Argumentative Essay On Track And Field
The playing conditions on various fields back when Jacqueline did track and field was way different back then. Jacqueline explains the playing
conditions on the various of fields she played on. "It was suitable for me back in the day, but now my high school has a official track and field turf
v.s the dirt field I ran on." The impact of these early experiences with track and field and reflecting back on the improvements done to the fields are
consistent with Beard and Green study on the role of turfgrasses on environmental protection and it's benefit to humans. Both authors explains "The
erosion control effectiveness of turfgrass is the combined result of a high shoot density and root mass for surface soil stabilization, plus a high biomass
matrix that provides resistance to lateral surface water flow, thus slowing otherwise potentially erosive water velocities. Therefore, perennial turfgrasses
offer one of the most cost–efficient methods to control water and wind erosion of soil. Such control is very important in eliminating dust and mud

Most adolescents participate in team sports, in which youths compete with others to achieve or obtain a certain goal. Working together and learning
how to cooperate and interact with others helps an adolescent develop socially. In addition, becoming socially accepted by one's peers and teammates
raises self–esteem and enables one to be more psychologically competent"(Chan, 1999). This understanding is rooted in Jacqueline's behavior which

the various markings. So therefore, track and field is a true athlete's sport, due to its many components and elements. There are six different track
events. Track events vary from sprints, middle distance, long distance, relays, as well as walks. Sprints require the usage of the starting blocks. The

The Olympic Games Of Ancient Greek Athletics
Stephen G. Miller, an expert Yale professor in the field of Ancient Greek athletics states that the Olympics were held "in honor of Zeus in the city of
Olympia" (Miller). "The element of religion is evident in this historical event. Many people have heard of the concepts of the Greek Gods, but this
level of religious involvement is interesting. These games were held "for four days every fourth summer", a tradition that partially continues to this day
(Miller). "Many festivals in ancient Greece were dedicated to the Gods" (Miller). In addition to the Olympic Games, there were also other athletic
festivals which included the Pythian Games at Delphi, the Isthmian at Corinth, and the Nemean at Argos (Miller). However, the Olympics atOlympia
were "the oldest and most prestigious of the four great ancient Greek athletic festivals. The height of the Olympic Games occurs between the fifth
and fourth centuries B.C. During this period, the games became more and more professionalized until they provoked much censure during the
Roman period (Miller). This is somewhat similar to the present day games where the competitors are supposed to be amateurs, but many are
professionals at their craft. Take for example the United States basketball squad. For decades this team has consisted of the best professionals the
country has to offer. This is still a tradition, or problem, the games experience today. The Greek games were very nationalistic and it is said that "states

are many elements to acknowledge while participating in the events.

To begin with, knowing an abundant amount of information on different subjects will suffice in academic learning. In the pentathlon, students gain
extra information from all different subjects, leaving the students to have to understand the topic. Because of this, students will need to have the
potential to learn multiple subjects at once. Adding onto this, I have the ability to learn many subjects and manage myself, but that is not what makes
me special. The key that makes me unique is understanding the material that is given and being able to explain it to another person, sharing knowledge
with the world. I would want to join pentathlon because of all the information, causing one to be open in all educational areas. Back in my elementary...

In fact, colleges look for academic success, such as the best grades, and talent in all areas. Adding onto this, McGarvin's pentathlon acceptance is
also based on the student's grades and talent, whether it's a musical or athletic ability. Based on this information, I have some musical talent, but I
have more athletic talent. The musical talent that I was born with was a strong voice, able to go as high as a soprano and as low as an alto singer.
This year in chorus, the teacher gave out solos for a song as she recommended me to do it. Therefore, I am singing a solo to demonstrate my voice
with the world. Although this may seem very simple, I decided to practice more often than other people, for I came in during lunch and after school for
the whole month. This is to show my dedication towards music, plus all my other classes. Adding onto my musical quality, this month, December, I am
planning to take piano lessons. The reason for this would be because to make a song the most pleasant sound comes from a piano, voice, and lyrics.
The second reason for playing the piano would be for college, for playing an instrument and having singing experience would boost up my chances
of getting accepted. Going on to my athletic experience, I am experienced in three sports: basketball, soccer, and tennis. In basketball, I naturally
have a gift in being skilled, so I practice every so often to keep up with my talent. In soccer, I have been on a team that was very well organized, but
I stopped being on the team after a year because I wanted to vary sports that I played. For tennis, I play every other week with my cousin because it
is enjoyable and I am very skilled and experienced player. After having musical and athletic talent, I had to vary my time between my extracurricular
activities and school. Because of all the practice, I gain an important skill known as

