AS Media Studies
Evaluation – Question 2

BY MARCUS STANLEY
How does your media product
represent particular social
groups?
SOCIAL GROUPS ARE ALSO KNOWN AS ‘SUB-CULTURES’.
SUB-CULTURES ARE DEFINED BY WHAT A PARTICULAR GROUP OF
YOUNG PEOPLE WEAR AND WHAT TYPE OF LIFESTYLE THEY HAVE
CHOSEN.
EXAMPLES OF SOME SOCIAL GROUPS OR ‘SUB -CULTURES’ ARE
LISTED BELOW.
•
•
•
•
•
•
•

EMOS
GOTHS
INDIES
HIPSTERS
CHAVS
RAVERS
ROCKERS
What are ‘Ravers’?

MY MEDIA PRODUCT CLEARLY REPRESENTS THE ‘RAVERS’
SOCIAL GROUP.
A ‘RAVER’ IS A PERSON WHO HAS AN EXCITING AND
UNINHIBITED SOCIAL LIFE.
A PERSON WHO REGULARLY GOES TO RAVES.
Areas of Society…
THE AREA OF SOCIETY THAT
MY MAGAZINE FOCUSES ON
WILL BE PEOPLE THAT
PARTICIPATE IN THE
FOLLOWING ACTIVITIES…
•
•
•

•
•

ENJOY GOING CLUBBING
ENJOY DRINKING
ENJOY GOING ON
HOLIDAYS WITH THEIR
FRIENDS TO
DESTINATIONS SUCH AS
IBIZA, ZANTE ETC
ENJOY LISTENING TO
DANCE/TRANCE MUSIC
INTERESTED IN NEW
ARTISTS AND TRACKS OF
THE GENRE OF DANCE
AND TRANCE.

A NUMBER OF THESE
FEATURES ARE
REPRESENTED IN THE
COVER LINES.
Race and Ethnicity
IN MY MAGAZINE, I
HAVE INCLUDED
TWO PEOPLE OF
DIFFERENT SKIN
COLOURS AND
ETHNICITY. THIS IS
BECAUSE THE SUBCULTURE THAT IS
OF THE TARGET
AUDIENCE
INCLUDES ALL
ETHNICITIES.
Gender

I HAVE ONLY USED MALES THROUGHOUT MY MAGAZINES.
THIS COULD SUGGEST THAT ONLY MALES WOULD BE
ATTRACTED TO THIS MAGAZINE. HOWEVER, THIS
DOESN’T MEAN THAT FEMALES DO NOT ENJOY DANCE
MUSIC AND WOULDN’T BE ATTRACTED TO THIS
MAGAZINE. THE MALE TO FEMALE RATIO OF PEOPLE
THAT ARE INVOLVED IN THIS SUB-CULTURE IS 50:50.
Social Class
I THINK THE GENERAL SOCIAL CLASS FOR MY TARGET
AUDIENCE IS WORKING CLASS. THIS IS BECAUSE THEY
WOULD BE MOST LIKELY TO BE INTO DANCE AND TRANCE
MUSIC AND THE WHOLE CLUBBING THEME. THE
MAGAZINE IS ALSO CHEAP, THEREFORE AFFORDABLE FOR
THE SOCIAL CLASS ASSOCIATED WITH MY MAGAZINE.
Disability

MY MAGAZINE DIDN’T DEAL WITH THE ISSUE OF
DISABILITY. I ASSUME MANY DISABLED PEOPLE ENJOY
DANCE MUSIC, BUT I DO BELIEVE IT WOULD BE
DIFFICULT FOR DISABLED PEOPLE TO PARTICIPATE IN
ACTIVITIES INVOLVED WITH THE GENRE; SUCH THINGS
AS CLUBBING, FOR EXAMPLE.
