Analysis Of Kill A Mockingbird By Harper Lee
Do you have the courage to stand up for good when evil lingers all around? To Kill a Mockingbird is set in the town of Maycomb, Alabama, during
the great depression, while facing social status discrimination, racial discrimination, prejudices, and stereotyping. However, there remained courage by
some to see good in all. While Atticus Finch was of a higher social status as an attorney in Maycomb, he always displayed the courage to stand up for
what was right, or for good, even when evil lingered in the shadows. While this story was from great depression, these same issues are still in the world
today. Prejudices and stereotyping are very common especially when one looks, or dresses, or talks differently than others. Courage comes into play
when one is willing to stand up for those being criticized or for those perceived as being a lower social status. Having courage can show more about a
person and who one is regardless of social status even if it is a lower social status.
Courage can be viewed or displayed in many ways. Atticus Finch displayed courage when he agreed to take Tom Robinson's case even though he
knew the townspeople of Maycomb would take the side of a low class white man over that of a decent black man. In his discussion with his son Jem,
Atticus said "There's something in our world that makes men lose their heads – they couldn't be fair if they tried. In our courts, when it's a white man's
word against a black man's, the white man always wins. They're

Essay on Epilepsy
Epilepsy
Epilepsy is not what you think. It is a complicated disease, a disease that doesn't just affect one type of person or age. Over fifty million men, women,
and children cope with this disease daily. Epilepsy is a mysterious disease to those who are unfamiliar and uneducated about the disease. Many people
have preconceived notions about Epileptics. Researching the topic thoroughly, the five preconceived notions I explored have been proven to be false.
People uneducated about Epilepsy may have confused thoughts on what it really is. People have these "notions," which are partly or entirely not true.
So, throughout this research paper, these notions will be proven untrue, mostly by factual information given by ... Show more content on

Myth #2: Epileptics look a certain way. Most people think Epileptics look different or "weird." False, an Epileptic looks the same as a normal human
being, except when they are having a seizure. In some cases Epileptics don't have seizures, so those people will always go unidentified. A majority of
the people who have severe Epilepsy wear a medical bracelet to inform paramedics of their health. Besides a medical alert bracelet it is nearly
impossible to tell the differences between an Epileptic and a Non–Epileptic.
Myth #3: Only children have Epilepsy, or you have to be born with Epilepsy to have it. Once upon a time people began the belief that children are
the only people who can have the disease. False, men, women, and children can have this disease. Epilepsy is not confined to a certain age or gender.
People can acquire this disease by heredity, or by a severe head trauma. Adults are not excluded because they may experience tumors, strokes, cysts, or
infections sometime in their lives, which would cause post–traumatic Epilepsy. Children on the other hand, were once believed to be the sole carriers
of the disease, probably because children can grow out of it. Children who have Epilepsy have one specific treatment options available to them, which
is not available for adults. The Ketogenic diet, a diet high in protein and low in carbohydrates has worked to stop

Fashion by Anna Mowatt
In the 19th century play, FASHION, Anna Mowatt develops the character plot as a contrast and comparison between being "natural" and "artificial
in a world becoming preoccupied with fashion, and being fashionable. In the head notes, it was stated that Daniel Havens said FASHION is "the
ugly image of the American Dream gone sour." (Watt and Richardson) Fashion has a complex definition. The word 'fashion' can mean anything from
the type of clothes you wear, how you communicate with others, the place you live, how you present yourself, or who you associate yourself with. In
FASHION, Mowatt took a comical yet sober look at the definitions of "fashion," applied it to real life in 1845, and through her characters, provides a
mirror with which an... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In a present day version of FASHION, Zeke could easily be portrayed as a friend who often visits the Tiffany's. Alternatively, he could also be an
employee of theirs as a handyman, or plumber, etc. This would provide a current day perspective of the poorer economic class of Zeke's character.
Moral Character – Living in the country or the city?: There are certainly differences of opinion whether it is better to live in the City or in the
Country. In FASHION, it was very evident that Mowatt's character, 'Trueman' was an advocate proclaiming that living in the country keeps the
morals and values of America pure and untainted. Near the end of the play, Trueman tells Mr. Tiffany, "You must sell your house and all these gew
gaws, and bundle your wife and daughter off to the country. There let them learn economy, true independence, and home virtues, instead of foreign
follies." In the case of Mrs. Tiffany and Seraphina, this antidote was truly what they needed. This does not make it true for everyone. I am sure
many feel this way about city life vs. country life today. However, there are pros and cons to both; neither life guarantees economy, independence
virtue, honor, or a happier existence. Therefore, I do not believe there is a clear cut solution to whether one life is more coveted than the other. Some
believe that living in the country is better because you are not exposed to the "fast" life that city dwelling has to offer. Many believe country life has less

Humanity and Social Forces
Humanity has been trying to formulate an answer to the question of why we do what we do for years and years. The field of psychology searches for
the answer within us, that is to say, they examine the internal forces that make us do what we do. However, sociology searches for the answer in terms
of external forces. Sociology sets out to prove that human behavior is controlled by forces of social interaction, while in turn the behaviors of
humans control the forces of social interaction in a cycle that controls many aspects of life. The way in which people behave and conduct their lives
can be based on a plethora of factors such as social stratification. Through social stratification people are grouped into social "layers" based on their
property, power, and prestige (Henslin). Social locations also play an important role in human behavior.Social class divides people based on income,
education, and occupation (Henslin). Social statuses allow division and labeling based upon different positions that someone occupies. For example,
a man is the CEO of a corporation, therefore one of his statuses is CEO, which may cause others to treat him differently because of his status. Not
only does his status influence the people's behavior around him, it also influences his own behavior as a result of how he is treated. However, while
some social statuses are given, others you are born with. The term "ascribed status" is used to describe a status with which one is born, such as gender

The Pros And Cons Of Nonconvulsive Status Epilepticus
Many studies have suggested that managing nonconvulsive status epilepticus (NCSE) presents many challenges, which would benefit from additional
early measures to predict patient outcomes. Non–convulsive status epilepticus (NCSE) is status epilepticus without obvious tonic–clonic activity.
NCSE is now known to be a heterogeneous disease with a variety of reasons, several subtypes (Shenker and Foundation 2003). In the mental status

The New Symbolic Consumers For Fashion Brands
5. Discussion The study has followed several sets of key previous research findings and contributed to the new symbolic consumers' model as
explained in the following seven arguments. First, Baudrillard' (1993, 1994, 1998) theory, symbolic consumption, as a focal notion of the study, is
found to be a good foundation to understand consumers' purchasing decisions for fashion brands. The findings show that consumers choose brands
which have relevance or desired 'symbolic value' for them. Not only Baudrillard, the findings are also in line with the studies of Dittmar (1992, 1994,
2004, 2008), Elliott & Wattanasuwan (1998a) and Wattanasuwan (2003, 2005) regarding how consumers use fashion products; symbolic consumption
is used to represent actual self–identity, and also to create ideal self–identity. Furthermore, Baudrillard's sign system can be applied to explicate the
process of the signification of fashion brands. The sign system leads to a new model of symbolic consumers, which is used to illustrate the
interrelationship between all consumer influences. Baudrillard proposed that consumers from different backgrounds interpret fashion symbolism
differently. The findings revealed that fashion brands' marketing elements are translated based on respondents' experience. The findings also support
Grubb and Grathwohl's (1967) model stating that the signification of fashion goods is generated by the symbolic exchange transactions of groups.
Hence, internal and external influences

The School Drop Out Phenomena
In Uruguay, between one out of three and one out of four children that enroll in secondary school do not graduate. For a country that used to exhibit
high education levels and more than tripled its education expenditure per student in the last ten years, being just above Latin American standards
appears as anything but a success.
Several studies dug in the cause and nature of such an evolution. One particular finding called for the attention of researchers: the probability of an
adolescent leaving their studies exhibit two peaks, one at 15 years old and the other at 18. There seems to be a period of relative calm between ages 15
and 18 in terms of school dropping. (1)
Quite an odd shape for that process. Why is it that student feelings about education along the adolescence present this U shape? Are subjects being
taught in those particular years less interesting than others? Are them more difficult? Why such an important and long term decision goes back and
forth during adolescence?
The school drop–out phenomena has been widely researched but it still remains in the shades. Pouring money into the education system does not seem
enough to solve the issue. Despite efforts of teachers some children still underestimate the benefits of studying. Or at least they do not feel the payoff
big enough for the effort they do.
A humongous amount of hard data proves that for teens it is not a wise decision to abandon their studies. Nevertheless, simply telling them that, does

