Peoples Temple Essay
Peoples Temple
On November 18, 1978 more than nine hundred people died in one of the largest mass
murder/suicides in history. The man that implemented and carried out that atrocity was James
Warren Jones, otherwise known as Jim Jones, a self proclaimed Second Coming (God). His
exposure to an intensely emotional Pentecostal church service influenced and shaped his future
beliefs and actions. In 1960, despite his lack of theological training, Jim Jones became an ordained
minister. He made racial equality one of goals. Jim Jones also used fear arousal to recruit his
followers by Genocide and thermonuclear war. His ability to persuade was more successful with
him becoming an ordained minister. He used his charisma to persuade ... Show more content on

The people yielded to real or imagined social pressure. There were loyalty tests to prove their
loyalty to Jim Jones. One of these tests was to do a practice suicide of drinking the Kool–Aid. They
were told the drink was poisoned, but it really wasn't. The people thought it was though and drank it
anyways. Some of the people were just compliant. They yielded to social pressure in their public
behavior, even though their private beliefs had not changed. I believe these people to be the ones
who ended up wanting to leave the cult. Some of these people were killed for trying to leave. There
were still others who conformed to the social norms for fear of negative social consequences which
they called catharsis. Their example of catharsis was, for example, if a teenager was accused of
being rude to a senior citizen , the congregation would hear the evidence and vote on the teenagers
innocence or guilt. The punishment could be a severe spanking administered by Jones. Adults who
transgressed were punished by being placed in a ring and forced to box with bigger, stronger Temple
members. Transgressions subject to catharsis ranged from selfishness, sexism, discourtesy to drug
and alcohol abuse, and petty crimes for which members could be arrested and convicted by public
authorities. So, as far as this relating to the chapter, it did in many ways. I have always wondered
what the Jim Jones story was all about. I was six years old

Cultural influence of the temple of Hera
It is very clear that ancient buildings can be a part of the evidence to show what happed in the
history. As a part of ancient culture, architectural languages have the significant vale in both culture
and construction. The temple of Hera, which becomes the sign of Greek classic architecture even the
whole Europe, plays an important role in the Greece history and culture . This essay will start an
analysis from the structure and component of the temple of hera to present that how can cultural
factors affect the form and functions of a building. The temple of hera is located in the site of
Olympia, in a valley in the Peloponnesus. As a Doric construction with a size of 50.01 by 18.76 m
with three platforms, some of the walls in the temple of hera was designed to paint for recording
stories happened in earlier times while some of them was used to depict mythological events. Thus it
can be easy to found that the cultural developed prosperous and stones might start to used as the
main material of Greek buildings since that period. The temple has two statues: Hera and Jose . In
addition, the temple was also used to save

Mamallapuram : The Five Rathas And The Shore Temple
Mamallapuram, also called Mahabalipuram, (Mamalla meaning "great warrior") is a famous town in
India that's well–known for its monuments and temple created by the Pallava dynasty during the 7th
and 8th century. The five Rathas and the Shore Temple I will be writing about in this essay covers
the history and materials that were used to build them. They are also labeled as rock–cut temples
that were hallowed out of mountains carved out of hard stone and are more connected to sculptures
rather than conventional buildings constructed with blocks of polished stone. They are carved in the
"quasi–monolithic temple form." The Pancha Rathas are aligned in the direction of north to south
and share a standard plinth. The five Rathas except the Arjuna Ratha are a collection of five small
stone temples accompanied by a life–size statue of a bull, an elephant, and a lion. Four of the Rathas
are carved out of a large, single piece of rock. Since each Ratha wasn't finished, they were not able
to be used as a worship space. All of the Ratha (monolithic) temples are three stories high with a
base floor plan shaped like a square. The shallow recesses of the interior walls of the Rathas have
carved images of gods and demi–gods. The first temple I will be talking about is the Draupadi
Ratha.
The dwelling of the goddess at Mamallapuram dedicated to Shiva's consort, Durga. The smallest of
the Mamallapuram Rathas, known as the Draupadi Ratha, is dedicated to the goddess Durga. The

The Temple Of Artemis At Ephesus
THE TEMPLE OF ARTEMIS AT EPHESUS

The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus is a complex building with a complex history. Located in East
Greece, the building underwent many changes, as did the surrounding Greek society. This paper will
discuss the history, architecture, historical context, and sculptures of the temple. An analysis of it's
evolution will also be provided.
The temple was built in mid sixth century BCE. The exact date of construction is unknown.
However, a date of around 525 BCE has been suggested based on the column reliefs found. They are
comparable to the frieze of the Siphnian Treasury building. Sculptures have also been found that
were of the style ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The new temple had the same general layout, but the columns were now higher and thicker, with
enlarged bases. It became known as one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world. The temple
experienced further devastation in 263 AD when a group of Ostrogoths attacked it, destroying it
almost completely. This time, the temple was not rebuilt. Later, some of the columns were reused in
the building of a palace at Constantinople and other buildings of later centuries. Very little remains
on the temple site today (fig. 2). It has been suggested by John Wood that a church may have been
built after the temple was destroyed, based on dotted lines found in the natural soil, indicating
support walls of a church. No other evidence exists to support this claim. What we do have,
however, is many archaic fragments of sculpture and architecture obtained from the site through
careful excavation. Every significant fragment that was found on the site of the temple has been
transported to the British Museum. A single column still remains on the site of the temple in
Ephesus, which was built in modern times for remembrance. Because of the discoveries of John
Wood, information about the architecture of the Temple of Artemis has become available. It was
constructed primarily of marble. The design was likely not of the typical rectangular proportions of
the time in Greece, but a combination of Near–Eastern design and Classic Greek. Both the earlier
and later temples had