What Role Did Discus Play In Ancient Sports
Ancient Games and Sports Paper – Discus

Latin II G6
9.8.17.
Discus, an ancient athletic game originating in the ancient Greek Olympics, was one of the first games in the athletic competition. A throwing contest
involving a weighted metal or stone disc, known as a discus, comparable to the modern day frisbee, competitors competed to see who could throw the
disc the farthest. Representing one fifth of the pentathlon event, the discus throw was a popular Olympic event. It was later incorporated into the
modern Olympics at the time of their conception in 1896 (Encyclopedia Brittanica 1). Discus is still practiced similarly to ancient times, as a track and
field event in both minor and major competitions around the globe.

As a part of the pentathlon, the discus throw was held in high esteem by athletes and spectators alike in ancient times. It's legacy still lives on today,
as it is continued to be competed in track and field events, big and small, across the globe. After the rebirth of the Olympics, the discus event became
a feat of athleticism seen by people around the globe. Through its strong history and Greek roots, to its rigorous gameplay, to its modern relevance,
discus is truly a sport that has stood the test of time.

My Last Year In High School
My last year in high–school. My last regional track meet. My last throw. Everything I had been working towards for the last four years came down to
this very moment. On a scorching hot spring day, weary and patient athletes from all across Oklahoma gathered in Cordell around a concrete ring;
watching intently as the furthest discus thrower in the region arrived at his final throw. All attempts before this had landed outside the throwing
boundaries, so they did not count. This increased the pressure tenfold as I grabbed the metal disc that was to be my last chance at State. I slowly stepped
into the ring, took a deep breath, and shifted my weight onto the balls of my feet to prepare for the final toss. In this one moment, all of my
experiences that brought me to this place rushed forward in my mind.

In my freshman year, I was a big basketball player, but I often found myself bored in the spring time due to my lack of participation in school
activities. My friend, Grant, came up to me in the hall one day. "Hey, Cade! You should come throw discus with me in Track. It's a pretty fun sport
and we have a grill to cook food on. You can't turn down free food can you?" This, combined with the opportunity to miss a lot of school, convinced
me to sign up for a sport I had never even heard of. The first few months of the sport were hard, mostly consisting of nonstop weight lifting, sprints,
and not very much discus. When we finally traveled out to the field, my new coach

Organized Greek Games, By William J. Baker
In the article "Organized Greek Games ", William J. Baker's goal is to educate readers on the differences between the ancient Greek Olympic Games,
and today's modern Olympic Games. William Baker not only explains the physical aspects of the games , but the relationship between the Greek
religion and the Olympic games as well. William Baker's article follows his thesis well; which was, "Virtually everyone knows that the modern
Olympics are patterned on the Olympic Games of ancient Greece, yet few people have more than a hazy understanding of the original
Olympics".(article,pp58) William Baker wrote the "Organized Greek Games" in chronological order. An example of Baker writing the article
chronologically, is when William Baker describes the Greek game 's schedule, and the events that were planned for each day in order. "the duration
of the festival was set at five days, with only two and a half days devoted to the games themselves. the first day was given to religious
ceremonies."(article,pp61) In the "Organized Greek Games" William Baker quotes Socrates,"the body must bear its part in whatever man; and in all
the services required from the body, it is of the utmost importance to have it in the best possible condition."(pp.65) Baker got the information from
primary sources. Some other primary sources used in the article other than Socrates, are from Milo Crotan, Ancient Philosophers, and Plato.