The Ethical Issue of Participants Giving Informed Consent...
Ethical Issues: One major ethical issue before a study can be conducted is that participants must give informed consent before they participate. The
Nuremburg Code from 1947 says that individuals must give voluntary consent if the study is associated with human subjects (Saks & Allsop, 2007).
Therefore, according to the code, the elderly patients have the right to refuse participation and I cannot and do not have the right to influence or ask
these patients to participate. Elderly patients must give informed consent before the interviews are conducted and agree to provide information to the
study. Ethical approval from the institutional review board on campus will be acquired before the start of the study. There is an agency in Canada that
consists of the CIHR, SSHRC, and the NSERC, with the purpose of governing research ethics. The autonomy of participants in the study must be
respected and that they should be able to decide whether or not to take part in the research without being interference. All aspects of the study must be
explained to the elderly patients, such as the purpose, risks/harm, and benefits. Although there may not be physical harm from this study, there can be
psychological harm due to elderly patients bringing up the social issues they face and how it connects with the issue. Participants also have the right to
withdraw from the study or withdraw data that has been collected on them at any time (CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC, 2010). Another ethical issue is

The First Mode Of Assessment
In schools, there are two major modes of assessment that are given to students. The first mode is formative assessment which involves an on–going
day–to–day process that involves various techniques such as observing student performance, oral questioning, and self and peer assessment. The second
mode of assessment is summative assessment which is typically given at the end of a term or school year. Its purpose is to give information about what
the students have accomplished within a certain period of time (Education Bureau, 2013). With summative assessment, there are two major methods of
administrating assessments. The first method, the pencil–and–paper test, has been used for many years and is the most commonly used. This method
involves test takers reading questions that are on paper and responding in writing. The second method, the computer–based test, is a newer method that
has increased in use more recently with the advent of better computer technology. Computer–based testing involves any type of assessment that is
completed using a computer (Ahluwalia, 2008).
There are a number of pros for using computer–based testing over pencil–and–paper testing. Computer testing is more affordable because it does not
involve the costs of paper and printing associated with pencil–and–paper tests (Hovland, 2005). In comparison to pencil–and–paper tests, scoring is
easier and students can also receive instant feedback with computer testing (Parshall, 2002). Pencil–and–paper tests also

The Effects Of Socioeconomics On Children 's Children
Imagine a boy that has been teased mercilessly by his peers throughout his schooling because of his clothes and his free and reduced lunch status. He is
constantly under pressure from peers to have the newest and niftiest gadgets; nevertheless, his mother cannot afford to provide food and permanent
housing, much less, these extra luxuries. Therefore, he has to comprise with what his mother can afford. She tries to provide for her children and wants
to offer them the world. Nonetheless, due to her economic situation, she cannot provide her for children adequately; they are forced to ask for aid from
the government, close family, and friends. This situation brings light to the turmoil that socioeconomics brings upon children and that they need to
endure to survive in this society. When it comes to socioeconomics, children are the utmost affected. Socioeconomics has long term effects, prevalently
distresses children in school and in development. Through my friend's experience that he has shared with me, it has allowed me to notice the
harrowing effects that socioeconomics has on children. First, one may ask exactly what is socioeconomic status and other terms that surround this
issue? Socioeconomic status can be defined as "an overall ranking of a person's position in society based on income, education, and occupation"
(Benokraitis, 2014, p. 142). Socioeconomic status can further be simplified in saying it is a classification system that is forced upon all people within a

The Cherry Orchard By Anton Chekov
"The measure of who we are is what we do with what we have." As demonstrated by this quotation from Vince Lombardi, a reflection of our worth
derives from the effort we put forward. Stories of successful citizens rising from the unknown to fame, or poverty to wealth shows the "common man"
that if they desire a similar outcome, there exists a possibility of attaining a higher social status. Occasionally, as depicted in the play The Cherry
Orchard by Anton Chekov, instances where honest means to attain fortune occasionally arise. By utilizing dialogue and direction, action, and images,
he makes clear the dishonest motives of the character Lopakhin, especially within the third act. In order to obtain a new status within society,
Lopakhin creates chaos in order to ensure his future differs from his past, while controlling the destiny of those who indirectly oppressed him through
the development of a motive and acting on his personal desires with no regard for the people around him.Without an initial conversation regarding
development, there exists no possibility for change. David Ball, the author of Backwards and Forwards: A Technical Manual for Reading Plays
mentions, "Talking is drama's most common activity." (Ball 27) then proceeds to question the statement to continue his point by asking, "What is it
about talking that connects it to recognizable human behavior?" resulting in his answer of "A human being talks in order to get what he or she wants."
(27). Within a play,

The first discussion is about Terri's ex husband, Ed. Ed is the guy she was with before Mel McGinnis. It is a sad story. She says, that night Ed beat
her, he told her, "Ilove you, I love you, you bitch" while he pulled her around the room. Terri considers that what Ed felt for her was love. And then

The tropical rain–forests that horticulturalists inhabit are tough environments for cultivation due to the uproar of trees and little sunshine penetrating

Child Poverty : Where Will They End Up?
Child in Poverty, Where Will They End Up? A child in poverty can have negative and positive effects on their opportunity for social mobility, as
oppose to a child that is born in a higher class. It is believed that if you are born into a poor family you will stay poor. It's very hard to move up from
your social status if you have very little to begin with. The effects that poverty has on a child's opportunity are things like not being able to get a
higher education, having and not having the motivation to strive for better opportunities because of situation their family is in, and will not have as
many opportunities as a child born into a family of a higher social status. Children who live in poverty will not be living in the nicer neighborhoods.
In result, they will not be attending the best schools. Many times the child does not seem ready for school. They lack the desire, or ability to
comprehend the material. "Children from low–income families often do not receive the stimulation and do not learn the social skills required to
prepare them for school."(Brooks–Gunn, Duncan, Page 61) The best schools are most likely in the neighborhoods where there are less crimes and
more money. Those kids have more opportunities available to them like computers, better quality books, and more qualified teachers. If you go to a
school that does not have those resources, what are the chances of that child having a better social status than that of a kid who did? "More than 30

Alyssa relates to this because of her love for expanding her knowledge and finding new concepts. This also relates to another book Ignorance,

because of her curiosity in science. I think this book shows how scientists stay happy in their field, by not searching for answers, but continually
asking questions. Alyssa 's love for science is reflected in her curiosity, as being her roommate and throughout the interview, she showed a love for

which is completely contrasting is the play The Best of Everything. I think this play is very different to me and my fellow colleague's because sexism

The Value of a College Degree
For many families, the idea that higher education for themselves or their children will automatically improve their social or economic status is a
common one. In many situations this can be the case, however it is not universal. Additionally, many factors come into play when analyzing how
intergenerational mobility does or does not occur. Some of these factors include existing social class, field of study, undergraduate vs. advanced
degrees, race or gender, selection of institution, and parental resources. The general hypothesis of this study is "Is a College Degree Still the Great
Equalizer?"
This issue was the source of study by Florencia Torche at New YorkUniversity. Using different cohort groups and conducting various survey methods,

However, this intergenerational status association is weaker among women. In the case of earnings mobility, a similar U–shaped pattern emerges. In
cases of earnings distribution, those at the extreme ends of educational distribution show the strongest association (i.e. individuals with less than a
college degree and advanced degree holders) indicating, "a college degree appears to still be a great equalizer among BA holders but not among
advanced–degree holders" (Torche, 2011). So far, the analysis of intergenerational mobility as it relates to class, occupational status, and earnings has
been restricted to labor market forces.
When family income mobility is studied, other factors are taken into account such as non–occupational resources and family–level processes. Specific
examples that were taken into account included parental transfers of wealth and intergenerational reproduction as it relates to occupational mobility.
While the results of this area of study closely resemble previously discussed results, one interesting point emerges. "The influence of parental income on
sons' income level is substantial among those without a college degree, it declines to insignificance among college graduates, and then it regains
strength among advanced degree holders..." (Torche, 2011). This brings to light the issue of horizontal