Mỹ Sơn is a temple complex located in central Vietnam consisting of over 70 Hindu temples
constructed between the 4th to 14th century by the kings of Champa. The temples were built to
worship the god Shiva that symbolizes the father/male realm. According to the Brhat Samhita
scriptures of Hinduism, "The gods always play where groves are near, rivers, mountains and springs
and in towns with pleasure gardens." Hence, Mỹ Sơn was erected within several closed valleys that
provide the watershed of the sacred Thu Bồn River. Only at Mỹ Sơn, the topography of the site's
narrow valley was used to symbolize a mandala. The spring of flowing sacred water symbolized the
Goddess Ganga, wife of God Shiva, where rituals and sacrifices were performed. The river not only

Influenced by Indian artistic tradition, the religious temple complex consists of a Kalan
encompassed by several smaller shrines, auxiliary buildings and low walls. A gate tower opposite
the Kalan is built to orientate in the east–west direction. In front of the gate tower stands a Mandapa,
a preparatory hall where sacred songs and dances were performed as prayers and offerings before
proceeding into the Kalan for the actual ritual. In addition, a fire tower, where objects of worship
were stored, is positioned right in front of the Kalan. This brick structure with a boat shaped roof,
along with one or two rooms and a main door is built to face north, the direction of the god of
fortune, Kuvera. It symbolizes treasury and prosperity of the realm, where the sacred flame Agni
was kept while performing rituals. The Kalan, built to represent the sacred mountain of Meru and to
symbolize the center of the universe, is the most important edifice where it is believed to house the
god's very place of residence. Smaller shrines and low walls signify the

Why Was The Second Temple Destroyed?
Director of Congregational Learning It has now been a full year since I began my position at
Congregation Sinai. Thank you all again for an amazing first year. When I was interviewing I gave
an adult education lesson on the destruction of the 2nd Temple. We have just completed the fast day
Tisha B'Av. Tisha B'Av (9th of Av) is the date given by our sages for the destruction of both
Temples, so again it feels like I have come full circle. Talmud (Yoma 9b), "Why was the Second
Temple destroyed? Because of sinat chinam, senseless hatred of one Jew for another." The rabbis are
speaking spiritually; however, historians show us that this is physically true. The Romans get the

what can be said about manipulation.
The People's Temple group dynamic was Groupthink since Jim Jones was the leader and he had the
stronger voice everyone would come to him for anything. Also the way the followers thinking the
process was everyone is the same as the all wanted equity rights so if one killed somebody everyone
else did and the who group will be punished as a whole. This only worked when the member went

Influence of Greek and Roman Temples Essay
Greek and Roman temples are the most influential temples of all times. It is argued that the Greek
influenced the Romans and this may be the reason why their temples are so alike. The Parthenon
and the Pantheon are the most popular temples of both eras. However, the Pantheon does not look
like other roman temples would to Greek temples – and this is because it has interior space and thus
has a completely different composition. Despite their quite similar looks, Roman and Greek temples
have unique differences in material, method, purpose, and others.
The Parthenon, with no doubt, is one of the best well–known Greek temples of all times. It is also
the dominant temple on the Akropolis. Its construction began in 447 BC and ended in 438 ... Show

Agrippa, Augustus' right–hand man, constructed this building as a temple to all the gods; however, a
fire destroyed this temple in 80 CE and so Domitian built the reconstruction. The Pantheon we are
familiar with has a significantly different design than the original one, and this is why this specific
temple is so dislike to the rest of the Roman temples. Before it was burnt, the Pantheon stood in a
podium at the end of a large rectangular court. The surroundings of this temple have changed in
order to provide a unique experience to its visitors. For example, the temple has en enormous dome
with a 27–foot oculus that opens to the sky. This oculus lets a shaft of light come through creating
an emphasis wherever the reflection is. Visitors were driven nowhere but to the light at the center of
the dome. This building was built for greeting foreign embassies, adjudicating disputes and hold
court (Janson). Moreover, the Pantheon is extraordinary because of the potential and strength of
concrete. Some other materials used in the process of building the temple include travertine, tufa,
brick, and pumice. These materials varied in order to reduce its weight. The colored marble on the
wall symbolized imperial authority. The sphere is though to symbolize eternity and perfection and
the bronze panels symbolized a starry night sky.
Greek and Roman temples are very similar in structure, however they have their differences as well.

The Etruscan Temples And The Parthenon
During the fifth century and Eighth century BCE, The Etruscan Temples and The Parthenon were
built and valued by their cultures for many spiritual and cultural reasons. Similar to the Parthenon,
The Etruscan Temples are built with influences from Greece. However, Both have different
appearances based off of there medium, purpose, and architecture. The Etruscan Temple and the
Parthenon both have strong stances within there cultures and provide peace and empowerment for
the population of the time. Both structures are two similar ancient buildings, though there
differences in culture and architecture set them apart. The Etruscan culture was located in central
Italy to the north of Rome. The Etruscan Temples were built by the Etruscans during the Archaic
period (600–480 BCE). By the time archaeologists discovered the Etruscan Temples, they were very
worn down and most were no longer standing, though, they were measured to about 5x6 meters long
with a height of 2 meters with the altar of ten steps in the front of the temple."The Etruscans made
small temples, like little houses with pointed roofs, entirely of wood, but then outside, they had
freizes and cornices and crests of terra cotta so the upper part of the temple would seem as almost
made of earthenware..." (Lawrence 52) They were able to use the mud as a kind of concrete to keep
the wood and brick in place. The Temples typically had three cellas where as the Parthenon only had
one. As for the Parthenon, it was located on

