2. OVERVIEW
DIGITAL ECONOMIC AS A PILLAR OF ECONOMIC RESILIENCY DURING CRISIS
The lesson from the crisis resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic is that digital economy and digitalization can become
one of the pillars of Indonesia's economic resilience. In that scene, startups played an increasingly important role in
digital transformation in Indonesia. They have strategic roles, namely providing solutions for various needs so that our
lives are more comfortable and efficient, opening job markets, and triggering an increase in competitiveness and overall
digital technology capabilities.
BUT THE “HONEYMOON” IS OVER…
Admittedly, startup stories are not always beautiful. Due to the pandemic, soaring global inflation, and geopolitical
uncertainties, investors have begun to hold back their funds. Millions of dollars of funds that used to be available and
obtainable are now scarcer. It may as well lower startups’ valuation when they receive less funding. In such a
circumstance, when “the money to burn” gets slimmer, does the adage “growth at any cost” remain relevant? In the
consumer realm, market validation comes at the moment of the truth: whether product concepts and business models
work, as well as questions on the execution capabilities of the founders and management of startups in realizing a
healthy and sustainable business.
ROLES OF BUMN
It is evident that during the crisis, Indonesia state-owned enterprises (BUMN) have an enormous economic and social
role and are an extraordinary force for the economic sectors. A total of 41 companies with a total asset of IDR 8,400
trillion (2020 data) would certainly be able to make a greater contribution to economic growth if they can synergize in
various businesses, including startups.
IT’S TIME TO STRENGTHEN THE SYNERGY AND COLLABORATION
Now, when we start moving towards recovery, determined by spirit of “Recover together, recover stronger”, what is
needed is strengthening synergy and collaboration across as many stakeholders as possible to optimize the
momentum. This is the perfect moment to strengthen synergy and collaboration between Indonesian startups and BUMN
(SOEs) as the BUMN own end-to-end support from various industries and sectors to help boost the growth of startups.
Through various networks, funds, and partnership opportunities, startups can team up with BUMN while attaining mutual
benefits.
