What is Sociology?

Introduction
Sociology is described by Layder (2006, p.1) as being "How the encounters of everyday life and
individual behaviour influence, and are influenced by, the wider social environment in which we live"
Bauman & May (2001. p.1) describe a visual image of the output of sociology, as being a "collection
of books in a library". The discussion within this collection broadly follows main concepts and
perspectives, with many authors, but also of key peer tested Authors.
I will initially outline the main concepts and main perspectives from a selection of these authors,
and aim to conclude, that is is the "sociological thinking" gained from "unpacking" this knowledge,

perspective
The conflict perspective (Karl Marx. and latterly Wright–mills) views society as composed of
different groups and interests, competing for power and resources. For example, feminist theory
argues that we live in a patriarchal society that feminism "demands that existing economic, political,
and social structures be changed" (Weir and Faulkner 2004, p.xii).
Symbolic Interactionist Perspective
Reflecting the micro–sociological perspective, Symbolic interactionism emphasizes that "human
behaviour is influenced by definitions and meanings that are created and maintained through
symbolic interaction with others". Goffman (1959 p.26) states""I assume that when an individual
appears before others he will have motives for trying to control the impression they receive of the
situation"
Positivism
Augustus Comte is regarded as the founder of this, however it is described as "a simple adherence
to the traditions of all great scientific minds" Mill (2005 chptr 1) and a "doctrine that science
(including the social sciences) can deal only with observable things and that phenomena, in any
form, have to be studied in a scientific manner. It does not take account of the individual's

What is Sociology? After reviewing the article titles given for this first assignment, I believe they
indicate that Sociology, generally speaking, is not only a study of diversity or commonality in traits
among people; it is also a science about factors in a person's life and how these factors culminate

How has Sociology changed? According to the Merriam–Webster Online Dictionary (2010),
Sociology is referred to as ".the systematic study of the development, structure, interaction, and
collective behavior of organized groups of human beings" (para. 1); however, the transformable
qualities of this science are not represented by this definition, as they should be. To best understand
these changes, we must first consider changes within people as study objects; for as previously
stated, Sociology changes in ways which are commensurate to changes in the world around it.
For example, during the 1970's, single parent households did exist, but these arrangements were
considered to be the exception, not the rule. In contrast, today's family structures are as diverse as
the people within them. Given that it has become routine for some parents to live separately, and
couples of same sex marriages are now common place, unique areas of consideration have opened up
and are in need of further scrutiny. Through updated theories and advanced equipment, inventive
techniques have been applied to study people adjoined to the modernized world they live in. Also,
social sciences have fundamentally altered their beliefs of acceptability and acknowledged

According to Durkheim, Social fact or social phenomenon are the main subject matter of
sociology. He said in one of his pieces that social fact must be studied distinct from the biological
and psychological phenomenon. Social order is the trend of behavior being used to exercise power
over another person. It has become rules and regulations that have been set up by some authorities
to be obeyed by another group of people who are being undermined in a society, it is a situation that
oppressed people and limits them from their liberties. When people go through these situations they
cannot function the way they are supposed to function because they are limited by their freedom.
These social orders are not only laws but rather certain norms created by the authority to put a whole
race into a situation where they are very far from freedom of speech, movement, and knowledge.
African Americans are an example of a race that has been through discrimination at workplaces,
schools, community etc. They are one race which has been a label or put in a class where the
situation will never permit you to climb the ladder of success. Although you might have all the
certification, qualification, the best schools, etc. but the fact that you came from the poor class or
the lower class, it becomes very difficult for the Caucasian people to give you the opportunity you

One central and important study of sociology is the study of everyday social life. Everyday life and
sociology are definitely two distinct terms and situations, but they hold a close relationship. While
sociology studies human interaction, everyday life consists of everyday human interaction.
Everyday life is filled by human beings interacting with one another, institutions, ideas, and emotions.
Sociology studies the interactions with all of these and shows how mere interaction resulted in