Descriptive Essay On Mexican Mayan Temple
5 Must–see Mexican Mayan Temples
Without a doubt, one of the most visually stunning and physically overwhelming things I've come
across on my travels are the ancient temples of Central America. In this article, I'm going to delve
into some of the ones I was lucky enough to experience. Now, it's important to point out early on,
that this is by no means a list of the 'best' temples and covers only a very, very small portion of a
vast expansive network of temples scattered across the continent. However, this is a list of my
personal favourites and of temples, I would highly recommend anyone in the area (or thinking of
going to the area) visits.

consists of multiple elements. Including an impressive array of temples. Predictably, when you step
foot on the Avenue of the Dead and you gaze down the wide expansive pathways at the Pyramids of

Research Topic: How does technology inform the way the Temple of Hera looks?
Intro & Thesis Statement: Temple of Hera at Olympia is built for serving the wife of Zeus and the
Greek goddess of marriage, Hera. The size of Temple of Hera is not huge, the dimensions of the
temple were 18.75 m by 50 m. It is the oldest building in the site of Olympia, it was built about 600
BC, it is one of the oldest temples in Greece. The Temple was destroyed by an earthquake in 4th
century CE. The first Olympic game started here at 776 BC and maintained the tradition ever since.
In modern days, people use Temple of Hera as the sacred place for lighting up the torch of the
Olympic flame. Temple of Hera at Olympia uses its environment, different styles of Doric columns,
hexastyle plan and different local materials that were used on the temple shapes the way it looks.

The Temple Of Artemis At Ephesus
The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus: World Wonder The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, also known
as the Artemision, was once a remarkable sight that was considered to be one of the Seven Wonders
of the Ancient World. The temple itself was a rather mysterious as not much is known about the
rituals that may have taken place there. It is known that the Ephesian held Artemis is the highest
honor. It was believed by some that Artemis herself was born at the location of the temple (Iosa, pg.
3). The temple had many motifs dedicated to this believe, it can be considered "the Nativity Temple
of Artemis" ("The Earlier Temple of Artemis at Ephesus", pg. 16). The people of Ephesus also

8). Wood applied for a grant from the British Museum to excavate the site after discovering it while
helping to build a railroad between Izmir and Denilzi (Jenkins, pg. 51). While excavating the great
theatre in May of 1966, Wood found an inscription describing silver figures that were dedicated to
the goddess Artemis. The inscription also mentioned a procession that would carry these objects to
the temple on the goddess's birthday. Using this Wood realized that if he found the gates, the
Magnesian Gate and the Coressian Gate, described in the passage he could find the location of the
Temple of Artemis. He found the Magnesian Gate by the end of 1967 followed later by the
Coressian (Jenkins, pg. 52). The temple itself was finally found by the end of 1869. Wood later
published an account of the excavation, including what he thought what the temple may have looked
like. In 1904, the site was revisited D. G. Hogarth and A. E. Henderson. They researched the
temple's earlier history and determined that the site had three incarnations (Jenkins, pg. 53). The
Artemision was built in the early Ionic style of Greek architecture, as can be seen from the columns.
The columns were unusual as they had capitals that had large rosettes on them instead of the normal
volutes. The modern restorations of the capitals give them petals, but it is debated on the accuracy of

Movie Analysis : Temple Grandin
Temple Grandin is a film that relies heavily on mise en scene to show audiences the amazing way
into which those with autism can see the world and perceive and then solve problems they are faced
with on a daily basis. The filmmakers cleverly use mise en scene to help communicate the central
theme of the film of being different, not less. It gives viewers a way to relate to Temple, to see and
understand what her world is like. They are able to spend the length of the film in her shoes and
learn what it's like to think outside the box. To allow the audience a peek into the mind of Temple,
the filmmakers had to find a way to show how she connects things in the real world to things she has
stored in her memory that allows her to make sense of the situation. One example of this is when
Temple first arrives Arizona, as she is exiting the airplane, the audience is introduced to the very
literal interpretation of the world that she has. In the scorching heat as she walks down the stairs off
the plane she not only feels the heat, she can see it. She looks around and everywhere she looks she
sees fire. Her mind interprets the heat she is feeling and automatically thinks of everything related to
heat thus showing fire. Mise en scene allows the filmmakers to properly set each scene to really
show the inner workings of Temple's mind. One great example of this is when she fixes the gate on
her aunt's farm. To any "normal" person it's just a gate that you have to get out of your car

Throughout Temple's 'emergence from autism', Temple's mother focused on Temple's strengths and
affirmed Temple's differences and way of looking at the world. In letters to Temple, Mrs. Grandin

Society has created an environment where those with different abilities struggle to be accepted.
Doctor Temple Grandin is a remarkable woman who has defied what most perceive when they see

Jonestown And The Peoples Temple
A Look at Jonestown and the Peoples Temple
Many people have heard the phrase "drinking the Kool–aid" but few actually know where the term
comes from. The story of Jonestown and the Peoples Temple is a complex one with many different
causes and can sometimes be a tough topic to learn about. Nonetheless, there is much to be learned
from it, as it shows the dangers of putting too much blind loyalty into a person or cause.
The story of Jonestown began in 1955 when a man named Jim Jones Started a Religion called
Wings of Deliverance. The group was very active with civil rights and equality, which is something
that some groups at the time looked down on and also part of the reason why Jones started his own

