On My Way
René Descartes was a famous French mathematician, scientist, and philosopher. He was arguably
known as the "Father of Modern Philosophy." Descartes published many works of mathematics and
philosophy throughout his life. In one of his most important works, Meditations on First Philosophy,
he added a number of arguments for and against skepticism. Skepticism is the doubt about the truth
of something and that absolute knowledge is not possible. Like past famous philosophers before
him, Plato and Parmenides, Descartes believed that "evidence from the senses was inadequate to
prove the kind of justification required for a claim of knowledge."
In the first of Rene Descartes Meditations, he provided arguments for the skeptical position. He ...

The method of hyperbolical doubt, also known as methodic doubt, is a methodical process of being
skeptical about the truth of one's belief. According to the article "Descartes' Epistemology,"
Hyperbolical Doubt is perceived to mean that one applies doubt to all candidates of knowledge.
However, Descartes sees hyperbolical doubt as this: when one decides to doubt their knowledge,
one must apply their doubt to all candidates collectively and start at the foundation. As the phrase
goes, "one bad apple can spoil a bunch," one false piece of knowledge can cause an entire belief to
collapse. René Descartes describes three skeptical arguments in Meditation I. The first argument is
about how one cannot rely solely on senses for knowledge because senses can be deceiving. One
often makes decisions and judgments based on what one sees, hears, feels, smells, and so forth;
therefore, when one experiences some form of sensory illusion, their judgment is impaired and the
information can possibly be false. For example, a person can be driving on a highway on a
scorching hot summer day and be absolutely certain that he or she sees a puddle of water on the
road ahead. However, the closer they get to the "puddle of water," they quickly realize that it was an
illusion of the sun. Their eyes deceived them and the knowledge which they

According to the International Association for the Study of Dreams, a nightmare is a terrifying or
unpleasant dream. Most commonly nightmares are associated with fear and anxiety.
b. Nightmares can have various causes. One of the more common causes of nightmares is the
consumption or withdrawal from drugs/medicine. Illness can also cause nightmare.
c. Most nightmares occur after a traumatic event such as, accidents, surgery, death, assault, etc. They
can also be triggered by stress.
Transition Sentence: There are many other types of dreams (lucid dreams, day dreams, recurring
dreams, etc.) but nightmares and prophetic dreams are the most commonly remembered dreams.
Conclusion: Conclusion to Introduction: So, even though we might not remember our dreams, we

Great Gatsby: the Immoral 20s
The Immoral Twenties The 1920s gained its nickname, The Roaring Twenties from its wild and
carefree lifestyle. The extensive wealth of the time filled most nights with parties, dancing, crazy
antics, and illegal alcohol. F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel, The Great Gatsby, encompassed all of the
aspects listed above. Not only did the book express the exciting side of the Twenties, it also
expressed lack of morality of the time. According to The Great Gatsby, this lack of morality
stemmed from the focus on material items, drinking, and dreaming. Everyone enjoys material
things, whether they want a brand new car or even a phone; these items do not provide any necessity
for survival, yet they make people's lives much easier, and even more ... Show more content on

As soon as she met up with Tom "she bought a copy of Town Tattle and a moving picture magazine,
and in the stations drug–store some cold cream and a small flask of perfume" (Fitzgerald 26), in a
desperate attempt of living her dream. Her dream stemmed from immoral ways; Tom had lots of
money, and was willing to spend it on Myrtle, yet only for his own adulterous motives. Dreams stem
the worst kind of immoralities because the best intentions can lead to the worst outcomes, so many
dreamers do not realize their mistakes. The Roaring Twenties, according to Fitzgerald lacked morals
stemming from high aspirations, materialism and liquor. While morality may seem easily
discernable many people still act immorally. These bases of impurities still exist today, and stem the
same results. For the betterment of the public, one should be careful in what they do; many other
examples provide bases for immorality. Works Cited Fitzgerald, F. Scott. The Great Gatsby. New

Lucid Dreams : A Lucid Dream
Lucid Dreaming A lucid dream is one in which the person dreaming knows that he or she is in a
dream, does not wake from it, and feels in control of what is happening in the dream. Researcher
Paul Tholey experimented with the induction of lucid dreams in experimental subjects in the 1980s,
and wrote that he developed techniques for inducing lucid dreams that had first been tried on
himself in 1959 (Tholey 875). One of these techniques was called the "reflection technique, and his
experimental subjects were able to induce the state of lucidity in their dreams (Tholey 876). The
reflection technique basically involved the subject asking him or herself, while awake, if he or she
was dreaming; then, it was hoped, the person would be able to ask him or herself the same thing
while asleep in a dream, and thus become aware. By using his techniques, Dr. Tholey was able to
test several hypotheses concerning the content of dreams and the eye movements that occur during
the dreams. Tholey continued his experiments, and in 1989 published research in which he had
investigated the cognitive tasks that characters in a lucid dream could perform (Tholey 567).
Tholey's idea was not that the dream characters themselves were independent of the dreamer, but
that they came from parts of the brain of the dreamer. He thought that the brain processes that were
responsible for dream events were those that were related to cognitive and affective memory
processes, and might lead to separate

Jungian Psychotherapist Carder Stout Analysis
Have you been puzzled by your dreams lately? You certainly aren't alone, as millions of people
around the world strive to learn what their nighttime adventures are trying to tell them.
Recently, The Huffington Post sat down with Jungian psychotherapist Carder Stout to get some
insight to the meaning of some of the most common dream scenario. Here's what we learned:
Being pregnant: According to Stout, this is a symbol of new energy, new ideas or a new life. You
may be going in a new direction or transforming a significant aspect of your life.
Your ex: This doesn't mean you want to get back together. When you dream about a specific person,
their presence suggests that the person is representing a particular aspect of yourself. Consider

Descartes 'Dreaming Argument'
The dreaming argument
The dream argument claims that the act of dreaming provides an intuitive evidence that cannot be
distinguished from those that our senses give us when we are in the waking state, and for this
reason, we cannot give full credit to the senses we use to distinguish reality from illusion.
Consequently, any experience from our senses should at least be considered carefully and rigorously
tested to determine if it really refers to reality. In this essay, I will argue that Descartes's Dream
Argument proves that we cannot gain knowledge through the senses because senses are often
deceiving and cannot be fully trusted. Our senses are our primary way of interacting with the world,
they give us a raw information about what is present ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unless he could be absolutely certain of something he would refuse to accept it as a basis for true
knowledge. And that is precisely the case; the grass is not green, the color is only an effect of light
on our sensory system; the color is relative to our perceptual system. Other species perceive the
world differently. The sky is not blue, the blue color is not his, and it is only a second quality,
resulting from the presence of water vapor in the atmosphere, which refracts sunlight. When I
perceive an object, I believe it is a real object because of my perception; while when I imagine that I
alone build an image, the perception could be similar to the imagination. Let us remember that
Descartes does not convince us that we live in a world of illusion; skepticism is for him a stage. But
the possibility of this illusion questions the reliability of sensitive knowledge as a whole including
sensations that relate to closer objects. The dream argument is remarkable because it calls into
question the sensible knowledge as a whole, even in the most everyday situations. And one cannot
dismiss the argument as madness; because the dream is a normal hallucination. Descartes's
argument may seem extravagant, but can you prove that you do not dream forever? If this is not

The Pros And Cons Of Lucid Dreaming
In 1911 the term, "Lucid Dreaming" was first used by a Dutch psychiatrist named Frederick Van
Eden. He described it as a person sleeping but taking on an active role. Lucid dreaming is actually
defined as a dream where the person dreaming is aware they're dreaming and have somewhat
control over the characters and narrators and their role in the dream. Over the course of this
document the basics of lucid dreaming and the knowledge we have of it will be covered, as well as
the senses it effects and how we perceive it.
Now for the most part everyone knows the five senses; sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch. We all
have these, and our perception is how we react to these senses. Some people are more prone to
senses than others and that is what makes all of us unique. Now I know what you're thinking; "How
can you have any of these senses in reality if you're dreaming?" and that's a fair question. But lucid
dreaming isn't just "dreaming" it's taking control of your ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

you a more vivid idea of what lucid dreaming is or a scenario of a lucid dream would be, think or

yourself in that same dream, except in this dream you can fly or walk on water, you're capable of

while also being able to smell the freshly cut grass. Throughout this whole thing you are actually

