Cambodian Society And Its Contemporary Political,...
Cambodian society is still affected by almost three decades of civil war that devastated the country physically and psychologically, and faces high
levels of poverty and poor development indicators (Malena and Chhim 2009). Whereas considerable progress has been made since the Peace
Agreements in 1991, Cambodia's recent past has shaped its contemporary political, cultural, and socio–economic context. The characteristics of these
dimensions have contributed to the poor governance of the Cambodian administration as well as a hierarchical system influenced by patrimonial power
structures and patron–client relationships, in which corruption is commonplace (Nikkei Asian Review 2014). Furthermore, this neo–patrimonial system
might persist for various reasons, including: limited notion of social accountability among civil society organizations and the reticence of citizens to
challenge the Government (Johnson, Hyde and Rosenfeld 2014).
However, the public attitudes and levels of awareness are changing in Cambodia, and citizens are increasingly exercising their political voice to change
the system. In addition, the Government's commitment to fighting corruption and governance reform has been reflected since 2004 when Cambodia
started applying the 'Rectangular Strategy for Growth' based on good governance as a main policy (Kevreaksmey et al. 2015). The study in this report
originates from the application of the 'Strategic Governance And Corruption Analysis' (SGACA), a methodology

Essay about The Turks and Mongols
In order to discuss the movements of Asiatic peoples into Europe from the first inroad of the Huns to the conquests of the Osmanli Turks in the
sixteenth century, it will be necessary to review briefly the events in central and eastern Asia which preceded and precipitated these incursions.
From the time that the Irano–Aryan ancestors had arrived in Russian Turkestan in anticipation of their descent into the hills of northwestern India, much
of this grassy plain had been the home of those Iranians who remained behind while their kinsmen climbed the mountains which would take them into
India and the Irano–Afghan plateau. These Iranians apparently developed, or borrowed, a high degree of adaptation to their steppe environment, and ...

When we view the Hunnish inroad into Europe in the light of the total context of Old World history, it ceases to be a strange inruption of hideous and
invincible barbarians darting out of nowhere, as it at first appeared to the Byzantines and Romans. The Huns were a people who had been exposed to a
high civilization that of China; they were cultured if illiterate, and in every sense the match of the frightened adversaries whom they met in Europe.
When we examine the details of these invasions, we see that it was not one simple inroad, but a series of them in which a perplexing confusion of
names is involved. Chief of the newcomers, after the Huns, were the Avars, who arrived in the sixth century. The Huns considered these their kinsmen
and equals, and later amalgamated with them after the Avars had, in the eighth century, been defeated by Charlemagne and had retreated, some to
Hungary and others to the Don country.
From the fall of the Huns until the rise of the Mongols some thousand years later, the history of central Asia is simply a repetition of the same theme;
some obscure sub–tribe would become important, win leadership over the others, and head new invasions of increasing complexity. The history of
southern Russia became extremely complicated, for the steppes of the Don country served as a terminal point for all but the most serious of these
movements.
After the Avars came the Turks, called

Attila The Hun Ethical Leadership
Synthesis Essay– Attila the Hun

30 January 2017 Attila the Hun History has Attila, King of the Huns labeled as a barbaric savage that lacked refinement. The Huns had a powerful
leader who used critical thinking to become one of the most powerful leaders of the time. He civilized the Huns and changed his people from a
nomadic lifestyle that dated back 32 generations. He developed cities and gained territory for his people to settle in and established commerce for
trade and sale of goods. In this paper I will go over the actions, decisions and behaviors that made Attila a visionary leader. Also we will review the
ethical decision that made Attila ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Surprisingly contrary to that he was a man with a vision and led his people ethically to civilize the Huns and make them a very strong nation. His
actions and behaviors united his people and instilled a shared vision of the future. He united tribes that all fought for a common purpose and
stopped fighting themselves. He used ethical behavior in his mannerism and avoided pitfalls by not using silver platters as other kings would.
Finally, I reflected on how I view myself as an ethical and visionary leader rooted in the same principles that Attila believed in. The King of the
Huns inspired a nomadic people to become civilized and establish commerce based on his visionary and ethical leadership. History saw him as a
tyrant, but I see that he truly was one of the greatest leaders of all

Rome’s Forgotten Land Essay
For more than 1,000 years the Romans conquered portions of Europe and brought a tremendous amount of influence to Eurasia. They built a network of
roadways, amazing architectural achievements and order to the tribes they conquered throughout Eurasia. However the one area not influenced by the
Romans was most of Germany, Russia, Yugoslavia and the Czech Republic, this area is also know as Germania. This region did not receive the benefits
that the colonies conquered by Rome received simply because Rome, once it conquered a region, built cities in their communities, spreading Roman
architecture language and transportation systems throughout the regions they overtook.
The Hunnic Empire and the original German tribes were one of the main ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They saw everyone who lived there as barbarians or Germanic. The Germanic tribes that were in the region we now call Germania started out in the
countries of Germany, Russia and northern Czech. The main tribes were the Goths, Vandals, Visigoths, theFranks and the Huns. A quote that talks about
the Huns themselves from the Roman historian Ammianus,
The nation of the Huns... surpasses all other Barbarians in wildness of life...though they have they all have strong limbs and plump necks; they are of
great size, and low legged, so that you might fancy them two–legged beasts, or the fat figures that are carved in a rude manner with an axe at the posts
at the end of bridges... (Ammianus, Rome and Her Enemies, page 288)
The Huns and other Germanic tribes were the main reasons the Romans never occupied Germany for an extended period of time. The Germanic
tribes were very spread out and culturally different. Many of these tribes were not native to Germany; some came from Scandinavia, like the Goths,
who later branched off to become both the Goths and the Visigoths. Others traveled all the way from middle Asia like the Huns. Due to this wide
expansion many of the original tribes like the Ulmerugi who were forced out by the Goths and even the Goths themselves when the Huns entered the
area.
The Germanic tribes themselves were not that organized to begin, many of them did have standing armies. The Germanic tribes were not well equipped

Why were the military campaigns of Attila the Hun successful?
Attila's military success will be explained through his ability to lure the Romans into war on a pretext whenever the Romans were vulnerable. His
motives behind each war was to abstract as much money from the Romans as possible. Also to be explored will be his ability to assert psychological
domination over the Eastern Emperor at a time when the two Empires were at peace. Furthermore to be examined will be his ability to portray himself
as diplomatic through treaties and embassy consultations between the Romans and the Huns. Also to be looked at will be how successful was Attila's at

On the other hand, they may have been quite capable of such construction for it is well documented they had enslaved many tradesmen. As for
example in the bath which was made for the Hunnic noble Onegesius by a craftsman who was captured at Sirmium. Nevertheless the Huns
ransacked and pillaged the Balkans taking fortified cities along the way such as Viminacium, Illyricum and defeated the Roman army at
Chersonese. According to Brian Croke, In 441 the Huns invaded Illyricum only and in 442 broke into northern Thrace . The Romans sued for
peace and the Treaty of Anatolius was agreed. Attila terms demanded that the annual tribute be tripled to 2,100 pounds of gold. He also compelled
the Romans to surrender all Hun deserters and to ransom their own deserters at a rate of twelve solidi each. The treaty, however, contained one
provision that had no precedent. Attila forced the Romans to make an immediate payment of 6,000 pounds of gold. Attila's plan to force a war to
bring about higher subsidies had worked. He would devastate the Balkans for a second time in 447 when he came looking for subsidies that were in
arrears.

The Khmer Rouge Tribunal: Difficulties
The Khmer Rouge Tribunal: Difficulties
By the time the Khmer Rouge regime was ousted from power in 1979, the United Nations Human Rights Commission had already received a 995–page
report of testimonies on massive human rights violations in Democratic Kampuchea . The gravity of the crimes perpetrated was so great that the need
for a judicial instance to render justice seemed evident. According to Francis Deron, the proposal for a Khmer Rouge Tribunal had significant historical
importance as it was the first authentic trial of a communist regime. Never before had officials pertaining directly or indirectly to this type of
ideology had to answer for their actions before impartial judges, but also, to their people and their contemporaries . However, the road leading up to
its creation would prove to be long and arduous.
From the very onset, the establishment of a high tribunal dedicated to trying Khmer Rouge officials faced numerous stumbling blocks. Due to the
power vacuum that was left behind by the fall of the Khmer Rouge, internal political strife surrounding power succession relegated the idea of a
tribunal far down on the priority list. Furthermore, the strongest opposition to the creation of the court came from none ... Show more content on

Mulan Monomyth Essay
Mulan is the ultimate epitome of a hero. Joseph Cambell who said "A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself" ,
characterizes Mulan to perfection. She undergoes changes throughout struggles which shape her into the worthy hero that she is. . Mulan faces both
inner and outer battles that transform her persona to being a hero. According to Joseph Cambell's monomyth, Mulan meets the necessary qualities, as
she portrays them grandly
It all begins with the call to adventure. Mulan hears her father being called to fight for the emperor in a war against the Huns.. Outraged as she was, she

point where she makes sure she knows what she's doing is not an error but something of benefit. For instance, the moment when she sees the Huns army
marching toward her while everyone is stumped, she sees an opportunity to strike them down with snow mounts. When she acts on this, the samurai's
escaped leaving the Huns in a temporary setback. Mulan's samurai sword is her talisman. It has such significance that she holds it in high regard.
When she changes her identity, she takes her fathers' possessions to fight for the emperor and the samurai sword is one of those items. This was
what she used to cut off her hair to pass as a samurai. This was an important moment in her life because it proved that she was dedicated, taking the
call. It was a self assuring moment in which she was sure that she was going to pass as a son of her fathers. Not only this, but the sword was her
force. She didn't know in the beginning of her journey that she would become a great samurai. The way in which she used her sword showed how she
knows how to use it and the better she got with it showed her growth in character. Her sword got her out of bad situations such as the moment where
all seemed lost with the Huns in large numbers ready to attack. When she used the sword as a mirror, she saw the opportunity to take them out,

