Barcoding and nemerteans
1. DNA Barcoding and Nermerteans
By Amanda M. Icazatti-Burtell
Scientists are always searching for innovating procedures and techniques in order to better understand
our surrounding and its components. Recognizing an organism by its physical characteristics often get
confusing and it may not tell us anything. Implementing a barcoding system to identify organisms is an
innovative process used and developed for the tracking of species. It is called DNA Barcoding and
consists of sequencing the organism’s genetic material. It has become specialized and unique method
applied for individual’s identification because of the convenience assembling lines and numbers provide
to creation of a global and precise technique.
Procedures such as Polymerase Chain Reactions (PCR) have to be performed in order to obtain an
accurate identification. The purpose of this technique is to amplify a specific DNA fragment, which
enables a better understanding of the species being studied. To complement the findings of the PCR,
electrophoresis is used to obtain more information for a better approach in the species characterization.
Electrophoresis is a technique in which molecules are separated by the use of an electric field. It also
provides in more detail how DNA fragments and polypeptides behave within an electric field. In
addition, this experiment helps comprehend the extension of your amplified DNA fragment.
Is very curious to witness all the things science can encompass. Nermerteans are incredible organisms
that clearly represent how science is constantly pursuing to resolve unknowns, such as the ability of
these organisms to regenerate their nervous system towards a new organism. The dedication to study
and understand the behavior of these types of animals is admirable. Without any doubt, it makes the
world a more interesting place to be and explore.
