Dystopian Images In The Dark Knight
The image above, is the official movie poster for the 2008 film "The Dark Knight" released months
in advance to accumulate interest in the live action version of the famous gotham hero Batman. It
was designed by BLT Communications for the 2000s reboot of Batman and is the second film in the
"Dark Knight" trilogy from the Warner Bro. production company. The movie poster depicts a
dystopian society through both imagery and diction. As you can see at the very top of the poster
reads "Welcome to a world without rules", immediately you are able to deduce that the story in
which is to be told might not be a happy one. Furthermore, going back to imagery you see a building
which seems to have been blown up, a dark sky, and a cloaked menacing male

Terry Richardson: A Predator?
These photographs were taken by Terry Richardson, who is featured in the last image wearing a blue
flannel shirt. Terry Richardson is a very well–known portrait and fashion photographer who––as
evidenced by the individuals depicted above––is famous for his portraits of high profile celebrities.
This of course does not detract from Richardson's own fame (or infamy). He has been accused
numerous times of sexual harassment and sexual impropriety during photoshoots, and is a highly
polarizing figure in the media, which often portrays him as a predator. Much of his earlier work is
distinctly pornographic in nature, and has led to much criticism. Despite his personal and
professional history, Richardson's iconic style is sought after by high profile

Analysis Of The Painting ' Cathedral Street '
The painting "Cathedral Street, Woolloomooloo" 56x29 cm was painted by Jeffery Smart. Jeffery
Smart was born in Adelaide South Australia in 1921, he attended the South Australia School of Arts
& Crafts, and he finished school in 1941. He had travelled and studied in Europe from 1948 to 1950.
Smart was involved in many things such as making the Australia radio and television program the "

There's only one figure in this painting and it's a lady sitting on her chair crossed legged at the left
side near the door, she is the main subject matter. There is half painted window on the right side; the
window has red Curtin's. Secondary colours and a bit of primary have been used, the wall of the
house is mixed colours greyish and pinkish, the door is blue, and the boxes one is red and the other
green.
The pathway is dark grey. The lady's clothes are purple; she's also wearing pink shoes. In image B (
'Nighthawks') there are Three customers sitting in a restaurant named Phillie's with one server unlike

the beach in the cafe , the one of them the opposite directions to other two customers while the cafe
worker serves them drinks. The cafe is an organic shaped, buildings are at the opposite side of the
cafe. The name of the cafe is on top of the cafe's building the letters are bold and delicate. There are
chairs around the bench in the cafe. Image A & B have windows, doors in their paintings. Both of

Progression And Effect Of Photographic Abilities
The Progression and effect of Photographic Abilities
The world has been mesmerized by a photograph's ability to show event after it has happened and to
keep that instant alive forever. Photography is a way to capture a moment in time; it has grown and
changed a great deal in the last two–hundred years, the business has affected the economy, and the
uses along with photographers' styles have evolved.
The art of photography seems very simple today, all that is needed is a small device in one's pocket,
but 200 years ago that was not the case. Merriam–Webster defines photography as, "the art or
process of producing images on a sensitive surface by the action of light" (Merriam– Webster 480).
This process took a lot of steps to be discovered. As

Gustre Dore Reflection
On Tuesday, July 11, 2017, I made a trip to the Denver Art Museum. I found a painting by Gustave
Dore, a French painter from Paris, France. The piece was, The Family of Street Acrobats: the
Injured Child painted in 1873. After studying this piece of art in person I noticed many different
elements and characteristics in the actual painting. These are not seen in the photographed image of
the painting that is on the Denver Art Museum Online.
There are many visual elements that are taken away from a painting when it is made available in an
online collections website. When I saw The Family of Street Acrobats: the Injured Child I
immediately went up to it and I could see the texture of the paint, the line and the blobs on the
mothers dress and the long lines of the back ground. The paint was raised, which you cannot observe
in the online picture. The picture online was obviously edited. The color and light are changed
significantly through the editing. It makes the painting look very light and you are able to see more
detail without having to look at it for long. By making the painting brighter it took away from the
original colors of the paint. The father is too bright. This change seems to alter the mood and energy
that the painting is projecting. The size of the painting is misrepresented in the editing of it. When
comparing the two you can see that the online image was cropped. This takes away the space at the
very top of the painting. This is significant because you lose

Analysis Of Retouch Yourself : The Pleasures And Politics...
In chapter nine of Digital snaps: the new face of photography, titled Retouch Yourself: The pleasures
and politics of digital cosmetic surgery, written by Tanya Sheehan, who is an associate professor and
chair of the department of art at Colby College. She discusses the effect of the Photoshop look on
society, and how with technology progressing it has become easier to create and have the perfect
body look you have always wanted.
The questions being raised throughout the chapter is if this new founded process was morally right,
is it right to remove someone's identity and imperfections just so they can fit into this bracket of
being perfect. A debate in 1982 asked commercial operators this: "If a person has an habitual
freckled face, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Is this kind of modification on images something we should be accepting? As this adds the extra
pressure on people in society to look a certain way to not become an outcast.
Digital Snaps: the new face of photography has given me a good introduction and insight to the
negative side of photo manipulation, the way that Sheehan writes is very clear and informative and
this is what has allowed to gain such a wider knowledge around photo manipulation which will now
help me with my further research by giving me a wider range of discussion to explore.
Each Wild Idea; writing, photography, history written by Geoffrey Batchen was published in 2001.
Batchen is a professor of the History of Photography and Contemporary Art at the City University of
New York Graduate Center. Much like Digital Snaps: the new face of photography, Each Wild Idea;
writing, photography, history discusses and explores the history of photography in many areas,
including the many issues that were come across over the years, including photo manipulation.
Throughout Batchen reflects on the history of photography and does this by giving specific
examples of photographs that are relatable to what he is discussing. Batchen also discusses how we
have become accustomed to this modification and whether or not we should be accepting it.
In chapter six of Each Wild Idea; writing, photography,

Comparison Of Holcomb In The Book Capote
The town of Holcomb, Kansas is very stale and damaged throughout the book Capote characterizes
his view of Holcomb by using rhetorical devices such as imagery, diction, repetition,
foreshadowing, and selection of detail to give us a glimpse of his perspective of Holcomb from the
beginning of the book until the end. On page four when Holcomb is introduced Capote uses imagery
to give us a image in our mind of what Holcomb looks like. Throughout part one he gives us an
image that sticks on his view of Holcomb. Holcomb, Kansas stands on the high wheat plains of
Western, Kansas. The town of Holcomb is made up of old buildings and the land there is flat. The
school of Holcomb is the only good establishment in the town. It states that on Page four "
Holcomb, like the rest of Kansas, is dry". When he talks about Holcomb being dry he means that
Holcomb is one of those towns that are in the dark until something serious happens, like the murder
of the four Clutters. The murder of the four Clutters is what got everyone's attention about Holcomb
because like the book stated, "Holcomb was dry". Capote uses a variety of diction to give us his
view of Holcomb from the beginning of the book until the end. He uses different words to give us a
certain view of Holcomb and the diction is what connects us to that view. On page four it states that
" Nearby is another building with an irrelevant sign, this one in flaking gold on a dirty window
Holcomb Bank". Given that the window was dirty it gives you a glance that this town isn't the best
at keeping things clean. However, Capote states that "the depot itself, with its peeling sulphur
colored paint, is equally melancholy". At this point you start to see Capote's view of Holcomb as
being damaged and ran down because the paint is peeling and the window is dirty. Because of the
various diction he uses were able to see those images of Holcomb. Without diction the sentences
would have a plain meaning to them and it makes his view boring. Diction is what gives Capote's
sentences that energy to enhance our view of Holcomb. Capote's way of expressing his glimpse of
Holcomb is through selection of detail. This one is a big one because it makes the sentences pop out.
Each sentence has a

