2. All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them,
but for this Assistant Professor aspirants the dream continues to be a
dream.
Finally came the call:
Applications are invited for Direct Recruitment
from eligible candidates for the post of Assis-
tant Professors in Tamil Nadu Collegiate
Educational Service for Government Arts &
Science Colleges and Colleges of Education
for the year 2018-19 only through online
mode up to 05.00 p.m. on 15.11.2019. Thou-
sands of assistant professor aspirants have been
eagerly awaiting the initiation of this process for
four years.
TN TRB Assistant Professor Vacancy 2019:
Eligibility
A PG in the relevant subject with a minimum of 55% marks with Ph.D
in the relevant subject or a pass in the NET/ SLET as per UGC Norms
in the relevant subject.
The Process:
Stage I: Certificate Verification
Stage II: Interview
Scale of Pay:
The reason for the dream is its Pay Scale i.e. is Rs. 57,700 – 1,82,400
which is nowhere near to their current pay which is around Rs. 18000
and that too not guaranteed for vacation time.
The Marks
The teaching experience carries a maximum of 15 marks. Candidates
will get 2 marks for each year's experience. In educational qualifica-
tion, PhD carries 9 marks while SLET/NET with MPhil carries 6
marks and without M.Phil 5 marks, Interview10 marks
Crucial factors
Work experience and educational qualification will play a crucial role
in getting shortlisted for interview. In the new format, candidates have
to record their work experience academic year-wise. It would ensure
that work experience while doing some degree or full time PhD will
not be considered for awarding weightage marks.
Challenges ahead:
Experience certificate: Official notification states that the experi-
ence certificates should carry the respective principal or head of the
institution with college secretaries' signature too.
Guest Lecture and Contract Faculties: Besides this, guest lectur-
ers from government colleges, who are awaiting work extension or-
ders, are finding it difficult to obtain experience certificates from their
principal offices.
Time factor: It is a real time consuming process to get the certifi-
cate from concerned colleges. Further, the experience has to be attest-
ed by regional joint directors of collegiate education.
Documents to submit: Apart from experience certificate along
with other certificates, candidates have been asked to furnish letter
from concerned university with the date of viva-voce conducted
for MPhil and PhD, which is impossible for many candidates since
usually no copy was issued to students. While aspirants can get a
copy of the letter from their respective guides, it may not be possi-
ble in case their research guides are not reachable before the last
date to send the applications.
Situational benefits
The college principal have to issue experience letter for the num-
ber of years of qualified service put in by the teachers in the col-
lege, but they are refusing to give experience letter citing that TRB
has not given any specific instructions for candidates from con-
verted constituent colleges. And many self-financing
colleges started making use of this situation for their
commercial benefits.
The Un-fare practices
There are worries if the recruitment process for assis-
tant professor vacancies will be done in a fair man-
ner. Since the absence of a written examination as
part of the selection process has caused many aspir-
ants to worry if recruitment would be done in a fair
manner as relying solely on the educational qualifica-
tions and experience.
The Deciding factor
If all the candidates who are called for personal inter-
view have 24 out of 24 marks, then the 10 marks in the interview
will be the decision maker. Interview could allow for less qualified
candidates to get selected. Interestingly, the same TRB conducts
written examinations for faculty appointment in engineering, poly-
technic and law colleges. It is only for arts and science and educa-
tion colleges that a written examination is not conducted. This
raises the doubt in the process.
The Inequality
The worst form of inequality is to try to make unequal things
equal. Teaching experience of candidates who worked at govern-
ment colleges, universities and self-financing colleges cannot be
treated the same. Similarly, Ph.D. from the Government Research
Institutions and Deemed Universities treaded same is unfair, simi-
larly Doctorates done their full time cannot be treated with those
who did it in part time. So, awarding same marks for experience
without considering where they have taught and done PhD without
considering their research contribution won’t be a good idea. The
quality of teaching faculty and their standard of research are the
main criteria adopted in the global ranking of universities, we
cannot have equilibrium in our education system with the current
inequality in the marking process.
Suggestions... nobody listens
Conducting a written test will ensure that selection is done in a fair
manner, a written test followed by an interview would provide
equal opportunity to all candidates. The written examination could
also help avoid any legal challenge to the recruitment process,
which could stop the entire process.
The Dream continues…
Transparency and Accountability cannot be expected in the inter-
view board and no wonder dreams of so many aspirants never
come true. Our aspirants don’t bother about whether the process is
unfair.. they just concentrate on what they have since they have
used to live through the worst parts of life so they hardly take the
best parts for granted… their dream continues…
