German Immigration To Texas
Texas is a wonderful state where there is various cultures, traditions, ethnic groups, and religions such as the Germans, Irish, Polish, and more. Texas
is made up of various ethnic groups that are all special in their own unique way. Many Europeans groups immigrated Texas during the 1820s. There is
a total population of 26.96 million of people in Texas. It is the second largest state in population in the U.S. after California. When Frederick Ernst
obtained land in Austin, Texas the German–Texan culture started in 1831. Within a couple of years other German families, such as the Kleberg's, a
family later to become associated with the King Ranch in South Texas. Germans traveled by ships and wagons pulled by horses. The reason why some
Germans immigrated during 1848 was because of the political problems in Germany. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

they met along the way aided them and helped them. They escaped at the time when the tribes were going to pick pears, so food was not a
problem at this time." (sjsu.edu). "The Spaniards decided to build rafts and leave Florida by the sea." (tshaonline.org). "Each raft was loaded with
fewer than fifty men, and rose only six inches above the water. They had to sail their rafts as closely to the shore as possible in case something
were to happen. They left on September 22, 1528, and all was going well until they crossed what is now the Mississippi River. Thrown off course
by the strong winds, the five rafts eventually landed off the coast of Texas. (tshaonline.org). "By the spring of 1529, only thirteen Spaniards and an
African slave were still alive, along with Cabeza de Vaca. Some of the men thought that he was dead because he had been gone for so long. Twelve
of the fourteen men had headed towards the coast of Mexico." (tshaonline.org). "They finally landed at a place that they named the Island of
Misfortune, somewhere around what is now Galveston, Texas. Cabeza de Vaca and his men lived out on the island with theKarankawa Indians from
1529 to 1534, and were eventually separated due to a state of semi–slavery."(americanjourneys.org). After Cabeza de Vaca and his men were separated
from the Indians, he used his self–teaching skills and taught himself how to become a healer, or a doctor. "He explored all along the coast of East

The Legend Of Galveston Island-Personal Narrative
As I stared at the once–working cartridge in my hands, I felt as though someone had had snapped a chord inside of me; my cheeks ached from
suppressed tears. I looked up at my dad, hoping he could fix it for me. However, he simply shook his head and said, "I'm sorry, I can't." "But Eli said a
friend of his left their game in their pockets and it went through the wash–cycle and it still worked afterward," I replied, desperately hoping for any bit
of good news to save my precious game as I began to lose control of the floodgates on my face. "Brandon," he soothed, "This was a hurricane. It's a lot
worse than a wash–cycle." After trying desperately to fix my most prized PokГ©mon game for 30 minutes, but to no avail, I buried my face into my
dad's shoulder and started to bawl. I would not know until years later that he cried too, not because I had lost my game, but because he felt powerless
to help me feel better when I needed him to fix something the most. I was eleven years old after hurricane Ike had devastated Galveston Island. Before
that point, I never realized how much the seemingly silly game that my cousin had introduced me to meant to me. I thought back to the times before
Ike came, before I lost my game, before the storm that destroyed cartridge that I held so dear even ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At the time, I was devastated by what lay in my hands, despite the fact that I had three other PokГ©mon games in my possession. A few years later,

through hard times, but I never truly appreciated its value until I lost it. I recalled how well I was able to cope with the evacuation from my home, the
troubling times that came after Ike, and the tragedies that followed after that

March 2, 2017 The Great Galveston Hurricane
Galveston, Texas is located 50 miles southeast of Houston. It is known as a barrier island on the Texas Gulf Coast of the United States. The city
Galveston, Texas was the home of around 37,000 residents in the early 1900's. This island grew from being a small settlement into one of the
wealthiest cities in the country. It was normal for people to visit Galveston, Texas for it was known as a "tourist attraction". There was always the idea of
building a seawall to protect Galveston from future hurricanes but it was never built. Although many hurricanes had hit the city several times in the
past (before 1900) no one would have thought that a hurricane that would ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Before the storm, the highest point of Galveston, Texaswas 8.7feet (2.7meters), but after the hurricane, it had elevated 15.7 feet (depth of the water on

On September 10th a message was sent out to Governor Joseph D. Sayers and President William McKinley saying, "I have never been deputized by
the mayor and Citizen's Committee of Galveston to inform you that the city of Galveston is in ruins." It took a long time to finally get the word out of
the hurricane because the damage was so bad and all telegraph lines and bridges to the mainland were down.
Ships were left stranded and wrecked miles away from moorings. Thousands of homes were washed away into the sea. Approximately 3,600 buildings
were destroyed. Everything that was destroyed was bulldozed 15 blocks from the beach. The damage cost was 20 million (700 million today). It was
the third costliest hurricane in U.S. history. 8,000–12,000 of the 37,000 people that lived in Galveston, Texas died, which was 20% of the population
that was lost. From the remaining survivors, 30,000 were left

