Intimate Relationship in All Quiet on the Western Front by...
"If I were asked what education should give, I would say it should offer breadth of view, ease of understanding, tolerance for others, and a
background from which the mind can explore in any direction... Education should provide the tools for a widening and deepening of life, for
increased appreciation of all one sees and experiences. It should equip a person to live life well, to understand what is happening about him, for to
live life well one must live with awareness." This quote is from Louis L'amour's autobiography, The Education of a Wandering Man. Out of the pieces
of literature read during the English I course, the war novel All Quiet on the Western Front best exemplifies this standard of education. There are

Not only did World War Iresult in severe carnage, it resulted in the mental destruction of the men involved.
When either World War is depicted, the Germans are often displayed as evil, menacing monsters who are out to destroy the heroic Allied forces. As
All Quiet on the Western Front is told from the perspective of a German soldier, there is a refreshing change and blunt honesty that accompanies it.
The main difference the candor provides is that the soldiers do not focus on bravery and heroics, as is common in popularized war media. Rather
Remarque states clearly on the first page, "This book is to be neither an accusation nor a confession, and least of all an adventure, for death is not an
adventure to those who stand face to face with it." Remarque himself was in World War I, and explains that war does not favor the lionhearted over the
meek, they are blown to pieces all the same. Paul mentions that, "While they taught that duty to one's country is the greatest thing, we already knew
that death–throes are stronger." He reflects on how Kantorek and others inspired him with nationalistic ideas, but did not mention the outstanding

The Issue Of Unauthorized Downloading And Piracy
Copyright policies have always been an issue throughout history, with the advancement in technology digital piracy being a fairly new phenomenon
has made it necessary to reevaluate and update copyright policies to the 21st century. When comparing the Canadian and US copy right and piracy
laws it is evident that although there are similarities and differences, the Canadian approach proves to be effective at protecting the owners of the
works in the issue of unauthorized downloading and piracy. It is important to understand what Piracy and copyright laws are, how they effect society
and the artists, to better control the copyright policies.
With an increasingly high number of new technology being invented and innovated so often the issues pertaining to digital piracy are a relatively new
phenomenon. Digital piracy is defined as unauthorized copying of digital software, videos, documents, and audio without permission from or
compensation to the owner of the copyright (Wolfe & Higgins, 2009). While piracy is against the law, it is something many people will commit
without knowing or without an understanding of what they are really doing.
It is argued by some artist that piracy is a current issue, although the use of some piracy can aid their work. Unauthorized downloading can be a form
of word of mouth advertising leading to an increase in digital purchases (Silva & Ramello, 2000). Piracy laws need to adapt to the continuously
advancing and changing technology. Cablevision is

Movie Analysis : The Geek, Society And Breaks Stereotypes
I often associate the word "intellectual" with a very positive and benevolent connotation, but Real Genius has proven to me that being an intellectual
does not automatically preclude someone from moral scrutiny. This 1985 movie captures an alternative view of the "geek" society and breaks
stereotypes with the development of very three dimensional characters. But Real Genius is much more than just a movie that redefines academics, it is
also a film that heavily stresses the importance of morality while promoting a revamped field of the sciences. Although at times very science–centered,
the movie sneakily weaves traces of philosophy into the plot as well. With that said, it seems to me that Real Genius and the lecture on the Two Cultures
have much more in common than meets the eye. The underlying theme of morality drives the plot of Real Genius. Throughout the film, there are
numerous scenes that address the morality of the different characters. Not too long into the film, we are shown that Professor Hathaway has enlisted
the help of Chris Knight and Mitch Taylor to create a 5–megawatt laser. But what we were not told at the time is that the laser is secretly a government
funded project by the Defense Department, and that there was a research grant given to Pacific Tech to aid the project financially. As the plot
progresses, we learn that Jerry Hathaway has embezzled the grant to remodel his house, while leaving the students with a seemingly impossible task. In

An Art Movement And Marcel Duchamp
Dada, be definition, was not an art movement and Marcel Duchamp was by the same definition not an artist. As a man who loved great comedy and
clever wit, Duchamp was a man who loved to take a tradition and challenge others to think beyond it's conventional definition. The Bride Stripped
Bare By Her Bachelors, Even is one of Duchamp's more famous pieces that wholly illustrates the idea that art can be created entirely by accident.
Marcel Duchamp was born in the Upper Normandy region of France to Eugene and Lucie Duchamp on July 28, 1887. His family was an incredibly
cultured one. Aside from the art of painter and engraver Emile Nicolle filling the house, the family enjoyed playing chess, reading books, painting and
making music together. Four out of his seven brothers and sisters actually became successful artists. At 8, Duchamp followed in his brothers' footsteps
and left home to begin schooling at the LycГ©e Pierre–Corneille a school run by Jesuits to educate children of the aristocracy and bourgeoisie.
Duchamp attended the school for eight years where he was locked into an educational routine that focused on intellectual development and academic
excellence. He himself was not a spectacular student but he thoroughly enjoyed mathematics and even won two prizes in the subject. But Duchamp
received the most important prize for a drawing in 1904 at his commencement. He used this moment to validate his decently recent decision to become
an artist

What I Was A Salesman
No sooner then did I arrive home from class, I received a call from what I assumed was a salesman. It was in fact, a salesman, but was for instead
something I had already bought. The call regarded a custom shirt I had ordered online. A T–shirt with a blocky cartoon drawing of Otto von Bismarck
on it. The operator on the phone told me that the company could not print me the shirt because the image was copyright of some artist who sold the
design on another website. I tried explaining that I had taken reference from probably the same image but I had changed it to be another art style. This
however was not good enough for them, and thus had canceled my order.
After spending what felt like an hour scouring Google I finally found the shirt that I was apparently "infringing upon". It was located on an
obviously outdated website and at first displayed no price. After adding it to the cart to see if I could find a checkout price, I was directed to a
page saying the shirts are no longer available as of 2008. If I could not buy one "legally", or "by the rules" what am I to do? As a consumer of the
twenty first century capitalist free market society, there will always be a way to secure merchandise one way or another through relatively easy, and
legal means. Then, the bigger picture hit me. "Why is it that the face of a person of historical significance is copyrighted by someone who makes
t–shirts and then refuses to sell them?".
To me this makes no sense, if he 's not willing to

Limewire: the Rise and Fall of File Sharing
Limewire: The Rise and Fall of File Sharing When I was in middle school, the biggest way to get music for free was a website named Limewire.
Nothing was more exciting than to be able to hear a song on the radio then go home and download it to our desktops. Also cool, was the fact that if
one of us didn't have a song, our friend could simply "burn" it onto a c.d. for us. That was the only way we knew how to get music, aside from
going out and buying the whole album. Apple's iTunes was just starting out and iPods were just being created. Limewire was the way to go. Little did
we know that Limewire was illegal and costing singers, songwriters, labels, and everyone associated with just one song, huge amounts of money.

After the start of the suit in 2006, they launched a paying service named Limewire Store. This pacified some labels but given the overwhelming
number of illegal downloads still happening, the majority of labels didn't seem satisfied. The executives involved in the suit also said that the company
should pay more than 1 billion dollars in damages for their copyright violations. The parties finally reached a settlement of 105 million dollars
distributed to the various companies respectively. While the record companies asked for the maximum penalty of 1.4 billion dollars, they hoped that
the huge victory would show other piracy sites and services that what they're doing is not a game. Illegal downloads hurt the people who have put in
the hard work, day in and day out. The RIAA's chairman, Mitch Bainwol said it best, "As the court heard during the last two weeks, Limewire
wreaked enormous damage on the music community, helping contribute to thousands of lost jobs and few opportunities for aspiring artists." In June of
2011, the RIAA and record companies filed one more motion to permanently shut down the Limewire site and all services connected to it. It injunction
stated that Limewire hadn't changed their illegal practices since the judgement. Judge Wood gave the site 2 weeks rebut the closing and give reason as
to why it should not be shut down. While that was going on,

Abstract
The article examines the significance of realism in the work of Rohinton Mistry, especially in Family Matters (2002). Born in Bombay and emigrating
to Canada in 1975, Mistry is a Canadian novelist who writes generally about the India and of his youth. Through realism, Mistry represents the life with
fidelity. He is a realist in true sense, who has wonderfully articulated realism maintaining situation and language.

Mistry pits the notion of memory against that of history:
Permeating everything, occupying the room as solidly as the furniture, a timeless smell (280).
For Yezad, the same time lessons is present in religion, "which he becomes completely engrossed in at the end of the story" (342). Trauma inhabits
Nariman's sense of time the portraits of his forefather's reprimand him for fondling with a non–parsi girl and demoniacally make the past present in
present.
As they marched down the passageway, Nariman opened his eyes. From his supine position he saw the glum portraits of his fore fathers on the walls.
Strange, how their eyes looked at him as though they were the living and he the dead (89).
Family Matters also challenges the linearity of causality which is intimately linked with reason and individualism. Rational causality is replaced by the
irrationality of coincidence or destiny. Yezad, who is in the beginning of the novel was the incarnation of sovereign undertaking, completely loses the
will to shape his own destiny and become a religious fanatic. In the end, he thinks that "Man proposes, God disposes"