There were two rows of columns stretched across the front of the temple, standing about 21 feet
apart and extending from the front to the back of the temple at 17 feet apart. The door in the
pediment –– along with two windows –– was intended for Artemis' own use (8). Inside the temple
was the statue of Artemis herself, which was built from gold, silver, ebony and other stones. The
temple brought in merchants, kings, and sightseers, many of donated jewellery and other treasures to
Artemis and her temple. Its splendor also attracted many worshipers and pilgrims, strengthening the
cult of Artemis (9). Since she was an influential figure, her fame went higher as soon as her temple
was built.
The Temple of Artemis was a very famous and attracted visitor from far and near. Its purpose was
both a religious institution and market place. The market place itself had small models of the temple

Reasons For Temple Desecration In Medieval India
Temple desecration is the act raiding and dismantling temples and places of religious worship.
Throughout medieval Indian history leaders, conquers, and other political bodies have destroyed and
plundered temples. The reasons for temple desecration are varied however, the underlying motives
are primarily for political gain. Hindu temples in Indian surved not just as places of worship but a
places that represented and framed the social structures of their given communities. Temples were
commissioned and paid for by local government officials to even the areas rulers. For conquering
powers destroying temples became both statement of power and a way to suppress communities.
These temples were often great sources of wealth and the economic gain lored many leaders. The
stolen riches could fund wars and their own luxuries, or even their own religious structures. ... Show

religion with another that is often times not the complete end. Especially, the replacing of Hindu

Temples were both made by political forces and local communities as much as they shaped them.
"The main function of the temple as an institution is thus considered to be integration: economically
through the redistribution of accumulated resources, socially through the incorporation of diverse
social groups into one community of worship, and politically through the conferment of ritual
prestige to sovereigns and local elites."(temple pantronage 331). Temple desecration is a pivotal act

Solar Temple Cults
Many cults in the world exist some are good and others are unpleasant. Some of the cults join
together to do good things such as meeting people and bonding with those of the same religions and
expressions as yourself. There are also; bad cults that have killed many people and even some cults
have killed even their own members although, there is not a lot of cults that have committed suicide
to end their own cult like the Order of the Solar Temple had done. The Order of the Solar Temple
was a great example of mob mentality. They all believed in the same things, acted upon and did
things together that they would probably not have done if they were acting alone. The Solar Temple
cult was created in 1984 by a guy named Luc Journet. The cult was created when another cult called
the "Knights Temple" split which created the Solar Temple. The cult was mostly known for the mass
suicide as well as the murder of 74 of its members which occurred between the years of 1994–1997.
"The Solar Temple cult believed that the earth would face a horrible, catastrophic event in the
1990's" ("Order Of The Solar Temple" 1). They believed that it was good to get on a higher spiritual
level before this horrible event happens and they decease. The Solar Temple cult was very secretive,
they kept their actions and beliefs as much of a secret as they could. To become a member of the

Temple Grandin Reflection
Temple Grandin was diagnosed with autism when she was four years old. The doctors told her
mother that Temple should be put in an institution because she would likely never learn to talk.
Fortunately for her, Mrs. Grandin refused to institutionalize her daughter and decided to do
everything within her power to teach Temple how to live a somewhat normal life. I would like to
think I would do the same thing if I were put in that situation, but it must have been extremely
difficult and at times, somewhat frustrating, for Mrs. Grandin. Growing up, Temple did not have an

Introduction
Oppressed, disseminated, exiled, time and again mistreated, the Jews not only endured but
contributed indispensably to the Western civilization, playing a critical role in almost every vital
episode of world history. This survey of the second temple period will capture the survival of Jews
and the advancement of Judaism under foreign rulers that took place in the span of six hundred
years. These turn of events begin from late sixth century Before Christ (BC), and culminate in 70
Anno Domini (AD) with the destruction of the second temple in Jerusalem by the Roman Empire.
At the outset of this paper, Israel's return from exile under the Persian Empire control, then their
odyssey under the Hellenistic kingdoms, and finally their journey under the Roman Empire
governing is looked at, which will provide a chronological look of the events during this period.
Furthermore, in the latter part of this paper Ezra the profit and events that he was involved in that
affected the first–century world of Jews and their expectations of the Messiah are highlighted. From

Jonestown: The Life And Death Of Peoples Temple
Jonestown: The Life and Death of Peoples Temple
"If we can't live in peace, we'll die in peace. Die with respect, die with a degree of dignity," –Jim
Jones [6]. These were the very last words 909 people heard on November 18th, 1978 as they slowly
came to their last day of life. Jim Jones, the leader of Peoples Temple, left his followers with many
unfilled promises after many years of nothing but complete loyalty and dedication to this man that
they idealized and respected every word he preached to them. The Peoples Temple offered the idea
of a perfect utopia, where no one was judged, everyone was as one, but that was not the case at all.
In fact it was quite the opposite and filled with manipulation, false hope, and murder – not suicide.

