Cox et al. in 2006 (Cox, 2006) concluded that the perception of crowding in passenger rail is created from an "interplay of cognitive, social and
environmental factors, whereas density refers to objective physical characteristics of the situation." Similarly, there is enough literature available that
establishes the fact that crowding is not just dependent on physical density but also on various physical antecedents, interpersonal factors, individual
characteristics and modifiers (Sundstorm, 1978). Culture also plays a role in the perception or tolerance of crowding. Evans et al. (2000) found that
residential crowding has a negative effect in terms of psychological distress across different cultures; Mexican Americans and Vietnamese... Show more

(6) Risk (safety and public health), which is strongly related to the perceived cleanliness of the carriage environment, especially the holds and the seat
coverings. (7) Emotion–the perception and tolerance of crowding is influenced by a passenger's emotions prior to embarkation. (8) Behaviour of
fellow passengers (e.g., loud phone conversations, the odor of unclean passengers, noisy school children, and a general lack of etiquette), which would
also exaggerate crowding." (Zheng Li, 2013).
"With regard to the subjective dimension of crowding, two measures are used to capture it in the literature. (i) How crowded people feel, and (ii) how
crowded people rate sitting Factor analysis suggested that two crowding measures are conceptually different, where the feel crowd item (i.e., how
crowded people feel) is associated with perceived density, constraint, distraction, and stress, while the environmental rating item (i.e., how crowded
people rate seating) is loaded only with perceived density. The former is more sensitive to changes in physical density than the latter" (Zheng Li, 2013).
(Mahudin, 2012), developed a 3 scale instrument where rail users in UK were asked the following questions – (1) Evaluation of the psychosocial
aspects of the crowded situation–"How crowded is the train that you are on today?"
(2) Affective reactions to the crowded situation–"How do you feel inside the train that you commute on today?"

The Uncanny Valley And Visual Expertise
Introduction The uncanny valley is a phenomenon that occurs when we see human–like beings and we notice that they have or are missing some
human features. The realization that they are missing human features causes negative feelings of unease. In this paper I will first describe the uncanny
valley. MacDorman & Cattopadhyay (2016) provide an interesting explanation as to why it can occur and how the effect can be influenced.
MacDorman & Cattopadhyay (2016) suggests that eeriness of the uncanny valley is not because of how eerie they look. Rather, it depends on how
human–like they are. Then, I will describe visual expertise. Visual expertise in this sense refers to our ability to identify faces and other objects that we
have experience in perceiving. That experience is used to make top–down assumptions about what faces and their features should look like. Harel
(2016) looks at visual expertise, where it works, and how it works. Lastly, I will describe the relationship between the uncanny valley and visual
expertise. Kätsyri, Förger, Mäkäräinen, & Takala (2015) provide an argument in their surveying that can explain the relationship. They suggest
that a possible explanation is that the visual expertise that we have with facial recognition perceives featural differences in an artificial human–like face.
The difference elicit that eerie response because we see something that does look human–like, but we identify as not being human.

Analysis Of Richard Cory By Paul Simon
Perception Kills In society today often times individual's perceptions of materialistic objects equate success and are held at a higher standard versus
appreciating health and happiness. This stands true in a timeless poem written by Paul Simon, "Richard Cory". This poem chronicles the life of a
man who appears to have everything and is envied by outsiders looking in. Richard Cory is a man who, regardless of his outwards life appearance,
having obtained all that individuals view as successful he eventually is found committing suicide. Simon is successful in portraying such a common
misconception in a creative and nuanced way. Simon's comparison of the upper class versus the lower class gives the reader an inside look at how
deceitful perceptions can truly be. Common bystanders looking into Richard Cory's life were constantly infatuated and envious, although it was
slightly a facade and superficial. Simon uses tone, symbolism, and allusions, to argue the crippling effects of placing assumptions and helping readers
appreciate life for its simplicity.
The quote "You can never tell a book by its cover" stands true to illustrate Simon's ironic tone throughout the poem. Simon spends most of the poem
indicating how many people wanted to be like "Richard Cory". They envied his manners, his wealth and his status. Everyone wished that we were in
his place. Then suddenly, in the last line, we discover Cory has killed himself. This is the ultimate irony. Obviously, Cory was terribly

Matrix Essay
Epistemology is the nature of knowledge. Knowledge is important when considering what is reality and what is deception. The movie "The Matrix"
displays a social deception in which Neo, the main character, is caught between what he thought was once reality and a whole new world that controls
everything he thought was real. If I were Neo, I would not truly be able to know that I was in the matrix. However, it is rational to believe that I am in
the matrix and will eventually enter back into my reality later. The proof that that I can know that I am in the matrix and that I will return to reality
comes from the responses of foundationalism, idealism, and pallibalism.