Themes in the History of Communication Design
Exhibition Proposal
Anti–historicism is a self–explanatory term – to overtly oppose and challenge whatever came before. Anti historicism plays a large part in the Dada
movement, an avant–garde movement said to have began in 1916's Zurich out of the negative reaction to World War 1. The war demonstrated that
capitalism had outlived the progressive role it once held and now socialism or barbarism was being offered alternatively. Art also suffered and the
alternative for this appeared to be Dadaism. The movement was ultra–leftist, anti–war, anti–establishment and most relevantly, anti–art.
The Dadaist movement was a direct criticism of traditional artistic values and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first image I propose for the exhibition is of Marcel Duchamp's 1917 'readymade' Fountain.
Fountain is perhaps Duchamp's most famous work and one of the defining pieces of art from the 20th century. In 1917, to have a urinal, lay flat with
only a signature was certainly not considered 'art'. It was the most famous of Duchamp's 'readymades', which took an established functional object and
claimed it as the artist's own, perhaps due to it's controversial nature. 'It epitomises the assault on convention and accepted notions of art for which
Duchamp became known.' (Howarth, 2000)
Duchamp attempted to submit his work to the Society of Independent Artists, an organization that promised that any artist could get their work
exhibited for a fee of $6, and was rejected. 'Signing the urinal "R.Mutt" assured anonymity, and the board took the bait, refusing to exhibit Fountain
on the grounds that it was obscene, was not art, and would bring ridicule on the society.' (Shiner, 2001, p291). This is a perfect example of how
Duchamp challenged and tore apart the conservative views on what art 'should have been' at the time. By submitting a urinal as a piece of work, he
questioned what art was and pushed what it could be. Anti historicism is described as anti–ornament and losing the aesthetic value of

Causes Of Racism In Britain
Another, racist event that is happening in Britain is towards the polish community that live there (Strybel, 2016). According to Strybel (2016), a man
was killed and another three people resulted injured this happened in attacks that took place in the town of Harlow, in the southeastern part of
England. There also have been other attacks that target polish people just because they are seen speaking in polish and graffiti that says polish people
need to go back home (Strybel, 2016). The most common types of racism that polish people face in the United Kingdom are violence, hate crimes,
ethnicity, and not being a citizen (Strybel, 2016). In addition, Strybel (2016) states that although the prime minister, Teresa May regrets the attacks that
are occurring in the United Kingdom towards and has said that authorities would secure the environment for polish people, this has not happened and it
is predicted that polish people might return home if this is keeps continuing. This is one of the consequences that racism can have, polish people might
return back home because they feel like they do not belong and they are not welcomed.
Although, Britain has racist events that occur there are also some anti–racist acts that are happening as well. Andrews (2016), states that the Black
Supplementary School Movement was created as a form of anti–racism which was funded by multiculturalism. The school which is in Britain, shows
students resistance towards racist acts and connect people who are

The Revolutionary Movement Of The Late 19th And Early 20th...
Dadaism, closely followed by the Surrealist Movement, in the late 19th and the early 20th century, signify pivotal periods of artwork. Dadaism arose
after WWI as a result of the nationalism that many people believed led to the war. Influenced by Cubism, Futurism, Constructivism and Expressionism,
it aesthetically it marked 'a mockery of materialistic and nationalistic attitudes'. Challenging conventional art which was meticulously planned and
completed, Dada pieces incorporated the idea of chance, 'making works that often upended bourgeois sensibilities and that generated difficult questions
about society.' Dada artists were well–known for their use of readymade objects which could be bought and adapted into new pieces of artwork, ... Show

'[Surrealist] artists were not overly concerned with aesthetic issues involving line and colour, but instead felt compelled to create what Surrealists
thought of as the "real".' The movements themselves aimed to shock the public as they did not adhere to traditional artistic conventions. Not only was
the abstract nature of the artwork shocking, but the meanings behind it.
My chosen pieces are featured below. They are three very different examples of work, but I will analyse each and explain how they, as parts of these
Movements, aimed to shock the public in its own way.
Francis Picabia was a principle figure of the Dada movement in Paris and New York. He easily shifted between abstraction and figuration at a time
when artists rigidly followed conventions, and this disregard for artistic expectations encouraged some outstanding innovations. He enjoyed producing
work with hidden messages, double meanings, puzzles and in–jokes which perplexed and shocked viewers.
Tristan Tzara's radical ideas thrilled Picabia. He continued his involvement in the Dada movement throughout 1919 in ZГјrich and Paris, before
breaking away from it after developing an interest in Surrealist art. He denounced Dada in 1921 and claimed it had in fact lost its capacity to shock.
Despite this, the Surrealist Movement continued to shock its audience in new ways. Some of the most notable aspects of Picabia's work are his links

Compare And Contrast The Federalist And Anti Federalists
The Federalist and Anti–Federalist
Establishing an effective system of government has proven to be an obstacle for centuries. Fortunately, the Founding Father recognized the common
flaws of governments, as did many common men in the colonies. Consequently, the ratification of the constitution was vital for a healthy governmental
system, though it did bring about much debate and persuasion. There were two main positions which people took during the ratification, those being
the Anti–Federalist and the Federalist. The Anti–Federalist were a diverse assembly involving prominent men such as George Mason and Patrick
Henry, and also the most unlikely of individuals, those being Farmers and shopkeepers. The chief complaint about the Constitution was that it
confiscated the power from the sates, thereby robbing the people of their power. Oppositely, the Federalist believed in removing some control from the
states and imparting that power to the national government, thus making America partially national. Throughout this debate, many letters were shared
between the two sides, and eventually, it led to the federalist winning over the colonies. Despite what both parties believed, many legitimate points
opposing big government existed. During the course of history, it has been proven that a large government has the tendency to become corruptive over
time, thus providing an explanation for the commotion during the ratification. The colonists argued the issues regarding big government while using
historical failures as their basis. They reflected mainly on the ancient Greek and Roman republic, which was rich with ancient tales of tyranny and
destruction. Both of these cities had republics which broadened their conquests to other countries and in repercussion, their governments became the
some of the cruelest and oppressive to ever be. Additionally, even expects had spoken out on the astronomically negative effects that a large republic.
The baron de Montestuieu was a brilliant French philosopher who inspired the colonist with his belief that a larger republic would be composed of
wealthy men who would find happiness by oppressing their fellow citizens. Not only did experts express the promised downfall of

The Legal Regulation Of Printing Press Disrupted The...
Those of us who care about continuing the copyright tradition that regards public access to information as the principal goal of the law are faced with
the hard task of searching for and exploring middle–ground scenarios wherein author/publisher interests in receiving compensation can be balanced
with user/library interests in having access to information on fair and reasonable terms. Finding and implementing such a balance is all the more
challenging in view of the messianic fervor that the Green Paper has engendered in the publishing industry. As we search for middle grounds, it may
help to realize new technologies have been disrupting existing equilibria for centuries, yet balanced solutions have been found before. The printing
press disrupted the equilibrium of its day. When the first legal regulation of printing proved imbalanced, legislative adjustments achieved a public
policy balance that has lasted for a considerable period of time. While the history of copyright reveals many examples of disruptions caused by new
technology and the construction of new balanced equilibria, one relatively recent instructive example is that of the cable television industry. When
cable technology made it possible to transmit television programming to cable subscribers, owners of programming copyrights sought to stop this
retransmission, saying it would be their ruination. Courts, however, found no copyright infringement, saying that passive retransmissions of signals
were not "public

What Are The Pros And Cons Of Federalism
Federalism is restricted that governments decide to take care of the issue of administering substantial populaces and different societies. Federalism lives
up to expectations by separating its power and responsibility, instead of a unitary government, in which the focal government controls everything.
Federalists' convictions could be better portrayed as nationalist. The Federalists were instrumental in 1787 in forming the new US Constitution, which
fortified the national government to the detriment. The Anti–Federalists contradicted the US's ratification Constitution; however they never composed
effectively over each of the thirteen states, thus needed to battle the ratification at each state tradition. Their awesome achievement was in driving...

Another point of preference is that Federalism offers representation to diverse populaces. Nationals of different areas may have diverse yearnings,
ethnicity and take after distinctive societies. The focal government can at times ignore these distinctions and receive policies which take into account
the greater part. This is the place the local government ventures in. Privileges of the minorities are ensured as well. We can abridge the benefits of

The Influence Of Modern Art
Is modern art affecting our American Economy, or any economy for that manner, in a terrible way? After all, these wealthy individuals are spending
their hard earned bills, hundreds upon thousands upon millions of it in some piece of art that doesn't make any sense to anyone but the maker. This
could lead to a huge break, that these supposedly "grimey" buyers are making our economy go down the toilet, and it could be on them. Art in itself is
a very inspiring investment, but the fact that these artists that spit out works that don't put any effort or passion into it are making the green show
more readily than more passionate artists. Modern art sales may be affecting our economy with their meaning leading to quick production, their odd
"cult worship" making it understandable to those who purchase it, inflating their ego so to speak, and the types of sales types where the money goes
and how it is made.
How art these works created so quickly, and what is the norm as far as meaning goes? The whole of Modern art is abstract pieces, meaning art that is
very hard to comprehend as far as the rational mind goes. Bruce Hinrichs, a professor, psychologist, and artist himself at University of Illinois, studied
the ideology and the mind behind Modern Art. Hinrichs claims that "More than any preceding artistic style or aesthetic, Modernism epitomizes the
emergence of a deliberate cultural and social agenda. " (Pg 22). Most of the art is made from Modern idea and events, making them

The Human Being Is The Most Sophisticated Organism On The...
The human being is the most sophisticated organism on the planet. It feeds, cleans, and heals itself. It does have an expiration date however, that
can be hacked or manipulated depending on the way, you as the steward of your body treats it. As I stated the job of the body is to clean and heal
the body to increase the longevity and its quality of life. Now the body heals everything the same way, but its reaction depends on the structure or
organ that becomes injured. For example if your body is cut, it bleeds, this begins the inflammatory process initiated by this "insult or injury" scar
tissue is summoned to the injured area, and new cells replace the damaged tissue and within about 6 weeks the injured area is returned to somewhat
normal, of course depending on the extent of damage. The key is to adopt a more holistic view, rather than focusing on small bits and pieces of your
anatomy. And that includes taking your thoughts and emotions into account as well . The optimum aging scenario, says Andrew Weil MD, a pioneer
in integrative medicine, is to remain as healthy as possible until we approach death, and then rapidly decline: Regardless, your wish to live a long
healthy life. To do this, one must counteract the toxicity being ingested, inhaled, or exposed to the body. For the last 117 years, we have been under
constant assault from environmental toxins, in our food, water, air, etc. Experts are reporting, that Environmental Toxins Are Now a Major Health

