The Gilded Age And The Gilded Age
Both books look at the Gilded Age in different perspectives as to how it affected the USA. A
People's History of the United States talks about how the people rebelled for their rights as working
citizens, showing a in–depth view in how the American people lived during this time. A Patriot's
History of the United States takes a broad approach, just stating the facts and telling from a political
view in what was happening in the government. Even though both books talk from different
perspectives, these authors hit some touchy details that they share similar or different views on. In
this case, A Patriot's History of the United States does a better job at dealing with these topics
because even though broad, the author shows the logic behind the decisions made. Even though
these two novels have different perspectives of what was going on during the Gilded Age, they both
talk about the effectiveness of the unions, the conditions in which the workers were in, and the
struggles of the daily people trying to survive. One of the major things to come out of the 19th
century were the formation of labor unions as it was a response to social and economic changes of
the industrial revolution. One of the major unions the books talked about was the Knights of Labor,
an organization made to find fairness in the workplace. However, they only supported white
fairness, which made them unliked. Furthermore, they were not the only unions formed during this
time. The Western

The Social Impact Of Industrialization In The United States
Industrialization started because of new inventions, cheap labor, technology, and a plethora of raw
materials. Industrialization led to the rise of labor unions and separation by classes socially. The
culture of the United States changed drastically because of immigrants coming to America.
Industrialization affected the economy because of industries growing fast and creating more jobs
than ever before. The rise of industry brought about many innovations that forever changed the
United States. The social impact of industrialization led to the the emergence of labor unions and the
separation of classes in cities. The american federation of labor was one of the first trade unions that
prospered. The leader was samuel gompers and he wanted unions to become accepted into american
society. He thought that the AFL (american federation of labor) should work for the small gains such
as higher wages and better working conditions. Gompers had three main goals for the AFL. He
wanted to convince companies to recognize unions. He pushed for closed shops which meant
companies could only hire union members and an eight–hour work day. The Women's Trade Union
League or WTUL was the first national association dedicated to advocare women's labor issues.
WTUL wanted in eight–hour work day, creation of minimum wage, no more evening work for
women, and the abolition of child labor. These unions helped create better working conditions for
people in years to come. When cities grew wealthy people, the middle class, and the working class
lived in different neighborhoods. The growth of cities was so fast that crime, violence, fire, disease,
and pollution became a big issue. The crowded urban areas are where criminals thrived. The
industrialization movement affected social conditions in the United States....
Industrialization had a major impact on the United States culture. The many jobs available led to a
rush of immigration. This led people to have feelings of nativism which is an extreme dislike for
immigrants by native–born people and they wanted to limit immigration. A major anti–immigrant
organization in the Northeast and Midwest was called the American Protective Association and they
strongly disliked foreigners and Catholics and

Technology And New Technology : S. Robber Barons
Elis Guevara Lemeland Per 1. EQ#9 Dec. 29 New Technology: In the 1800's after the civil war,
people began investing and creating new technology to fill the gap of economic prosperity that
slaves gave them. New technology consisted of new energy, transportation, and communication. D.
New technology in the second half of the 1800's consisted of lighting, oil, communication, and the
railroad system. Inventors had increasing productivity because if they made a new invention they
could patent it and then make more money on it. Railroads are really the heart of industrialization
because the railroad system led to faster industrialization, communication, and transportation. S. The
new technology of the 1800's led to rapid industrialization which would lead to factories being built
quickly. Factories would then lead to growing cities, and economic prosperity. The new technology
was also a symbol of american prosperity. 2. Robber Barons: Robber Barons is a phrase used by
historians that describes industrialists in the late 1800's. A Robber Baron is a powerful industrialist.
D. Robber Barons are industrialists who established large businesses during the industrialization era.
This nickname however suggests that these industrialists made their fortune by stealing from the
people. Historians say that they use all the natural resources and coerce politicians to act in their
favour. S. Robber Barons were so selfish that their workers would be the ones who started the

Industrial Revolution Dbq
The Industrial Revolution of the 19th and 20th century transformed rural to urban life and gave
people higher expectations for improving their standard of working and living conditions. The
increased number of jobs, along with technological innovations in transportation and housing
construction, encouraged migration to cities. Development of railroads, streetcars, and trolleys in the
19th century enabled city boundaries to expand. People no longer had to live within walking
distance of their jobs. All of the expansion of businesses, cities, and population led to absolutely no
sanitation because multiple families lived in a tenant –a low costing apartment building designed to
house many families– and they lived without a proper waste disposal. This caused the spreading of
germs and that resulted in the death of millions. Workers believed if they argued and protested, they
would have to be granted better living and working conditions, so they formed unions. By the turn
of the 20th century, labor unions destroyed the free market by restricting businesses with rules that
crucially penalized the wealthy for being successful. The labor unions' desire to maintain these
rights were campaigned through arguments, protests, and riots resulting in an enforcement of
regulations such as an increase in pay, a decrease in working hours, and an improvement in working
conditions. An increase of wages was one of the key outcomes from the labor union campaigns.

Due to the changes and intense job conditions labor unions began to form in an effort to bargain for
better rights. Strikes took place, resulting in conflict between workers and employers. The most
influential of the unions being created at the time was the American Federation of Labor union due
to its focus on higher wages and improved working conditions for its members. Miners in the
mining industry were faced with long working hours, unsafe working conditions and were poorly
paid. Most lived in company towers where doctors, schools, and law enforcement were provided by
the actual companies in an effort to control the workers. "Companies maintained an oppressive
working environment, prohibiting workers from talking or gathering, to discourage the creation of
unions." (Habashi, 2011) In 1890 the Unite Mine Workers of America was founded representing
workers in the mining sector that fought for collective bargaining. During 1933 and 1936, President
Franklin Roosevelt's "New Deal" was created protecting the rights of labor unions and prohibited
employers from firing workers who took part in union activities. Labor Unions Today The work
force has become extremely competitive over the past decade due to the drop in the economy. Union
members are found to be in an advantage being that in some cases they earn a

Big Business In The Gilded Age Essay
As the age of Reconstruction ended, the Gilded Age of big businesses began in the United States and
with it came new jobs and goods for Americans. When new corporations became more successful, it
made an immense impact on the economy, the political system and the lives of citizens.
Economically, the cost of food and living went down significantly as well as a surplus of jobs.
Political leaders were corrupted by big business as their decisions and laws were influenced by the
wealthy class' bribes and stealing from the common man. Though mass production allowed goods to
be made quicker and in greater quantity, the workers' horrible working conditions and remarkably
long hours caused the creation of unions and strikes. Despite the great effect big business had on the
economy in the Gilded Age through the decline in the cost of food and fuel, the daily lives of
average working–class citizens were negatively impacted by long hours, horrid working conditions
leading to unions and a corrupted political system. The use of mass production allowed for an
increase of jobs and supply of many goods in the United States and allowed for the cost of goods to
decline. The prices of food, the cost of food and fuel and lighting decreased significantly between
1870 and 1900 as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The use of mass production caused for big business to prosper, and created jobs. However, mass
production had a negative effect later in American history due to the great amount of supply and
lack of demand. As such, in the 1930s a major economic downfall occurred known as the Great
Depression after the crash of Wall Street where millions of dollars and jobs were lost. Big business
both positively and negatively affected the American economy as it lessened cost of living, food,
fuel and lighting in Gilded Age but later caused the Great

China Labor Watch ( Clw )
CHINA LABOR WATCH – Founded by labor activist Li Qiang in 2000, China Labor Watch (CLW)
is a powerful and independent non–profit organization dedicated to protecting the workers rights in
China. With the support of the media and the labor organizations, CLW conducts deep investigations
and publishes the reports about the sub–standard working conditions and wages in factories in
China. The reports not only create awareness among the world community, but also put pressure on
the corporations to improve conditions for workers.
Apple's Supplier Foxconn, came under intense scrutiny for its suspicious labor practices and suicide
by its fourteen young workers at the Foxconn Shenzhen factory in 2010, followed by the explosion
in Chengdu factory resulting in 3 deaths and sixteen injuries in 2011. In 2010 CLW also reported
about several violations of China labor laws based investigation collected through off–site
interviews and from its own staff who had purposefully worked in Foxconn factories as workers to
gain real and accurate information. These reports puts a big question mark on the supplier
responsibility reports and standards set by Apple.
According to CLW, Apple is equally responsible for the China labor law violations and worker
suicides as its goal of profit maximization comes at the cost of brutal working conditions at foxconn
factories. This is because the quality and price of production material used in manufacturing is pre–
determined according to the Apple

The Pros and Cons of Labor Unions Essay
The rise of capitalism as the dominant economic system in the United States made the rise of unions
inevitable; given the natural division between those with capital that control the means of
production, and labor, who is treated simply as another factor of production (Hodson & Sullivan,
2008). While labor unions have made significant improvements to the working environment, with
the regulation of safety, environment, labor and wage; labor unions have also contributed to the
decline of U.S. dominance in industries like steel, automotive, education and airlines. In today's
global economy, can labor unions continue to be a force for good in the United States, or have they
become harmful institutions? Since the birth of the country, labor ... Show more content on