The Event Of The Olympic Games
The Olympic games have become a worldwide event that is watched by millions of people who are either physically sitting in the stands, or sitting at
home on their couches. These games bring people from countries all around the world together where they can forget about their problems for a couple
of days every two years. Over time, the games have been being banned, have overcome gender discrimination, and had conflicts with many major
historical events.
The first ancient Olympic games were held in Olympia, Greece in 776 BC. The Greek people worshipped the gods, and the idea of these games came
from the need to have something to dedicate to them. The Greeks used the city of Olympia as a place for worship, and as a meeting place for
religious and political practices. At first, the games were only played for one day, but in 684 BC they were extended to three days, then during the
5th century BC, the games were changed to last five days. Status was not a factor when it came to who could participate in the games; any free male
citizen was allowed to participate. Women, however, were forbidden to participate in, or be a spectator at, the games if they were married, but women
who were unmarried were allowed to be spectators. The ancient Olympics only consisted of seven events: long jump, discus throw, running, shot put,
boxing, horse and chariot races, and pankration (a mixture of boxing and wrestling in a type of martial arts) (Ancient Olympic Games). In 708 BC, a

Running: An Integral Part of American Culture Essay example
Running: An Integral Part of American Culture
The running phenomenon has blended into society in many different aspects of our lives. This does not only include track and field, but also cross
country, road–racing, and jogging for health and leisure. Many Americans make running an essential part of their day.Running is not only good for
your heart and lungs, but it is very beneficial for relieving stress, keeping your metabolism high, and keeping you trim and muscular. Another expanding
characteristic of running is using it as a social experience. It is a part of people's routine to meet with friends and to catch up with one another.

It can be a medium in which one may see many friends or acquaintances on the running trails.
There is also the competitive aspect of running. It is arguably one of the oldest sports alive, and a good race is always entertaining for most spectators.
Competitive running exists on all levels. Young children can compete in age–group competitions up to the national level. High School State
Championships are held throughout the country, with states like Texas and California attracting as many as 30,000 fans. A good high school prospect
can earn a college scholarship (as I have) through running. The college scene has three different seasons (cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track).
Competing at the collegiate level in every sport is a big adjustment for athletes. Coming from a background in high school, some athletes may have also
participated in club teams. Some states have more stringent rules than others, but many athletes may even compete in world–wide competitions. This
allows for an easier transition into college competition. It is a great experience for an athlete to be able to compete in the collegiate level, but it also
entails many responsibilities as well. Athletes are rewarded with scholarships, which in turn is the salary that they are given for their extensive hours of
training, traveling and competing.
If a runner is at a top level, he/she can take

The History of the pentathlon
The history of the pentathlon stems from the complete physical training of the Greeks. The pentathlete was the product of training in five events,
unlike those athletes who were trained in specialized areas. It began as an athletic competition to determine the best all–around athlete. The pentathlon
was introduced into the Olympic Games around 708 B.C. Each pentathlete was superior in strength and activity, which was the ideal physical beauty.
The ideal pentathlete should be tall, well built, long legs, flexible hips, and preferably with long hands and fingers.

The military adopted this sport as a part of final examinations at a number military academies.
The afternoon of the second day was devoted to the pentathlon. All events were held in the Stadium, with the probable exception of wrestling. From
late in the 6th century B.C., all contestants were naked and barefoot as they competed. The number of entrants was small and it was not uncommon
for some to drop out while others were eliminated in contest. Victory was not calculated by points. If anyone was first in three events, he was
proclaimed the winner. If this did not occur, the field was slowly reduced until the wrestling event, where the only competitors were those who had
placed where in the earlier events and therefore had a chance to win.
In the modern day Olympics, this pentathlon is open only to men. There are pentathlons open for women at the world level, but not in the Olympics.
There are many other pentathlons besides this one, such as the track and field pentathlon.

The Jumping Event
The jump, or halma, was an event in the ancient pentathlon, that could be called a long jump. It was regarded as a very strenuous exercise and as the

banquet was held. In there, athletes brought their families and any other guests they want, to enjoy the feast. They feasted on meat and enjoyed the

On next day, which is fourth day, it was focused on combat sports such as wrestling, boxing, pankration* and running full armour. It begun with
wresting. It was the first events in combat sports, and also first official event in Olympics. In wresting, they did some movements to make their
competitor fall down. Whenever a person fall 3 times, they considered lost. In Greek myths, it is said that heroes were often typically good at
wrestling. At mid–day, there were quite lots of hurts after wresting. Because this sports is quite aggressive and extreme, some people were even killed
during games. Boxers normally focused on opponent's head and face. The fast footwork was necessary for competitor to avoid many hits as possible.