Thomas Descartes 's ' Dream Argument ' And ' The Dream...
In the First Meditation Descartes famously presented his 'dream argument' or 'dream paradox' in
which he questions how we can distinguish between dreams and waking life. In this essay, I will
explore various responses to the argument such as Hobbes and Locke and how I think Descartes
would dismiss these arguments. I will finally present my own criticism alongside the work of
Austin, Simpson and Ryle in order to illustrate the inconsistency of Descartes claims. In order to
deconstruct the dream paradox I will appeal to one of the three common methods of solving
paradoxes; denying a premise, particularly the first premise as this results in the collapse of the
remaining conditional premises. I will ultimately show that the dream argument is a paradox and
how this causes the dream argument to fail.
Descartes aim throughout the first segment of his Meditations to overthrow existing foundations of
knowledge and encourages readers to remove prior knowledge and prejudices in order to fully
accept the new foundations which he aims to establish. The method of doubt is used to find beliefs
that can serve as a new foundation for knowledge. Only beliefs that are certain, immune from doubt,
can perform this function. Descartes argued that what we believe on the basis of the senses cannot
meet the standard. Consequently, he concluded, we do not know anything on the basis of our senses
and the dream argument is formed.
The 'dream argument' results from a realization by Descartes that he

Am I Dreaming: How Our Brains Really Work Essay
Am I Dreaming? I. I awoke from a dream. A dream so realistic that I had no idea if it was real or
fake. I had to grasp reality, as my alarm clock buzzed with anger as if it was mad as well, for it

yelling at me to get ready for school was not helping. I had to make a choice. A choice of life or
death. A choice of , was it true or not, did my best friend get dumped by her boyfriend of two years

to an end we both got up and walked out together down the hallway toward one locker where I
knew I would get some answers, Jennifer's locker. She was standing there by herself with nothing
but a smile on her face and books in her hand. We both walked up to her and gave her a hug that
confused the crap out of her. Then next thing I knew Rebekah began to say, "are you okay?" and
"how did it happen?" which confused her even more. It was my turn to chime in and that's when I
said, "I'm sorry about you and Cameron. He's a jerk for breaking up with you." She didn't say
anything just looked at us like we were crazy... which we kind of were. After a few minutes had
passed she busted out laughing and said that she and Cameron didn't break up and that they were
doing fine. Relief flooded through my whole body and we all began laughing as we walked down
the hallway together to our next class and that's when I discovered that this whole day I was living
in was dream. A dream of heartbreak. II. Our brain is a magnificent tool, it can do many things but
one thing that fascinates me the most are dreams. Every night we go to bed in hopes of meeting our

Reasons Why Aboriginal People Should Respect Aboriginal...
Non–Aboriginal people should respect Aboriginal people. On 26 October 2019 Uluru climbing will
be prohibited. This significant decision shows respect to the Aboriginal culture that consider Uluru a
sacred place. Banning the climb is necessary even if the number of visitors who decide to climb the
rock is dropping considerably. In 1990, 74% of the tourists climbed Uluru, but now the new kinds of
experience that involve people deeply in the indigenous culture have reduced this percentage. In
2015, only 16.2% visitors climbed to the top, and the others chosen to respect the indigenous
tradition (Uluru climbs will be banned from October 2019 after unanimous board decision to 'close
the playground', 2017). There are several reasons to respect Aboriginal people: the deeper respect
that they have to the land, they are the most ancient culture survived until now, and the international
visitors more and more prefer the genuine contact with an indigenous experience. The first reason
why non–Aboriginal people should respect Aboriginal people is, the deeper respect that they have to
the land. Aboriginal people said that the land and the people are one, and the life depends on the
reciprocal respect. Also, Aboriginal people honor the land, because it supplies food, water and other
assets necessary for life. They don't own the land, because the land is for everyone. The land is their
life, and when people destroy, disrespect or damage the land or their sacred place, they eradicate

Dreaming from Various Sources
The objective of this paper is to explore many articles covering the purpose of dreaming from
various sources. The articles, however, may vary from researcher to researcher. As such, this paper
will also detail the different theories about the usefulness of dreams. This paper will also take time
to explain what a dream is, when dreams happen, and what their potential purposes may be. To start
this paper, we first must understand what a dream is. According to the Merriam–Webster dictionary,
a dream is "a series of thoughts, images, or emotions occurring during sleep". Dreams take the
things we see during our waking hours and translate them into unique, sometimes horrifying, and
possibly meaningful ways. Dreams could also be representations of subconscious feelings and
desires, bubbling up from deep within our psyche. However, the actual purpose of dreams remains a
mystery, even to today's foremost experts on this subject. Sigmund Freud attempted to understand
what dreams meant; he thought that dreams were safeguards attempt deeper and darker desires from
the human mind's id. Decades later, scientist John Allan Hobson theorized that dreams are a result of
the brain attempting to interpret random electrical impulses within the brain, producing often
elaborate and vivid details and plots while we sleep. Other research suggests that dreams are the
brain's unique way of organizing disparate information; a kind of nightly mental reformatting. The
average Joe takes a

Consciousness : A Complex Theory Of Thought And Or State
Consciousness is a complex theory of thought and/or state. Throughout the semester I altered my
consciousness, or awareness of consciousness, by paying attention and changing certain "default"
consciousness aspects. The semester projects and recordings allowed me to focus on different facets
of my own consciousness day–to–day and throughout each day. By having different projects
through the semester, I was able to restart my awareness of my "normal" consciousness and bring it
to the forefront of my mind. I realized multiple things through this exercise, consciousness is largely
based on perspective, consciousness is constantly flowing and moving, and consciousness is.... I
will be discussing three key insights defining consciousness: as a state(s), phenomenon, and
developmental processes. Consciousness as states can be compared to a flowing motion, it is not
fixed. "Time, space, and body sense are the framework that give meaning to waking experience"–
10.2 (week 10 Phenomenological and Physiological Investigations). States of consciousness vary
along the lines of waking, dreaming, and deep dreaming. Based on Wilber's theory in, States and
Stages, stages people go through intermingle with with states. Stages are typically associated with
age, a child is likely to be in the "Magical and Animistic" stage and believe in "mystical signs," like
having an imaginary friends, with great focus on "safe clans, nests, and powerful elders". A
developing child who has aged and progressed

Why Do Lucid Dreams Exist
There are several theories as to why we dream. One theory is that dreams work with sleep to help
the brain sort through everything it collects during the waking hours. Everyone dreams during sleep,
but not everyone can recall the mental escapade the next day, scientist aren't sure why some people
remember more than others. "in every sleep stage, there's some kind of subjective experience," said
Michael schredl, a researcher in the sleep laboratory at the Central Institute of Mental Health in
Mannheim, Germany, and an expert on dream recall. The origin of dreams is something that can be
defined in 3 ways, physiologically, scientifically or theoretically.

An Analysis Of Anthony Eaton's A New Kind Of Dreaming
Anthony Eaton's a new kind of dreaming (2001) is a mystery novel about the nature of corruption as
it lurks in the town of Port Barren and a young boy's journey to reveal a dark and buried secret
within the town. Eaton has used a variety of literary techniques such as a third–person limited point
of view, setting, characterisation and imagery to position the reader to respond to the text's
characters with a specific moral mind–set. Ultimately, Eaton has used a carefully constructed the
characters in a new kind of dreaming, to facilitate an empathy for those that suffer from injustice
and corruption within society.