Two years after the infamous Triangle fire, 20,000 workers in Lawrence, Massachusetts; angered
over wage cuts and deplorable conditions went on strike, prompting the twin reactions of police
brutality and press coverage (Hodson & Sullivan, 2008). "As a result of the strike, not only were
wages raised and conditions improved in the textile industry as a whole, but important legislation
was also enacted that restricted the exploitation of child and female labor" (Hodson & Sullivan,
2008, p. 132). It is doubtful that working conditions would have evolved to the level of equity we
find today, without the sacrifice and activism of unions and their members. While organized labor's
storied history demonstrates remarkable achievements, there has been a downside for the American
economy. By way of example, the formerly dominant U.S. steel industry serves to remind of an time
when poor management, global competition, and union excess were necessary causes of a dramatic
and rapid industry decline. U.S. Steel and other steel companies for decades, relied on the tried and
true strategies of vertical integration and price control (Hoerr, 1988). In the 1960's, foreign
competition from developing countries like South Korea, Taiwan and Brazil entered the market
"with low material and labor costs, modern equipment, and the support of government policies"
(Hoerr, 1988, p. 99). Because of lower costs and concern over supply created by constant threat of
strike, many

Laissez Faire Movement
Unions emerged out of worker unrest in the United States, these unions had a vision. They wanted to
establish a voice for the workingman in which they could influences wages, hours and benefits.
These unions were necessary to prevent the abuse of Americans everywhere. These organizations
were dedicated to protecting the working mans interests.
Unions grew out of the necessity to protect the American people during an age where a demand for
unskilled labor into the workforce to provide cheap labor. This source of cheap labor came in the
form of immigrants, women and children. The sheer amount of available workers made every
employee expendable. This forced people to work longer hours for lower wages because there was

These organizations achieved their goals through education of the youth, secrecy to avoid blowback

all workers from the aggressive economic trusts. Samuel Gompers was influential in organizing
laborers by their craft. His union had three main objectives higher wages, shorter hours and better
conditions for workers. Gompers used walkouts, boycotts and negotiations as tools to achieve these
goals. This set the precedent for the following unions as they followed the non violent method laid
out by Gompers. There were some violent exceptions though such as the Haymaker Riot and

The Rise Of The Big Business Transformed Rural America
The rise of the Big Business transformed rural America to an industrialized urban nation that
became to be known as the Gilded Age. During this time most Americans worked 10 to 16 hour
shifts, 6 days out of the week with a wage that was below the poverty line. Even though they
worked extremely inhumane hour shifts, it was barely enough for them and their families to survive.
During this era men, women, and children performed harsh labor in factories and mills until their
bodies could bear no more. Throughout the age of the big business, children as young as 8 years old
were put to work and were denied the chance to go to school, there was no benefits, no medical
coverage, and if the workers became injured while on the job it was overlooked and was seen as if
nothing had happened and were fired and replaced by someone else. Workers were being taken
advantage of, but they realized something had to be done in order for change to occur, so they
unionized. An important factor they acknowledged was that there were more workers than owners
so unions were created. During this period of time unions were extremely needed in order to
improve working conditions, protect workers, and fight for higher wages. Likewise, Unions were
successful, because during this time the seed was planted toward unity and as of today we can
appreciate safer working conditions, higher wages, and more opportunity. Although Unions did not
sprung overnight, they slowly grew stronger as the time went by. As

The life that makes each of us believe that we have a purpose other than slaving over our careers.
We want the type of life that does not involve numbers, and clients. We want to replace those with
birthday parties and time with loved ones. Every hard working employed person looks forward to
their vacation, a time to relax and step away from the office. It does not mean that we are not
dedicated to our jobs, just that we merely need that down time to be human beings. However, we
continue to give our all to our employers, even at the expense of our family.
It is not necessary for Americans to work over a 40–hour workweek because if we were able to
spend more time with our families and have a better quality of life with a decrease in stress and
health problems, society would benefit greatly.
There is a good chance that we are all guilty of overworking. We often neglect our families, our
diets, our stress level, and most of all, our sanity. We are so tired that we do not have the energy to
keep up with our daily duties. Our laundry and dishes pile up, and we can't find that small amount of
time to take our kids to the park. We lost track of what a real vacation felt like, because if for some
small reason we actually took days off work, we spend them catching up on the areas we have fallen
behind in. The question is why? Why do we choose to over–do ourselves for work? It's simple, we

National Cranberry Case Analysis
National Cranberry is a cooperative of berry growers around North America that share common
production facilities and for the last several years have been experiencing capacity bottlenecks
among other issues. After initial analysis, two main factors that contributed to a decrease in
production were found. The first issue in the business is that the supply trucks and drivers delivering
the harvest were not properly organized and there was not enough space and organization to allow
for smooth offloading of several trucks a day. The second major issue is the rampant absenteeism
and need for overtime work based on shortage of workers. This has driven the cost of running the
business up and drastically reducing profitability. A lesser but ... Show more content on

Nevertheless, some trucks had to wait for up to 3 hours to dump their loads which was solely
attributed to the holding bins which could only hold 7200bbls total of both dry and wet berries.
Additionally, out of the 27 holding bins, only 11 were actually set up to hold wet berries which
made the constrain even more difficult. Once that section of the plant was full there was very little
that crews in receiving could do to alleviate the problem. In the next section of the production
process, dechaffing was possible at a rate of 4500bbl/hour which over a 12 hour period would be
more than enough capacity even on the heaviest barrel deliveries days.
Where the bottlenecks really start to become apparent is in the drying stage of the wet berries where
only 3 drying stations existed and in a combined effort could only dry at 600bbl/hour. In the harvest
of 1980, there was 58% of the total capacity coming in as wet berries which was already over the
capacity based on a 12 hour day. In 1981, the harvest in set to bring in 70% of the berries as wet
berries which would further slow the overall process.
Assuming that the Kiwanee dumpers, dechaffing and de–stoning machinery were all working to
their full capacity of 4500bbl/hour, the increase to 70% wet berries would overload the driers within
the first few hours of production. If the RP1 was to add one new

Gwendolyn Sitch's Character Analysis
Gwendolyn Stitch is living a facade. Appearing like she has it all together, she graces the office with

"Gwendolyn Stitch's door is always open to all of us...because her door is always open she hides and
cries in a stall in the women's room" (Orozco, 1995, page 5). Her character is important as it
addresses the role of a lot of women in the work place, overextending themselves, taking on a lot of
extracurricular tasks, all while not taking care of herself. Gwendolyn doesn't believe that she can be
vulnerable in her would place, and she would be right. As her co–worked expressed "She does not
let any of this interfere with her work. If it interfered with her work, she might have to be let go."
(Orozco, 1995, page 5). There is a satire approach to Gwendolyn's character that addresses corporate

The incidence of earning money from childhood generates a feeling of independence among
children due to which they like to behave freely and promiscuously and do not like to be subjected

Khandekar and Naik (1972) observed that since the early years are meant to equip oneself with
knowledge, techniques and skills for one's different adult roles in the society, having to take up a job
at a young age to earn a living, is bound to affect the very process of growing up. Chakraborty

male wage rate in 1984–85 and 1986–87 respectively. But the man days of employment for adult
males in agriculture and all other occupations were 242 and 257 and for children there were 307 and

Factors Affecting Labor Productivity And Their Affect...
Q1. Factors affecting Labor productivity and their affect levels? Ans. The Factors that can affect the
labor productivity are discussed below:– 1. Overtime is the major factor that can affect the
productivity rate. Planning of expanded work days or weeks surpassing a standard eight–hour work
day or 40–hour work week brings down work yield and productivity through physical weariness and
poor mental demeanor. 2. Joint ownership: – This happens when work is booked using a similar
office or work range that must be shared or possessed by more than one specialty, and not foreseen
in the first offer or plan. 3. Beneficial occupancy:– This is an aftereffect of working over, around, or
in nearness to different specialties, proprietor 's faculty, or generation hardware, which may bring
about commotion confinements, tidy, or different risky hazard. This may likewise forestall or cause
get to limitations. 4. Errors and Omissions:– Increments in errors and omissions affect on work
profitability since changes are then ordinarily performed on a crash premise, out of grouping, cause
weakening of supervision, or whatever other negative effects. 5. Crew size inefficiency: – This is the
point at which the ideal group size is modified by including or erasing team individuals. At the point
when specialists are included or erased from a group, it separates the first collaboration and beat of
the team and results in loss of profitability. 6. Logistics:– Deficient or poor material handling,

Over the past few decades, the work overload has raised and worsened causing an increase in work
hours as well as levels of stress within employees. As stated by Stefani Forster in her article
"Sweden Adopts A 6–Hour Work Day: Should Canada Follow Suit?" employees who work longer
hours are associated with a decrease in productivity per hour. Sweden has decided to switch to a six
hour work day unlike Canada's average eight our work day, for the organizations to succeed. Much
of a company's success is based on the employee's performance as well as the ability to complete

