Hayao Miyazaki and Japanese Animation Essay
Hayao Miyazaki Hayao Miyazaki has been revolutionary in Japanese animation. A mangaka (an artist/writer/creator of manga, Japanese comics), an
animator, and storyteller, Miyazaki has not only been very successful in his work, well known and loved by many, but has changed the world of
anime with his unique style of drawing. Through passion and hard work, Miyazaki has become one of the most successful animators in all of Japan.
Miyazaki was born on January 5th, 1941, in Tokyo, Japan (MUBI.com). His father, Katsuji Miyazaki, was the director and owner of their family's firm,
Miyazaki Airplane, that made parts for Zero fighter planes. His father's job contributed to his fascination with flying, and accurately depicting it in his

2: 344–345) Manga grew in popularity in Japan while he was still in high school, and he decided he wanted to be a comic artist. While animation was
regaining its popularity in the postwar years, he saw Legend of the White Serpent by Taji Yabushita, the first Japanese colour animated movie, and he
absolutely fell in love with the feature. After graduating from Toyotama High School (1959) he went on to enroll in Gakushuin University, where he
studied political science and economics. While he was there, he studied European childrens books and comics after joining a children's literature
research society, things by authors like Rosemary Sutcliff and Antoine du Saint–Exupery. In 1963, he finally graduated with a degree in political
science and economics, but instead of moving into the fields of politics or finance, he promptly went to get a job at the animation studio of Toei
Company, Toei Cine, where he had an apprenticeship before he was allowed to work as an entry–level in–betweener on Watchdog Woof–Woof and
Wolf Boy Ken (an in–betweener takes the first and last frames of the action or movement drawn by the animator and creates the flow, the series of
picutres/sketches in between the two to connect them and complete the movement or action). He was a hard, dedicated worker, with a passion for what
he does, and so he quickly climbed up to positions with more and more responsibility in the animation industry. Wolf

Hayao Miyazaki Auteur Style Analysis
Many people may have a specific style in which they like to dress. A woman might have a signature lipstick she enjoys wearing, a man might have
a distinct cologne that stands out from the rest. Movies are not too far apart in comparison. Sometimes people find films more enjoyable than
others, and often do not realize they come from the same director. The Auteur theory is a that defines the director as the sole author of the entire
film, adding his or her own personal style. When it comes to the world of animation, director Hayao Miyazaki is a pioneer in auteur. His specific
directorial style is seen in many of his films in which he manages to make films enjoyable to adults of all ages. Kiki's Delivery Service was one of

The climax scene begins in the home of one of Kiki client's. While visiting Kiki sees on her client's television that her friend Tombo is hanging off
a blimp that is heading straight into town. Imminently, Kiki then rushes to her friend's aid even though she has lost her ability to fly. So, with a
sense of purpose, Kiki takes a broom from a man in the middle of town and concentrates extremely hard to fly again. As said before, one of
Miyazaki's key traits of his auteur is his use of the environment. At that moment, Kiki tries to physically and emotionally connect with the wind to
fly. The wind is calm at first but then busts out a gust of air shooting Kiki into the sky. The incident Tombo is in makes it possible only for Kiki to
save him since no one else can reach him. Under this circumstance, the town watches in horror waiting for the boy to be saved. Then, Tombo's hand
slips from the rope of the blimp and begins to fall where Kiki saves him just time in midair. As a result, Kiki the strong female lead saves her friend
after overcoming her self–doubt. All of this took place in an ordinary town, the wind contributed in helping Kiki gain her confidence back. Which
concluded with a great original story. Overall, specific examples of Miyazaki's auteur style were seen in the climax scene of Kiki Delivery Service.

Most children adventure film nowadays like Kung Fu Panda, The Lego Movie, or Big Hero 6, only care to go from action, to action, to action. They
never really taken the time for us to see their worlds. But, what differentiate Studio Ghibli with other animation studio, is that most of the time, Ghibli's
character would rather find themselves wandering through different landscapes and long establishing shots. This can be seen in almost every Studio
Ghibli film. But, most well–known were Princess Mononoke, The Wind Rises and When Marnie Was There. The studio's dedication to the visual art
of storytelling was awe inspiring, the fact that they are willing to try to tell the story simply with images first, sort of forces them in a way to make the