The reader's first introduction to Butcher is crucial in the author's construction of his character.
Immediately, the characterisation of Butcher as a villain is apparent as "With no warning, his hand
shot out and grabbed Jamie's throat, the grip instant and vice–like...". This characterisation of
Butcher (what he says and does) effects the way the reader responds to him and the corruption and
violence that he represents. Jamie has done nothing to provoke Butcher, yet is treated with hostility
from the very first interaction between the two characters, as proved by the "vice–like" nature of the
grip. Another thing that uncovers the traits of a character is what they say. Butcher uses threatening
language throughout a new kind of dreaming, such as when he says "One wrong move, son, and
your brains are all over that wall" before handcuffing and injuring Jamie. In conclusion, the actions
and dialogue of Butcher is a technique of characterisation that Eaton uses to position readers to
respond to his antagonistic character and the theme of corruption with distaste, simultaneously
advancing the reader's empathy for

John Locke Dream Skepticism
Dream Skepticism has been debated largely since Descartes' projection of those ideas. Descartes
believed many irrational thoughts in relation to dreaming, which proposed ideas that nobody at his
time had ever seen before. Descartes' challenging of the traditional ideas and proposing new ones in
which challenged the minds of the individuals, as well as trying to convince the masses that
dreaming had some sort of value for an individual that would carry on into his conscious world.
Throughout these different ideas lied his main notion: the dreams produced in the human brain
while unconscious are not false or fiction, rather, they present the truths that lie in our very minds
and therefor should hold value to the dreamer himself. Descartes believed ... Show more content on

John Locke refutes Descartes' theory in his Essay Containing Human Understanding. Throughout
this essay, he once again describes the huge distinctions between dreams and reality. In order to give
a better understanding of how the two differ, Locke uses an obvious example of acute pain, such as
being set on fire. Studying Locke and his refuting theory about dreaming in relation to Descartes,
the journal writes, "I believe he [someone like Descartes] will allow a very manifest difference
between dreaming of being in the Fire, and being actually in it. It is important to emphasize that
Locke's example is one of physical pain, as nightmares involving mental pain, such as anxiety,
shame or fear, are commonplace. Locke is saying that the actual physical sensation of pain, at least
in its more extreme forms, is not something that we could have when asleep and dreaming." (Hill,
2004) Locke's use of physical pain as such is extreme but gets the point across: what we are capable
of living through we are capable of dreaming, but dreaming about being set on fire does not hold
any significance in that the person is dreaming and they are not experiencing real pain. As opposed
to dreaming, if one was to be set on fire, they would be in extreme amounts of pain and they would
understand exactly what was going on. Simply, they'd know that being set on fire was not a dream
thus causing different responses from their brains and allowing them to understand they need to seek

The Themes Of Nigel Warburton's Religion, Happiness, And...
Nigel Warburton is a British philosopher who was born in 1962. He has written many books during
his life time such as The Basics (1992), Thinking from A to Z (1996) , Free speech: A Very Short

(Bachelor of Arts) from the University of Bristol and a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) from Darwin

Is there an answer for this question? Is there a clue to the real answer? There are philosophers who
also have these questions running through their heads. Not just that, there are philosophers who
think about what happiness is. We might think that being happy is happiness but is it really?
Couldn't it be also defined as just having a feeling or an emotion? They also try to figure this
question out: Reality is it true? Are we really what we think we are? Are we actually living or are we
just dreaming all of this? Philosopher Augustine believed that there is a God because he was
Christian. He also had many questions about his religion. "What did God want him to do? How
should he live? What should he believe?" (p 34) This made Augustine think so hard about this
question everyday. I think that Augustine is right. We must question our religions. It doesn't have to
be complicated questions but just simple questions would also be fine. Questioning your own
religion isn't bad, it's more like you are really interested and are proud of being who you are and
what religion you are following. Another philosopher who had a different idea than Augustine was
René Descartes. "How could he be sure that he wasn't dreaming?" (p 62) He believed that life

Dreaming Definition Essay
Dreaming, something that all humans do and yet no one truly knows the purpose of it. There are
many speculations about what dreaming is; why do we dream? Does it has a meaning? However is
just speculation, no true explanation to it. Dreams have been a subject scientifically, in philosophy,
religions, cultures. However dreams have yet to be proven scientifically it's purpose. How come we
don't know the purpose of something that every human being experiences through out their whole
life? A dream is images, sounds, sensations, emotions that occur involuntary in our brain during our

However these dreams will be more realistic, they will feel like everyday life. The explanation for
that consists in the parts of the brain that are active. Most of the brain will have it's activities
decreased during no REM sleep, when in REM sleep some parts of the brain will be more active
than when you are awake. An average person spends six years of their life dreaming, which is
around two hours per night. We don't know if it's actually serving any purpose for our body or mind,
but everybody does dream, some people may not remember but that doesn't mean that they don't
dream. The only way a person doesn't dream is if they have a brain injury or are taking some
medication that affects dreaming. There are many theories about dreaming, like some neurological
theories made by different people. Some examples of activation synthesis hypothesis were made by
Freud who had his own interpretation for dreams, he was one of the first one to come up with
theories about it. He believed it was the unconscious coming to life, that dreams were fulfilling our
wishes in our sleep so we could keep on sleeping relaxed; that the manifest content and the latent
content once combined would give meaning to the persons true wishes. As transferring the

Benefits Of Lucid Dreaming
All You Need to Know About Lucid Dreaming
Chapter 1: Overview of Lucid Dreams
Dreams have played a very crucial role to cultures through the years. The aborigines have believed
that the stories of the world' very start as the realization of their dreaming. Native Americans have
believed that their dreams are doorways to the spiritual world, ways to quests and prophecies.
The concept of lucid dreaming is not something new either. Aristotle is considered to be the first one
to write about lucid dreaming; however, he did not coin a term for it. Certain Tibetan Buddhists
have been practicing "dream yoga" for a long time, which is something similar to lucid dreaming.
The ultimate goal of dream yoga is to examine your consciousness and give you to a state of

Definition Essay: What Are We Dreaming?
By definition dream is a succession of images, ideas, emotions, and sensations that usually occurs
involuntarily in the mind during certain stages of sleep. When we dream many there are many
different events, people and even animals involved. Although this may seem that we are dreaming
we are actually in REM sleep. REM sleep is "a kind of sleep that occurs at intervals during the night
and is characterized by rapid eye movements, more dreaming and bodily movement, and faster
pulse and breathing." This is why all these extraordinary events happen to us when we are dreaming
because we are in a REM sleep. On December 14 2016 when I went to sleep I had a rarely odd type
of dream. In my dream my parents had adopted a little baby boy. The little boy was roughly around
5 or 6 years old. The little boy seemed so happy when he arrived at my house. When I went outside
and greeted this little boy he hugged me and his exact words "Thank you for giving me the family I
never had." I then told the little boy to come in, I then proceeded to ask him what his name was. He
told me his name was Valento. He came from Mexico and his family was super poor, they had to
struggle just to give each kid a piece of bread each day. He then told me that his family was never a
family that was happy they would always fight and he never got an education. ... Show more content

Rene Descartes Rhetorical Analysis
199: The Meditator sets aside some time to finally review the deceptions he has believed during his
life and the unreliability of his knowledge. Alone in a room with a fireplace burning at his side, he
desires to think as a blank slate and deliberate from a new beginning. His goal being to find out if
his previous ideas contain doubts, making them false. 200L: By assuming that his ideological
groundwork is flawed, he casts out all his beliefs into doubt. Based upon the fact that his ideas and
beliefs are derived from the senses, the senses being an unreliable resource, he concludes that his
previous beliefs must be untrue. As he continues to question himself he finds his thoughts to
resemble that of an insane person, however he reassures himself this he is not mentally insane.