A six hour shift would allow employees to intensely focus on their work and be able to have the
endurance to complete the work. Instead of taking more breaks in between the long eight hour shift,
workers will began to manage their time more effectively to be able to productively finish the work
in fewer hours. Many employees work longer hours for many reasons, one of them being
consumerism. They want to be able to have enough money to buy materialistic items and services as
a way of filling the void of happiness, so they attempt to buy themselves happiness considering they
don't have the time or energy to actually see their families or friends and enjoy their free time so
they try to buy happiness. Workaholics are also people who are known to work long hours because
they feel as if they are compelled to work due to internal stress which results to damage towards an

Homework Is Too Much Homework
Now I don't want to get off on a rant here, but school is giving us way too much homework and
projects. We have only been in school for two months and we have had at least two projects for
every core class except math, and a final 8th grade project.
Everyday we wake up, go to school, and come home, easy right? No, everyday that we come home
from school we have homework. Each class gives us at least 30 minutes worth of homework. 6
classes a day times 30 minutes is 180 minutes, which is 3 hours. We also need at least 1 hour for
dinner and breaks in between.
I go to school for about 7 hours (7 hours and 15 minutes to be exact) and when we get home, they
expect us to spend at least another three hours practicing what we learned in school. Also, on nights
that we have projects, that adds an extra two hours. My brain feels like it's older than my grandma!
Also, not to brag, but I'm a pretty smart student, and teachers think that just because we are smart,
we should get more work than everybody else. In honors math, we have to get more class work done
in a shorter period of time, and more homework than everybody else. We tend to want to get good
grades in every class, average grades are not enough for us. We have to, and I mean have to, get at
least a 6 and if not higher, if we get a grade lower than that we are not satisfied and unhappy. To get
that higher grade on homework and projects, we spend more time than an average person would, so
giving us more work is very time

Taking a Look at Professional Procrastination
By definition, the act of procrastinating is to postpone an event until a later time. We as humans
have all delayed something in our lives, either related to school, work, or social activities. Although
anything in life has the potential to be postponed or put off until the last–minute, procrastination is
more commonly seen in schools and colleges among students. There are several reasons why
students put off assignments, but, the main reason is that they do not take pleasure in doing their
homework. Even though some students are unsuccessful in their dawdling, many students are often
successful and benefit from saving coursework until the "last minute". Taking a look at this process,
we can see that procrastinating may actually save time and energy.
The first step in the procrastination process is to make a conscious decision to postpone a project
until a later date. Upon receiving a homework assignment, students will often look over what they
will be asked to do. If they are discontented by what they are presented with, thoughts such as "I do
not want to do this" or "I will do this later" will spring up in their brain. After a student has either of
the previous thoughts, they then put the assignment in their folder or binder and do not touch it until
later. Frequently a student has no motivation to begin an essay, for example, right after receiving the
prompt because there is no pressure to complete it in a short time. Since there is no drive to work on
the essay, the

Should Six-Hour Work Days Become Standard In The United...
Should six–hour work days become standard in the United States. This essay is going to be about
the difference of a six–hour work day and a eight–hour work day. Most people would like the have
six–hour work days so they can get off earlier but they wont make as much money as they would on
a eight–hour work day. A six–hour work day for most people isnt gonna do as much as a eight–hour
work day would. They cant make as much money only working six hours out of the day because that
wouldnt be enough money to raise a family. Studies have showed that six–hour work days are
harder on the body then eight–hour work days because they have a very short ammount of time to
get the work they need to get done completed by the end of their shifts. Six–hour work days require
the employer to come up with the money to hire more staff to cover the now–empty shifts. Eight–
hour work days are fair because the human body doesn't start to fully function till about four hours
after they have woken up. Eight–hour work days also make it to where the employees are making
more money and putting less stress on their bodies to where they are not completely exhausted when
they get home. People will be able to feed and support there families because they are making twice
the amount of money on a eight–hour work day ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From my exspirence when you work less hours out of the days you dont make as much money so
then you can't do everything you want to do. It takes longer to save up money working less hours
and then there are times you have nothing to do so you just sit there and do nothing. With eight–hour
work days you can save up your money twice as fast and be able to do more stuff plus you will have
a full schedule depending on whe4re you work at. I feel like eight–hour work days is plenty of time
to work and is fair to the people and very helpfull to those who really need money and if peole want

The International Company 's Workers ' Human Rights Essay
Globalization is defined as the act of globalizing, or extending to other or all parts of the word. In
other words, globalization is that the world has experienced two great waves of gobalization driven
by the free trade policies of major trading countries and falling transportation costs.
The first wave was from roughly the down of the Industrial Revolution in the 19 century to the
World War I, and second has run since 1947. International trade and international migration grew
substantially during the first wave, but world trade increased even more rapidly during the first 25
years of the World War II wave. Both periods of gobalization faced significant suspicion about the
results of globalization for labor conditions.
Therefore, the prupose of this paper is to compare the international company's workers' human
rights through the influence of the international trade by using experts' research paper and the data
from internet. At the same time that many national governments tried to prevent global work forces
from eroding local labor conditions, fleding efforts at international governmance responded to
concern that countries with superior labor conditions would be at a competitive disadvantage in
international markets.

The Pros And Cons Of Labor Unions
Around the 20th century, the rich believed in Social Darwinism, an ideology where rich are the ones
to survive while the rich are the ones to become extinct. Due to this, the working conditions were in
need of improvement, for the rich did not care about the working class. People who believed the
illusion that one day they will become rich tried getting jobs in factories and other places. The rich
were getting richer, and the poor were getting poorer, all while workers suffer horrible working
conditions. The creation of labor unions helped improve these conditions. Some may argue that
labor unions essentially destroyed the free market by restricting the actions of the wealthy. However,
although half of this argument holds some truth, labor unions did not destroy the free market. On the
contrary, labor unions improved the free market by creating laws and improvements for workers in
the United States through revolts and strikes. For instance, in Albert Parsons' testimony to the House
of Representatives Select Committee on Causes of the General Depression in Labor and Business in
1879, Parsons believed that workers should have an 8–hour work day. To achieve this, Parsons
attempted to rally people together to go against the rich in the Haymarket Square Riots. During this
event, Parsons incited a riot which was ensued by workers wanting reform in order to obtain an 8–
hour work day. Parsons justifies his actions in his testimony, stating that workers are only seeking to

American Labor Movement: Development of Unions Essays
The American Labor Movement of the nineteenth century developed as a result of the city–wide
organizations that unhappy workers were establishing. These men and women were determined to
receive the rights and privileges they deserved as citizens of a free country. They refused to be
treated like slaves, and work under unbearable conditions any longer. Workers joined together and
realized that a group is much more powerful than an individual when protesting against intimidating
companies. Unions, coalitions of workers pursuing a common objective, began to form demanding
only ten instead of twelve hours in a work day. Workers realized the importance of economic and
legal protection against the powerful employers who took advantage of them. ... Show more content

The union was originally a secret, but later was open to all workers, including blacks, women and
farmers. Five hundred thousand workers joined in a year. Their goals were an eight–hour work day,
a minimum wage, arbitration rather than strikes, health and safety laws, equal pay for equal work,
no child labor under the age of fourteen, and government ownership of railroads, telegraphs and
telephones. However, the Knights of Labor was a relatively weak organization, and eventually fell
apart. (www.planetpapers.com/ Assets/306.shtml, 2)
In 1886, the American Federation of Labor (AF of L) was formed and replaced the Knights of
Labor. Its leader was former cigar union official Samuel Gompers who only wanted to focus on
skilled workers. (www.planetpapers.com/Assets/306.shtml, 2)
The founders were quoted as saying, "the various trades have been affected by the introduction of
machinery, the subdivision of labor, the use of women's and children's labor and the lack of an
apprentice system so that the skilled trades were rapidly sinking to the level of pauper labor. To
protect the skilled labor of America from being reduced to beggary and to sustain the standard of
American workmanship and skill, the trade unions of America have been established." (AFL–CIO
American Federationalist, 1) The AF of L was a conglomeration of twenty–five unions that included
three hundred thousand workers working for increasing wages, reducing hours, and

A Brief Note On The Industrial Revolution During The 19th...
Changing 12, 14, and even 16 hour workdays to only eight hours was major decision that had to be
made in the 19th century. Since the Industrial Revolution changed the way many people worked,
working longer hours in factories involved having to work in harsh conditions, causing illness and
disease. This was hard because laborers worked long hours with very small chances of an
advancement. Because of this, many workers resorted to strikes or stopping until their demands
were met, but ended up giving up and going back to work. Since working long hours is bad for the
laborers health, adjusting the time spent working to eight hours will help workers become more
attentive, while also making the unemployment rates decrease. The worker 's ... Show more content