And because of this, the dialogue is almost strictly for character interactions and occasionally a piece of wisdom or thought instead of exposition.
There is a lot of patients that goes into Studio Ghibli's work. In My Neighbor Totoro, the creature Totoro did not appear until 32 minutes in. Whereas
animated films like Epic and Home, just to name a few, immediately start in the middle of the action. There is not a lot of breathing room in western
animation films, at least not the kind we find in Ghibli's.
For example in one specific scene from My Neighbor Totoro, two girls, Satsuki and Mei interact with their new home for the first time. The unstable
pillar was the first thing in their house that they played with, and this simple scene, lasted for almost 50 seconds. Now, compare it with The Peanuts
Movie. On one scene, it shows the characters developed the same energy as the two girls in My Neighbor Totoro before, but the scene lasts only for 25
seconds, that the audience did not have the time to get attached to the

San Bernardino City Unified School District
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Introduction
San Bernardino City Unified School District houses one of the largest populations for students with moderate to severe disabilities within the Inland
Empire. Over the past decade San Bernardino City Unified School District (SBCUSD) has sustained an influx of students who qualify for a moderate
to severe special day classroom (SDC) setting and special education services. Effectively educating youth with moderate to severe disabilities is not a
simplex task, as it requires multifaceted skillsets involving various special education professionals. Developing and executing a service delivery model
that targets student's individual needs, while simultaneously supporting students in strides towards life long goals is crucial. Carmack Elementary is
one of fifty–two elementary schools within SBCUSD that only provides educational services to students with moderate to severe disabilities grades
kindergarten through sixth. The community surrounding Carmack Elementary has been deemed high–poverty, indicating a vast majority of students
who attend Carmack are presumed as low–income status. Lastly, a vast majority of students who attend Carmack Elementary qualify for the free and
reduced meal program offered through the district.

Hayao Miyazaki: Auteur Essay
"I never read reviews. I'm not interested. But I value a lot the reactions of the spectators."– Hayao Miyazaki.
The director is responsible for overseeing creative aspects of a film. They develop the vision for a film and carry the vision out, deciding how the
film should look. The director may also be heavily involved in the writing and editing of the film, as well as managing the script into a sequence of
shots, coordinating the actors in the film and supervising musical aspects. The Auteur Theory suggests that films contain certain characteristics or
'signatures' that reflect the director's individual style and give a film its personal and unique stamp. Hayao Miyazaki is one such auteur whose

Miyazaki's childhood was short as he was born January 5, 1941 during World War II, thus without exception, his films main characters are
children, deal with growing up and often consist of one young female lead and one young male lead. This is evident in My Neighbor Totoro
(1988) as the two main characters are young girls who, unlike adults, can see and befriend the spirits of the spirit world. In Spirited Away (2001),
the leading character Chihiro is a young girl who must deal with growing up, similarly to Kiki in Kiki's Delivery Service (1989). Princess
Mononoke (1997) also features these stock characters in the form of young San, adopted daughter of the wolf goddess Moro and Prince Ashitaka, a
young girl and boy. Hayao Miyazaki has expressed strong feelings about childhood, saying that it's a paradisiacal time when, "you're protected by your
parents and unaware of the problems around you". Miyazaki's upbringing during World War II would explain another unique mark of his films, that
being his interest in flight.
Human flight is a frequent theme in Miyazaki's animations. This theme is found in almost every film directed by him such as in Laputa: Castle in the
Sky (1986) as it is a flying metropolis and in Kiki's Delivery Service as Kiki rides her broomstick and watches dirigibles fly over her city. In Spirited
Away, Chihiro soars across the sky as she rides on Haku's back when he is in dragon form. The critically acclaimed Howl's

Hayao Miyazaki and Animated Film Essay
Getting inspired is something that can happen unexpectedly. A single thing can just set the stage for an amazing creation to come about. Much of
what people are exposed to due to the media and also literature can really affect someone's life. Hayao Miyazaki is a film director, animator,
screenwriter and also producer. He is someone who's work really changed my perspective on animation and also the conventional idea of a hero.
Miyazaki was born on January 5, 1941 in Japan. His parents were Dola and Katsuji Miyazaki. His father Katsuji Miyazaki and worked for Miyazaki

The following year Miyazaki also met Akemi Ota, an animator that then became his wife in 1968. Overall Miyazaki worked in a total of six different
animation studios, his positions varied from director to animator but his work also influenced many other directors or screenwriters within those
companies. Having grown independent from the companies he set off to start his own company known today as Studio Ghibli. Studio Ghibli was
founded in 1985. The studio was created due to a collaboration by Hayao Miyazaki, his friend Isao Takahata, and also producer Toshio Suzuki. There
furst film collaboration was done in 1984, with the film Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. Many people believe that this film is what set the
stage for Studio Ghibli to be created. Much of the studio's success has not solely been due to Miyazaki, but also because of his associates. One of
the most prominent films from the studio was directed by Isao Takahata, the film is Grave of the Fireflies, which depicts the story of orphans living in
Japan during World War II. The company is also well known for their "no
–edits" policy which basically states that the film cannot be altered when
being dubbed. However, this policy has caused many issues with American companies because some films have been Americanized or altered, which
then tends to change the message of the story and the plot. With the great success that Studio Ghibli has had Miyazaki

