1. Angela McAndrew CV April 2016
Personal Statement
My adult life, since graduating, has been dedicated to challenging social exclusion and
disadvantage, initially through community work and since qualifying as a social worker 30 years
ago, I have done so in the field of statutory adult social care. In my work as a front line practitioner
and then as a leader of front line practitioners, I seek to assist people to achieve positive change.
This means helping staff to be the best they can too.
Social work requires a strong head, hence my attention to learning and development and intellectual
rigour. It also requires a strong heart which is why I emphasise building resilience in my self and
my teams: challenging social exclusion, labelling and infringements of human rights against the
least powerful in our community takes courage. It also requires skills and a tool box of
interventions, hence my endorsement adult attachment informed practice and solution focussed and
strengths based approaches.
I have a store of knowledge and experience to draw on and share and yet I feel constantly aware of
the need to keep learning, especially from colleagues. Last year I took the opportunity to work with
two new service user groups to broaden my scope of practice. Thus I feel flexible in facing new
challenges, but I have also valued continuity and the benefits this brings to the service and the
public. My career has spanned 3 local authorities in two metropolitan cities and within each I have
had sought diverse work settings. I have managed teams of all sizes and continue to work at a range
of levels as the job demands: strategic, project based, operational and hands on direct practice, the
latter even more so since qualifying as a BIA.