Who were the Huns, Ottomans, and the Austrians and how did...
In Europe's early history there were many influential superpowers that contributed to the way Europe developed as a whole. Some of these powerful
influences include the Huns, Ottomans, and Austrians. These three forces left their mark on Europe, once they were no more. Whether it is military
tactics, or political ideas, without them Europe wouldn't be what it is today. So who really were the Huns, the Ottomans, and the Austrians? What made
them so powerful that they influenced Europe's course in history as a whole? The earliest were the Huns, one of the most feared groups in all of
history. They were nomads that used their unique war tactics to demolish any tribe or civilization in their way. . In Europe the Huns fought and
defeated the German Goths of Eastern Europe, the Slavs, the Franks from France, and even the Roman Empire, plus and many others. The Huns settled
in the area that is now called Hungary. They caused so much fear and chaos that even the rumor of one of their attacks would cause a community to
travel elsewhere. They traveled westward out of China. They left a clear path, on their way to the west, of panic and devastation. It is even thought
that the Great Wall of China was built as a precaution of a Hunnish attack. The reason they were so feared was their strong and cunning military
forces. They were all skilled bowmen who rode on intimidating horses. This put all their enemies at a disadvantage, which proved successful for the
Huns. Even though bows were

Attila the Hun wasn't actually a very bad guy. And his real name was actually Attila, King of the Huns. He grew up with murderous barbarians his
whole life, and still turned out to be an OK guy. It is known that He had a lot of wives, but no one really knows how many. When he was twelve
years old, he was sent as a hostage to Rome as a peace offering. The book we read said he prowled around on all four limbs on a chain, like an
animal when he got to Rome, even until he was eventually somehow released. The Romans believed Attila to be a normal dirty, grubby, uneducated
barbarian. But Attila was far from the stereotypical "barbarian". Attila was trained to an incredible above–professional level in archery, sword fighting

Attila and his Hunnic Empire
Who was Attila
Attila was the ruler of the Huns from 434 until his death in 453. He was leader of the Hunnic Empire, which stretched from Germany to the Ural
River and from the Danube River to the Baltic Sea. During his rule, he was one of the most fearsome enemies of the Western and EasternRoman
Empire. He invaded the Balkans twice and marched through Gaul (modern France) as far as OrlГ©ans before being defeated at the Battle of
ChГўlons. He refrained from attacking either Constantinople or Rome. Although he reigned almost 20 years as king of the Huns, the image of Attila in

Finally, the repeated raids on the Eastern Roman Empire had left it with little to plunder. In 451, Attila 's forces entered Gaul, with his army recruiting
from the Franks, Goths and Burgundian tribes en route. Once in Gaul, the Huns first attacked Metz, then his armies continued westwards, passing both
Paris and Troyes to lay siege to OrlГ©ans. Aetius was given the duty of relieving OrlГ©ans by Emperor Valentinian III. Bolstered by Frankish and
Visigothic troops (under King Theodoric), Aetius ' own Roman army met the Huns at the Battle of the Catalaunian Plains also known as the Battle of
ChГўlons. Although a tactical defeat for Attila, thwarting his invasion of Gaul and forcing his retreat back to non–Roman lands, the macro historical
significance of the allied and Roman victory is a matter of debate. The following year, Attila renewed his claims to Honoria and territory in theWestern
Roman Empire. Leading his horde across the Alps and into Northern Italy, he sacked and razed the cities of Aquileia, Vicetia, Verona, Brixia,
Bergamum, and Milan. Hoping to avoid the sack of Rome herself, Emperor Valentinian III sent three envoys, the high civilian officers Gennadius
Avienus and Trigetius, as well as the Bishop of Rome Leo I, who met Attila at Mincio in the vicinity of Mantua, and obtained from him the promise
that he would withdraw from Italy and negotiate peace with the emperor. Prosper of Aquitaine gives a short, reliable description of

A Brief Note On The Khmer Rouge Regime
T By July 1992, the Khmer Rouge regime had taken a stance of "non–cooperation", thus causing no PDK forces to be demobilized. Initially, the regime
was on board for the disarmament process and agreed to allow UN forces to mark minefields and enter UN vehicles and troops into the area.
However, once the process began and outside forces were to move in, the regime refused to allow the Dutch and Pakistani forces into the area. The
situation was made more stressful by the PDK 's refusal, as demobilization of the other two factions was at a lower rate than predicted, weakening the
mission 's success. By 1993, the demobilization mission of the forces was stopped all together, resulting in the FUNCINPEC and KPNLF forces to

While the years between 1993 and 1998 lacked any implementation update of demobilization in the peace agreement, it is evident that much of what
was going on in the country was due to the halt in the demobilization process.
Discrimination and mass murders of Vietnamese in Cambodia continued, and regional data on the minority in the country illustrates the need for
external actors to intervene. Hostage situations, ethnic murders, large scale drug smuggling, and an immigration law that targeted Vietnamese in the
country are just some of the issues occurring in these 5 years. In June 1993 the Cambodia Constitution was adopted and signed, which established
Sihanouk as now King and outlined a series of articles that aimed to address issues across the board. The articles protected free speech, human rights of
the Khmer citizens, sovereignty of the nation, and economic policy among many other aspects. The anti–Vietnamese discrimination was rising in
Cambodia, often expressed through hate speech or propaganda of people who blamed the Vietnamese for internal problems of the country. Vietnamese
made up about 5 percent of the population, and although attacks and killings lasted for years in this interim period and was a huge issue, the
constitution still seemed to lack efficiency in addressing this issue. By 1998, the process of demobilization began once again, this time with a more
intense, calculated time table. Along with international financial

Examples Of Confucianism In The Movie Mulan
Mulan, a tale of adventure and honor, is not only an engaging film to watch, but it also contains an amazing amount of historical accuracy concerning
religions in China. The film Mulan is historically accurate in its portrayal of Daoist ideas, the expected behavior of women according to Confucianism,
and Confucian relationships.
First of all, the movie Mulan is historically accurate in its portrayal of Daoist thoughts. One of the main Daoist thoughts is that nature's function is
better than constructs or actions taken by humans. This is well represented when Mulan faces an army of Huns at the alps. Instead of having taking a
more human–focused route by firing the cannon directly at the approaching army, she acts like a true Daoist and shoots ... Show more content on

In this philosophy, relationships that people share with others are considered to be extremely important. The relationship between a father and a son is
a significant hierarchical relationship, and in this kind of relationship the sons must treat their fathers with immense respect. This type of relationship is
best exemplified in the scene where Shang mourns his dead father's loss with a small shrine with his father's helmet. It's a respectful and thoughtful
way that a son would react to his parent's death, and the importance of the father–son relationship is really emphasized in this scene. Another important
relationship in Confucianism is the one shared between a ruler and his subjects. The subject's responsibility is to follow that of the ruler, and the
ruler's is to take care of his subjects. This relationship is shown in the second scene of the film, when Shang's father and the emperor discuss the
possible ways to handle the Hun invasion. Instead of sending his troops to protect his own palace, as suggested by Shang's father, the emperor
commands him to send the troops to protect the people of China. This action shows that the emperor regards the ruler–subject relationship as important
by fulfilling his obligation to take care of his subjects. Another way the father–child relationship is accurately portrayed is the strong bond that Mulan
and her father possess.

What Were Roman Attitudes Toward Attila The Hun?
Introduction
Attila, also known as Attila the Hun (b.?– d. 453 CE), was arguably the greatest ever Hunnic leader who devastated the Roman Empire, particularly in
the West, and was one of the primary contributors to its downfall. There has been extensive debate about where Attila's people, theHuns, actually came
from. Although there is a lack of evidence on the origins of the Huns, the two main theories are that they either: originated from somewhere around
Kazakhstan and central Asia; or that they are descendants of the ancient Xiongnu people, thought to be from the north of China.
Atilla and the Huns invaded the Roman Empire mainly from the east in the year c. 441 CE. From extensive research it is conclusive that Attila invaded
the Roman Empire simply for power and land. Attila significantly weakened the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Romans generally thought lowly of Attila and his people, with the exception being Priscus, a Roman diplomat and writer born in Greece. The
Huns are routinely depicted as savages, especially by ancient writers such as Ammianus Marcellinus (4th century CE) and Jordanes (6th century CE).
However, Priscus of Panium (5th century CE) describes them in a better light. He actually met Attila, dined with him, and stayed in the Hun settlement.
His description of Attila somewhat gives us the impression of a humble and generous man as opposed to a vicious warlord,
In stark contrast to Priscus, the impact Attila had on Rome is apparent by the fact that Roman writers and people considered him to be a ruthless
murderer hell–bent on destroying their beloved Empire. Christopher Kelly reinforces this view in his book, writing
These exaggerated views of Attila and his people by the Romans comes as a sharp reminder to not make a final assessment of the Huns. Any
satisfactory judgment is unlikely to be so clear cut – hence the importance of Priscus' writings in providing a more nuanced vision of Attila and his
people.