Spirited Away Religion
Andrew Proskin Religions 101–001 Extra Credit 3 12/8/16 Spirited Away This is a movie by the Japanese producer Hayao Miyazaki. He has written
and produced many movies that portray religion in some way. The one I chose to focus on is called Spirited away. In the movie, the Main
character is a small girl named Chihiro. The little girl ends up getting lost into a spirit world. When she goes into the spirit world her name gets
taken from her and she begins a journey to get back her name and get to her parents. At the end of the movie she does get bac to her parents but she
isn't the same she is more mature. This movie seems to have some ties to Shinto religions. Shinto is a religion that thinks that everything is
interconnected or interdependent. To experience the goodness someone must have a pure heart (korko). When people stray away from it they are
considered polluted. The bath house in the movie may be seen as symbolism for getting purification back to korko after you have been polluted. In
the movie Chihiro actually enounters a spirit in need of cleansing. It is symbolized as a dirty river type monster and is returned to a pure river
symbolizing korko.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Shinto has set conceptions of good and evil. The character no face in the movie is seen in a few different types. Once we see no face as a nice
good spirit being generous and kind. However, we also see no face as a hungry evil monster type spirit. The evilness of No face at this point comes
from the workers of the bathhouse. The workers greed is what leads to the evil showing of no face. The workers of the bathhouse keep feeding him
in hopes to gain gold in return for feeding him more. The only way to put an end to the evil of No Face is when the Chihiro refuses to take the gold
that is offered in return for the

Auteur Director Case Study
2. Make the case for either Hayao Miyazaki or Isao Takahata as an auteur director I choose the case of Hayao Miyazaki as an auteur director for
this essay. First, what is an auteur director? The word "auteur" comes from french that means "author" and the auteur theory itself is a lens or way
of looking at movies that put the director as the "author" of the movie. The Auteur Theory argues that a movie represents the director's passion and
vision; thus, movies that are directed by an auteur director will reeks of their own signature styles which can be found in repetitive and recognisable
patterns, themes, and in some cases visual (in our case is art) that will give the audience hints as who is the director of the movie. It is pretty rare to
find an auteur director these days because usually to be able to be an auteur director, a director has to have a full control, from the cast, the visual and
the music, of the the movie that they make. Most producers don't give directors that kind of full control. There's not a lot of auteur directors that make
it big in the movie industry. Think of Quentin Tarantino, Stanley Kubrick, Christopher Nolan. They are a few of the most famous auteur directors...

First and foremost is the big amount of time and effort Miyazaki spend on a project. One of the most surprising thing is that he creates his own
storyboards without any intervention from external parties. That means he can unleash 100% of his creativity to his works. Second, in addition to
creating his own storyboard, he will then review every single animation cell that come out from the storyboard. It's not a rare occurrence that he will
re–do the animation cells if he deems that the artist's work is not up to his standard and the animation cell cannot properly depict his vision4. This
way, Miyazaki has total control of all story and visual that appear in the final cut of the

Essay on Anime in America
"Anime in America"
Anime, or Japanese animation, is a style of animation most recognizable by characters with large eyes and beautifully detailed backgrounds. Once
people watch anime, they will find besides spectacular animation, anime has complex characters and deep stories, many of which teach morals and
values. Anime is very popular in Japan; it has also gained a following in America and is beginning to hit the mainstream.
Anime is gaining popularity in the United States as it is shown more on television, most Noticeably on the Sci–Fi Channel with shows such as Saturday

Akira, Urusei Yatsura 2, Project A–ko, Mononoke Hime, Galaxy Express 999, Be Forever Yamato, Laputa: Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro,
Kiki's Delivery Service, and Grave of the Fireflies. When anime is translated into English, it can be found in two forms, dubbed, where voice actors
put the words spoken into English, or subtitled, where the original dialogue is kept and the English equivalent is shown across the bottom of the
screen. Subtitled seems to keep more to what is actually being said, but some of the puns can be hard to understand while dubbed canmake the
dialogue make sense and sound funnier. In the end, it's really just a matter of preference.
What makes anime so cool? It's really hard to describe, but yet thousands of people all across the United States, who can't describe it they, attend cons
and are members of clubs.
No one can really say what it could be––the amazing detail, fantastic stories, the complex plots, or the unforgettable characters...It can be any of these.
The growing popularity of anime in America has resulted in a large number of anime clubs being founded on college campuses and increasingly at high
schools. Many clubs watch and discuss anime, produce newsletters or fanzines, have