The Original Ancient Olympic Games Essay
The original ancient Olympic Games can be followed back to 776 B.C although per Homer's Iliad they may have existed as early as the twelfth
century BC. The Games proceeded for twelve centuries and were devoted to Olympian deities. Olympia turned into the site of these memorable ancient
Olympic games that scattered the seeds for the most desired global sporting events of current times, the Modern Olympics. The location of the Ancient
Olympics is situated in the western piece of Peloponnese. As per Greek mythology, Peloponnese is the island of Pelops, the Founder of theOlympic
Games. The Ancient Olympic Games were sustained until 393 A.D when Emperor Theodosius I of Rome discontinued them. There were not any
Olympic games for fifteen hundred years before they were resurrected in 1896 in the city of Athens. The man in charge of its resurrection was a
Frenchman named Baron Pierre de Coubertin, who introduced the thought in 1894. His innovative idea was to uncover the present–day Games in 1900
in his local Paris, however appoints from 34 nations were so captivated with the idea that they persuaded him to move the Games up to 1896 and have
Athens serve as the main host.
The antiquated Olympic Games started, when Koroibos, a cook from the close–by city of Elis, won the stadium race, a foot race 600 feet long. This
was the only athletic competition of the Olympics for the initial 13 Olympic games or until 724 BC. The Olympic Games, initially originated to

which he had never competed before the U.S. Olympic trials. Jim Thorpe would go on to win gold in the pentathlon event. Later that day, Jim
competed in the high jump and long jump events. In these events, he placed fourth in high jump, and then took seventh in the long jump. The final
event Jim would participate in during the 1912 Olympics was the decathlon. Thorpe demolished the completion. He placed in the top four in all ten
events. He set an Olympic record of 8,413 that would stand for nearly two decades. As legend has it, as the medals were presented to the athletes, the

The History of Track and Field Essay
Track and Field events, also known as athletics, have progressed a great deal since their birth in Olympus, around the ninth century B.C. More athletes
and more nationalities compete in Track and Field than in any other Olympic sport. Athletics is one of the largest attractions at the Modern Olympics,
drawing in huge crowds of spectators and creating interest at summer Olympics. Track and Field events have come a long way since the Ancient Greek
Olympic games. Many events and techniques have been revised, added, or eliminated since the original Greek Olympics. The Olympic motto, "Citius,
Altius, Fortius" is describing the Track and Field events in Latin. The Latin means " Faster (Swifter), Higher, Stronger," and indicates the running,...

In the data, which is available from that period, it has been shown that the number of footraces was no more than six or seven per Olympic Games.
This has changed greatly in the modern Olympics. The winner of these Ancient Olympic races would be rewarded with an olive branch crown.
Another type of footrace, called the hoplite, was introduced rather late in the history of the Ancient Olympics. The race was of about two "stades"
undertaken while wearing battle armor composed of round shields and plumed helmets. Racing over hurdles was not at all part of the Greeks'
knowledge during the Ancient Olympics. It was established later in the modern Olympic trials.
Another Track and Field event is the long jump. This event differed very greatly from the jumping we see today. The jumpers would have a running
start and be holding weights in their hands for momentum purposes. The use of the weights, which were swung about during the run and jump, caused
the jumper to have a much larger distance than the athletes of the modern Olympics. In fact, the ancient jumping events are highly controversial
because of the ludicrous records found about the distance of the jumps in ancient Greece. One record states that a contestant jumped 55 feet. The
modern record for the running long jump is near 30 feet and it seems to many track and field experts that it would be quite impossible for anyone to
jump 55 feet, even with the help of an impetus. Some

There is no question that there are helpful and harmful attributes to elevation. The argument is whether these effects are enough to cause an unfair
advantage and are they dangerous enough to warrant a rule to be made about it. There are many things that come into question when addressing the
affects elevation has on athletes such as: the effects of air resistance, air density, low oxygen levels, and a weaker gravitational pull (Ward–Smith).
When people think of elevation most people think of in the mountains or thousands of feet in the air. That is not the case. All of these handicaps and
issues can affect athletic events that are held in heights as low as one thousand five hundred feet. At this altitude there is approximately 16% less
oxygen in the air (Altitude). At first glance this does not seem like a big difference but when a highly trained athlete is competing this can be the
difference between a loss or a win. Another measurement of oxygen intake at elevation is the study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology in
1996, trained and untrained cyclists were asked to undergo a Vo2max test, Vo2max is the rate of oxygen consumed during the exercise test, at while at
sea level and again at five hundred and eighty meters. "The result: the effects were negligible in the untrained group, but in the trained group VO2max
dropped by an average of 6.8% due to a fall in arterial oxygen saturation" (Runner's Connect). If a hypothetical athlete is at one hundred