Stress And Academic Achievement Between Blue Ribbon...
Stress and Perfectionism in Academic Achievement Between Blue Ribbon Schools vs. Non–blue Ribbon Schools Erin Altenberger Northern Kentucky
University Abstract Stress and Perfectionism in Academic Achievement Between Blue Ribbon Schools vs. Non–blue Ribbon Schools Damian, Stoeber,
Negru, and Baban (2014), describes perfectionism as endeavoring for flawlessness and setting extremely high standards for oneself. There is not just
one type of perfectionism; there are in fact three different categories of perfectionism. The three categories included self–oriented, other–oriented, and
socially prescribed perfectionism. Self–oriented perfectionism refers to an individual that sets and seeks high standards of performance for themselves
(Chang, 2006). Chang (2006) describes other–oriented perfectionism as an individual that assumes that others should be perfect in their actions.
Socially prescribed perfectionism refers to an individual that believes that those around them anticipate perfectionism from him or her (Chang, 2006).
With what we know about perfectionism and the potential distress it may cause, one can consider that stress could be a component with
perfectionism. Pope (2005) portrays stress as the perceived shortcomings between demands and the accessibility of resources to meet those demands.
Stress is a feeling that affects people of all ages. Stress impacts people in a large array of ways, which include emotionally, physically, and mentally

The Kushner 's The Flamethrowers Essay
Rachel Kushner's The Flamethrowers displays how the economic status or social rank can indeed affect someone like Reno, who is the main
character, but also to the other characters that are surrounded by her. From significant class differences causes this character to experience mental
distress and/or serve as a source of tension or conflict with others that is presented as oppression and resistance. This also can be referred by
"Marxist Criticism", which according to the Online Writing Lab at Purdue University, Marxist criticism looks closely at a character's economic

she is given an unforgettable chance to achieve social mobility through her given opportunity to ride the Spirit of Italy. For Reno, driving the Spirit of

The Lesson By Toni Cade Bambara
Throughout the years knowledge and culture has been passed down within generations. Elders within the community often teach life lessons to the
young adults growing up in the neighborhood. This idea still holds true today, especially in low–income communities. People from different
socioeconomic backgrounds live different lifestyles they also have different opportunities made available to them. Because of this idea, people
with a higher social standing have an advantage over those in lower class standings. Social classes divide the people of our nation and have
existed for as long as we can remember. The American Dream created the American nation that we know today. The dream itself is different for
each individual. Money plays a major part in the American Dream because to be successful in America means to bear great wealth. We live in a
nation, in which money controls our very existence. "The Lesson" by Toni Cade Bambara creates an argument about society's unfairness that
involves financial opportunities by revealing the differences in living environments between upper class and lower class. "The Lesson" is a very
well written fragment of the past. This is a story from New York's inner city of Harlem where children did not have substantial education much less
the money to obtain it. Not only is this story about a poor girl out of place in an expensive toy store, it is also a social commentary that teaches

Global Drug Policy
The global policy on drugs has one main concern, as maintained in the first clause of the 1961 UN Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs: promoting
the health and welfare of mankind (United Nations, 1961). The convention and global drug policy actors have asserted through the years that drugs
pose a threat to this concern, and so an integrated effort to reduce supply, demand and trafficking of said narcotics is the desired course of action
(High Level segment Commission on Narcotic Drugs, 2009). It seems that this course of action became an end of itself instead of a mean to an end of
health and welfare, as mounting evidence shows that the actions taken to achieve this have not only been ineffective in reducing supply, demand and
trafficking; they have also created severe violations of human rights, alongside criminalization, a hazard to public health, and drug cartels which pose a
very real threat to peace and security.
Member states have not been oblivious to the fact that the measures taken have been counterproductive, and an increasing number of states are
dissatisfied with the results of this policy (Doward, 2013). Some have addressed this by decriminalizing possession and use of drugs and introducing
harm reduction programs, considering the issue of demand not a criminal issue but a public health one. The evidence in favor of such programs was
acknowledged by international bodies such as WHO and UNODC, emphasizing that reducing demand should be done through means of

harmful effects of corporal punishment on the physical, cognitive, and psychosocial development of children in early childhood which ranges from two
to six years of age. In many countries such as China, corporal punishment represents an acceptable and necessary action to discipline children.
However, in other nations such as Austria, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Germany, Finland, Israel, Italy, New Zealand, Norway, and Sweden, corporal
punishment is against the law (Berger, 2012, p. 310). Currently, corporal punishment against children are legal in many U.S. states. Corporal
punishment on children is more common in southern states and families of lower socioeconomic status compared to states in the New England region
and families of higher socioeconomic status (Berger, 2012, p. 310). Corporal punishment has destructive effects on the physical aspects of early
childhood development. As

The Role of Witchcraft in the Social Order
The newest generation in western society is being partially raised by films, literature, and music. Pop culture is taking a bigger and bigger role in the
upbringing of today's children. Images like Harry Potter flying on his broomstick during a game of quidditch, or the old lady from Brave creating
potions. To the majority of Western Society, these situations are used for entertainment purposes, but many tribes and villages still believe in the power
of witchcraft and see it as an enormous threat. Weather witchcraft is still prevalent for religious reasons, old school beliefs, or economic motives, the
fact still remains that it is used to show order and give power to those who are willing to give up a life to take it. With modern ... Show more content on

Because slaves were always in a household and could not speak up because of their social and economic status, the blame was often put of them
regarding illness or poor fortune (Cassar, 1993:317). Often slaves were put in a jail cell once a year to remind them of their social standing in society
(Cassar, 1993:329).The opposite side of this social blaming system, is that of trying to bring down those who are on the higher economic and social
ladder. This can be seen majorly in the Badyaranke tribe. During the time the study was being conducted in the Badyaranke tribe that showed that those
who have a higher socioeconomic status in the tribe can often be accused of summoning the spirit of Ufann (a spirit who exchanges a soul for healthy
crops) and preforming witchcraft on their crops to gain wealth in the community (Simmons, 1980:455). In both of these societies it is evident that the
community uses status as a means to inflict allegations of witchcraft.
Scapegoat
It is not rare that a community often needs a way to explain unexplainable occurrences. Humans in western society always look for a science based
logical reason to legitimize a situation. While this is a common human trait, the science aspect can be lost on those nations that are geared more towards
religious of spiritual beliefs. Both the Badyaranke tribe and people of Malta during the seventeenth century used

Essay on Objectification of Women in The House of Mirth
Objectification of Women in The House of Mirth
Edith Wharton's The House of Mirth is an affront to the false social values of fashionable New York society. The heroine is Lily Bart, a woman who
is destroyed by the very society that produces her. Lily is well–born but poor. The story traces the decline ofLily as she moves through a series of
living residences, from houses to hotel lodgings. Lily lives in a New York society where appearances are all. Women have a decorative function in
such an environment, and even her name, Lily, suggests she is a flower of femininity, i.e. an object of decoration as well as of desirability to the male
element. We see this is very true once Lily'sbloom fades, as it were, a time when she ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The irony of the situation is that most women who are accepted by society and are able to maintain the role of being something worthy to look at
are able to do so only because of a husband who supplies them with the necessary funds to achieve it. In other words, in a male dominated society
wherein women largely need the financial support of men to be accepted, they have become commodities. Lily recognizes this predicament when she
ponders her marriage to Percy Gryce, a position where she would be to him "what his Americana hitherto had been: the one possession in which he
took sufficient pride to spend money on" (Wharton 65).
Yet, this very society that demand its women be superficial creatures that merit worth only by appearance is also one which immediately rejects a
woman who seems intent on marrying a man with wealth–the one course open to women who wish to be accepted in society. This may be where one
of Lily's character qualities prevents her from being able to join such a society. She is no good at hiding her desire to marry a man of wealth. In fact,
she even tells Selden, her true love, that she "is very expensive" and "must have a great deal of money" (Wharton 31). These kinds of admissions
make Lily appear to be the one thing this superficial society cannot bear–a scheming adventuress out to snag a rich

In this essay, I hope to show how Cultural Capital and Habitus is used as a form of currency that has agency regarding class status and privilege. How

The doctrine of Ultra vires was first mentioned in 1875 in the landmark judgement of Ashbury Railway Carriage and Iron Company (Limited) v

A Company called "The Ashbury Railway Carriage and Iron Company," was incorporated under the Companies Act, 1862. Itsobject was "maintenance,

Ultra vires is an act or transaction of a company, which may not be illegal, but is beyond the company's powers by reason of not being within the
scope of MOA. Any attempted departure will be invalid and cannot be validated even if assented by all the members of the company.
This rule acts as a preserver of the corporate capital in the hands of the corporation . There are three extremely germane and basic purposes behind the
protection of corporate capital by method for doctrine of ultra vires.
Firstly, the company's share–holders, agree to part with their money permanently on the faith that it shall be invested in the stated objects and in no