The Huns Dbq
The Huns, a nomadic people group, were first known to exist in the central Asian steppes. They were also known as one of the greatest threats in the
5th century. The Huns were a significant part of the start of the downfall of Rome. From a small group of barbaric warriors to one of the most
powerful kingdoms in the 5th century, the Huns devastated everything they attacked. But the question remains, how did they do it? The Huns were so
successful in conquering Europe and Asia because of their great leader, unique fighting style, and the fear they struck into the hearts of their enemies.
Hunic tribes began their chapter in history with unorganized and separate attacks during the late 300s in Central Asia and different parts of Europe such

This perception may be true at times, but the Huns new exactly what they were good at and used that to their advantage. The Huns were raised to
be great warriors and hunters. They would learn how to ride horses and shoot a bow, a skill in which they exceeded. Their exceptional riding
capabilities let the Huns use mobility as one of their main assets in battle. Even though some Huns used other weapons such as swords, whips, and
spears, the Huns' preferred weapon was the bow and arrow. Few Huns wore armor because armor was something a higher ranked official would
dress in. The combination of the bow with a skilled rider led to the Huns being a fierce attack force. Their favorite battle style was a battle fought far
away from the enemy. They could be deadly with their bows from afar and then use their horses to keep the distance while still shooting. Their hit and
run style of fighting was a way of battle that the Eastern Roman Empire was not used to dealing with. This way of fighting helped the Huns conquer the

What If All Princesses Shared All The Same Traits?
What if all princesses shared all the same traits? Im sure you can think of a few traits that are shared by the origina Disney princesses. Most of the
"ideal" Disney princesses that young girls/boys look up too are not necessarily the best characters to look up to. Princesses such as Snow White,
Little Mermaid and of course the most popular, Cinderella. In most movies princesses are portrayed as passive, happy homemakers, that rely solely
on waiting for a man to give them a reason worth living.Critics Gillam and Wooden have argued that " Feminist thought that has shaped our cultural
texts for three decades now has been somewhat disappointing in its ability to actually rewrite princess trope (the spunkiest of the "princesses," Ariel,
Belle, Jasmine, and arguably, even Mulan, remain thin, beautiful, kind, obedient or punished for disobedience, and headed for the altar"(Gillam

only is her Disney character based on a true story which is based in China during the Han dynasty and the need for men to fight in the Chinese army.
Mulan is a unique disney princess because she steps out of the social norms of what other princess do and shows how strong, independent she can be
and whose fate doesn 't rely upon a male character. Many critics have analyzed the gender roles that Disney shows all throughout their movies.

China's Defeat Of The Huns
During its decline and ultimately its subsequent fall towards the end of the fifth century, the Western Roman Empire witnessed the significant political
disruption, civil war, and frequent barbarian invasions from the north. Of these groups that continuously invaded the Western Roman Empire included,
but was not limited to, the Huns who were a pastoralist tribe originating from East Asia, north of China. The Huns caused a great deal of problems for
many during the fifth century. They were almost successful in taking down the classical world, and even though they were backwards in a sense, they
were always great fighters and excelled at war. Like many pastoralist tribes, the Huns spent most of their time training or fighting. They even developed

Other Germanic tribes "came under new pressure when the Huns... moved into the Black Sea Region" because of how fierce they actually were
(Duiker and Spielvogel 165). The Black Huns defeat the Visigoths, and the Visigoths were forced to flee. As a result of their defeat, the Visigoths
found themselves begging the Romans for asylum. The Romans agreed and allowed the Visigoths to settle comfortably in the Roman Empire, however,
as time passed this did not work because the Romans did not treat the Visigoths nicely. As a result, the Visigoths rebelled against the Romans because
they treated them mean. In 378 A.D., the Battle of Adrianople took place between the Visigoths and the Romans. The battle proved to be a major
upset, and the Visigoths defeated the Roman army. In the past, if the Romans lost then they could regroup and fight again until they win the war. Now,
it has gotten to the point where the Romans have no more resources to do that anymore. After Adrianople, the Visigoths began to wander around the
Roman Empire, killing, destroying, and even stealing. They even tried to attack Constantinople, and the Romans were unable to stop them. The

Hunnic Bow
The Huns were a nomadic tribe originating in the Caspian steppes potentially as early as the first century A.D. It is likely that they stem from the
Hsiung–nu. They were incredibly successful conquerors, and the Hunnic bow is an integral part of what made the Huns so successful. The expert
craftsmanship and the perfected design allowed the Huns to produce the best bows in the world. The Huns lived in Eastern Europe and because they
are nomads they did not have agriculture. They relied on herding to a certain extent, but trade, raiding, and exacting tribute were also incredibly
important to the Hunnic economy. At least two of those things require the Huns to be a powerful fighting force. The Huns did fight with axes and

The innovation was in how the Huns redesigned the bow. The Hunnic war bow was a compound bow which was "reflexed", meaning that when
unstrung it would actually curve in the opposite way it was intended to be used. The process for making these bows is incredibly complex. First horn
from the Hungarian Grey Steer was cut into strips and filed smooth. It was then submerged in boiling water and it slowly straightened as it softened
(the softening was not permanent; it only persists while the horn was being boiled) in the water. The now–flat strips of horn were then filed down to
their final thickness. A wood was selected for the core (of the bow limbs) and dried. The horn was then glued to the back of the wood and the limbs
were glued to the handle. The ears (the part that curves backwards) were then carved (usually out of spruce because it is light and stiff) and glued to
the end of the bow at roughly a forty–five degree angle. The bow was then backed with layers of sinews (often deer leg tendons). Sometimes the
joints between the ears and the limbs and the limbs and the handle were also bound with hide. Then the seven bone plaques are cut into rough
trapezoids to match the contours of the bow and glued into place. Then the process of tuning the bow begins. Each part of the bow is heated and
slowly curved until the entire bow is uniform. All told it can take years to properly make and tune a Hunnic bow if you include the time to cure the
wood, sinews, and glue. The two greatest differences between the Hunnic bow and other compound bows are the asymmetry of the arms and the bone
stiffeners in the ears and handle. The bone plates are trapezoidal to better fit together along the contours of the bow, and they were deliberately
scratched and roughened to ensure the glue would hold. Glue for these bows was often derived from the air bladder of a sturgeon although other glues

Analysis Of Mulan
The Ordinary World : In the 1998 film, Mulan, the ordinary world for the main character, Mulan, is a world where she is not accepted for who she
is. In her town, women must be ladylike and find a husband at an early age. Mulan is an independent girl who is tomboyish and clumsy; the opposite
of what is expected of her. In Mulan's society being able to be the "perfect" woman and be pretty, smart, and graceful brings honor to one'sfamily, but
Mulan cannot seem to fit these standards which makes her family disappointed. This is shown well in the scene with the matchmaker. Mulan's
mother has people come and dress mulan in fine garments, has her makeup done, and her hair put up in a beautiful style. She is taught the correct
things to say and do towards the matchmaker and her grandmother even gives her a lucky cricket to make sure things will go well. But, in the end
mulan ends up spilling tea on the matchmaker and being told she is a disgrace to her family. Overall in the ordinary world Mulan tries to fit into
society's mold to make her parents proud, but in the end fails to act like the person she is not.
First Threshold : After Mulan steals her father's sword and armor to leave her home and go fight in the war in her call to adventure she reaches the
first threshold. For Mulan this is the training camp for the Chinese Army. Mulan is surrounded by only men while she must pretend to be a man
herself, which is very difficult considering she has been taught her whole life to be a

shield and a helmet and they had a composite bow and some had swords and lances. Sometimes they would have other weapons that they fought with.
One of the other weapons they used was a net. They used nets to throw over their enemies, when they were close, and trapped them. They were a

The Huns In Disney's Mulan
1.1 The Huns
From the very beginning the Huns in Disney's Mulan are portrayed as evil incarnate. In the opening scenes, they are associated with an eerie
atmosphere heightened by ominous sounds. The Huns do not appear immediately; they are introduced by suspense, preceded by the appearance of a
bird of prey. A Chinese soldier, standing guard on the Great Wall of China is not even attacked by the falcon, he is caught by its wing, almost as if the
Huns were trying to warn their enemies of their arrival, showing that they do not fear the resistance.
Fig. 1. Hayabusa the falcon. Walt Disney Animation Studios, 1998. Author's screenshot.
The picture that emerges is either that of the incompetent Chinese soldiers or an unknown danger, sneaking around, undetectable even by trained eyes.
As the falcon, which the audience later learns belongs to the main antagonist, is the primary signal of an impending threat, the first climbing hook
thrown over the wall is supposed to draw attention towards the place from where the enemy comes. The multitude of hooks that follows is just meant
to build up the atmosphere and intimidate both, the audience and the Chines soldiers in the cartoon. For one moment they look like a swarm, ready to
attack. It is clear now that the threat is extremely deadly, as the Huns come out of nowhere, in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Interestingly, the hierarchy of the army coincides with the fact that the audience does not see the majority of the Hun soldiers as individual characters.
Only Shan Yu and his elite warriors are shown in more detail, depicted as worthy of the attention. This major lack of specificity brings the association
with a swarm of insects; the Hun soldiers are not only deprived of their humanity, but also their status as primates is uncertain. As a group they are no

