Mister Watts of Great Expectations
"He was whatever he needed to be, what we asked him to be... a teacher, a magician, a savior, a
life." (245) Mister Watts is one of the central focuses of the story along with Dolores, Matilda's
mother. The two characters are polar opposites in the way they make their decisions and view the
world. With growth comes decisiveness in which comes greater changes, the motif of choice is
entwined all through the novel of Mister Pip, whether its Dolores deciding to hide the novel, "Great
Expectations" from the villagers causing greater occurrences or Mister Watts becoming a shape
shifter; taking the form of what is needed, including his life. Mister Watts is a bizarre looking fellow
with his eyes bulged "like they wanted to leave ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He respected everyone's stories and opinions because after all, they are their opinions and not his.
The ingenuity of Mr. Watts has always given him an upper hand over everyone, how clever he was
to talk the Rambo down as well as make him look ridiculous in front of the villagers after him
shouting at Mr. Watts saying "I will fuck you up the arse" (161) and how skillful he was to
reinterpret and recite his version of "Great Expectations" so that children with basic or even below
basic learning capabilities are able to understand a complex story with a underlining theme. On the
other hand, Dolores values the elements of faith, religion and morals over all other. She is
overzealous when situations are involving these items and by acting this way, she gives off a
negative ambiance which is contradicting the overall image she is trying to create. Her faith and
morals are tightly fabricated with her religion, how things are viewed in her eyes as well as through
the eyes of God. She is shaken by the efforts to instill the belief of imagination over the belief of
God in Matilda so she barges into the classroom a number of times telling the children stories
hopefully to rekindle the flame of the word of God. "Now listen. Faith is like oxygen. It keeps you

Better Than Revenge
A warm evening breeze blew through Reese Todd's short blonde hair as she took long strides
towards the stadium. Knowing that the roads were blocked, she walked through the palm tree–lined
streets. Never had she dared explore this city even though it was only about 75 miles from her
vacation home in Cabo Frio. The crowd grew denser as she found it harder to keep moving at a
constant pace and ended up squeezing through any space she could find to get ahead. As she neared
the field, screams of excitement filled her ears, but later, those would have a different meaning. The
doors flew open to the security checkpoint and she was able to pick up her pace. The savory smell of
buttery popcorn and hot dogs blended perfectly with the sweet aromas of cotton candy and soda.
The guard at the door ushered her to the side after looking through her bag. He pulled out the gun
from within and started to say into his walkie–talkie, "Fellas, I think we've found Mr. X," but not
before Reese could pull out her badge and, after careful examination, was waved through. They had
been warned, she realised, about Mr. X. They know he, or she, should be here tonight She had even
overheard some terrified fans sporting 1D merchandise talking about him. Their hands trembled as
the words spilled from their mouths, knowing that tonight might be their lasts. Reese made her way
towards her seat which was almost on the floor of the stadium, but just high enough so she could see
everything that was going on

Essay on James Baldwin
Gage Krakower
History 228: African American History
Dr. Jennifer Oast
MWF 2:00–2:50
February 10, 2012 James A. Baldwin
James A. Baldwin, a homosexual African–American novelist, was once quoted saying that the most
dangerous creation of any society is the man who has nothing to lose. What it means is that society's
chief concern should be a person who has absolutely nothing to lose by always sticking to their
beliefs, yet everything to gain. James Baldwin embodies that quote to the absolute fullest. Not only
did he push the boundaries with his works in novels and articles on racial and sexual matters, but he
also was a key component in the civil rights movement and that's why James Baldwin was important

The novel resembles Baldwin's childhood a lot based on the fact that the novels central theme is
about a young man named John Grimes who is the innocent victim of his father, a religious man
steeped in disgust and narrowness. It relates to Baldwin's childhood because he was the innocent
victim of a father whom was religious and had a lot of hatred as well. It's a milestone in the
development of American literature because it is the first novel and/or short story about Negroes to
be written from a non–racial point of view.
Shortly after publishing his first novel, Baldwin would go on to receive a Guggenheim fellowship.
In 1956 he would publish his second novel Giovanni's Room. Giovanni's Room fired up a lot of
controversy because of the explicit amount of homoerotic content. It also was controversial because
he explored interracial relationships, a very touchy topic at the time. "The plot of the novel itself
stems from Baldwin's analysis of the nature and character of homosexuality." Also, Baldwin was
able to connect with a wider audience because too much of the public's surprise Giovanni's Room
was primarily about white people, not African–Americans. He was also making references to
himself in this novel because the main character was living in Paris. Baldwin's next two novels,

Heroes: Fantastic Four And The Civil Rights Movement

Fantastic Four
Fantastic Four were 4 times the action, 4 times the adventure,4 times the fantastic! They were
created during the 1960s whereas the civil rights movement demonstrated equal rights for everyone.
This heroic group came together despite their differences in order to make the world a better place.
Fantastic Four represents the rapid changes in the world such as cultural and scientific.
The main artist responsible for the creation of Fantastic Four is Stan Lee. In Publishers Weekly
article it states, "Fantastic Four was co–created by Stan Lee" (Kidcast, Publishers Weekly).
However, Jack Kirby played a role for their creation as well, he was artist and co–plotter. As Pender
states, "Marvel ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was a time where people were marginalized due to their race and skin color. Martin Luther King
Jr. played a major role in the civil rights movement seeking justice and equality for African
Americans. He was a very ambitious and a determined man who stood firm and fought for what he
believed in. As a result, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was issued causing and an end to segregation
and prohibiting racial discrimination. The economy during the 1960s was a time of prosperity with
low unemployment rates, and an increase in technological advances.
The social issue Fantastic Four represents is a group of people coming together to accomplish a
goal. It encourages team work and it allows them to rely on one another. It as well promotes a sense
of assurance and confidence between each other.
The youth in the 1960s resembles much like Fantastic Four. The children from the baby boom after
WWII were reaching adulthood, and were shaping their opinions and ideas. The youth movement
came together and fought for their beliefs. These young adolescents weren't like previous
generations who were very traditional, they however had different mindsets. As Jazzlizzle states,
"The accomplishments of the youth of this era greatly influenced the way society is today"
(Jazzlizzle, The 1960s Youth Movement). Fantastic Four is much similar like the youth in the sixties

Sesame Street And It's Influence On American Culture
Since its inception in 1969, Sesame Street has been revered as one of the most incredible pieces of
children's Television, continuing its airtime into 2018. It was one of the first shows of its kind and
revolutionized how we see children's TV. However, not everything about the show has been perfect,
which is to be expected, but we view it as something of a paragon of youth–centric broadcasting.
Renata Adler, of the New Yorker, was around for its inception and claims that "Sesame Street is [...]
with lapses, the most intelligent and important program in television. That is not saying much yet"
(Adler, 1972). America in the 60s was not what it is today, it had a much different culture, but we