Jacob Of Convulsive Status Epilepticus: A Case Study
Fifteen month old Jacob is brought seizing into our small rural emergency department by ambulance. He has been having generalised tonic clonic
jerking movements and unresponsiveness for the past twenty–five minutes. He is accompanied by his very concerned mother. Jacob is immediately
designated a category one triage as he is unresponsive, his life is in immediate danger as is having an ongoing and prolonged seizure. A Glasgow
coma scale less than eight (his is three) means he is not able to protect his airway. The provisional diagnosis given to Jacob of generalised convulsive
status epilepticus (SE) is a serious and often life threatening emergency as it can compromise the airway leading to hypoxia causing neurons to die
leading to potential permanent brain damage.
Jacob had been ill with coryzal symptoms and fever for forty eight hours. He's had no other symptoms except being slightly lethargic. He has been
eating and drinking normally. His last oral intake was juice three hours ago. He was previously fit and well with no significant past medical history,

Essay on Language Development in Childhood Development
Everyday we are developing no matter our age, but it is how we develop children that will tell a tremendous amount an individual. How a child
developments is fundamentally important at a young age as it affects all aspect of their lives once the child matures. Throughout the class, we looked
at many theorists during the course of the semester as well as looked at many articles pertaining to the concepts of the development of children. The
theorists and articles opened up our minds to a world that we have never seen before and concepts about child development we have never been taught
but have seen in the practical work we do every week. What makes humans unique is the ability that we have to interpret the language being used, as

Numerous studies have been done in this area as there are many children living in poverty in North America and all across the world. There are
roughly over one billion children living in poverty around the world (United Nations Children's Fund, 2010). The Food and Agriculture
Organization of the United describes poverty as "Lack of knowledge and good skills in herding was widely given as a main cause of poverty."
Living in poverty can seriously affect a child's life as the child would not be able to go to school or would do poorly because there was nothing to eat
at home so they would not be able concentrate. The child when old enough would have to work all day to make money for the family and many other
harsh realities throughout their lifetime. Throughout the course of this paper I will be explain how poverty effects language development of a child
because of the reasons of parental education and having a low socioeconomic status. In this paper, I do talk a lot about school statistics a number of
times but that is because I believe if one does not have their language skills fully developed the results will show in their work ethic and grades in
school. It is important to understand that poverty does not have a direct consequence to language development but it is things associated with poverty
such as parental education, health care, child care, low socioeconomic status and many other variables that play an influence in

Comparison Of Kuhn And Popper 's Understanding Of Science
In this section we will compare and contrast Kuhn's understanding of science with Popper's understanding of science. These two methods are narrower
when it comes to levels of scrutiny. They are also more open and willing to embrace change because they seek to change the status quo which is
traditional science. Both scientists agree that the traditional method of science is too broad and ignores many different variables that could change
the outcome of the results. They also concur on the idea that a subjective approach to science and reason is more suitable to reach a correct answer
rather than shooting wildly in all directions and accepting the bullet that is closest to our target. Kuhn and Popper looked at traditional science as a
method based on assumptions and estimates rather than exact truths or data. They do differ however in some ways. Kuhn does not believe that
falsifying theories is necessary to ascertain the truth like Popper does. He simply believes that society is rapidly changing and therefore the methods
of science must change also. Popper does not necessarily concern himself with sociological opinions or status quos. He focuses more on the procedures
of traditional methods and works to disprove theories. Karl Popper was an Austrian–British philosopher as well as a professor of science. He grew up
in a wealthy family and surrounded himself with education and knowledge. He attended various lectures and soon found himself accepting the socialist
ideas of Karl

The Kite Runner Marxist Lense Paper
In the book The Kite Runner, original social status is proven to create barriers in life regarding the aspects of friendship, mindset, and adaptation to
change as we observe Baba's and Amir's life journeys in order to discover how it affects these aspects. Amir's friendship with his hazara servant's son
Hassan takes a sudden toll as he ultimately comes to believe that traditional and historical beliefs outweighed true friendship as he was a young child.
The mindset of Baba does not adjust when he and Amir are forced to move to America, as he still believes he possesses the same amount of power as
he did in Afghanistan. While living in America, Baba never fully adapts to the American culture and way of life as he continues to live and... Show

One day Asseff rapes Hassan as an act of power, and Amir witnesses the actions but acts in a cowardly matter and simply avoids the matter by
ignoring it. Amir then proceeds to cut off the relationships between himself and Hassan, "I actually aspired to cowardice, but the real reason I was
running, was that Asseff was right. Nothing was free in this world. Maybe Hassan was the price I had to pay, the lamb I had to slay to win Baba.
Was it a fair price? The answer floated to my conscious mind before I could thwart it: He was just a Hazara. Wasn't he?" Amir did it because the
traditional and historical beliefs were more important than friendship. This action displays how being born in a different social class can outweigh all
feelings of love and friendship with one of a different social group.
As the war in Afghanistan begins, Baba and Amir flee to America where they went from being at the top of the social pyramid, to starting again at
the very bottom. Baba's mindset however, remains the same throughout his whole life. Back in Afghanistan, Baba was very proud of his possessions
and the ability to afford so many luxuries, as he often would show off his fancy mustang which he bought prior to seeing it in a movie, "Then, Baba
and I drove off in his black Ford Mustang – a car that drew envious looks everywhere because it was the same car Steve McQueen had driven in

Indian Tradition Of Indi An Important Part Of Indian...
Gold has been an important part of India culture for much of it's history. It has had major influences Indian Hindu weddings. Gold has been apart of
Indian weddings for much of India's history. During this time, the meaning of gold and what it symbolizes in the weddings as changed greatly
throughout India's long history. Today, gold is used to show status both in the community and the household. It also symbolizes purity in thewedding,
which reinforces the social status of the bride. Gold wishes luck upon the couple so they will have a good marriage, which is essential to social status in
India. Since India has had such a long history with gold, many still believe that gold in weddings is used for "traditional" purposes. It is still a
wide–held belief that gold is used in the wedding ceremony as a form of a dowry that the bride's family is giving to the groom's family. Culture is
constantly changing and the use of gold in India weddings an example of the constant flux of culture. While gold is used in the ceremony for many
reasons, it representing a dowry is just not one of them. While dowries are still around in India today, the way the are handled and what is used to pay
them has changed from the "traditional" dowries, which were primarily completely made out of gold. Rather gold is used in the wedding ceremony to
show to the status, not only of each individual but as their new status as a married couple, thus presenting them and their newly combined statuses to
society.

The Role Of Single Motherhood And Residential Mobility As...
While the nation tirelessly debates the state of immigration in this country, far less attention has been devoted to migrations within the country and the
implications it has on affordable housing policy. Residential mobility is one of the primary factors in measuring housing stability, and it often has
crucial ramification on housing policy, research, and service orientations that address a multitude of issues ranging from neighborhood poverty to racial
discrimination. While residential mobility is widespread across the economic spectrum, low–income families have consistently been shown to move
more frequently (Coulton, Theodos, Turner 56). Frequent or involuntary residential mobility can have an array of consequences for families, including
disruption of employment, interference with the educational attainment of children, and interruptions within social networks (Crowley et al. 56). With
approximately 26 percent of children living with a single parent today, and an estimated 31 percent of single parent households living under the poverty
line (census), the research in this paper will examine the relationship between single motherhood and residential mobility as a measure of housing
stability. (Horowitz, Parker, Rohal 7)
Residential mobility can be defined as the frequent change of residence, either within the same city or town, or between cities, states and communities
(Coulton et al. 261). Melissa A. Kull, Rebekah Levine Coley, and Alicia Doyle draw a picture of

psychologists including , Jenness (1932), Sherif (1935) both experimented in psychology, investigating conformity and group pressure. However,
perhaps the most famous conformity experiment was done by Solomon Asch (1951) and his line judgment experiment. (McLeod 2007) Solomon Asch

Status Epilepticus Case Studies
Clinical Feature
Status epilepticus (SE) is a life–threatening ailment in which the brain is in a state of persistent seizure. Definitions differ, but conventionally it is
well–defined as one constant unremitting seizure lasting longer than 5 minutes, or recurring seizures without recuperating consciousness between
seizures for greater than 5 minutes. When recurring seizures happen at a frequency which does not let consciousness to be recouped in the interval
between seizures, it is called status epilepticus. Severe and perpetual brain impairment might arise from status epilepticus continuing for more than an
hour. The lengthier the duration of status epilepticus, the more challenging it is to control and higher is the rate of morbidity and mortality. It is
constantly considered a medical emergency. Etiologically, SE can be shared into 3 groups. SE can represent an exacerbation of a pre–existing seizure
complaint, the early manifestation of a seizure disorder, or an insult other than a seizure disorder. In patients with known... Show more content on