How Did The Unfit Emperors Lead To The Fall Of Rome
The Western Roman Empire was one of the greatest Empires of the world
In the Western Roman Empire politics was the first contributing factor the fall of it. One of the many reasons is because of their unfit emperors.
They had many. The ones who were unfit, were greedy and used cruelty to control and keep control of their empire. Not all showed the ability to be
the emperor, some of them inherited the throne, and some of the people who did had a mentally unstable personality. Some Emperors were
assassinated by their Praetorian Guard for position or money. Once the Praetorian Guard assassinates the emperor, if they had a leader their leader
would become the emperor. As a result of the unfit emperors civil wars broke out across Rome. Legions fought one another. The citizens of the... Show

The empire was to gigantic to protect. They had used natural borders. For example, rivers which were impossible to protect and control. They also
built walls, but they didn't have enough legionaries to protect them. Roman legionaries became so caught up in salaries and control over the throne
that they lost focus on their jobs. Roman legionaries became weak therefore the Romans hired Germanic mercenaries. Mercenaries are people who

legionaries lost focus on their job, the Germanic tribes found that it was the best time to attack Rome. When they did they destroyed some of the
aqueducts which shortened the fresh water supply. This was a very smart thing for the Germanic tribes to do because you can only live without fresh
water for less than a week. When the rivers, Rhine and Danube Rivers, froze it helped the invaders sense they could just walk over it. Which is exactly
what helped Germanic Chief Alaric and Germanic tribes invade Rome and burn it to the ground in 410

Attila The Hun Essay example
Attila the Hun is known as one of the most ferocious leaders of ancient times. He was given the nickname "Scourge God" because of his ferocity.
During the twentieth century, "Hun" was one of the worst name you could call a person, due to Attila. The Huns were a barbaric and savage group of
people, and Attila, their leader, was no exception. He was the stereotypical sacker of cities and killer of babies.
The Huns lasted long after their disappearance in mythology and folklore, as the bad guy. Generally, they were not fun people to be around. Priscus saw
Attila the Hun at a banquet in 448. Priscus described him as being a short, squat man with a large head and deep–set eyes. He also had a flat nose and a
thin beard.

When they were forced to fight in close combat, they often fought without regard to their own safety. They often fought with swords, and they threw a
net over their enemy as to entangle his limbs so that he could no longer walk or ride or horse. This is how they earned the title of Barbarians. The
Romans initial impression of the Huns was fear. But after awhile, the Huns settled on the coast of Danube, the great Hungarian Plain, and became allies
of the Romans, instead of attacking them as enemies. In return, the Roman Empire paid them a sum of money to not attack them Roman Empire.
The Huns agreed with this, and remained mostly neutral toward the Romans for about fifty years. Things between the Romans and the Huns began to
fall apart when Attila was named King of the Huns in 434. Attila and his brother, Bleda, inherited a large empire. They had been made joint kings of a
vast area from the Alps to the Caspian seas, in the east, to the Baltic Sea in the West.
Because of the Roman treaty with the Huns at Margus, The Romans had to pay the Huns seven hundred pounds of gold annually to leave them alone.
Attila's actions between 435 and 439 are basically unknown, and were not major or overly important. It is said that he may have subdued barbarians to
the north of east of his dominions, but no one can be sure. In 441, Rome had become delinquent on their payments to the Huns, so Attila and Bleda
decided to attack the Roman Empire.

Rome Was Different From The Steppes
Rome was different from the steppes.
For one, there were more trees. Dense forests dotted the landscape back east but here in the west they rolled on for miles and miles, making it
harder for the large horde to travel on horseback. At least the roads helped. Romans were meticulous about their roads, and their insistence about the
width made it easier for riders to ride two by two, as well as for the large carts to pass through unscathed. Roads to the east were merely dirt paths
carved over time, little more than dirt impressions winding through a sea of grass.
Although grateful for them, Attila didn't need the roads. Despite the trees he could have navigated his men through the thick forests, though it would

It was a damning piece of parchment. Her brother had been sending legions to the east to stop the encroaching Huns. He would not have allowed his
sister to write the letter and if he had been entertaining the idea of an alliance, then he would have written it himself.
This was treason.
Yet the idea was intriguing. Attila had been married once before, but both his wife and child were dead and buried alongside the trails in the
steppes. With no legitimate heir to his dynasty, there had already been quarrels amongst the host as to who should step in if, and more importantly
when, the king died. Some suggested one of his acknowledged sons from the trail women. Though not born of a proper union, they were still his
blood. Others said that he should pick from his most trusted generals. Attila had made no decision either way, however. In fact the inferred idea that
he would not sire any more children offended him. He was a young man, not a lecher too old to rise to the occasion... He could still father a true heir.
And who better than a princess from the west, beautiful and young, and considering the ring that Attila had wrapped around his neck with a bit of
leather, who was also eager to become his wife?
So the decision was made. Attila chose from the main host a few hundred men to accompany him to Rome. It was dangerous riding into the heart of
the empire but with a smaller group travelling with him, it would be easier to avoid patrols and outposts.

Pol Pot: Genocide In Cambodia
The Communist Party of Kampuchea, also known as the Khmer Rouge, took control of Cambodia on April 17, 1975, which lasted until January 1979.
For their three–year, eight–month, and twenty–one day rule of Cambodia, the Khmer Rouge committed some of the most heinous crimes in current
history. The main leader who orchestrated these crimes was a man named Pol Pot. In 1962, Pol Pot had become the coordinator of the Cambodian
Communist Party. The Prince ofCambodia, Norodom Sihanouk, did not approve of the Party and forced Pol Pot to flee to exile in the jungle. There,
Pol formed a fortified resistance movement, which became known as the Khmer Rouge, and pursued a guerrilla war against Sihanouk's government. As

On January 7, 1979, Phnom Penh fell and Pol Pot was deposed. These events were later to be known as the Cambodian Genocide.
Ever since the actions in Cambodia occurred, it has been debated whether it was an actual genocide. The general definition of genocide is the
purposeful and methodical execution of a national, racial, political, or cultural group. The Khmer Rouge in Cambodia demonstrated that a government
can be guilty of genocide against its own nation. The radical communist party led by Pol Pot took over Cambodia from 1975 to 1979. After 1979, the
Khmer Rouge left a traumatized Cambodian culture that continues to undergo the repercussions of the genocide. People over the age of forty in
Cambodia have stories to tell of fear, cruelty, hunger and the loss of family members. However, the Cambodian government is not making an effort to
recognize the negative occurrences that have posed itself in the history of their culture.
After the Pol Pot invasion ended and Cambodian began to heal from its past, Prime Minister Hun Sen came into power. He conducted a
socialist–democratic government in Cambodia from 1989 to 1993. During his time in office, he offered the remaining Khmer Rouge exemption from
persecution, given that they make a public request for forgiveness and agreed to vow commitment to his government (Brunner, Borgna "The Khmer
Rouge"). This policy had come under public scrutiny for allowing many former Khmer Rouge commanders to become

Barbaric Nomads Analysis
There are many ancient sources stating that the Huns themselves were barbaric nomads. Ammianus Marcellinus, a Roman writer states in the History
of Rome, that "The nation of the Huns surpasses all other barbarians in wildness of life... They fight in no regular order of battle... It must be owned
that they are the most terrible of warriors because they fight at a distance with missile weapons having sharpened bones admirably fastened to the shaft.
When in close combat with swords, they fight without regard to their own safety" . Marcellinus sees how the Huns fighting style is completely
different to that of the Romans and therefore finds it to be extremely terrible. The exaggerated language and bias of this piece is clear and as a Roman

For example, Jordanes, a 6th Century Roman bureaucrat, describes how "[Attila] was indeed a lover of war, yet restrained in action; mighty in
counsel, gracious to suppliants, and lenient to those who were once received under his protection" . Furthermore, Attila refused to be seduced by
wealth as Priscus explains how "Attila ate nothing but meat on a wooden trencher... his cup was of wood, while to the guests were given goblets of
gold and silver. His dress, too, was quite simple, affecting only to be clean. The sword he carried at his side, the latchets of his Scythian shoes, and the
bridle of his horse were not adorned, like those of the other Scythians, with gold or gems or anything costly" . Both of these accounts document how
humble Attila could be, Huns valued gold, and would often brag about their wealth, but, as these two accounts document, Attila acted modestly about
his wealth. Furthermore, Priscus observed Attila with his son and noted a tenderness, as he wrote: "He drew him close... and gazed at him with gentle
eyes" . As Roman writers Priscus and Jordanes gain nothing by writing positively about Attila, and therefore we can assume that these accounts are

The Rise Of The Roman Empire
In 448 AD, Greek writer and historian Priscus journeyed from Constantinople to meet with Attila the Hun. Pricus wrote down the events of his journey,
leaving one of the few first–hand accounts of a diplomatic meeting with the Huns. His writings can tell us much about how the Huns interacted with
other cultures and societies and how Attila–specifically–welcomed his guests to his court. Europe, in the 5th century, was undergoing many societal
changes. Many of these changes were associated with the introduction of new barbarian tribes–barbarian is derived from the Greek word babblers
meaning anyone who did not speak Greek. During the decline of the Roman Empire, many barbaric tribes took the opportunity to attack. The migration
of barbarians closer to Rome put stress on an already stressed Roman government. The increased tension eventually lead to an outbreak of wars. In 410
Rome was sacked by the Visigoths–lead by Alaric–and was attacked again in 455 but the Vandals("Dining With Attila the Hun, 448"). Attacks on the
Roman Empire by the Huns did not start until the middle of the 5th century. The Huns crossed the Danube in 441, upon crossing they sacked the city of
Margus ("Late Roman Timeline"). The Huns–in 442– cross the Danube again this time sacking more cities than they had the previous year. The Roman
government began to grow fearful of the army Attila had established under his rule. This fear forced the Roman Empire to start paying Attila and his

