2. In English verbs are frequently combined to make more complex
expressions. To do this you need to know how to form the
second verb. After certain verbs we use the -ing form, and after
other verbs we use the infinitive. Sometimes we can use either
form and there is no change in meaning. Occasionally we can
use either form and there is a change in meaning.
Unfortunately, there isn’t a rule. You have to learn which verbs
go with which pattern.
For example:
• They refused to buy from us.
• They delayed buying from us.
• We persuaded them to buy from us.
• I recommend you buy from us.
3. On the following slides you are going to practice this
yourself.
You are going to complete the sentences using the
appropriate form of the verb.
On each slide you’ve got two opportunities.
When you click on the correct form of the verb you will be
met with applause.
However, if you click on the wrong form of the verb you will
be met with an explosion.
Click on the arrow beneat each completed sentence and you
will get to the next sentence.
If you click on the speaker in each slide you will hear the
sentence read out loud with both opportunities.