Some of the most salient ones being a change in the cast (both human and monster). Many of our
beloved characters do not appear nearly as much, in fact, Bert and Ernie have been pushed into
special segments and the show is mostly run by Elmo and newcomer Abby Cadabby. While this has
not been the most favorable of changes for many adults, who wish they could see the show with
their kids and relate and chuckle along with their favorite characters, engagement has still been
primarily positive through the years. While I personally feel that alienating the adult audience may
negatively impact the potential for parents to take time with their kids to watch the show, it is more
important that the kids are engaged. Still though, Sesame Street remains at the forefront of children's
TV. They continue to provide programming that is inclusive and engaging. They recently introduced
a muppet with autism and have used their platform to both normalize autism as well as teach kids to

Dunkin Donuts Persuasive Letters
Dear Dunkin' Donuts' Current Franchisee,
I have been a frequent, satisfied customer of your food chain for over fifteen years, and I plan to
continue enjoying my breakfast at your locations. The donuts and coffee I purchase at Dunkin' is
delicious, and the service is always helpful and welcoming. Considering this, about a year ago I
wrote an email to you regarding opening a Dunkin' Donuts in my current hometown of Dalton,
Georgia. In my email I explained that not only would this fast–food restaurant attract the college
students and coffee lovers in the area, but it would also add an affordable breakfast restaurant to the
area along with competition to competitors such as Starbucks and Krispy Kreme. Unfortunately, I
waited weeks for an email, with a response, that never came. Even if you had no intentions of
opening a Dunkin' Donuts here, an answer and explanation in the form of an email or letter would
have been appreciated. I understand that you hold an integral role in the ... Show more content on

While growing up, this fast–food restaurant has held an integral place in my heart. Knowing how
much I loved donuts, my grandparents have made it a tradition to bring a box every time they come
to visit. Because they live so far away, the family only gets to see them once every other year. When
they arrive, it is always exciting to see them carry on the custom and appear with the box of goodies.
Ever since I was a little girl, I have loved the variety of donuts that Dunkin' has to offer. From
Boston Kreme to Strawberry Frosted, the variation of these tasty treats never seems to disappoint.
Dunkin' Donuts does not just hold significance fulfilling my cravings, but it holds great importance
in the memories I have made with my grandparents. So, you may ask, "Why Dunkin'?" I choose this
company because it is not just a restaurant. It is an opportunity: an opportunity to create memories,
an opportunity to change lives, and an opportunity to help the company

4. What is Dunkin' Donuts value proposition?
I believe that Dunkin' Donuts has it's value proposition deeply rooted in the idea that it offers quality
donuts and the freshest coffee every time at a low price. Considering the fact that Dunkin' Donuts
aims to sell high quality products at lower rates than it's competitors, such as Panera Bread, i think
that the company may have created a niche that will attract and retain their customers. Also, by
updating their menu and retail outlets to be in line with what consumers want today, Dunkin' Donuts
will always enjoy the ability to offer something new and exciting to its customer.
5. How is Dunkin' Donuts' growing its share of customer? How has the brand evolved accordingly?
Dunkin' Donuts' is effectively growing it's share of customers by strategically solidifying their niche
in the Franchising area. Since franchisee–managed stores are a relatively risk–free means of
expanding Dunkin' Donuts' market coverage. Dunkin' Donuts' is also growing it's share of customers

Dunkin Donuts District Manager Introduction Dunkin' Donuts has over six–thousand locations in
the United States and serves over three and a half million customers daily. The biggest competitor
for Dunkin' Donuts are Peet's Coffee & Tea, Starbucks, and McDonalds. In order to maintain market
competitiveness Dunkin' Donuts must remain driven towards service excellence. This starts by
hiring staff members that are eager to provide the best customer service with every interaction they
have and be able to produce an excellent product. "Dunkin' Brand offers a comprehensive series of
award–winning training programs for crew members, managers and franchises designed to foster
deep connections to our brands' heritage and improve the guest experience and business results at

Donuts operates by a simple philosophy but one that is carried through each store. "Make and serve
the freshest, most delicious coffee and donuts quickly and courteously in modern well–
merchandised stores" (Dunkin Donuts, n.d., pp. 1) Being a new district manager tasked with
opening five new locations will help fulfill Rosenberg's vision of providing the best product around

Examples Of Managing Demand
Strategies for Managing Demand Shifting demand into other time periods 1. Incentives 2. Sales
promotions 3. Advertising campaigns Offering products or services with counter–cyclical demand
patterns Partnering with suppliers to reduce information distortion along the supply chain Shifting
demand into other time periods: As a customer, I came across an examples of shifting the demand
into other time period many times and make me think why companies are offering such deal. It is
clean now that companies want to shift the demand of certain product into other time period to keep
revenue generation and balancing the demand. Winter coat: While visiting Macy's in month of

It helps both to Dunkin Donuts & Baskin–Robbin to balance the business and optimal utilization of
resource during idleness of their original business hrs. Also it gives an option to the family and
friends visiting at one stop shop to enjoy coffee, breakfast, food and ice cream. Lawn guru: Lawn
guru is another example of counter cyclical demand where company is offering services to their
customer in northern America during two different seasons. Lawn guru is providing Lawn mowing
service during the summer and snow cleaning during winter. It helps the company to balance the
business and optimal utilization of resource during idleness of the summer and winter. Partnering
with suppliers: The third approach to managing demand recognizes the information distortion
caused by ordering goods in batches along a supply chain. Even though a customer may require
daily usage of an item, customer probably does not purchase that item daily. Neither do retail stores
restock their shelves continuously. By the time a replenishment order reaches distributors,
wholesalers, manufacturers, and their suppliers, the demand pattern for a product can appear
extremely erratic. To control the situation manufacturers, their suppliers, and customers form
partnerships in which demand information is shared and orders are placed in a more continuous
fashion. Hewlett–Packard (HP): When HP executives examined the sales of one of its printers at a

Differences Between Peet 's Coffee And Dunkin Doughnuts
My project will be on the differences between Peet's Coffee and Dunkin Doughnuts. I have
pondered about what makes these coffee shops different from one another. During my exploration
on Wabash Avenue, I came to the conclusion that location is important regarding customer
population in stores. I also realized the importance of customers, customer service, store
management, and store atmosphere. Because of my project I got to understand what my topic truly
was. At first, I thought that it would be based completely off of location. Throughout time though, I
realized that I would discuss how the effect of a store's environment depends more on the store's
management than the location itself. Management plays a key role in the store itself. ... Show more

Wabash is located in South Loop. Wabash surrounds Columbia College and restaurants. In the
1960's Wabash was flooded with all sorts of shops and people. In the present time mostly college
students roam on Wabash. In the past there were all ages on Wabash. I have this knowledge from the
photos I discovered at the Harold–Washington Library. One particular photo stuck out to me out of
the 6 I observed. The photo was of crowded adults waiting to get into a christmas shop on Wabash.
It stuck out to me because it showed how even back then customers still got excited to buy new
products. In present day we do the same. Waiting for the next updated Iphone or to go black friday
shopping to get the best deals. Which shows how important management can be by, promoting new
products to bring in customers and get business. Peets and Dunkin each have posters to show off
their new beverages or deals that they have in store. For example, Dunkin has a special between 2
and 6pm for 2 dollar iced drinks. These posters really work because of their location being right
where college students are. College students love their coffee. In other words the location is easy
and convenient for them. It's all about convenience for customers. If the coffee shops were really out
of the way and not by campuses. The shops would not have that much business because it is not in a
convenient location and their advertisements would not be seen. After everything considered I got to