The Peoples Temple
The Peoples Temple began as a church that supported social equality and justice, but slowly
changed into a prophetic movement; a network of individuals, tightly organized in a communal
group that attaches its identity to charismatic leadership and the teachings of that leader. The
movement's leader Jim Jones claimed to be the "God–sent prophet" . In order to expand, he later
moved his congregation to California and eventually Guyana where he created the closed
community of Jonestown. However, in 1978, members of Jonestown murdered Congressman Leo
Ryan, and all residents of Jonestown committed suicide. The apocalyptic beliefs of the Peoples
Temple shaped its identity and led to the murder of Congressman Ryan, this belief also marked its
demise. By using apocalyptic literature, the book of Revelation, as reference, the actions ... Show

The belief of a battle between good and evil has always existed in the practices of the Peoples
Temple. The Peoples Temple is an Alternative Religious Movement, which is an alternative

Rebecca Moore described it saying:

The first thing that catches the attention, is the Chinese architecture of the temple and all of the

The temple contains the images of many bodhisattvas,Buddha's, and disciples. The images of the
Buddha's and bodhisattvas are the focus of the rooms and outside. For example, in the main shrine
and Bodhisattva hall, the focus are the images. Another example is the garden of the eighteen arhats
in which the Buddha is surrounded by his first disciples. The other garden that is in the temple is the
Vessel of Compassion for Universal Liberation. The main image in this garden is that of
Avalofitesvara Bodhisattva. The other images depicted are of heaven kings. The bodhisattva is
important because the vows of this Bodhisattva are of a compassionate mind and the power of
wisdom. This bodhisattva answers the prayers of sentient beings no matter where they are and
manifests in different forms. These eighteen arhats extinguished all defilements and afflictions. They
had reached nirvana and their righteousness is exemplary to all Buddhists. Comparatively, symbols
play an important role in buddhism and we can see this through the offers made to the Buddha's and
bodhisattvas. For example, incense symbolizes inner peace, a lamp offering symbolizes the
brightening of our vision and the enhancement of our wisdom. In addition, in the images, mudras or
certain objects are a symbol of important rules to follow. Such as in image of the Bodhisattva
Samantabhadra, the elephant symbolizes practice. The sounds that are used are that of instruments
during the service in the main shrine and the sound of bells which usually mark the initiation of a
service or other announcements. Furthermore, the smells that are used throughout the temple are
incense. Incense is used as an offering and it is meant to help the Buddhist concentrate and focus on
meditating. Lastly, taste is used in the ritual of eating vegetarian meals

Analysis Of The Temple Of Hera
The Early Classical Greek Temple of Hera II from Paestum, Italy, built circa 460 BCE, has
influenced many works, such as the Carolingian Palatine Chapel built by Odo of Metz in Aachen,
Germany from 792–805 BCE under command of the patron, Charlemagne. The Second Temple of
Hera is one of the most studied Greek temples since it is in such good condition and has so much to
offer historians. The Palatine Chapel, highly inspired by ancient Greek architectural design, was
closely supervised by Charlemagne as his personal project, and built by Odo of Metz. The Temple of
Hera II and the Palatine Chapel are similar due to the influence ancient Greek works had on later
European art, such as the Carolingian period. Art from these periods influenced the important
aspects of art seen today. Religion was a huge motivator for both of these periods, and held deep
emotional connections for many artists. I find this to be somewhat relatable, since I also need
emotional attachment as a motivator to complete my artwork sometimes. These designs resemble
those of today in the amount of effort and forethought put into planning and building them, however,
the complexity of these older religious structures lies in the artistic and visual nature of the building,
rather than the efficiency–related accomodations one would observe today. This demonstrates the
metamorphosis of human priorities over the centuries. Both of the images to be discussed (Temple
of Hera II and Palatine Chapel) speak to the

Ezekiel's Vision And Prophetic Declaration Of A New Temple
Introduction Ezekiel's vision and prophetic declaration of a new temple is among the most debatable
text within the Old Testament. In the twenty–fifth year of Ezekiel's exile, God instructed him to look
and listen carefully by paying close attention to everything that he was shown. Not only was he
supposed to see, hear and grasp, he also had to provide this information to Israel (Ez 40:4) . The
vision was to provide hope, a spiritual renewal and a future depiction of Israel's restoration.
Although the prophet Ezekiel, in chapters 40–48, delineated an imaginative depiction of a future

his people to drink the poison, which seemed to be a way out of the inevitable government

