3. Introduction The Magalhães Classmate PC is a result from a protocol between the Portuguese government and Intel. It is produced in a Portuguese technology company (JP Sá Couto) that customize the product and services based on Intel technology. The name is a tribute to the Portuguese navigator Fernão de Magalhães (Ferdinand Magellan).
4. Magalhães history Fernão de Magalhães was born circa 1480 at Ponte da Barca, in the Portuguese province of Minho. He became the first person to lead an expedition across the Pacific Ocean as an attempt to circumnavigate the Earth. Although he did not complete the entire voyage (he was killed during the Battle of Mactan in the Philippines), Magalhães had earlier traveled eastward to the Spice Islands, so he became one of the first individuals to cross all of the meridians of the Globe.
5. The Project goal The project goal is to democratize access to information technology in Portugal, providing 500.000 new computers to the children of the 1st to 4th year of primary education for 50€ (free or at 20€ for students on social aid). Driving costs down is a goal, so that students, teachers and parents can integrate technology into their lives. The Magalhães classmate PCs, are rugged, affordable, child-friendly notebooks.
6. birthday On the 31st of July 2008, Intel, JP Sá Couto (the producer of the Tsunami Portuguese computers) and the Portuguese Government announced the production of the "Magalhães" a Classmate-based computer that will be produced in Portugal (by JP Sá Couto) and distributed to Portuguese children in primary education, as well as being exported to other countries.
8. Operating System Windows Xp Normal and Magic Desktop Magic Desktop is a software for kids between ages 2 and 10 that provides a safe way to share computers with children. It functions as an operating system on Windows-based PCs that is both child-proof and child-friendly.