Analysis Of ' Dunkin Donuts '
The retail environment that I decided to analyze is one that is very familiar to most Americans in
today's world: Dunkin Donuts. According to the University of Harvard, 54% of Americans over the
age of 18 drink at least one coffee a day, with 65% of it being consumed during breakfast.
According to the Dunkin Donuts Press Kit of February 2014, currently the Dunkin Donuts franchise
is bought by 11% of Americans on a daily basis and has nearly 11,000 stores in 33 countries. But of
all of those stores, I chose one in the quiet suburban town of Chester, New Jersey. Though not a very
large town, Chester is built up with many restaurants and shops for tourists and locals alike to come
and spend their time and money. The traffic flow to this specific store is fairly unique, in the sense
that it is located right off of the major highway in Route 206 south. When I pulled off of Route 206
and into the parking lot, I nearly overshot the entire drive and almost ended up in the shrubbery out
by the road because the turn was so sudden and tight. Watching cars enter the parking lot, I realized
I was not the only one who was having this issue. Things can get fairly tricky very quickly at this
store when you've got cars coming down a major highway going forty five miles per hour and then
all of a sudden they slam on their brakes to make the sharp turn into the Dunkin Donuts parking lot.
I sat in my car and observed people entering the parking lot for merely twenty five minutes and in

Role of Children's Television in the Global Marketplace...
Abstract
It was not long ago that there was wide agreement among broadcasters, scholars, educators and
parents concerning the ultimate goal of children's television programming: to educate. Today, it
would be difficult to find even two people to agree on such terms. Popular opinion would lead us to
believe that broadcasters now seek to exploit the youngest members of their audience––turning them
into life–long viewers (and consumers). Scholars and educators woefully condemn television for the
"dumbing down" of America. Parents, no longer present during all television viewing hours, may
not even be aware of what their children are watching. When we add an international perspective
into the mix, we inevitably invite phrases such ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first (and most common) is "Open Sesame." In this format, the opening and closing segments of
the show are made locally, but the rest of the program is compiled from material produced by the
United States and leased to the foreign country.2 The second method (and the one most commonly
touted by CTW ambassadors) is co–production. In this method, foreign nations play a larger role in
the compilation of footage for the show: some is produced locally, some is from the United States.
As of 1988, there were 15 co–productions worldwide, and that number has remained quite constant
since that time.3 The U.S. version uses little, if any, foreign material.4
CTW remains a not–for–profit U.S. corporation with a 1994 operations reserve fund of $34 million
and an endowment of $71 million.5. Foreign "franchisers" of "Sesame Street" are restricted by an
agreement with CTW that does not permit the program to be aired with commercials. All profit
comes, in turn, from toy sales and is immediately turned over and utilized by the extensive research–
design system that is unique to CTW and "Sesame Street."6
It is, in fact, the CTW research system that has drawn the most criticism from the global front. The
system implements two types of testing: formative and summative. Formative tests are those

My Experience At Dunkin Donuts
Everybody remembers his or her first job most likely not every detail, but definitely the experiences
one learned. My first job had its ups and downs similar to a roller coaster. Being a Dunkin Donuts
employee is a satisfying feeling because daily you're surrounded by not only coffee but delicious
donuts. My experience as a Dunkin Donuts employee taught me patience and the importance of
being a hard worker. First, I understood the importance of patience because a cup of coffee is made
every second. I started my first day at Dunkin Donuts on a Saturday and quickly learned how busy
the weekends can be. I woke up feeling real nervous that morning. I felt even more nervous

Analysis Of The Novel ' Mister Pip '
In my opinion a novel has to capture the reader's attention in the first two pages and hold that same
attention throughout the whole journey for it to be a novel that is worthwhile reading. Lloyd Jones'
literary style throughout the novel Mister Pip is captivating, compelling, grotesque and enlightening
all at once. Through the various personalities and explorations of each character and through back
stories that unfold through flashbacks and story telling, Lloyd Jones lures the reader into the story.
When readers express their fondness for a novel it is generally because the first few pages reel them
in and intrigues them to learn more about the story to come. Lloyd Jones opens the novel with a
detailed description of one of the main characters Mr Watts. By starting the book with 'Everyone
called him Pop Eye.' (page 1) creates a mystery about who Mr Pop Eye and Mrs Pop Eye could be
and why they are so important to be the introduction to the novel, this gives the impression that he is
a major key character to the plot of this novel. It is also the introduction to Bougainville and the time
of place that the reader is taken to. We learn that Papua New Guinea is rich with copper and that
most of the men on the island have moved away from the villages to work at the mine and the
women and children are left to look after the village with the exception of a couple of older men that
would be able to do the more difficult jobs that women couldn 't do such as, Gilbert 's father

Analysis Of Tom Jones 's ' Mister Pip ' Essay
The Development of Tension
In Mister Pip, Lloyd Jones explores the ability of the creative space of literature to mediate
transformations of culture and identity. Set during the Bougainville civil war in the early 1990s, the
island's sole white inhabitant, Mr Watts reopens a dilapidated schoolhouse and reads Great
Expectations to the village children. Written in the first person retrospective narrative style, we
witness how the villagers are caught in the military conflict just as inexorably as Matilda is caught
between the tension between her incongruous teacher, Mr Watts, and her fiercely religious mother,
Dolores. They battle for the control over the mind and soul of Matilda, developing the theme of
ignorance versus education. The consequent tension between Dolores and Matilda illustrates the
theme of adolescence, of challenging parental beliefs and affirming one's values.
With all foreign contact withdrawn from the besieged Bougainville, Matilda becomes infatuated
with the world of Great Expectations, whose cultural unfamiliarity is exemplified through the
animosity Dolores bears toward Mr Watts. Mr Watts brings new, Western ideas to the classroom and
encourages the use of creativity and imagination to seek escapism and exposure through literature,
"giving us all another room to lounge around in" – the room of the mind. Matilda becomes riveted
by the adventures of Pip in Victorian England London, a city whose contours soon become more
real than her own landscape. "I

For many Americans, the simple mention of the word "neighborhood" immediately conjures up
memories of Fred Rogers singing the iconic theme song of his long–running PBS show, "Mr.

many of Mr. Rogers' neighbors, such as Officer Clemmons, a black police officer who would often
drop by to teach viewers about the job of policing, to impart some practical wisdom for living
peacefully with one's neighbors, or simply to check up on the kind, cardigan–wearing man.
Characters like Officer Clemmons added to the overt portrayal of Mr. Rogers' neighborhood as a