The Structural–Functional theory argues that in order for race and ethnic relations to be functional
and contribute to the conduct and stability of society, racial and ethnic minorities must assimilate
into that society. Assimilation is a process by which minorities gradually adopt patterns of a
dominant culture.
It is believed that deviance encourages social change. A good example of this would be how race
and ethnicity are strongly linked to crime rates. The amount of African Americans that were
involved in crimes was a higher proportion than any other race. African Americans makes up 13
percent of the population but were accounted for 28.9 percent of the arrest. There are several
reasons why arrest for African American could be this high but the main cause would probably be
because of social standing.
Some disadvantages to the African American population are that white people have an overall
higher occupational standing and they also receive schooling beyond high school. Many people
of this race are brought into single parent homes which lead to a huge gap in wealth and these
children receive less supervision which puts them in a greater risk of living in poverty. Over 40
percent of African American children grow up in poor families leaving the high crime rates to not
be a surprise. Prejudice is also another factor to the high crime rates because white police tend to
arrest black people

The orientation is the introduction and it equipped me the resources that are valuable to me. In turn,
Academic one and two taught me about student benefits and responsibilities, Professional

The introduction of Sociology was another opportunity to rely on positivism, which is to rely on the
philosophy of science by observation and examination of the effects of groups and individuals,
cultural phenomena and human interactions. Another important advantage was learning about "The
Sociological Imagination written by C. Wright Mills" because it allowed me to take the larger social
issues and personal experiences and make a connection between the both.
Upon successful completion of my major, I am working towards being promoted in retail
management. I am already in a leadership position. Some of my key roles are to also identify and
develop potential future leaders. With my sociology major, helped me to be a good mentor to
others at work and in my personal life too. I learned a lot about the paper we had to write on
Nature or nurture and that is one of my takeaway from the sociology program because it taught me
that ambition and personality are important combinations of skills that are rare and to exhibit being
a true leader that appreciate and recognize employees and others is one of the best reward ever!

Sociology is the study of groups of people and how society interacts with them. There are many
people out there that have done research or contributed in some way to sociology. Not just on
people, but things like religions, countries, genders, race, and many more. Many things play in
the role to form us and our society. Here in America, we have Trump as our president and we eat
burgers and french fries, but over in japan they grow lots of their own food and eat it like potatoes
with vegetables and chicken. Different things happen around the world and we just can't seem to
think there is other things out there than what we just do or what we call ourselves and so forth.
We don't think about how our society affects us and how we affect society. Society can affect us
in a positive way or even a negative way. A positive way society can influence us is if the
president said all schools in the United States have to have extra curricular activities and the
government will fund it. This could be great for a poor boy in San Joaquin, California who really
wanted to be on the track and field team, but his school did not have it because they couldn't
afford it. This would have kept him out of trouble in the past, but when it finally was available by
the government, he joined and it kept him out of trouble and he worked much harder in school. A
negative way society can impact us is Obama's health care act. Now that they are trying to get rid of
it, many people will have to go without

Sociology is a field which developed over a millennia ago, but it was not until the nineteenth
century that it came into the fore as a bona fide social science, in need of its own classification apart
from other social sciences. Sociology, 'the study of the process of companionship';(pg.396,
Ambercrombie,Hill,Turner), is a discipline, which is not exclusively independent in and of its self,
yet borrows from many other disciplines such as: history, geography, and anthropology.

A powerful group is usually able to coerce or manipulate subordinate classes (through force, threat of
force, withholding of jobs, or other means) because of the dominate group's influence over basic
institutions in the society ( such as the economy, government, courts, and police)(pg.88, Kerbo).';
The critical–conflict theorist, I feel is the most plausible is Karl Marx and his Marxian view of social
stratification and inequality. Marx viewed capitalism as a mode of production that results in the
exploitation and virtual enslavement of the wage laborer by the owner of capital. 'Marx recognized
various modes of production and considered each to be associated with a particular social structure
(pg. 348, Marx).'; Capitalism as a mode of production consisted of two factors, the means and modes
of production. The means of production incorporate ' the material, instrument, and product of
labour,'; and these determine the relations of production which are the 'relative position[s] of these
individual groups'; to one another (pg.161, Marx). Capitalism, Marx believed, was fueled by greed
for increased wealth at the expense of laborers and to the ultimate destruction of the entire system.
Marx said that capitalism would, 'create bourgeois society (pg.363, Marx).'; The combination of the

Sociological Inquiry Essay
The sociological inquiry is the methodical analysis of the inspirations and behaviour of
individuals within a group. It is the study of the social world as a whole and focusing on how
elements such as the family, religion, school, community and government effect it. Sociological
inquires most standard goal is to simply obtain a more clear understanding of the observable social
world that we live in. In this essay I will be looking into the sociological theories of Marx, Weber
and Durkheim, and recognising if their approaches are still relevant today.