Along with developing conditions like anemia from working extensive hours in factories, nervous
diseases like neurasthenia were common. This disease has been found by physicians and
physiologists to be alarmingly prevalent among industrial workers, mostly because of the strain of
immense work hours. Reducing exhaustive hours of labor would give employees the chance to
improve their health, making them improve the quality of their work. Furthermore, people
developed physical stress because of the substantial shift from having an economy based mostly on
agriculture to one based on mainly manufacturing. Even though in factory work, where no particular
diseases threaten, disease would be spread quickly. Apart from neurasthenia, many other illnesses
spread. Majority of the diseases spread would be the cause of over fatigue. An example of how
diseases may spread more rapidly is from an expert included in Supreme Court Brief: "Thus, for
instance, of two groups of animals, the one resting and the other fatigued by muscular work and
both inoculated by pathogenic bacteria, the fatigued animals succumb more quickly and in larger
numbers." Also, scientific laboratory experiments prove that fatigue markedly diminishes the power
of the blood to overcome bacteria and their toxic

Korean based company Samsung has many ethical issues associated with their company. One such
issue is low wages. One place where this is an issue is in their factories, especially in china.

is the equivalent of 206 U.S. dollars. Because the pay is so low, these workers are forced to work
overtime in order to provide for themselves and their families. Theguardian.com also alleges that

Workers are also forced to work without pay, as they are forced to make early morning off–the–

Watch also alleges that at least three factories (TSMD, SEHZ and SSKMT) have hired underage
workers, and compensate them the same as adults, 206 U.S. dollars. Chinalaborwatch.org has said
that if a worker is absent from one day of work without applying for leave, two days pay will be
deducted from their monthly salary. The China Labor Watch has discovered that many children
laborers are working in Samsung factories without labor contracts, and many workers are working
11 hour shifts, but only being paid for 10 hours. China Labor Watch's investigation into Shinyang
revealed 15 labor violations. One such violation had to do with child labor, with these children being
paid less. Wantchinatimes.com even alleges that some children would work these 11–hour shifts, six
days a week. These child laborers were also paid only 70% of what their adult counterparts were
paid. "These children, without a labor contract, do the same work for the same long night–shift
hours and at the same intensity as adult workers but are paid one–third less." The Shinyang factory

Impact Of Industrialization On Child Labor
During Industrialization in America, children were working and being mistreated, adults were
suffering as well. Industrialization happened in the late 1800's when people no longer wanted to
work in farms and decided to move to the city. Factories and mines needed workers but they would
pay them very little. Children were working instead of going to school and getting an education.
This only benefited the bosses of factories and railroads because they were the ones making the
most money. While the workers were struggling to be healthy and earn at least 2 dollars a day.
Children were in danger of getting their arm or leg seriously injured. The impacts of Industrialization
on workers was mostly negative because they were allowing workers to work in dangerous areas for
long hours and their health was being affected negatively. The response for these two topics did not
improve as the years passed. On the other hand, child labor was also an impact which its response
did improve.
Workers worked long hours. According to primary source document G which was created in 1894,
"The most of the men got under two dollars per pay." This document is titled, "Homestead and Its
Perilous Trades Impressioning of a Visit." It is for the workers and government of the United

The Pros And Cons Of Compensation
Compensation is defined as all forms of financial and non–financial rewards, benefits and tangible
services that employee receives in return for the work from an organization (Milkovich, Newman &
Gerhart, 2010). In recent years, most of the companies in Malaysia are followed the trend of pay
increase with productivity gains. This scenario increases the economic development in Malaysia.
With the rapid growing of economic in Malaysia, the cost of living is getting higher. People are
expected to obtain a job with high pay and good compensation package. From current society
perspective, pay is a measure of justice and fairness. Every employee should be treated fairly
because they will compare oneself with another individual. Thus, it is important for us to justify the
cash and incentive compensation policy of company D from society perspective. Firstly, company D
conducts a performance management system in "Pay for performance" basic. From society's
perspective, performance management system is a system that enables the organization members to

Factory Workers In Henry Ford's Factory
As the first paragraph states, in 1914 factory workers worked about twelve hours a day until it was
cut four hours down to eight hour workdays in 1914 by Henry Ford in his factorys. The workers
productivity skyrocketed and ever since then eight hour work days have been the norm and it has
worked well. Even most schools have classes that are almost eight hours a day and kids productivity
seems to be doing fine. Changing the normal eight hours that has been the norm for over a hundred
years could ruin companies by causing substantial profit loss when they have to hire new employees
to cover the empty shifts that six–hour days would leave. There are also more issues for the
employees. Like the second passage states, the employees hours

Australia in the Early 1900s
Australia in the early 1900s has developed a reputation as a 'working man's paradise' for its greater
opportunity to success and an egalitarian society. However not all workers proved this to be true. In
order to determine this statement, Issues to be discussed include firstly the hours of work for
different genders, secondly the working conditions and finally the dispute for the right to fair
treatment to women and Aboriginal natives throughout the 19th century.
In order to create Australia's image as a working man's paradise, workers gained rights to speak. The
first of these issues to be discussed are the hours of work. The balanced working time of eight–hour
day movement was introduced in the mid 19th century. It was conducted by trade unions for the
right of shorter working hours suitable Australia's harsh climate. This fairer working condition of
eight–hour day has succeeded by the end of the century, when the government introduced fairer laws
in the late 1890s which attempted to reduce working hours and give workers Saturday afternoon off.
This achievement established a national standard that was aspired by the rest of the world and
formed the basis of Australia's reputation as a 'working man's paradise'.
Even though the eight–hour day movement were widespreading, there was only a minority of
workers initially won the Eight–Hour Day. Overtime working had caused stress on the workers as
male death had a large increasing throughout 1890 to 1914 from being over tired.

The reason the scientific managers are said to have opposed the demand for shorter hours was
because worktime reform tends to unite workers: Taylor's ideal of a "high–priced man", set apart
from his fellows by the desire for premium pay, translated easily into managerial practice regarding
wages. Cuts in hours, in contrast, would have had to influence whole departments, producing the
kind of group feeling that was anathema to Taylor[3, pp. 136–7]. Journal of Management History
Vol. 1 No. 2, 1995, pp. 8–25. © MCB University Press, 1355–252X Finally, Roediger asserts that
Taylor had little concern with worker physiology and that the scientific managers denied that the
psychology of individual workers played a complex part in the determination of how hard they
laboured. Rather, it is claimed, Taylorism relied on mechanics, deskilling, isolation and wage
incentives to induce workers to labour at the prescribed pace: Thus Taylorism undercut the older
rationales for securing cooperation from a healthy workforce through reduction in hours. The
standard guidebook of the Taylorists, published in 1911, featured a daily time clock, calibrated to
the hundredth of an hour. It was a ten–hour clock[3, p. 137]. Indicative of the ease with which many
analysts accept that they can vilify the scientific management movement, Roediger does not offer

The Riot, The Pullman Strike, And The Homestead Strike
In the late 1800s and the early 1900s, labor was anything but easy. Factory workers faced long
hours, low pay, high unemployment fears, and poor working conditions during this time. Life today
is much easier in comparison to the late 1800s. Americans have shorter days, bigger pay and easier
working conditions. Not comparable to how life is today, many riots sparked, and citizens began to
fight for equal treatment. Along with other important events, the Haymarket Riot, the Pullman
Strike, and the Homestead strike all play a vital role in illustrating labor's struggle to gain fair and
equitable treatment during the late 1800s and early 1900s.
Treatment during the late 1800s is much different from how Americans are treated in daily life now.

Overall, in the 1900s workdays were long, pay was small and workers were worked hard. Now,
work days are shortened, the pay is higher, and working conditions are much more ideal. In the

wages made up a day in the life of someone living in the late 1800s to the early 1900s. The
Haymarket Riot was the result of the bombing in Chicago. "In the summer 1886 the campaign for an
eight–hour day, long a rallying cry that united American laborers, culminated in a national strike on
May 1, 1886. Between 300,000 and 500,000 workers struck across the country. In Chicago, police
forces killed several workers while breaking up protestors at the McCormick reaper works. Labor
leaders and radicals called for a protest at Haymarket Square the following day, which police also
proceeded to break up. But as they did, a bomb exploded and killed seven policemen. Police fired
into the crowd, killing four. The deaths of the Chicago policemen sparked outrage across the nation
and the sensationalization of the "Haymarket Riot" helped many Americans to associate unionism
with radicalism" (Yawp). As a result of the Haymarket Riot was the loss of members of the Knight
of Labor. "The national movement for an eight–hour day collapsed"(Yawp). The Haymarket Riot

