2. INTRODUCTION
The identification of the mathematically gifted is as
important as nurturing their mental abilities and skills
to acquire a high level mathematical thinking and
reasoning.
The unique characteristics exhibited by the gifted
students will help the teacher in identify them.
However ,the teacher has to carefully follow their
academic and other performance consistently for a
long time before he identifies them as gifted .
DATAANALYSIS
CHARACTERISTICS OFTHEMATHEMATICALLYGIFTED
The secondary school curriculum committee gives the
following general and special characteristics which mark
the mathematically gifted.
General characteristics
3. Makes association readily and retains them
indefinitely.
Recognize similarities and differences quickly.
Has excellent memory, good vocabulary, broad
attention span, and high reading ability.
Has a relatively mature sense of values.
Uses his spare time productively
SPECIAL CHARACTERS
Recognizes patterns readily and enjoys speculating on
generalizations
Prefers to think on higher levels of abstractions
Classifies particular cases as special cases of more
general situations with relative ease
Follows a long chain of reasoning, frequently
,anticipating and contributing
Frequently asks profound questions.
May be reading mathematics books years ahead of his
age
Frequently impatient with drill and details that he thinks
are not important.
4. ENRICHMENT PROGRAMME FOR THE
GIFTED
The gifted children have tremendous energy with a lot
of determination to realize the goals. If not directed
properly ,this reservoir of energy may go waste and
sometimes may create serious problems for the
individual and society .The idea of giving special
attention to the gifted children by arranging separate
classes or sections is not practicable as the number of
such students in a particular school ,class and subject
may be very small.
For providing additional learning opportunities under
the enrichment programs , the following two channels
are suggested
1)Differential curriculumfor the gifted
2)Enrichment within the existing curriculum
CONCLUSION
Under the first channel, the curriculum may contain
more advanced topics or will include more challenging
tasks to motivate the mathematically gifted students
5. Under the second scheme, attempts
may be made to provide enrichment programs and
opportunities within the existing scheme.