Examples Of Animism In Spirit Away
Spirit Away is an anime style fantasy film written and directed by the celebrated artist Hayao Miyazaki. Originally released in Japan in 2001 to
great fanfare, Disney translated an English version and distributed the film to western audiences later that same year. In 2002, Spirit Away went on
to win an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, the Golden Bear Award at the International Film Festival in 2003, and has become the most
successful film in Japanese history to date. The story focuses on a young, ten year old girl named Chihiro, who in the beginning proves to be a very

Pythagoreans followed purification rituals that included extensive bathing, with well–developed rules, enabling their souls to achieve a higher rank
among the gods. Chihiro's journey of change and growth takes place in a bathhouse that caters to these gods. There is notable emphasis on the
bathing rites of passage occurring in the film and as Chihiro tends to her daily work she is often dripping wet, herself, from drawing baths and
providing towel services to the gods. The most dramatic of scenes includes an ancient stink spirit who arrives in search of its ritual cleaning. Chihiro
begins her duties only to be engulfed in the stench and mire that flow from the stink spirit and upon successfully removing a thorn from its side, the
spirit proves to be a polluted river spirit, whose trash and pollution pours into the room. Mindless waste, greed, and disregard for environment, all too

Analysis Of Kiki 's Delivery Service
Kiki's Delivery Service (1989: Hayao Miyazaki) revolves around a young girl named Kiki who leaves her home with her talking cat familiar Jiji in
order to hone her skills as a witch, but has difficulties to find her place in a new town while running an air courier service. Overall the movie focuses
on tradition vs. modernity as well as the problems a young person can face while first living independently. I will be analysing the mise–en–scene and
cinematography in the scene when Kiki first arrives in the town that she will call home. The scene starts with an over the shoulder establishing shot
of the town that Kiki will be staying in, this is done to give the audience an idea about the size of the place and also allows us to see the town from
Kiki's perspective – imposing but exciting. After this we see a low angle sot looking up at Kiki as she flies over the ocean, she is laughing and
yelling while flying her broom which connotates that she is having fun, this is done to create a contrast later in the scene where she is flying very
formally to try and make a good impression. Another reason the ocean is used in this part is that the colour blue is used to represent calmness and
serenity. Moreover, as with most Miyazaki movies flight represents the greatest form of freedom, therefore the shots of Kiki flying over the ocean
while enjoying herself is used as a contrast to later in the movie when Kiki feeling trapped by her own feeling of inadequacy. In addition, a crabbing

Chihiro's Response To Sociology
Perhaps the most obvious example of change as a positive influence in the film can be observed in Chihiro's maturation. Prior to entering the spirit
realm, Chihiro behaves as a typical, stubborn child unwilling to accept change; this can be observed in the way she responds to seeing her new
school as she and her parents drive into town: sticking out her tongue as she says, "It's gonna stink. I liked my old school." During the same scene,
Chihiro's responses to her parents even slightly suggest that she is a bit spoiled as she complains how "depressing" it is that this is the first time she
has gotten a bouquet of flowers and it's a "goodbye present." When her mother reminds her that her father had gotten a rose for her birthday before,

Analysis Of The Film ' The Tale Of The White Serpent '
Ever since watching Hayao Miyazaki's film, 'Spirited Away', I was enamoured with the art style aesthetics, smooth animation and storytelling. His
work in Studio Ghibli had played a major part in my desire to work in animation and to create artistic and compelling stories. But it's not just me he has
influenced and inspired, and it's in this essay that I will discuss how this illustrious individual has influenced and placed his mark in the animation
world.
Miyazaki had always had an interest in drawing in his youth. Though his fascination with animation had started during his high school years when he
first watched the feature–length anime film, 'The Tale of the White Serpent'. And after joining a children 's literature club in college, his interest only
grew. It was in 1963 after completing his degrees, that Miyazaki decided to pursue animation as a career and joined Toei Animation. There, he learned
the basic fundamentals of animation and met up with his future collaborators, associates and even his future wife.
He started off drawing key frames in the animations he worked on, making sure that the figures moved and transitioned smoothly. His skill and
determination in creating such free–flow work had impressed his higher ups, and he was soon moved up from being an in–between artist, to becoming
heavily involved with the Animators Union. That's where he would eventually work alongside many other forward–thinking and progressive animators

delivery platform and see if the eating habit in Taiwan can perhaps be slightly altered more towards that of foreign country when considering using this
new type of service. The most notable two competitors are Foodpanda and Ubereats, both of twhich shares many similarity with a few critical
differences in their operations. Foodpanda provides food delivery service for many restaurants that don't have one. Since the company started out with

