The purpose of this paper is to construct an essay and define the sociological perspective. To be able
to explain how my knowledge of the Sociological Perspective has helped me to understand the
social world on both a macro and micro level. This essay will include the definition, discussion and
application of specific sociological terms, concepts and theories.
The study of sociology brings people to view topics in a unique way than others. The way we see

unified whole. Therefore, everything is perceived in a "big picture" from a macro point of view on
life in our society. Manifest functions are the obvious, intended functions of a social structure, while
latent functions are the less obvious, perhaps unintended functions.
Conflict theory is the second major school of thought in sociology. It is a macro–level type of
approach to understand social interactions in social life, just like functionalism. A difference in
conflict theory is that our society is viewed as always being in a constant struggle, unlike
functionalism which theorizes that our society is stable. Conflict theory is a paradigm that sees
social conflict as the basis of society and social change, and emphasizes a materialist view of
society, a critical view of the status quo, and a dynamic model of historical change. Some
sociologists may believe that if these tensions, stresses, and struggles never existed in our society
people may be more driven to achieve greatness in education, or simply more motivated to set

Sociological theorists have always disagreed in method, hence the three paradigms that compose the
sociological theory as a whole. But it's the fact that none of them have the one defined answer to
society's quirky nature. Conflict theory, symbolic interactionism, and functionalism must coexist in
order to provide the best encompassing view of societal anomalies. Specifically looking at crime
rates as an example, one would take each theory into consideration as to demonstrate their
contribution to the crime rate. In the following paragraphs I'll be referencing Karl Marx (conflict
theorist), Lewis Coser (functionalist), and Charles Horton Cooley (symbolic interactionist). Marx's
theory of Alienated Labor describes two dominant groups within a capitalist structure such as the
United States. The Bourgeoisie and the Proletariat subcategories are those groups, the Bourgeoisie
being the rich and powerful and the Proletariat being the poor and weak. The Bourgeoisie maintains
a chokehold on the Proletariats by keeping them in a vicious cycle of creating the products that they
will never be able to obtain. Thus creating a commodity fetishism that desynchronizes the

that the Proletariats are bound to realize that they are essentially under the mind control of the

After reading these sections, I had to re–read how to transition into my source, because I sometimes
through them in there without context. I should've read this before I turned in my midterm paper for
my other class, because I got docked for throwing in a quote. But, as I am writing my final research
paper, I am prepared. Also, a nice refresher was the common logic section, because as I invest
deeper into my discipline, I am having trouble by assuming certain sociological theory is common
sense, but it's not the case. Now I know common knowledge only pertains facts, historical events

been a source of reading entertainment for many people. Throughout the years magazines slowly but
surely also began influencing their reader's lives. Readers of all ages, nationally and gender were
now looking though magazines for answer on life, fashion, love and even sex. Advertising
companies soon began to notice the phenomenon that was happening and began incorporating their

In order to know how influential magazines are, we must first ask why people read magazines.
Many people purchase magazines to learn something or they enjoy keeping up with current
products, events and celebrities. So basically it doesn't matter if you're looking for fitness tips or
beauty tricks, the readers will in one way or another be influenced by the advertisements and
messages in the magazines. The type of influence may vary from positive to negative. Advertising,
particularly for fashion and cosmetics, has a powerful effect on how the reader's views themselves.
Often when you ask someone what is the definition of beauty they will show you a picture of a
model or celebrity. These magazines gives the reader often very unrealistic ideation. Often the
models used for ads are extremely thin and dramatically photoshopped to look as flawless as
possible. Young women rely heavily on them for information on beauty, love and fashion, valuing
their advice nearly as highly as that of their peers. This leads to an unrealistic ideation for many
readers to follow. Men's magazine in my opinion doesn't have enough character. The magazines
consisted of fitness tips, samples of cologne and clothing. Nowhere did I observe dialog for self–
expression. This leads to my main issue with magazines which is own as gender socialization.

Economy and State: A Sociological Perspective, written by Nina Bandelj and Elizabeth Sowers,
explains the economic foundation of the state by discussing the governance of property and money,
in correlation to labor and firms, ending in economic development and
internationalization/globalization. Bandelj and Sowers', target audiences for this book seemed to be
intended for those individuals wanting to learn the basics of economics from an economic sociology
perspective allowing readers to broaden their minds, while drawing comparisons from the political
economy and economic sociology. This book was written with clear language for the audience to
understand and comprehend the large amount of traditional economic theory information within its
condensed size, as well as introducing a sense of economic sociology in to the mix. Both Bandelj
and Sowers separate their book into eight chapters: ranging from property and money, labor and
firms, development and the international global economy, before its conclusion. Authors Nina
Bandelj and Elizabeth Sowers, provide a wonderful analysis between economy and sociology by
breaking down the study of economics including the production, distribution, consumption, and
exchange of goods and services and its direct correlation to social networks, cultural reality so to

Currently, the rates of homelessness in America continue to drastically increase. The U.S.
Department of Housing and Urban Development (2012) depicted how many people are homeless in
a single night in America. The findings revealed that there were approximately 633,782 people who
are homeless in America or 20 out of every 10,000. Approximately 394,379 are single individuals
and 239,403 are people in families with 77,157 homeless families in a single night, and
approximately 162, 246 are children. Veterans are more likely to be homeless than those who are
non–veterans, approximately 29 out of every 10,000 veterans are homeless. Unfortunately, 38
percent of those who are homeless are unsheltered, either living on the streets or in places that are
not suitable for human inhabitation. Most states account of for less than 1% of homeless population,
whereas Texas contains approximately 5.4% of America's homeless population. In San Antonio,
there are approximately 2,981 people who are homeless each day, and 1,243 are unsheltered.
Through a sociological perspective, the social problems of homelessness can be analyzed through
the concept of sociological imagination, the comparison of the person–blame approach and the
system–blame approach, and through the analysis of one's own community's effort in helping those

This theory is applicable to both parties in this case but more so to the individuals within the police
department. The symbolic interactionist perspective emphasizes the development of self–concept
based on how those around us interact with, and label us. In this instance, the interaction between

This can also be thought of as focusing on the micro level of society. George H. Mead and Max
Weber are the two figures who truly brought this perspective into the light. Unlike other sociologists
who based their perspectives off of how society views things, they examined how individuals view

Coming from AJP, I needed to cross Fifth Avenue to start my walk, and like what I had to do every
day when I had class at that building, I found myself once again waiting for the walk sign to appear
across the street. This Sociological Perspective of seeing society in our everyday lives showed how
the smallest personal choices, even the action of walking, is affected and shaped by society and how
it functions. As I was walking through Fifth Avenue, I noticed that there were buildings at every
corner of this long street. Students, some wearing Carlow gear while others wore Pitt gear,

constant use of ecstasy and meth, she began using it as well. After getting high on drugs one night at

Published in a women's Studies Journal in December of 2015, Tracy Bowell explains this issue by
bringing to light the lack of women in almost every aspect of philosophy describing, ".. three
connected, but different problems: the absence of women from the discipline of philosophy [such

The sociological perspective is the comprehension of human conduct by placing it within its broader
social contexts (pg. 3). This perspective is developed by using three core sociological perspectives
that were developed over time. Although, these perspectives all provide a unique vantage point of

has to offer. Sociology helps us to look objectively at our society and other society's, as well as to
better understand individual interactions between other people. When first deciding to immerse

with to better his or her understanding of general sociology and to allow the learning process to

able to read, understand, and dissect real issues and from it, was able to understand what tools