Henry VIII's Reformation Essay
Henry VIII's Reformation
In 1529 Henry VIII started to reform the Catholic Church in England, however there are different opinions as to why he began these controversial
changes. The orthodox view concurs that there was a vast anti–clerical feeling in 16th century England; the corrupt church was unpopular with the
masses. However the revisionist view claims that the reformation was actually due to politics. Henry needed a male heir and therefore needed a
divorce. The needs and wants of the masses were not taken into consideration. In this essay I am going to look at England pre–reformation and reach
my own opinion of whether or not England was actually in need of a reformation in 1529. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But were the clergy really that bad, and if they were would people not have done anything about it? In the diocese of Lincoln, which had 1,006
individual parishes, they only had 25 complaints of sexual misconduct for the whole year. This is a low figure, which proves that the deficiencies of the
clergy have either been fiercely exaggerated or that people didn't have a problem with the incidents and therefore didn't report them. The interesting fact
is that after the reformation, the number of complaints rose. Surely this suggests that it was the reformation that caused the anti–clericalism and not the
other way round.
Many laypeople did see the clergy, as greedy and excessive, people were growing discontented with hypocritical clergy such as Wolsey. Wolsey
was 10x richer than his nearest rival even though he was the son of a butcher; many people found this deceitful, after all when ordained he would
have taken a pledge of poverty. He would also have taken a pledge of chastity, yet he had a mistress. Despite his great power within the church, he
actually did very little for the religion. He became a symbol of everything that was wrong with the church and we know that many influential people
didn't like him, such as Thomas Howard. However Wolsey was only one man within the church and many of

The Causes And Uses Of Illegal Music Paragraph?
Illegal Music Paragraph While a portion of people may argue that downloading music illegally is used so that one can transfer music to other devices
to generate profit, an abounding amount of people realize that downloading music is actually used to transfer music to other devices to avoid paying
for additional products (i.e. records, cassette tapes, CDs, etc.). Numerous people claim that people buy CDs just to burn them onto another blank CD to
gain a profit. Journalist Stephen Siegel suggests that mp3's shared through the internet can be used by one who will eventually burn these mp3's onto a
disk and start selling their CDs; this idea is mainly supported by a report from the FBI, stating that "Piracy of copyrighted and trademarked items cost
the U.S. economy tax revenue and jobs due to the manufacture, distribution and sale of counterfeit goods" (Gallagher). This provides information that
shows that the U.S's struggles with distributing jobs because of the theft of trademark products. This can ultimately lead to a ruined economy by
having the U.S become incapable of giving out jobs, considering the fact that the government takes a portion of income from the employee's pocket to
contribute to taxes. Yet, companies adopt certain tactics to gain extra money than they actually need to by making their customers feel identical to
thieves (specifically those ripping mp3's) when these customers listen to music on other devices without having to pay for extra (and unnecessary)

The Model Of Racial Equality
In certainty, the model of racial equality has not always been performed, nor has it been fully accomplished in the world. This is because the
acceptance in racial equality has been said to "counter" deeply rooted beliefs in racial inequality and political, legal, and customary practices of racial
discrimination and oppression. Therefore, racial equality is stated in antiracist philosophy and in antiracist political mobilization.
With this said, as citizens, are we still equal? The answer to that question is "no". The world is living in Orwellian times where citizens are equal,
but some citizens are more equal than others. While some agree, there are many groups that are pushing for reform and equality, such as Take Back
Our Republic, By The People, and Common Cause: Holding Power Accountable. Now that the facts are said, we must ask "how did we become so
unequal?" Over time, big corporations, racial groups, and corruption in government have been advocating inequality for the minority. Some people are
filled with wrong ideas and beliefs that attack those in the minority group, especially people of color. Franklin said, "almost from the beginning of their
national history, people have been relentless, at times ruthless, in their pursuit of equality."
Nearly fifty years ago, Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his "I Have a Dream' speech, a clarion call for the end of racial discrimination in the United

Theu.s. Constitution And The Constitution
The U.S Constitution is one of the most, if not the most, important documents ever written in political history. The constitution established America's
national government and provided the fundamental framework for the present and future legal parameters by which the american people would be
governed by. The Constitution was officially signed September 17, 1787 in Philadelphia during a constitutional convention. In order for the constitution
to actually be an official document, it had to have been ratified meaning that at least nine of the thirteen states present had to approve this document. It
was easy for the first seven voters to make their decisions who were pro–constitution (federalists), but nevertheless, there were people, anti–federalists,
who did not support the constitution. Although they did not want the Articles of Confederation in place, neither did they want to ratify the constitution
because they opposed of having a strong central government. The ratification of the constitution changed the face of the United States and set forth a
model for future documents to come. Federalists fought very hard against their opposing party. Why was it so important to the federalist to get this
constitution ratified? The constitution not only meant something to the federalists, but without this ratification, it could have led to secession, and this
ratification was needed to make improvements to the government. What exactly did the constitution mean for the federalists? The

Social Class And Gender Roles
How are the tensions between social classes and/or genders dramatised in Modern European Drama?
Social class and gender roles, were and still are today, a key element in the progression of theatre. Dada and Futurism, as movements in theatre took
place at the time of the social class war, the prejudice against women and their rights and the struggle to create an equal society. The two movements, of
avant–garde style contained three stage in which they were able to create; 'analysis...engagement...forward vision' (Berghaus, 2005). Their method to
create art and theatre was impelled on by their desire to attack the 'dominant ideology of bourgeois society' (Berghaus, 2005)
'some claim that the word was "discovered" by opening a dictionary at random'(Sawelson–Gorse, 1998)
Dada was a 'crusade in order to win back the promise land of creativity' (Berghaus, 2005). Dada, as a movement, did not only take form of inspiring
art, but it was a protest, to test the bourgeois society. Dada, as movement has a rampant and wild allure about it. The way in which it was
approached and is approached today is similar in a sense of strength and power. In his manifesto Tzara is clear that 'dada was born of a need of
independence' (Tzara, 1918), this does not only imply that there was no independence in terms of art, but also that Constructivism needed to be moved
forward. In Tristen Tzara's Dadaist Manifesto he does not only have a fighting attitude toward Dada, but also has resilient opinion on the

Treatment Of Recurrent Erythema Multiforme
Apremilast for Treatment of Recurrent Erythema Multiforme
Introduction
Recurrent erythema multiforme (EM) is an uncommon skin condition with unclear etiology considered to be a hypersensitivity reaction presenting
commonly in young adults with distinctive targetoid skin lesions with or without mucosal lesions. These cases are typically treated with antiviral
therapies or immunosuppressive agents in more extreme cases. We present a case of recurrent EM in a young adult that resolved completely after
treatment with Otezla (apremilast), an oral medication originally developed for the treatment of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.
Case report
A 21–year–old African American female with a history of recurrent skin lesions on lips, tongue and soft palate for over ten years. She was initially
diagnosed at age 6 with Behcet's syndrome due to presence of recurrent oral and genital ulcers as well as joint pain and swelling. She stated that she has

Movie Analysis : ' Sleigh Bells ' V Demi Lovato Essay
The following case, Miller et al. dba "Sleigh Bells" v Demi Lovato, et al. (2016), was instigated when the band known as Sleigh Bells tweeted in
November 2015 that Demi Lovato's new song, "Stars", had stolen content from two of their songs "Infinity Guitars" and "Riot Rhythm"(Mcir.usc.edu
InPlay). Demi Lovato and her team quickly countered this claim, arguing that none of Sleigh Bells' songs had been used during the making of their
new song. The tweet, in the following August, turned into a lawsuit from Sleigh Bells, against Demi, for copyright infringement (MCIR.usc.edu InPlay).
I am taking the viewpoint of the judge in this discussion, as both their lawyers explain their history in their case. I shall first begin the discussion by
having the band Sleigh Bells' side examined, being the plaintiff in this case, and then Demi Lovato's side will be examined in this case, being the
defendant. Afterward, both alleged songs will be analyzed and compared. From there, my analysis of the will be delivered, similar to the verdict of a
judge in court. Since there was a lawsuit over this song, I thought it appropriate to structure my discussion in this way. Now, we shall begin with Sleigh
Bell's argument.
For the upcoming links, which analyze the history of the band, and also analyzes the song "infinity guitars", I am posting the links here: http:/

Are Food Bloggers An Easy Target For Copyright Infringement?
Are food bloggers an easy target for copyright infringement? Because it is just recipe writing, blogging can someone easily take away our product

Patent Right:
If you create a recipe or introduced a new method of production, or invented a new ring rodent which is substantially different from the prior art, you
can claim patent for the recipe, or if you are introducing a new method in cooking an already well–known dish still you can claim your right over the

Religious Factors Have A Great Deal Of Influence On...
Religious factors have had a great deal of influence on politics in Latin American countries. In most countries religion has helped to set the value
structure of their society by helping to frame what the citizens should expect out of their lives and what they should expect from the government. Today
here are a variety of religions practiced in Latin America including Catholicism, Protestantism, Voodoo, SanterГ
a, Judaism, as well as indigenous
religions. In order to combat religion's influence on Latin American politics the anti–clericalism movement began in colonial times. Anti–clericalism is
defined as the opposition to the clergy for its real or alleged influence in both political and social affairs (Britannica, 2009). It should be noted that
although anti–clericalism is often associated with anti–Catholicism, anti–Christianity, anti–deism, irreligiosity, and atheism they are not the same.
Butler (2009) noted that we could hold the Catholic responsible for encouraging the association between anti–clericalism and anti–Catholicism to their
followers. Secularism is also often associated with anti–clericalism, which rejects all forms of religion in civil affairs. Fallaw (2009) notes that it is hard
to tell where anti–clericalism and secularism began and end. According to Bantjes, 2009 anti–clericalism's target was the privileged status of a clerical
"caste" who are viewed as hypocritical and immoral. Historically religion and politics have been intertwined in government in