Ancient Greek Athletics, By Stephen G. Miller Essay
Stephen G. Miller, the author of Ancient Greek Athletics and many other academic writings lived a very astounding life. Miller spent a great
portion of his life traveling between the United States and Greece. He went to school to become an archaeologist and afterwards became a
professor at Berkeley and the American School of Classical Studies at Athens. Miller was driven by Plato's love for his work; however, he faced a
minor setback when he realized Plato's language was beyond what he could understand. He then decided to change his studies to archaeology because
of his new–found love for amazing indoor and outdoor work. Miller had a unique perspective on ancient Olympic games because he directed
excavations for multiple years at one of the Panhellenic sanctuary sites. He has written dozens of academic books along with children's books,
therefore I was excited to read this authors rendition of the earliest Olympic Games. Miller's purpose for writing the book Ancient Greek Athletics is to
teach the audience about ancient Greek Games and how this important subject can teach us more about our own world. He accomplishes this goal by
using the artifacts he has studied along with the history itself to guide the audience in their journey toward appreciating Greek heritage. In this book,
Miller addresses the Olympic Games that began more than twenty–five hundred years ago. I learned many different things throughout this book

Personal Narrative: How Track Changed My Life
Track is not just for runners, and I could tell you that. I tore my ACL and Meniscus and still did track. Even though it hurt, even though it took me
six months after my tear to get surgery, somehow and some way I still did it. Also as I, Sophia De Jong, no is really not an option for me, so I did in
fact do track with a torn ligament in my knee. Spring of my junior year in high school, I joined track with wishful thinking. I'm going to do track, run
sprints, and get into great shape for summer. However, with my luck it didn't work out how I wanted. A week into the track season, I went to our
school's field to play a pick–up game of soccer. In the process of going to the field, I had to climb over a fence. Simple? I really should of thought this
through, but didn't. As I jumped over and landed, a loud pop sound came from my knee loud enough for my friends to hear. I sat there crying in
front of my friends for a minute or two, but got up trying to walk it off. As you can see no is not an option for me, as I tried play a soccer game

Reflection On Track And Field
On April 4, 2017 I started my first Track and Field season at Mosinee Middle School and learned a very valuable lesson, but let's not get ahead of

deep thought as my Social Studies teacher started talking after the announcements were done. As soon as I heard this, I knew that I would be in
Track that spring. That day at lunch I asked my friends whether or not any of them were interested in joining Track and Field that season... but
none of them were which made me lonely and wistful. I begged and begged them to join but they kept saying no. " Please join Track. I'll be so
lonely if you don't," I told them beggingly. "No, we said we didn't want to," they stated sternly. I didn't let this stop me though I pestered them until
one of them finally said that they would join. Because of this I was ecstatic that I would not feel lonely. Even though I ended up making even more
friends in Track than just hanging out with the friend I pestered to join. The next day, was Track and Field sign ups in the lobby of the creske gym.

Sexual Equality For Women In The 1920's
Track is more complex than just running to see who has the fastest time, throwing the farthest, or jumping the highest. Track is about overcoming
physical obstacles that challenge you, which mentally makes one stronger. The 1920's was a time of rising sports popularity which ultimately resulted
in sexual equality for women. Track contributed to these improvements by including women in sports, exposing positive physical features of women,
and set higher expectations for females other than cooking and cleaning .
Women had to face many difficulties that held them back in various categories in the 1900's, whether it was education, getting a job, or owning
property. When the 1920's arrived there were several new opportunities that helped women prosper, even though it wasn't simple. In 1920 women were
allowed to vote which was a crucial and ground– breaking event that finally became reality. Some may think about track as just a sport and

The Olympic Games were held every four years at the same place, the Sanctuary of Zeus at Olympia, to honor Zeus. Most Greeks believed in the same
group of Gods, though they did acknowledge that Zeus was the king of the Gods. That is why they worshiped him at the Games, by worshiping him