Although the city of Galveston doing a lot of work to be tourism friendly town, the total likelihood of going on an island decreases with each year
because of oil spillages and nature pollution caused in the last few decades.
Galveston Bay where there was a state of emergency, is a favorite place of migratory birds, the peak of which must come in the near future. Also,
environmentalists fear that the incident will result in contamination of several nearby nature reserves. The collision of the barge and cargo ship near
the city of Galveston in the US state of Texas took place on March 22, 2014. As a result, damage to the barge in the Gulf of Mexico emerged, according
to latest figures, 640 tons of fuel oil. Almost 6 years ago, 22 April 2010,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With every year since 2011 the amount of people coming down to Galveston was decreasing. Of course there were still a lot of people on July 4th
and other holidays, but the total amount of tourists on the beach in the early spring and late summer was decreasing with every year in my opinion of
a lifeguard who could see how many people are coming down and when are they leaving. Last year of 2015 when the seaweed was everywhere the
amount of tourists was so minimal, that rumors started going around among lifeguards that Galveston won't be able to survive another summer with
such a low amount of tourists.
In conclusion, the only way Galveston return its high revenue is to return the high percentage of tourists coming and wishing to stay longer, which
requires Galveston Park Board to make sure that tourists won't get down into seaweed. We must keep our beach clean for it be desirable for other
people to come. Although we cannot really do anything about oil issue, we can do better on keeping our beaches

Galveston Bay Environmental Analysis
The most prominent geologic feature of the upper Texas coast is the Galveston Bay, covering to the extent of within 600 square miles, it's one of

Essay On How Did Cabeza De Vaca Survive
How Did Cabeza de Vaca Survive? Being one of four survivors out of a crew of 250 on the expedition Cabeza de Vaca was a part of, was not a walk in
the park. Cabeza was on a ship setting sail for the New World, in 1527, when his ship was blown off course and landed him in Galveston Island,
Texas. The Native Americans living inGalveston eventually became his slave owners for two years before he escaped. He encountered many obstacles
including starvation, thirst, unfamiliarity, slavery, etc. He endured all of these over a course of seven years, before he made it out alive. The question
that remains is, how did Cabeza de Vaca survive all of this? Cabeza survived, because he was very resourceful, he hadthe advantage of being able to ...

A good example of this is when the Natives believed that the Spaniards wanted to steal everything and keep it for themselves, so it says in Document
D. By being able to communicate, Cabeza was able to show them that they were of use to the Natives. Document D also states that Cabeza and his
fellow survivors had returned everything that the Natives had given to them. This evidence helps explain his survival because, he created a trust and
balance between the two, that could have very well saved their lives. Cabeza would not have had this if he had not been able to communicate with the
Natives.
A third reason Cabeza was able to survive was he was useful to the Natives. Good evidence of this is when Cabeza proved how useful he was when
he saved one of the Natives. Document C shows a report of Cabeza using his knife to cut open the man's chest and removing an arrow. Cabeza
stitched the man up and he was healed. This act made Cabeza of use to the Natives, because they realized that keeping him alive and able to heal
others was important to them. This evidence also explains how Cabeza stayed alive, because without Cabeza showing himself to be of use to the
Natives, they may have seen him as a threat and killed him right then and there.
Cabeza survived, because he was very resourceful, he had the advantage of being able to communicate with those he encountered, and he was

The beautiful coastline of Galveston has such a peaceful presents unlike any other. It's hard to believe that this serene place was once the epicenter of
one of america's most devastating natural disasters. To this day it is so infamous it needs no name only a title, The Great Storm.
Before the sky turned gray and the sea became wicked, business was booming for galveston. Trade with Europe had capitalized the marketing world
and with cotton at the center of it all. The humidity from the gulf was just right for cotton to grow wonderfully. Back in the 1900s they did not have
the technology we have today. The only way we knew a storm was coming was from ships that had gone through it and islands such as cuba reporting
bad weather. A few days before the storm made landfall ships had reported going through some rough weather conditions as well as Cuba, Florida, and
Louisiana had all reported storm related damage reports. One day before the storm hit galveston the U.S Weather Bureau sent out a storm warning
ranging from Pensacola, Florida to Galveston, Texas. Very few people took this warning seriously because most meteorologist thought the storm would

At the edge of the 19th century, Galveston, Texas was roaring with a occupancy of roughly 40,000 residents. Galveston had become a flourishing