Essay On Anne Frank
The ability to analyze and depict the elements that are portrayed in an image is a skill that is
practical to own. In your educational career, throughout most subjects you are given hundreds of
images to look at. Some are simple and straightforward, and others have a much more deeper
meaning to what is really going on. Having the skill to analyze an image and depict all the elements
gives you a clearer and broader sense of what is going on. For example the image I have chosen to
analyze is of a young jewish girl by the name of Anne Frank who wrote a diary about hiding with
her family in Amsterdam during World War II.
Content is the specific objects or subjects being presented in the picture. The main object is in the
picture is the young girl who is Anne Frank. She appears to be young and hopeful of something as
her eyes are big. It looks like she brown hair and a slightly bigger nose and those characteristics
were deemed bad by the Nazi's. So it wasn't like she could hide her identity unlike others.
The framing of the photo is referring to what is included in the surrounding boundaries of the image.
In this photo, we have Anne Frank in the center of image with a slight grin gazing at something.
Around her, there is this smokey, gray, cloud like surrounding her. Almost like the background of
where she took that photo had no color. This gives the picture a mysterious and dark tone to the
photo.
Composition refers how everything is layout whether there are objects in

Analysis of Architecture in Photography Essay
Analysis of Architecture in Photography
I have decided to look at architecture for my next genre in photography. I have chosen architecture
as it is very different to fashion photography and looks at totally different materials and includes
different characteristics. In the early years of photography, few if any photographers were specialists
in any area other than commercial portraiture, which was the main area in which a living could be
made from the new medium. Early photographers did fairly often photograph buildings, often
working from the window of a convenient room rather than at street level.
Many of the images from this era can truly be described as monumental, giving the subjects ... Show

Even thought the photo only consists of blue, it is made up of lots of different shades of blue.
The lights on the building and around it stand out because they are a bright colour. I think the way
the sea blue colour merges into the deep blue/black colour of the background works really well.
The photograph doesn't really have a story to it, as there isn't much going on, it doesn't have energy
or any movement to it at all. However it could easily be a scene used in a film, such as an
establishing shot. The photo has a certain peaceful feel to it. It is soothing to look at; this is because
it is a calm, quiet setting– you can almost feel your presence there, staring into the beautiful view. I
think the reason that the photo has such a positive, relaxing feel to it is down to the fact that the
composition of the photo reminds you of a deep blue sea or a clear black sky. The photo has strong
verticals and horizontal, which emphasise a static feel and the negative space.
The picture has a large depth of field with the two buildings the centre point of it. Only natural
lighting is used for this photo, therefore getting the exact time of day right would have been
essential.
The photo also has some negative points to it. The angle at which the photograph is taken from
makes the picture looks really flat and plain, For instance if

What is Photography
Photography is seeing what is invisible, capturing the moments that last a lifetime. It can hold all the
mystery of the world in a single picture. It is a visual diary, containing the secrets of the earth. This
great pastime is used all around the world. The good, the bad, and the ugly makes up photography.
Anyone can enjoy photography including you. There are many different parts in photography such
as its history and equipment. There are many types of photography as well. Photography in today's
society is called the killer fine art. Photography was invented around the 1820s. It is now the most
growing hobby in the world. The first camera created is called the Camera Obscura. The Camera
Obscura was used during the 13th – 14th centuries. It was a dark closed box–shaped space with a
hole on one side. The Camera Obsurca got its name from the Latin word "Dark Room". The man
behind the camera was Joseph Nicephore. Other important men in photography history include
Alfred Stieglitz (who changed photography into art) and Henri Carrtier–Bresson (the father of
photojournalism). The next major camera movement was film cameras. These cameras came out in
the early 1900s. This movement gave the Granddaddy camera its name. The Granddaddy camera is
also known as a 35 mm (millimeter) point and shoot. There were many issues with film cameras.
With a film camera, you could not scan an image without it possibly getting destroyed. Also with a
film camera the film had to be developed. There

Louisville Flood Victims By Margaret Bourke-White
Description:
Margaret Bourke–White. Louisville Flood Victims. 1937. Photograph.
Analysis:
Margaret Bourke–White utilizes the actual horizontal lines of the billboard, as well as the implied
lines of the people's heads. The repetition of the people along with the faces on the billboard,
forcefully move the attention horizontally to the right of the photograph. This, in turn, makes the
viewer anticipate what is coming next. Although we know that the people are in a state of motion,
there is a sense of stillness as if the moment will never end. At first glance, the balance appears to be
somewhat symmetrical, but looking further, one notices the small cluster of children in the bottom
left corner, casting the balance as asymmetrical. It also appears as if there is a downward slope
going from the furthermost right, to the furthermost left of the image. The colors seem varied and
dark, contrasting the coats of the individuals with the stark white bags, and the intrusive bright
colors of the billboard, this creates a contrast in the mood of the apparent glee of the billboard, with
the traumatic expressions of the individuals. Although black and white, the image uses a wide range
of light and dark, going from the bright white of the bags and billboard, to the deep darks of the
coats and few of the glum faces. In between these two extremes, there are varying shades of light
and dark in the billboard and surrounding scene. Finally, the emphasis is placed on the people, the
victims of the Louisville flood. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Photographic Essay On Remembrance Day
Outline
My goal for this photographic essay is to capture the emotion and historical significance
surrounding Remembrance Day. I intend on attending a number of events this week, including the
Ghost Soliders Platoon, Sappers and Shrapnel Art Exhibition, Field of Remembrance and the main
ceremony featuring the last post. At these events I will take a large amount of photos from different
angles, in an effort to capture the grave feeling of this event in a single picture. I will use a close up
shot to reveal the details in the face of a soldier, a low–angle shot to uncover the shape of a well–
known statue and a combination of wide and high angle shots overlooking the poppies at both the
field out the front of Pulteney and North Terrace. Through a ... Show more content on

Picture (last)– "We Will Remember Them"
Every year, on the 11th day of the 11th Month at 11 am we pay our respects. We do not mock those
who returned with disabilities, we won't turn away from those suffering now, and we will never, nor
will we ever forget those who are gone. Unlike the previous photos, this image isn't positioned in

aftermath of war. With this image I leave you with one thought; We Will Remember.