Meaning, we could be constantly dreaming and not be aware of it. He uses this line of reasoning to

mentions being able to have perceptions similar to the sensations he has while dreaming. Therefore
there are no definitive signs of to discern between dream experience and wake experience. Which
makes it possible for him to claim that he may be dreaming at that very moment, even though he

statement with the concept of doubt and skepticism, he is able to fully explain why one can not tell
whether they are awake of dreaming. Consequently, we must carefully test and examine our senses

Dreams Influence On Aboriginal Culture
Have you ever found yourself remembering dreams from long ago, to the point that you wonder if
they were dreams or actual memories? It is this concept, expanded, that defines the Aboriginal
culture.
Dreams play a role in nearly everyone's life. Unless you're sleeping like the dead every night of your
life you've probably had some dreams. Sometimes they seem completely random, other times
terrifying, or maybe they are triggered by events that happened in your awake state. Most of us
leave dreams as dreams. Sure, we throw the word dream around in various contexts, "I have a
dream," anyone? Occasionally they seem interesting enough and we'll make a weak attempt at
explaining them to someone and then move on. Dreams, mainly in Western society ... Show more

They believe that their Ancestral Beings created landforms and animals & plants. The Aboriginal
word for this Creation Period varies according to each linguistic region throughout Australia.
Aboriginal people often interpret dreams as being the memory of things that happened in this
Creation Period. Dreams are important to Aboriginal people as it is a time when they are
transformed back to their ancestral time. This inclusion of the Creation Period and beginning of
Earth time in dreams has led to previously referred term, "The Dreamtime" to describe the time of
creation in Aboriginal religion. The Dreamtime does not mean that a person is dreaming just as
much as it means they are dreaming. It is a reference to the present just as much as it is to the
Creation Period. It sounds more confusing to us on the outside than it actually is. Where we live on
very linear depictions of time, laying out the past in a series of chronological events, the Aborigines
have singular time. It is fluid and one.
Tribal elders explain bits and pieces of truth from these dream stories, in a way that's applicable for
the present via a Code of Law set up by previous generations. The Dreaming or 'Tjukurrpa' also
means 'to see and understand the law' as translated from the Arrernte language. These stories pass on
vital knowledge to the incoming generations; everything from moral values to belief systems.

Dreaming of birds was also a sign from the gods. Birds symbolize different types of people. Birds

Main Point #2: Facts about Dreams 1. Your body goes through 4 stages of sleep. REM (rapid eye
movement) is the 4th stage and when you do most of your dreaming. "While you are dreaming, your
body undergoes noticeable changes. Your adrenaline rises, your blood pressure increases, and you
heart beats faster. Given this hyperactivity, it should be no surprise how someone with a weak heart
can die in their sleep (dreammoods.com)." It usually takes 30–90 minutes to reach REM, a person
goes in and out of REM 4–7 times a night. During REM your eyes rapidly move back and forth
under the eyelids. Our bodies are completely immobile and muscles are relaxed. You may shift
around in your sleep but when in REM you are completely still. 2. Dreammoods.com states that
Researchers have found why dreaming is so important and if you do not enter the dream phase it
causes irritability and anxiety. They performed a study, where they would wake up a person right
before they entered the REM stage, and then let the person fall back asleep, and then wake them up
again and do this several times during the night. They repeated this over several nights. They then
observed the subjects doing everyday activities and found they were disoriented, crabby, and quick
tempered. Dreaming is necessary and helps to recharge the mind and visualize the body. 3.

Analysis Of ' Lucid Dreams '
During "lucid dreams" we are remarkably wakeful–even though still asleep. We may be able to
reason clearly, remember freely, signal that we are conscious, and may even change the plot if we so
choose. But it takes training.
I am in the middle of a riot in the classroom. Everyone is running around in some sort of struggle.
Most of them are Third World Types, and one of them has a hold on me–he is huge, with a
pockmarked face. I realize that I am dreaming and stop struggling. I look him in the eyes and, while
holding his hands, speak to him in a loving way, trusting my intuition to supply the beautiful words
of acceptance that flow out of me. The riot has vanished, the dream fades, and I awaken feeling
wonderfully calm.
We do not usually question the reality of our dreams until after we have awakened. But it is not
always so. That we sometimes dream while knowing that we are dreaming has been known since the
time of Aristotle. During such "lucid dreams," the dreamer 's consciousness seems remarkably
wakeful. The lucid dreamer can reason clearly, remember freely, and act volitionally upon
reflection, all while continuing to dream vividly. As in the dream above, which I had a little more
than two years ago, the dreamer may take an active hand in resolving the dream 's conflict and in
bringing the plot to a satisfactory conclusion.
Unlike researchers who have gotten people to change the outcome of their dreams through
discussions beforehand, I have found that the dreamer

Persuasive Essay On Dreaming
When humans are asleep they create new realities in their brains. To most people these realities are
called dreams. Dreaming occurs during the process of REM. REM is rapid eye–movement. One of
the most asked questions about dreaming is why do humans dream. Humans dream because they
have certain wants or desires that cannot be achieved while being awake. Creating a new reality
with accomplish these desires and leave the person feeling good. Dreaming can create many
feelings. People think that dreaing only happens to creative people. But that is not true, everyone
dreams! Dreaming can come in many different ways. Dreams. What are they? Dreaming is the
process when humans are sleeping and they create stories based on their pleasures. Researchers
have found that there is still more to discover about the process of dreaming because the author says
"As with many things concerning the brain and unconscious thought, there is so much that remains
unknown about dreaming" (Hannah Nichols). Based on Hannah's article Dreams: Why do we
Dream?, some possible explanations for dreaming are unconscious desires and wishes. Every human
wishes something in their life, even when they do not realize it. Being asleep unlocks those desires
and humans make a reality where that wish comes true. The next possible explanation for dreaming
is to interpret signals from the brain and body. When humans fall asleep our brains are the most
active than being awake. Our brains try to process what is

Aboriginal Identity And Rituals: The Dreaming
The Dreaming The Dreaming is communicated through songs, stories and rituals, in which is

Aboriginal people's spirituality, land and family through this form of communication. The
Dreamtime "shapes the Aboriginal people's view of the universe and themselves" (Wierzbicka &

system of rules, known as "the classificatory system of kinship, and is essential to physical,
psychological and emotional survival in traditional Aboriginal society" (Fryer–Smith, 2008, p. 47).
It organizes social and economic relationships, all of which are of "vital importance" in Aboriginal
societies (Edwards, 1998, p. 85). Every person in a language group knows exactly where they stand

Field of Dreams
A series of thoughts, images, and sensations that occur during a person's mind during the time that
they sleep is known as a dream. Dreams go way back until the beginning of mankind, even to the
BC era during the time that Egyptians and Greeks were the leading force! The Egyptians examined
the meanings behind the dreams we have and analyzed the symbols. There are a numerous amount
of reasons behind our dreams. People must ask all the time, what is the reasoning behind dreaming?
Why do we dream? What is the meaning behind the dream I had? In an average lifetime,
approximately six years is spent dreaming. Every single person on this planet dreams and just
because one might not remember doing so, it was still done. One might have several dreams occur
throughout a normal night of sleep that lasts from about seven to eight hours. Everyone has dreams
and each experience is distinctive and personal. Some can contain vivid pictures or memorable
illustrations of reality and others can be unreal or abstract. In a way, they all have certain meanings
to them and there can be messages hidden that are trying to tell someone something. An abundant
amount of people are always curious as to why they dreamed what they did and spend time looking
for those answers. There is a history of dreaming that dates back to the BC era when the Egyptians

The fact that Curley's wife hates her life makes a huge contrast between her bad life and the
possibilities associated with the American Dream. This contrast is shown in the line "Coulda' been
in the movies an' had nice clothes."(Steinbeck,89) Curley's wife is presents the epitome of a person
striving for the American Dream. She often says things like "I coulda made something of
myself....maybe I will yet."(Steinbeck,88) By Steinbeck using this character, he intended to show
the difference between a "fake" yearning for the dream and a true whole–hearted desire for it.
Curley's wife would give anything to be successful in the future. This view is also seen by Kevin
Attell who said " To be sure, it is about dreaming of the future..."(Attell) The opinion from this critic