Past that point however, once customers choose the restaurants all the various options regarding food order are present for one to customize their

they confirm their orders. The quality of Foodpanda's system is indeed a clear advantage and the result of constant improving and iteration. For the
delivery side, Foodpanda employed their own delivery team, with delivery agents transporting food stored in Foodpanda's own designed transport bags.
This marks the clear the difference between Foodpanda and Ubereats. Ubereat are near identical to Foodpanda with the service it provided:

Many people may have a specific style in which they like to dress. A woman might have a signature lipstick she enjoys wearing, a man might have a
distinct cologne that stands out from the rest. Movies are not too far apart in comparison. Sometimes people find films more enjoyable than others,
and often do not realize they come from the same director. The Auteur theory is a that defines the director as the sole author of the entire film, adding
his or her own personal style. When it comes to the world of animation, director Hayao Miyazaki is a pioneer in auteur. His specific directorial style is
seen in many of his films in which he manages to make films enjoyable to adults of all ages. Kiki's Delivery Service was one of director Miyazaki's first
major films. During the climax of the film Kiki's Delivery Service, director Hayao Miyazaki illustrates his signature auteur style that makes his movies
distinguished and enjoyable.
There is a significant pattern that Hayao Miyazaki has in most of his animated films that identify his style different from western directors. First,
Miyazaki is a director that prefers hand–drawn animation to computerized animation. Other important details he demonstrates in his films are strong
female leads, original stories, and ordinary characters. In addition, Miyazaki likes to employ the environment as an important factor in his films. Kiki's
Delivery Service exhibits these specific traits that reveal Miyazaki

Analyzing Hayao Miyazaki's Coming Of Age Film
When reaching a certain age young adults are expected to leave home and venture out into the world on their own. After living with family for so
long, figuring out what to do to be able adjust to the next stages of life becomes a difficult challenge. Many young adults become thrilled at the idea of
venturing out into the world and not having parents telling them what to do. That is only the beginning of the journey. The real question is how does
leaving home affect a person psychologically.
Departing from home and going into an unfamiliar new side of the world is both an exciting and stressful experience. In this paper I will talk about
this topic using Hayao Miyazaki's coming of age film, Kiki's Delivery Service. Obstacles that come with leaving ... Show more content on

The movie takes place in a fictional city called Kokiro, and follows a thirteen year old young female witch named, Kiki. She encounters many
emotional obstacles while trying fit in with others when its time for her to leave home for a year to begin training to find out what she can do in the
world. After leaving home she arrives in a large city, being the only witch in the city she finds it hard to fit in with the citizens after seeing them
avoid her when she first arrived. Since she only knew how to fly she started her own air courier service to support herself. Throughout the movie
she begins to lose confidence in her skills and looks resulting in her loosing the ability to fly and talk to her confidant, Jiji. Then, she falls into
depression. Kikis friend, a painter named, Ursula, invites Kiki to hang out in her forest cottage and compares her loss of magic to a form of artist
block. Kiki gets an order from an old customer which turns out to be for her. The lady made Kiki a cake in appreciation for her help with an earlier
delivery and Kiki soon regains her ability to

Spirited Away : Film Directed By Hayao Miyazaki Essay
Spirited Away is film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. The messages contained within Spirited Away are almost entirely steeped in symbolism.
On the surface, the film can be seen as young girl that struggles through a terrifying situation while trying to maintain and develop her personal identity.
This is indeed the story I believe Hayao Miyazaki intended to tell. However, there is symbolic representation behind almost every single character and
object of the film. There are smaller metaphors contained inside the larger allegory. Admittedly, a lot of the base ideas I will explore in the proceeding
text is not my own. However, I will use my own observations to expand upon this third–party's analysis, and make the argument my own. Other
students so far have presented the symbolism of Spirited Awayas portraying Miyazaki's criticism of Japanese culture during the 80s. This very well
may be, and most likely is, the source material for the imagery of the film. However, my analysis is that of a much broader, general viewpoint of our
lives as individuals. First, I want to establish that the larger allegory is the films plot. A young girl finding her identity through displays of hardship
with hints of environmentalism and social problems. I believe hidden within this allegory is the imagery that the setting and characters are all smaller
representations that build into the larger symbols that establish to film's general plot. The Ghost Town can be seen as our daily lives.