Double Exposure Photography In The 1800s
In the 1860's people who were taking pictures were looking for a way to boost their business.
Because of this, they thought of a way to make the subjects appear twice in the photograph – this
way the birth of double exposure. In the images presented here, you can see that the subject is seen
twice in the photo but having a different position. To create this type of image, they would shoot the
subject in one position and then the subject must move quickly to another position before the second
image is taken. The people who take pictures also used rotating lens caps and special plates to come
up with these double–exposed images.

digital cameras were not yet a thought, double exposure photography was

Photographs have been circling the world for years now . There are many different types of cameras,
but only some have changed and revolutionized the world. The history behind them and the history
it has captured throughout the years has impacted the world in numerous ways. It is very important
to know how certain things like lighting and angle affect the outcome of photographs. To be able to

The lighting of a photograph affects the mood, shape, and texture of the photograph. There is two
types of lighting , low–key and high–key. Low–key lighting is used to give more shape to a

Nick Sousanis 'Second Chapter Unflattening'
The well–known cliché goes "a picture says a thousand words" and this is an idea that Nick
Sousanis explores in his book "Unflattening". The saying implies that images are able to speak
volumes, more than words could ever express. Images convey different messages to people and in
doing so evoke thoughts and emotions that words often cannot. Individuals interpret images based
on their own ideas and experiences, therefore an image can be seen in many different perspectives
creating diverse meanings from one single image. Since there are so many different perspectives it is
easy to see how Sousanis images can convey several different concepts.

It is easy to see how the image can convey many different concepts based on perception of
individuals. When looking at the image it is typical for the eye to be drawn to the bottom right
corner because of the dark sketch lines. While reading through the limited amount of text provided it
guides the reader into the concept is wants to convey. However, by the use of images one can get
many different thoughts and ideas without the restriction of words. The language used on this page
discusses the "QUEST FOR REASON", "THE FEAR OF THE UNKOWN", and "DEPTHS OF
LIGHT", and these ideas can all be seen solely through the image. The light is in the center of the
page and from my perspective this can be seen as the earth being the center of universe. The
lightness and darkness in the opposite corners of the pages can be seen as heaven and hell. The light
line hatching in the top corner can be perceived as heaven because heaven is often seen as being
above and correlated with lightness and white. Looking at the opposite corner of the image, there is
dark shading that can be seen as a representation of hell. Hell has always been associated with
darkness and as being below. This is just one interpretation of this image, while I see the message of
heaven and hell being conveyed from this picture other people may see another concept. In

The significance, symbolism, and other examples of ‘Light’...
"Light glorifies everything. It transforms and ennobles the most commonplace and ordinary

modern photography like Corey Holms and Howard Schatz I am going to look at how they use
'Light' in their work to create different effects and look at the significance, symbolism, and other
examples of 'Light' in photography.
Looking specifically at 'Liquid Light' as my project title, I am exploring different ways that light can

(as some of the artists work dates from 1960's.) It's not all photography but I thought it is still
relevant for my study of light. The first artist that caught my eye in this exhibition is Dan Flavin4
(April 1933–November 1996) who's first drawings and painting were influenced by Abstract
Expressionism. He then became a minimalist artist famous for creating sculptural objects and
installations from 'commercially available fluorescent light fixtures'. Although Flavin mainly
worked with fluorescent light fixtures I just wanted to look at these images of his work which I think
are so interesting because despite them being fluorescent lights, the glow and colours are soft and
create an almost romantic feel, contrary to what you would expect of this kind of lighting. I think
this is a mixture of the brightness of the lighting, the colour choices together– and in these particular
images, the background that they've been put against. The next artist in the

The True Ethnographer
The true photographer knows many worlds other than this one. The true photographer is more than
just an individual trained to capture images. They, like those creating with clay, ink, paint, or
celluloid, are artists of a unique craft. They are journalists and storytellers, visionaries and
messengers, communicating through the images that they create, the moods that they capture, and
the conclusions they invite us to interpret through our own perceived realities. They have the unique
ability to capture the essence of the human soul, to capture fleeting moments of beauty and

Daniel alone with his two life models – a slender and naturally beautiful but ripening late fifties

Photography Career Research Paper
Photography, and truly all of the "fine arts," is an extremely competitive field. It is a job that is
relatively easy to obtain, but due to that there are many working against you. A portion of why it is
so popular is that there is no required education level. It has been suggested that a person interested
in photography take at least two years at a postsecondary school. However, on–the–job experience
will prove just as useful in this career. Many people have the basics of what it takes to become a
photographer. A person interested should be decent with psychology and how the mind works, what
will attract people, and so on. They should also have good visualization skills, be creative, and know
how to be original even with all of the other photographs being produced around them. Having an

Careful Visual Observations Of Photography
Careful visual observations are key when distinguishing masterpieces of photography. The attention
to the slightest details and uses of many various techniques are what distance Gregory Crewdson
and William Eggleston from the norm. Though it is simple to discuss the contents of a photograph, it
takes a trained eye to analyze the true visual art that the picture portrays. Every image by both of
these photographs contains a hidden meaning, a variety of thousands of possible interpretations
made by the viewers. Composition and content are both considered and involved when the

There is no mistaking that Crewdson carefully set up every image to create a story that is seen
beyond the frame.
The simple realization is that, in modern art, the value of a photograph is not accredited to the
aesthetics of it. Though aesthetics plays an important role in the craftsmanship of an image, it is by
no means the selling point. Eggleston's photographs are simple yet extraordinary. In order to
understand them, you must understand what art truly is: a way of looking at the world through
different eyes. Art must induce emotions and create new thoughts. It challenges ones views of the
world by creating an entirely new one. Eggleston has mastered this technique. The simplicity of his
photography is the key to his success. Some even describe his works as "perfectly banal, perfectly
boring," yet they are just that, perfect.
"Birth" is featured in Crewdson's "Beneath the Roses" album. The image portrays a young women
sitting in a dimly lit room with a baby by her side. The setting is serene yet gloomy. The baby is
sleeping peacefully on the bed yet the mother has a look of confusion and sadness. The woman is
looking at the child, not knowing what do. She is wearing a patterned nightgown which reveals a
small tattoo on her arm. Darkness surrounds the motel room as lights from beyond the frame shine
into it. On the far nightstand, there is a pack of prescription drugs sitting by the lamp. On the other,

In 1683 photographic cameras were a development of the camera obscura. The camera obscura is
Latin for dark room, it also goes back to Ancient Greece where Aristotle saw how light passed

Sebastiao Salgado's Photography
Many photographers use their photographic skills to achieve certain and specific goals or for clients.