Globalization And Corporate Expansion Of American Companies
The globalization and corporate expansion of American companies has promoted inequality in the
United States and the world, largely through means defined to be inhumane. Corporate America has
embraced a 'hands–free' method of globalization. By both outsourcing labor and targeting more
consumer groups, especially those yearning for the American Dream, corporate America has
successfully increased profits. Almost everyone on earth is feeling the negative effects of corporate
America's actions. By outsourcing labor, prohibiting unions, disadvantaging women, and driving
wages down, globalization and corporate expansion advocates for inequality in both the United
States and the rest of the world. By moving labor to places outside of the United States, American
companies are able to secure cheap labor. This cheap labor negatively affects the lives of Americans
and foreigners. Some places even paying daily wages below the cost of a loaf of bread. Not only are
the companies driving up their profits, they are globalizing their brand at almost no cost to them and
a massive cost to everyone else. Anywhere litter flows with the brand of an American company, is
free advertising to them. The crushed Coca–Cola can or the half–rotted McDonald's bag, all are
examples of a free ad. According to John A. Powell and S.P. Udayakumar, "The style of globalism
pushed by the United States has favored the free movement and protection of capital, while being at

Eight-Hours Research Paper
Eight–Hour Days Work Just Fine Some people think that an eight–hour shift at work is to much.
Shorter shifts mean less money for everyone, it also means more problems. The working industry
already has enough problems and the standard working time is not one of them. There is not a good
explantion as to why we should even condsider making a work day standard into six–hours, its only
a two–hour difference from the current standerd, it's not a big enough difference to try and make
six–hours the new standard. Imagine everything you do in a normal day at your job, now imagine
everything you do with two–hours less time to do all of your work. It would be rather difficult don't
you think? Workers would have to work even harder to get the things that needs to be done
completed. Many workers would feel more wore out than the usual, and would get paid less for
doing everything they could do more efficently in eight–hour time frame. ... Show more content on

The Effects Of Haymarket Bombing On American Labor Movement
In his book Death in the Haymarket, James Green recounted the American labor movement in the
late 1800s. The main focus of Green's book was the bombing of Haymarket, which occurred on May
4 in 1886. Beginning as a peaceful protest promoting the eight–hour work day, a bomb was thrown
causing devastating consequences. The Haymarket bombing almost ended the labor movement
altogether, with unjustified trials and fear implemented amongst all Americans. However, it is
important to know that the Haymarket bombing is not just an isolated event. From wage cuts to
people going on strike, labor unions starting up, to almost losing the labor movement altogether. The
Haymarket bombing was the fuse to an event larger bomb known as the labor movement. Although
the Haymarket bombing is an extremely important event, it should be seen in a much larger context
rather than an isolated event. The Haymarket bombing was an important incident in America's
history nevertheless, it falls under a much bigger category which is the labor movement. The labor
movement was started because of the unjust ways that labor had on the working class in America
during the 1800s. It first started out with wage cuts for the working class in America, which then led
to an increasing amount of strikes. Then leading to the formation of labor unions, which is the
people who were attending the meeting at Haymarket the day of the bombing. So if the labor
movement had never started, then the bombing at Haymarket may have

immigrants, who just immigrated to the U.S. Not knowing the foreign culture, they were hired by a
meatpacking plant. This plant, ran by corrupt politicians, applied strict rules and regulations; not
reimbursing/paying their workers enough, long hours, etc. Jurgis joined a Union, after realizing he
should fight for his rights as a laborer. Sinclair's opinion about labor rights was, that the common
working man should fight for, and be granted more rights to increase their chance of supporting their
families.
One case of when Sinclair shows his opinion ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For after all the hard work a man did, he was only paid for part of it." (Sinclair 95). Sinclair hits two
rights that laborers were fighting for in the unions in this quote. The first right Sinclair spoke of was
of long working hours, when he said "And so on Christmas Eve Jurgis worked till nearly one o'clock
in the morning, and on Christmas Day he was on the killing beds at seven o'clock.". Sinclair visually
paints a picture in the reader's mind of how long the common working man's hours were. The other
right Sinclair spoke of was unfair pay when he wrote "All this was bad; and yet it was not the worst.
For after all the hard work a man did, he was only paid for a part of it.". Sinclair suggests how
unethical the wages were with emotion. The reader can almost picture how little a laborer might get
paid for his long hours of work. Sinclair united these two rights he thought laborers should fight for,
into one powerful sentence.
In conclusion, Upton Sinclair has a strong opinion that the typical working man should quarrel for,
and be granted more rights. When they get more rights, they boost their chance of supporting their
families. Sinclair used his novel The Jungle to express many things about what life was