Piracy is A Problem, But the Stop Online Piracy Act is Not...
The internet is one of the few things in the world that is truly all over the world. Millions use the internet every day for more reasons than one person
can think of; to connect with family and friends, find information for a research paper, or to achieve the perfect chicken masala recipe. The internet is
made up of a mass expanse of web content and copyright, which is where online piracy comes in. Online piracy is the illegal use or distribution of
copyrighted content, such as music, films, and can even include pharmaceuticals. Millions of dollars are ripped off every year from the illegal
downloading of just music. In the visual that I have included you will see that America tops the list of music illegally downloaded from ... Show more

The terminology of the act is also too broad and general; it would give the government an unreasonable amount of power over the internet. The law
could potentially be manipulated to censor the internet. Those prosecuted for copyright infringement would be given the bare minimum of their due
process rights. Websites could potentially be shut for just mentioning something copyrighted or having a link to the copyrighted content. SOPA will put
enormous pressure on third party websites to police their forums with an intensity that would eventually cause pandemonium. Sophie Stalla–Bourdillon,
a lecturer at the University of Southampton Law School stated in her article about internet intermediaries that "how can one promote freedom of
expression while expecting Internet intermediaries to take the initiative to police their systems or networks and in particular to react upon
infringements of Intellectual Property (IP) rights." Youtube reported that 100 hours of videos are uploaded to their site per minute; That is 144,000
hours of video per day. Youtube would not be able to screen all of these videos equal to the rate that they are getting uploaded. Through DMCA sites

Facts About The Vietnam War
The longest recorded and arguably one of the most controversial wars in American history is the Vietnam war. In 1959, the communist government of
North Vietnam had devised a guerrilla campaign in democratic South Vietnam. The government of North Vietnam had the goal of uniting both
countries under a communist reign. The United States quickly became an ally with South Vietnam because they feared the spread of communism. The
aftermath of the war resulted in sixty thousand American deaths and two million Vietnamese deaths. Today many people question the necessity and
rationality of the war. It is still debated today if the American force in Vietnam was a blunder or a noble cause. As the war raged on there was a rise of

emotions among people towards the draft. It sent a powerful message conveying that sending inexperienced young adults to fight experienced

message to millions that politicians and US military were to blame for the Vietnam War. It also expressed the thoughts of civilians being trapped by
the draft and being forced to go to war. Country Joe and the Fish's song gathered hundreds of thousands at the Woodstock Music Festival and their song
was used as a method of uniting US citizens with the emotional lyrics of their song. It was a way of uniting a large amount people who were unhappy

Types Of Plants : The Truly Soothing Herbs And Essential Oils
Amazing Chamomiles – A Look at These Truly Soothing Herbs and Essential Oils Distinguishing the Chamomiles
There is a special place that I go in my mind. It is the field in front of my grandmother 's house full of chamomile flowers – white petals with yellow
centers and an unmistakable fragrance that permeates the air in the afternoon sun. I used to walk through this thick field and pick the flowers to feed
the obliging horses in the next pasture. What I did not know then but know now is that these chamomile flowers were botanically known as German
chamomile. There are only two–types of plants that are considered true chamomile – German chamomile (Matricaria recutita) and Roman chamomile (
Anthemis nobilis). Both plants are in the Asteraceae family. Although described as similar, their differences are evident morphologically as well as in
their essential oil appearance (more so than in their alcohol extracts or teas). German chamomile is a low growing (up to 0.6 meters) annual herb with
daisy–like flowers on a single stem and native to Europe. Roman chamomile however is a perennial plant growing up to 3 feet tall with daisy–like
flowers on branched stems and also native to Europe (Western Europe).
The chemical profiles of German and Roman chamomile used in aromatherapy are rather different. Matricaria has active ingredients of (–)
alpha–bisabolol, chamazulene and sesquiterpenes (a 15 carbon atom molecule). Within Matricaria itself there are four chemotypes (specific

The Digital Millennium Copyright Act Essay
In our present day in age, technology and the internet has made it very easy to find and obtain music, movies, television shows, and other media forms
without having to pay a fee. In recent years, the music and movie industry, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and the Motion
Picture Association of America (MPAA) initiated a campaign to combat the illegal sharing and downloading of files, songs, and movies. These illegal
files are usually transferred through users and peer–to–peer networks including LimeWire, FrostWire, Bearshare, Kazaa, and most importantly Napster,
which initiated it all. The illegal files are not only limited to music and movies but also various types of pirated software, such as Microsoft Office or
Adobe Photoshop, that are accompanied with serial numbers and instructional manuals. The RIAA and MPAA argued that if an individual exerts much
time, effort, and money into a piece of art or software that they created, they should be thoroughly compensated. Therefore, the Digital Millennium
Copyright Act was created and instituted by the United States Congress to restrict internet piracy by banning the fabrication, allocation, and illegal
distribution of pirated materials. In addition, the DMCA was used to accommodate the constant changes of the growing digital age into current
copyright laws that are usually reserved for books, magazines, or articles. The Digital Millennium Copyright Act is just and protects the rights of the

The rhizome of Picrorhiza kurroa Royle ex Benth, is widely used for the treatment of various inflammatory conditions. In the present study, we have
evaluated the anti–inflammatory and anti–granuloma activity of Picrorhiza kurroa rhizome extract (PKRE) against carrageenan–induced paw edema,
cotton pellet implantation induced granuloma formation and Complete Freund 's Adjuvant (CFA) induced stimulation of peritoneal macrophages in
experimental rats. The anti–inflammatory activity was grossly observed by determining the efficacy to inhibit the increased paw edema volume while

In chronic inflammatory and granulomatous conditions, macrophage dysfunction plays a central role in progression and maintenance of disease like in
case of rheumatoid arthritis where persistent antigen stimulation leads to accumulation of macrophages in the inflamed synovial membrane and at the
cartilage–pannus junction [2]. This is evident by elevated levels of macrophage–derived pro–inflammatory cytokines such as TNF–О±, IL–1ОІ, IL–6
and inflammatory mediators such as COX–2 which has a key role in the maintenance of inflammation by regulating the levels of prostaglandins [3, 4].
Non–steroidal anti–inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and glucocorticoids supplemented with biologics are the conventional drug options for the treatment
of chronic inflammation [5]. In contrast to their efficiency in improving disease conditions, chronic and long–term use of these drugs may lead to
serious adverse effects such as gastric ulceration, bleeding and emergence of opportunistic infection due to immunosupression. In US, more than
16,000 deaths per year have been reported due to gastric ulcers and gastrointestinal bleeding associated with prolonged use of NSAIDs in arthritic
patients [6]. Due to high cost and adverse events associated with conventional treatment, more than 70% of patients with rheumatoid arthritis rely on
complementary and alternative medicine with or without conventional medicine [7].

Art Movement After World War I
According to the Visual Art Encyclopedia, Surrealism sprang up in Paris and became rooted in the avant–garde art world. Surrealism was the
fashionable art movement after World War I. Surrealism is and the last major art movement to be associated with the Ecole de Paris. The writer Andre
Breton (1896–1966), nicknamed "the Pope of Surrealism", was the movement 's founder and chief theorist. He introduced and defined the new style in
his initial 1924 manifesto (Manifeste du Surrealisme) and later in his painting bulletin (Surrealisme et la Peinture). Breton deplored the radical and
destructive character of Dada, nevertheless he built on many Dada ideas to create a movement with a coherent though unbending philosophy. He aimed
at nothing less than a total conversion of the way people thought. Surrealism was less overtly political and advocated a more positive philosophy. The
main focus of the surrealism movement was literature but this rapidly broadened to painting, sculpture and other forms of contemporary visual art.
Surrealist strived to bring forward the imagery of the unconscious mind. Surrealist philosophy believed that nongovernmental and irrational art were
preferable for life and civilization. Surrealism was responsible for a host of incredibly innovative but strange art. Surrealism was meant to free the
unconscious mind from reason. Breton and other surrealists were strongly influenced by the psychological work of Sigmund Freud The term Pop–Art

The Evolution Of The Music Industry
History From the invention of first recording device in 1877 to cassettes to digital recording in 1987 to MP3 in 1990 and to iTunes in 2003, the
music industry has become an important global industry in last 50 years. The evolution of the music industry has given a boom to the economic
activity in many geographical scales. Technological development has been playing an effective role for the evolution of the music industries.
Looking back at the success of these music businesses, it used to be all about fun, dignity, entertainment and business. There were no issues
regarding our social and cultural values nor there were any piracy issues. But gradually with the evolution of the music industry, it has also
challenged our social and cultural boundaries. Current issues and legislation The product of the music industry has also been an effective tool for
communication. It holds the potential to convey an emotion, tell a story or act as a medium for celebration. The impact of music can be felt in almost
every aspect of life, because we listen to it on our daily life. In like manner, music and the music industry also play a significant role in communicating
its social norms. These ideals have challenged political and religious ideologies, social and cultural boundaries, and individual and gender rights. Unlike
the old ethical principles, these days they have regulated their own set of ethical principles in this industry. Nowadays, these business functions through

Music Copyright : An Individual Or Group Of Musical Creators
Music copyright is the right to exclusively reproduce original music or works of an individual or group of musical creators. This right is granted by
the Australian Law. This gives the writer a legal control of his or her original work, meaning, the subject can dictate how it should be used and
distributed. The music author therefore has the right to take legal action upon anyone who uses the work without permission. (Christie 2012 np)
Copyright infringement on the other hand is violation of this patent's right. This right is mainly invaded in two ways, unauthorised download from, an
unlicensed source or, unpermitted distribution of the music to other parties. The latter faces heftier penalties because in the eyes of the law, it is akin
to stealing. (Larsson et.al 2014 p. 17)
A music publisher is an individual or group that works with songwriters and composers to maximise royalties and take a percentage of money accrued
in exchange for services rendered. This is convenient because, a creative may be too busy or may lack the administration know–how to keep a check
on how his or her compositions are used by others. (Panda et.al p.155) It is a win–win business strategy to work with a publisher because they have a
strong commercial incentive to do the best job. In Australia, music publishers are represented by the Australian Music Publishers Association. The role
of a publisher can be summarised as follows:–
Administrative and collection purposes: this entails, collecting