Peoples Temple Essay

  • 1. Peoples Temple Essay Peoples Temple On November 18, 1978 more than nine hundred people died in one of the largest mass murder/suicides in history. The man that implemented and carried out that atrocity was James Warren Jones, otherwise known as Jim Jones, a self proclaimed Second Coming (God). His exposure to an intensely emotional Pentecostal church service influenced and shaped his future beliefs and actions. In 1960, despite his lack of theological training, Jim Jones became an ordained minister. He made racial equality one of goals. Jim Jones also used fear arousal to recruit his followers by Genocide and thermonuclear war. His ability to persuade was more successful with him becoming an ordained minister. He used his charisma to persuade ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The people yielded to real or imagined social pressure. There were loyalty tests to prove their loyalty to Jim Jones. One of these tests was to do a practice suicide of drinking the Kool–Aid. They were told the drink was poisoned, but it really wasn't. The people thought it was though and drank it anyways. Some of the people were just compliant. They yielded to social pressure in their public behavior, even though their private beliefs had not changed. I believe these people to be the ones who ended up wanting to leave the cult. Some of these people were killed for trying to leave. There were still others who conformed to the social norms for fear of negative social consequences which they called catharsis. Their example of catharsis was, for example, if a teenager was accused of being rude to a senior citizen , the congregation would hear the evidence and vote on the teenagers innocence or guilt. The punishment could be a severe spanking administered by Jones. Adults who transgressed were punished by being placed in a ring and forced to box with bigger, stronger Temple members. Transgressions subject to catharsis ranged from selfishness, sexism, discourtesy to drug and alcohol abuse, and petty crimes for which members could be arrested and convicted by public authorities. So, as far as this relating to the chapter, it did in many ways. I have always wondered what the Jim Jones story was all about. I was six years old ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Mamallapuram : The Five Rathas And The Shore Temple Mamallapuram, also called Mahabalipuram, (Mamalla meaning "great warrior") is a famous town in India that's well–known for its monuments and temple created by the Pallava dynasty during the 7th and 8th century. The five Rathas and the Shore Temple I will be writing about in this essay covers the history and materials that were used to build them. They are also labeled as rock–cut temples that were hallowed out of mountains carved out of hard stone and are more connected to sculptures rather than conventional buildings constructed with blocks of polished stone. They are carved in the "quasi–monolithic temple form." The Pancha Rathas are aligned in the direction of north to south and share a standard plinth. The five Rathas except the Arjuna Ratha are a collection of five small stone temples accompanied by a life–size statue of a bull, an elephant, and a lion. Four of the Rathas are carved out of a large, single piece of rock. Since each Ratha wasn't finished, they were not able to be used as a worship space. All of the Ratha (monolithic) temples are three stories high with a base floor plan shaped like a square. The shallow recesses of the interior walls of the Rathas have carved images of gods and demi–gods. The first temple I will be talking about is the Draupadi Ratha. The dwelling of the goddess at Mamallapuram dedicated to Shiva's consort, Durga. The smallest of the Mamallapuram Rathas, known as the Draupadi Ratha, is dedicated to the goddess Durga. • 7. The Temple Of Artemis At Ephesus THE TEMPLE OF ARTEMIS AT EPHESUS Molli Layton Art History 201 Dr. James Swenson June 2, 2017 The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus is a complex building with a complex history. Located in East Greece, the building underwent many changes, as did the surrounding Greek society. This paper will discuss the history, architecture, historical context, and sculptures of the temple. An analysis of it's evolution will also be provided. The temple was built in mid sixth century BCE. The exact date of construction is unknown. However, a date of around 525 BCE has been suggested based on the column reliefs found. They are comparable to the frieze of the Siphnian Treasury building. Sculptures have also been found that were of the style ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The new temple had the same general layout, but the columns were now higher and thicker, with enlarged bases. It became known as one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world. The temple experienced further devastation in 263 AD when a group of Ostrogoths attacked it, destroying it almost completely. This time, the temple was not rebuilt. Later, some of the columns were reused in the building of a palace at Constantinople and other buildings of later centuries. Very little remains on the temple site today (fig. 2). It has been suggested by John Wood that a church may have been built after the temple was destroyed, based on dotted lines found in the natural soil, indicating support walls of a church. No other evidence exists to support this claim. What we do have, however, is many archaic fragments of sculpture and architecture obtained from the site through careful excavation. Every significant fragment that was found on the site of the temple has been transported to the British Museum. A single column still remains on the site of the temple in Ephesus, which was built in modern times for remembrance. Because of the discoveries of John Wood, information about the architecture of the Temple of Artemis has become available. It was constructed primarily of marble. The design was likely not of the typical rectangular proportions of the time in Greece, but a combination of Near–Eastern design and Classic Greek. Both the earlier and later temples had ... • 9. Mexican American Temple Case Study Mỹ Sơn is a temple complex located in central Vietnam consisting of over 70 Hindu temples constructed between the 4th to 14th century by the kings of Champa. The temples were built to worship the god Shiva that symbolizes the father/male realm. According to the Brhat Samhita scriptures of Hinduism, "The gods always play where groves are near, rivers, mountains and springs and in towns with pleasure gardens." Hence, Mỹ Sơn was erected within several closed valleys that provide the watershed of the sacred Thu Bồn River. Only at Mỹ Sơn, the topography of the site's narrow valley was used to symbolize a mandala. The spring of flowing sacred water symbolized the Goddess Ganga, wife of God Shiva, where rituals and sacrifices were performed. The river not only serves its religious ... Influenced by Indian artistic tradition, the religious temple complex consists of a Kalan encompassed by several smaller shrines, auxiliary buildings and low walls. A gate tower opposite the Kalan is built to orientate in the east–west direction. In front of the gate tower stands a Mandapa, a preparatory hall where sacred songs and dances were performed as prayers and offerings before proceeding into the Kalan for the actual ritual. In addition, a fire tower, where objects of worship were stored, is positioned right in front of the Kalan. This brick structure with a boat shaped roof, along with one or two rooms and a main door is built to face north, the direction of the god of fortune, Kuvera. It symbolizes treasury and prosperity of the realm, where the sacred flame Agni was