Tamerlane was an Islamic leader, who was called "Timur the Lame" as a result of a war injury that causes him to limp. He has battled without

death in 1405, because he'd "burned and buried people alive," built building with human captives, destroyed peoples' farmland etc. Unfortunately he

These men were great warriors, I believed they must have been called barbarians because they'd sacrifice even family for what they think benefits the

Attila the Hun and Genghiz Khan where the most strategic, their empire last longer than Tamerlane, who was obviously cruel and very well deserve to

War, genocide, and a violent coup during the late 20th century left Cambodia decimated and controlled by a corrupt dictatorship under Prime
Minister Hun Sen. Sen led the Cambodian People's Party (CPP) in the aftermath of these bloody conflicts, and has served as Prime Minister for over
30 years through unfair and illegal means. Hun Sen wields violence and intimidation to keep his people from rising up against him. Also, the CPP has
inflicted thousands of civilian deaths and withheld billions of dollars of foreign aid from their struggling people. Although foreign countries send
hundreds of millions of dollars in foreign aid annually to Cambodia, the funds have provided little benefit to people other than corrupt government

Foreign aid causes an imbalance between revenue and expenses, because it allows government officials, no matter the debt, to spend far more than
national revenues. The aid covers both the debt and the economic deficit that occurs each year due to low taxation rates and high personal expenses
by government officials, such as the improvement of personal boat docks. Foreign aid is higher than the tax base of the country. This creates an
environment where the government is not held accountable by the people. Higher ranking officials see corruption as a way of life, and refuse to
change because they do not know any other way of living. Corruption in Cambodia has become an epidemic, and according to foreign aid expert, Ear

Thomas Foster's Themes Traced in Mulan In his book How to Read Literature Like a Professor, Thomas Foster explains many reoccurring themes in
literature, and shows how to recognize them and in some instances shows certain works where they occur. By reading this guide to literature, one may
gain a deeper understanding of the work itself and of the author's intent in writing it. However, Foster's methods can also be applied to films. A film
that contains many of the various themes, models, symbolism, and devices discussed in his book is Walt Disney's Mulan. Mulan is a character type
with which people are familiar. Foster discusses this process of association in the chapter "Now ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After Mulan has failed in her encounter with the matchmaker, she goes home and begins singing the marvelous, gripping song called
"Reflection". She asks, "When will my reflection show who I am inside?" She realizes that her fair appearance does not reflect her feelings.
Singing this song, she washes away her makeup, and gives up on becoming the perfect daughter and bride; it is a baptism. Maybe it would be key
to mention that during this song, Mulan sings in a downpour of rain. Just like Foster describes in his book, Mulan is 'baptized' in the rain. Disney
movies are not notorious for their violent nature. So, when something violent occurs in a Disney movie, or an individual (or animal in many cases)
dies, it must carry some kind of importance. In the chapter of his book "More Than It's Gonna Hurt You", Fosters says that there is usually more to
violence than just violence. When Mulan is struck by the sword of Shan Yu, many more things happen to her than a fatal wound. She almost meets
her demise, and for the first time, the reality of war sets in. Mulan realizes that she is not invincible and grasps the perils of war for the first time.

the people of the Huns who dwell beyond the Sea of Azov near the frozen ocean, and are quite abnormally savage. They were just so fierce that it was

From these accounts we can assume that the Huns had some uncivilised traits, but, that does not necessarily make Attila a barbaric or bad leader.

The Causes Of The Khmer Rouge
The Khmer Rouge carried out one of the most horrific genocides in the twentieth century. The nation of Cambodia was in a near–decade civil war
between the Communist (Khmer Rouge) and the monarchy and then the Khmer Republic. The Khmer Rouge won the civil war and controlled all of
Cambodia from 1975 to 1979. During this time, they committed horrific crimes against their own people. This genocidal regime was one of the worst
events in the later years of the 1900s, and it is not well talked about in schools. The Khmer Rouge movement started back in the 1940s when Cambodia
was fighting for freedom from the French government. Over the years, the Northern Vietnamese influenced much of the group's practices and beliefs.
They gained so much members during the Lon Nol era because many Cambodian people lost family from the American bombings (whom Lon Nol
was allied with). Through fear and threats, the Khmer Rouge scared the people into moving into the countryside. They abolished all things that have
to do with capitalism. They brainwashed people into starving the population, torturing the "accused", and murdering any who oppose the Khmer
Rouge way of life and leadership. This led to widespread poverty of Cambodia, and the people learned to love and respect everyone because of the
hate shown to them during this horrific event. Many, til this day, still do not share their stories of what happened during this time because they are
scared to be reminded of what was committed against them. That is why the country is still corrupt today because the two–decade old prime minister
Hun Sen was an ex–Khmer Rouge Soldier. The Khmer Rouge group was created in the 1940s, but it was during the Vietnam War that the KR gained
more power and became more prominent. The Khmer Rouge is an off–shot from the North Vietnamese government and essentially was funded by their
government. The Vietnamese helped to make the KR a real political party in the Cambodian political system. Without their help, they could not afford
to provide a whole army guns, military vehicles, and other military resources. It was in 68' when the group launched a full scale national uprising.

Portrayal Of ' Attila '
Portrayal of Attila
As we know, being a leader requires being influential or being a charisma, whether its in a positive or a negative way.
Though, scrolling through the pages of history, we sometimes see the portrayal of leading figures that have been depicted differently in numerous
descriptions. When it comes to one of the most dreading military leaders throughout history, Attila, who unified and ruled over the the barbaric nomadic
called the Huns. Many accounts depicted such leader in different or similar horizons but with numerous approaches and backgrounds. Prosper, a
Christian reporter; Jordanes, an official in the Roman government; a Greek writer known as Priscus; lastly Ammianus Marcilinus together a Roman
soldier and historian all depicted the leader, who would later be granted with the name "Scourge of God", depending on their perspectives and the way
they were treated.
If we look and evaluate the accounts on Attila, there are differences and similarities. However, they are not entirely opposite; in fact, they share some
definite commonalities. The most obvious similarity that we can easily tell about the accounts is that their authors arose inside the Roman empire. Also,
they all want to focus solely on the facts about the leader not other unnecessary information. The Roman Empire which was recognized for its civilized
culture, innovations and social organization, was the most competitive rival for the Huns, and the Empire saw Attila as a real threat having

Good And Evil Characters In The Disney Film Mulan
For my fairy tale I chose the Disney film Mulan. I chose Mulan because it is an entertaining movie that delivers a good moral lesson. Mulan has your
classic characters, the hero, the evil villain, but Mulan also pays homage and respect to the sacred spirits of her people. In this paper I will discuss
Mulan's story of courage, prayer, and determination. I will cover some important symbolism, imagery, and messages found within the film. I will also
identify good and evil characters in the film and their respective roles in the movie.
Mulan
The story of Mulan was inspired by an ancient Chinese ballad from the Song Dynasty, called the Ballad of Mulan (ancientstandard.com). In the
movie Mulan's homeland is being attacked by The Huns. Everyone is here village is afraid and begins to gearing up for an imminent war. Every
family is required to provide a member from their respective families to help defend themselves against the invading Huns. Mulan's father is the only
male in her family and decides he must fight and defend his village against their approaching enemy. The problem is he is old and has previous war
wounds that makes his chances of surviving such a war is unlikely. Recently rejected by her matchmaker and potential husband Mulan decides to
disguise herself as a male and represent her family in her father's place. This decision leads Mulan on an uncertain and dangerous journey that teaches
her and the movie viewers many valuable lessons.
The Sacred
Before Mulan heads to war she prays to her deceased ancestors for protection on her journey. The term used for praying to ancestors is called ancestor
veneration (religionfacts.com). Prayers to ancestors is based on the belief that family members who have died have an interest in present life. These
ancestors possess the ability to influence what happens in the lives of their family members still on earth. Mulan and her family seek the guidance from
their ancestors throughout the movie. Mulan's ancestors grant her protection and a small dragon named Mushu who they communicate with in regards
to Mulan's best interest. Mulan reverenced the spirits of her ancestors in the same way people reverence God, Allah, and other god like entities.

interminably for the switch, holding the jamb in his usual deathgrip, his eyes squinched shut, the tip of his tongue poked from the corner of his mouth

ever today, because of the flood. Their house was high on Witcham Street, near the crest of the hill, and they had escaped the worst of it, but there was
still standing water down there that had seeped in through the old rock foundations. The smell was low and unpleasant, making you want to take only
the shallowest breaths. George sifted through the junk on the shelf as fast as he coutd–old cans of Kiwi shoepolish and shoepolish rags, a broken

Shan Yu: An Example Of Extreme Demonization
The leader of the Huns, Shan Yu, is an example of extreme demonization. He is portrayed amost like a legend of sorts, a nightmare that if you get
caught is sure to kill you. He possesses the most terrifying appearance of all the Huns and his personality is almost absent, considering that all the
traits he displays lead to either sociopathic or psychopathic tendencies. Even if not much is known about the Army itself and its soldiers, Shan Yu is
clearly defined as a character. Almost instantly from the moment when he appears in the cartoon, he is not only demonized, he is very nearly portrayed
as a personification of a demonic spirit itself.
Fig. 11. "Shan Yu."Walt Disney Animation Studios, 1998. Author's screenshot.
In the first scene that Shan Yu appears he is obviously well–built, has an almost ridiculously muscular body, to the point where his arms look almost
overgrown. Shan Yu resembles a gorilla, with his slim waist, sturdy legs and the grotesque torso. He is wearing leather, which refers to the
recollections of original clothing, which, according to Michael Lee Lanning, consisted of "layers of heavy leather greased with liberal applications of
animal fat, making their battle dress both supple and rain resistant," later adding that "the Hun warriors wore soft leather boots that were excellent for
riding but fairly useless for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The attempt at intimidation does not work, as Shan Yu only states "perfect" and continues with his plan. It shows that the leader of theHuns is very
confident, almost to the point of foolishness, and he seems to possess a very small range of emotions: anger and contempt. That portrayal of Shan Yu
is very close to the description of Attila created by William James Durant, an American writer, historian, and philosopher, who mentioned