The 1900's storm came to town with devastating winds reaching up to 130–140 miles per hour and storm surges that climbed to 15 feet. The death toll

east coast and eventually exit into the Atlantic. However a region of high pressure pushed the storm west into the Gulf of Mexico, where conditions
were ideal to strengthen the storm and turn it into a devastating hurricane." This being said, when they did realize the storm was coming, they tried to
alert the surrounding areas to get to higher ground but many tourists and occupants of the island declined because it was "Just another storm." says a

Battle Of San Jacinto Battle Analysis
The Battle of San Jacinto is an interesting event for evaluation through battle analysis. Although fought between the independent country of Texas and
Mexico, it has been adopted into the psyche of U.S. History as a major battle that has a significant contribution to the general history of the U.S. Much
like the Alamo, the Battle of San Jacinto relied heavily on imported forces from varying places throughout the U.S. to supplement Texas troops, making
the interwoven nature of the Texas battle in U.S. history logical. The Battle of San Jacinto has been selected for a battle analysis due to its
prominence in U.S. history, but also because of a heightened level of bias that often appears in the re–telling of the narrative of this battle. One

How the Galveston Hurricane affected Texas "Human bodies bobbed facedown in the water, bumping against the boat" ("Anderson vii"). By
September 7, 1900, Galveston was the 4th largest city in Texas ("Galveston"). It was a growing and flourishing port city of 37,000 (resources); and
one of the wealthiest cities in the country ("Galveston"). On September 8, 1900 a powerful hurricane slammed into Galveston ("Galveston"). Its'
highest wind speed recorded before the anemometer blew away was 100 mph, but the speeds were estimated as high as 135 mph ("Galveston"). Over
3,600 buildings were destroyed in the hurricane causing 30,000 people to be homeless ("Galveston"). A 15–foot storm surge engulfed the entire island
leaving the highest point of the island just over 8 feet above sea level ("Galveston"). Evacuation was almost impossible ("Galveston"). At first their

Economic Impact Industries were forced to move to Houston ("Martinez"). This caused a loss on huge sources of money for Galveston that
otherwise would have been able to give Galveston a little bit of recovery. Individual losses plus public property losses such as paving, water works,
schools, hospitals, and churches totaled to around, if not over, 30 million ("Resources"). Most of these losses would have had to been rebuilt
immediately to keep the future of the younger people in the correct road to success. Because of all of the losses in the hurricane, Galveston never
recovered economically ("Martinez"). Galveston is still at a large loss of money that it will probably never recover in our lifetimes. "The Texas

On Friday evening, September 7, 1900, many of the 37,000 residents of Galveston, Texas, were settling down to dinner, few if any of them concerned
about the steady 15 mph northerly wind rattling their windows. Within 48 hours, at least 8,000 of the townspeople would be dead, victims of the single

to the Western Union office in Houston. At five o'clock the anemometer recorded winds of 102 mph before itself was carried away in a rush. Like
that, the full fury of the storm was upon the island. Waters from the Gulf of Mexico and Galveston Bay quickly rose to meet each other, effectively
swallowing the island.
Throughout the night, the people of Galveston fought to survive. Buildings and homes began collapsing; blowing debris killed or maimed many
people who managed to remain above the rising tide. Water poured through second story windows, forcing hundreds into the ocean where they were
drowned or killed by wind driven debris. The tide reached 15 feet with breakers more that 25 feet. Many survivors, including Isaac, his three daughters
and brother, spent the night clinging to the remains of their homes.
By the morning, floodwaters had drained back into the sea. The corpses of people and animals lay intermingled through out the island; some were
struck down in the street by debris, while others were crushed beneath their shelter or drowned. At least 6,000 to 7,000 Galveston resident were dead.
Isaac survived along with his 3 daughters and younger brother Joe, but Isaac's wife Cora did not survive. Her body was found a few weeks later,
identified by her engagement ring, which from then on Isaac wore.

The Yellow Rose Of Texas
Texas is well known for its history throughout time. Following the history of Texas, there are many different myths and legends. From the First Texans
to the Legend of Houston, the oil industry all the way to the myth of the Cowboy Culture. I'm going to talk about just ten of these myths and legends
that I find interesting. The Yellow Rose ofTexas is about a young slave woman by the name of Emily West Morgan in the antebellum era in Texas.
The myth has it that Emily was the reason that Santa Anna lost the Battle of Jacinto, by distracting him during Houston's surprise attack. According
to the legend, Santa Anna was attracted to Emily and she uses this to help distract Santa Anna from his military duties. Thus allowing Houston to