kept while performing rituals. Thank you all again for an amazing first year. When I was interviewing I gave an adult education lesson on the destruction of the 2nd Temple. We have just completed the fast day Tisha B'Av. Tisha B'Av (9th of Av) is the date given by our sages for the destruction of both Temples, so again it feels like I have come full circle. Talmud (Yoma 9b), "Why was the Second Temple destroyed? Because of sinat chinam, senseless hatred of one Jew for another." The rabbis are speaking spiritually; however, historians show us that this is physically true. The case studied is the incident of the Jonestown mass suicide and the thesis is a study on manipulation and what can be said about manipulation. The People's Temple group dynamic was Groupthink since Jim Jones was the leader and he had the stronger voice everyone would come to him for anything. Also the way the followers thinking the process was everyone is the same as the all wanted equity rights so if one killed somebody everyone else did and the who group will be punished as a whole. • 15. Influence of Greek and Roman Temples Essay Greek and Roman temples are the most influential temples of all times. It is argued that the Greek influenced the Romans and this may be the reason why their temples are so alike. The Parthenon and the Pantheon are the most popular temples of both eras. However, the Pantheon does not look like other roman temples would to Greek temples – and this is because it has interior space and thus has a completely different composition. Despite their quite similar looks, Roman and Greek temples have unique differences in material, method, purpose, and others. The Parthenon, with no doubt, is one of the best well–known Greek temples of all times. It is also the dominant temple on the Akropolis. Its construction began in 447 BC and ended in 438 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Agrippa, Augustus' right–hand man, constructed this building as a temple to all the gods; however, a fire destroyed this temple in 80 CE and so Domitian built the reconstruction. The Pantheon we are familiar with has a significantly different design than the original one, and this is why this specific temple is so dislike to the rest of the Roman temples. Before it was burnt, the Pantheon stood in a podium at the end of a large rectangular court. The surroundings of this temple have changed in order to provide a unique experience to its visitors. For example, the temple has en enormous dome with a 27–foot oculus that opens to the sky. This oculus lets a shaft of light come through creating an emphasis wherever the reflection is. Visitors were driven nowhere but to the light at the center of the dome. This building was built for greeting foreign embassies, adjudicating disputes and hold court (Janson). Moreover, the Pantheon is extraordinary because of the potential and strength of concrete. Some other materials used in the process of building the temple include travertine, tufa, brick, and pumice. These materials varied in order to reduce its weight. The colored marble on the wall symbolized imperial authority. The sphere is though to symbolize eternity and perfection and the bronze panels symbolized a starry night sky. The Etruscan Temples And The Parthenon During the fifth century and Eighth century BCE, The Etruscan Temples and The Parthenon were built and valued by their cultures for many spiritual and cultural reasons. Similar to the Parthenon, The Etruscan Temples are built with influences from Greece. However, Both have different appearances based off of there medium, purpose, and architecture. The Etruscan Temple and the Parthenon both have strong stances within there cultures and provide peace and empowerment for the population of the time. Both structures are two similar ancient buildings, though there differences in culture and architecture set them apart. The Etruscan culture was located in central Italy to the north of Rome. The Etruscan Temples were built by the Etruscans during the Archaic period (600–480 BCE). By the time archaeologists discovered the Etruscan Temples, they were very worn down and most were no longer standing, though, they were measured to about 5x6 meters long with a height of 2 meters with the altar of ten steps in the front of the temple."The Etruscans made small temples, like little houses with pointed roofs, entirely of wood, but then outside, they had freizes and cornices and crests of terra cotta so the upper part of the temple would seem as almost made of earthenware..." In this article, I'm going to delve into some of the ones I was lucky enough to experience. Now, it's important to point out early on, that this is by no means a list of the 'best' temples and covers only a very, very small portion of a vast expansive network of temples scattered across the continent. However, this is a list of my personal favourites and of temples, I would highly recommend anyone in the area (or thinking of going to the area) visits. Tulum In many senses, Tulum has it all. The Temple Of Artemis At Ephesus The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus: World Wonder The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, also known as the Artemision, was once a remarkable sight that was considered to be one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The temple itself was a rather mysterious as not much is known about the rituals that may have taken place there. It is known that the Ephesian held Artemis is the highest honor. It was believed by some that Artemis herself was born at the location of the temple (Iosa, pg. 3). The temple had many motifs dedicated to this believe, it can be considered "the Nativity Temple of Artemis" ("The Earlier Temple of Artemis at Ephesus", pg. 16). Wood applied for a grant from the British Museum to excavate the site after discovering it while helping to build a railroad between Izmir and Denilzi (Jenkins, pg. 51). While excavating the great theatre in May of 1966, Wood found an inscription describing silver figures that were dedicated to the goddess Artemis. The inscription also mentioned a procession that would carry these objects to the temple on the goddess's birthday. Using this Wood realized that if he found the gates, the Magnesian Gate and the Coressian Gate, described in the passage he could find the location of the Temple of Artemis. He found the Magnesian Gate by the end of 1967 followed later by the Coressian (Jenkins, pg. 52). The temple itself was finally found by the end of 1869. Wood later published an account of the excavation, including what he thought what the temple may have looked like. In 1904, the site was revisited D. G. Hogarth and A. E. Henderson. They researched the temple's earlier history and determined that the site had three incarnations (Jenkins, pg. 53). The Artemision was built in the early Ionic style of Greek architecture, as can be seen from the columns. The columns were unusual as they had capitals that had large rosettes on them instead of the normal volutes. • 27. Movie Analysis : Temple Grandin Temple Grandin is a film that relies heavily on mise en scene to show audiences the amazing way into which those with autism can see the world and perceive and then solve problems they are faced with on a daily basis. The filmmakers cleverly use mise en scene to help communicate the central theme of the film of being different, not less. It gives viewers a way to relate to Temple, to see and understand what her world is like. They are able to spend the length of the film in her shoes and learn what it's like to think outside the box. To allow the audience a peek into the mind of Temple, the filmmakers had to find a way to show how she connects things in the real world to things