Cambodia's Corrupt and Tragic Reign of Khmer Rouges Essays
39 years ago, Cambodia was misfortunate with creating one the saddest tragedies of the 20th century. It started off with the fall of the Khmer Republic,
when the communist Khmer Rouges took over the country that led to the slaughtering of over 2 million people. After four dark years, what's left was a
civil war torn country that was left unstable throughout the 90's with a corrupted Prime Minister name Hun Sen. Sen, a former Khmer Rouge led
Cambodia as Prime Minister; Second to the King. On July 28th, 2013, it was the day of the elections where everything was set to change. The
citizens that represented Cambodia went to the polls and voted. For some people, it was their first time voting and for all, it was a vote as if their lives ...

On Chapter 7 Article 91 of the Constitution, it states, "The deputies shall have the right to propose any amendments to the laws, but, the proposals shall
be unacceptable if they aim at reducing public income or increasing the burden on the people." Throughout the peaceful protests, authorities of the state
of Phnom Penh clashed and burned anything that had to do with a revolution that was suddenly taking place.
Although the Paris Agreement was taken place on October 23rd, 1991, Hun Sen had broken many of the regulations regarding to what stated on the
agreement. It is believed that "The Cambodian Parties hereby commit themselves to demobilize all their remaining forces before or shortly after the
elections and, to the extent that full demobilization is unattainable, to respect and abide by whatever decision the newly elected government that
emerges in accordance with Article 12 of this Agreement takes" meaning that the UNTAC will control and guard all the arms, ammunition and
equipment of the Parties throughout the transitional period; However, Hun Sen took over the UNTAC and took out any protesting parties that had a
chance to ruin his regime. Thus, it leds to another reason to why Hun Sen should be tried and convicted of the illegal acts he'd committed in Cambodia.
Sometimes, a snake can be easily disguised throughout the grass laid beneath it. People forget that

Cambodian Society And Its Contemporary Political,...