The Blocker Burn Unit At The University Of Texas Medical...
Introduction The Blocker Burn Unit is a six bed Burn Intensive Care Unit located at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston.
It has a long and storied history of providing innovative burn care to its patients. The Burn unit was initially founded after a massive explosion in
Texas City Harbor that injured hundreds of people in 1944. Since inception, the unit has dealt with disaster both fabricated and natural. In 2008, the
BBU was one of only a handful of services to remain open and operational after Hurricane Ike landed and dealt massive injury to UTMB. The BBU
not only sustained operations but also briefly expanded to provide pediatric burn care when Shriners Burns Hospital was subsequently unable to reopen
post hurricane. This paper will detail the realities confronted by the BBU both currently, and in the future, with an exploration as to those implications
on fiscal outlook and provision of care.
Current Realities of the Blocker Burn Unit (BBU)
Burn Care Hospitals The American Burn Association (ABA) is the accrediting body for burn centers in the United States. Currently the number of
ABA verified centers listed is 64. Other ABA verified center sin Texas include the Hermann Memorial Burn Unit in Houston, the Parkland Burn Unit in

Human Culture Research Paper
The journey of prehistoric human culture on the Texas coast begins with how hunting and gathering populations adapted to the opportunities and
limitations of their shoreline and nearby prairie environments. All the while using limited technology strengthened by first–hand knowledge about the
location and seasonal availability of important subsistence resources within their homeland. Before my bioregion is explored, its best that I depict the
history of the state that I live that spreads across the millennia. When European explorers and colonists first arrived in the region, beginning in the
1500s, the indigenous coastal peoples practiced a mix of subsistence economies which included rigorous fishing in the shoreline bays and lagoons,...

The coastal population density was moderately high, and people spent much of the annual cycle living in large shoreline fishing camps that housed
several hundred people during peak fishing seasons. The coastline as we see it today is, from a geologic perspective, a very recent phenomenon that
dates back only about 3,000 years. In fact, prior to around 8,000 B.C., the area of the modern shoreline was high and dry, with the Gulf coast far to the
east of its present position. This is because, in earlier millennia, global sea level was as much as 300 feet lower, with much of the world's water
supply inaccessible in vast continental ice sheets and montane glaciers that were far more extensive than those of modern times. The Pleistocene era,
or Ice Age, had markedly lower global temperatures than those of historical times. The final cold phase of the Pleistocene was around 20,000 years
ago, after which rising global temperatures caused the continental ice sheets and mountain glaciers to begin a gradual melting process, with the result
that sea level began to rise rapidly over the next 10,000 years (Hester, 1995).
As sea level rose, shorelines around the world moved progressively father inland. By 8,000 B.C. the sea had inundated major river valleys along the

The Legacy Of Isaac Monroe Cline
Isaac Monroe Cline was one of the era's new scientists who believed he knew everything there was to be known about the motions of clouds and the
behavior of storms. Isaac was the chief of the United States Weather Service bureau in Galveston at this time. The idea of a hurricane destroying the
city of Galveston baffled him. As rain started to fall in the city with a higher intensity than normal, people were reassured by Isaac's beliefs. He was
completely wrong.
Galveston which is located on Galveston Island is a twenty–nine mile strip of land estimated about two miles off the coast of Texas. With the miles of
beaches and nice weather it was a popular resort and seemed to be headed in the direction to become the New York City of the Gulf Coast. It had also
become a commercial port which was thriving. On September 8th, 1900 this changed. Many vacationers on this day did not pay attention to the
warnings let out by the United States Weather Bureau to get to higher ground. Little did they know a category four hurricane was about to strike the
city becoming the nation's deadliest natural disaster still to this day. About six to eight thousand people lost their lives out of about thirty–six thousand
total on the island. (about 20%) In comparison these deaths were greater than the combined of the Johnstown Flood and San Francisco Earthquake.

Texas Involvment In Slavery Essay
One of the most unique
situations during the period of the Civil War in America was
the involvement of the state of Texas in the Confederacy.
Although it was once its own Republic separate from the
United States of America through annexation, Texas was not
entirely unique when it came to the institution of slavery. Just
like in all other southern states, slavery, and the use of slave
labor, was a major factor of the states agricultural economy.
During the years around and through the Civil War,Texas
became a home for many transient southerners in search of
sanctuary from the almost enviable furthering of
emancipation. Long before the war, Texas had been the
stomping ground for runaway slaves enroute to Mexico and