One of the ways that youths in inner cities find stability in their unsafe neighborhoods is by
following the code of the street and "campaigning for respect on the street– asserting their
masculinity, confidence, and social status through posturing and fighting." (Harding 2010:29). An
example of this pressure to follow this code of the street can be seen in the fourth season of The
Wire. In one of the first episodes of the season, after walking out of Cutty's gym, Namond Brice is
met by a wild–eyed Sharrod, who tells Namond that he needs to "back off" his corner. Not wanting
to appear weak, Namond shoves Sharrod, unaware that he was high and carrying a gun. In another

Michael accompanies Namond to retrieve his stash, reminding him that "you gotta step to him, put

was living with his mother– season five shows Namond channeling confrontation in a healthier
manner: Namond is part of the debate team at his school. After leaving his mother to live with
Bunny, Namond no longer faced pressure to follow the code of the street and defend his reputation
with violence. In contrast to Namond's storyline, in which a better neighborhood allowed him to

Effects Of Sesame Street On The Education Of Young Children
When introduced to the idea of an epidemic, people are urged to think of viruses, fashion trends, or
even peaks of crime. One does not see something as virtuous as Sesame Street to be a wide–
spreading contagion. Yet, Sesame Street provoked a social epidemic as one of the most influential
children 's television programs of its time. Malcolm Gladwell has studied the effects of Sesame
Street on the education of young children in his novel, The Tipping Point. He has three overall
generalizations of all epidemics, including the Law of the Few, the Stickiness Factor, and the Power
of Context. I will apply these generalizations to his example of Sesame Street to support Gladwell's
argument. In addition, I will support his argument using the philosophical theories of Alasdair
McIntyre and Theodore M. Porter. Overall, Gladwell poses a convincing argument that the success
of Sesame Street is due to the complete combination of his three generalizations. The beginning of
Sesame Street as an epidemic began with the very start of the television program. Television
producer, Joan Ganz Cooney embarked on a mission to create a children's learning epidemic
(Gladwell 89). Many epidemics that are covered in Gladwell's novel are unintentional. The
producers of Sesame Street, however, purposefully researched the effect of their show to ensure that
it was impactful. It is arguable whether or not they wanted to provoke an epidemic, but the effects of
the program were completely intentional. In

Mister Pip Analysis
Non–fiction is a writing form that can give readers an insight into understanding events that may
have occurred in a different time or place to that of their own. Mister Pip is a novel written by New
Zealand author, Lloyd Jones and based on true events. It takes place on the island of Bougainville

brutality as the locals attempted to protect their land against Australian mines. The novel is
conveyed through the innocent 15–year–old eyes of Matilda, a local girl, featuring the mysterious

The wartime setting of Bougainville was central to the writer's purpose, once again, when Grace
passed away. The village mourns the loss and buries her body as a community. Matilda states the
process of her burial as "it was the world getting on with its business". The way that the term 'world'
is used portrays that this is the extent of their world. They are trapped. Then the term 'business' is
used, a term with connotations of formality, clinicalness, and removal. This term may have been
used to show that deaths are so frequent in the setting that it has become normality. This sentence in
the setting may have therefore been used by Jones to portray how devastating the war is and to help
us to understand his purpose in showing the brutality and loss in the written text. In relation to the
wider world, during World War One and Two, soldier and civilian deaths skyrocketed. At first each
individual was mourned and paid with honour but as time went on each death just became another
statistic as with the setting witnessed in 'Mister Pip'.
Another time that the wartime setting of Bougainville was central to the writer's purpose was when
the Redskins arrived in the village for the last time in the novel. They arrived again in search of Pip,
a character that they did not know to of been a character in the novel 'Great Expectations' by Charles
Dickens. He did not exist. The commander states "I am finished with being lied to". The term

Essay on The Relationship Change Between Pip and Joe Gargery
How has the relationship changed between Pip and Joe Gargery?
The relationship between Pip and Joe changes dramatically. As Pip gets older and has turned into a
gentleman, Joe has stayed the same, with his clumsy actions and lack of manners. This creates a
divide between what used to be a loving relationship.
When Pip was a small boy, he felt close to Joe, as Joe was like a father figure and Pip looked up to
him. This meant that Joe and Pip had a very strong bond and they were very close. They also shared
similarities, as they both had to face being beaten with the 'tickler' by Mrs Joe Gargery. This brought
them closer together. It also shows that there are no complications in their relationship and they find

Joe and Pip's relationship is brought closer when Mrs Joe Gargery doesn't want Joe to learn, 'no

Joe without her finding out, it is like a special secret, that only
Pip and Joe know about. This brings them closer together, as they both share something special.
Joe and Pip are not afraid of showing how close their relationship is.
They do this whilst having dinner. They talk over the table, this shows a strong bond between them.
It is also like a link or a special connection between the two of them.
When Pip has to leave, to go to Miss Havisham's house, he finds it hard to say goodbye to Joe. He
has never parted from Joe before and it is like the strong bond between them suddenly starting to
weaken.
As Pip grows older, becoming more of a gentleman, he grows further and further appart from Joe.
This becomes a problem, as they now feel awkward to be in each other's presence.
Joe feels that he has to now ask for permission to see Pip. In the letter from Pip to Joe it says 'Dear
Mr Pip'. This shows that Joe isn't as close to Pip as he used to be, as he now calls him Mr Pip, which
is more formal. Joe also calls himself an 'affectionate servant'. This

Mister Pip written by Lloyd Jones is a novel recounted by the protagonist Matilda. Set in 1990's
Bougainville, we see Matilda begin to question her Mother's traditional idea's about life as a civil
war rages between the rebels and the Redskins in her homeland. Mr. Watts or "Pop eye" is given the
role teaching the village children, being the only educated, and consequentially, white man left on

She continues to try and "save" her daughter, the power of unconditional love overcoming their even
more obviously marked differences.
Dolores then tries to impose her faith on Matilda in hope she will begin to value God over Great
Expectations to lead her away from the white world. Dolores comes unannounced to Matilda's class
and tries to educate the children on the only thing she knows well: the importance of faith "she
didn't know anything outside what she knew from the bible" but as Mr. Watts gets further through
the novel Pip becomes yet even more important to Matilda. Dolores never stops in trying to steer
Matilda away from the white world. The world she knows barely anything about, the world she
thinks is evil. Despite their ever–increasing differences Dolores will always continue to protect
Matilda from what she believes is bad.
We see the power of unconditional love shown again through Matilda and Dolores's contrast when
Matilda discovers Great Expectations to have been stolen by her Mother. When Dolores hides Great
Expectations much strife is caused. The Red Skins visit Matilda's island, threatening to burn all of
their possessions unless they give up "Pip" who is only a character from a book and cannot be given

The Role Of Children In Goodnight Mister Tom, By Michelle...
Children look up to parents as their role models and influencers, however sometimes they do not

evacuated to the country at the anticipation of the war. The child, William Beech, is sent away by his
abusive mother in London to the small country town of Little Weirwold to live with a stranger, Tom