Impact of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act on Copyright Enforcement and Fair Use
Jean–Paul Muyshondt
University of North Carolina Wilmington
Abstract
The Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998 has changed the focus of copyright enforcement away from the act of copyright infringement and toward
the act of circumvention of the technologies used to protect the rights of digital media owners. Additionally, the act has had adverse effects that
outweigh the benefits that it provides.
Key Words: copyright, DMCA, DRM, ethics, fair use, legal/societal impact.
1. Introduction
Prior to the 1990s, United States copyright legislation, like the media that it protected, had remained relatively unchanged. The advancement of digital
technologies, specifically the advent of the Internet and the increasing ability to easily exchange digital media, prompted a change in copyright law.
This change came in the form of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). The act extends the protections given to copyright holders. In order
to provide this additional protection, the DMCA also has adverse effects. This paper will explore copyright law in the United States and discuss the
positive and negative effects of the DMCA, as well as some of the ethical implications associated with it.
2. Background
2.1. Copyright law prior to 1998 and the need for change
Copyright laws in the United States can trace their roots to the Constitution, where Congress was granted the power "To

The Causes Of 'Lisa And American Anti-Intellectualism'
When I was five, I tried to expose the fraud of Santa Claus to my kindergarten class. The teacher asked us to say what we had asked him for for
Christmas and I responded by saying, "Nothing! He's not real!" When my peers questioned me on how I knew this, I informed them it was simply
not possible for a single man to fly around the world in one night. I had looked into it, I knew how many hours were in a night, and there was simply
no way. Despite my in depth research, my classmates dismissed my conclusion, attributing the impossible feat to "magic". They were mad I had tried
to lie to them and I was mad I was surrounded by narrow minded, santa–loving idiots. Luckily, we were able to move past the disagreement and were
all best friends again by lunch. The underlying problem, however, my classmates inability to accept the evidence, has not gone away. In his paper "Lisa
and American Anti–Intellectualism", psychology professor Dr. Aeon J. Skoble explains, the United States has always had a love–hate relationship with
intellectuals. While professors and scientists garner a certain level of respect in this country, there is also a significant amount of contempt held for
those who reside in the "ivory tower of academia", presumably away from the practicalities of real life. This shows a disturbing trend of
anti–intellectualism, or the opposition to intellectual pursuits and works providing progressive and rational thought. The rise of anti–intellectualism in

Summary Of Gerald Graff's 'Hidden Intellectualism'
Although many people would agree that Intellectuals are those who stand out academically, Gerald Graff would think otherwise. "Hidden
Intellectualism" is an essay written by Gerald Graff, where he shares his beliefs about how the educational system is failing to tap those who are doing
academically poor, yet resembles great potential of intellectualism when it comes to their passion or interest. Along with this beliefsPatch Adams is a
movie based on a real story, where Hunter Adams (Patch) who admitted himself on a Psychiatric hospital after trying to commit suicide tries to
redeem himself. After spending a few months in the Psychiatric hospital. Hunter found himself being hopeless by pills and his counselor. It wasn't
until one night he helped his roommate to conquer his fear, by creating a humor game so he can laugh about his own fears. After that night he
realized that he felt extremely happy helping his roommate that he developed a passion for it, decides to leave, and go into medical school. However,
being in a medical school required a lot of focused, attention, and memorization, something that Patch didn't do. For Patch being a doctor required
more than just learning and following rules of a book. His belief was to treat patients in a humanistic way not, comply by the rules of a book.
Gerald Graff's argues that "thinking outside the box" can also be the new intellectual, which is supported by the movie Patch Adams by questioning
whether the educational system is in a

Essay The Avant-Garde Die First
The Avant–Garde Die First
In the 19th century, under the suffocating weight of a centuries long tradition in academic art, artists began to break free. Tired of meaningless
imitation and decoration, the avant–garde artists pushed for drastic revolutions in aesthetic and social taste. This experimentation rapidly grew less and
less controlled, and new technique and new style, which shocked and enraged the critics and public, stopped being experimental and started desiring the
side effects of shock and disgust. There is an error in believing the artist is always ahead of his time, will always be understood in the future, and is a
well–intentioned progressive, because it ignores the present actions and consequences of modern ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Their ideas may have been the first of a radical new tradition, but they weren't the most ostentatious. Later movements like Dada, Surrealism, and art
post–World War II, would more clearly demonstrate the extreme separation the term "
avant–garde" implies.
It is important to reflect on the detachment of art from its former religious manifestations, where the painting was a moving piece of "symbolic
meaning" (Barzun 32). According to Jacques Barzun, a painting connected with the viewer because it reflected some manner of spiritual recognition;
it was the attachment to God or spiritual symbolism that satisfied the patron and provoked emotion, not the piece of art itself. "The Renaissance
glorification of man, the scattering and weakening of the creeds of Protestant Reformation, and the general unbelief caused by the progress of
science" caused art to become an idea into itself (Barzun 33). These modern issues Barzun blames for the rise of art as a religion, with the avant–garde
artists acting as "seer, and prophet bearing revelation" (33).
As Barzun stated, progress in science and technology became gradually more and more important as both were seemingly helping humankind advance
itself (Arnason 46). Artists, no

Summary Of Imagery In All Quiet On The Western Front
Erich Maria Remarque explores the idea that war can destroy a generation of men physically, mentally and emotionally in his anti–war novel titled All
Quiet on the Western Front. The author uses first–person narrative through a young German soldier named Paul Baumer to illustrate the terrorizing and
difficult lives of those who served in World War в…. Baumer is one of the several students who voluntarily join the army along with his classmates,
for they were driven to by their teacher, Kantorek who stresses how it is their duty to protect and fight for their country Germany. Remarque highlights
the fact that Baumer is an inexperienced, innocent, young man who faces the constant struggle of fighting to stay alive at such an early age. In Erich
Maria Remarque's classic anti–war novel, the author uses diction, explicit imagery and first–person narration to illustrate the realistic portrayal of the
horrors of war and argues against its necessity.
Remarque's use of diction creates an honest and very real viewpoint on war, which bolds the anti–war aspect of the novel. Remarque too fought in the
war, so he was very candid with the subject, which is portrayed quite clearly in the novel. In the novel it states, "we were eighteen and had begun to
love life and the world; and we had to shoot it to pieces. The first bomb, the first explosion, burst in our hearts. We are cut off from activity, from
striving, from progress. We believe in such things no longer, we believe in the war" (88).

Richard Graff 's Hidden Intellectualism
Undiscovered Intellectualism:
An Amendment to Hidden Intellectualism In Hidden Intellectualism, Gerald Graff seeks to expose what he believes to be a fundamental issue in
today's schools and colleges. He brings attention to "street smarts", students who are intelligent about so many things in life, yet their potential is
overlooked because the things they are knowledgeable about are not things we associate with educated life such as cars, sports and video games. He
claims that students are more likely to enter the world of academics if they were encouraged to view their interests from an academic perspective
rather than to be forced into subjects that are considered "more academic" by the rest of society. Gerald Graff's main point is that teachers should take
advantage of the interests that students already have and convince them to pursue those interests with "academic eyes", rather than forcing content on
them that they are uninterested in. Although I agree with the first part of Graff's statement, I think a crucial skill to acquire is the ability to find interests
in something outside of subjects we initially find our interests in so that we may develop more as a whole person. Graff refers to his own adolescent
experiences as, claiming that he too was a member of this supposedly anti–intellectual group. As a kid, he hated books and much rather read and
studied sports magazines. He talks about his desires to fit in with the "hoods", lower class "tough" kids