"Photography, perhaps the most versatile of cultural media and so universally accessible, is perhaps
the most translatable of "texts" and hence the most prone to aestheticization" (Nair). This quote from
the book about the photography of Sebastiao Salgado really captures exactly what he was trying to
do and how he uses photography to achieve that goal. By his work being displayed in many galleries
all over the world, and as a result, many people get to see them, those subjects in the photos gain
something from his work. Not only is his work on displays in galleries, his work is all over the
internet. Most of his work comes up when his name is searched into Google, so it is available for
virtually anyone to see. Having his work so visible for the world to see, he is able to educate the
world of the poverty, hardship, and turmoil that some countries and communities face that normally
they would not know about. Not only does his work reflect the bad times some people in the world
face, his work also shows the culture of other countries. They reflect how others live our their daily

James Welling Research Paper
James Welling is commonly lumped in with the group of artists referred to as the Pictures
Generation – the generation of artitsts that were coming of age in the late 70s, as the first generation
to be strongly defined by the omnipresense of mass media, and who created works that were critical
of this nature of media (CITE).1 During his time at CalArts, Welling was producing collage work
that was very much in line with his fellow artists in the group. His MFA thesis work, And Should

Cigaretes. However, he quickly abandoned this style of art making in favor of producing

Pictorialism: The Late 19th And Early 20th Centuries
Helen Jiang
Critical Analysis Paper In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Pictorialism was the dominating
photographic style that spread internationally. There is no specific definition for this word, but it
generally refers to a style where the focus more on the photographers intent and emotion rather than
as a means of documentation. Characteristics of a pictorial photograph includes lack of clear focus,
visible manipulations on the surface, and different color tones. Perhaps the biggest point that defines
pictorialism is the photographer's intent to draw out the emotion and feeling of the viewer.

The Influence Of Realism In 19th Century Photography

is, how 19th century photography worked, and how they are similar and different. This will be show

The artist of this painting, Gustave Courbet, was one of the first artist to call himself a "Realist"
(1819–1877). This painting is a picture of a young man and an old man crushing rocks to produce
the gravel used for the roadbeds. These stonebreakers represent the disenfranchised lower class on
whose backs the modern life was being built upon. The young man in the painting is struggling to
move the large basket of rocks to the side of the road. He is wearing a ripped shirt and pants, but his
working boots are more modern. The older gentleman, is knelt down, tired from the work. He is
breaking the rocks, while wearing the outfit of a lower class man. What the older man was wearing
is the more traditional style of a peasant with his wooden shoes. The younger man is almost
representing a grim of the future, while the older man shows a more out of date, or the rural past.
Courbet said when talking about his inspiration for this painting is that "One side is a an old man
seventy... On the other side is a young fellow... In labor such as this, one's life begins that way, and it
ends the same way." (Stokstad 973) Courbet does a great job of signifying the brutality of the
modern life with his choices of dull, and dark colors, as well as a more rough painting patters, he

European Photography History
Before photography impacted the European world, many people thought that use of a bulky camera
was trivial. Not until later in the 19th century did people give the idea of photography a chance.
Photography was a significant innovation in European History because it allowed individuals to see
the disarray that occurred in the world, gave light to the growing improvement of technology, and
assisted photographers in capturing priceless scenes. Prior to the use of photography, paintings,
drawings, and sculptures were the main means of documenting important events. (Collins, 14) Due

Photographs Capture Time And Create Meaning
Photographs capture time and create meaning. Mark Klett's "Under the Dark Cloth", is a simple, yet
compelling piece of art which captures his experience in Monument Valley, Arizona on May 27th,
1989. The perspective of the photograph is strategic in allowing the viewers to see from Klett's point
of view. This angle places the viewer in the first person, connecting them directly to the image.
Images of landscapes are often engrossing, Klett's piece does this on two planes.
In the text, Visual Methodologies, author, Gillian Rose uses semiotics as a way to make sense of an
image. She defines semiotics as the study of signs and their use or interpretation, or, "how images
make meaning" (pg. 75). Under close inspection of Mark Klett's "Under ... Show more content on

Another question could be looked at through the lens of "positional communication". "Who is
positioned as superior and who inferior?" (pg. 82). The photographer makes the audience feel as if
they are a part of the image, giving the audience a connection to the subject of the photograph. This
allows power within the image to be equally distributed and shared between human and nature.
The objects within the image, such as the watch, camera, and dark cloth connote time, preservation,
and reflection. Klett's use of signs give his photo the purpose it needs to remain captivating. Within
Klett's photo, icons, indexes, and symbols are all presented.
The icon most prevalent in the image is the upside down image of Monument Valley. This iconic
image represents that specific rock structure in the valley. This image is also a synecdochal sign, it is
a part of this rocky range, representing the national park as a whole.
The two indexes that stand out immediately are the camera and the dark cloth. When you see a
camera– you immediately think of documentation or memories. When we think of something under
the dark cloth or in a dark space we think of referees reviewing a play or the process of developing a
photograph. When someone is under the dark cloth, it is a personal, capturing moment. This sign is a
moment of silence and critical reflection.
The symbols which are presented in the photograph include the camera, watch, and the style of the
photograph.

Fox Talbot's The Open Door
Is a photograph worth more than just words? Absolutely. The visual choices made by a photographer
delivers powerful messages, and in W.H.F. Talbot's photo titled The Open Door, I see a picture that
utilizes shadows and light to emphasize the subject. The word photography means "writing with
light." With the invention of calotype, Fox Talbot started the revolution of modern photography in
today's world.
Trained as a mathematician and chemist, Fox Talbot toyed with photography because it offered a
form of documentation or evidence of his findings in science. Thus, photography developed from
within the area of science. As he searched for a reasonable method of transferring his captured

But I see the shadows and light as inviting me into the room. In many cultures, people view a
doorway as a symbolic boundary between life and death, but because the door is open, I can see
hope, not death and darkness. Even though the vines and darkness within the room create a kind of
creepy feeling, the picture is inviting and appealing while emphasizing a mystery and uncertainty.
The old blocks used to construct the building along with the rustic door, and primitive broom
indicates a time back in history. In the center of the photograph, the vertical frame of the doorway
appears in contrast to the diagonal shadows, but I see a relationship between the angled broom
which is leaning and the shadow on the door. The angles and shadows contrast with the balanced
lantern on the outside wall which reflects light. Similar to the genre of Dutch paintings of the time,
Fox Talbot characterized the scenes of daily life of the ordinary people. The photograph presents an
old building bathed in light, while the interior is dark and shadowy. The scientist turned artist uses
symmetry to accent the open doorway. The works of Fox Talbot established photography as an art.
This early photograph's genre is that it depicts the simple side explicitly imitating the Dutch
paintings of scenes from everyday life and an interest in the ordinary things around him. The artist

Photojournalism: During The Great Depression By Walker Evans
During the Great Depression, Walker Evans worked primarily as a photojournalist and
documentarian, using the medium of photography to capture American life in visual detail. Many of
Evans's most famous photographs appear in his book, co–written with James Agee, Let Us Now
Praise Famous Men. The book was in part funded by grants issued by New Deal programs the
Roosevelt administration designed to address systemic poverty. Photojournalism was integral to
achieving the goals of the New Deal, which is why Evans and Agee were able to compile their
historiography. In the photo of Allie Mae Burroughs, Evans depicts the primary purpose of his
research: to offer proof of the effects of income disparity and economic exploitation. In 1981,

She views the role of photography from two different angles or lenses: one as the pure documentary
capture and the other as the "order of simulacra," that generates the global consumer society, as
Phillips (1982) puts it (p. 27). Evans captured his original subject in a straightforward way,
reflecting only on the reality he perceives. As a photojournalist, he attempts to attain objectivity but
fails because it is impossible for a portrait to completely omit the bias of the photographer. The fact
that Evans compiled a book on the subject highlights the journalist's honest lack of objectivity in his
work. Evans meant to make a statement with his photographs every bit as much as Levine does.
Levine reflects on the act of photography as a powerful interaction between the subject and the
objectified, the object and the subjugated. This is the primary way that Levine distances herself from
that which she imitates. Barthes (1977) would point out that Levine is engaging in a new form of
encoding through her work; she is not creating a "simple agglutination of symbols," but rather
something that has meaning in itself (p.