The baby was described as 'smelly' and she had tape on her mouth to stop her from 'trying to get
attention' as Mrs Beech claimed that the baby also needed to learn discipline. She also has a warped
view of Will and the kind of person he is, shown when he brings home gifts from Little Weirwold
and she accuses him of begging for it or stealing it. She also accuses Will of being 'full of sin'
although it is obvious that he is polite and kind to others. When Will came back from the country
healthier and more confident than she remembered, she believed that she had to 'silence him into
obedience' and was scared that he had 'threatened her authority'. We can see that she is very insecure
about her role in society and as a mother. Mrs Beech is a bad parent is clearly unfit for bringing up
children.
Tom Oakley is a kind man who cares for and loves Will and is a positive role model for him. He is 'a

a parent figure. William Beech ends up being placed in his care when he is evacuated from London.
Tom lives in a graveyard near a church, and is only asked to care for Will because of this. It is
revealed that Tom lives where he does because his dead wife and child are buried there and he has a

A Study On Management Practices
MANAGEMENT PRACTICES Last Name/ First Name: Institution Affiliation: Introduction The
changes in the world today are very much tremendous as far as complexity in the way people do
conduct their everyday business is concerned. With the ever growing population that has been
brought by the advancement in technology, businesses are always under pressure to satisfy the
consumer's demand (Medina, 2014). Therefore, each and every day that passes there is always a
necessity for companies and organizations to work on improving their production and services
offered to their esteemed customers. With the fast depletion of resources, companies have had to
look for various ways that they can use to stay relevant in the business world that is changing every
day. Several businesses have invested in technologies due the efficiency regarding the services and
products they offer. Therefore, the companies have now been able to meet the needs of their
customers fast and satisfy them. Thus, the worry of customers meeting their requirements late even
though they requested for it late as a result of the rising population is reduced. Besides technology,
several other things also make a business to stand tall among its competitors. One such business that
has incorporated these other factors besides technology is the Dunkin Donuts store in the Midwest

Theme Of Goodnight Mist Tom
Introduction
William Beech is the protagonist, the main character, in the plot of Michelle Magorian's Goodnight
Mister Tom. A plot is the course of action in a literary work. He is evacuated from London during
the merge of World War II to a little village, Little Weirwold, at the country side north of the city.
As he arrives he is just an unloved, shy, uncared for and abused 8 year old boy. But as time goes by
in Little Weirwold, William transforms into a self–confident, happy boy.
As community is an important theme of the book, one could trace that the two contrasting settings

The comradiere community of Little Weirwold enhances Will's development.
He is continuously involved in the community. In several passages throughout the book, it is stated
that Will is developing as he lives in Little Weirwold, mainly because of the camaraderie – the

The whole community is "taking one for the team" as many of the residents take in evacuees.
Everyone knows about everyone as it is a close and small community. Everyone tries to help

Introduction
Romesh Gunesekera; the author of the novel Reef (1994), begins the story with a young boy by the
name of Triton, entering Mr Salgado's household as a "Kolla", meaning boy, and starting to become
weary of himself and his own capabilities. Throughout the novel, Triton faces certain hardships, but
quickly learns to overcome them as he begins to develop a sense of responsibility and independence
within the household. Mr Salgado becomes the "centre of Triton's world" and he is someone that
Triton looks up to and wants to become. However, everything changes when Miss Nili becomes the
central aspect of Mr Salgado's life and changes the relationships within the household, allowing
Triton to see things from a new perspective. Throughout the novel we see how Triton plays the role

the company and one that led to many loyal customers across the region. At the same time because
the stores are new and most of the customers in the area renew to the products, it will be crucial to

Analysis Of Pinocchio
According to the philosopher Georg Freidrick Hegel, one must follow particular steps in order to
achieve self–awareness. This journey includes a life or death struggle in the presence of fear in
which one opponent emerges the victor or master and one as the loser or slave. The loser must then
complete a creative work also while feeling fear before finally becoming a true human being. In
Disney's Pinocchio, the titular character undergoes the epitome of a Hegelian journey. Pinocchio
begins by facing a life or death struggle with the puppeteer Stromboli, then uses creativity to rescue
Geppetto, and, finally, Pinocchio both figuratively and literally becomes a real boy. Hegel's
theoretical journey begins with a life or death struggle. One ... Show more content on

Finally, Stromboli exits and Pinocchio is left curled up, sobbing, and asking "Jiminy where are
you?" In this moment, Pinocchio truly understands that he is not a real boy and is considered
inferior to many true humans. Facing him is a life of objectification, used by Stromboli in a puppet
show. Pinocchio is reduced to a mere object and, thus, beginning his Hegelian struggle to prove his
humanity. The second stage of the path to Hegelian self–awareness is a creative work. The loser
must use creativity while still feeling extreme fear in order to prove to himself that he is a human
being capable of thought and action. Toward the end of the movie, Geppetto goes out searching for
Pinocchio and ends up swallowed by a huge and horrifying whale named Monstro. Upon learning
this, Pinocchio launches a rescue mission for his father. He reaches the edge of the sea and, realizing
he needs to sink to the bottom of the ocean, thinks up the idea to tie a rock to himself. This allows
him to drop to the ocean floor where he may then continue his search for Monstro. Pinocchio asks
many fish where he might find the whale only to receive a terrified school of fish swimming away
from him. As he realizes what a horror Monstro must be to inspire such fear, his own trepidation
begins to build. Therefore, Pinocchio experiences the necessary fear required for this stage of the
Hegelian journey.