Personal Narrative: La Necia Race
In the year of 2017, the month of May was the upcoming state meet held in the lower south of Georgia. Being a 17 year old who is very arrogant
about her work that she's accomplished on the track. La'Necia was only weeks away from the biggest meet of her life, "crunch time" like her
coach would always say. Practice after practice, pop off after pop off, and hurdle after hurdle knowing very confident that she was ready for the
race. She thought to herself "there's not anyone that can stop me from winning first place at this meet." The day she was set to leave Atlanta was so
much fun she felt as if it was a vacation having days of not doing anything but running. On the bus and hours of driving feel so long sleeping most of

ready for their race; she got nervous feeling butterflies in her stomach, not knowing what to really expect today while consequently the race. Once we
got to the track, everything that was a thought changed, she didn't know what was going to happen now when starting the 300 hurdles race.... Show

hurdle after hurdle all the nervousness that was there soon was gone. Knowing how she was doing as the race went on while observing around

about 20–mitters left one girl passing by things start rushing to mind, I lost , i let my coach down crossing the finish line in fourth place Lanecia soon

  • 2. Argumentative Essay On Track And Field The playing conditions on various fields back when Jacqueline did track and field was way different back then. Jacqueline explains the playing conditions on the various of fields she played on. "It was suitable for me back in the day, but now my high school has a official track and field turf v.s the dirt field I ran on." The impact of these early experiences with track and field and reflecting back on the improvements done to the fields are consistent with Beard and Green study on the role of turfgrasses on environmental protection and it's benefit to humans. Both authors explains "The erosion control effectiveness of turfgrass is the combined result of a high shoot density and root mass for surface soil stabilization, plus a high biomass matrix that provides resistance to lateral surface water flow, thus slowing otherwise potentially erosive water velocities. Therefore, perennial turfgrasses offer one of the most cost–efficient methods to control water and wind erosion of soil. Such control is very important in eliminating dust and mud problems around homes, factories, schools, and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 4. The Olympic Games Of Ancient Greek Athletics Stephen G. Miller, an expert Yale professor in the field of Ancient Greek athletics states that the Olympics were held "in honor of Zeus in the city of Olympia" (Miller). "The element of religion is evident in this historical event. Many people have heard of the concepts of the Greek Gods, but this level of religious involvement is interesting. These games were held "for four days every fourth summer", a tradition that partially continues to this day (Miller). "Many festivals in ancient Greece were dedicated to the Gods" (Miller). In addition to the Olympic Games, there were also other athletic festivals which included the Pythian Games at Delphi, the Isthmian at Corinth, and the Nemean at Argos (Miller). However, the Olympics atOlympia were "the oldest and most prestigious of the four great ancient Greek athletic festivals. The height of the Olympic Games occurs between the fifth and fourth centuries B.C. During this period, the games became more and more professionalized until they provoked much censure during the Roman period (Miller). This is somewhat similar to the present day games where the competitors are supposed to be amateurs, but many are professionals at their craft. Take for example the United States basketball squad. For decades this team has consisted of the best professionals the country has to offer. This is still a tradition, or problem, the games experience today. The Greek games were very nationalistic and it is said that "states were said to have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the pentathlon, students gain extra information from all different subjects, leaving the students to have to understand the topic. Because of this, students will need to have the potential to learn multiple subjects at once. Adding onto this, I have the ability to learn many subjects and manage myself, but that is not what makes me special. The key that makes me unique is understanding the material that is given and being able to explain it to another person, sharing knowledge with the world. In fact, colleges look for academic success, such as the best grades, and talent in all areas. Adding onto this, McGarvin's pentathlon acceptance is also based on the student's grades and talent, whether it's a musical or athletic ability. Based on this information, I have some musical talent, but I have more athletic talent. The musical talent that I was born with was a strong voice, able to go as high as a soprano and as low as an alto singer. This year in chorus, the teacher gave out solos for a song as she recommended me to do it. Therefore, I am singing a solo to demonstrate my voice with the world. Although this may seem very simple, I decided to practice more often than other people, for I came in during lunch and after school for the whole month. This is to show my dedication towards music, plus all my other classes. Adding onto my musical quality, this month, December, I am planning to take piano lessons. The reason for this would be because to make a song the most