In perspective, The Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald also has many examples of the
American Dream. The main character, Gatsby, shows by far the most want for something better in
his life. Gatsby often shows this yearning. For example, when he said "You should live in
California," he was inferring that a better life awaits in California.(Fitzgerald,18) Growing up,
Gatsby had all that he needed, but from an early age he showed signs of wanting more in life. As he
expressed this hi s father would remind him that he was very fortunate by saying "Just remember

Psychoanalysis : A Systematic Structure Of Theories...
What is Psychoanalysis?
Psychoanalysis is a systematic structure of theories concerning the relations of conscious and
unconscious psychological processes (Dictionary). Psychoanalysis comes from the German word
Psychoanalyse which means to investigate or to treat. By this means whatever troubles or nightmare
that someone has in their unconscious mind or a dream, it is tied to an event or situation in that
person's life. This term was introduced by Josef Braur and his then assistant Sigmund Freud in 1895
when they both wrote Studies on Hysteria with the theory that experiencing trauma in one's life
cannot be interrogated into the world of understanding, to which Freud soon expands further into the
field thus earning the title "Father of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 1899, Freud published a book titled The Interpretation of Dreams and it was the first time that we
ever considered dreams to have an actual reason behind them and that we should have more of a
scientific approach to the matter (The Interpretation of Dreams). Freud takes the objective approach
to dreaming, taking dreams and tying them into the external world. Freud distinguished manifest
and latent content of dreams by determining what they are individually. Manifest is what the
dreamer remembers while Latent is the underlying wish or desire the individual has (McLeod,
2013). "The process whereby the underlying wish is translated into the manifest content is called
dream–work. The purpose of dream work is to transform the forbidden wish into a non–threatening
form, thus reducing anxiety and allowing us to continuing sleeping. Dream work involves the
process of condensation, displacement, and secondary elaboration. (McLeod, 2013)" Freud also
developed the idea of id, ego, and superego and how they play a role in our personality that ties
within our dreams. To Freud Id represents instinct and drives that can contain activities such as
eating, sex, and breathing. Ego develops from infancy and its goal is to satisfy the demands of id in
a safe way which can operate in both the conscious and unconscious mind. Superego can develop
during early childhood and this ensures moral

Fantasies from Lucid Dreaming
Lucid Dreaming
When fantasies of the wider vistas of life is spoken about, 'dreams' are what pops into the minds of
mostly everyone as every human being is free in their dreams. Deep within each and every one lie
infinite possibilities, and abilities to experience anything imaginable with the state of consciousness
while sleeping that each human holds that are yet to be discovered. The realisation of knowing that
you are dreaming also creates another world to escape to. The simple thought of being able to take
imagination to another level by taking action on it may simply be exciting and fascinating. However
how terrifying is the thought of losing control of your imagination and become torn apart in a
dream? Would a dream cause the same impacts as it would if it was in real life? There are always
two sides to everything and although there may be endless advantages to mastering this ability, just
like the real world, the journey of lucid dreaming may also have its up and downs. While this may
be the case, there is nothing in this world that does not involve risks and as much as it might be
slightly scary when it first gets a little bit out of control, there are hardly any real dangers and more
advantages than one can imagine.
The official term that is connected to this phenomenon is called 'lucid dreaming' which was given to
by a Dutch psychiatrist named Federik van Eden in a 1913 article called 'A Study of Dreams'.
However, people were exposed to this concept for

Character Analysis : The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty
Walter Mitty has more going on then people think. Walter has an awkward personality and is kinda
clumsy. He has an imaginative imagination and it could sometimes get in the way. If he was around
this era they would probably classify him as ADHD. Everything has a lesson to be told or learned
from. I took the one lesson from Walter Mitty as " Stop Dreaming and start living".
There is nothing wrong with being a dreamer. But the real magic happens when you start taking
action, when you start living the life of your dreams. Day dreaming is a way to pass time and a fun
thing to do. It won't however get you far in life. Excessive daydreaming can get in your way and
distract from important things. In the movie, the Secret Life of Walter Mitty, there is a scene where
Walter is standing in front of the coffee machine staring off into space. His new boss the callow Ted
Hendricks and his two lackeys show up and notice his non movement. They throw a red paper clip
at him snapping him out of his trance while laughing and making jokes. Constant daydreaming is
making him a target of jokes. Another scene is when he first met his new boss and at that moment
chose to zone out when his boss asked him where he works. When he comes out of the trance he
comes to an awkward situation to find they were still waiting for an answer. That's not a good way
to make a good first impression on his new boss. His daydreaming can distract him and can lead

Body Paragraph 2:
A challenge that Jamie has to face and overcome is when he tries to have some sense of belonging
to the community of Port Barren. Archie, his guardian throughout the novel, tells him his version of
a dreamtime story called 'The wanderers and the lost ones'. This story challenges Jamie to think
whether he is lost or a wanderer. This makes him feel responsible for finding out who is disturbing
the balance and it is up to him to try and restore it. This is shown to the reader when Jamie thinks,
"It was weird, no beginning, no middle, no end, no plot. And yet he couldn't shake the feeling that
there was something important behind the strange words. He pondered it but couldn't make anything
of it" [page 126]. The story makes Jamie wonder who he is and how he belongs in the community.
This challenges him to think more about himself and what he needs to do to change and become a
better person. This also made him change the way he thought about himself, it made him to thrive to
do the best he can.
Conclusion:
Jamie faces many conflicts and challenges throughout the novel and they all have an effect that
makes him change in character. Jamie's close relationship with Cameron helps him to thrive to be

Analysis of Anthony Eaton's A New Kind of Dreaming Essay
Q. "Anthony Eaton portrays the issues of the abuse of authority and power through chracterisation".
Discuss this statement providing close references to the novel.
Characterisation is a vivid description of a person's appearance and character. This is presented
through their actions, speech or thought. The novel 'A New Kind of Dreaming' by Anthony Eaton
uses characterisation to portray the issue of abuse of authority and power through the antagonist
Sergeant Butcher. Sergeant Butcher is a powerful high ranked policeman in the isolated town Port

that would follow, or to keep quiet.

relationship and as he has a more powerful authority he can ruin her career and put in prison. As
readers we are positioned to feel sorry for Lorraine in the end because she made a mistake (having a
relationship with a client) and it was always coming back to haunt her. Eventually she tried to flee
but died while doing so.
Constable Mike McPherson was a colleague of Sergeant Butcher and was seen as a drunk.
Throughout the novel he is constantly drinking alcohol and receives no respect from the community.
However Butcher allowed McPherson to keep his job, although he was an alcoholic, this was so
Butcher could protect himself. If McPherson was let go he could overcome his alcoholism and
report Butcher's crimes. The reason behind his heavy drinking was to forget what happened while he
was on the boat with Sergeant Butcher. The situation was he and Butcher saw a load of dead
refugees and he witnessed Butcher killing an old man and a young girl. Because Butcher knows

attempted to, and did, fly. After waking up, I researched about the phenomenon on the Google and
found out that it is called "Lucid dream". The definition, according to the Oxford dictionary, defines
lucid as 'showing or having the ability to think clearly, especially in intervals between periods of
confusion or insanity', and dream is 'a series of thoughts, images, and sensations occurring in a
person's mind during sleep.' In this paper, there will be explanation ... Show more content on

However, it is achievable skill that everyone can lean. Lucidity can be influenced by the technical
practice; everyone can practice and become a lucid dreamer. The first tool for one to start lucid
dream is called MILD technique. This tool requires that you rehearse a dream before falling asleep
and visualize becoming lucid while focusing on the intention to remember and recognize that one is
dreaming (LaBerge, 1980) Another one is WILD Technique or Mnemonic Induction of Lucid
Dreams. Falling asleep with the conscious and wake up in the lucid dream world by focusing on the
breathing, heart beating, hypnagogic imagery, deliberate visualizations. (LaBerge and Rheingold,