Mister Watts Of Great Expectations

  • 1. Mister Watts of Great Expectations "He was whatever he needed to be, what we asked him to be... a teacher, a magician, a savior, a life." (245) Mister Watts is one of the central focuses of the story along with Dolores, Matilda's mother. The two characters are polar opposites in the way they make their decisions and view the world. With growth comes decisiveness in which comes greater changes, the motif of choice is entwined all through the novel of Mister Pip, whether its Dolores deciding to hide the novel, "Great Expectations" from the villagers causing greater occurrences or Mister Watts becoming a shape shifter; taking the form of what is needed, including his life. Mister Watts is a bizarre looking fellow with his eyes bulged "like they wanted to leave ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He respected everyone's stories and opinions because after all, they are their opinions and not his. The ingenuity of Mr. Watts has always given him an upper hand over everyone, how clever he was to talk the Rambo down as well as make him look ridiculous in front of the villagers after him shouting at Mr. Watts saying "I will fuck you up the arse" (161) and how skillful he was to reinterpret and recite his version of "Great Expectations" so that children with basic or even below basic learning capabilities are able to understand a complex story with a underlining theme. On the other hand, Dolores values the elements of faith, religion and morals over all other. She is overzealous when situations are involving these items and by acting this way, she gives off a negative ambiance which is contradicting the overall image she is trying to create. Her faith and morals are tightly fabricated with her religion, how things are viewed in her eyes as well as through the eyes of God. She is shaken by the efforts to instill the belief of imagination over the belief of God in Matilda so she barges into the classroom a number of times telling the children stories hopefully to rekindle the flame of the word of God. "Now listen. Faith is like oxygen. It keeps you afloat at all times. Sometimes you need it. Sometimes you don't. but when you do need it you better be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Better Than Revenge A warm evening breeze blew through Reese Todd's short blonde hair as she took long strides towards the stadium. Knowing that the roads were blocked, she walked through the palm tree–lined streets. Never had she dared explore this city even though it was only about 75 miles from her vacation home in Cabo Frio. The crowd grew denser as she found it harder to keep moving at a constant pace and ended up squeezing through any space she could find to get ahead. As she neared the field, screams of excitement filled her ears, but later, those would have a different meaning. The doors flew open to the security checkpoint and she was able to pick up her pace. The savory smell of buttery popcorn and hot dogs blended perfectly with the sweet aromas of cotton candy and soda. The guard at the door ushered her to the side after looking through her bag. He pulled out the gun from within and started to say into his walkie–talkie, "Fellas, I think we've found Mr. X," but not before Reese could pull out her badge and, after careful examination, was waved through. They had been warned, she realised, about Mr. X. They know he, or she, should be here tonight She had even overheard some terrified fans sporting 1D merchandise talking about him. Their hands trembled as the words spilled from their mouths, knowing that tonight might be their lasts. Reese made her way towards her seat which was almost on the floor of the stadium, but just high enough so she could see everything that was going on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Essay on James Baldwin Gage Krakower History 228: African American History Dr. Jennifer Oast MWF 2:00–2:50 February 10, 2012 James A. Baldwin James A. Baldwin, a homosexual African–American novelist, was once quoted saying that the most dangerous creation of any society is the man who has nothing to lose. What it means is that society's chief concern should be a person who has absolutely nothing to lose by always sticking to their beliefs, yet everything to gain. James Baldwin embodies that quote to the absolute fullest. Not only did he push the boundaries with his works in novels and articles on racial and sexual matters, but he also was a key component in the civil rights movement and that's why James Baldwin was important in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The novel resembles Baldwin's childhood a lot based on the fact that the novels central theme is about a young man named John Grimes who is the innocent victim of his father, a religious man steeped in disgust and narrowness. It relates to Baldwin's childhood because he was the innocent victim of a father whom was religious and had a lot of hatred as well. It's a milestone in the development of American literature because it is the first novel and/or short story about Negroes to be written from a non–racial point of view. Shortly after publishing his first novel, Baldwin would go on to receive a Guggenheim fellowship. In 1956 he would publish his second novel Giovanni's Room. Giovanni's Room fired up a lot of controversy because of the explicit amount of homoerotic content. It also was controversial because he explored interracial relationships, a very touchy topic at the time. "The plot of the novel itself stems from Baldwin's analysis of the nature and character of homosexuality." Also, Baldwin was able to connect with a wider audience because too much of the public's surprise Giovanni's Room was primarily about white people, not African–Americans. He was also making references to himself in this novel because the main character was living in Paris. Baldwin's next two novels, Another Country and Tell Me How Long the Train's Been ... Heroes: Fantastic Four And The Civil Rights Movement Valerie Castillo April 29, 2015 English 1A Fantastic Four Fantastic Four were 4 times the action, 4 times the adventure,4 times the fantastic! They were created during the 1960s whereas the civil rights movement demonstrated equal rights for everyone. This heroic group came together despite their differences in order to make the world a better place. Fantastic Four represents the rapid changes in the world such as cultural and scientific. The main artist responsible for the creation of Fantastic Four is Stan Lee. In Publishers Weekly article it states, "Fantastic Four was co–created by Stan Lee" (Kidcast, Publishers Weekly). However, Jack Kirby played a role for their creation as well, he was artist and co–plotter. As Pender states, "Marvel ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was a time where people were marginalized due to their race and skin color. Martin Luther King Jr. played a major role in the civil rights movement seeking justice and equality for African Americans. He was a very ambitious and a determined man who stood firm and fought for what he believed in. As a result, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was issued causing and an end to segregation and prohibiting racial discrimination. The economy during the 1960s was a time of prosperity with low unemployment rates, and an increase in technological advances. The social issue Fantastic Four represents is a group of people coming together to accomplish a goal. It encourages team work and it allows them to rely on one another. It as well promotes a sense of assurance and confidence between each other. The youth in the 1960s resembles much like Fantastic Four. The children from the baby boom after WWII were reaching adulthood, and were shaping their opinions and ideas. The youth movement came together and fought for their beliefs. These young adolescents weren't like previous generations who were very traditional, they however had different mindsets. As Jazzlizzle states, "The accomplishments of the youth of this era greatly influenced the way society is today" (Jazzlizzle, The 1960s Youth Movement). Sesame Street And It's Influence On American Culture Since its inception in 1969, Sesame Street has been revered as one of the most incredible pieces of children's Television, continuing its airtime into 2018. It was one of the first shows of its kind and revolutionized how we see children's TV. However, not everything about the show has been perfect, which is to be expected, but we view it as something of a paragon of youth–centric broadcasting. Renata Adler, of the New Yorker, was around for its inception and claims that "Sesame Street is [...] with lapses, the most intelligent and important program in television. That is not saying much yet" (Adler, 1972). America in the 60s was not what it is today, it had a much different culture, but we have the creation of Sesame Street in its elder years ... Many of our beloved characters do not appear nearly as much, in fact, Bert and Ernie have been pushed into special segments and the show is mostly run by Elmo and newcomer Abby Cadabby. While this has not been the most favorable of changes for many adults, who wish they could see the show with their kids and relate and chuckle along with their favorite characters, engagement has still been primarily positive through the years. While I personally feel that alienating the adult audience may negatively impact the potential for parents to take time with their kids to watch the show, it is more important that the kids are engaged. Still though, Sesame Street remains at the forefront of children's TV. They continue to provide programming that is inclusive and engaging. Dunkin Donuts Persuasive Letters Dear Dunkin' Donuts' Current Franchisee, I have been a frequent, satisfied customer of your food chain for over fifteen years, and I plan to continue enjoying my breakfast at your locations. The donuts and coffee I purchase at Dunkin' is delicious, and the service is always helpful and welcoming. Considering this, about a year ago I wrote an email to you regarding opening a Dunkin' Donuts in my current hometown of Dalton, Georgia. In my email I explained that not only would this fast–food restaurant attract the college students and coffee lovers in the area, but it would also add an affordable breakfast restaurant to the area along with competition to competitors such as Starbucks and Krispy Kreme. Unfortunately, I waited weeks for an email, with a response, that never came. Even if you had no intentions of opening a Dunkin' Donuts here, an answer and explanation in the form of an email or letter would have been appreciated. Ever since I was a little girl, I have loved the variety of donuts that Dunkin' has to offer. From Boston Kreme to Strawberry Frosted, the variation of these tasty treats never seems to disappoint. Dunkin' Donuts does not just hold significance fulfilling my cravings, but it holds great importance in the memories I have made with my grandparents. So, you may ask, "Why Dunkin'?" I choose this company because it is not just a restaurant. It is an opportunity: an opportunity to create memories, an opportunity to change lives, and an opportunity to help the company ... Lawn guru is providing Lawn mowing service during the summer and snow cleaning during winter. It helps the company to balance the business and optimal utilization of resource during idleness of the summer and winter. Partnering with suppliers: The third approach to managing demand recognizes the information distortion caused by ordering goods in batches along a supply chain. Even though a customer may require daily usage of an item, customer probably does not purchase that item daily. Neither do retail stores restock their shelves continuously. By the time a replenishment order reaches distributors, wholesalers, manufacturers, and their suppliers, the demand pattern for a product can appear extremely erratic. To control the situation manufacturers, their suppliers, and customers form partnerships in which demand information is shared and orders are placed in a more continuous fashion. I have pondered about what makes these coffee shops different from one another. During my exploration on Wabash Avenue, I came to the conclusion that location is important regarding customer population in stores. I also realized the importance of customers, customer service, store management, and store atmosphere. Because of my project I got to understand what my topic truly was. I have this knowledge from the photos I discovered at the Harold–Washington Library. One particular photo stuck out to me out of the 6 I observed. The photo was of crowded adults waiting to get into a christmas shop on Wabash. It stuck out to me because it showed how even back then customers still got excited to buy new products. • 29. Analysis Of ' Dunkin Donuts ' The retail environment that I decided to analyze is one that is very familiar to most Americans in today's world: Dunkin Donuts. According to the University of Harvard, 54% of Americans over the age of 18 drink at least one coffee a day, with 65% of it being consumed during breakfast. According to the Dunkin Donuts Press Kit of February 2014, currently the Dunkin Donuts franchise is bought by 11% of Americans on a daily basis and has nearly 11,000 stores in 33 countries. But of all of those stores, I chose one in the quiet suburban town of Chester, New Jersey. Though not a very large town, Chester is built up with many restaurants and shops for tourists and locals alike to come and spend their time and money. The traffic flow to this specific store is fairly unique, in the sense that it is located right off of the major highway in Route 206 south. When I pulled off of Route 206 and into the parking lot, I nearly overshot the entire drive and almost ended up in the shrubbery out by the road because the turn was so sudden and tight. Watching cars enter the parking lot, I realized I was not the only one who was having this issue. Things can get fairly tricky very quickly at this store when you've got cars coming down a major highway going forty five miles per hour and then all of a sudden they slam on their brakes to make the sharp turn into the Dunkin Donuts parking lot. Abstract It was not long ago that there was wide agreement among broadcasters, scholars, educators and parents concerning the ultimate goal of children's television programming: to educate. Today, it would be difficult to find even two people to agree on such terms. Popular opinion would lead us to believe that broadcasters now seek to exploit the youngest members of their audience––turning them into life–long viewers (and consumers). Scholars and educators woefully condemn television for the "dumbing down" of America. Parents, no longer present during all television viewing hours, may not even be aware of what their children are watching. In this method, foreign nations play a larger role in the compilation of footage for the show: some is produced locally, some is from the United States. As of 1988, there were 15 co–productions worldwide, and that number has remained quite constant since that time.3 The U.S. version uses little, if any, foreign material.4 CTW remains a not–for–profit U.S. corporation with a 1994 operations reserve fund of $34 million and an endowment of $71 million.5. • 45. Analysis Of The Novel ' Mister Pip ' In my opinion a novel has to capture the reader's attention in the first two pages and hold that same attention throughout the whole journey for it to be a novel that is worthwhile reading. Lloyd Jones' literary style throughout the novel Mister Pip is captivating, compelling, grotesque and enlightening all at once. Through the various personalities and explorations of each character and through back stories that unfold through flashbacks and story telling, Lloyd Jones lures the reader into the story. • 49. Analysis Of Tom Jones 's ' Mister Pip ' Essay The Development of Tension In Mister Pip, Lloyd Jones explores the ability of the creative space of literature to mediate transformations of culture and identity. Set during the Bougainville civil war in the early 1990s, the island's sole white inhabitant, Mr Watts reopens a dilapidated schoolhouse and reads Great Expectations to the village children. Written in the first person retrospective narrative style, we witness how the villagers are caught in the military conflict just as inexorably as Matilda is caught between the tension between her incongruous teacher, Mr Watts, and her fiercely religious mother, Dolores. They battle for the control over the mind and soul of Matilda, developing the theme of ignorance versus education. The consequent tension between Dolores and Matilda illustrates the theme of adolescence, of challenging parental beliefs and affirming one's values. With all foreign contact withdrawn from the besieged Bougainville, Matilda becomes infatuated with the world of Great Expectations, whose cultural unfamiliarity is exemplified through the animosity Dolores bears toward Mr Watts. Mr Watts brings new, Western ideas to the classroom and encourages the use of creativity and imagination to seek escapism and exposure through literature, "giving us all another room to lounge around in" – the room of the mind. Matilda becomes riveted by the adventures of Pip in Victorian England London, a city whose contours soon become more real than her own landscape. "I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