Once you know what you are sure of, you can build up knowledge from there. Many wonder how we can wonder we are not dreaming. Some agree
that you cannot feel pain in a dream, but others say they have. The argument that dreams are not related to memory is strong because most people do
not remember their dreams. Descartes explains that in a dream you can feel as if you are using all of your senses, but they seem to be more vague
than when awake. Descartes struggles with the dream issue until he comes upon his conclusion. "'I now notice that there is a vast difference between
[being asleep and being awake], in that dreams are never linked by memory with all the other actions of life as waking experiences are. ... But when I
distinctly see where things come from and where and when they come to me, and when I can connect my perceptions of them with the whole of the
rest of my life without a break, then I am quite certain that when I encounter these things I am not asleep but awake. (Med. 6, AT 7:89–90)' (Lex,
Newman)" This dream argument attributes to how we can know anything. For Neo's sake it helps him decide weather he is really in the matrix or not.
In addition to foundationalism proving that knowledge is built up from what we are certain of, idealism plays an important role of arguing that all
reality is in the mind. Descartes' argument for idealism explains how knowledge of reality is possible. He goes through the process of using an

The Sapir And Whorf Theory: How Language Influences Our...
Language is an organized and uniform method of conveying information. In order for something to be considered "language" it must be intended.
Language must also be part of a structured system. For example, with the English language, there are rules regarding grammatical structure. Moreover,
language must be creative and open–ended allowing it to be relevant to a specific situation or time period. Because different types of language are
widely used, one can assume the language influences our thoughts and perceptions of the world to a great extent. As the strong version of the Sapir
and Whorf theory suggests, language serves as a mold in which our thoughts are categorized. These thoughts and perceptions allow one to create
opinions on the information given based on his knowledge and ability to process the it. In an experiment done by BBC, psychologist Jules Davidoff

than we do. Moreover, in the Dove beauty experiment, woman #1 perceives herself differently compared to how woman #2 perceives her. This is not
only shown through the descriptive language they use, but also, the visual representations of the artist as he uses the descriptions to draw an image.

Positive Perspectives As A Positive Perspective
Perspective refers to a point of view that involves certain assumptions. On the other hand, perception can be defined as our recognition and
interpretation of sensory information. It is the lens through which we view reality. Just like the examples I showed before, there is no fixed meaning
to anything because you can always look at something in a different way and interpret different meanings. Things in themselves are inherently neutral,
it is the way we perceive them that changes its meaning. For instance, your day can be awful or great depending on your perspective. Or you could
view a bad mark in the test as a failure or an opportunity to develop self–resilience. The thing is, there is no right or wrong way to perceive something.
However, having a positive perspective can improve your perception towards life.
2 years ago, my family and I made one of the biggest decision of our lives. We packed our bags and bid farewell to our homeland, Singapore. 7 hours
later, we arrived in Adelaide where we now call home. That decision was one of the hardest decision I had to make. At that time, I was College
Captain of my school and part of my school's netball team. Migrating to Adelaide would mean that not only do I have to give up my hard–earned
position in the netball team, I would also be unable to compete in the prestigious national netball competition. Ultimately, I decided to move together