Although it was separate from the rest of the
United States politically, Texas was becoming more and
more similar to the rest of the South as Northerners moved
into the state and brought their position of anti–slavery with
them. Worried about the future of slavery in Texas, many
slave owners petitioned the immigration of Northerners and
expressed concern that the state might be overrun by pro–
abolitionists. Texas had a history richly imbedded in slavery
and there was little opposition from many of its original
inhabitants. Before long, continued tension between the
Northern states and the slave states began to strengthen as
more people in the North began to desire that the entire
country move towards complete emancipation. Many
citizens and leaders in Texas approached the legislature in
Texas to provide reasoning as to why Texas should continue
to be a slave state. Many of these Texans quoted the bible
as a reference and reasoning as to why it was "right" that
they continue to use "heathen" and "inferior" blacks as labor
for the superior "white dominant" masters. Like all whites in
the South many in Texas feared slave uprisings and revolts
as word of Northern slave emancipation traveled into the

On March 2, 1861 Texas became the seventh state to join the new Confederacy. Texas played a part in the war which this and all future generations of
Texans can be justly proud of. Its people gave their full measure of courage and devotion to the cause. Texas forces distinguished themselves
throughout the war in numerous ways, however one of the most significant was the state proving itself to be all but impregnable to the Union. During
the course of the Civil War, the Union tried four times to take a foothold in the State ofTexas.
As has been indicated, Texas was well–nigh free from military operations by the enemy throughout the period of the war. The state proved to be

There were four Federal vessels in the harbor, the steamer Harriet Lane, which was at the wharf; the brig Westfield, the gun boat Owassee, and the

and took a position in the town, in preparation for an early morning attack next day. Before daybreak on New Year's day, 1863, Magruder opened fire
on the Federals and drove them to the extreme northern end of the island. The cottonclads, in the meantime, arrived in the harbor and attacked the
Harriet Lane. The Confederate boat Neptune was sunk in shallow water, but the Bayou City approached the Harriet Lane so close that she became
entangled in the latter's rigging. The Confederates leaped on board the Federal vessel and a hand–to–hand struggle ensued. After a stubborn resistance,
during which the principal officers of the Harriet Lane were killed, the Federals surrendered. The Westfield, in attempting to leave the harbor, ran
aground and, in order to prevent her from falling into the hands of the Confederates a train was laid to blow up the vessel and the crew abandoned
her. There was some delay in the explosion and fifteen Federals were sent back on board to investigate and remedy the defect. They had no sooner
reached the Westfield than the explosion occurred, and all of the party were killed.

'Santa' to give gifts to the southern children. People in Texas (Confederate) had to celebrate Christmas with the same courage that won them the
Texas Revolution. Everything that they ate were homemade in their kitchen. Then everything they wore was homemade in their bedroom or living

Texas seceded from the Union in early 1861, like many other slaveholding states, and joined the Confederate States of America. It was the last to
secede before the firing Battle of Fort Sumter signaled the beginning of the Civil War and made citizens of the upper South to choose between fighting
against or with their Southern peers. The election of Abraham Lincoln, as well as the threatening of slavery and traditional liberties due to Republican

Galveston Island Case Study
Introduction Galveston Island is rich in history and has population history that archeologist have dated back to Native Americans. It was settled by
Europeans and established as a port for the Republic of Mexico. It was rich in immigration and dominated trade. It has a history of turmoil caused
by war and natural disasters. Galveston Island formed as a typical barrier island. Galveston's formation took place 5000 years ago, as wind and wave
energy along with rising sea water levels moved sand around to form the island. The wave and wind energy is indicative of storm surge often caused
by hurricane interaction. The building up of Galveston Island continued until 3000 years ago. The coastal shoreline continues to change and those
changes appear to be happening more rapidly than once believed. There are several things that impact the changing shoreline of Galveston Island
including; changes in sea level, subsidence, erosion, and destruction of coastal protections like dunes, marshes, and wetlands, all of which are highly

When the sea level rises, this can be due to multiple factors including climate change and subsidence. Climate change and warming reports identify
that "postglacial temperature has increased 13В°F in the Gulf region" (Morton 22). This is important evidence because rising temperatures coincide
with rising sea levels. As sea water warms, it expands and takes up more room causing sea levels to rise. Additionally, melting glacial ice cause the rise

Hurricane Ike : Becoming A Reality Essay

devastation was becoming a reality. Dad, on his way to work, noticed the water rising and the waves splashing over the seawall. He turned the car
around and rushed home. Dad dashed into the house yelling, "If we don't leave immediately, we won't be able to get out! Pack your bags!" We didn't

