and not so involved with the materialistic and secular views of today. I need to focus on what God has planned for me, and not make my focus to be what other people think of me. "Strength, good looks, connections, and the competitive instinct may bring a person success in a society like ours, but those very qualities may block entrance to the kingdom of heaven" (Yancey 114). In Jesus' Resurrection, Yancey gives some personal life experience to connect with the reader, and explain the significance of Easter Sunday. He tells the story of how his cat died on Easter Sunday when he was young. It was on this day that Yancey learned what he called "the ugly world," irreversible. Then later on in his life he ends up loosing three friends in one year. All three died in different situations, but it was a difficult time for Yancey. He uses the deaths of his friends as another event that is irreversible. He compares the loss of his cat and friends to the feeling of loss the disciples had when Jesus died. Primarily through the use of symbolism, the poem illustrates the narrator's yearning for the days when he still had faith in his religion. In the beginning, the narrator recounts regrets the presence of "more than a hundred dollars of [cut lilies]" (1). The purple and white flowers cover the room, and the narrator thinks of all the vases he will need for them. The poems shifts to focus on the narrator's memories; reminiscing about the children he used to see at Sevilla's Easter, a celebration in Spain, the narrator recalls how once he ran through marshes with skunk cabbage. The narrator, wanting to relive Easter as he did when he was religious, purchased lilies, associated with the holiday, to celebrate. He describes having these flowers as "pure folly," for he feels foolish for believing that the lilies would somehow inspire the feelings he used to feel on Easter. Since the narrator is no longer religious, the holiday will never make him feel as it once did; nevertheless, the narrator still recalls how he once watched children "cradle / candles that dribbled hot white on their fingers / chanting Latin–just to fashion Sevilla's Easter" (7–9). According to the poem, the sight used to sadden the narrator, but he can no longer feel the same emotion. He also remembers "mucking through streambeds with the skunk cabbage raising / bursting violet spears" (10–11). Asymbol of perseverance and optimism, skunk cabbage holds its shoots upright and ready for the return of spring even as its leaves die in the chill of winter. The Importance Of The Symbol System Of The Msm Liturgy On... 1.0Introduction Ritual can be defined as a religious or solemn ceremony which is made up of a sequence of actions performed in order to achieve a particular outcome. The purpose of this ethnographic report is to examine the effectiveness of the symbol system of the MSM liturgy in terms of the ritual purpose and the extent of the reflection on Christian stories and beliefs of the Easter Triduum. This case study aims to analyse the level of engagement and understanding in the community of the symbol system represented in the MSM liturgy in terms of the Easter Triduum by surveying students and conducting an interview. The symbol system of the MSM liturgy on Holy Thursday was highly effective in engaging the community in a reflection on the Easter Story when the participants came with prior knowledge, as this offered a better understanding and insight to the liturgy which made it easier to follow. The contemporary symbols were engaging and effectively communicated the Easter Story to the whole community, whereas the traditional elements were ineffective in engaging the majority of the members. 2.0Method of Inquiry 2.1Primary Data Primary data was data collected and is evident throughout the report in the form of student surveys (Refer to appendix 1), teacher interviews (Refer to appendix 2), Ms Terrey's address as well as photos and the order of service which was gathered from the liturgy and booklet. As a black child you are raised and expected to have a certain religion and abide by it, but as I got older I became open minded and realized that this "idea" of religion is a hoax and is not real. This one belief and idea that I came across changed how my family will view me for ever , as I walked my journey to a non Christian lifestyle. The beginning of my religious journey or my journey to the truth as I should call it started from my anxious and impatient brother begging me to go to his room to watch a "special video about Christianity. At first I didn't want to go because every time my brother wants to show me something it's usually something dumb and uninteresting to me, but I gave it a try. As soon as I went into the room a young black man appeared on the screen with a black background playing emotionally depressing music. He immediately started asking questions like " Who told you/taught you to believe in Christianity? Why do you ? Why do you put a tree up in your home during the holidays and dye eggs on easter ? My attention immediately drew to him as if he were the ice cream man and I was a hungry five year old child. I had been a wreck for weeks, extremely anxious about death, pain and the horrors of life, but everything changed as I went with my