  • 1. Intimate Relationship in All Quiet on the Western Front by... "If I were asked what education should give, I would say it should offer breadth of view, ease of understanding, tolerance for others, and a background from which the mind can explore in any direction... Education should provide the tools for a widening and deepening of life, for increased appreciation of all one sees and experiences. It should equip a person to live life well, to understand what is happening about him, for to live life well one must live with awareness." This quote is from Louis L'amour's autobiography, The Education of a Wandering Man. Out of the pieces of literature read during the English I course, the war novel All Quiet on the Western Front best exemplifies this standard of education. There are various qualities that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Not only did World War Iresult in severe carnage, it resulted in the mental destruction of the men involved. When either World War is depicted, the Germans are often displayed as evil, menacing monsters who are out to destroy the heroic Allied forces. As All Quiet on the Western Front is told from the perspective of a German soldier, there is a refreshing change and blunt honesty that accompanies it. The main difference the candor provides is that the soldiers do not focus on bravery and heroics, as is common in popularized war media. Rather Remarque states clearly on the first page, "This book is to be neither an accusation nor a confession, and least of all an adventure, for death is not an adventure to those who stand face to face with it." Remarque himself was in World War I, and explains that war does not favor the lionhearted over the meek, they are blown to pieces all the same. Paul mentions that, "While they taught that duty to one's country is the greatest thing, we already knew that death–throes are stronger." He reflects on how Kantorek and others inspired him with nationalistic ideas, but did not mention the outstanding suffering and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. The Issue Of Unauthorized Downloading And Piracy Copyright policies have always been an issue throughout history, with the advancement in technology digital piracy being a fairly new phenomenon has made it necessary to reevaluate and update copyright policies to the 21st century. When comparing the Canadian and US copy right and piracy laws it is evident that although there are similarities and differences, the Canadian approach proves to be effective at protecting the owners of the works in the issue of unauthorized downloading and piracy. It is important to understand what Piracy and copyright laws are, how they effect society and the artists, to better control the copyright policies. With an increasingly high number of new technology being invented and innovated so often the issues pertaining to digital piracy are a relatively new phenomenon. Digital piracy is defined as unauthorized copying of digital software, videos, documents, and audio without permission from or compensation to the owner of the copyright (Wolfe & Higgins, 2009). While piracy is against the law, it is something many people will commit without knowing or without an understanding of what they are really doing. It is argued by some artist that piracy is a current issue, although the use of some piracy can aid their work. Unauthorized downloading can be a form of word of mouth advertising leading to an increase in digital purchases (Silva & Ramello, 2000). Piracy laws need to adapt to the continuously advancing and changing technology. Cablevision is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Movie Analysis : The Geek, Society And Breaks Stereotypes I often associate the word "intellectual" with a very positive and benevolent connotation, but Real Genius has proven to me that being an intellectual does not automatically preclude someone from moral scrutiny. This 1985 movie captures an alternative view of the "geek" society and breaks stereotypes with the development of very three dimensional characters. But Real Genius is much more than just a movie that redefines academics, it is also a film that heavily stresses the importance of morality while promoting a revamped field of the sciences. Although at times very science–centered, the movie sneakily weaves traces of philosophy into the plot as well. With that said, it seems to me that Real Genius and the lecture on the Two Cultures have much more in common than meets the eye. The underlying theme of morality drives the plot of Real Genius. Throughout the film, there are numerous scenes that address the morality of the different characters. Not too long into the film, we are shown that Professor Hathaway has enlisted the help of Chris Knight and Mitch Taylor to create a 5–megawatt laser. But what we were not told at the time is that the laser is secretly a government funded project by the Defense Department, and that there was a research grant given to Pacific Tech to aid the project financially. As the plot progresses, we learn that Jerry Hathaway has embezzled the grant to remodel his house, while leaving the students with a seemingly impossible task. In order to ... • 4. An Art Movement And Marcel Duchamp Dada, be definition, was not an art movement and Marcel Duchamp was by the same definition not an artist. As a man who loved great comedy and clever wit, Duchamp was a man who loved to take a tradition and challenge others to think beyond it's conventional definition. The Bride Stripped Bare By Her Bachelors, Even is one of Duchamp's more famous pieces that wholly illustrates the idea that art can be created entirely by accident. Marcel Duchamp was born in the Upper Normandy region of France to Eugene and Lucie Duchamp on July 28, 1887. His family was an incredibly cultured one. Aside from the art of painter and engraver Emile Nicolle filling the house, the family enjoyed playing chess, reading books, painting and making music together. Four out of his seven brothers and sisters actually became successful artists. At 8, Duchamp followed in his brothers' footsteps and left home to begin schooling at the LycГ©e Pierre–Corneille a school run by Jesuits to educate children of the aristocracy and bourgeoisie. Duchamp attended the school for eight years where he was locked into an educational routine that focused on intellectual development and academic excellence. He himself was not a spectacular student but he thoroughly enjoyed mathematics and even won two prizes in the subject. But Duchamp received the most important prize for a drawing in 1904 at his commencement. He used this moment to validate his decently recent decision to become an artist He had learned academic drawing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. What I Was A Salesman No sooner then did I arrive home from class, I received a call from what I assumed was a salesman. It was in fact, a salesman, but was for instead something I had already bought. The call regarded a custom shirt I had ordered online. A T–shirt with a blocky cartoon drawing of Otto von Bismarck on it. The operator on the phone told me that the company could not print me the shirt because the image was copyright of some artist who sold the design on another website. I tried explaining that I had taken reference from probably the same image but I had changed it to be another art style. This however was not good enough for them, and thus had canceled my order. After spending what felt like an hour scouring Google I finally found the shirt that I was apparently "infringing upon". It was located on an obviously outdated website and at first displayed no price. After adding it to the cart to see if I could find a checkout price, I was directed to a page saying the shirts are no longer available as of 2008. If I could not buy one "legally", or "by the rules" what am I to do? As a consumer of the twenty first century capitalist free market society, there will always be a way to secure merchandise one way or another through relatively easy, and legal means. Then, the bigger picture hit me. "Why is it that the face of a person of historical significance is copyrighted by someone who makes t–shirts and then refuses to sell them?". To me this makes no sense, if he 's not willing to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Limewire: the Rise and Fall of File Sharing Limewire: The Rise and Fall of File Sharing When I was in middle school, the biggest way to get music for free was a website named Limewire. Nothing was more exciting than to be able to hear a song on the radio then go home and download it to our desktops. Also cool, was the fact that if one of us didn't have a song, our friend could simply "burn" it onto a c.d. for us. That was the only way we knew how to get music, aside from going out and buying the whole album. Apple's iTunes was just starting out and iPods were just being created. Limewire was the way to go. Little did we know that Limewire was illegal and costing singers, songwriters, labels, and everyone associated with just one song, huge amounts of money. Limewire was... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After the start of the suit in 2006, they launched a paying service named Limewire Store. This pacified some labels but given the overwhelming number of illegal downloads still happening, the majority of labels didn't seem satisfied. The executives involved in the suit also said that the company should pay more than 1 billion dollars in damages for their copyright violations. The parties finally reached a settlement of 105 million dollars distributed to the various companies respectively. While the record companies asked for the maximum penalty of 1.4 billion dollars, they hoped that the huge victory would show other piracy sites and services that what they're doing is not a game. Illegal downloads hurt the people who have put in the hard work, day in and day out. The RIAA's chairman, Mitch Bainwol said it best, "As the court heard during the last two weeks, Limewire wreaked enormous damage on the music community, helping contribute to thousands of lost jobs and few opportunities for aspiring artists." In June of 2011, the RIAA and record companies filed one more motion to permanently shut down the Limewire site and all services connected to it. It injunction stated that Limewire hadn't changed their illegal practices since the judgement. Judge Wood gave the site 2 weeks rebut the closing and give reason as to why it should not be shut down. • 7. Examples Of Realism In Family Matters Realism in Rohinton Mistry Family Matters Rupam Kumari Research Scholar University Department of English B.R.A. Bihar University, Muzaffarpur, Bihar Abstract The article examines the significance of realism in the work of Rohinton Mistry, especially in Family Matters (2002). Born in Bombay and emigrating to Canada in 1975, Mistry is a Canadian novelist who writes generally about the India and of his youth. Through realism, Mistry represents the life with fidelity. He is a realist in true sense, who has wonderfully articulated realism maintaining situation and language. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mistry pits the notion of memory against that of history: Permeating everything, occupying the room as solidly as the furniture, a timeless smell (280). For Yezad, the same time lessons is present in religion, "which he becomes completely engrossed in at the end of the story" (342). Trauma inhabits Nariman's sense of time the portraits of his forefather's reprimand him for fondling with a non–parsi girl and demoniacally make the past present in present. Rational causality is replaced by the irrationality of coincidence or destiny. Yezad, who is in the beginning of the novel was the incarnation of sovereign undertaking, completely loses the will to shape his own destiny and become a religious fanatic. In the end, he thinks that "Man proposes, God disposes"