pleasant sound comes from a piano, voice, and lyrics. The second reason for playing the piano would be for college, for playing an instrument and having singing experience would boost up my chances of getting accepted. Going on to my athletic experience, I am experienced in three sports: basketball, soccer, and tennis. In basketball, I naturally have a gift in being skilled, so I practice every so often to keep up with my talent. In soccer, I have been on a team that was very well organized, but I stopped being on the team after a year because I wanted to vary sports that I played. For tennis, I play every other week with my cousin because it is enjoyable and I am very skilled and experienced player. After having musical and athletic talent, I had to vary my time between my extracurricular activities and school. Because of all the practice, I gain an important skill known as ... Representing one fifth of the pentathlon event, the discus throw was a popular Olympic event. It was later incorporated into the modern Olympics at the time of their conception in 1896 (Encyclopedia Brittanica 1). • 11. My Last Year In High School My last year in high–school. My last regional track meet. My last throw. Everything I had been working towards for the last four years came down to this very moment. On a scorching hot spring day, weary and patient athletes from all across Oklahoma gathered in Cordell around a concrete ring; watching intently as the furthest discus thrower in the region arrived at his final throw. All attempts before this had landed outside the throwing boundaries, so they did not count. This increased the pressure tenfold as I grabbed the metal disc that was to be my last chance at State. I slowly stepped into the ring, took a deep breath, and shifted my weight onto the balls of my feet to prepare for the final toss. In this one moment, all of my experiences that brought me to this place rushed forward in my mind. ***
In my freshman year, I was a big basketball player, but I often found myself bored in the spring time due to my lack of participation in school activities. My friend, Grant, came up to me in the hall one day. "Hey, Cade! You should come throw discus with me in Track. It's a pretty fun sport and we have a grill to cook food on. You can't turn down free food can you?" This, combined with the opportunity to miss a lot of school, convinced me to sign up for a sport I had never even heard of. Baker's goal is to educate readers on the differences between the ancient Greek Olympic Games, and today's modern Olympic Games. William Baker not only explains the physical aspects of the games , but the relationship between the Greek religion and the Olympic games as well. William Baker's article follows his thesis well; which was, "Virtually everyone knows that the modern Olympics are patterned on the Olympic Games of ancient Greece, yet few people have more than a hazy understanding of the original Olympics".(article,pp58) William Baker wrote the "Organized Greek Games" in chronological order. An example of Baker writing the article chronologically, is when William Baker describes the Greek game 's schedule, and the events that were planned for each day in order. "the duration of the festival was set at five days, with only two and a half days devoted to the games themselves. the first day was given to religious ceremonies."(article,pp61) In the "Organized Greek Games" William Baker quotes Socrates,"the body must bear its part in whatever man; and in all the services required from the body, it is of the utmost importance to have it in the best possible condition."(pp.65) Baker got the information from primary sources. • 13. The Event Of The Olympic Games The Olympic games have become a worldwide event that is watched by millions of people who are either physically sitting in the stands, or sitting at home on their couches. These games bring people from countries all around the world together where they can forget about their problems for a couple of days every two years. Over time, the games have been being banned, have overcome gender discrimination, and had conflicts with many major historical events. The first ancient Olympic games were held in Olympia, Greece in 776 BC. The Greek people worshipped the gods, and the idea of these games came from the need to have something to dedicate to them. The Greeks used the city of Olympia as a place for worship, and as a meeting place for religious and political practices. At first, the games were only played for one day, but in 684 BC they were extended to three days, then during the 5th century BC, the games were changed to last five days. Status was not a factor when it came to who could participate in the games; any free male citizen was allowed to participate. Women, however, were forbidden to participate in, or be a spectator at, the games if they were married, but women who were unmarried were allowed to be spectators. The ancient Olympics only consisted of seven events: long jump, discus throw, running, shot put, boxing, horse and chariot races, and pankration (a mixture of boxing and wrestling in a type of martial arts) (Ancient Olympic Games). The Original Ancient Olympic Games Essay The original ancient Olympic Games can be followed back to 776 B.C although per Homer's Iliad they may have existed as early as the twelfth century BC. The Games proceeded for twelve centuries and were devoted to Olympian deities. Olympia turned into the site of these memorable ancient Olympic games that scattered the seeds for the most desired global sporting events of current times, the Modern Olympics. The