father to an ordinary, boring Lutheran church service on April 2, 2006. I had been in church countless times before, but I had never actually listened to what they were saying, I was merely sitting in the church pew, wishing I was home playing Super Mario. Now, I pricked up my ears as I heard that we believe in "the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting", as the Apostles' Creed says. I thought: "Wait, do we? That's amazing!" I started to pray and read the Bible, and I just drank the wonderful words of Jesus: "I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die" (Jn 11:25–26) or "The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us." (1 Jn 1:2). However, it didn't take too long before I started to doubt. How do I know that God even exists? And how do I know that Jesus had better insights in who God is than Muhammad or Buddha? The Christian celebration of Easter and the Jewish Passover differentiate in their approaches to these icons in the history, the celebration and the symbols used during the commemoration of these holidays. When Jesus arrived to Golgotha, He was nailed to the cross and soon after dies. The symbol of Jesus' crucifixion is what Christians live by. It represents Jesus sacrificing his life to save humanity from their evil sins. When He died, He was taken down from the cross and was buried in a tomb, where He resurrected into Heaven and was seated at the right Hand of God. Jesus' resurrection symbolizes two things. First, it proves to Christians that Jesus is the Son of God (Curtis). In the Bible, Paul affirmed that Christ is declared to be the Son of God by the resurrection from the dead (Rom. 1:4). Second, Jesus' resurrection represented an assurance that all of humanity is saved and forgiven for their sins (Curtis). Passover and Easter also have representational art and iconography that are displayed in how the religious festivals are celebrated by Jewish people and Christians. Jewish people celebrate Passover with a ritual dinner called Seder, which represents the meal that the Israelites ate before fleeing Egypt (Oxtoby 123). In a Passover Seder, the head of the family begins the ceremony by sanctifying the holiday with a Qiddush, or benediction, over a cup of wine (Tobias 88). While reciting a prayer, raw vegetables dipped in vinegar, a shank bone and a hard–boiled egg are presented to the family members. Then, a second cup of wine is poured and at this time, the Passover liturgy, or Haggadah, begins (Oxtoby 124). The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 26. Case Study: Patton V. Bellingham Patton v. Bellingham 38 P.2d (Sup. Ct. Wash. 1934) Patton operates a barber shop in a hotel where he also works as a barber. Patton's hours of operations have been the same for several years, 8 am to 8 pm all week. Except for Saturdays when he is open until 9 pm. The city of Bellingham passed an ordinance limiting hours of operations for barber shops to 8 am through 6 pm, or 7 pm on Saturdays or days before a holiday. Patton kept his hours of operation the same, despite the new ordinance, as 1/3 of his business is done before or after the ordinance's required times. His customers are from all walks of life and the additional hours suit the variety of schedules his customer maintain, enabling them to easily visit his shop for services. The... This authority was granted by the legislature who may grant police powers to cities. The court agreed that barbering is a lawful business and the public must be protected by communicable diseases and unsanitary practices. But, the ordinance does not bear any relation to the health and welfare of the public. It merely seeks to regulate it operating hours. The court argues that the city's argument does not hold up because the provisions of the ordinance requiring the shops to close at specified hours bear no reasonable relation to the public health or general welfare. The ordinance clearly is restricting the barber shops to be opened at specified times and days. The two main days for all Australians are Good friday and Easter sunday.WhenJesus died on the cross, his body was put in a tomb sealed by a large stone. The first part of Easter is Lent, a period of about 40 days before Easter Sunday that begins on Ash wednesday. During Lent, Christians prepare for Easter. They consider it as a time for penance, "a time to show sorrow for sins and to seek forgiveness."2 One common form of penance is fasting, which limits the kinds or amounts of foods eaten. Holy Week is the final week of Lent which recalls the events before Jesus's death and resurrection. Palm Sunday is the first day of Holy Week that celebrates the story of Jesus' "triumphant entry into Jerusalem".2 Maundy Thursday, the day before Good Friday, remembers Jesus's last meal and his imprisonment. On this day Jesus went to pray in the garden of Gethsemane, when his friend Judas betrayed him and arrived with a group of men with swords who had been sent by the priests to arrest Jesus. Jesus was then questioned by the council and it was decided he would be crucified. Holy Saturday is essentially a day of "solemn vigil".1 The primary activity of the day comes at nightfall as the observance of Jesus' Resurrection approaches. Easter Sunday is followed by a 50–day period