The Characteristics Of Disney And Other Disney Princesses '
Another interesting way Disney and Studio Ghibli codes their characters are possessing them with either "feminine" or "masculine" traits. Traditional
"feminine" traits include being easily hurt emotionally, verbal, dependent, and non–aggressive. "Masculine" traits are defined as aggressive,
independent, and active. Ariel and other Disney Princesses typically fall into the feminine traits– throughout the film, Ariel cries and is extremely
emotional, dramatically throwing herself down and sobbing over her conflicts. She is also extremely talkative, unlike her father, who is more stoic and
tough. Ariel doesn't seem to possess any traditional masculine traits, and is mostly seen as very dependent on her relationship with her love interest for
happiness. Meanwhile, Kiki is described as both traditionally masculine and feminine– and this is seen as a good thing. The article "Miyazaki's
Heroines" notes that while Kiki longs for "traditionally feminine" things, like a prettier dress to wear, this is not seen as a negative quality, just as
something that's typical for a teenage girl to think. Overall, Kiki possesses a strong balance of traits that are both traditionally seen as masculine and
feminine. While she sometimes gets emotional, it's due to the fact that she's away from home for the first time and facing the challenges of growing
up. She is also seen as extremely independent, and faces such tasks such as finding a place to live and getting a job at a very young age. The

Spirited Away Sociology
Spirited away is a Japanese animated movie based upon Japanese folklore regarding Kamikakushi (Spirited Away). This particular legend is very
ancient, dating back to prehistorical Jomon Japan – around 2,300 years ago; it was derived upon frequent disappearance of children in premodern
Japan, who often reappears several days after in a temple or shrine. It is believed that an infuriated god in the mountain has abducted, hidden, and
enslaved the children.
This folklore was adapted to create a modern fiction, Spirited Away. In this film, the primary protagonist, Chihiro, ends up being "Spirited Away" from
the real world to the spirit realm. The director of this film, Miyazaki Hayao, brilliantly denounces many contemporary controversial topics: ... Show

Especially during work hours, the workplace is constantly surveyed by Yubaba's magic. There are also spies amongst the laborers that report back to
Yubaba daily of any misconduct committed by the laborers.
A far more extreme form of labor control is presented in this film. Yubaba binds the employees under contract that allows her to take their life away
if she finds their work capability unsatisfactory. This is shown when the boiler man yells at his underling that if they do not work, they will be turned
into pile of ashes. Yubaba is the symbol of bourgeoisie and workers are the symbol of proletariat; this is a perfect signifier of class–based system.
Throughout this film, the girl's struggle from alienation is depicted in detail. Chihiro had to adjust to the spiritual world's common sense,
discrimination, manners, labor market, and others, which differentiated significantly from the one's she is used to in reality. The bathhouse mainly
revolves around interactive service work and physical labor; women mainly handles the aesthetic labor and men handles the physical labor. Although
Chihiro is a ten–years–old girl, she was forced to handle hard physical labor with no assistance or guidance from other employees. The special
division of labor was manifested due to her being the only human in the workplace. Other workers, who were miscellaneous spirits and supernatural
beings, distasted Chihiro for being a