  • 9. Commentary On The History Of Communication Design HA4103 Image + Text: Themes in the History of Communication Design Exhibition Proposal Anti–historicism is a self–explanatory term – to overtly oppose and challenge whatever came before. Anti historicism plays a large part in the Dada movement, an avant–garde movement said to have began in 1916's Zurich out of the negative reaction to World War 1. The war demonstrated that capitalism had outlived the progressive role it once held and now socialism or barbarism was being offered alternatively. Art also suffered and the alternative for this appeared to be Dadaism. In 1917, to have a urinal, lay flat with only a signature was certainly not considered 'art'. It was the most famous of Duchamp's 'readymades', which took an established functional object and claimed it as the artist's own, perhaps due to it's controversial nature. 'It epitomises the assault on convention and accepted notions of art for which Duchamp became known.' (Howarth, 2000) Duchamp attempted to submit his work to the Society of Independent Artists, an organization that promised that any artist could get their work exhibited for a fee of $6, and was rejected. 'Signing the urinal "R.Mutt" assured anonymity, and the board took the bait, refusing to exhibit Fountain on the grounds that it was obscene, was not art, and would bring ridicule on the society.' (Shiner, 2001, p291). This is a perfect example of how Duchamp challenged and tore apart the conservative views on what art 'should have been' at the time. By submitting a urinal as a piece of work, he questioned what art was and pushed what it could be. Anti historicism is described as anti–ornament and losing the aesthetic value of ... • 10. Causes Of Racism In Britain Another, racist event that is happening in Britain is towards the polish community that live there (Strybel, 2016). According to Strybel (2016), a man was killed and another three people resulted injured this happened in attacks that took place in the town of Harlow, in the southeastern part of England. There also have been other attacks that target polish people just because they are seen speaking in polish and graffiti that says polish people need to go back home (Strybel, 2016). The most common types of racism that polish people face in the United Kingdom are violence, hate crimes, ethnicity, and not being a citizen (Strybel, 2016). In addition, Strybel (2016) states that although the prime minister, Teresa May regrets the attacks that are occurring in the United Kingdom towards and has said that authorities would secure the environment for polish people, this has not happened and it is predicted that polish people might return home if this is keeps continuing. This is one of the consequences that racism can have, polish people might return back home because they feel like they do not belong and they are not welcomed. Although, Britain has racist events that occur there are also some anti–racist acts that are happening as well. Andrews (2016), states that the Black Supplementary School Movement was created as a form of anti–racism which was funded by multiculturalism. • 11. The Revolutionary Movement Of The Late 19th And Early 20th... Dadaism, closely followed by the Surrealist Movement, in the late 19th and the early 20th century, signify pivotal periods of artwork. Dadaism arose after WWI as a result of the nationalism that many people believed led to the war. Influenced by Cubism, Futurism, Constructivism and Expressionism, it aesthetically it marked 'a mockery of materialistic and nationalistic attitudes'. Challenging conventional art which was meticulously planned and completed, Dada pieces incorporated the idea of chance, 'making works that often upended bourgeois sensibilities and that generated difficult questions about society.' '[Surrealist] artists were not overly concerned with aesthetic issues involving line and colour, but instead felt compelled to create what Surrealists thought of as the "real".' The movements themselves aimed to shock the public as they did not adhere to traditional artistic conventions. Not only was the abstract nature of the artwork shocking, but the meanings behind it. My chosen pieces are featured below. They are three very different examples of work, but I will analyse each and explain how they, as parts of these Movements, aimed to shock the public in its own way. Francis Picabia was a principle figure of the Dada movement in Paris and New York. He easily shifted between abstraction and figuration at a time when artists rigidly followed conventions, and this disregard for artistic expectations encouraged some outstanding innovations. He enjoyed producing work with hidden messages, double meanings, puzzles and in–jokes which perplexed and shocked viewers. Tristan Tzara's radical ideas thrilled Picabia. He continued his involvement in the Dada movement throughout 1919 in ZГјrich and Paris, before breaking away from it after developing an interest in Surrealist art. He denounced Dada in 1921 and claimed it had in fact lost its capacity to shock. Despite this, the Surrealist Movement continued to shock its audience in new ways. • 12. Compare And Contrast The Federalist And Anti Federalists The Federalist and Anti–Federalist Establishing an effective system of government has proven to be an obstacle for centuries. Fortunately, the Founding Father recognized the common flaws of governments, as did many common men in the colonies. Consequently, the ratification of the constitution was vital for a healthy governmental system, though it did bring about much debate and persuasion. There were two main positions which people took during the ratification, those being the Anti–Federalist and the Federalist. The Anti–Federalist were a diverse assembly involving prominent men such as George Mason and Patrick Henry, and also the most unlikely of individuals, those being Farmers and shopkeepers. The chief complaint about the Constitution was that it confiscated the power from the sates, thereby robbing the people of their power. Oppositely, the Federalist believed in removing some control from the states and imparting that power to the national government, thus making America partially national. Throughout this debate, many letters were shared between the two sides, and eventually, it led to the federalist winning over the colonies. Despite what both parties believed, many legitimate points opposing big government existed. During the course of history, it has been proven that a large government has the tendency to become corruptive over time, thus providing an explanation for the commotion during the ratification. The colonists argued the issues regarding big government while using historical failures as their basis. They reflected mainly on the ancient Greek and Roman republic, which was rich with ancient tales of tyranny and destruction. Both of these cities had republics which broadened their conquests to other countries and in repercussion, their governments became the some of the cruelest and oppressive to ever be. Additionally, even expects had spoken out on the astronomically negative effects that a large republic. • 13. The Legal Regulation Of Printing Press Disrupted The... Those of us who care about continuing the copyright tradition that regards public access to information as the principal goal of the law are faced with the hard task of searching for and exploring middle–ground scenarios wherein author/publisher interests in receiving compensation can be balanced with user/library interests in having access to information on fair and reasonable terms. Finding and implementing such a balance is all the more challenging in view of the messianic fervor that the Green Paper has engendered in the publishing industry. As we search for middle grounds, it may help to realize new technologies have been disrupting existing equilibria for centuries, yet balanced solutions have been found before. The printing press disrupted the equilibrium of its day. When the first legal regulation of printing proved imbalanced, legislative adjustments achieved a public policy balance that has lasted for a considerable period of time. While the history of copyright reveals many examples of disruptions caused by new technology and the construction of new balanced equilibria, one relatively recent instructive example is that of the cable television industry. When cable technology made it possible to transmit television programming to cable subscribers, owners of programming copyrights sought to stop this retransmission, saying it would be their ruination. Courts, however, found no copyright infringement, saying that passive retransmissions of signals were not "public ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Federalism lives up to expectations by separating its power and responsibility, instead of a unitary government, in which the focal government controls everything. The Federalists were instrumental in 1787 in forming the new US Constitution, which fortified the national government to the detriment. • 15. The Influence Of Modern Art Is modern art affecting our American Economy, or any economy for that manner, in a terrible way? After all, these wealthy individuals are spending their hard earned bills, hundreds upon thousands upon millions of it in some piece of art that doesn't make any sense to anyone but the maker. This could lead to a huge break, that these supposedly "grimey" buyers are making our economy go down the toilet, and it could be on them. Art in itself is a very inspiring investment, but the fact that these artists that spit out works that don't put any effort or passion into it are making the green show more readily than more passionate artists. Modern art sales may be affecting our economy with their meaning leading to quick production, their odd "cult worship" making it understandable to those who purchase it, inflating their ego so to speak, and the types of sales types where the money goes and how it is made. How art these works created so quickly, and what is the norm as far as meaning goes? The whole of Modern art is abstract pieces, meaning art that is very hard to comprehend as far as the rational mind goes. Bruce Hinrichs, a professor, psychologist, and artist himself at University of Illinois, studied the ideology and the mind behind Modern Art. Hinrichs claims that "More than any preceding artistic style or aesthetic, Modernism epitomizes the emergence of a deliberate cultural and social agenda. " (Pg 22). It does have an expiration date however, that can be hacked or manipulated depending on the way, you as the steward of your body treats it. As I stated the job of the body is to clean and heal the body to increase the longevity and its quality of life. Now the body heals everything the same way, but its reaction depends on the structure or organ that becomes injured. For example if your body is cut, it bleeds, this begins the inflammatory process initiated by this "insult or injury" scar tissue is summoned to the injured area, and new cells replace the damaged tissue and within about 6 weeks the injured area is returned to somewhat normal, of course depending on the extent of damage. The key is to adopt a more holistic view, rather than focusing on small bits and pieces of your anatomy. And that includes taking your thoughts and emotions into account as well . The optimum aging scenario, says Andrew Weil MD, a pioneer in integrative medicine, is to remain as healthy as possible until we approach death, and then rapidly decline: Regardless, your wish to live a long healthy life. To do this, one must counteract the toxicity being ingested, inhaled, or exposed to the body. • 17. Henry VIII's Reformation Essay Henry VIII's Reformation In 1529 Henry VIII started to reform the Catholic Church in England, however there are different opinions as to why he began these controversial changes. The orthodox view concurs that there was a vast anti–clerical feeling in 16th century England; the corrupt church was unpopular with the masses. However the revisionist view claims that the reformation was actually due to politics. Henry needed a male heir and therefore needed a divorce. The needs and wants of the masses were not taken into consideration. In this essay I am going to look at England pre–reformation and reach my own opinion of whether or not England was actually in need of a reformation in 1529. ... In the diocese of Lincoln, which had 1,006 individual parishes, they only had 25 complaints of sexual misconduct for the whole year. This is a low figure, which proves that the deficiencies of the clergy have either been fiercely exaggerated or that people didn't have a problem with the incidents and therefore didn't report them. The interesting fact is that after the reformation, the number of complaints rose. Surely this suggests that it was the reformation that caused the anti–clericalism and not the other way round. Many laypeople did see the clergy, as greedy and excessive, people were growing discontented with hypocritical clergy such as Wolsey. Wolsey was 10x richer than his nearest rival even though he was the son of a butcher; many people found this deceitful, after all when ordained he would have taken a pledge of poverty. He would also have taken a pledge of chastity, yet he had a mistress. Despite his great power within the church, he actually did very little for the religion. Numerous people claim that people buy CDs just to burn them onto another blank CD to gain a profit. Journalist Stephen Siegel suggests that mp3's shared through the internet can be used by one who will eventually burn these mp3's onto a disk and start selling their CDs; this idea is mainly supported by a report from the FBI, stating that "Piracy of copyrighted and trademarked items cost the U.S. economy tax revenue and jobs due to the manufacture, distribution and sale of counterfeit goods" (Gallagher). This provides information that shows that the U.S's struggles with distributing jobs because of the theft of trademark products. This is because the acceptance in racial equality has been said to "counter" deeply rooted beliefs in racial inequality and political, legal, and customary practices of racial discrimination and oppression. Therefore, racial equality is stated in antiracist philosophy and in antiracist political mobilization. With this said, as citizens, are we still equal? The answer to that question is "no". The world is living in Orwellian times where citizens are equal, but some citizens are more equal than others. While some agree, there are many groups that are pushing for reform and equality, such as Take Back Our Republic, By The People, and Common Cause: Holding Power Accountable. Now that the facts are said, we must ask "how did we become so unequal?" Over time, big corporations, racial groups, and corruption in government have been advocating inequality for the minority. Some people are filled with wrong ideas and beliefs that attack those in the minority group, especially people of color. Franklin said, "almost from the beginning of their national history, people have been relentless, at times ruthless, in their pursuit of equality." The constitution established America's national government and provided the fundamental framework for the present and future legal parameters by which the american people would be governed by. The Constitution was officially signed September 17, 1787 in Philadelphia during a constitutional convention. In order for the constitution to actually be an official document, it had to have been ratified meaning that at least nine of the thirteen states present had to approve this document. It was easy for the first seven voters to make their decisions who were pro–constitution (federalists), but nevertheless, there were people, anti–federalists, who did not support the constitution. Although they did not want the Articles of Confederation in place, neither did they want to ratify the constitution because they opposed of having a strong central government. The ratification of the constitution changed the face of the United States and set forth a model for future documents to come. Federalists fought very hard against their opposing party. Why was it so important to the federalist to get this constitution ratified? In most countries religion has helped to set the value structure of their society by helping to frame what the citizens should expect out of their lives and what they should expect from the government. Today here are a variety of religions practiced in Latin America including Catholicism, Protestantism, Voodoo, SanterГ a, Judaism, as well as indigenous religions. In order to combat religion's influence on Latin American politics the anti–clericalism movement began in colonial times. Anti–clericalism is defined as the opposition to the clergy for its real or alleged influence in both political and social affairs (Britannica, 2009). It should be noted that although anti–clericalism is often associated with anti–Catholicism, anti–Christianity, anti–deism, irreligiosity, and atheism they are not the same. Butler (2009) noted that we could hold the Catholic responsible for encouraging the association between anti–clericalism and anti–Catholicism to their followers. Secularism is also often associated with anti–clericalism, which rejects all forms of religion in civil affairs. Fallaw (2009) notes that it is hard to tell where anti–clericalism and secularism began and end. It is the field in front of my grandmother 's house full of chamomile flowers – white petals with yellow centers and an unmistakable fragrance that permeates the air in the afternoon sun. I used to walk through this thick field and pick the flowers to feed the obliging horses in the next pasture. What I did not know then but know now is that these chamomile flowers were botanically known as German chamomile. There are only two–types of plants that are considered true chamomile – German chamomile (Matricaria recutita) and Roman chamomile ( Anthemis nobilis). Both plants are in the Asteraceae family. Although described as similar, their differences are evident morphologically as well as in their essential oil appearance (more so than in their alcohol extracts or teas). German chamomile is a low growing (up to 0.6 meters) annual herb with daisy–like flowers on a single stem and native to Europe. Roman chamomile however is a perennial plant growing up to 3 feet tall with daisy–like flowers on branched stems and also native to Europe (Western Europe). The Digital Millennium Copyright Act Essay In our present day in age, technology and the internet has made it very easy to find and obtain music, movies, television shows, and other media forms without having to pay a fee. In recent years, the music and movie industry, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) initiated a campaign to combat the illegal sharing and downloading of files, songs, and movies. These illegal files are usually transferred through users and peer–to–peer networks including LimeWire, FrostWire, Bearshare, Kazaa, and most importantly Napster, which initiated it all. The illegal files are not only limited to music and movies but also various types of pirated software, such as Microsoft Office or Adobe Photoshop, that are accompanied with serial numbers and instructional manuals. The RIAA and MPAA argued that if an individual exerts much time, effort, and money into a piece of art or software that they created, they should be thoroughly compensated. Therefore, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act was created and instituted by the United States Congress to restrict internet piracy by banning the fabrication, allocation, and illegal distribution of pirated materials. Surrealism was the fashionable art movement after World War I. Surrealism is and the last major art movement to be associated with the Ecole de Paris. The writer Andre Breton (1896–1966), nicknamed "the Pope of Surrealism", was the movement 's founder and chief theorist. He introduced and defined the new style in his initial 1924 manifesto (Manifeste du Surrealisme) and later in his painting bulletin (Surrealisme et la Peinture). Breton deplored the radical and destructive character of Dada, nevertheless he built on many Dada ideas to create a movement with a coherent though unbending philosophy. He aimed at nothing less than a total conversion of the way people thought. Surrealism was less overtly political and advocated a more positive philosophy. The main focus of the surrealism movement was literature but this rapidly broadened to painting, sculpture and other forms of contemporary visual art. Surrealist strived to bring forward the imagery of the unconscious mind. Surrealist philosophy believed that nongovernmental and irrational art were preferable for life and civilization. This right is granted by the Australian Law. This gives the writer a legal control of his or her original work, meaning, the subject can dictate how it should be used and distributed. The music author therefore has the right to take legal action upon anyone who uses the work without permission. Introduction Prior to the 1990s, United States copyright legislation, like the media that it protected, had remained relatively unchanged. The advancement of digital technologies, specifically the advent of the Internet and the increasing ability to easily exchange digital media, prompted a change in copyright law. This change came in the form of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). The act extends the protections given to copyright holders. In order to provide this additional protection, the DMCA also has adverse effects. This paper will explore copyright law in the United States and discuss the positive and negative effects of the DMCA, as well as some of the ethical implications associated with it. 2. Background 2.1. Copyright law prior to 1998 and the need for change Copyright laws in the United States can trace their roots to the Constitution, where Congress was granted the power "To