  • 1. Cambodian Society And Its Contemporary Political,... Cambodian society is still affected by almost three decades of civil war that devastated the country physically and psychologically, and faces high levels of poverty and poor development indicators (Malena and Chhim 2009). Whereas considerable progress has been made since the Peace Agreements in 1991, Cambodia's recent past has shaped its contemporary political, cultural, and socio–economic context. The characteristics of these dimensions have contributed to the poor governance of the Cambodian administration as well as a hierarchical system influenced by patrimonial power structures and patron–client relationships, in which corruption is commonplace (Nikkei Asian Review 2014). Furthermore, this neo–patrimonial system might persist for various reasons, including: limited notion of social accountability among civil society organizations and the reticence of citizens to challenge the Government (Johnson, Hyde and Rosenfeld 2014). However, the public attitudes and levels of awareness are changing in Cambodia, and citizens are increasingly exercising their political voice to change the system. In addition, the Government's commitment to fighting corruption and governance reform has been reflected since 2004 when Cambodia started applying the 'Rectangular Strategy for Growth' based on good governance as a main policy (Kevreaksmey et al. 2015). The study in this report originates from the application of the 'Strategic Governance And Corruption Analysis' (SGACA), a methodology ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Essay about The Turks and Mongols In order to discuss the movements of Asiatic peoples into Europe from the first inroad of the Huns to the conquests of the Osmanli Turks in the sixteenth century, it will be necessary to review briefly the events in central and eastern Asia which preceded and precipitated these incursions. From the time that the Irano–Aryan ancestors had arrived in Russian Turkestan in anticipation of their descent into the hills of northwestern India, much of this grassy plain had been the home of those Iranians who remained behind while their kinsmen climbed the mountains which would take them into India and the Irano–Afghan plateau. These Iranians apparently developed, or borrowed, a high degree of adaptation to their steppe environment, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When we view the Hunnish inroad into Europe in the light of the total context of Old World history, it ceases to be a strange inruption of hideous and invincible barbarians darting out of nowhere, as it at first appeared to the Byzantines and Romans. The Huns were a people who had been exposed to a high civilization that of China; they were cultured if illiterate, and in every sense the match of the frightened adversaries whom they met in Europe. When we examine the details of these invasions, we see that it was not one simple inroad, but a series of them in which a perplexing confusion of names is involved. Chief of the newcomers, after the Huns, were the Avars, who arrived in the sixth century. The Huns considered these their kinsmen and equals, and later amalgamated with them after the Avars had, in the eighth century, been defeated by Charlemagne and had retreated, some to Hungary and others to the Don country. From the fall of the Huns until the rise of the Mongols some thousand years later, the history of central Asia is simply a repetition of the same theme; some obscure sub–tribe would become important, win leadership over the others, and head new invasions of increasing complexity. The history of southern Russia became extremely complicated, for the steppes of the Don country served as a terminal point for all but the most serious of these movements. After the Avars came the Turks, called ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Hazen Class 17B Air Force Senior Noncommissioned Officers Academy 30 January 2017 Attila the Hun History has Attila, King of the Huns labeled as a barbaric savage that lacked refinement. The Huns had a powerful leader who used critical thinking to become one of the most powerful leaders of the time. He civilized the Huns and changed his people from a nomadic lifestyle that dated back 32 generations. He developed cities and gained territory for his people to settle in and established commerce for trade and sale of goods. In this paper I will go over the actions, decisions and behaviors that made Attila a visionary leader. Also we will review the ethical decision that made Attila ... His actions and behaviors united his people and instilled a shared vision of the future. He united tribes that all fought for a common purpose and stopped fighting themselves. He used ethical behavior in his mannerism and avoided pitfalls by not using silver platters as other kings would. Finally, I reflected on how I view myself as an ethical and visionary leader rooted in the same principles that Attila believed in. The King of the Huns inspired a nomadic people to become civilized and establish commerce based on his visionary and ethical leadership. • 4. Rome’s Forgotten Land Essay For more than 1,000 years the Romans conquered portions of Europe and brought a tremendous amount of influence to Eurasia. They built a network of roadways, amazing architectural achievements and order to the tribes they conquered throughout Eurasia. However the one area not influenced by the Romans was most of Germany, Russia, Yugoslavia and the Czech Republic, this area is also know as Germania. This region did not receive the benefits that the colonies conquered by Rome received simply because Rome, once it conquered a region, built cities in their communities, spreading Roman architecture language and transportation systems throughout the regions they overtook. The Germanic tribes that were in the region we now call Germania started out in the countries of Germany, Russia and northern Czech. The main tribes were the Goths, Vandals, Visigoths, theFranks and the Huns. A quote that talks about the Huns themselves from the Roman historian Ammianus, The nation of the Huns... surpasses all other Barbarians in wildness of life...though they have they all have strong limbs and plump necks; they are of great size, and low legged, so that you might fancy them two–legged beasts, or the fat figures that are carved in a rude manner with an axe at the posts at the end of bridges... (Ammianus, Rome and Her Enemies, page 288) The Huns and other Germanic tribes were the main reasons the Romans never occupied Germany for an extended period of time. The Germanic tribes were very spread out and culturally different. Many of these tribes were not native to Germany; some came from Scandinavia, like the Goths, who later branched off to become both the Goths and the Visigoths. Others traveled all the way from middle Asia like the Huns. Due to this wide expansion many of the original tribes like the Ulmerugi who were forced out by the Goths and even the Goths themselves when the Huns entered the area. Attila's military success will be explained through his ability to lure the Romans into war on a pretext whenever the Romans were vulnerable. His motives behind each war was to abstract as much money from the Romans as possible. Also to be explored will be his ability to assert psychological domination over the Eastern Emperor at a time when the two Empires were at peace. Furthermore to be examined will be his ability to portray himself as diplomatic through treaties and embassy consultations between the Romans and the Huns. Nevertheless the Huns ransacked and pillaged the Balkans taking fortified cities along the way such as Viminacium, Illyricum and defeated the Roman army at Chersonese. According to Brian Croke, In 441 the Huns invaded Illyricum only and in 442 broke into northern Thrace . The Romans sued for peace and the Treaty of Anatolius was agreed. Attila terms demanded that the annual tribute be tripled to 2,100 pounds of gold. He also compelled the Romans to surrender all Hun deserters and to ransom their own deserters at a rate of twelve solidi each. The treaty, however, contained one provision that had no precedent. Attila forced the Romans to make an immediate payment of 6,000 pounds of gold. Attila's plan to force a war to bring about higher subsidies had worked. • 6. The Khmer Rouge Tribunal: Difficulties The Khmer Rouge Tribunal: Difficulties By the time the Khmer Rouge regime was ousted from power in 1979, the United Nations Human Rights Commission had already received a 995–page report of testimonies on massive human rights violations in Democratic Kampuchea . The gravity of the crimes perpetrated was so great that the need for a judicial instance to render justice seemed evident. According to Francis Deron, the proposal for a Khmer Rouge Tribunal had significant historical importance as it was the first authentic trial of a communist regime. Never before had officials pertaining directly or indirectly to this type of ideology had to answer for their actions before impartial judges, but also, to their people and their contemporaries . However, the road leading up to its creation would prove to be long and arduous. From the very onset, the establishment of a high tribunal dedicated to trying Khmer Rouge officials faced numerous stumbling blocks. • 8. Who were the Huns, Ottomans, and the Austrians and how did... In Europe's early history there were many influential superpowers that contributed to the way Europe developed as a whole. Some of these powerful influences include the Huns, Ottomans, and Austrians. These three forces left their mark on Europe, once they were no more. Whether it is military tactics, or political ideas, without them Europe wouldn't be what it is today. So who really were the Huns, the Ottomans, and the Austrians? What made them so powerful that they influenced Europe's course in history as a whole? The earliest were the Huns, one of the most feared groups in all of history. They were nomads that used their unique war tactics to demolish any tribe or civilization in their way. . In Europe the Huns fought and defeated the German Goths of Eastern Europe, the Slavs, the Franks from France, and even the Roman Empire, plus and many others. The Huns settled in the area that is now called Hungary. They caused so much fear and chaos that even the rumor of one of their attacks would cause a community to travel elsewhere. They traveled westward out of China. They left a clear path, on their way to the west, of panic and devastation. It is even thought that the Great Wall of China was built as a precaution of a Hunnish attack. The reason they were so feared was their strong and cunning military forces. They were all skilled bowmen who rode on intimidating horses. This put all their enemies at a disadvantage, which proved successful for the Huns. Even though bows were ... Aetius was given the duty of relieving OrlГ©ans by Emperor Valentinian III. Bolstered by Frankish and Visigothic troops (under King Theodoric), Aetius ' own Roman army met the Huns at the Battle of the Catalaunian Plains also known as the Battle of ChГўlons. However, once the process began and outside forces were to move in, the regime refused to allow the Dutch and Pakistani forces into the area. The situation was made more stressful by the PDK 's refusal, as demobilization of the other two factions was at a lower rate than predicted, weakening the mission 's success. Hostage situations, ethnic murders, large scale drug smuggling, and an immigration law that targeted Vietnamese in the country are just some of the issues occurring in these 5 years. In June 1993 the Cambodia Constitution was adopted and signed, which established Sihanouk as now King and outlined a series of articles that aimed to address issues across the board. The articles protected free speech, human rights of the Khmer citizens, sovereignty of the nation, and economic policy among many other aspects. The anti–Vietnamese discrimination was rising in Cambodia, often expressed through hate speech or propaganda of people who blamed the Vietnamese for internal problems of the country. Examples Of Confucianism In The Movie Mulan Mulan, a tale of adventure and honor, is not only an engaging film to watch, but it also contains an amazing amount of historical accuracy concerning religions in China. The film Mulan is historically accurate in its portrayal of Daoist ideas, the expected behavior of women according to Confucianism, and Confucian relationships. First of all, the movie Mulan is historically accurate in its portrayal of Daoist thoughts. One of the main Daoist thoughts is that nature's function is better than constructs or actions taken by humans. This is well represented when Mulan faces an army of Huns at the alps. In this philosophy, relationships that people share with others are considered to be extremely important. The relationship between a father and a son is a significant hierarchical relationship, and in this kind of relationship the sons must treat their fathers with immense respect. This type of relationship is best exemplified in the scene where Shang mourns his dead father's loss with a small shrine with his father's helmet. It's a respectful and thoughtful way that a son would react to his parent's death, and the importance of the father–son relationship is really emphasized in this scene. Another important relationship in Confucianism is the one shared between a ruler and his subjects. The subject's responsibility is to follow that of the ruler, and the ruler's is to take care of his subjects. This relationship is shown in the second scene of the film, when Shang's father and the emperor discuss the possible ways to handle the Hun invasion. Instead of sending his troops to protect his own palace, as suggested by Shang's father, the emperor commands him to send the troops to protect the people of China. This action shows that the emperor regards the ruler–subject relationship as important by fulfilling his obligation to take care of his subjects. Introduction Attila, also known as Attila the Hun (b.?– d. 453 CE), was arguably the greatest ever Hunnic leader who devastated the Roman Empire, particularly in the West, and was one of the primary contributors to its downfall. There has been extensive debate about where Attila's people, theHuns, actually came from. Although there is a lack of evidence on the origins of the Huns, the two main theories are that they either: originated from somewhere around Kazakhstan and central Asia; or that they are descendants of the ancient Xiongnu people, thought to be from the north of China. The Romans generally thought lowly of Attila and his people, with the exception being Priscus, a Roman diplomat and writer born in Greece. The Huns are routinely depicted as savages, especially by ancient writers such as Ammianus Marcellinus (4th century CE) and Jordanes (6th century CE). However, Priscus of Panium (5th century CE) describes them in a better light. He actually met Attila, dined with him, and stayed in the Hun settlement. His description of Attila somewhat gives us the impression of a humble and generous man as opposed to a vicious warlord, In stark contrast to Priscus, the impact Attila had on Rome is apparent by the fact that Roman writers and people considered him to be a ruthless murderer hell–bent on destroying their beloved Empire. Christopher Kelly reinforces this view in his book, writing These exaggerated views of Attila and his people by the Romans comes as a sharp reminder to not make a final assessment of the Huns. From a small group of barbaric warriors to one of the most powerful kingdoms in the 5th century, the Huns devastated everything they attacked. But the question remains, how did they do it? The Huns were so successful in conquering Europe and Asia because of their great leader, unique fighting style, and the fear they struck into the hearts of their enemies. Even though some Huns used other weapons such as swords, whips, and spears, the Huns' preferred weapon was the bow and arrow. Few Huns wore armor because armor was something a higher ranked official would dress in. The combination of the bow with a skilled rider led to the Huns being a fierce attack force. Their favorite battle style was a battle fought far away from the enemy. They could be deadly with their bows from afar and then use their horses to keep the distance while still shooting. They were incredibly successful conquerors, and the Hunnic bow is an integral part of what made the Huns so successful. The expert craftsmanship and the perfected design allowed the Huns to produce the best bows in the world. The Huns lived in Eastern Europe and because they are nomads they did not have agriculture. The innovation was in how the Huns redesigned the bow. The Hunnic war bow was a compound bow which was "reflexed", meaning that when unstrung it would actually curve in the opposite way it was intended to be used. The process for making these bows is incredibly complex. First horn from the Hungarian Grey Steer was cut into strips and filed smooth. It was then submerged in boiling water and it slowly straightened as it softened (the softening was not permanent; it only persists while the horn was being boiled) in the water. The now–flat strips of horn were then filed down to their final thickness. A wood was selected for the core (of the bow limbs) and dried. The horn was then glued to the back of the wood and the limbs were glued to the handle. The ears (the part that curves backwards) were then carved (usually out of spruce because it is light and stiff) and glued to the end of the bow at roughly a forty–five degree angle. The bow was then backed with layers of sinews (often deer leg tendons). Sometimes the joints between the ears and the limbs and the limbs and the handle were also bound with hide. Then the seven bone plaques are cut into rough trapezoids to match the contours of the bow and glued into place. Then the process of tuning the bow begins. Each part of the bow is heated and slowly curved until the entire bow is uniform. All told it can take years to properly make and tune a Hunnic bow if you include the time to cure the wood, sinews, and glue. The two greatest differences between the Hunnic bow and other compound bows are the asymmetry of the arms and the bone stiffeners in the ears and handle. The bone plates are trapezoidal to better fit together along the contours of the bow, and they were deliberately scratched and roughened to ensure the glue would hold. Glue for these bows was often derived from the air bladder of a sturgeon although other glues could ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In her town, women must be ladylike and find a husband at an early age. Mulan is an independent girl who is tomboyish and clumsy; the opposite of what is expected of her. In Mulan's society being able to be the "perfect" woman and be pretty, smart, and graceful brings honor to one'sfamily, but Mulan cannot seem to fit these standards which makes her family disappointed. So the decision was made. Attila chose from the main host a few hundred men to accompany him to Rome. It was dangerous riding into the heart of the empire but with a smaller group travelling with him, it would be easier to avoid patrols and outposts.