Hayao Miyazaki And Japanese Animation Essay

  • 1. Hayao Miyazaki and Japanese Animation Essay Hayao Miyazaki Hayao Miyazaki has been revolutionary in Japanese animation. A mangaka (an artist/writer/creator of manga, Japanese comics), an animator, and storyteller, Miyazaki has not only been very successful in his work, well known and loved by many, but has changed the world of anime with his unique style of drawing. Through passion and hard work, Miyazaki has become one of the most successful animators in all of Japan. Miyazaki was born on January 5th, 1941, in Tokyo, Japan (MUBI.com). His father, Katsuji Miyazaki, was the director and owner of their family's firm, Miyazaki Airplane, that made parts for Zero fighter planes. His father's job contributed to his fascination with flying, and accurately depicting it in his animation... While animation was regaining its popularity in the postwar years, he saw Legend of the White Serpent by Taji Yabushita, the first Japanese colour animated movie, and he absolutely fell in love with the feature. After graduating from Toyotama High School (1959) he went on to enroll in Gakushuin University, where he studied political science and economics. While he was there, he studied European childrens books and comics after joining a children's literature research society, things by authors like Rosemary Sutcliff and Antoine du Saint–Exupery. In 1963, he finally graduated with a degree in political science and economics, but instead of moving into the fields of politics or finance, he promptly went to get a job at the animation studio of Toei Company, Toei Cine, where he had an apprenticeship before he was allowed to work as an entry–level in–betweener on Watchdog Woof–Woof and Wolf Boy Ken (an in–betweener takes the first and last frames of the action or movement drawn by the animator and creates the flow, the series of picutres/sketches in between the two to connect them and complete the movement or action). He was a hard, dedicated worker, with a passion for what he does, and so he quickly climbed up to positions with more and more responsibility in the animation industry. Wolf ... While visiting Kiki sees on her client's television that her friend Tombo is hanging off a blimp that is heading straight into town. Imminently, Kiki then rushes to her friend's aid even though she has lost her ability to fly. So, with a sense of purpose, Kiki takes a broom from a man in the middle of town and concentrates extremely hard to fly again. As said before, one of Miyazaki's key traits of his auteur is his use of the environment. At that moment, Kiki tries to physically and emotionally connect with the wind to fly. The wind is calm at first but then busts out a gust of air shooting Kiki into the sky. The incident Tombo is in makes it possible only for Kiki to save him since no one else can reach him. Under this circumstance, the town watches in horror waiting for the boy to be saved. Then, Tombo's hand slips from the rope of the blimp and begins to fall where Kiki saves him just time in midair. As a result, Kiki the strong female lead saves her friend after overcoming her self–doubt. All of this took place in an ordinary town, the wind contributed in helping Kiki gain her confidence back. Most children adventure film nowadays like Kung Fu Panda, The Lego Movie, or Big Hero 6, only care to go from action, to action, to action. They never really taken the time for us to see their worlds. But, what differentiate Studio Ghibli with other animation studio, is that most of the time, Ghibli's character would rather find themselves wandering through different landscapes and long establishing shots. This can be seen in almost every Studio Ghibli film. But, most well–known were Princess Mononoke, The Wind Rises and When Marnie Was There. Whereas animated films like Epic and Home, just to name a few, immediately start in the middle of the action. There is not a lot of breathing room in western animation films, at least not the kind we find in Ghibli's. • 5. Hayao Miyazaki: Auteur Essay "I never read reviews. I'm not interested. But I value a lot the reactions of the spectators."– Hayao Miyazaki. The director is responsible for overseeing creative aspects of a film. They develop the vision for a film and carry the vision out, deciding how the film should look. The director may also be heavily involved in the writing and editing of the film, as well as managing the script into a sequence of shots, coordinating the actors in the film and supervising musical aspects. The Auteur Theory suggests that films contain certain characteristics or 'signatures' that reflect the director's individual style and give a film its personal and unique stamp. Miyazaki's childhood was short as he was born January 5, 1941 during World War II, thus without exception, his films main characters are children, deal with growing up and often consist of one young female lead and one young male lead. This is evident in My Neighbor Totoro (1988) as the two main characters are young girls who, unlike adults, can see and befriend the spirits of the spirit world. In Spirited Away (2001), the leading character Chihiro is a young girl who must deal with growing up, similarly to Kiki in Kiki's Delivery Service (1989). Princess Mononoke (1997) also features these stock characters in the form of young San, adopted daughter of the wolf goddess Moro and Prince Ashitaka, a young girl and boy. Hayao Miyazaki has expressed strong feelings about childhood, saying that it's a paradisiacal time when, "you're protected by your parents and unaware of the problems around you". Miyazaki's upbringing during World War II would explain another unique mark of his films, that being his interest in flight. Human flight is a frequent theme in Miyazaki's animations. This theme is found in almost every film directed by him such as in Laputa: Castle in the Sky (1986) as it is a flying metropolis and in Kiki's Delivery Service as Kiki rides her broomstick and watches dirigibles fly over her city. In Spirited Away, Chihiro soars across the sky as she rides on Haku's back when he is in dragon form. The critically acclaimed Howl's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He has written and produced many movies that portray religion in some way. The one I chose to focus on is called Spirited away. In the movie, the Main character is a small girl named Chihiro. The little girl ends up getting lost into a spirit world. When she goes into the spirit world her name gets taken from her and she begins a journey to get back her name and get to her parents. At the end of the movie she does get bac to her parents but she isn't the same