  • 36. The Causes Of 'Lisa And American Anti-Intellectualism' When I was five, I tried to expose the fraud of Santa Claus to my kindergarten class. The teacher asked us to say what we had asked him for for Christmas and I responded by saying, "Nothing! He's not real!" When my peers questioned me on how I knew this, I informed them it was simply not possible for a single man to fly around the world in one night. I had looked into it, I knew how many hours were in a night, and there was simply no way. Despite my in depth research, my classmates dismissed my conclusion, attributing the impossible feat to "magic". They were mad I had tried to lie to them and I was mad I was surrounded by narrow minded, santa–loving idiots. Luckily, we were able to move past the disagreement and were all best friends again by lunch. The underlying problem, however, my classmates inability to accept the evidence, has not gone away. In his paper "Lisa and American Anti–Intellectualism", psychology professor Dr. Aeon J. Skoble explains, the United States has always had a love–hate relationship with intellectuals. While professors and scientists garner a certain level of respect in this country, there is also a significant amount of contempt held for those who reside in the "ivory tower of academia", presumably away from the practicalities of real life. This shows a disturbing trend of anti–intellectualism, or the opposition to intellectual pursuits and works providing progressive and rational thought. • 37. Summary Of Gerald Graff's 'Hidden Intellectualism' Although many people would agree that Intellectuals are those who stand out academically, Gerald Graff would think otherwise. "Hidden Intellectualism" is an essay written by Gerald Graff, where he shares his beliefs about how the educational system is failing to tap those who are doing academically poor, yet resembles great potential of intellectualism when it comes to their passion or interest. Along with this beliefsPatch Adams is a movie based on a real story, where Hunter Adams (Patch) who admitted himself on a Psychiatric hospital after trying to commit suicide tries to redeem himself. After spending a few months in the Psychiatric hospital. Hunter found himself being hopeless by pills and his counselor. It wasn't until one night he helped his roommate to conquer his fear, by creating a humor game so he can laugh about his own fears. After that night he realized that he felt extremely happy helping his roommate that he developed a passion for it, decides to leave, and go into medical school. However, being in a medical school required a lot of focused, attention, and memorization, something that Patch didn't do. For Patch being a doctor required more than just learning and following rules of a book. His belief was to treat patients in a humanistic way not, comply by the rules of a book. Gerald Graff's argues that "thinking outside the box" can also be the new intellectual, which is supported by the movie Patch Adams by questioning whether the educational system is in a ... • 38. Essay The Avant-Garde Die First The Avant–Garde Die First In the 19th century, under the suffocating weight of a centuries long tradition in academic art, artists began to break free. Tired of meaningless imitation and decoration, the avant–garde artists pushed for drastic revolutions in aesthetic and social taste. This experimentation rapidly grew less and less controlled, and new technique and new style, which shocked and enraged the critics and public, stopped being experimental and started desiring the side effects of shock and disgust. There is an error in believing the artist is always ahead of his time, will always be understood in the future, and is a well–intentioned progressive, because it ignores the present actions and consequences of modern ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Their ideas may have been the first of a radical new tradition, but they weren't the most ostentatious. Later movements like Dada, Surrealism, and art post–World War II, would more clearly demonstrate the extreme separation the term " avant–garde" implies. It is important to reflect on the detachment of art from its former religious manifestations, where the painting was a moving piece of "symbolic meaning" (Barzun 32). According to Jacques Barzun, a painting connected with the viewer because it reflected some manner of spiritual recognition; it was the attachment to God or spiritual symbolism that satisfied the patron and provoked emotion, not the piece of art itself. "The Renaissance glorification of man, the scattering and weakening of the creeds of Protestant Reformation, and the general unbelief caused by the progress of science" caused art to become an idea into itself (Barzun 33). These modern issues Barzun blames for the rise of art as a religion, with the avant–garde artists acting as "seer, and prophet bearing revelation" (33). As Barzun stated, progress in science and technology became gradually more and more important as both were seemingly helping humankind advance itself (Arnason 46). Artists, no ... • 39. Summary Of Imagery In All Quiet On The Western Front Erich Maria Remarque explores the idea that war can destroy a generation of men physically, mentally and emotionally in his anti–war novel titled All Quiet on the Western Front. The author uses first–person narrative through a young German soldier named Paul Baumer to illustrate the terrorizing and difficult lives of those who served in World War в…. Baumer is one of the several students who voluntarily join the army along with his classmates, for they were driven to by their teacher, Kantorek who stresses how it is their duty to protect and fight for their country Germany. Remarque highlights the fact that Baumer is an inexperienced, innocent, young man who faces the constant struggle of fighting to stay alive at such an early age. In Erich Maria Remarque's classic anti–war novel, the author uses diction, explicit imagery and first–person narration to illustrate the realistic portrayal of the horrors of war and argues against its necessity. Remarque's use of diction creates an honest and very real viewpoint on war, which bolds the anti–war aspect of the novel. Remarque too fought in the war, so he was very candid with the subject, which is portrayed quite clearly in the novel. In the novel it states, "we were eighteen and had begun to love life and the world; and we had to shoot it to pieces. The first bomb, the first explosion, burst in our hearts. We are cut off from activity, from striving, from progress. We believe in such things no longer, we believe in the war" (88). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Richard Graff 's Hidden Intellectualism Undiscovered Intellectualism: An Amendment to Hidden Intellectualism In Hidden Intellectualism, Gerald Graff seeks to expose what he believes to be a fundamental issue in today's schools and colleges. He brings attention to "street smarts", students who are intelligent about so many things in life, yet their potential is overlooked because the things they are knowledgeable about are not things we associate with educated life such as cars, sports and video games. He claims that students are more likely to enter the world of academics if they were encouraged to view their interests from an academic perspective rather than to be forced into subjects that are considered "more academic" by the rest of society. Gerald Graff's main point is that teachers should take advantage of the interests that students already have and convince them to pursue those interests with "academic eyes", rather than forcing content on them that they are uninterested in. Although I agree with the first part of Graff's statement, I think a crucial skill to acquire is the ability to find interests in something outside of subjects we initially find our interests in so that we may develop more as a whole person. Graff refers to his own adolescent experiences as, claiming that he too was a member of this supposedly anti–intellectual group. As a kid, he hated books and much rather read and studied sports magazines. He talks about his desires to fit in with the "hoods", lower class "tough" kids ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