Generalized status is lethal when convoyed by hyperpyrexia, acidosis (from prolonged muscle activity), respiratory or cardiovascular compromise.
Irreversible neuronal injury might arise from persistent seizures, even when patient is paralyzed from neuromuscular blockade.
Causes
Principal reasons of epilepticus status are antiepileptic drug removal or noncompliance, metabolic disturbances, alcohol or drug related, CNS infections,
CNS tumors, refractory epilepsy, cerebrovascular disease and head ordeal.
Treatment
It is significant to treat an individual with status epilepticus as soon as possible. One study indicated that 80 percent of folks in status epilepticus who
received medicine within 30 minutes of seizure onset ultimately stopped having seizures, while only 40 percent recovered if two hours had passed
before they received medicine. The following medicines may be

Stratification : Social, Class, And Caste
Stratification: Social, Economic, Class, and Caste Social stratification is made up of hierarchical relationships among different groups of people. It is
as though people are arranged in strata, or layers. Groups may be unequal with material resources, power, human welfare, education, and symbolic
attributes. This social stratification began with the emergence of agriculture, but is now universally present. Stratification can be broken up into
categories such as class, caste, age, and indigeneity. There is a difference in membership within these categories that can be broken down into ascribed
and achieved positions. Society places people into different categories, defining their status. Achieved positions are based on the qualities that the
person has gained through action. Included in an achieved position is class. "Social class refers to a person's or group's position in society and is defined
primarily in economic terms," (273). This is a secondary social group, which means that there are too many members for them to all have a relationship
with one another. Class can be important to determining a person's status, but sometimes they have nothing to do with each other. The textbook tells us
that the class system allows for upward mobility in capitalist societies, which some anthropologists call meritocratic individualism. On the other hand,
in the structure of the class system in an economic stratification, economic class can shape a person's lifestyle and

Elizabeth 's Soft Nature Of The Perfect Woman
Elizabeth's soft nature conveys the epitome of the perfect woman during the early to mid–nineteenth century. The readers are introduced to Elizabeth
primarily through her looks. In Frankenstein, others are compared to Elizabeth's beauty as her fairness attracts attention from the "hardy little vagrants"
surrounding her (Shelley 32). The other children are described as vagrants, homeless wanderers, while Elizabeth embodies an angelic nature. The
juxtaposition of her light, fair appearance among the dark, poor other children attracted the attention of Caroline Frankenstein, leading to her safety
from poverty and entrance into a higher social status. Elizabeth, the perfect woman, lacked the hardy and tough nature of the other children, and
belonged in a higher social class. As Elizabeth expands her education she partakes in the traditional education of a woman during the Romanticist era
as she "busied herself with following the aerial creations of the poets; and in the majestic and wondrous scenes" (Shelley 35). While Victor discovers
natural laws and science, Elizabeth educates herself in her beautiful surroundings of nature. Her knowledge is grounded in the whimsical flights of
poets during Shelley's contemporary and immensely more carefree and naГЇve than that of her male counterpart. Furthermore she symbolizes the most
naГЇve force – love – to balance Victor's determination and curiosity as she "was the living spirit of love to soften and attract" (Shelley 37).

Implementing The Reggio Emilia Approach For Low Income Pre...
The academic achievement gap between students from families with low socioeconomic status and students from families with high socioeconomic
status is of major concern in the world of education today. It is the job of current and future educators to come up with solutions to this issue. The
United States is a country of great wealth disparity and inequality, the best teachers can do to help their low socioeconomic status students find success
is through manipulating the curriculum and increasing academic success to help their students try to escape generational poverty. This paper will
discuss the idea of implementing The Reggio Emilia Approach for low–income pre–kindergarten students to increase literacy and language acquisition,
attempting to close the academic achievement socioeconomic status gap. The Reggio Emilia Approach was founded by Loris Malaguzzi in Reggio
Emilia, Italy in the 1960s. An Educational Psychologist, Malaguzzi created an approach to education that put the child at the center of it all (Reggio
Emilia Approach). The Reggio Emilia Approach considers the child to have strong individual talents and potentials. The students are the most active,
involved, and important members of the classroom. Students in Reggio Emilia schools learn about themselves in relation to other people and their
environment. The child is seen not as an empty vessel that needs to be filled with facts and data, but an autonomous individual capable of great