Aperture controls the depth of field. The depth of field is represented by a number called the F/Stop.
When the F/stop is higher (F/22) the picture has a deeper depth of field. The opposite happens when
the F/stop is a lower number. An F/stop of F/1.4, for example, will have a shallower depth of field
where one object is accented without distractions from the background. A photographer may want to
adjust the aperture depending on the type of picture they are taking. A bigger f/stop is good for
taking landscape pictures because it captures every detail of the picture. A smaller f/stop is good for
taking a picture of something that needs to be accented. The blurring of the background gets rid of
distractions from the background and helps the viewer focus on the subject of the image. Shutter
speed is another factor that affects the outcome of your photo. Shutter speed controls motion blur
along with the amount of light that is let into the camera. When taking a picture of an object in
motion different shutter speed will cause the object to look more or less blurred. For instance, a
slower shutter speed (1/4th of a second) will cause the object to look very blurred. In contrast, a
faster shutter speed (1/1000th of a second) will capture more detail of the moving object. For
example, a photographer taking pictures of a nascar race for a sports magazine is going to want to
use a very fast shutter speed to capture every detail of the passing cars. A problem with increasing
the shutter speed is that the image produced becomes darker and darker when the shutter speed is
faster. The lens does not let as much light in and this makes the image hard to see due to darkness.
To compensate photographers will often increase the ISO. Increasing the ISO from 100 to 3200 or
greater will increase the brightness of the image but will also greatly increase the noise that your
photo contains. At a higher

the corruption surrounding the recent and future events of the castle. The poison with which

the play, even men outside of the country can sense the rotting inside. Scornfully, Claudius says
Fortinbras thinks "by our late dear brother 's death, our state to be disjoint and out of frame" (I.2.19–

men regardless of their nationality; in particular, this idea of one not knowing about the hidden

Observing William Penn's Photography
I Description
At first glance I notice this Irving Penn photograph seems mysterious and blurry, much like a lot of
his works of art. He uses the blurring technique to make you wonder more in detail what is going on
in the photo. When researching, I found most of his works are portraits unlike Cretan Landscape.
Irving Penn was known as a photographer whose classical simplicity transformed the pages of
Vogue magazine. There are very few great portraitists, but he is a sort of sorcerer who seems beyond
resemblance. Irving Penn's Cretan Landscape was a rather large photograph at 15.4x22in. However,
it still showcases the magnificent artwork that Irving Penn is capable of. When looking at this
photograph, I first think that the man on the horse is the main focus, almost as if he is in charge over
everyone else in the picture. I also notice the animals in the back ground almost like cattle, things
like sheep and cows. What I don't understand about this photograph is the shadows of people behind
him. I don't understand their meaning in this picture. I also don't understand why this photograph's
setting is in the deep woods, almost as if they are all hiding from something. Penn stays in a strict
color scheme, using multiple shades of gray staying dark around the sides and moving to lighter
shades in the center spaces. He blends these colors going through the many prints he used in the
platinum metals and then slowly blends the more distinct colors when the hand–coated color

This appealed to me because it reflected my own attitude.
After studying the portrait for a considerable amount of time I began to see possible sadness or self–

Portrait of a Young Man was painted during the Mannerism period. It was done by Bronzino in Italy

A Brief Biography of Lois-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre
Louis–Jacques–Mandé Daguerre Louis–Jacques–Mandé Daguerre is historically recognized as a
French artist, a mirror manufacturer, a skilled panoramic painter, and more notably, one the
Founding Fathers of Photography. While "Founding Father of Photography" is an impressive name
to boast, in the scientific community he is known an accomplished chemist credited with recording
some of the first tangible (non drawn) two–dimensional images of our three–dimensional world.
Louis Daguerre was born on November 18, 1787 in a French commune called Cormeilles–en–
Parisis in Val–d'Oise, France. During his life, he studied and worked heavily with theatre, design,
and stage illusions. His experiments led him to become a prestigious architect and set artist, later
inventing the Diorama, a mobile theatre with set pieces which allowed for the illusion of effects like
snow, sunsets, moonlit nights, and rainbows. Because his craftsmanship required great accuracy,
Daguerre saw it important to capture nature 'as is'. He utilized the camera obscura, dating back to to
470 BCE to optically project images onto a plane for tracing. Daguerre would eventually adapt
concepts used in the camera obscura for his own work with daguerrotypes. In 1829, at the age of 42,
Daguerre partnered with a chemist/inventor named Nicéphore Niépce to continue experimentation
with Niépce's creation, the heliograph. Made in 1822, the heliograph is a process of 'drawing' with
the sun by exposing light onto a light–sensitive