The Gilded Age And The Gilded Age

  • 1. The Gilded Age And The Gilded Age Both books look at the Gilded Age in different perspectives as to how it affected the USA. A People's History of the United States talks about how the people rebelled for their rights as working citizens, showing a in–depth view in how the American people lived during this time. A Patriot's History of the United States takes a broad approach, just stating the facts and telling from a political view in what was happening in the government. Even though both books talk from different perspectives, these authors hit some touchy details that they share similar or different views on. In this case, A Patriot's History of the United States does a better job at dealing with these topics because even though broad, the author shows the logic behind the decisions made. Even though these two novels have different perspectives of what was going on during the Gilded Age, they both talk about the effectiveness of the unions, the conditions in which the workers were in, and the struggles of the daily people trying to survive. One of the major things to come out of the 19th century were the formation of labor unions as it was a response to social and economic changes of the industrial revolution. One of the major unions the books talked about was the Knights of Labor, an organization made to find fairness in the workplace. However, they only supported white fairness, which made them unliked. Furthermore, they were not the only unions formed during this time. The Western ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. The Social Impact Of Industrialization In The United States Industrialization started because of new inventions, cheap labor, technology, and a plethora of raw materials. Industrialization led to the rise of labor unions and separation by classes socially. The culture of the United States changed drastically because of immigrants coming to America. Industrialization affected the economy because of industries growing fast and creating more jobs than ever before. The rise of industry brought about many innovations that forever changed the United States. The social impact of industrialization led to the the emergence of labor unions and the separation of classes in cities. The american federation of labor was one of the first trade unions that prospered. The leader was samuel gompers and he wanted unions to become accepted into american society. He thought that the AFL (american federation of labor) should work for the small gains such as higher wages and better working conditions. Gompers had three main goals for the AFL. He wanted to convince companies to recognize unions. He pushed for closed shops which meant companies could only hire union members and an eight–hour work day. The Women's Trade Union League or WTUL was the first national association dedicated to advocare women's labor issues. WTUL wanted in eight–hour work day, creation of minimum wage, no more evening work for women, and the abolition of child labor. These unions helped create better working conditions for people in years to come. When cities grew wealthy people, the middle class, and the working class lived in different neighborhoods. The growth of cities was so fast that crime, violence, fire, disease, and pollution became a big issue. The crowded urban areas are where criminals thrived. The industrialization movement affected social conditions in the United States.... Industrialization had a major impact on the United States culture. The many jobs available led to a rush of immigration. This led people to have feelings of nativism which is an extreme dislike for immigrants by native–born people and they wanted to limit immigration. A major anti–immigrant organization in the Northeast and Midwest was called the American Protective Association and they strongly disliked foreigners and Catholics and ... • 5. Technology And New Technology : S. Robber Barons Elis Guevara Lemeland Per 1. EQ#9 Dec. 29 New Technology: In the 1800's after the civil war, people began investing and creating new technology to fill the gap of economic prosperity that slaves gave them. New technology consisted of new energy, transportation, and communication. D. New technology in the second half of the 1800's consisted of lighting, oil, communication, and the railroad system. Inventors had increasing productivity because if they made a new invention they could patent it and then make more money on it. Railroads are really the heart of industrialization because the railroad system led to faster industrialization, communication, and transportation. S. The new technology of the 1800's led to rapid industrialization which would lead to factories being built quickly. Factories would then lead to growing cities, and economic prosperity. The new technology was also a symbol of american prosperity. 2. Robber Barons: Robber Barons is a phrase used by historians that describes industrialists in the late 1800's. A Robber Baron is a powerful industrialist. D. Robber Barons are industrialists who established large businesses during the industrialization era. This nickname however suggests that these industrialists made their fortune by stealing from the people. Historians say that they use all the natural resources and coerce politicians to act in their favour. S. Robber Barons were so selfish that their workers would be the ones who started the movement ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Industrial Revolution Dbq The Industrial Revolution of the 19th and 20th century transformed rural to urban life and gave people higher expectations for improving their standard of working and living conditions. The increased number of jobs, along with technological innovations in transportation and housing construction, encouraged migration to cities. Development of railroads, streetcars, and trolleys in the 19th century enabled city boundaries to expand. People no longer had to live within walking distance of their jobs. All of the expansion of businesses, cities, and population led to absolutely no sanitation because multiple families lived in a tenant –a low costing apartment building designed to house many families– and they lived without a proper waste disposal. This caused the spreading of germs and that resulted in the death of millions. Workers believed if they argued and protested, they would have to be granted better living and working conditions, so they formed unions. By the turn of the 20th century, labor unions destroyed the free market by restricting businesses with rules that crucially penalized the wealthy for being successful. The labor unions' desire to maintain these rights were campaigned through arguments, protests, and riots resulting in an enforcement of regulations such as an increase in pay, a decrease in working hours, and an improvement in working conditions. An increase of wages was one of the key outcomes from the labor union campaigns. Samuel Gompers, an American ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Strikes took place, resulting in conflict between workers and employers. The most influential of the unions being created at the time was the American Federation of Labor union due to its focus on higher wages and improved working conditions for its members. Miners in the mining industry were faced with long working hours, unsafe working conditions and were poorly paid. Most lived in company towers where doctors, schools, and law enforcement were provided by the actual companies in an effort to control the workers. "Companies maintained an oppressive working environment, prohibiting workers from talking or gathering, to discourage the creation of unions." (Habashi, 2011) In 1890 the Unite Mine Workers of America was founded representing workers in the mining sector that fought for collective bargaining. During 1933 and 1936, President Franklin Roosevelt's "New Deal" was created protecting the rights of labor unions and prohibited employers from firing workers who took part in union activities. Labor Unions Today The work force has become extremely competitive over the past decade due to the drop in the economy. • 11. Big Business In The Gilded Age Essay As the age of Reconstruction ended, the Gilded Age of big businesses began in the United States and with it came new jobs and goods for Americans. When new corporations became more successful, it made an immense impact on the economy, the political system and the lives of citizens. Economically, the cost of food and living went down significantly as well as a surplus of jobs. Political leaders were corrupted by big business as their decisions and laws were influenced by the wealthy class' bribes and stealing from the common man. Though mass production allowed goods to be made quicker and in greater quantity, the workers' horrible working conditions and remarkably long hours caused the creation of unions and strikes. Despite the great effect big business had on the economy in the Gilded Age through the decline in the cost of food and fuel, the daily lives of average working–class citizens were negatively impacted by long hours, horrid working conditions leading to unions and a corrupted political system. The use of mass production allowed for an increase of jobs and supply of many goods in the United States and allowed for the cost of goods to decline. The prices of food, the cost of food and fuel and lighting decreased significantly between 1870 and 1900 as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The use of mass production caused for big business to prosper, and created jobs. As such, in the 1930s a major economic downfall occurred known as the Great Depression after the crash of Wall Street where millions of dollars and jobs were lost. • 16. China Labor Watch ( Clw ) CHINA LABOR WATCH – Founded by labor activist Li Qiang in 2000, China Labor Watch (CLW) is a powerful and independent non–profit organization dedicated to protecting the workers rights in China. With the support of the media and the labor organizations, CLW conducts deep investigations and publishes the reports about the sub–standard working conditions and wages in factories in China. The reports not only create awareness among the world community, but also put pressure on the corporations to improve conditions for workers. Apple's Supplier Foxconn, came under intense scrutiny for its suspicious labor practices and suicide by its fourteen young workers at the Foxconn Shenzhen factory in 2010, followed by the explosion in Chengdu factory resulting in 3 deaths and sixteen injuries in 2011. In 2010 CLW also reported about several violations of China labor laws based investigation collected through off–site interviews and from its own staff who had purposefully worked in Foxconn factories as workers to gain real and accurate information. These reports puts a big question mark on the supplier responsibility reports and standards set by Apple. According to CLW, Apple is equally responsible for the China labor law violations and worker suicides as its goal of profit maximization comes at the cost of brutal working conditions at foxconn factories. This is because the quality and price of production material used in manufacturing is pre– determined according to the Apple ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 18. The Pros and Cons of Labor Unions Essay The rise of capitalism as the dominant economic system in the United States made the rise of unions inevitable; given the natural division between those with capital that control the means of production, and labor, who is treated simply as another factor of production (Hodson & Sullivan, 2008). While labor unions have made significant improvements to the working environment, with the regulation of safety, environment, labor and wage; labor unions have also contributed to the decline of U.S. dominance in industries like steel, automotive, education and airlines. In today's global economy, can labor unions continue to be a force for good in the United States, or have they become harmful institutions? Since the birth of the country, labor ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Two years after the infamous Triangle fire, 20,000 workers in Lawrence, Massachusetts; angered over wage cuts and deplorable conditions went on strike, prompting the twin reactions of police brutality and press coverage (Hodson & Sullivan, 2008). "As a result of the strike, not only were wages raised and conditions improved in the textile industry as a whole, but important legislation was also enacted that restricted the exploitation of child and female labor" (Hodson & Sullivan, 2008, p. 132). It is doubtful that working conditions would have evolved to the level of equity we find today, without the sacrifice and activism of unions and their members. While organized labor's storied history demonstrates remarkable achievements, there has been a downside for the American economy. By way of example, the formerly dominant U.S. steel industry serves to remind of an time when poor management, global competition, and union excess were necessary causes of a dramatic and rapid industry decline. U.S. Steel and other steel companies for decades, relied on the tried and true strategies of vertical integration and price control (Hoerr, 1988). In the 1960's, foreign competition from developing countries like South Korea, Taiwan and Brazil entered the market "with low material and labor costs, modern equipment, and the support of government policies" (Hoerr, 1988, p. 99). Because of lower costs and concern over supply created by constant threat of strike, many ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 24. The Rise Of The Big Business Transformed Rural America The rise of the Big Business transformed rural America to an industrialized urban nation that became to be known as the Gilded Age. During this time most Americans worked 10 to 16 hour shifts, 6 days out of the week with a wage that was below the poverty line. Even though they worked extremely inhumane hour shifts, it was barely enough for them and their families to survive. During this era men, women, and children performed harsh labor in factories and mills until their bodies could bear no more. Throughout the age of the big business, children as young as 8 years old were put to work and were denied the chance to go to school, there was no benefits, no medical coverage, and if the workers became injured while on the job it was overlooked and was seen as if nothing had happened and were fired and