Analysis Of Kill A Mockingbird By Harper Lee

  • 1. Analysis Of Kill A Mockingbird By Harper Lee Do you have the courage to stand up for good when evil lingers all around? To Kill a Mockingbird is set in the town of Maycomb, Alabama, during the great depression, while facing social status discrimination, racial discrimination, prejudices, and stereotyping. However, there remained courage by some to see good in all. While Atticus Finch was of a higher social status as an attorney in Maycomb, he always displayed the courage to stand up for what was right, or for good, even when evil lingered in the shadows. While this story was from great depression, these same issues are still in the world today. Prejudices and stereotyping are very common especially when one looks, or dresses, or talks differently than others. Courage comes into play when one is willing to stand up for those being criticized or for those perceived as being a lower social status. Having courage can show more about a person and who one is regardless of social status even if it is a lower social status. Courage can be viewed or displayed in many ways. Atticus Finch displayed courage when he agreed to take Tom Robinson's case even though he knew the townspeople of Maycomb would take the side of a low class white man over that of a decent black man. In his discussion with his son Jem, Atticus said "There's something in our world that makes men lose their heads – they couldn't be fair if they tried. In our courts, when it's a white man's word against a black man's, the white man always wins. They're ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Essay on Epilepsy Epilepsy Epilepsy is not what you think. It is a complicated disease, a disease that doesn't just affect one type of person or age. Over fifty million men, women, and children cope with this disease daily. Epilepsy is a mysterious disease to those who are unfamiliar and uneducated about the disease. Many people have preconceived notions about Epileptics. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Myth #2: Epileptics look a certain way. Most people think Epileptics look different or "weird." False, an Epileptic looks the same as a normal human being, except when they are having a seizure. In some cases Epileptics don't have seizures, so those people will always go unidentified. A majority of the people who have severe Epilepsy wear a medical bracelet to inform paramedics of their health. Besides a medical alert bracelet it is nearly impossible to tell the differences between an Epileptic and a Non–Epileptic. Myth #3: Only children have Epilepsy, or you have to be born with Epilepsy to have it. Once upon a time people began the belief that children are the only people who can have the disease. False, men, women, and children can have this disease. Epilepsy is not confined to a certain age or gender. People can acquire this disease by heredity, or by a severe head trauma. Adults are not excluded because they may experience tumors, strokes, cysts, or infections sometime in their lives, which would cause post–traumatic Epilepsy. Children on the other hand, were once believed to be the sole carriers of the disease, probably because children can grow out of it. Children who have Epilepsy have one specific treatment options available to them, which is not available for adults. • 3. Fashion by Anna Mowatt In the 19th century play, FASHION, Anna Mowatt develops the character plot as a contrast and comparison between being "natural" and "artificial in a world becoming preoccupied with fashion, and being fashionable. In the head notes, it was stated that Daniel Havens said FASHION is "the ugly image of the American Dream gone sour." (Watt and Richardson) Fashion has a complex definition. The word 'fashion' can mean anything from the type of clothes you wear, how you communicate with others, the place you live, how you present yourself, or who you associate yourself with. In FASHION, Mowatt took a comical yet sober look at the definitions of "fashion," applied it to real life in 1845, and through her characters, provides a mirror with which an... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In a present day version of FASHION, Zeke could easily be portrayed as a friend who often visits the Tiffany's. Alternatively, he could also be an employee of theirs as a handyman, or plumber, etc. This would provide a current day perspective of the poorer economic class of Zeke's character. Moral Character – Living in the country or the city?: There are certainly differences of opinion whether it is better to live in the City or in the Country. In FASHION, it was very evident that Mowatt's character, 'Trueman' was an advocate proclaiming that living in the country keeps the morals and values of America pure and untainted. Near the end of the play, Trueman tells Mr. Tiffany, "You must sell your house and all these gew gaws, and bundle your wife and daughter off to the country. There let them learn economy, true independence, and home virtues, instead of foreign follies." In the case of Mrs. Tiffany and Seraphina, this antidote was truly what they needed. This does not make it true for everyone. I am sure many feel this way about city life vs. country life today. However, there are pros and cons to both; neither life guarantees economy, independence virtue, honor, or a happier existence. Therefore, I do not believe there is a clear cut solution to whether one life is more coveted than the other. Some believe that living in the country is better because you are not exposed to the "fast" life that city dwelling has to offer. Many believe country life has less ... • 4. Humanity and Social Forces Humanity has been trying to formulate an answer to the question of why we do what we do for years and years. The field of psychology searches for the answer within us, that is to say, they examine the internal forces that make us do what we do. However, sociology searches for the answer in terms of external forces. Sociology sets out to prove that human behavior is controlled by forces of social interaction, while in turn the behaviors of humans control the forces of social interaction in a cycle that controls many aspects of life. The way in which people behave and conduct their lives can be based on a plethora of factors such as social stratification. Through social stratification people are grouped into social "layers" based on their property, power, and prestige (Henslin). Social locations also play an important role in human behavior.Social class divides people based on income, education, and occupation (Henslin). Social statuses allow division and labeling based upon different positions that someone occupies. For example, a man is the CEO of a corporation, therefore one of his statuses is CEO, which may cause others to treat him differently because of his status. Not only does his status influence the people's behavior around him, it also influences his own behavior as a result of how he is treated. However, while some social statuses are given, others you are born with. The term "ascribed status" is used to describe a status with which one is born, such as gender ... The Pros And Cons Of Nonconvulsive Status Epilepticus Many studies have suggested that managing nonconvulsive status epilepticus (NCSE) presents many challenges, which would benefit from additional early measures to predict patient outcomes. Non–convulsive status epilepticus (NCSE) is status epilepticus without obvious tonic–clonic activity. NCSE is now known to be a heterogeneous disease with a variety of reasons, several subtypes (Shenker and Foundation 2003). • 6. The New Symbolic Consumers For Fashion Brands 5. Discussion The study has followed several sets of key previous research findings and contributed to the new symbolic consumers' model as explained in the following seven arguments. First, Baudrillard' (1993, 1994, 1998) theory, symbolic consumption, as a focal notion of the study, is found to be a good foundation to understand consumers' purchasing decisions for fashion brands. The findings show that consumers choose brands which have relevance or desired 'symbolic value' for them. Not only Baudrillard, the findings are also in line with the studies of Dittmar (1992, 1994, 2004, 2008), Elliott & Wattanasuwan (1998a) and Wattanasuwan (2003, 2005) regarding how consumers use fashion products; symbolic consumption is used to represent actual self–identity, and also to create ideal self–identity. Furthermore, Baudrillard's sign system can be applied to explicate the process of the signification of fashion brands. The sign system leads to a new model of symbolic consumers, which is used to illustrate the interrelationship between all consumer influences. Baudrillard proposed that consumers from different backgrounds interpret fashion symbolism differently. The findings revealed that fashion brands' marketing elements are translated based on respondents' experience. The findings also support Grubb and Grathwohl's (1967) model stating that the signification of fashion goods is generated by the symbolic exchange transactions of groups. Hence, internal and external influences ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The School Drop Out Phenomena In Uruguay, between one out of three and one out of four children that enroll in secondary school do not graduate. For a country that used to exhibit high education levels and more than tripled its education expenditure per student in the last ten years, being just above Latin American standards appears as anything but a success. Several studies dug in the cause and nature of such an evolution. One particular finding called for the attention of researchers: the probability of an adolescent leaving their studies exhibit two peaks, one at 15 years old and the other at 18. There seems to be a period of relative calm between ages 15 and 18 in terms of school dropping. (1) Quite an odd shape for that process. Why is it that student feelings about education along the adolescence present this U shape? Are subjects being taught in those particular years less interesting than others? Are them more difficult? Why such an important and long term decision goes back and forth during adolescence? The school drop–out phenomena has been widely researched but it still remains in the shades. Pouring money into the education system does not seem enough to solve the issue. Despite efforts of teachers some children still underestimate the benefits of studying. Or at least they do not feel the payoff big enough for the effort they do. A humongous amount of hard data proves that for teens it is not a wise decision to abandon their studies. Nevertheless, simply telling them that, does not change ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. The Ethical Issue of Participants Giving Informed Consent... Ethical Issues: One major ethical issue before a study can be conducted is that participants must give informed consent before they participate. The Nuremburg Code from 1947 says that individuals must give voluntary consent if the study is associated with human subjects (Saks & Allsop, 2007). Therefore, according to the code, the elderly patients have the right to refuse participation and I cannot and do not have the right to influence or ask these patients to participate. Elderly patients must give informed consent before the interviews are conducted and agree to provide information to the study. Ethical approval from the institutional review board on campus will be acquired before the start of the study. There is an agency in Canada that consists of the CIHR, SSHRC, and the NSERC, with the purpose of governing research ethics. The autonomy of participants in the study must be respected and that they should be able to decide whether or not to take part in the research without being interference. All aspects of the study must be explained to the elderly patients, such as the purpose, risks/harm, and benefits. Although there may not be physical harm from this study, there can be psychological harm due to elderly patients bringing up the social issues they face and how it connects with the issue. Participants also have the right to withdraw from the study or withdraw data that has been collected on them at any time (CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC, 2010). Another ethical issue is ... • 9. The First Mode Of Assessment In schools, there are two major modes of assessment that are given to students. The first mode is formative assessment which involves an on–going day–to–day process that involves various techniques such as observing student performance, oral questioning, and self and peer assessment. The second mode of assessment is summative assessment which is typically given at the end of a term or school year. Its purpose is to give information about what the students have accomplished within a certain period of time (Education Bureau, 2013). With summative assessment, there are two major methods of administrating assessments. The first method, the pencil–and–paper test, has been used for many years and is the most commonly used. This method involves test takers reading questions that are on paper