Dystopian Images In The Dark Knight

  • 1. Dystopian Images In The Dark Knight The image above, is the official movie poster for the 2008 film "The Dark Knight" released months in advance to accumulate interest in the live action version of the famous gotham hero Batman. It was designed by BLT Communications for the 2000s reboot of Batman and is the second film in the "Dark Knight" trilogy from the Warner Bro. production company. The movie poster depicts a dystopian society through both imagery and diction. As you can see at the very top of the poster reads "Welcome to a world without rules", immediately you are able to deduce that the story in which is to be told might not be a happy one. Furthermore, going back to imagery you see a building which seems to have been blown up, a dark sky, and a cloaked menacing male ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Terry Richardson: A Predator? These photographs were taken by Terry Richardson, who is featured in the last image wearing a blue flannel shirt. Terry Richardson is a very well–known portrait and fashion photographer who––as evidenced by the individuals depicted above––is famous for his portraits of high profile celebrities. This of course does not detract from Richardson's own fame (or infamy). He has been accused numerous times of sexual harassment and sexual impropriety during photoshoots, and is a highly polarizing figure in the media, which often portrays him as a predator. Much of his earlier work is distinctly pornographic in nature, and has led to much criticism. Despite his personal and professional history, Richardson's iconic style is sought after by high profile ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Progression And Effect Of Photographic Abilities The Progression and effect of Photographic Abilities The world has been mesmerized by a photograph's ability to show event after it has happened and to keep that instant alive forever. Photography is a way to capture a moment in time; it has grown and changed a great deal in the last two–hundred years, the business has affected the economy, and the uses along with photographers' styles have evolved. The art of photography seems very simple today, all that is needed is a small device in one's pocket, but 200 years ago that was not the case. Merriam–Webster defines photography as, "the art or process of producing images on a sensitive surface by the action of light" (Merriam– Webster 480). This process took a lot of steps to be discovered. As ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Gustre Dore Reflection On Tuesday, July 11, 2017, I made a trip to the Denver Art Museum. I found a painting by Gustave Dore, a French painter from Paris, France. The piece was, The Family of Street Acrobats: the Injured Child painted in 1873. After studying this piece of art in person I noticed many different elements and characteristics in the actual painting. These are not seen in the photographed image of the painting that is on the Denver Art Museum Online. There are many visual elements that are taken away from a painting when it is made available in an online collections website. When I saw The Family of Street Acrobats: the Injured Child I immediately went up to it and I could see the texture of the paint, the line and the blobs on the mothers dress and the long lines of the back ground. The paint was raised, which you cannot observe in the online picture. The picture online was obviously edited. The color and light are changed significantly through the editing. It makes the painting look very light and you are able to see more detail without having to look at it for long. By making the painting brighter it took away from the original colors of the paint. The father is too bright. This change seems to alter the mood and energy that the painting is projecting. The size of the painting is misrepresented in the editing of it. When comparing the two you can see that the online image was cropped. This takes away the space at the very top of the painting. This is significant because you lose ... • 6. Analysis Of Retouch Yourself : The Pleasures And Politics... In chapter nine of Digital snaps: the new face of photography, titled Retouch Yourself: The pleasures and politics of digital cosmetic surgery, written by Tanya Sheehan, who is an associate professor and chair of the department of art at Colby College. She discusses the effect of the Photoshop look on society, and how with technology progressing it has become easier to create and have the perfect body look you have always wanted. The questions being raised throughout the chapter is if this new founded process was morally right, is it right to remove someone's identity and imperfections just so they can fit into this bracket of being perfect. A debate in 1982 asked commercial operators this: "If a person has an habitual freckled face, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Is this kind of modification on images something we should be accepting? As this adds the extra pressure on people in society to look a certain way to not become an outcast. Digital Snaps: the new face of photography has given me a good introduction and insight to the negative side of photo manipulation, the way that Sheehan writes is very clear and informative and this is what has allowed to gain such a wider knowledge around photo manipulation which will now help me with my further research by giving me a wider range of discussion to explore. Each Wild Idea; writing, photography, history written by Geoffrey Batchen was published in 2001. Batchen is a professor of the History of Photography and Contemporary Art at the City University of New York Graduate Center. Much like Digital Snaps: the new face of photography, Each Wild Idea; writing, photography, history discusses and explores the history of photography in many areas, including the many issues that were come across over the years, including photo manipulation. Throughout Batchen reflects on the history of photography and does this by giving specific examples of photographs that are relatable to what he is discussing. Batchen also discusses how we have become accustomed to this modification and whether or not we should be accepting it. In chapter six of Each Wild Idea; writing, photography, ... • 7. Comparison Of Holcomb In The Book Capote The town of Holcomb, Kansas is very stale and damaged throughout the book Capote characterizes his view of Holcomb by using rhetorical devices such as imagery, diction, repetition, foreshadowing, and selection of detail to give us a glimpse of his perspective of Holcomb from the beginning of the book until the end. On page four when Holcomb is introduced Capote uses imagery to give us a image in our mind of what Holcomb looks like. Throughout part one he gives us an image that sticks on his view of Holcomb. Holcomb, Kansas stands on the high wheat plains of Western, Kansas. The town of Holcomb is made up of old buildings and the land there is flat. The school of Holcomb is the only good establishment in the town. It states that on Page four " Holcomb, like the rest of Kansas, is dry". When he talks about Holcomb being dry he means that Holcomb is one of those towns that are in the dark until something serious happens, like the murder of the four Clutters. The murder of the four Clutters is what got everyone's attention about Holcomb because like the book stated, "Holcomb was dry". Capote uses a variety of diction to give us his view of Holcomb from the beginning of the book until the end. He uses different words to give us a certain view of Holcomb and the diction is what connects us to that view. On page four it states that " Nearby is another building with an irrelevant sign, this one in flaking gold on a dirty window Holcomb Bank". Given that the window was dirty it gives you a glance that this town isn't the best at keeping things clean. However, Capote states that "the depot itself, with its peeling sulphur colored paint, is equally melancholy". At this point you start to see Capote's view of Holcomb as being damaged and ran down because the paint is peeling and the window is dirty. Because of the various diction he uses were able to see those images of Holcomb. Without diction the sentences would have a plain meaning to them and it makes his view boring. Diction is what gives Capote's sentences that energy to enhance our view of Holcomb. Capote's way of expressing his glimpse of Holcomb is through selection of detail. This one is a big one because it makes the sentences pop out. Each sentence has a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Essay On Anne Frank The ability to analyze and depict the elements that are portrayed in an image is a skill that is practical to own. In your educational career, throughout most subjects you are given hundreds of images to look at. Some are simple and straightforward, and others have a much more deeper meaning to what is really going on. Having the skill to analyze an image and depict all the elements gives you a clearer and broader sense of what is going on. For example the image I have chosen to analyze is of a young jewish girl by the name of Anne Frank who wrote a diary about hiding with her family in Amsterdam during World War II. Content is the specific objects or subjects being presented in the picture. The main object is in the picture is the young girl who is Anne Frank. She appears to be young and hopeful of something as her eyes are big. It looks like she brown hair and a slightly bigger nose and those characteristics were deemed bad by the Nazi's. Almost like the background of where she took that photo had no color. This gives the picture a mysterious and dark tone to the photo. Composition refers how everything is layout whether there are objects