Sound plays an important role in films, providing 90% of the audio experience. There are several types of sounds used in movies, including dialogue between characters, ambient natural sounds of the environment, narration, soundtrack music, additional recorded dialogue, and sound effects. Sound establishes mood, enhances realism, and provides crucial context and information to viewers.

2. WHAT IS SOUND?
 Sound is everything that we can hear in a movie-
this could include dialogue, sound effects or music.
It is used in films to emphasise emotions or provide
us with extra information about the location of a
scene, the persona of a character or to give the
audience more insight into a plot.
 FACT:
 90% of a motion picture is sound. (The audience
can only look at one picture at a time yet they can
hear dozens of distinct sounds all at the same
time.)

4. DIALOGUE
 Dialogue is the conversation between characters it
constructs them as an individual or real person
rather than an imaginary creation of a story teller.
Dialogue serves the purpose of telling the story and
expressing the motivation/feelings of the character.

5. AMBIENT OR NATURAL SOUND
 Ambient sound is the background sound within a
scene which the characters are aware of. This can
include the sound of wind, crowds, traffic, birds and
rain. It is a fundamental part of a film as it has a
number of functions.
 It provides audio continuity between shots.
 It creates a sense of realism
 Eliminates any unnatural silence or sound which
are not relevant to the scene.
 It establishes/reinforces the mood.

6. NARRATION, SCORE, ADDITIONAL DIALOGUE
RECORDING.
 Narration; the voice of the person that is heard
speaking but not seen on camera.
 Score; original music that is created for the film and
plays at different points throughout the movie.
 Additional dialogue recording; This is when
something ruins the dialogue during shooting for
example the noise of a plane.

7. SOUNDTRACK
 The music that accompanies a scene, this means
that it sets the tone for the specific scene or action
and even when dialogue is not present the
soundtrack can provide us with an insight into the
major part of the story or the feelings of a character.
 To construct a good scene it is important that the
soundtrack relates to what is wanting to be
portrayed for example if a scene is sad slower and
more depressing music will be played.

8. SOUND EFFECTS
 Sounds which are added to a film after the production
stage in order to increase the impact and potential
meaning of the particular moments within a film.
 The purpose of sound effects;
 simulating reality; e.g. in a drunken street fight our hero is hit over the head with a bottle. The
bottle is fake, however it becomes real with the addition of a sound effect of a really bottle
smashing, from the sound editors library.
 Creating illusion; e.g. A teenager is sitting in the living room. The door opens and her mum
walks into the room. With help from various sound effects it is possible to alert the audience that
the mother has driven up to the house, parker her car, walked to the door and use her key to
open it. None of this actually happened, the illusion was created by using realistic sound
effects.
 Creating mood; e.g.; a couple sit around a small campfire, the mood of the campfire is warm. If
you add an of seen bird singing, the mood becomes lonely. If the owl is replaced with a howling
wolf, the scene seems more dangerous and finally if you replace it with a gun shot, it is
indicating that's human is near, which could provoke a sense of fear and despair.