replaced by someone else. Workers were being taken advantage of, but they realized something had to be done in order for change to occur, so they unionized. An important factor they acknowledged was that there were more workers than owners so unions were created. During this period of time unions were extremely needed in order to improve working conditions, protect workers, and fight for higher wages. Likewise, Unions were successful, because during this time the seed was planted toward unity and as of today we can appreciate safer working conditions, higher wages, and more opportunity. It does not mean that we are not dedicated to our jobs, just that we merely need that down time to be human beings. However, we continue to give our all to our employers, even at the expense of our family. It is not necessary for Americans to work over a 40–hour workweek because if we were able to spend more time with our families and have a better quality of life with a decrease in stress and health problems, society would benefit greatly. There is a good chance that we are all guilty of overworking. We often neglect our families, our diets, our stress level, and most of all, our sanity. National Cranberry Case Analysis National Cranberry is a cooperative of berry growers around North America that share common production facilities and for the last several years have been experiencing capacity bottlenecks among other issues. After initial analysis, two main factors that contributed to a decrease in production were found. The first issue in the business is that the supply trucks and drivers delivering the harvest were not properly organized and there was not enough space and organization to allow for smooth offloading of several trucks a day. The second major issue is the rampant absenteeism and need for overtime work based on shortage of workers. This has driven the cost of running the business up and drastically reducing profitability. A lesser but ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Nevertheless, some trucks had to wait for up to 3 hours to dump their loads which was solely attributed to the holding bins which could only hold 7200bbls total of both dry and wet berries. Additionally, out of the 27 holding bins, only 11 were actually set up to hold wet berries which made the constrain even more difficult. Once that section of the plant was full there was very little that crews in receiving could do to alleviate the problem. In the next section of the production process, dechaffing was possible at a rate of 4500bbl/hour which over a 12 hour period would be more than enough capacity even on the heaviest barrel deliveries days. Where the bottlenecks really start to become apparent is in the drying stage of the wet berries where only 3 drying stations existed and in a combined effort could only dry at 600bbl/hour. In the harvest of 1980, there was 58% of the total capacity coming in as wet berries which was already over the capacity based on a 12 hour day. In 1981, the harvest in set to bring in 70% of the berries as wet berries which would further slow the overall process. Assuming that the Kiwanee dumpers, dechaffing and de–stoning machinery were all working to their full capacity of 4500bbl/hour, the increase to 70% wet berries would overload the driers within the first few hours of production. • 38. Homework Is Too Much Homework Now I don't want to get off on a rant here, but school is giving us way too much homework and projects. We have only been in school for two months and we have had at least two projects for every core class except math, and a final 8th grade project. Everyday we wake up, go to school, and come home, easy right? No, everyday that we come home from school we have homework. Each class gives us at least 30 minutes worth of homework. 6 classes a day times 30 minutes is 180 minutes, which is 3 hours. We also need at least 1 hour for dinner and breaks in between. I go to school for about 7 hours (7 hours and 15 minutes to be exact) and when we get home, they expect us to spend at least another three hours practicing what we learned in school. Also, on nights that we have projects, that adds an extra two hours. My brain feels like it's older than my grandma! Also, not to brag, but I'm a pretty smart student, and teachers think that just because we are smart, we should get more work than everybody else. In honors math, we have to get more class work done in a shorter period of time, and more homework than everybody else. We tend to want to get good grades in every class, average grades are not enough for us. We have to, and I mean have to, get at least a 6 and if not higher, if we get a grade lower than that we are not satisfied and unhappy. To get that higher grade on homework and projects, we spend more time than an average person would, so giving us more work is very time ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 40. Taking a Look at Professional Procrastination By definition, the act of procrastinating is to postpone an event until a later time. We as humans have all delayed something in our lives, either related to school, work, or social activities. Although anything in life has the potential to be postponed or put off until the last–minute, procrastination is more commonly seen in schools and colleges among students. There are several reasons why students put off assignments, but, the main reason is that they do not take pleasure in doing their homework. Even though some students are unsuccessful in their dawdling, many students are often successful and benefit from saving coursework until the "last minute". Taking a look at this process, we can see that procrastinating may actually save time and energy. The first step in the procrastination process is to make a conscious decision to postpone a project until a later date. Upon receiving a homework assignment, students will often look over what they will be asked to do. If they are discontented by what they are presented with, thoughts such as "I do not want to do this" or "I will do this later" will spring up in their brain. After a student has either of the previous thoughts, they then put the assignment in their folder or binder and do not touch it until later. Frequently a student has no motivation to begin an essay, for example, right after receiving the prompt because there is no pressure to complete it in a short time. This essay is going to be about the difference of a six–hour work day and a eight–hour work day. Most people would like the have six–hour work days so they can get off earlier but they wont make as much money as they would on a eight–hour work day. A six–hour work day for most people isnt gonna do as much as a eight–hour work day would. They cant make as much money only working six hours out of the day because that wouldnt be enough money to raise a family. Studies have showed that six–hour work days are harder on the body then eight–hour work days because they have a very short ammount of time to get the work they need to get done completed by the end of their shifts. Six–hour work days require the employer to come up with the money to hire more staff to cover the now–empty shifts. Eight– hour work days are fair because the human body doesn't start to fully function till about four hours after they have woken up. Eight–hour work days also make it to where the employees are making more money and putting less stress on their bodies to where they are not completely exhausted when they get home. • 47. The International Company 's Workers ' Human Rights Essay Globalization is defined as the act of globalizing, or extending to other or all parts of the word. In other words, globalization is that the world has experienced two great waves of gobalization driven by the free trade policies of major trading countries and falling transportation costs. The first wave was from roughly the down of the Industrial Revolution in the 19 century to the World War I, and second has run since 1947. International trade and international migration grew substantially during the first wave, but world trade increased even more rapidly during the first 25 years of the World War II wave. Both periods of gobalization faced significant suspicion about the results of globalization for labor conditions. Therefore, the prupose of this paper is to compare the international company's workers' human rights through the influence of the international trade by using experts' research paper and the data from internet. At the same time that many national governments tried to prevent global work forces from eroding local labor conditions, fleding efforts at international governmance responded to concern that countries with superior labor conditions would be at a competitive disadvantage in international markets. • 49. The Pros And Cons Of Labor Unions Around the 20th century, the rich believed in Social Darwinism, an ideology where rich are the ones to survive while the rich are the ones to become extinct. Due to this, the working conditions were in need of improvement, for the rich did not care about the working class. People who believed the illusion that one day they will become rich tried getting jobs in factories and other places. The rich were getting richer, and the poor were getting poorer, all while workers suffer horrible working conditions. The creation of labor unions helped improve these conditions. Some may argue that labor unions essentially destroyed the free market by restricting the actions of the wealthy. However, although half of this argument holds some truth, labor unions did not destroy the free market. On the contrary, labor unions improved the free market by creating laws and improvements for workers in the United States through revolts and strikes. For instance, in Albert Parsons' testimony to the House of Representatives Select Committee on Causes of the General Depression in Labor and Business in 1879, Parsons believed that workers should have an 8–hour work day. To achieve this, Parsons attempted to rally people together to go against the rich in the Haymarket Square Riots. During this event, Parsons incited a riot which was ensued by workers wanting reform in order to obtain an 8– hour work day. American Labor Movement: Development of Unions Essays The American Labor Movement of the nineteenth century developed as a result of the city–wide organizations that unhappy workers were establishing. These men and women were determined to receive the rights and privileges they deserved as citizens of a free country. They refused to be treated like slaves, and work under unbearable conditions any longer. Workers joined together and realized that a group is much more powerful than an individual when protesting against intimidating companies. Unions, coalitions of workers pursuing a common objective, began to form demanding only ten instead of twelve hours in a work day. However, the Knights of Labor was a relatively weak organization, and eventually fell apart. (www.planetpapers.com/ Assets/306.shtml, 2) In 1886, the American Federation of Labor (AF of L) was formed and replaced the Knights of Labor. To protect the skilled labor of America from being reduced to beggary and to sustain the standard of American workmanship and skill, the trade unions of America have been established." Since the Industrial Revolution changed the way many people worked, working longer hours in factories involved having to work in harsh conditions, causing illness and disease. This was hard because laborers worked long hours with very small chances of an advancement. Because of this, many workers resorted to strikes or stopping until their demands were met, but ended up giving up and going back to work. Since working long hours is bad for the laborers health, adjusting the time spent working to eight hours will help workers become more attentive, while also making the unemployment rates decrease. This disease has been found by physicians and physiologists to be alarmingly prevalent among industrial workers, mostly because of the strain of immense work hours. Furthermore, people developed physical stress because of the substantial shift from having an economy based mostly on agriculture to one based on mainly manufacturing. Even though in factory work, where no particular diseases threaten, disease would be spread quickly. Apart from neurasthenia, many other illnesses spread. Majority of the diseases spread would be the cause of over fatigue. Orientation, By Daniel Orozco In the story, Orientation, wrote by Daniel Orozco, he captures the true spirit of the stereotypical workplace, by using the lack of dialogue, humor, and repetition. It is conveys a sense of workplace alienation. This story is all about the tension between people's essential identity, crucial interconnectedness, and collaboration required of workers. He shows a new employee the ropes. It features a deadpan mix of senseless instructions. Orozco describes the absurd work environment, and he shows the readers to see the wide variety of social absurdities that employees can find in the workplace. Orozco gives a lot information about the work expectations and his co–workers' private life; he also implies some perspectives about bullying in his workplace. He brings out the typical office affair to reflect human relationships. In this story, Orozco is trying to show the absurdities put on the expectations at work. Emphasis is given to the most pointless details at work. The author in this story states, " We pace our work according to the eight–hour workday. Because the pay is so low, these workers are forced to work overtime in order to provide for themselves and their families. Workers are also forced to work without pay, as they are forced to make early morning off–the– clock meetings. Many workers were also forced to take vacation time, instead of pay. China Labor Watch also alleges that at least three factories (TSMD, SEHZ and SSKMT) have hired underage workers, and compensate them the same as adults, 206 U.S. dollars. Chinalaborwatch.org has said that if a worker is absent from one day of work without applying for leave, two days pay will be deducted from their monthly salary. The China Labor Watch has discovered that many children laborers are working in Samsung factories without labor contracts, and many workers are working 11 hour shifts, but only being paid for 10 hours. China Labor Watch's investigation into Shinyang revealed 15 labor violations. One such violation had to do with child labor, with these children being paid