she is more mature. This movie seems to have some ties to Shinto religions. Shinto is a religion that thinks that everything is interconnected or interdependent. To experience the goodness someone must have a pure heart (korko). When people stray away from it they are considered polluted. The bath house in the movie may be seen as symbolism for getting purification back to korko after you have been polluted. • 12. Auteur Director Case Study 2. Make the case for either Hayao Miyazaki or Isao Takahata as an auteur director I choose the case of Hayao Miyazaki as an auteur director for this essay. First, what is an auteur director? The word "auteur" comes from french that means "author" and the auteur theory itself is a lens or way of looking at movies that put the director as the "author" of the movie. The Auteur Theory argues that a movie represents the director's passion and vision; thus, movies that are directed by an auteur director will reeks of their own signature styles which can be found in repetitive and recognisable patterns, themes, and in some cases visual (in our case is art) that will give the audience hints as who is the director of the movie. It is pretty rare to find an auteur director these days because usually to be able to be an auteur director, a director has to have a full control, from the cast, the visual and the music, of the the movie that they make. Most producers don't give directors that kind of full control. There's not a lot of auteur directors that make it big in the movie industry. Overall the movie focuses on tradition vs. modernity as well as the problems a young person can face while first living independently. I will be analysing the mise–en–scene and cinematography in the scene when Kiki first arrives in the town that she will call home. The scene starts with an over the shoulder establishing shot of the town that Kiki will be staying in, this is done to give the audience an idea about the size of the place and also allows us to see the town from Kiki's perspective – imposing but exciting. After this we see a low angle sot looking up at Kiki as she flies over the ocean, she is laughing and yelling while flying her broom which connotates that she is having fun, this is done to create a contrast later in the scene where she is flying very formally to try and make a good impression. Another reason the ocean is used in this part is that the colour blue is used to represent calmness and serenity. Moreover, as with most Miyazaki movies flight represents the greatest form of freedom, therefore the shots of Kiki flying over the ocean while enjoying herself is used as a contrast to later in the movie when Kiki feeling trapped by her own feeling of inadequacy. In addition, a crabbing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Miyazaki had always had an interest in drawing in his youth. Though his fascination with animation had started during his high school years when he first watched the feature–length anime film, 'The Tale of the White Serpent'. And after joining a children 's literature club in college, his interest only grew. It was in 1963 after completing his degrees, that Miyazaki decided to pursue animation as a career and joined Toei Animation. There, he learned the basic fundamentals of animation and met up with his future collaborators, associates and even his future wife. He started off drawing key frames in the animations he worked on, making sure that the figures moved and transitioned smoothly. His skill and determination in creating such free–flow work had impressed his higher ups, and he was soon moved up from being an in–between artist, to becoming heavily involved with the Animators Union. The messages contained within Spirited Away are almost entirely steeped in symbolism. On the surface, the film can be seen as young girl that struggles through a terrifying situation while trying to maintain and develop her personal identity. This is indeed the story I believe Hayao Miyazaki intended to tell. However, there is symbolic representation behind almost every single character and object of the film. There are smaller metaphors contained inside the larger allegory. Admittedly, a lot of the base ideas I will explore in the proceeding text is not my own. However, I will use my own observations to expand upon this third–party's analysis, and make the argument my own. Other students so far have presented the symbolism of Spirited Awayas portraying Miyazaki's criticism of Japanese culture during the 80s. This very well may be, and most likely is, the source material for the imagery of the film. However, my analysis is that of a much broader, general viewpoint of our lives as individuals. First, I want to establish that the larger allegory is the films plot. A young girl finding her identity through displays of hardship with hints of environmentalism and social problems. I believe hidden within this allegory is the imagery that the setting and characters are all smaller representations that build into the larger symbols that establish to film's general plot. • 25. The Characteristics Of Disney And Other Disney Princesses ' Another interesting way Disney and Studio Ghibli codes their characters are possessing them with either "feminine" or "masculine" traits. Traditional "feminine" traits include being easily hurt emotionally, verbal, dependent, and non–aggressive. "Masculine" traits are defined as aggressive, independent, and active. Ariel and other Disney Princesses typically fall into the feminine traits– throughout the film, Ariel cries and is extremely emotional, dramatically throwing herself down and sobbing over her conflicts. She is also extremely talkative, unlike her father, who is more stoic and tough. Ariel doesn't seem to possess any traditional masculine traits, and is mostly seen as very dependent on her relationship with her love interest for happiness. Meanwhile, Kiki is described as both traditionally masculine and feminine– and this is seen as a good thing. The article "Miyazaki's Heroines" notes that while Kiki longs for "traditionally feminine" things, like a prettier dress to wear, this is not seen as a negative quality, just as something that's typical for a teenage girl to think. Overall, Kiki possesses a strong balance of traits that are both traditionally seen as masculine and feminine. While she sometimes gets emotional, it's due to the fact that she's away from home for the first time and facing the challenges of growing up. She is also seen as extremely independent, and faces such tasks such as finding a place to live and getting a job at a very young age. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
