Chosen Genre Essay
Instead of sticking to one specific genre, I picked two genres that I am
really interested in, which is Mystery and Fantasy. Hopefully,
discussing the pros and cons between the two genres will help me
decided which genre is more achievable and constructive. Or I could
possibly do a hybrid of both of the genres; I convert it to a sub-genre,
to a Mystery Fantasy film opening; if I can’t decide which genre I
prefer best.
Fantasy genre is a fictional genre, so it contains unrealistic and
magical aspects. It could consist of talking animals, magical powers
such as witchcraft or wizardry. Having a magical atmosphere, plot or
characters is crucial for a fantasy genre and it needs to have a happy
ending or end in a peaceful and harmonious tone. Disney films are
well known for meeting to its Fantasy genre conventions. It is
common for young children or adolescents to be interested in Fantasy
films as some at a very young age do tend to believe in the story or
fairy tales – e.g. Tooth fairy, green-eyed monster. But it can be
suitable for adults to watch if you add sub genres such as Drama,
Mystery or Crime, this would add more interesting views because
Drama, Mystery or Crime can give a realistic or serious aspect, which
would appeal to everyone, rather than just children. Films such as,
the Hobbit, the entire Harry Potter film collection, Hunger Games
trilogy, the Twilight Saga which entails a similar mixture of genres,
which appeals to most people, but its main genre is Fantasy. Science
Fiction differs by a little as Sci-Fi focuses on the scientific conventions
such as space or science academics; Stars Wars is a classic example
of this particular genre. The positive outcome for creating a Fantasy
genre film opening is that it would look good and exciting visually,
only if it’s edited really well and if the props and costume is presented
well and is relevant to this genre. However, the issues that will occur
is picking the right scenery and actually creating the props and
costume on time, but if a good and exciting plot is created and is
acceptable to the genre, then there wouldn’t be a need to creating the
props/costume or having the need to pick the right scenery, because
it can be student with hidden magical powers, so it can easily be
filmed in school.
Mystery genre and Fantasy genre have one thing is common and it’s
that they both are fictional genres. But the mystery genre usually
consists a detective (or other professional) who solves a crime or series
of crimes. Originally, some movies are based on mystery writings,
which can be novels or short stories and some shows, (This genre may
also be called detective or crime novels) E.g. Sherlock Holmes, Jane
Eyre. The purpose of a mystery novel is to solve a puzzle and to create
a feeling of resolution with the audience. The expected elements of a
Mystery Genre are Hidden Evidence, which is the author, scriptwriter
or director may present seemingly unimportant details, but they really
offer clues to the crime unexpectedly. Another element is Suspense,
which are details about the plot are obscured to create tension and
audience/characters are left to linger in uncertainty and curiosity.
The positive outcome of filming a Mystery genre film opening is that it
can be filmed anywhere, although it can be a fictional genre, Mystery
genre can be filmed in realistic environments, to make the plot seem
realistic and somewhat relatable to the audience. Also, creating a good
plot for mystery is quite straightforward, because it doesn’t require
any extra specific props or costumes to create; all that is needed is a
suit, maybe a magnifying glass, notebook and pen. Furthermore, the
lighting needs to be dimly lit to create a mysterious and gloomy
atmosphere, which is perfectly fine because now that is it winter
season, the sunlight isn’t out for long, so I can film the opening at
outside at night or in dark places inside. The only thing to worry
about is that the actors need to be quite sophisticated and serious,
they must not laugh or smile a lot.