and responding in writing. The second method, the computer–based test, is a newer method that has increased in use more recently with the advent of better computer technology. Computer–based testing involves any type of assessment that is completed using a computer (Ahluwalia, 2008). There are a number of pros for using computer–based testing over pencil–and–paper testing. Computer testing is more affordable because it does not involve the costs of paper and printing associated with pencil–and–paper tests (Hovland, 2005). In comparison to pencil–and–paper tests, scoring is easier and students can also receive instant feedback with computer testing (Parshall, 2002). Pencil–and–paper tests also ... The author of the book said he has the same views as the previously mentioned Malthus, that there is too many people in the world but not enough resources. Hardin goes father and even argues the rich people are well endowed in their boat while the poor want and need what the rich have. In this essay Hardin was being harsh on views and opinions he had on the difference between the upper and lower class. This article has the potential to be use full for my paper, but it will consists of a few direct quotes from the ignorance Hardin talks about with the rich being selfish. Austin, Michael. • 11. The Effects Of Socioeconomics On Children 's Children Imagine a boy that has been teased mercilessly by his peers throughout his schooling because of his clothes and his free and reduced lunch status. He is constantly under pressure from peers to have the newest and niftiest gadgets; nevertheless, his mother cannot afford to provide food and permanent housing, much less, these extra luxuries. Therefore, he has to comprise with what his mother can afford. She tries to provide for her children and wants to offer them the world. Nonetheless, due to her economic situation, she cannot provide her for children adequately; they are forced to ask for aid from the government, close family, and friends. This situation brings light to the turmoil that socioeconomics brings upon children and that they need to endure to survive in this society. When it comes to socioeconomics, children are the utmost affected. Socioeconomics has long term effects, prevalently distresses children in school and in development. Through my friend's experience that he has shared with me, it has allowed me to notice the harrowing effects that socioeconomics has on children. First, one may ask exactly what is socioeconomic status and other terms that surround this issue? Socioeconomic status can be defined as "an overall ranking of a person's position in society based on income, education, and occupation" (Benokraitis, 2014, p. 142). Socioeconomic status can further be simplified in saying it is a classification system that is forced upon all people within a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. The Cherry Orchard By Anton Chekov "The measure of who we are is what we do with what we have." As demonstrated by this quotation from Vince Lombardi, a reflection of our worth derives from the effort we put forward. Stories of successful citizens rising from the unknown to fame, or poverty to wealth shows the "common man" that if they desire a similar outcome, there exists a possibility of attaining a higher social status. Occasionally, as depicted in the play The Cherry Orchard by Anton Chekov, instances where honest means to attain fortune occasionally arise. By utilizing dialogue and direction, action, and images, he makes clear the dishonest motives of the character Lopakhin, especially within the third act. In order to obtain a new status within society, Lopakhin creates chaos in order to ensure his future differs from his past, while controlling the destiny of those who indirectly oppressed him through the development of a motive and acting on his personal desires with no regard for the people around him.Without an initial conversation regarding development, there exists no possibility for change. David Ball, the author of Backwards and Forwards: A Technical Manual for Reading Plays mentions, "Talking is drama's most common activity." (Ball 27) then proceeds to question the statement to continue his point by asking, "What is it about talking that connects it to recognizable human behavior?" resulting in his answer of "A human being talks in order to get what he or she wants." (27). Within a play, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. Discussion of Love in Raymond Carver's What We Talk About... In the article "What We Talk About When We Talk About Love", which was written by Raymond Carver in 1981, the author is mainly talking about the story from Mel McGinnis, who is at home with his wife Terri and their friends, Nick and Laura, are drinking gin and tonics and talking about love. The first discussion is about Terri's ex husband, Ed. Ed is the guy she was with before Mel McGinnis. It is a sad story. She says, that night Ed beat her, he told her, "Ilove you, I love you, you bitch" while he pulled her around the room. Terri considers that what Ed felt for her was love. It has been confirmed by scientists for many years, that when observed a baby boy and a baby girl's behavior who are born a few months, when the boy feels upset, he likes to throw things, such as feeder, and some paper towels. In addition, when a group of children in kindergarten stay together and decide what to play, boys are more likely to choose a toy car or toy guns to play, while girls tend to chat with each other or be social with other girls. There is one more example, when a boy and his mother are at the mall to buy things like electronic products. A fancy toy comes to his eyes, and it's the one he really desires to have, but his mother refuses to buy this toy. The boy suddenly sits down on the ground, blubber, being angry, pulls his mother's clothes and hold until the mother's consent to buy one. Mental illness may also lead him to misbehave. Mel and Terri are arguing the reason why Ed kills himself at the beginning of the story. He mentions that "He took this twenty–two pistol he'd bought to threaten Terri and me with. Oh, I'm serious, the man was always threatening."(Carver). On the other hand society is composed of members who typically share a common culture or, at least, a recognised set of values, symbolism and other interactions such as social structure that defines the society's members. Modern day hunter gatherers have adapted to geographical regions which have shaped their way of everyday life, social structure and organisation. Horticulturalists have adapted to this ecological restraint buy deforesting, cultivating the land, burning it, leaving it to fallow then move onto a new piece of land this is known as swidden cultivation. • 15. Child Poverty : Where Will They End Up? Child in Poverty, Where Will They End Up? A child in poverty can have negative and positive effects on their opportunity for social mobility, as oppose to a child that is born in a higher class. It is believed that if you are born into a poor family you will stay poor. It's very hard to move up from your social status if you have very little to begin with. The effects that poverty has on a child's opportunity are things like not being able to get a higher education, having and not having the motivation to strive for better opportunities because of situation their family is in, and will not have as many opportunities as a child born into a family of a higher social status. Children who live in poverty will not be living in the nicer neighborhoods. In result, they will not be attending the best schools. Many times the child does not seem ready for school. They lack the desire, or ability to comprehend the material. "Children from low–income families often do not receive the stimulation and do not learn the social skills required to prepare them for school."(Brooks–Gunn, Duncan, Page 61) The best schools are most likely in the neighborhoods where there are less crimes and more money. Those kids have more opportunities available to them like computers, better quality books, and more qualified teachers. If you go to a school that does not have those resources, what are the chances of that child having a better social status than that of a kid who did? "More than 30 million ... I think this book shows how scientists stay happy in their field, by not searching for answers, but continually asking questions. I think this play is very different to me and my fellow colleague's because sexism is rare to see day to day in our environment. Nor does our generation work in such a class based society, which diversifies jobs based their gender. Our society encourages jobs to be the goal and to have a fulfilling career, which can provide for the rest of someone's life. In many situations this can be the case, however it is not universal. Additionally, many factors come into play when analyzing how intergenerational mobility does or does not occur. Some of these factors include existing social class, field of study, undergraduate vs. advanced degrees, race or gender, selection of institution, and parental resources. In the case of earnings mobility, a similar U–shaped pattern emerges. In cases of earnings distribution, those at the extreme ends of educational distribution show the strongest association (i.e. individuals with less than a college degree and advanced degree holders) indicating, "a college degree appears to still be a great equalizer among BA holders but not among advanced–degree holders" (Torche, 2011). So far, the analysis of intergenerational mobility as it relates to class, occupational status, and earnings has been restricted to labor market forces. When family income mobility is studied, other factors are taken into account such as non–occupational resources and family–level processes. Specific examples that were taken into account included parental transfers of wealth and intergenerational reproduction as it relates to occupational mobility. While the results of this area of study closely resemble previously discussed results, one interesting point emerges. Stress and Perfectionism in Academic Achievement Between Blue Ribbon Schools vs. Non–blue Ribbon Schools Erin Altenberger Northern Kentucky University Abstract Stress and Perfectionism in Academic Achievement Between Blue Ribbon Schools vs. Non–blue Ribbon Schools Damian, Stoeber, Negru, and Baban (2014), describes perfectionism as endeavoring for flawlessness and setting extremely high standards for oneself. There is not just one type of perfectionism; there are in fact three different categories of perfectionism. The three categories included self–oriented, other–oriented, and socially prescribed perfectionism. Self–oriented perfectionism refers to an individual that sets and seeks high standards of performance for themselves (Chang, 2006). Chang (2006) describes other–oriented perfectionism as an individual that assumes that others should be perfect in their actions. Socially prescribed perfectionism refers to an individual that believes that those around them anticipate perfectionism from him or her (Chang, 2006). With what we know about perfectionism and the potential distress it may cause, one can consider that stress could be a component with perfectionism. Pope (2005) portrays stress as the perceived shortcomings between demands and the accessibility of resources to meet those demands. Stress is a feeling that affects people of all ages. • 20. The Lesson By Toni Cade Bambara Throughout the years knowledge and culture has been passed down within generations. Elders within the community often teach life lessons to the young adults growing up in the neighborhood. This idea still holds true today, especially in low–income communities. People from different socioeconomic backgrounds live different lifestyles they also have different opportunities made available to them. Because of this idea, people with a higher social standing have an advantage over those in lower class standings. Social classes divide the people of our nation and have existed for as long as we can remember. The American Dream created the American nation that we know today. The dream itself is different for each individual. Money plays a major part in the American Dream because to be successful in America means to bear great wealth. We live in a nation, in which money controls our very existence. "The Lesson" by Toni Cade Bambara creates an argument about society's unfairness that involves financial opportunities by revealing the differences in living environments between upper class and lower class. "The Lesson" is a very well written fragment of the past. This is a story from New York's inner city of Harlem where children did not have substantial education much less the money to obtain it. Global Drug Policy The global policy on drugs has one main concern, as maintained in the first clause of the 1961 UN Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs: promoting the health and welfare of mankind (United Nations, 1961). The convention and global drug policy actors have asserted through the years that drugs pose a threat to this concern, and so an integrated effort to reduce