One of the ways that youths in inner cities find stability in their unsafe neighborhoods is by following the code of the street and "campaigning for respect on the street– asserting their masculinity, confidence, and social status through posturing and fighting." One does not see something as virtuous as Sesame Street to be a wide– spreading contagion. Yet, Sesame Street provoked a social epidemic as one of the most influential children 's television programs of its time. Malcolm Gladwell has studied the effects of Sesame Street on the education of young children in his novel, The Tipping Point. He has three overall generalizations of all epidemics, including the Law of the Few, the Stickiness Factor, and the Power of Context. I will apply these generalizations to his example of Sesame Street to support Gladwell's argument. In addition, I will support his argument using the philosophical theories of Alasdair McIntyre and Theodore M. Porter. Overall, Gladwell poses a convincing argument that the success of Sesame Street is due to the complete combination of his three generalizations. The beginning of Sesame Street as an epidemic began with the very start of the television program. Television producer, Joan Ganz Cooney embarked on a mission to create a children's learning epidemic (Gladwell 89). Many epidemics that are covered in Gladwell's novel are unintentional. The producers of Sesame Street, however, purposefully researched the effect of their show to ensure that it was impactful. • 55. Mister Pip Analysis Non–fiction is a writing form that can give readers an insight into understanding events that may have occurred in a different time or place to that of their own. Mister Pip is a novel written by New Zealand author, Lloyd Jones and based on true events. It takes place on the island of Bougainville during a time where civil war, sparked by a blockade enforced by Papua New Guinea, peaked brutality as the locals attempted to protect their land against Australian mines. The novel is conveyed through the innocent 15–year–old eyes of Matilda, a local girl, featuring the mysterious character, Mr. Watts; the last white man on the island. The wartime setting of Bougainville was central to understanding the writer's purpose of conveying the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The wartime setting of Bougainville was central to the writer's purpose, once again, when Grace passed away. The village mourns the loss and buries her body as a community. Matilda states the process of her burial as "it was the world getting on with its business". The way that the term 'world' is used portrays that this is the extent of their world. They are trapped. Then the term 'business' is used, a term with connotations of formality, clinicalness, and removal. This term may have been used to show that deaths are so frequent in the setting that it has become normality. This sentence in the setting may have therefore been used by Jones to portray how devastating the war is and to help us to understand his purpose in showing the brutality and loss in the written text. In relation to the wider world, during World War One and Two, soldier and civilian deaths skyrocketed. At first each individual was mourned and paid with honour but as time went on each death just became another statistic as with the setting witnessed in 'Mister Pip'. Another time that the wartime setting of Bougainville was central to the writer's purpose was when the Redskins arrived in the village for the last time in the novel. They arrived again in search of Pip, a character that they did not know to of been a character in the novel 'Great Expectations' by Charles Dickens. He did not exist. The commander states "I am finished with being lied to". The term 'finished' has ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 59. Essay on The Relationship Change Between Pip and Joe Gargery How has the relationship changed between Pip and Joe Gargery? The relationship between Pip and Joe changes dramatically. As Pip gets older and has turned into a gentleman, Joe has stayed the same, with his clumsy actions and lack of manners. This creates a divide between what used to be a loving relationship. When Pip was a small boy, he felt close to Joe, as Joe was like a father figure and Pip looked up to him. This meant that Joe and Pip had a very strong bond and they were very close. They also shared similarities, as they both had to face being beaten with the 'tickler' by Mrs Joe Gargery. This brought them closer together. It also shows that there are no complications in their relationship and they find it easy to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There is a lot of love when Joe says 'Ever the best of friends; aint us Pip?'. Pip agrees with this by hugging Joe and crying. This shows how Pip expresses his emotions towards Joe, and they obviously have a close relationship. Joe and Pip's relationship is brought closer when Mrs Joe Gargery doesn't want Joe to learn, 'no scholars'. So when Pip wants to teach Joe without her finding out, it is like a special secret, that only Pip and Joe know about. He has never parted from Joe before and it is like the strong bond between them suddenly starting to weaken. As Pip grows older, becoming more of a gentleman, he grows further and further appart from Joe. This becomes a problem, as they now feel awkward to be in each other's presence. Joe feels that he has to now ask for permission to see Pip. In the letter from Pip to Joe it says 'Dear Mr Pip'. This shows that Joe isn't as close to Pip as he used to be, as he now calls him Mr Pip, which is more formal. Joe also calls himself an 'affectionate servant'. This