she has stored in her memory that allows her to make sense of the situation. One example of this is when Temple first arrives Arizona, as she is exiting the airplane, the audience is introduced to the very literal interpretation of the world that she has. In the scorching heat as she walks down the stairs off the plane she not only feels the heat, she can see it. She looks around and everywhere she looks she sees fire. Her mind interprets the heat she is feeling and automatically thinks of everything related to heat thus showing fire. Mise en scene allows the filmmakers to properly set each scene to really show the inner workings of Temple's mind. One great example of this is when she fixes the gate on her aunt's farm. To any "normal" person it's just a gate that you have to get out of your car ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 59. The Peoples Temple The Peoples Temple began as a church that supported social equality and justice, but slowly changed into a prophetic movement; a network of individuals, tightly organized in a communal group that attaches its identity to charismatic leadership and the teachings of that leader. The movement's leader Jim Jones claimed to be the "God–sent prophet" . In order to expand, he later moved his congregation to California and eventually Guyana where he created the closed community of Jonestown. However, in 1978, members of Jonestown murdered Congressman Leo Ryan, and all residents of Jonestown committed suicide. The apocalyptic beliefs of the Peoples Temple shaped its identity and led to the murder of Congressman Ryan, this belief also marked its demise. By using apocalyptic literature, the book of Revelation, as reference, the actions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Peoples Temple is an Alternative Religious Movement, which is an alternative religious group or organization that, typically, is separated from the larger society both in its theological beliefs and its practices of those beliefs. Indeed, when the Peoples Temple first emerged, Rebecca Moore described it saying: Demographic figures are uncertain, with one source claiming that the congregation was one–fifth African American by 1960, and another asserting it was more than fifty percent African American. The building was constructed to be a religious site by a Buddhist organization in Taiwan. The first thing that catches the attention, is the Chinese architecture of the temple and all of the Chinese words on the outside of the temple. The words on the four pillars of the gate, represent the four Bodhisattva vows the Buddhists take to complete enlightenment. There are many rooms on the outside of the temple that look like they may be used for teaching or for programs being run at the temple. The temple contains the images of many bodhisattvas,Buddha's, and disciples. The images of the Buddha's and bodhisattvas are the focus of the rooms and outside. For example, in the main shrine and Bodhisattva hall, the focus are the images. Another example is the garden of the eighteen arhats in which the Buddha is surrounded by his first disciples. The other garden that is in the temple is the Vessel of Compassion for Universal Liberation. The main image in this garden is that of Avalofitesvara Bodhisattva. The other images depicted are of heaven kings. The bodhisattva is important because the vows of this Bodhisattva are of a compassionate mind and the power of wisdom. This bodhisattva answers the prayers of sentient beings no matter where they are and manifests in different forms. These eighteen arhats extinguished all defilements and afflictions. They had reached nirvana and their righteousness is exemplary to all Buddhists. Comparatively, symbols play an important role in buddhism and we can see this through the offers made to the Buddha's and bodhisattvas. For example, incense symbolizes inner peace, a lamp offering symbolizes the brightening of our vision and the enhancement of our wisdom. In addition, in the images, mudras or certain objects are a symbol of important rules to follow. Such as in image of the Bodhisattva Samantabhadra, the elephant symbolizes practice. The sounds that are used are that of instruments during the service in the main shrine and the sound of bells which usually mark the initiation of a service or other announcements. Furthermore, the smells that are used throughout the temple are incense. Incense is used as an offering and it is meant to help the Buddhist concentrate and focus on meditating. • 63. Analysis Of The Temple Of Hera The Early Classical Greek Temple of Hera II from Paestum, Italy, built circa 460 BCE, has influenced many works, such as the Carolingian Palatine Chapel built by Odo of Metz in Aachen, Germany from 792–805 BCE under command of the patron, Charlemagne. The Second Temple of Hera is one of the most studied Greek temples since it is in such good condition and has so much to offer historians. The Palatine Chapel, highly inspired by ancient Greek architectural design, was closely supervised by Charlemagne as his personal project, and built by Odo of Metz. The Temple of Hera II and the Palatine Chapel are similar due to the influence ancient Greek works had on later European art, such as the Carolingian period. Art from these periods influenced the important aspects of art seen today. Religion was a huge motivator for both of these periods, and held deep emotional connections for many artists. I find this to be somewhat relatable, since I also need emotional attachment as a motivator to complete my artwork sometimes. These designs resemble those of today in the amount of effort and forethought put into planning and building them, however, the complexity of these older religious structures lies in the artistic and visual nature of the building, rather than the efficiency–related accomodations one would observe today. This demonstrates the metamorphosis of human priorities over the centuries. Both of the images to be discussed (Temple of Hera II and Palatine Chapel) speak to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 67. Ezekiel's Vision And Prophetic Declaration Of A New Temple Introduction Ezekiel's vision and prophetic declaration of a new temple is among the most debatable text within the Old Testament. In the twenty–fifth year of Ezekiel's exile, God instructed him to look and listen carefully by paying close attention to everything that he was shown. Not only was he supposed to see, hear and grasp, he also had to provide this information to Israel (Ez 40:4) . The vision was to provide hope, a spiritual renewal and a future depiction of Israel's restoration. Although the prophet Ezekiel, in chapters 40–48, delineated an imaginative depiction of a future temple, ancient and modern scholars view the text as problematic and devise exceptional challenges in its interpretation. The religion, previously known as Wings of Deliverance, was built on the goal of creating a congregation society that would overcome injustices, such as racism and poverty. Wings of Deliverance was first founded after Jones and his wife left Methodism because of the religion's racial views. Though Jones had no theological training, he was a very charismatic and persuasive speaker, which enticed many people to his cause. The second and third step can be considered the investigation by the US government through congressman Leo Ryan and the Jonestown defects that tried to escape with Ryan. After his convincing speech, about 900 people, including 276 children, took their lives by drinking poison. However, this "suicide" can be considered a murder because many of the people who died (the children) did not have a say and/or did not fully understand what was happening and why they were doing what they were doing.
