1 Course Description and Rationale
Determining resistance and powering requirements is an
important part of the ship design process. This
course introduces students to marine flow problems and applies
principles of fluid mechanics to determine
resistance and propulsion characteristics of ships.
During the course of the semester we will address the following
topics:
• flow patterns and resistance components
• recapture of basic fluid dynamics
• laws of similitude in resistance and propulsion
• assessment of model test results
• ship hull – propeller interaction
• ship resistance and propulsion estimates
• propeller selection
• special topics (e.g., cavitation, planing hydrodynamics)

2 Course Goals and Outcomes
At the end of this course you should be able to
• discuss ship flow patterns and resistance components
• discuss and apply laws of similitude and dimensional analysis
as they relate to ship model testing
• assess ship resistance and propulsion from model test data
• estimate ship powering considering propeller selection,
propeller/hull interaction, and cavitation
• apply the methods learned to solve hydrodynamic problems in
ship design.
3 Textbooks
Summaries for (most) classes will be posted on the UNO
Moodle web-site but you are expected to consult
additional references as well.
As additional reading material I strongly recommend to get a
copy of the new Principles of Naval Archi-
tecture volume on Ship Resistance and Flow :
L. Larsson and H.C. Raven (2010). The Principles of Naval
Architecture Series: Ship
Resistance and Flow. Society of Naval Architecture and Marine
Engineers (SNAME),
ISBN 978-0-939773-76-3.
There are a few reference books around, which cover some of
the content of this course. A good book is
S.A. Harvald’s (1983) Ship Resistance and Propulsion, John
Wiley & Sons. Unfortunately it is out of print,
however, it is available in the UNO Library. Recently a new
book with similar title has come out which
seems to be a reasonable and affordable replacement:
A.F. Molland, S.R. Turnock and D.A. Hudson (2011). Ship
Resistance and Propulsion:
Practical Estimation of Ship Propulsive Power. Cambridge
University Press.
The UNO Bookstore informed me that the second edition will be
available in October.
For your professional library of references you should also
consider the new Principles of Naval Architecture
volume on Propulsion:
J.E. Kerwin, J.B. Hadler (2010). The Principles of Naval
Architecture Series: Propulsion.
Society of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineers (SNAME),

For some basic fluid mechanics it will help to keep your
textbook from Fluid Mechanics handy. In any
case, you should take notes in class and/or refer to provided
summaries and references.

4 Format and Procedures
Format and conduct
Classes will be taught in an interactive manner. I expect you to
ask questions! Since we use the NAME
Computer Lab as a class room from time to time, distractions
like e-mail, Facebook and YouTube are
readily at hand. Please refrain from using them, because it not
only distracts you, but your classmates
and possibly me as well.
I intend to make use of the UNO Moodle web-site
http://uno.mrooms3.net for this course. Please make
sure you have access and are familiar with the system. There
will be a list with links to notes and pointers
to additional reading and references for each class. I will make
use of e-mail and your UNO e-mail addresses.
Please make sure that you check your UNO e-mail regularly!
Attendance
Your attendance at every class session is important. It is a fact
that students who attend class do better.
Please initial the attendance sheet at the beginning of each
class. If you are unable to attend class (illness,
conflicts with other classes, etc) inform me by e-mail as soon as
possible to avoid negative effects on your
final grade (see Grading Procedures).
Cell phones
Cell phones –as always– are switched off during class. If your
cell phone rings nonetheless you will donate
5 US $ to the SNAME student section of UNO. (Instructor
donates 20 US $ if his cell phone rings in class).
5 Course Assessments
Homework
Homework assignments will be given out about every two
weeks. Usually they will be due two weeks later.
Dates will be specified on the problem sheet. Late submission
of homework will not be accepted, if it is
done without my prior consent.
It is not required to prepare your homework with MS Word,
LATEX, or other word processors. Nevertheless,
I expect your homework to be neat and well organized.
Your homework has to satisfy the following standards:
• return the problem sheet with your name on it
• write neatly and orderly
• start each problem with briefly restating the problem and the
given information in your own words
• describe the steps leading to the solution
• explain choices and assumptions you make
• complete the analysis algebraically before substituting
numerical values

• use units wherever you introduce numerical values
• check your results!
– does the result make sense?
– are the units of the result consistent?
– do your classmates have the same result?
• summarize and discuss results with respect to their accuracy
and significance (e.g. for example by
comparing it with published data).
If your homework does not meet these requirements, it will be
returned for rework!
Some homework may require you to get familiar with a
spreadsheet program (Excel, gnumeric, etc), writing
small programs, or using a commercial software packages.
Exams
There will be a midterm (75 minutes, tentatively on October 5)
and a final exam. I am flexible with the
date of the midterm exam. We will discuss and finalize the date
at least two weeks before the midterm date.
The final exam is scheduled for Thursday December 7, 2017,
5:30pm–7:30pm according to the University
Course Bulletin