The Polio Years : A Long Period Of Captivity Essay
Heather Green Wooten's The Polio Years in Texas: Battling a Terrifying Unknown chronicles the history of polio in Texas in a very extensive
timeline. The book goes all the way back to the beginning of the polio epidemic and essentially progresses to the present. The time in this book
certainly exceeds that of, The Captured and Isaac's Storm. The Captured chronicled a long period of captivity, but did not appear to exceed a decade.
Isaac's Storm traced the initial development of Weather Bureau and covered a great period, but did not exceed that of The Polio Years. Several
themes begin to emerge further into the book. Obvious themes included, the support for March of Dimes, impact on families affected by polio, the
growth and development of rehabilitation facilities, and more importantly the response to the disease by Texans. Oddly, Wooten discusses the fact that
other diseases such as, measles, diphtheria, and tuberculosis took more lives than Polio. However, people feared Polio more than the rest. Wooten
attributes polio's terrifying affect to the uncertainty. Several uncertainties such as, how to prevent it, why did some become crippled, why did some
die, and why did it only essentially affected children made polio very terrifying in the 20th century. Texas appeared to have been hit the hardest in
comparison to other states. Wooten's research examined the time during and then after World War II. During this period,Texas saw an immense amount
of polio contractions. Per

Battle Of San Jacinto Case Study
Strategic Setting Depending on the perspective, the strategic factors of the Battle of San Jacinto were either to re–align Texas with the Mexican
government, as it had pulled away in rebellion due to Anglo interference from the U.S. (Pedro, 1921). A second perspective of the strategic factor of the
Battle of San Jacinto had to do with Texans, in particular Anglo Texans from the Southern U.S., wanting to extend the influence of slavery over the
region, intentionally flaunting and ignoring Mexico's anti–slavery polices (Tindall and Shi, 2013). A third perspective, offered by Anderson and
Wooster (2016) is that strategically the Battle of San Jacinto was the result of tyrannical oversight and behaviors by Santa Anna and the Mexican
government over Texas. It should be noted that the strategic factors listed are over–arching causes of the Mexico–Texas War for Independence, which

Fossil Fuels And Its Impact On The Economic, Political,...
Introduction
In 2010, the United States became the world's largest natural gas producer, claiming the top spot that was formerly owned by Russia. The U.S. is
now ranked as one of the world's largest producer of oil and natural gas liquids, creating about 50 percent of its own oil in 2014. The Lone Star State
produces about 35 percent of the country's oil and 23 percent of the country's natural gas. Texas has always been a major center for oil and natural gas
companies starting from the discovery of oil in the early 1900's. Consequently, fossil fuels play a significant role in the economic, political, and social
construct of Texas. However, scientific studies have provided information highlighting the numerous environmental problems that can come from the
production and use of fossil fuels. Should Texas try to eliminate the use of fossil fuels and preserve the environment or do the economic benefits that
come from oil and natural gas production outway the use of cleaner energy sources? How would Texas respond to this situation socially and
economically? How do fossil fuels affect the environment and is it even possible for Texas to only userenewable energy ?
Brief History To tackle this subject, one must understand the how Texas got into the oil and natural gas industry in the first place and how it began to
change Texas politics and economics. The first economically significant discovery of oil happened in 1894 in Navarro County. This discovery led to

other Galveston residents who weathered the storm, but delves further into the issues that left Galveston unprepared that late Summer's day.
3.At the turn of the twentieth century, Americans were especially confident in their technology and mastery over the natural world, that many felt that
inclement and dangerous weather could be predicted so accurately that there was no need to fear. These attitudes in combination with a series of
political problems within the Weather Bureau led to the ignoring of warnings from Cuban meteorologists regarding the storm. In an effort not to cause

Corruption In Isaac's Storm By Erik Larson
EXPAND ON GILDED AGE CORRUPTION IN THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT
Was it innovation or greed and corruption that played a pivotal role in making the United States the leading industrialized nation in the world during
the late 19th Century and early 20th Century, also known as the Gilded Age? In the book, Isaac's Storm byErik Larson the author describes how greed
and corruption by the United States government ultimately leads to poor decisions after a horrific disaster in 1900 [Larson]. In addition,
well–researched essays by Henry Demarest Lloyd and Emma Goldman back up Larson's theory that the Gilded Age was actually a very dark time for
the United States.
Isaac's Storm describes the historical aspects of the national weather service, weather ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"Nature is rich; but everywhere man, the heir of nature, is poor." Lloyd begins his work by complaining about how the rich remain rich and the
poor remain poor; however, as the essay progresses, one can see the accuracy of his views. He references the creation of Adam and Eve, stating that,
"Never since time began have all the sons and daughters of men been all warm, and filled, and all shod and roofed." It's been true throughout history
that because of monopolies that a very small percentage of men control a majority of land and resources. Lloyd states that individuals holding a
majority of resources and land believe that that there is a scarcity; that there is not enough. And in order to survive, in order to be happy, in order to be
prosperous, they must contain and constrain. Men must hold on to any and everything they can get their hands on. The minority has an opposing
viewpoint. It feels that there is an abundance of resources, but because of unequal distribution, there is never enough to go around: "There is too much
iron, too much lumber, too much flour―for this or that syndicate. The majority have never been able to buy enough of anything; but this minority
have too much of everything to sell." Lloyd concludes by expressing that we have become a "mutual deglutition." He states that we have advanced too
quickly and implicates that we are beginning to reverse