Nature Of Dreams Research Paper
Dreams can be awe–inspiring, strange and even downright disturbing. Dreams can evoke emotions,
feelings and visuals that can bring out our worst fears, give us hope, and even allow us to change the
world. There have been many documented scientific discoveries that are described as being first
encountered in a dream, such as with Dmitri Mendeleev in discovering the periodic table: "In a
dream I saw a table where all the elements fell into place as required. Awakening, I immediately
wrote it down on a piece of paper..." All of this can make one wonder, what really are dreams, and
what is their purpose? The truth is, this has been a mystery for scientists and philosophers for
decades.
The nature of dreams was first deliberated by ancient philosophers rather than scientists.
Philosophers Hobbes and Descartes thought dreams were a threat against knowledge, as they
believed it was impossible to tell if a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, the "Random Activation" theory as proposed by psychiatrists Hobson and McCarley
simply states that dreams are a result of random activation of the brain that can be caused by
activated memories. The problem with this theory is that dreams seem to be smooth, follow a
storyline and can be quite detailed, disproving that this process is completely random in nature.
Another theory, called the "reverse learning theory" states that the brain needs to re–organize itself
due to the vast amount of information it receives during the day, and that dreaming aids in this
process by removing unwanted information. As some dream content has been associated with
different mental functions, it would be possible that dreams are mere side–effect of the periodic
activation of the brain during sleep. Yet, this would not prevent them from serving a derivative
psychological function and from being personally meaningful to the