Mister Pip written by Lloyd Jones is a novel recounted by the protagonist Matilda. Set in 1990's Bougainville, we see Matilda begin to question her Mother's traditional idea's about life as a civil war rages between the rebels and the Redskins in her homeland. Mr. Watts or "Pop eye" is given the role teaching the village children, being the only educated, and consequentially, white man left on the island. He begins reading Great Expectations to the children and Matilda finds herself becoming entranced in white civilisation. She continues to try and "save" her daughter, the power of unconditional love overcoming their even more obviously marked differences. Dolores then tries to impose her faith on Matilda in hope she will begin to value God over Great Expectations to lead her away from the white world. Dolores comes unannounced to Matilda's class and tries to educate the children on the only thing she knows well: the importance of faith "she didn't know anything outside what she knew from the bible" but as Mr. Watts gets further through the novel Pip becomes yet even more important to Matilda. Dolores never stops in trying to steer Matilda away from the white world. The world she knows barely anything about, the world she thinks is evil. Despite their ever–increasing differences Dolores will always continue to protect Matilda from what she believes is bad. We see the power of unconditional love shown again through Matilda and Dolores's contrast when Matilda discovers Great Expectations to have been stolen by her Mother. When Dolores hides Great Expectations much strife is caused. The Red Skins visit Matilda's island, threatening to burn all of their possessions unless they give up "Pip" who is only a character from a book and cannot be given up. Because the book is not where it is supposed to be "Pip" cannot be explained. The redskins burn the whole villages' possessions because Dolores fails to come forward and admit to what she had done in order to retrieve ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 66. The Role Of Children In Goodnight Mister Tom, By Michelle... Children look up to parents as their role models and influencers, however sometimes they do not fulfill these roles. Goodnight Mister Tom is a novel set in England in 1939 at the start of World War 2. The author, Michelle Magorian, tells a story through this world event about a young child who is evacuated to the country at the anticipation of the war. The child, William Beech, is sent away by his abusive mother in London to the small country town of Little Weirwold to live with a stranger, Tom Oakley. This is explored through the characteristics of Mrs Beech and Mr Tom, how they are compared and contrasted and the effects of their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The baby was described as 'smelly' and she had tape on her mouth to stop her from 'trying to get attention' as Mrs Beech claimed that the baby also needed to learn discipline. She also has a warped view of Will and the kind of person he is, shown when he brings home gifts from Little Weirwold and she accuses him of begging for it or stealing it. She also accuses Will of being 'full of sin' although it is obvious that he is polite and kind to others. When Will came back from the country healthier and more confident than she remembered, she believed that she had to 'silence him into obedience' and was scared that he had 'threatened her authority'. We can see that she is very insecure about her role in society and as a mother. Mrs Beech is a bad parent is clearly unfit for bringing up children. Tom Oakley is a kind man who cares for and loves Will and is a positive role model for him. He is 'a healthy, strong old man' who lives in the country town of Little Weirwold. The description of Tom's physical appearance already tells us that he can take care of himself and is probably more reliable as a parent figure. William Beech ends up being placed in his care when he is evacuated from London. Tom lives in a graveyard near a church, and is only asked to care for Will because of this. It is revealed that Tom lives where he does because his dead wife and child are buried there and he has a hard time letting go of them. Ironically, his child was also called William. Mr Tom ... This journey includes a life or death struggle in the presence of fear in which one opponent emerges the victor or master and one as the loser or slave. The loser must then complete a creative work also while feeling fear before finally becoming a true human being. In Disney's Pinocchio, the titular character undergoes the epitome of a Hegelian journey. Pinocchio is reduced to a mere object and, thus, beginning his Hegelian struggle to prove his humanity. The second stage of the path to Hegelian self–awareness is a creative work. The loser must use creativity while still feeling extreme fear in order to prove to himself that he is a human being capable of thought and action. Toward the end of the movie, Geppetto goes out searching for Pinocchio and ends up swallowed by a huge and horrifying whale named Monstro. Upon learning this, Pinocchio launches a rescue mission for his father. He reaches the edge of the sea and, realizing he needs to sink to the bottom of the ocean, thinks up the idea to tie a rock to himself. This allows him to drop to the ocean floor where he may then continue his search for Monstro. Pinocchio asks many fish where he might find the whale only to receive a terrified school of fish swimming away from him.