(elizabethan –era.org) "By 1528, he was appointed treasurer underneath the explorer Panfilo de Narvaez which reached what is now Tampa Bay,Florida later in the same year." "By September of that year, all of the members of the expedition except for 60 of de Vaca's men had died near the shore of present–day Galveston, Texas." (Biography.com Editors). "During their escape, other tribes that they met along the way aided them and helped them. They escaped at the time when the tribes were going to pick pears, so food was not a problem at this time." They had to sail their rafts as closely to the shore as possible in case something were to happen. They left on September 22, 1528, and all was going well until they crossed what is now the Mississippi River. Thrown off course by the strong winds, the five rafts eventually landed off the coast of Texas. (tshaonline.org). "By the spring of 1529, only thirteen Spaniards and an African slave were still alive, along with Cabeza de Vaca. Some of the men thought that he was dead because he had been gone for so long. Twelve of the fourteen men had headed towards the coast of Mexico." (tshaonline.org). "They finally landed at a place that they named the Island of Misfortune, somewhere around what is now Galveston, Texas. Cabeza de Vaca and his men lived out on the island with theKarankawa Indians from 1529 to 1534, and were eventually separated due to a state of semi–slavery."(americanjourneys.org). After Cabeza de Vaca and his men were separated from the Indians, he used his self–teaching skills and taught himself how to become a healer, or a doctor. • 3. The Legend Of Galveston Island-Personal Narrative As I stared at the once–working cartridge in my hands, I felt as though someone had had snapped a chord inside of me; my cheeks ached from suppressed tears. I looked up at my dad, hoping he could fix it for me. However, he simply shook his head and said, "I'm sorry, I can't." "But Eli said a friend of his left their game in their pockets and it went through the wash–cycle and it still worked afterward," I replied, desperately hoping for any bit of good news to save my precious game as I began to lose control of the floodgates on my face. "Brandon," he soothed, "This was a hurricane. It's a lot worse than a wash–cycle." After trying desperately to fix my most prized PokГ©mon game for 30 minutes, but to no avail, I buried my face into my dad's shoulder and started to bawl. I would not know until years later that he cried too, not because I had lost my game, but because he felt powerless to help me feel better when I needed him to fix something the most. I was eleven years old after hurricane Ike had devastated Galveston Island. Before that point, I never realized how much the seemingly silly game that my cousin had introduced me to meant to me. Document D also states that Cabeza and his fellow survivors had returned everything that the Natives had given to them. This evidence helps explain his survival because, he created a trust and balance between the two, that could have very well saved their lives. Cabeza would not have had this if he had not been able to communicate with the Natives. A third reason Cabeza was able to survive was he was useful to the Natives. Good evidence of this is when Cabeza proved how useful he was when he saved one of the Natives. Document C shows a report of Cabeza using his knife to cut open the man's chest and removing an arrow. Cabeza stitched the man up and he was healed. This act made Cabeza of use to the Natives, because they realized that keeping him alive and able to heal others was important to them. This evidence also explains how Cabeza stayed alive, because without Cabeza showing himself to be of use to the Natives, they may have seen him as a threat and killed him right then and there. The coastal population density was moderately high, and people spent much of the annual cycle living in large shoreline fishing camps that housed several hundred people during peak fishing seasons. In fact, prior to around 8,000 B.C., the area of the modern shoreline was high and dry, with the Gulf coast far to the east of its present position. This is because, in earlier millennia, global sea level was as much as 300 feet lower, with much of the world's water supply inaccessible in vast continental ice sheets and montane glaciers that were far more extensive than those of modern times. The Pleistocene era, or Ice Age, had markedly lower global temperatures than those of historical times. The Westfield, in attempting to leave the harbor, ran aground and, in order to prevent her from falling into the hands of the Confederates a train was laid to blow up the vessel and the crew abandoned her. There was some delay in the explosion and fifteen Federals were sent back on board to investigate and remedy the defect. It was the last to secede before the firing Battle of Fort Sumter signaled the beginning of the Civil War and made citizens of the upper South to choose between fighting against or with their Southern peers. • 33. Galveston Island Case Study Introduction Galveston Island is rich in history and has population history that archeologist have dated back to Native Americans. It was settled by Europeans and established as a port for the Republic of Mexico. It was rich in immigration and dominated trade. It has a history of turmoil caused by war and natural disasters. Galveston Island formed as a typical barrier island. Galveston's formation took place 5000 years ago, as wind and wave energy along with rising sea water levels moved sand