supply, demand and trafficking of said narcotics is the desired course of action (High Level segment Commission on Narcotic Drugs, 2009). It seems that this course of action became an end of itself instead of a mean to an end of health and welfare, as mounting evidence shows that the actions taken to achieve this have not only been ineffective in reducing supply, demand and trafficking; they have also created severe violations of human rights, alongside criminalization, a hazard to public health, and drug cartels which pose a very real threat to peace and security. Member states have not been oblivious to the fact that the measures taken have been counterproductive, and an increasing number of states are dissatisfied with the results of this policy (Doward, 2013). Some have addressed this by decriminalizing possession and use of drugs and introducing harm reduction programs, considering the issue of demand not a criminal issue but a public health one. The irony of the situation is that most women who are accepted by society and are able to maintain the role of being something worthy to look at are able to do so only because of a husband who supplies them with the necessary funds to achieve it. In other words, in a male dominated society wherein women largely need the financial support of men to be accepted, they have become commodities. Lily recognizes this predicament when she ponders her marriage to Percy Gryce, a position where she would be to him "what his Americana hitherto had been: the one possession in which he took sufficient pride to spend money on" (Wharton 65). Yet, this very society that demand its women be superficial creatures that merit worth only by appearance is also one which immediately rejects a woman who seems intent on marrying a man with wealth–the one course open to women who wish to be accepted in society. This may be where one of Lily's character qualities prevents her from being able to join such a society. She is no good at hiding her desire to marry a man of wealth. In fact, she even tells Selden, her true love, that she "is very expensive" and "must have a great deal of money" (Wharton 31). These two methods are narrower when it comes to levels of scrutiny. They are also more open and willing to embrace change because they seek to change the status quo which is traditional science. Both scientists agree that the traditional method of science is too broad and ignores many different variables that could change the outcome of the results. They also concur on the idea that a subjective approach to science and reason is more suitable to reach a correct answer rather than shooting wildly in all directions and accepting the bullet that is closest to our target. Kuhn and Popper looked at traditional science as a method based on assumptions and estimates rather than exact truths or data. They do differ however in some ways. Kuhn does not believe that falsifying theories is necessary to ascertain the truth like Popper does. He simply believes that society is rapidly changing and therefore the methods of science must change also. Popper does not necessarily concern himself with sociological opinions or status quos. He focuses more on the procedures of traditional methods and works to disprove theories. Karl Popper was an Austrian–British philosopher as well as a professor of science. While residential mobility is widespread across the economic spectrum, low–income families have consistently been shown to move more frequently (Coulton, Theodos, Turner 56). Frequent or involuntary residential mobility can have an array of consequences for families, including disruption of employment, interference with the educational attainment of children, and interruptions within social networks (Crowley et al. 56). However, perhaps the most famous conformity experiment was done by Solomon Asch (1951) and his line judgment experiment. (McLeod 2007) Solomon Asch was a psychologist that conduced numerous expirments designed to illustrate the increasing conformity within social groups. The experiments also invesigated the effect the number of people present within the group had one the conformity rate. Asch hypothesized, " that the majority of the people would not conform to something obviosly wrong; however, when surrounded by (other) individuals all voicing an incorrect answer, 75% of them(the participant) will conform to the groups answer" (Watzlawick 1976) In the experiment solomon had two boards; one showing three lines of different lengths ( boardA) and another with one line( board B). The group of people were then asked which line on board A looked similar to the one on board B. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Status Epilepticus Evaluating a drug study (Valproate versus diazepam for generalized convulsive status epilepticus). Ethical: This study was ethical approved by the Ethics Committee of Xuanwu Hospital at the Capital Medical University in Beijing, China. The authors disclosed no conflict of interest. The funding source was funded by Capital Medical University's foundation. Inform consent was obtained from the legal representatives of the patients that were admitted to the intensive care unit. The only patients that were allowed to enroll were individuals who failed first–line (intravenous injection of diazepam) anticonvulsants. In the United States, lorazepam is considered the first–line drug for status epilepticus, but in China lorazepam is not available. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Efficacy is based on the drug being equally effective as other medications in treating SE. Keeping the patient safe and monitoring adverse side effects are essential when administering anticonvulsant drug therapy. Experimental methods: This study design was an open–label randomized controlled trial. A total of 66 patients enrolled in this study with a mean age of 41 years old that were admitted in the intensive care unit from 2007 to 2010. The mean age was between 40.8 to 41.4 between both groups. Of the 66 participants there were 36 men and 30 women that participated in this study. The seizure etiology includedepilepsy related, virus encephalitis, cerebrovascular disease, and other. The duration of seizures varied from under four hours to over 24 hours. The inclusion criteria included patients (15 years of age or older) with SE lasting five minutes of continuous seizures or two or more discrete seizures with incomplete recovery of consciousness. The participants that were allowed to enroll were individuals that failed first–line therapy of intravenous injection of diazepam (0.2 mg/kg) that was given twice with ten minute ... • 36. Status Epilepticus Case Studies Clinical Feature Status epilepticus (SE) is a life–threatening ailment in which the brain is in a state of persistent seizure. Definitions differ, but conventionally it is well–defined as one constant unremitting seizure lasting longer than 5 minutes, or recurring seizures without recuperating consciousness between seizures for greater than 5 minutes. When recurring seizures happen at a frequency which does not let consciousness to be recouped in the interval between seizures, it is called status epilepticus. Severe and perpetual brain impairment might arise from status epilepticus continuing for more than an hour. The lengthier the duration of status epilepticus, the more challenging it is to control and higher is the rate of morbidity and mortality. It is constantly considered a medical emergency. Etiologically, SE can be shared into 3 groups. SE can represent an exacerbation of a pre–existing seizure complaint, the early manifestation of a seizure disorder, or an insult other than a seizure disorder. In patients with known... Irreversible neuronal injury might arise from persistent seizures, even when patient is paralyzed from neuromuscular blockade. Causes Principal reasons of epilepticus status are antiepileptic drug removal or noncompliance, metabolic disturbances, alcohol or drug related, CNS infections, CNS tumors, refractory epilepsy, cerebrovascular disease and head ordeal. Treatment It is significant to treat an individual with status epilepticus as soon as possible. One study indicated that 80 percent of folks in status epilepticus who received medicine within 30 minutes of seizure onset ultimately stopped having seizures, while only 40 percent recovered if two hours had passed before they received medicine. The following medicines may be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Stratification : Social, Class, And Caste Stratification: Social, Economic, Class, and Caste Social stratification is made up of hierarchical relationships among different groups of people. It is as though people are arranged in strata, or layers. Groups may be unequal with material resources, power, human welfare, education, and symbolic attributes. This social stratification began with the emergence of agriculture, but is now universally present. Stratification can be broken up into categories such as class, caste, age, and indigeneity. There is a difference in membership within these categories that can be broken down into ascribed and achieved positions. Society places people into different categories, defining their status. Achieved positions are based on the qualities that the person has gained through action. Included in an achieved position is class. "Social class refers to a person's or group's position in society and is defined primarily in economic terms," (273). This is a secondary social group, which means that there are too many members for them to all have a relationship with one another. Class can be important to determining a person's status, but sometimes they have nothing to do with each other. The textbook tells us that the class system allows for upward mobility in capitalist societies, which some anthropologists call meritocratic individualism. On the other hand, in the structure of the class system in an economic stratification, economic class can shape a person's lifestyle and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Elizabeth 's Soft Nature Of The Perfect Woman Elizabeth's soft nature conveys the epitome of the perfect woman during the early to mid–nineteenth century. The readers are introduced to Elizabeth primarily through her looks. In Frankenstein, others are compared to Elizabeth's beauty as her fairness attracts attention from the "hardy little vagrants" surrounding her (Shelley 32). The other children are described as vagrants, homeless wanderers, while Elizabeth embodies an angelic nature. The juxtaposition of her light, fair appearance among the dark, poor other children attracted the attention of Caroline Frankenstein, leading to her safety from poverty and entrance into a higher social status. Elizabeth, the perfect woman, lacked the hardy and tough nature of the other children, and belonged in a higher social class. As Elizabeth expands her education she partakes in the traditional education of a woman during the Romanticist era as she "busied herself with following the aerial creations of the poets; and in the majestic and wondrous scenes" (Shelley 35). While Victor discovers natural laws and science, Elizabeth educates herself in her beautiful surroundings of nature. Her knowledge is grounded in the whimsical flights of poets during Shelley's contemporary and immensely more carefree and naГЇve than that of her male counterpart. Furthermore she symbolizes the most naГЇve force – love – to balance Victor's determination and curiosity as she "was the living spirit of love to soften and attract" (Shelley 37). ... • 39. Implementing The Reggio Emilia Approach For Low Income Pre... The academic achievement gap between students from families with low socioeconomic status and students from families with high socioeconomic status is of major concern in the world of education today. It is the job of current and future educators to come up with solutions to this issue. The United States is a country of great wealth disparity and inequality, the best teachers can do to help their low socioeconomic status students find success is through manipulating the curriculum and increasing academic success to help their students try to escape generational poverty. This paper will discuss the idea of implementing The Reggio Emilia Approach for low–income pre–kindergarten students to increase literacy and language acquisition, attempting to close the academic achievement socioeconomic status gap. The Reggio Emilia Approach was founded by Loris Malaguzzi in Reggio Emilia, Italy in the 1960s. An Educational Psychologist, Malaguzzi created an approach to education that put the child at the center of it all (Reggio Emilia Approach). The Reggio Emilia Approach considers the child to have strong individual talents and potentials. The students are the most active, involved, and important members of the classroom. Students in Reggio Emilia schools learn about themselves in relation to other people and their environment. The child is seen not as an empty vessel that needs to be filled with facts and data, but an autonomous individual capable of great potential (Kelemen, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