Marx theories were in the time of the industrial revolution, where dramatic changes were
happening such as the government passing enclosure acts in 1700's and 1800's, meaning that
ordinary people no longer had the rights to live on some lands as the rich could now afford to
buy them. This forced a growth in population in cities and towns and resulted in poorer families
not being able to grow their own food but wold now must purchase it. Forcing men to go out and
look for work. Few people owned factories, shops and businesses, and the employees would have
no choice but to work very hard for minimal pay, something Marx was very much against. He
believed that the industrial revolution promoted capitalist's way of thinking and was a good way of
keeping the rich rich, and the poor poor. Marx did also believe that one day the proletariat would
rise and realise that they had the power to change this and overthrow those who treated them
unfairly. Vladimer Lenin in The three sources and three component parts ofMarxism (1913) also
believed this was a possibility and hoped for this outcome. Engels in The origins of the family,
private property and the state (1884), criticized Marx and said that the shift to private ownership
had a huge effect on the status of the woman. Something Marx had not acknowledged. he states
that because of the separation in class, women were now more controlled by men of the ruling
class, giving a divide and gender oppression between the sexes as well as between the bourgeoisie
and the proletariat. The men would be paid to go out to work but yet the women had to do
domestic labour that was unpaid. The working man is also not treated fairly as his whole value is

Reflection In Sociology
After taking a Sociology class this semester, I learned a lot of about the different topics and
concepts in this course and how they are related to our society, which has changed my perspective
as well as how I view and see the meaning of my surroundings. I would also think about what would
be going on inside a specific person's mind and how he or she was feeling. After learning about
different concepts in Sociology and watching the videos presented in class, it became easier to just
stop and think about a person, wonder who that person was, and be curious about that person's life

It is crazy to hear that the top richest people in this world have the same wealth as the poorest 3
billion people in this world. Even though rich countries are giving aid to poor countries, the huge
gap difference between their wealth is due to large corporations form rich countries taking more
money from poor countries, and this really explains a lot why poor country never have the chance to
actually thrive. The thought that poor people should be able to come up from where they came
from, which is a thought in many people's minds, especially those who have money, isn't all that
simple.
The activity we had to do for homework with the Sorting People stood out to me as well and
made me realize that classifying and judging people based on how they look and guess what their
races and ethnicities are solely by appearance, is not the right way to categorize people. I learned
that the majority of my guesses were wrong, and after reading about the people's mini bios, I then
realized that people's races and ethnicities are not determined by their physical looks. Appearance
doesn't always tell you about someone's ancestry or self–identities of themselves. "Race" cannot tell
where someone came from, what they are good at, or even how their personalities and behaviors are
like.
It was also very interesting to learn about different cultures, especially during the movies we watched
in class about adoption. It shows how culture along with the beliefs,

No matter where you're at sociology influences your life and the way you think, the things you
do,and the way you see things such as society as a whole.You may not think so but sociology but it
does in several different ways such as your culture, your education, and your childhood. Culture is a
huge part on how you see the world and other people. For instance my parents and family raised me
to be respectful. I was disciplined and had strict parents for the most part. If my parents didn't
raise me this way no one knows where I would be in life. The American culture is different from
many other cultures, and how you were raised is different as well. Charles Darwin (page 75) led
people to think that certain human activity was instinctive or natural, such as women being
naturally emotional and men are naturally rational. Today we still think about and wonder about
what Darwin had done and we still do think certain cultures ways of doing things are weird and
abnormal but,if we were raised that way we would think it was normal and the others are weird.
For instance here in Northern Michigan along with other parts of the United States we think
hunting is normal and a cheap way to provide food. I've always hunted or went with my father.
But people in say Los Angeles California think it's cruel and not right. Everything you do is
reflected not only on your culture but also how you were raised to see examine the culture. Have
you wondered if your source of education could impact your life? Education is an important thing as
we all know, but does where you go to school and how you are taught affect how you see society as
a whole? The answer is yes, in fact school enlarges a kids social world. I have always been in public
school which some people view it as bad and that private schools are better and more one on one. My
family went to public school as well. We didn't have a lot of money when I was younger so i
couldn't have gone to private school if I wanted to. My mom did not finish high school although my