in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the early years of photography, few if any photographers were specialists in any area other than commercial portraiture, which was the main area in which a living could be made from the new medium. Early photographers did fairly often photograph buildings, often working from the window of a convenient room rather than at street level. The photograph doesn't really have a story to it, as there isn't much going on, it doesn't have energy or any movement to it at all. However it could easily be a scene used in a film, such as an establishing shot. The photo has a certain peaceful feel to it. It is soothing to look at; this is because it is a calm, quiet setting– you can almost feel your presence there, staring into the beautiful view. I think the reason that the photo has such a positive, relaxing feel to it is down to the fact that the composition of the photo reminds you of a deep blue sea or a clear black sky. The photo has strong verticals and horizontal, which emphasise a static feel and the negative space. The picture has a large depth of field with the two buildings the centre point of it. It is a visual diary, containing the secrets of the earth. This great pastime is used all around the world. The good, the bad, and the ugly makes up photography. Anyone can enjoy photography including you. There are many different parts in photography such as its history and equipment. There are many types of photography as well. Photography in today's society is called the killer fine art. Photography was invented around the 1820s. It is now the most growing hobby in the world. The first camera created is called the Camera Obscura. The Camera Obscura was used during the 13th – 14th centuries. It was a dark closed box–shaped space with a hole on one side. The Camera Obsurca got its name from the Latin word "Dark Room". The man behind the camera was Joseph Nicephore. Other important men in photography history include Alfred Stieglitz (who changed photography into art) and Henri Carrtier–Bresson (the father of photojournalism). The next major camera movement was film cameras. These cameras came out in the early 1900s. This movement gave the Granddaddy camera its name. The Granddaddy camera is also known as a 35 mm (millimeter) point and shoot. There were many issues with film cameras. • 11. Louisville Flood Victims By Margaret Bourke-White Description: Margaret Bourke–White. Louisville Flood Victims. 1937. Photograph. Analysis: Margaret Bourke–White utilizes the actual horizontal lines of the billboard, as well as the implied lines of the people's heads. The repetition of the people along with the faces on the billboard, forcefully move the attention horizontally to the right of the photograph. This, in turn, makes the viewer anticipate what is coming next. Although we know that the people are in a state of motion, there is a sense of stillness as if the moment will never end. At first glance, the balance appears to be somewhat symmetrical, but looking further, one notices the small cluster of children in the bottom left corner, casting the balance as asymmetrical. It also appears as if there is a downward slope going from the furthermost right, to the furthermost left of the image. The colors seem varied and dark, contrasting the coats of the individuals with the stark white bags, and the intrusive bright colors of the billboard, this creates a contrast in the mood of the apparent glee of the billboard, with the traumatic expressions of the individuals. Although black and white, the image uses a wide range of light and dark, going from the bright white of the bags and billboard, to the deep darks of the coats and few of the glum faces. In between these two extremes, there are varying shades of light and dark in the billboard and surrounding scene. Finally, the emphasis is placed on the people, the victims of the Louisville flood. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The saying implies that images are able to speak volumes, more than words could ever express. Images convey different messages to people and in doing so evoke thoughts and emotions that words often cannot. Individuals interpret images based on their own ideas and experiences, therefore an image can be seen in many different perspectives creating diverse meanings from one single image. The old blocks used to construct the building along with the rustic door, and primitive broom indicates a time back in history. In the center of the photograph, the vertical frame of the doorway appears in contrast to the diagonal shadows, but I see a relationship between the angled broom which is leaning and the shadow on the door. The angles and shadows contrast with the balanced lantern on the outside wall which reflects light. Similar to the genre of Dutch paintings of the time, Fox Talbot characterized the scenes of daily life of the ordinary people. The photograph presents an old building bathed in light, while the interior is dark and shadowy. The scientist turned artist uses symmetry to accent the open doorway. The works of Fox Talbot established photography as an art. This early photograph's genre is that it depicts the simple side explicitly imitating the Dutch paintings of scenes from everyday life and an interest in the ordinary things around him. • 29. Photojournalism: During The Great Depression By Walker Evans During the Great Depression, Walker Evans worked primarily as a photojournalist and documentarian, using the medium of photography to capture American life in visual detail. Many of Evans's most famous photographs appear in his book, co–written with James Agee, Let Us Now Praise Famous Men. The book was in part funded by grants issued by New Deal programs the Roosevelt administration designed to address systemic poverty. Photojournalism was integral to achieving the goals of the New Deal, which is why Evans and Agee were able to compile their historiography. In the photo of Allie Mae Burroughs, Evans depicts the primary purpose of his research: to offer proof of the effects of income disparity and economic exploitation. In 1981, Sherrie Levine ... She views the role of photography from two different angles or lenses: one as the pure documentary capture and the other as the "order of simulacra," that generates the global consumer society, as Phillips (1982) puts it (p. 27). Evans captured his original subject in a straightforward way, reflecting only on the reality he perceives. As a photojournalist, he attempts to attain objectivity but fails because it is impossible for a portrait to completely omit the bias of the photographer. The fact that Evans compiled a book on the subject highlights the journalist's honest lack of objectivity in his work. Evans meant to make a statement with his photographs every bit as much as Levine does. Levine reflects on the act of photography as a powerful interaction between the subject and the objectified, the object and the subjugated. This is the primary way that Levine distances herself from that which she imitates. Barthes (1977) would point out that Levine is engaging in a new form of encoding through her work; she is not creating a "simple agglutination of symbols," but rather something that has meaning in itself (p. ... I was intrigued by videos and photos. Me and my friends used the family video camera to make movies and film skits. I took general art classes from Kindergarten up until now. My interest in graphic design and computer editing programs spiked in 7th grade when i took a technology class with Mr. Mayes. I learned how to use photoshop and edited pictures for fun. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Aperture controls the depth of field. The depth of field is represented by a number called the F/Stop. When the F/stop is higher (F/22) the picture has a deeper depth of field. The opposite happens when the F/stop is a lower number. An F/stop of F/1.4, for example, will have a shallower depth of field where one object is accented without distractions from the background. A photographer may want to adjust the aperture depending on the type of picture they are taking. A bigger f/stop is good for taking landscape pictures because it captures every detail of the picture. A smaller f/stop is good for taking a picture of something that needs to be accented. The blurring of the background gets rid of distractions from the background and helps the viewer focus on the subject of the image. Shutter speed is another factor that affects the outcome of your photo. Shutter speed controls motion blur along with the amount of light that is let into the camera. When taking a picture of an object in motion different shutter speed will cause the object to look more or less blurred. For instance, a slower shutter speed (1/4th of a second) will cause the object to look very blurred. In contrast, a faster shutter speed (1/1000th of a second) will capture more detail of the moving object. For example, a photographer taking pictures of a nascar race for a sports magazine is going to want to use a very fast shutter speed to capture every detail of the passing cars. A problem with increasing the shutter speed is that the image produced becomes darker and darker when the shutter speed is faster. The lens does not let as much light in and this makes the image hard to see due to darkness. To compensate photographers will often increase the ISO. Increasing the ISO from 100 to 3200 or greater will increase the brightness of the image but will also greatly increase the noise that your photo contains. At a higher ... Both Afghan Girl, a colored 20 by 24 inch cibachrome photograph by Steve McCurry, and The Roaring Lion, a black and white 10⅞ by 8½ inch photo by Yousuf Karsh, are iconic images that grabs the audience's