All exams will be closed book and only a single page summary
for the midterm and a two page summary
for the final will be allowed. Get organized before the exams!
6 Grading Procedures
The final course grade will be based on the total number of
points scored during the term. The contributions
are weighted as follows:
homework 35 %
mid-term exam 25 %
final exam 40 %
Percentage of points P is then given by
P = 0.35 · your homework points
total homework points
+ 0.25 · your midterm exam points
total midterm exams points
+ 0.40 · your final exam points
total final exam points
.
I will round up every figure to one significant decimal place
(e.g. 90.712 will become 90.8). In case your
final grade is close to a respective boundary (see table below) I
will down-grade it, if the attendance has
been low (more than one unexcused absence).
The percentage of the scored points will define the final grades:

7 Academic Success
This course covers a lot of material. Therefore it is essential for
success that you stay on top of things.
Study the class summaries as soon as they have been posted on
Moodle. Keep pen and notebook handy
and write down questions that come up while you are reading.
Ask questions in class! Studying regularly
will help you to follow the class and you will do better in
homework and exams. Cramming just before
the midterm or final may perhaps get you through the exams but
you missed an opportunity to lay the
foundation for future class work and your professional career.
Homework is meant as a study aid. If you put some effort into
them, it will pay off during exams. This
obviously requires that you start homework well before the due
date. Some of the homework will go
beyond examples discussed in class to train your engineering
skills and encourage you to venture beyond
the immediate course material. If you run into problems with
your homework, discuss them with your
class mates. If you cannot find a logical answer, make use of
my office hours to clear things up. You may
compare results, but do not copy each others work.
8 Academic Integrity
Academic integrity is fundamental to the process of learning
and evaluating academic performance. Aca-

Mini Paper Guidelines
The “Mini Term Paper” must be 1,250 – 2,000 words (typed.
double spaced, with title and reference pages) discussion of the
causes, results, and historical significance of an important issue
or event covered in the course. It should not primarily deal with
a person, but should address the actions, ideas, or values
involved in the issue or event and how that issue or event is
viewed from a Christian worldview. 5 Pages not including the
Cover Page total of 6 pages. Use the References that I attached
for the needed information for the mini paper.
I will need the following mini paper summarized in the
attachment labeled “Mini PaperStudy”. Fill it out or answer the
questions on paper and submit back to me.
Mini Paper Topic
Christians were persecuted by the Romans for a variety of
reasons. The Romans considered Christians to be immoral,
“Theists, unpatriotic, social misfits, etc. Discuss what it was
about the beliefs and lifestyle of Christians in the Roman
Empire that gave rise to these charges.
Short Essay Question
Guide Lines: Please use as many specific facts in your answer
as you can
This course has covered the history of Western Civilization
from the Greeks through the religious wars of the seventeenth
century. What three events were the most significant turning
points for the development of Western Civilization as it exists
today?
Your answer should describe the events you’ve chosen and
explain their significance, including the way in which those
events continue to impact contemporary society.
Preparation suggestions:
1. Identify the 3 events you think are most significant
2. Make lists of the people, places, dates (at least time period),
reasons, and consequences that help describe each event.
3. Consider ways your chosen events may have shaped modern
Western civilization.
4. Develop a strong thesis statement that will shape your
answer.
3 paragraphs, one paper, 3 events on the following topics:
· The Crisis of the 14th Century in the West ( The Black Death:
From Asia to Europe)
· The early Middle Ages (550-1000) Europe terrified by waves
of invaders.
· 14th Century – End of the Age of Faith
(Technology=Knighthood became obsolete)