  • 27. Pol Pot: Genocide In Cambodia The Communist Party of Kampuchea, also known as the Khmer Rouge, took control of Cambodia on April 17, 1975, which lasted until January 1979. For their three–year, eight–month, and twenty–one day rule of Cambodia, the Khmer Rouge committed some of the most heinous crimes in current history. The main leader who orchestrated these crimes was a man named Pol Pot. In 1962, Pol Pot had become the coordinator of the Cambodian Communist Party. The Prince ofCambodia, Norodom Sihanouk, did not approve of the Party and forced Pol Pot to flee to exile in the jungle. There, Pol formed a fortified resistance movement, which became known as the Khmer Rouge, and pursued a guerrilla war against Sihanouk's government. As Pol Pot began to accumulate power, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On January 7, 1979, Phnom Penh fell and Pol Pot was deposed. These events were later to be known as the Cambodian Genocide. Ever since the actions in Cambodia occurred, it has been debated whether it was an actual genocide. The general definition of genocide is the purposeful and methodical execution of a national, racial, political, or cultural group. The Khmer Rouge in Cambodia demonstrated that a government can be guilty of genocide against its own nation. The radical communist party led by Pol Pot took over Cambodia from 1975 to 1979. After 1979, the Khmer Rouge left a traumatized Cambodian culture that continues to undergo the repercussions of the genocide. People over the age of forty in Cambodia have stories to tell of fear, cruelty, hunger and the loss of family members. However, the Cambodian government is not making an effort to recognize the negative occurrences that have posed itself in the history of their culture. After the Pol Pot invasion ended and Cambodian began to heal from its past, Prime Minister Hun Sen came into power. He conducted a socialist–democratic government in Cambodia from 1989 to 1993. During his time in office, he offered the remaining Khmer Rouge exemption from persecution, given that they make a public request for forgiveness and agreed to vow commitment to his government (Brunner, Borgna "The Khmer Rouge"). • 28. Barbaric Nomads Analysis There are many ancient sources stating that the Huns themselves were barbaric nomads. Ammianus Marcellinus, a Roman writer states in the History of Rome, that "The nation of the Huns surpasses all other barbarians in wildness of life... They fight in no regular order of battle... It must be owned that they are the most terrible of warriors because they fight at a distance with missile weapons having sharpened bones admirably fastened to the shaft. When in close combat with swords, they fight without regard to their own safety" . Marcellinus sees how the Huns fighting style is completely different to that of the Romans and therefore finds it to be extremely terrible. Furthermore, Attila refused to be seduced by wealth as Priscus explains how "Attila ate nothing but meat on a wooden trencher... his cup was of wood, while to the guests were given goblets of gold and silver. His dress, too, was quite simple, affecting only to be clean. The sword he carried at his side, the latchets of his Scythian shoes, and the bridle of his horse were not adorned, like those of the other Scythians, with gold or gems or anything costly" . Both of these accounts document how humble Attila could be, Huns valued gold, and would often brag about their wealth, but, as these two accounts document, Attila acted modestly about his wealth. • 30. The Rise Of The Roman Empire In 448 AD, Greek writer and historian Priscus journeyed from Constantinople to meet with Attila the Hun. Pricus wrote down the events of his journey, leaving one of the few first–hand accounts of a diplomatic meeting with the Huns. His writings can tell us much about how the Huns interacted with other cultures and societies and how Attila–specifically–welcomed his guests to his court. Europe, in the 5th century, was undergoing many societal changes. Many of these changes were associated with the introduction of new barbarian tribes–barbarian is derived from the Greek word babblers meaning anyone who did not speak Greek. During the decline of the Roman Empire, many barbaric tribes took the opportunity to attack. The migration of barbarians closer to Rome put stress on an already stressed Roman government. The increased tension eventually lead to an outbreak of wars. In 410 Rome was sacked by the Visigoths–lead by Alaric–and was attacked again in 455 but the Vandals("Dining With Attila the Hun, 448"). Attacks on the Roman Empire by the Huns did not start until the middle of the 5th century. The Huns crossed the Danube in 441, upon crossing they sacked the city of Margus ("Late Roman Timeline"). The Huns–in 442– cross the Danube again this time sacking more cities than they had the previous year. The Roman government began to grow fearful of the army Attila had established under his rule. He and his brother, Bleda, were crowned as rulers of the Huns in 434 AD. It is widely believed that Attila ordered his brother's assassination in 445, so as to assume full control over the fearsome Hunnic Army. Do they deserve this reputation or a case can be made in defense of one or all of these leaders? Attila the Hun Attila the Hun and his brother Bleda became "joint leader" of the empire after their father Mundzuk was supposedly killed by his brother, who took over the empire but was exiled because they thought him the killer of Mundzuk. Hun Sen wields violence and intimidation to keep his people from rising up against him. Foreign aid causes an imbalance between revenue and expenses, because it allows government officials, no matter the debt, to spend far more than national revenues. Foreign aid is higher than the tax base of the country. This creates an environment where the government is not held accountable by the people. Higher ranking officials see corruption as a way of life, and refuse to change because they do not know any other way of living. Mulan Hayden Ikerd Mr. Wheeler AP Literature 12 April, 2013 Thomas Foster's Themes Traced in Mulan In his book How to Read Literature Like a Professor, Thomas Foster explains many reoccurring themes in literature, and shows how to recognize them and in some instances shows certain works where they occur. By reading this guide to literature, one may gain a deeper understanding of the work itself and of the author's intent in writing it. However, Foster's methods can also be applied to films. A film that contains many of the various themes, models, symbolism, and devices discussed in his book is Walt Disney's Mulan. Mulan is a character type with which people are familiar. Foster discusses this process of association in the chapter "Now ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After Mulan has failed in her encounter with the matchmaker, she goes home and begins singing the marvelous, gripping song called "Reflection". She asks, "When will my reflection show who I am inside?" She realizes that her fair appearance does not reflect her feelings. Singing this song, she washes away her makeup, and gives up on becoming the perfect daughter and bride; it is a baptism. Maybe it would be key to mention that during this song, Mulan sings in a downpour of rain. Just like Foster describes in his book, Mulan is 'baptized' in the rain. Disney movies are not notorious for their violent nature. So, when something violent occurs in a Disney movie, or an individual (or animal in many cases) dies, it must carry some kind of importance. In the chapter of his book "More Than It's Gonna Hurt You", Fosters says that there is usually more to violence than just violence. When Mulan is struck by the sword of Shan Yu, many more things happen to her than a fatal wound. She almost meets her demise, and for the first time, the reality of war sets in. Mulan realizes that she is not invincible and grasps the perils of war for the first time. When she receives medical attention for her wound, she is discovered to be a woman. • 36. The Causes Of The Khmer Rouge The Khmer Rouge carried out one of the most horrific genocides in the twentieth century. The nation of Cambodia was in a near–decade civil war between the Communist (Khmer Rouge) and the monarchy and then the Khmer Republic. The Khmer Rouge won the civil war and controlled all of Cambodia from 1975 to 1979. During this time, they committed horrific crimes against their own people. This genocidal regime was one of the worst events in the later years of the 1900s, and it is not well talked about in schools. The Khmer Rouge movement started back in the 1940s when Cambodia was fighting for freedom from the French government. Over the years, the Northern Vietnamese influenced much of the group's practices and beliefs. They gained so much members during the Lon Nol era because many Cambodian people lost family from the American bombings (whom Lon Nol was allied with). Through fear and threats, the Khmer Rouge scared the people into moving into the countryside. They abolished all things that have to do with capitalism. They brainwashed people into starving the population, torturing the "accused", and murdering any who oppose the Khmer Rouge way of life and leadership. This led to widespread poverty of Cambodia, and the people learned to love and respect everyone because of the hate shown to them during this horrific event. Many, til this day, still do not share their stories of what happened during this time because they are scared to be reminded of what was committed against them. That is why the country is still corrupt today because the two–decade old prime minister Hun Sen was an ex–Khmer Rouge Soldier. The Khmer Rouge group was created in the 1940s, but it was during the Vietnam War that the KR gained more power and became more prominent. The Khmer Rouge is an off–shot from the North Vietnamese government and essentially was funded by their government. The Vietnamese helped to make the KR a real political party in the Cambodian political system. • 37. Portrayal Of ' Attila ' Portrayal of Attila As we know, being a leader requires being influential or being a charisma, whether its in a positive or a negative way. Though, scrolling through the pages of history, we sometimes see the portrayal of leading figures that have been depicted differently in numerous descriptions. When it comes to one of the most dreading military leaders throughout history, Attila, who unified and ruled over the the barbaric nomadic called the Huns. Many accounts depicted such leader in different or similar horizons but with numerous approaches and backgrounds. Prosper, a Christian reporter; Jordanes, an official in the Roman government; a Greek writer known as Priscus; lastly Ammianus Marcilinus together a Roman soldier and historian all depicted the leader, who would later be granted with the name "Scourge of God", depending on their perspectives and the way they were treated. If we look and evaluate the accounts on Attila, there are differences and similarities. However, they are not entirely opposite; in fact, they share some definite commonalities. The most obvious similarity that we can easily tell about the accounts is that their authors arose inside the Roman empire. Also, they all want to focus solely on the facts about the leader not other unnecessary information. Mulan has your classic characters, the hero, the evil villain, but Mulan also pays homage and respect to the sacred spirits of her people. In this paper I will discuss Mulan's story of courage, prayer, and determination. I will cover some important symbolism, imagery, and messages found within the film. I will also identify good and evil characters in the film and their respective roles in the movie. Mulan The story of Mulan was inspired by an ancient Chinese ballad from the Song Dynasty, called the Ballad of Mulan (ancientstandard.com). In the movie Mulan's homeland is being attacked by The Huns. Everyone is here village is afraid and begins to gearing up for an imminent war. Every family is required to provide a member from their respective families to help defend themselves against the invading Huns. Mulan's father is the only male in her family and decides he must fight and defend his village against their approaching enemy. The problem is he is old and has previous war wounds that makes his chances of surviving such a war is unlikely. Recently rejected by her matchmaker and potential husband Mulan decides to disguise herself as a male and represent her family in her father's place. This decision leads Mulan on an uncertain and dangerous journey that teaches her and the movie viewers many valuable lessons. The Sacred Before Mulan heads to war she prays to her deceased ancestors for protection on her journey. The term used for praying to ancestors is called ancestor veneration (religionfacts.com). Prayers to ancestors is based on the belief that family members who have died have an interest in present life. These ancestors possess the ability to influence what happens in the lives of their family members still on earth. Mulan and her family seek the guidance from their ancestors throughout the movie.