attention through glaring eyes. Although both photographers capture intense stares within their portraitures, they still have various differences regarding color, composition, and lighting to produce drama. It is said that the eyes are the window to the soul, which is clearly true in Steve McCurry's colorized, 20 by 24 inch, close up, cibachrome photograph, Afghan Girl. He stands at the center of the image with his right hand holding the ear of a chair, and his left hand placed on his hip. Although the image is asymmetrical, Karsh was able to strategically balance it. Having the chair on the left side made the picture left heavy, but by simply having the elbow sticking out and being cropped off it created a sense of balance. The background of the photo has a slight blur to it, meaning that it's not as important as the center figure. Karsh also incorporates a faint sense of vignetting into the image; this darkens the edges of the frame, causing the audience to not pay attention to it, however, he does leave the area around Churchill's head with a bright glow, signifying that that area is the most important. Along with the corners of the image being dark and the faint glow around his head, Churchill's face and stern expression towards the camera is very detailed with many different values unlike his suit which is dark and not very ... A surge of pain ran up my arm as I placed my hand upon the memorial and began thinking of all the pain it had brought me even though years had passed. As the agony engulfed me, I fell to my knees. Then I began to ponder why anyone would want such a concrete reminder of what happened during this disastrous event. These are the thoughts that may have went through the minds of the subjects in the images, A Man Kneels before the 9/11 Memorial and The Old Vet and His Tank. Both of these photographs depict sadness for the viewer by making the men the focal points of the images. A Man Kneels before the 9/11 Memorial suggests that a story is behind the image and a viewer can see Robert Peraza is a symbol for the grief and distress which 9/11 brought. Yet, and story is not clear the image has many story elements; they include: the posture or the man, his face, and the location. Robert Peraza, the subject of this picture, has a clear emotional attachment to the memorial. This is shown in the way he has kneeled down in grief with his head lowered, and his hand still outstretched on an engraved name. The location also brings about emotion due to the fact that the memorial represents the day thousands died on September 11, 2001. Although, some may not recognize the memorial thus creating less emotion: whereas, The Old Vet and His Tank presents emotion more effectively by use of body language, facial expression, and the background. The Veteran has been overcome with shock and has knelt to the ground. His body language suggests he is saddened; upon looking at his facial expression this is proven. His eyes are closed and he is looking down in despair. The background tells a story because a tank is clearly shown and the viewer does not have to guess where he his, although, they may not know the complete background ... The Dark Images Of Poison And Disease The dark images of poison and disease are portrayed throughout the story of Hamlet, and follower the corruption surrounding the recent and future events of the castle. The poison with which Claudius had murdered King Hamlet spreads in a sense throughout the country, until "something is rotten in Denmark", as Marcellus notes (I.4.90). Shakespeare shades in words of sickness continually during the play, possibly helping best to exemplify the ill condition of matters plaguing not only Denmark, but the characters as well. Horatio believes that the vision of the haunting Ghost is a forewarning to Denmark, just as the pale, sick moon was to Rome an image of the ill events to come. This force was also referred to earlier, in Hamlet 's soliloquy of the "slings and arrows of outrageous Fortune", going on to speak of being "sicklied o 'er with the pale cast of thought" (III.1.90), yet another image of disease. Still in the opening scenes of the play, even men outside of the country can sense the rotting inside. Scornfully, Claudius says Fortinbras thinks "by our late dear brother 's death, our state to be disjoint and out of frame" (I.2.19– 20), referring not only to the state 's political confusion, but its sick state of health as well. He continues, and notes that the dying king of Norway is "impotent and bedrid, and scarcely hears of his nephew 's [Fortinbras] purpose" (I.2.29–30) to attack Denmark. The universal illness besets all men regardless of their nationality; in particular, this idea of one not knowing about the hidden actions of another is reminiscent of the other plots in the play. • 35. Observing William Penn's Photography I Description At first glance I notice this Irving Penn photograph seems mysterious and blurry, much like a lot of his works of art. He uses the blurring technique to make you wonder more in detail what is going on in the photo. When researching, I found most of his works are portraits unlike Cretan Landscape. Irving Penn was known as a photographer whose classical simplicity transformed the pages of Vogue magazine. There are very few great portraitists, but he is a sort of sorcerer who seems beyond resemblance. Irving Penn's Cretan Landscape was a rather large photograph at 15.4x22in. However, it still showcases the magnificent artwork that Irving Penn is capable of. When looking at this photograph, I first think that the man on the horse is the main focus, almost as if he is in charge over everyone else in the picture. I also notice the animals in the back ground almost like cattle, things like sheep and cows. What I don't understand about this photograph is the shadows of people behind him. I don't understand their meaning in this picture. I also don't understand why this photograph's setting is in the deep woods, almost as if they are all hiding from something. Penn stays in a strict color scheme, using multiple shades of gray staying dark around the sides and moving to lighter shades in the center spaces. He blends these colors going through the many prints he used in the platinum metals and then slowly blends the more distinct colors when the hand–coated color ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The portrait is 37 5/8 by 29 ½ inches and is an oil on wood( Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1999). I picked this painting because of the self assurance, at first glance, of the young man that is depicted. This appealed to me because it reflected my own attitude. After studying the portrait for a considerable amount of time I began to see possible sadness or self– doubt in the young mans face that betrays his powerful stance. I felt a connection to the young man, knowing all too well what it was like to present a powerful outside image while knowing there was a self conscious and scared person inside. ... The frame cuts the shapes in the painting, this was done purposely in the typical Mannerism style which usually crowded the pictorial area . The painting is supported by wood, opaque oil paints were applied thickly with a fine brush, I was unable to see any distinct brush strokes. The forms are flat except for the beads on the young man's hat which seem to raise off the painting. The portrait contains a simple organization. Context Moves Meaning: Visual Analysis Visual Analysis 2: Context Moves Meaning Images are prominent everywhere in our world today, and are interpreted by each person who views them in a differing way. The reason individuals may view an image in a different way has to do with the context that it is viewed in. The context does not necessarily change the signs that an image displays, but instead leads to different signifiers and conclusions that can be drawn from those same signs. The drastic change that a different caption on the same photo can make in one's comprehension and conclusions of an image and the meaning of it, presents how vital it is that an image is viewed in the context the author intended to achieve. • 39. A Brief Biography of Lois-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre Louis–Jacques–Mandé Daguerre Louis–Jacques–Mandé Daguerre is historically recognized as a French artist, a mirror manufacturer, a skilled panoramic painter, and more notably, one the Founding Fathers of Photography. While "Founding Father of Photography" is an impressive name to boast, in the scientific community he is known an accomplished chemist credited with recording some of the first tangible (non drawn) two–dimensional images of our three–dimensional world. Louis Daguerre was born on November 18, 1787 in a French commune called Cormeilles–en– Parisis in Val–d'Oise, France. During his life, he studied and worked heavily with theatre, design, and stage illusions. His experiments led him to become a prestigious architect and set artist, later inventing the Diorama, a mobile theatre with set pieces which allowed for the illusion of effects like snow, sunsets, moonlit nights, and rainbows. Because his craftsmanship required great accuracy, Daguerre saw it important to capture nature 'as is'. He utilized the camera obscura, dating back to to 470 BCE to optically project images onto a plane for tracing. Daguerre would eventually adapt concepts used in the camera obscura for his own work with daguerrotypes. In 1829, at the age of 42, Daguerre partnered with a chemist/inventor named Nicéphore Niépce to continue experimentation with Niépce's creation, the heliograph. Made in 1822, the heliograph is a process of 'drawing' with the sun by exposing light onto a light–sensitive ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