  • 2. NAME 2160 Form Calculations and Stability 1 Course Description and Rationale Determining resistance and powering requirements is an important part of the ship design process. This course introduces students to marine flow problems and applies principles of fluid mechanics to determine resistance and propulsion characteristics of ships. Room EN 911 2 Course Goals and Outcomes At the end of this course you should be able to • discuss ship flow patterns and resistance components • discuss and apply laws of similitude and dimensional analysis as they relate to ship model testing • assess ship resistance and propulsion from model test data • estimate ship powering considering propeller selection, propeller/hull interaction, and cavitation • apply the methods learned to solve hydrodynamic problems in ship design. 3 Textbooks Summaries for (most) classes will be posted on the UNO Moodle web-site but you are expected to consult additional references as well. As additional reading material I strongly recommend to get a copy of the new Principles of Naval Archi- tecture volume on Ship Resistance and Flow : L. Larsson and H.C. Raven (2010). The Principles of Naval Architecture Series: Ship Resistance and Flow. Society of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineers (SNAME), ISBN 978-0-939773-76-3. There are a few reference books around, which cover some of
  • 4. the content of this course. A good book is S.A. Harvald’s (1983) Ship Resistance and Propulsion, John Wiley & Sons. Unfortunately it is out of print, however, it is available in the UNO Library. Recently a new book with similar title has come out which seems to be a reasonable and affordable replacement: A.F. Molland, S.R. Turnock and D.A. Hudson (2011). Ship Resistance and Propulsion: Practical Estimation of Ship Propulsive Power. Cambridge University Press. The UNO Bookstore informed me that the second edition will be available in October. For your professional library of references you should also consider the new Principles of Naval Architecture volume on Propulsion: J.E. Kerwin, J.B. Hadler (2010). For some basic fluid mechanics it will help to keep your textbook from Fluid Mechanics handy. Since we use the NAME Computer Lab as a class room from time to time, distractions like e-mail, Facebook and YouTube are readily at hand. Please refrain from using them, because it not only distracts you, but your classmates and possibly me as well. I intend to make use of the UNO Moodle web-site http://uno.mrooms3.net for this course. Please make sure you have access and are familiar with the system. There will be a list with links to notes and pointers to additional reading and references for each class. I will make use of e-mail and your UNO e-mail addresses. Please make sure that you check your UNO e-mail regularly! Attendance Your attendance at every class session is important. It is a fact that students who attend class do better. Please initial the attendance sheet at the beginning of each class. If you are unable to attend class (illness, conflicts with other classes, etc) inform me by e-mail as soon as possible to avoid negative effects on your final grade (see Grading Procedures). Cell phones Cell phones –as always– are switched off during class. If your
  • 6. cell phone rings nonetheless you will donate 5 US $ to the SNAME student section of UNO. (Instructor donates 20 US $ if his cell phone rings in class). 5 Course Assessments Homework Homework assignments will be given out about every two weeks. Usually they will be due two weeks later. Dates will be specified on the problem sheet. Late submission of homework will not be accepted, if it is done without my prior consent. It is not required to prepare your homework with MS Word, LATEX, or other word processors. Nevertheless, I expect your homework to be neat and well organized. Your homework has to satisfy the following standards: • return the problem sheet with your name on it • write neatly and orderly • start each problem with briefly restating the problem and the given information in your own words • describe the steps leading to the solution • explain choices and assumptions you make • complete the analysis algebraically before substituting numerical values name3150syllabus.tex, 17-Aug-2017, lb 3

If your homework does not meet these requirements, it will be returned for rework! Some homework may require you to get familiar with a spreadsheet program (Excel, gnumeric, etc), writing small programs, or using a commercial software packages. Exams There will be a midterm (75 minutes, tentatively on October 5) and a final exam. I am flexible with the date of the midterm exam. We will discuss and finalize the date at least two weeks before the midterm date. The final exam is scheduled for Thursday December 7, 2017, 5:30pm–7:30pm according to the University

All exams will be closed book and only a single page summary for the midterm and a two page summary for the final will be allowed. Get organized before the exams! 6 Grading Procedures The final course grade will be based on the total number of points scored during the term. The contributions are weighted as follows: homework 35 % mid-term exam 25 % final exam 40 % Percentage of points P is then given by P = 0.35 · your homework points total homework points + 0.25 · your midterm exam points total midterm exams points + 0.40 · your final exam points total final exam points . I will round up every figure to one significant decimal place (e.g. 90.712 will become 90.8). In case your final grade is close to a respective boundary (see table below) I will down-grade it, if the attendance has been low (more than one unexcused absence).

  • 10. Anything below 67% (C−) will force you to repeat this course. 7 Academic Success This course covers a lot of material. Therefore it is essential for success that you stay on top of things. Study the class summaries as soon as they have been posted on Moodle. Keep pen and notebook handy and write down questions that come up while you are reading. Ask questions in class! Studying regularly will help you to follow the class and you will do better in homework and exams. Cramming just before the midterm or final may perhaps get you through the exams but you missed an opportunity to lay the foundation for future class work and your professional career. Homework is meant as a study aid. If you put some effort into them, it will pay off during exams. This obviously requires that you start homework well before the due date. Some of the homework will go beyond examples discussed in class to train your engineering skills and encourage you to venture beyond the immediate course material. If you run into problems with your homework, discuss them with your class mates. If you cannot find a logical answer, make use of my office hours to clear things up. You may compare results, but do not copy each others work. 8 Academic Integrity Academic integrity is fundamental to the process of learning and evaluating academic performance.