ending on Pentecost, a Jewish festival for Christians to commemorate the descent of the Holy Spirit on Jesus Christ's disciples on the seventh Sunday after ... • 30. The Importance Of Violence In Sunday Bloody Sunday Evil is extremely apparent in the world today, but for how long will people stand idly by as it continues to worsen? The song "Sunday Bloody Sunday," written by U2, suggests that the only valid response to the violence that occurred in Northern Ireland in the 1970s is condemnation. The writers not only condemn the brutality of that time, but, in a broader sense, condemn violence as a whole, showing that there are no positive outcomes to violence, only more violence. Therefore, people must rise up, united against the violence that exists in this world today. An important aspect that is important to understand, regarding the theme of "Sunday Bloody Sunday," is the historical context around which it was written. Although U2 wrote the song specifically about an event that took place on January 30, 1972, or "Bloody Sunday," the violence was a part of a more complicated and long–running issue between Ireland and England. This violence also took place as a result of a civil rights movement in Ireland that occurred from 1968 to 1969. Many of these activists looked up to people like Martin Luther King, Jr. for inspiration about peaceful protest. Nonetheless, in 1969, after multiple occasions of violence at protests, the "British troops assumed riot duty" (Pringle and Larson). This event became one of the inciting incidents that led to the violence that happened on Bloody Sunday, only a few years later. The issues with protesting, despite the presence of British troops, did not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Deep down they are the reason why I look forward to Fridays and Sundays. These days are not just any ordinary day of the week for me and my family. My two beloved aunts Maria and Luz come to visit me and my mother, most of the time we go out of town, which makes the rest of the day go by very fast. Then what we usually do during the week. With cultural difference added, diversity is created and is part of the festivities throughout the world. Spain, for example, is just like any other country with its own holidays, traditions, and activities. This Spanish–speaking country has those that contrast to the ones here in the United States. To begin with, Spain has a holiday called Semana Santa, or Holy Week, that lasts for a week. The week before Easter, the regions of the Spanish–speaking country celebrate the resurrection of Jesus with their own styles and customs. However, according to Miruna Corneanu, the author of the article "Easter in Spain", "Semana Santa celebrations are nowhere else as elaborate and spectacular as they are in Andalusia...." In this southern region of the country, the Catholic holiday is honored by with religious fervor, extravagant processions, color, and art. Motley parades and complex religious displays of biblical scenes take over the streets in Seville and Malaga. In the town of Calanda, people celebrate Good Friday by playing drums for twenty–four hours. On the contrary, Easter is a holiday those in the United States celebrate. There are three simple steps given to us by Pope Francis during his apostolic visit here in the Philippines on how to become ministers of mercy and compassion. First is to rest with God. Second is to renew one's self. Third is to love others. Pope Francis tells us that "To be an ambassador for Christ means to invite everyone to a renewed personal encounter with Christ." (Evangelii Gaudium). A renewed personal encounter with Christ is witnessed when we rest with God. Rest is very crucial to everyone's life. A:Historically, Lent is the forty day period before Easter, excluding Sundays, it began on Ash Wednesday and ended on Holy Saturday (the day before Easter Sunday). On Sunday we must celebrate Christ's resurrection for our salvation. It is Friday on which we commemorate his death for our sins. The Sundays of the year are days of celebration and the Fridays of the year are days of penance. Q: Why are the ... Q: Why are acts of repentance appropriate at this time of year? A: Because it is the time leading up to the commemoration of Our Lord's death for our sins and the commemoration of his resurrection for our salvation. It is thus especially appropriate to mourn the sins for which he died. Human have an innate psychological need to mourn tragedies, and our sins are tragedies of the greatest sort. Celebration of St. Patrick's Day was to remember Maewyn Succat, who spread Christianity throughout Ireland. St. Patrick's Day started when a boy, at age 16, was kidnapped into slavery and brought to Ireland. While there he learned the religion of the Druids. He later escaped, but then later came back to Ireland because of a supposed vision from God calling him back to Ireland. As soon as he returned, he started telling everyone about Christ, using their sacred Celtic symbols and turning them into symbols of Christianity. For example, the three leaf clover, which symbolized the balancing of forces, was used to describe the Trinity. After this event the Irish made Maewyn Succat a bishop and gave him the nameSaint Patrick after his death.