On My Way

  • 1. On My Way René Descartes was a famous French mathematician, scientist, and philosopher. He was arguably known as the "Father of Modern Philosophy." Descartes published many works of mathematics and philosophy throughout his life. In one of his most important works, Meditations on First Philosophy, he added a number of arguments for and against skepticism. Skepticism is the doubt about the truth of something and that absolute knowledge is not possible. Like past famous philosophers before him, Plato and Parmenides, Descartes believed that "evidence from the senses was inadequate to prove the kind of justification required for a claim of knowledge." In the first of Rene Descartes Meditations, he provided arguments for the skeptical position. He ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The method of hyperbolical doubt, also known as methodic doubt, is a methodical process of being skeptical about the truth of one's belief. According to the article "Descartes' Epistemology," Hyperbolical Doubt is perceived to mean that one applies doubt to all candidates of knowledge. However, Descartes sees hyperbolical doubt as this: when one decides to doubt their knowledge, one must apply their doubt to all candidates collectively and start at the foundation. As the phrase goes, "one bad apple can spoil a bunch," one false piece of knowledge can cause an entire belief to collapse. René Descartes describes three skeptical arguments in Meditation I. The first argument is about how one cannot rely solely on senses for knowledge because senses can be deceiving. One often makes decisions and judgments based on what one sees, hears, feels, smells, and so forth; therefore, when one experiences some form of sensory illusion, their judgment is impaired and the information can possibly be false. For example, a person can be driving on a highway on a scorching hot summer day and be absolutely certain that he or she sees a puddle of water on the road ahead. However, the closer they get to the "puddle of water," they quickly realize that it was an illusion of the sun. Their eyes deceived them and the knowledge which they ... • 3. Great Gatsby: the Immoral 20s The Immoral Twenties The 1920s gained its nickname, The Roaring Twenties from its wild and carefree lifestyle. The extensive wealth of the time filled most nights with parties, dancing, crazy antics, and illegal alcohol. F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel, The Great Gatsby, encompassed all of the aspects listed above. Not only did the book express the exciting side of the Twenties, it also expressed lack of morality of the time. According to The Great Gatsby, this lack of morality stemmed from the focus on material items, drinking, and dreaming. Everyone enjoys material things, whether they want a brand new car or even a phone; these items do not provide any necessity for survival, yet they make people's lives much easier, and even more ... Her dream stemmed from immoral ways; Tom had lots of money, and was willing to spend it on Myrtle, yet only for his own adulterous motives. Dreams stem the worst kind of immoralities because the best intentions can lead to the worst outcomes, so many dreamers do not realize their mistakes. The Roaring Twenties, according to Fitzgerald lacked morals stemming from high aspirations, materialism and liquor. While morality may seem easily discernable many people still act immorally. These bases of impurities still exist today, and stem the same results. For the betterment of the public, one should be careful in what they do; many other examples provide bases for immorality. • 4. Lucid Dreams : A Lucid Dream Lucid Dreaming A lucid dream is one in which the person dreaming knows that he or she is in a dream, does not wake from it, and feels in control of what is happening in the dream. Researcher Paul Tholey experimented with the induction of lucid dreams in experimental subjects in the 1980s, and wrote that he developed techniques for inducing lucid dreams that had first been tried on himself in 1959 (Tholey 875). One of these techniques was called the "reflection technique, and his experimental subjects were able to induce the state of lucidity in their dreams (Tholey 876). The reflection technique basically involved the subject asking him or herself, while awake, if he or she was dreaming; then, it was hoped, the person would be able to ask him or herself the same thing while asleep in a dream, and thus become aware. By using his techniques, Dr. Tholey was able to test several hypotheses concerning the content of dreams and the eye movements that occur during the dreams. Tholey continued his experiments, and in 1989 published research in which he had investigated the cognitive tasks that characters in a lucid dream could perform (Tholey 567). Tholey's idea was not that the dream characters themselves were independent of the dreamer, but that they came from parts of the brain of the dreamer. He thought that the brain processes that were responsible for dream events were those that were related to cognitive and affective memory processes, and might lead to separate ... • 6. Descartes 'Dreaming Argument' The dreaming argument The dream argument claims that the act of dreaming provides an intuitive evidence that cannot be distinguished from those that our senses give us when we are in the waking state, and for this reason, we cannot give full credit to the senses we use to distinguish reality from illusion. Consequently, any experience from our senses should at least be considered carefully and rigorously tested to determine if it really refers to reality. In this essay, I will argue that Descartes's Dream Argument proves that we cannot gain knowledge through the senses because senses are often deceiving and cannot be fully trusted. Our senses are our primary way of interacting with the world, they give us a raw information about what is present ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Unless he could be absolutely certain of something he would refuse to accept it as a basis for true knowledge. And that is precisely the case; the grass is not green, the color is only an effect of light on our sensory system; the color is relative to our perceptual system. Other species perceive the world differently. The sky is not blue, the blue color is not his, and it is only a second quality, resulting from the presence of water vapor in the atmosphere, which refracts sunlight. When I perceive an object, I believe it is a real object because of my perception; while when I imagine that I alone build an image, the perception could be similar to the imagination. Let us remember that Descartes does not convince us that we live in a world of illusion; skepticism is for him a stage. But the possibility of this illusion questions the reliability of sensitive knowledge as a whole including sensations that relate to closer objects. The dream argument is remarkable because it calls into question the sensible knowledge as a whole, even in the most everyday situations. And one cannot dismiss the argument as madness; because the dream is a normal hallucination. Descartes's argument may seem extravagant, but can you prove that you do not dream forever? If this is not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Pros And Cons Of Lucid Dreaming In 1911 the term, "Lucid Dreaming" was first used by a Dutch psychiatrist named Frederick Van Eden. He described it as a person sleeping but taking on an active role. Lucid dreaming is actually defined as a dream where the person dreaming is aware they're dreaming and have somewhat control over the characters and narrators and their role in the dream. Over the course of this document the basics of lucid dreaming and the knowledge we have of it will be covered, as well as the senses it effects and how we perceive it. Now for the most part everyone knows the five senses; sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch. We all have these, and our perception is how we react to these senses. Some people are more prone to senses than others and that is what makes all of us unique. Now I know what you're thinking; "How can you have any of these senses in reality if you're dreaming?" and that's a fair question. But lucid dreaming isn't just "dreaming" it's taking control of your ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At this point of sleep your body is basically paralyzed except for your eyes. • 8. Thomas Descartes 's ' Dream Argument ' And ' The Dream... In the First Meditation Descartes famously presented his 'dream argument' or 'dream paradox' in which he questions how we can distinguish between dreams and waking life. In this essay, I will explore various responses to the argument such as Hobbes and Locke and how I think Descartes would dismiss these arguments. I will finally present my own criticism alongside the work of Austin, Simpson and Ryle in order to illustrate the inconsistency of Descartes claims. In order to deconstruct the dream paradox I will appeal to one of the three common methods of solving paradoxes; denying a premise, particularly the first premise as this results in the collapse of the remaining conditional premises. I will ultimately show that the dream argument is a paradox and how this causes the dream argument to fail. Descartes aim throughout the first segment of his Meditations to overthrow existing foundations of knowledge and encourages readers to remove prior knowledge and prejudices in order to fully accept the new foundations which he aims to establish. The method of doubt is used to find beliefs that can serve as a new foundation for knowledge. Only beliefs that are certain, immune from doubt, can perform this function. Descartes argued that what we believe on the basis of the senses cannot meet the standard. Consequently, he concluded, we do not know anything on the basis of our senses and the dream argument is formed. The 'dream argument' results from a realization by Descartes that he ... She was standing there by herself with nothing but a smile on her face and books in her hand. We both walked up to her and gave her a hug that confused the crap out of her. Then next thing I knew Rebekah began to say, "are you okay?" and "how did it happen?" which confused her even more. It was my turn to chime in and that's when I said, "I'm sorry about you and Cameron. He's a jerk for breaking up with you." • 10. Reasons Why Aboriginal People Should Respect Aboriginal... Non–Aboriginal people should respect Aboriginal people. On 26 October 2019 Uluru climbing will be prohibited. This significant decision shows respect to the Aboriginal culture that consider Uluru a sacred place. Banning the climb is necessary even if the number of visitors who decide to climb the rock is dropping considerably. In 1990, 74% of the tourists climbed Uluru, but now the new kinds of experience that involve people deeply in the indigenous culture have reduced this percentage. In 2015, only 16.2% visitors climbed to the top, and the others chosen to respect the indigenous tradition (Uluru climbs will be banned from October 2019 after unanimous board decision to 'close the playground', 2017). There are several reasons to respect Aboriginal people: the deeper respect that they have to the land, they are the most ancient culture survived until now, and the international visitors more and more prefer the genuine contact with an indigenous experience. The first reason why non–Aboriginal people should respect Aboriginal people is, the deeper respect that they have to the land. Aboriginal people said that the land and the people are one, and the life depends on the reciprocal respect. Also, Aboriginal people honor the land, because it supplies food, water and other assets necessary for life. They don't own the land, because the land is for everyone. • 11. Dreaming from Various Sources The objective of this paper is to explore many articles covering the purpose of dreaming from various sources. The articles, however, may vary from researcher to researcher. As such, this paper will also detail the different theories about the usefulness of dreams. This paper will also take time to explain what a dream is, when dreams happen, and what their potential purposes may be. To start this paper, we first must understand what a dream is. According to the Merriam–Webster dictionary, a dream is "a series of thoughts, images, or emotions occurring during sleep". Dreams take the things we see during our waking hours and translate them into unique, sometimes horrifying, and possibly meaningful ways. Dreams could also be representations of subconscious feelings and desires, bubbling up from deep within our psyche. However, the actual purpose of dreams remains a mystery, even to today's foremost experts on this subject. Sigmund Freud attempted to understand what dreams meant; he thought that dreams were safeguards attempt deeper and darker desires from the human mind's id. Decades later, scientist John Allan Hobson theorized that dreams are a result of the brain attempting to interpret random electrical impulses within the brain, producing often elaborate and vivid details and plots while we sleep. Other research suggests that dreams are the brain's unique way of organizing disparate information; a kind of nightly mental reformatting. The average Joe takes a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Throughout the semester I altered my consciousness, or awareness of consciousness, by paying attention and changing certain "default" consciousness aspects. The semester projects and recordings allowed me to focus on different facets of my own consciousness day–to–day and throughout each day. By having different projects through the semester, I was able to restart my awareness of my "normal" consciousness and bring it to the forefront of my mind. I realized multiple things through this exercise, consciousness is largely based on perspective, consciousness is constantly flowing and moving, and consciousness is.... I will be discussing three key insights defining consciousness: as a state(s), phenomenon, and developmental processes. Consciousness as states can be compared to a flowing motion, it is not fixed. "Time, space, and body sense are the framework that give meaning to waking experience"– 10.2 (week 10 Phenomenological and Physiological Investigations). States of consciousness vary along the lines of waking, dreaming, and deep dreaming. Based on Wilber's theory in, States and Stages, stages people go through intermingle with with states. Stages are typically associated with age, a child is likely to be in the "Magical and Animistic" stage and believe in "mystical signs," like having an imaginary friends, with great focus on "safe clans, nests, and powerful elders". • 13. Why Do Lucid Dreams Exist There are several theories as to why we dream. One theory is