around to form the island. The wave and wind energy is indicative of storm surge often caused by hurricane interaction. The building up of Galveston Island continued until 3000 years ago. The coastal shoreline continues to change and those changes appear to be happening more rapidly than once believed. It will be making landfall within hours, and wind gusts are already packing up to 110 mph," announced the meteorologist on ABC news. I could not believe that a storm ould be approaching. It was a beautiful, hot day on Galveston Island. However, the water rose suddenly and rushed over the curbs, flooding the streets. The storm and its potential for devastation was becoming a reality. Dad, on his way to work, noticed the water rising and the waves splashing over the seawall. He turned the car around and rushed home. Dad dashed into the house yelling, "If we don't leave immediately, we won't be able to get out! Pack your bags!" We didn't know what to take with us. Mom and I hurried from room to room, anxiously looking at portraits, furniture, and chandeliers. We knew that we couldn't take them and feared that we would never see our home or belongings again. We grabbed necessities such as medications, clothes, electronic devices, and family photos. Worried and stressed, we drove to Moody Gardens Hotel to ride out the storm. Our tension increased as we noticed that the water was rising rapidly. The sun was still brightly shining. Once we arrived at the hotel, we parked the car on the highest covered parking level. • 35. The Polio Years : A Long Period Of Captivity Essay Heather Green Wooten's The Polio Years in Texas: Battling a Terrifying Unknown chronicles the history of polio in Texas in a very extensive timeline. The book goes all the way back to the beginning of the polio epidemic and essentially progresses to the present. The time in this book certainly exceeds that of, The Captured and Isaac's Storm. The Captured chronicled a long period of captivity, but did not appear to exceed a decade. Isaac's Storm traced the initial development of Weather Bureau and covered a great period, but did not exceed that of The Polio Years. Several themes begin to emerge further into the book. Obvious themes included, the support for March of Dimes, impact on families affected by polio, the growth and development of rehabilitation facilities, and more importantly the response to the disease by Texans. Oddly, Wooten discusses the fact that other diseases such as, measles, diphtheria, and tuberculosis took more lives than Polio. However, people feared Polio more than the rest. Wooten attributes polio's terrifying affect to the uncertainty. Several uncertainties such as, how to prevent it, why did some become crippled, why did some die, and why did it only essentially affected children made polio very terrifying in the 20th century. Texas appeared to have been hit the hardest in comparison to other states. Wooten's research examined the time during and then after World War II. During this period,Texas saw an immense amount of polio contractions. Per ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Battle Of San Jacinto Case Study Strategic Setting Depending on the perspective, the strategic factors of the Battle of San Jacinto were either to re–align Texas with the Mexican government, as it had pulled away in rebellion due to Anglo interference from the U.S. (Pedro, 1921). A second perspective of the strategic factor of the Battle of San Jacinto had to do with Texans, in particular Anglo Texans from the Southern U.S., wanting to extend the influence of slavery over the region, intentionally flaunting and ignoring Mexico's anti–slavery polices (Tindall and Shi, 2013). A third perspective, offered by Anderson and Wooster (2016) is that strategically the Battle of San Jacinto was the result of tyrannical oversight and behaviors by Santa Anna and the Mexican government over Texas. Introduction In 2010, the United States became the world's largest natural gas producer, claiming the top spot that was formerly owned by Russia. The U.S. is now ranked as one of the world's largest producer of oil and natural gas liquids, creating about 50 percent of its own oil in 2014. The Lone Star State produces about 35 percent of the country's oil and 23 percent of the country's natural gas. Texas has always been a major center for oil and natural gas companies starting from the discovery of oil in the early 1900's. Consequently, fossil fuels play a significant role in the economic, political, and social construct of Texas. However, scientific studies have provided information highlighting the numerous environmental problems that can come from the production and use of fossil fuels. Should Texas try to eliminate the use of fossil fuels and preserve the environment or do the economic benefits that come from oil and natural gas production outway the use of cleaner energy sources? How would Texas respond to this situation socially and economically? How do fossil fuels affect the environment and is it even possible for Texas to only userenewable energy ? These attitudes in combination with a series of political problems within the Weather Bureau led to the ignoring of warnings from Cuban meteorologists regarding the storm. In an effort not to cause panic, no warning was given to Galveston residents of the storm until it was too late. The lack of warning combined with Galveston's misfortune of being very near the eye of the hurricane and being hit by the storm at a 90В° angel, left the city vulnerable to the storm's full force.