location of the Ancient Olympics is situated in the western piece of Peloponnese. As per Greek mythology, Peloponnese is the island of Pelops, the Founder of theOlympic Games. The Ancient Olympic Games were sustained until 393 A.D when Emperor Theodosius I of Rome discontinued them. There were not any Olympic games for fifteen hundred years before they were resurrected in 1896 in the city of Athens. The man in charge of its resurrection was a Frenchman named Baron Pierre de Coubertin, who introduced the thought in 1894. His innovative idea was to uncover the present–day Games in 1900 in his local Paris, however appoints from 34 nations were so captivated with the idea that they persuaded him to move the Games up to 1896 and have Athens serve as the main host. The antiquated Olympic Games started, when Koroibos, a cook from the close–by city of Elis, won the stadium race, a foot race 600 feet long. Another type of footrace, called the hoplite, was introduced rather late in the history of the Ancient Olympics. The race was of about two "stades" undertaken while wearing battle armor composed of round shields and plumed helmets. Racing over hurdles was not at all part of the Greeks' knowledge during the Ancient Olympics. It was established later in the modern Olympic trials. Another Track and Field event is the long jump. This event differed very greatly from the jumping we see today. The jumpers would have a running start and be holding weights in their hands for momentum purposes. The use of the weights, which were swung about during the run and jump, caused the jumper to have a much larger distance than the athletes of the modern Olympics. In fact, the ancient jumping events are highly controversial because of the ludicrous records found about the distance of the jumps in ancient Greece. There are many things that come into question when addressing the affects elevation has on athletes such as: the effects of air resistance, air density, low oxygen levels, and a weaker gravitational pull (Ward–Smith). When people think of elevation most people think of in the mountains or thousands of feet in the air. That is not the case. All of these handicaps and issues can affect athletic events that are held in heights as low as one thousand five hundred feet. • 30. The Olympic Games : The Ancient Olympics Essay Although the original ancient Olympic Games can be traced back to 776 B.C, Homer's Iliad indicates they may have existed as early as the twelfth century BC. The Games were then continued for twelve centuries and were devoted to Olympian deities. Olympia turned into the site of these memorable ancient Olympic games that scattered the seeds for the largest global sporting events of current times, the Modern Olympics. The location of the Ancient Olympics is situated in the western part of Peloponnese. The Ancient Olympic Games continued until 393 A.D when Emperor Theodosius I of Rome discontinued them. There were not any more Olympic games for fifteen hundred years before they were resurrected in 1896 in the city of Athens. The man in charge of the recreation of the Olympic games was a Frenchman named Baron Pierre de Coubertin, who introduced the thought in 1894. He proposed to stage the games in Paris in 1900 but representatives, from thirty–four nations were so captivated with the idea that they persuaded him to move the Games up to 1896 and have Athens serve as the host. The ancient Olympic Games started when Koroibos, a cook from the close–by city of Elis, won the 600 feet long foot race in the stadium. This race was the only athletic competition of the Olympics for the initial thirteen Olympic games until 724 BC. • 33. Ancient Greek Athletics, By Stephen G. Miller Essay Stephen G. Miller, the author of Ancient Greek Athletics and many other academic writings lived a very astounding life. Miller spent a great portion of his life traveling between the United States and Greece. He went to school to become an archaeologist and afterwards became a professor at Berkeley and the American School of Classical Studies at Athens. Miller was driven by Plato's love for his work; however, he faced a minor setback when he realized Plato's language was beyond what he could understand. He then decided to change his studies to archaeology because of his new–found love for amazing indoor and outdoor work. Miller had a unique perspective on ancient Olympic games because he directed excavations for multiple years at one of the Panhellenic sanctuary sites. He has written dozens of academic books along with children's books, therefore I was excited to read this authors rendition of the earliest Olympic Games. Miller's purpose for writing the book Ancient Greek Athletics is to teach the audience about ancient Greek Games and how this important subject can teach us more about our own world. He accomplishes this goal by using the artifacts he has studied along with the history itself to guide the audience in their journey toward appreciating Greek heritage. In this book, Miller addresses the Olympic Games that began more than twenty–five hundred years ago. I learned many different things throughout this book including: the participants, all the different athletic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I begged and begged them to join but they kept saying no. " Please join Track. I'll be so lonely if you don't," I told them beggingly. "No, we said we didn't want to," they stated sternly. I didn't let this stop me though I pestered them until one of them finally said that they would join. Because of this I was ecstatic that I would not feel lonely.
