Magickey Assistive Technologies for Quadriplegic Persons - 2012.02.13

  1. 1. THE MAGICKEY PROJECT MAGICEYE / MAGICKEYBOARD SETTING PEOPLE FREE A Microsoft Windows-based INFORMATION and COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY (ICT) ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY (AT) FOR PERSONS WITH IMPAIRED ARM / HAND MOVEMENT: QUADRIPLEGICS, TRAUMA & STROKE VICTIMS, ALS, PALSY, ETC.Enables independent use of an ordinary personal computer to work, surf the internet, chat, write letters, make video calls, draw, paint, etc. Patrick Milroy – patrick.milroy@hotmail.com – Tel.: +1 780 800 6149
  2. 2. MagicEye: A digital input device (Assistive Technology) that is simply sophisticated. PMM
  3. 3. MagicEye: Exceedingly simple to install—literally—in seconds, on any computer running Microsoft Windows operating system.. PMM
  4. 4. MagicEye: A unique piece of hardware consisting of a high-tech camera, two infra-red lamps, USB connections, and state-of-the art software developed over a decade. PMM
  5. 5. MagicEye: A high-tech camera, detects the infra-red light from the two lamps, focuses on the pupils (+), and the state-of-the art software detects the eye movement. PMM
  6. 6. MagicEye: The pointer / cursor follows the movement of the eyes (+), mimicking theuse of the computer mouse, allowing disabled persons to use computer technology. PMM
  7. 7. MagicEye: The user selects and fixes scroll-lock, to enable smooth reading of documents and web-sites. PMM
  8. 8. MagicEye & MagicKey: The user directs the pointer over the virtual keyboard, selecting letters and options, to type documents, chat, use Skype, surf the internet, etc. PMM
  9. 9. MagicEye & MagicKey: A great variety of virtual keyboards exists, simpler keyboardsfor beginners, who quickly advance to customising a keyboard just for themselves. PMM
  10. 10. MagicEye & MagicKey: The customization of the keyboard is simple, and easy. PMM
  11. 11. MagicEye & MagicKey: In addition to the customisable keyboards, a vast (installed) dictionary grows with use (user input), memorizing each new word and phrase.Subsequent writing is faster and more efficient with rapid word prediction (above). PMM
  12. 12. MagicEye & MagicKey: An entertaining game has been created to assist beginners in training the eye and mind to co-ordinate the movement of the pointer / cursor. PMM
  13. 13. MagicEye & MagicKey: The beginner trains by moving the red circle around the frog, the frog moves to another location, where user has to again chase the frog. PMM
  14. 14. MagicEye & MagicKey: Many tools exist to assist in the configuration and customization of the software to each user’s needs and condition. PMM
  15. 15. MagicEye & MagicKey: Many tools exist to assist in the configuration and customization of the software to each user’s needs and condition. PMM
  16. 16. MagicEye & MagicKey: Many tools exist to assist in the configuration and customization of the software to each user’s needs and condition. PMM
  17. 17. MagicEye & MagicKey: Many tools exist to assist in the configuration and customization of the software to each user’s needs and condition. PMM
  18. 18. View of MagicEye and MagicKey icons , and other programs on Microsoft WindowsDesktop. All are accessible via MagicEye & MagicKey, in a very short training period. PMM
  19. 19. MAGICEYE / MAGICKEY A REVOLUTION IN COMPUTER TECHNOLOGYMagicEye is an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) system that allowspeople who—due to trauma or disease—have difficult, limited, or no use of their arms,to type or control the mouse of their personal computer. MagicEye can easily beconfigured for a great variety of users. MAGICEYE / MAGICKEY CHARACTERISTICS Easily installed by non-technical people; Highly portable (lightweight and compact); Has a high degree of precision, even at high screen resolutions; Can be configured manually, semi-automatically, or automatically; Allows user to wear eyeglasses achieving same level of efficiency as non-wearers; Can be used for extended periods without tiring the eyes; Has no great learning curve, as the basics are mastered in minutes; Has been shown more precise than competing ocular-input equipment; Is infinitely better than other methods of digital input (breath, tongue, etc.); Requires no attendant, allowing the user great independence; Sells for less than larger, heavier, less-convenient competitor’s equipment; Does not require numerous costly, proprietary accessories; Has a 2-year, no-charge, free-replacement “hardware” guarantee; Software is constantly evaluated, improved and offered via free download; Developed by the research arm of a major European educational institution. 20. 20. The following text is an extract from: ICTs IN EDUCATION FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES “Review of innovative practice” sponsored and produced by:Developing technologies to support people with severe physical limitations in PortugalThe Instituto Politécnico da Guarda, located in Guarda, Portugal and the FundaçãoPortugal Telecom have worked together since 2005 in a project named MagicKey(www.magickey.ipg.pt) to develop customised technology solutions for citizens withseverely restricted physical mobility. PMM
  21. 21. ICT solutions have been developed so that by just moving their eyes, users can accessand completely control their computer. The PTMagicEye solution enables fullcomputer control only through eye gaze. This solution is aimed to help people who arecompletely immobilised, or people who suffer from involuntary head movements(such as Cerebral Palsy) but still have eye gaze direction control. The PTMagicKeyboard is a multiple function application. It can be used as a fullyconfigurable virtual keyboard, with a predictive text system that increases up to 5times the writing speed. As a simple example it is possible to produce a keyboard withonly 8 very large buttons, or have more than 100 buttons. It incorporates a voicerecognition system that allows control over the computer by using only voicecommands. It also has the ability to convert text into voice for any application. In conjunction withthe hardware MagicHome, connected to the PC via a USB cable, it is possible tocontrol the home environment in a very simple way, by using infrared commands orradio-frequency commands. Such solutions have significantly increased the quality oflife of its users. In many cases these interfaces are the only way for users tocommunicate with others, and, as we know, communication is the most importantactivity for all people. PMM
  22. 22. These individual solutions are often re-used in other situations of limited physical access tocomputer.. . . the intention is to keep on developing personalised ICT solutions – a new system is nowbeing developed which will allow people who are both deaf and blind to interact with thecomputer. In addition, the developers are also working on an eye-gaze controlledwheelchair; the first prototype has already been tested on a real user.”*Published by the UNESCO Institute for Information Technologies in Education© UNESCO, 2011© European Agency for Development in Special Needs Education, 2011ISBN 978-5-990069-94-7 (Printed)Printed in the Russian FederationA demonstration videos are available at:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTbHspZ8LNI&feature=relatedwww.ipg.ptuser~luis.figueiredoPedrocadeiraHD.wmv PMM