that dreams work with sleep to help the brain sort through everything it collects during the waking hours. Everyone dreams during sleep, but not everyone can recall the mental escapade the next day, scientist aren't sure why some people remember more than others. "in every sleep stage, there's some kind of subjective experience," said Michael schredl, a researcher in the sleep laboratory at the Central Institute of Mental Health in Mannheim, Germany, and an expert on dream recall. Eaton has used a variety of literary techniques such as a third–person limited point of view, setting, characterisation and imagery to position the reader to respond to the text's characters with a specific moral mind–set. Ultimately, Eaton has used a carefully constructed the characters in a new kind of dreaming, to facilitate an empathy for those that suffer from injustice and corruption within society. The reader's first introduction to Butcher is crucial in the author's construction of his character. Immediately, the characterisation of Butcher as a villain is apparent as "With no warning, his hand shot out and grabbed Jamie's throat, the grip instant and vice–like...". This characterisation of Butcher (what he says and does) effects the way the reader responds to him and the corruption and violence that he represents. Jamie has done nothing to provoke Butcher, yet is treated with hostility from the very first interaction between the two characters, as proved by the "vice–like" nature of the grip. Another thing that uncovers the traits of a character is what they say. Butcher uses threatening language throughout a new kind of dreaming, such as when he says "One wrong move, son, and your brains are all over that wall" before handcuffing and injuring Jamie. In conclusion, the actions and dialogue of Butcher is a technique of characterisation that Eaton uses to position readers to respond to his antagonistic character and the theme of corruption with distaste, simultaneously advancing the reader's empathy for ... In order to give a better understanding of how the two differ, Locke uses an obvious example of acute pain, such as being set on fire. Studying Locke and his refuting theory about dreaming in relation to Descartes, the journal writes, "I believe he [someone like Descartes] will allow a very manifest difference between dreaming of being in the Fire, and being actually in it. It is important to emphasize that Locke's example is one of physical pain, as nightmares involving mental pain, such as anxiety, shame or fear, are commonplace. Locke is saying that the actual physical sensation of pain, at least in its more extreme forms, is not something that we could have when asleep and dreaming." (Hill, 2004) Locke's use of physical pain as such is extreme but gets the point across: what we are capable of living through we are capable of dreaming, but dreaming about being set on fire does not hold any significance in that the person is dreaming and they are not experiencing real pain. As opposed to dreaming, if one was to be set on fire, they would be in extreme amounts of pain and they would understand exactly what was going on. Simply, they'd know that being set on fire was not a dream thus causing different responses from their brains and allowing them to understand they need to seek safety and ... By definition dream is a succession of images, ideas, emotions, and sensations that usually occurs involuntarily in the mind during certain stages of sleep. When we dream many there are many different events, people and even animals involved. Although this may seem that we are dreaming we are actually in REM sleep. REM sleep is "a kind of sleep that occurs at intervals during the night and is characterized by rapid eye movements, more dreaming and bodily movement, and faster pulse and breathing." This is why all these extraordinary events happen to us when we are dreaming because we are in a REM sleep. On December 14 2016 when I went to sleep I had a rarely odd type of dream. In my dream my parents had adopted a little baby boy. The little boy was roughly around 5 or 6 years old. The little boy seemed so happy when he arrived at my house. When I went outside and greeted this little boy he hugged me and his exact words "Thank you for giving me the family I never had." I then told the little boy to come in, I then proceeded to ask him what his name was. He told me his name was Valento. Everyone is running around in some sort of struggle. Most of them are Third World Types, and one of them has a hold on me–he is huge, with a pockmarked face. I realize that I am dreaming and stop struggling. I look him in the eyes and, while holding his hands, speak to him in a loving way, trusting my intuition to supply the beautiful words of acceptance that flow out of me. The riot has vanished, the dream fades, and I awaken feeling wonderfully calm. We do not usually question the reality of our dreams until after we have awakened. But it is not always so. That we sometimes dream while knowing that we are dreaming has been known since the time of Aristotle. During such "lucid dreams," the dreamer 's consciousness seems remarkably wakeful. Researchers have found that there is still more to discover about the process of dreaming because the author says "As with many things concerning the brain and unconscious thought, there is so much that remains unknown about dreaming" (Hannah Nichols). Based on Hannah's article Dreams: Why do we Dream?, some possible explanations for dreaming are unconscious desires and wishes. Every human wishes something in their life, even when they do not realize it. Being asleep unlocks those desires and humans make a reality where that wish comes true. This contrast is shown in the line "Coulda' been in the movies an' had nice clothes."(Steinbeck,89) Curley's wife is presents the epitome of a person striving for the American Dream. She often says things like "I coulda made something of myself....maybe I will yet."(Steinbeck,88) By Steinbeck using this character, he intended to show the difference between a "fake" yearning for the dream and a true whole–hearted desire for it. Curley's wife would give anything to be successful in the future. This view is also seen by Kevin Attell who said " To be sure, it is about dreaming of the future..."(Attell) The opinion from this critic show that this opinion or view is also seen by others who read this book. In perspective, The Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald also has many examples of the American Dream. The main character, Gatsby, shows by far the most want for something better in his life. Gatsby often shows this yearning. For example, when he said "You should live in California," he was inferring that a better life awaits in California.(Fitzgerald,18) Growing up, Gatsby had all that he needed, but from an early age he showed signs of wanting more in life. • 32. Psychoanalysis : A Systematic Structure Of Theories... What is Psychoanalysis? Psychoanalysis is a systematic structure of theories concerning the relations of conscious and unconscious psychological processes (Dictionary). Psychoanalysis comes from the German word Psychoanalyse which means to investigate or to treat. By this means whatever troubles or nightmare that someone has in their unconscious mind or a dream, it is tied to an event or situation in that person's life. This term was introduced by Josef Braur and his then assistant Sigmund Freud in 1895 when they both wrote Studies on Hysteria with the theory that experiencing trauma in one's life cannot be interrogated into the world of understanding, to which Freud soon expands further into the field thus earning the title "Father of ... In 1899, Freud published a book titled The Interpretation of Dreams and it was the first time that we ever considered dreams to have an actual reason behind them and that we should have more of a scientific approach to the matter (The Interpretation of Dreams). Freud takes the objective approach to dreaming, taking dreams and tying them into the external world. Freud distinguished manifest and latent content of dreams by determining what they are individually. Manifest is what the dreamer remembers while Latent is the underlying wish or desire the individual has (McLeod, 2013). "The process whereby the underlying wish is translated into the manifest content is called dream–work. The purpose of dream work is to transform the forbidden wish into a non–threatening form, thus reducing anxiety and allowing us to continuing sleeping. Dream work involves the process of condensation, displacement, and secondary elaboration. (McLeod, 2013)" Freud also developed the idea of id, ego, and superego and how they play a role in our personality that ties within our dreams. To Freud Id represents instinct and drives that can contain activities such as eating, sex, and breathing. Ego develops from infancy and its goal is to satisfy the demands of id in a safe way which can operate in both the conscious and unconscious mind. Superego can develop during early childhood and this ensures moral ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 34. Fantasies from Lucid Dreaming Lucid Dreaming When fantasies of the wider vistas of life is spoken about, 'dreams' are what pops into the minds of mostly everyone as every human being is free in their dreams. Deep within each and every one lie infinite possibilities, and abilities to experience anything imaginable with the state of consciousness while sleeping that each human holds that are yet to be discovered. The realisation of knowing that you are dreaming also creates another world to escape to. The simple thought of being able to take imagination to another level by taking action on it may simply be exciting and fascinating. However how terrifying is the thought of losing control of your imagination and become torn apart in a dream? Would a dream cause the same impacts as it would if it was in real life? There are always two sides to everything and although there may be endless advantages to mastering this ability, just like the real world, the journey of lucid dreaming may also have its up and downs. While this may be the case, there is nothing in this world that does not involve risks and as much as it might be slightly scary when it first gets a little bit out of control, there are hardly any real dangers and more advantages than one can imagine. The official term that is connected to this phenomenon is called 'lucid dreaming' which was given to by a Dutch psychiatrist named Federik van Eden in a 1913 article called 'A Study of Dreams'. • 35. Character Analysis : The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty Walter Mitty has more going on then people think. Walter has an awkward personality and is kinda clumsy. He has an imaginative imagination and it could sometimes get in the way. If he was around this era they would probably classify him as ADHD. Everything has a lesson to be told or learned from. I took the one lesson from Walter Mitty as " Stop Dreaming and start living". There is nothing wrong with being a dreamer. But the real magic happens when you start taking action, when you start living the life of your dreams. Day dreaming is a way to pass time and a fun thing to do. It won't however get you far in life. Excessive daydreaming can get in your way and distract from important things. In the movie, the Secret Life of Walter Mitty, there is a scene where Walter is standing in front of the coffee machine staring off into space. His new boss the callow Ted Hendricks and his two lackeys show up and notice his non movement. They throw a red paper clip at him snapping him out of his trance while laughing and making jokes. Constant daydreaming is making him a target of jokes. Another scene is when he first met his new boss and at that moment chose to zone out when his boss asked him where he works. When he comes out of the trance he comes to an awkward situation to find they were still waiting for an answer. That's not a good way to make a good first impression on his new boss. This makes him feel responsible for finding out who is disturbing the balance and it is up to him to try and restore it. And yet he couldn't shake the feeling that there was something important behind the strange words. He pondered it but couldn't make anything of it" [page 126]. As readers we are positioned to feel sorry for Lorraine in the end because she made a mistake (having a relationship with a client) and it was always coming back to haunt her. Eventually she tried to flee but died while doing so. Constable Mike McPherson was a colleague of Sergeant Butcher and was seen as a drunk. Throughout the novel he is constantly drinking alcohol and receives no respect from the community. However Butcher allowed McPherson to keep his job, although he was an alcoholic, this was so Butcher could protect himself. If McPherson was let go he could overcome his alcoholism and report Butcher's crimes. The reason behind his heavy drinking was to forget what happened while he was on the boat with Sergeant Butcher. The situation was he and Butcher saw a load of dead refugees and he witnessed Butcher killing an old man and a young girl. Dreams can evoke emotions, feelings and visuals that can bring out our worst fears, give us hope, and even allow us to change the world. There have been many documented scientific discoveries that are described as being first encountered in a dream, such as with Dmitri Mendeleev in discovering the periodic table: "In a dream I saw a table where all the elements fell into place as required. Awakening, I immediately wrote it down on a piece of paper..." All of this can make one wonder, what really are dreams, and what is their purpose? The truth is, this has been a mystery for scientists and philosophers for decades. The nature of dreams was first deliberated by ancient philosophers rather than scientists. Philosophers Hobbes and Descartes thought dreams were a threat against knowledge, as they believed it was impossible to tell if a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, the "Random Activation" theory as proposed by psychiatrists Hobson and McCarley simply states that dreams are a result of random activation of the brain that can be caused by activated memories. The problem with this theory is that dreams seem to be smooth, follow a storyline and can be quite detailed, disproving that this process is completely random in nature. Another theory, called the "reverse learning theory" states that the brain needs to re–organize itself due to the vast amount of information it receives during the day, and that dreaming aids in this process by removing unwanted information. As some dream content has been associated with different mental functions, it would be possible that dreams are mere side–effect of the periodic activation of the brain during sleep.