less. Wantchinatimes.com even alleges that some children would work these 11–hour shifts, six days a week. These child laborers were also paid only 70% of what their adult counterparts were paid. "These children, without a labor contract, do the same work for the same long night–shift hours and at the same intensity as adult workers but are paid one–third less." The Shinyang factory also ... • 59. Impact Of Industrialization On Child Labor During Industrialization in America, children were working and being mistreated, adults were suffering as well. Industrialization happened in the late 1800's when people no longer wanted to work in farms and decided to move to the city. Factories and mines needed workers but they would pay them very little. Children were working instead of going to school and getting an education. This only benefited the bosses of factories and railroads because they were the ones making the most money. While the workers were struggling to be healthy and earn at least 2 dollars a day. Children were in danger of getting their arm or leg seriously injured. The impacts of Industrialization on workers was mostly negative because they were allowing workers to work in dangerous areas for long hours and their health was being affected negatively. The response for these two topics did not improve as the years passed. On the other hand, child labor was also an impact which its response did improve. Workers worked long hours. According to primary source document G which was created in 1894, "The most of the men got under two dollars per pay." This document is titled, "Homestead and Its Perilous Trades Impressioning of a Visit." • 63. Factory Workers In Henry Ford's Factory As the first paragraph states, in 1914 factory workers worked about twelve hours a day until it was cut four hours down to eight hour workdays in 1914 by Henry Ford in his factorys. The workers productivity skyrocketed and ever since then eight hour work days have been the norm and it has worked well. Even most schools have classes that are almost eight hours a day and kids productivity seems to be doing fine. Changing the normal eight hours that has been the norm for over a hundred years could ruin companies by causing substantial profit loss when they have to hire new employees to cover the empty shifts that six–hour days would leave. There are also more issues for the employees. Like the second passage states, the employees hours ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 65. Australia in the Early 1900s Australia in the early 1900s has developed a reputation as a 'working man's paradise' for its greater opportunity to success and an egalitarian society. However not all workers proved this to be true. In order to determine this statement, Issues to be discussed include firstly the hours of work for different genders, secondly the working conditions and finally the dispute for the right to fair treatment to women and Aboriginal natives throughout the 19th century. In order to create Australia's image as a working man's paradise, workers gained rights to speak. The first of these issues to be discussed are the hours of work. The balanced working time of eight–hour day movement was introduced in the mid 19th century. It was conducted by trade unions for the right of shorter working hours suitable Australia's harsh climate. This fairer working condition of eight–hour day has succeeded by the end of the century, when the government introduced fairer laws in the late 1890s which attempted to reduce working hours and give workers Saturday afternoon off. This achievement established a national standard that was aspired by the rest of the world and formed the basis of Australia's reputation as a 'working man's paradise'. Even though the eight–hour day movement were widespreading, there was only a minority of workers initially won the Eight–Hour Day. Overtime working had caused stress on the workers as male death had a large increasing throughout 1890 to 1914 from being over tired. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The reason the scientific managers are said to have opposed the demand for shorter hours was because worktime reform tends to unite workers: Taylor's ideal of a "high–priced man", set apart from his fellows by the desire for premium pay, translated easily into managerial practice regarding wages. Cuts in hours, in contrast, would have had to influence whole departments, producing the kind of group feeling that was anathema to Taylor[3, pp. 136–7]. Journal of Management History Vol. 1 No. 2, 1995, pp. 8–25. © MCB University Press, 1355–252X Finally, Roediger asserts that Taylor had little concern with worker physiology and that the scientific managers denied that the psychology of individual workers played a complex part in the determination of how hard they laboured. Rather, it is claimed, Taylorism relied on mechanics, deskilling, isolation and wage incentives to induce workers to labour at the prescribed pace: Thus Taylorism undercut the older rationales for securing cooperation from a healthy workforce through reduction in hours. The standard guidebook of the Taylorists, published in 1911, featured a daily time clock, calibrated to the hundredth of an hour. It was a ten–hour clock[3, p. 137]. Indicative of the ease with which many analysts accept that they can vilify the scientific management movement, Roediger does not offer any evidence ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 69. The Riot, The Pullman Strike, And The Homestead Strike In the late 1800s and the early 1900s, labor was anything but easy. Factory workers faced long hours, low pay, high unemployment fears, and poor working conditions during this time. Life today is much easier in comparison to the late 1800s. Americans have shorter days, bigger pay and easier working conditions. Not comparable to how life is today, many riots sparked, and citizens began to fight for equal treatment. Along with other important events, the Haymarket Riot, the Pullman Strike, and the Homestead strike all play a vital role in illustrating labor's struggle to gain fair and equitable treatment during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Treatment during the late 1800s is much different from how Americans are treated in daily life now. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the 1800s and early 1900s working conditions were much harsher than now. Long hours and small wages made up a day in the life of someone living in the late 1800s to the early 1900s. The Haymarket Riot was the result of the bombing in Chicago. "In the summer 1886 the campaign for an eight–hour day, long a rallying cry that united American laborers, culminated in a national strike on May 1, 1886. Between 300,000 and 500,000 workers struck across the country. In Chicago, police forces killed several workers while breaking up protestors at the McCormick reaper works. Labor leaders and radicals called for a protest at Haymarket Square the following day, which police also proceeded to break up. But as they did, a bomb exploded and killed seven policemen. Police fired into the crowd, killing four. The deaths of the Chicago policemen sparked outrage across the nation and the sensationalization of the "Haymarket Riot" helped many Americans to associate unionism with radicalism" (Yawp). • 71. Globalization And Corporate Expansion Of American Companies The globalization and corporate expansion of American companies has promoted inequality in the United States and the world, largely through means defined to be inhumane. Corporate America has embraced a 'hands–free' method of globalization. By both outsourcing labor and targeting more consumer groups, especially those yearning for the American Dream, corporate America has successfully increased profits. Almost everyone on earth is feeling the negative effects of corporate America's actions. By outsourcing labor, prohibiting unions, disadvantaging women, and driving wages down, globalization and corporate expansion advocates for inequality in both the United States and the rest of the world. By moving labor to places outside of the United States, American companies are able to secure cheap labor. This cheap labor negatively affects the lives of Americans and foreigners. Some places even paying daily wages below the cost of a loaf of bread. Not only are the companies driving up their profits, they are globalizing their brand at almost no cost to them and a massive cost to everyone else. Anywhere litter flows with the brand of an American company, is free advertising to them. The crushed Coca–Cola can or the half–rotted McDonald's bag, all are examples of a free ad. According to John A. Powell and S.P. Udayakumar, "The style of globalism pushed by the United States has favored the free movement and protection of capital, while being at best indifferent and at worst hostile to ... • 73. Eight-Hours Research Paper Eight–Hour Days Work Just Fine Some people think that an eight–hour shift at work is to much. Shorter shifts mean less money for everyone, it also means more problems. The working industry already has enough problems and the standard working time is not one of them. There is not a good explantion as to why we should even condsider making a work day standard into six–hours, its only a two–hour difference from the current standerd, it's not a big enough difference to try and make six–hours the new standard. Imagine everything you do in a normal day at your job, now imagine everything you do with two–hours less time to do all of your work. It would be rather difficult don't you think? Workers would have to work even harder to get the things that needs to be done completed. Many workers would feel more wore out than the usual, and would get paid less for doing everything they could do more efficently in eight–hour time frame. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But having an eight–hour shift isn't a big differnce and workers do get 10–20 minute breaks to recharge. Working an eight hour shift could be a little tiring but the money you make is much better than that of a six–hour shift. This is why we should keep the standard work day at eight ... • 75. The Effects Of Haymarket Bombing On American Labor Movement In his book Death in the Haymarket, James Green recounted the American labor movement in the late 1800s. The main focus of Green's book was the bombing of Haymarket, which occurred on May 4 in 1886. Beginning as a peaceful protest promoting the eight–hour work day, a bomb was thrown causing devastating consequences. The Haymarket bombing almost ended the labor movement altogether, with unjustified trials and fear implemented amongst all Americans. However, it is important to know that the Haymarket bombing is not just an isolated event. From wage cuts to people going on strike, labor unions starting up, to almost losing the labor movement altogether. The Haymarket bombing was the fuse to an event larger bomb known as the labor movement. Although the Haymarket bombing is an extremely important event, it should be seen in a much larger context rather than an isolated event. The Haymarket bombing was an important incident in America's history nevertheless, it falls under a much bigger category which is the labor movement. The labor movement was started because of the unjust ways that labor had on the working class in America during the 1800s. It first started out with wage cuts for the working class in America, which then led to an increasing amount of strikes. Then leading to the formation of labor unions, which is the people who were attending the meeting at Haymarket the day of the bombing. So if the labor movement had never started, then the bombing at Haymarket may have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. Analysis Of The Story ' Orientation ' By Daniel Orozco In the story, Orientation, wrote by Daniel Orozco, he captures the true spirit of the stereotypical workplace, by using the lack of dialogue, humor, and repetition. The story conveys a sense of workplace alienation. If you have twelve hours of work in your in–box, for example, you must compress that work into the eight–hour day. If you have one hour of work in your in–box, you must expand that work to fill the eight– hour day" ( Orozco). In this statement, the work is not the focus here; the time clock has become focused, which has pointed out the problem that many companies have. • 79. Upton Sinclair's The Jungle: An Analysis In The Jungle, Author Upton Sinclair uses Jurgis, the main character of the book, as an example of what the common working man's life was like. Jurgis, along with all his family are Lithuanian immigrants, who just immigrated to the U.S. Not knowing the foreign culture, they were hired by a meatpacking plant. This plant, ran by corrupt politicians, applied strict rules and regulations; not reimbursing/paying their workers enough, long hours, etc. Jurgis joined a Union, after realizing he should fight for his rights as a laborer. Sinclair's opinion about labor rights was, that the common working man should fight for, and be granted more rights to increase their chance of supporting their families. One case of when Sinclair shows his opinion ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For after all the hard work a man did, he was only paid for part of it." (Sinclair 95). Sinclair hits two rights that laborers were fighting for in the unions in this quote. The first right Sinclair spoke of was of long working hours, when he said "And so on Christmas Eve Jurgis worked till nearly one o'clock in the morning, and on Christmas Day he was on the killing beds at seven o'clock.". Sinclair visually paints a picture in the reader's mind of how long the common working man's hours were. The other right Sinclair spoke of was unfair pay when he wrote "All this was bad; and yet it was not the worst. For after all the hard work a man did, he was only paid for a part of it.". Sinclair suggests how unethical the wages were with emotion. The reader can almost picture how little a laborer might get paid for his long hours of work. Sinclair united these two rights he thought laborers should fight for, into one powerful sentence. In conclusion, Upton Sinclair has a strong opinion that the typical working man should quarrel for, and be granted more rights. When they get more rights, they boost their chance of supporting their families. Sinclair used his novel The Jungle to express many things about what life was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