Analysis Of Kate Chopin 's A Respectable Woman

Many things one does or does not do in life are based on perception; our perception of someone, their perception of us, and even our perception of
ourselves. John Moore says, "your opinion is your opinion, your perception is your perception–do not confuse them with "facts" or "truth." Wars have
been fought and millions have been killed because of the inability of men to understand the idea that everybody has a different viewpoint
(Quotations for Martial Artists, John Moore, p 1)." In Kate Chopin 's A Respectable Woman, perception is a major theme; for example, Mrs.
Baroda 's perception of her husband's friend, Gouvernail, shifts drastically throughout the short story. Chopin's main theme of perception is
displayed well because of her use of literary devices such as imagery, setting and dialogue; through these devices, Chopin reveals Mrs. Baroda's
feelings and thoughts, based on the way she perceives Gouvernail before, during and after meeting him for the first time; this paper will discuss the
literary devices and how Kate Chopin uses them to portray themes of freedom, identity, desire, as well as perception. In the beginning of the story,
Chopin uses description in order to form Mrs. Baroda's initial perception of Gouvernail when she finds out her husband had invited him to spend a
few weeks on their plantation; Mrs. Baroda was less than pleased to discover his arrival. Mrs. Baroda

Perception Of Reality In The Allegory Of The Cave
The issue in the philosophy of perception is explaining how perception could give someone either knowledge or a justified belief about the world.
We recognize this reality to be something which we cannot change in any way. However, it can not be said about the perception of reality being
completely true. The strange thing of all this is that reality may not actually exist. The reason we all think in one reality is that we only see our
central point of the story. Just because someone sees something in a specific way does not make it so. This problem has been viewed in terms of a
skeptical argument that appears to show that such knowledge and premise are impossible. Although I agree thatperception of life may or may not be

Plato has also inquired about our perception. He states that there are two kinds of perception: sensory perception and spiritual perception. Sensory
perception is the world of aspect, in which we perceive, with the support of our sensory organs. For this reason, the world is the world of illusion. It
is the world of "shadows" so in Plato's view, it is the world of falsification. The reality or truth is impossible to perceive through our senses. This
extensive metaphor symbolizes how we humans have the ability to seek for philosophical knowledge or the light, but one will never experience the
Truth, the sun, for the reason that it is what causes blindness for possessing too much knowledge. Although, experiencing the Truth can be achieved
through spiritual perception, which is divine understanding. Spiritual enlightenment is unique for each individual, but there are some recognizable
signs. First, one stops both suffering and struggling, which are also products of the mind. You will actually have trouble relating to how you used to
manage to suffer, and emotions become valued messengers rather than problems. Spiritual perception can be possible when we reject the world of
sensory perception, so until and unless we break all the material chains, we will not have spiritual perception. It is the exemplary philosophy of Plato
and his spiritual perception as an ideal

An Ant's Tale: There and Back Again ( via Path Integration)
The studies of navigation functioning is of great interest in psychology. Forms of navigation can tell us a great deal about the inner workings of the
mind. Also, it eplains how sensory systems across a great number of creatures present. Many of these are non– representational and non–perceptual.
The foraging desert ant, for example, sets out from the nest looking for food. Initially, it chooses no specific path on its quest. It leaves the nest, then
proceeds to seemingly random turns in search of its food. Upon finding what it is looking for, it doesn't retrace its steps back to the nest. The desert
ant will make a near–straight line path to its home. This has been tested by way of experimental manipulation of the ant's outbound path (Muller). It ran
the ant through both 2–leg/turn paths and 3–leg/turn paths, and the results were the same. The return path was then measured for accuracy and
directness. Through a process called path integration, the ant calculates the most direct route back home. Path integration is the computation of
distance and directional data in order to chart a vector. In this example, the ant does not use beacons or landmarks to find its way home. It makes a
calculation of various stimuli and is able to calculate the necessary path. For example, the ant uses the proximal stimuli of torque stress on its joints.
Path integration is considered a "computational transformation that yields an informational vector, constituted by a distance and a

Is Man The Measure Of All?
Barrett Kitterman
Philosophy 3001
Paper 2, Question 1
Is Man the Measure of All?
What does Protagoras mean when he states that "Man is the measure of all things," and why does Plato reject such a notion? Before we answer these
questions, we must first ask ourselves, what is reality? Does the world have a reality independent of the one you and I perceive? Are qualities such as
right and wrong, correct and incorrect entirely subjective? Or are they objective properties of people, places, and things? The answers to these
questions are what's at stake for both Protagoras and Plato, and both offer significantly different perspectives. We will analyze what Protagoras proffers
about the nature of reality, touching upon the Measure Doctrine, his conception ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
What does he mean when he states that "...a human being is the measure of all things–of things that are, how they are, and of things that are not, how
they are not"? (Irwin, p. 97, box 158). By "things," Protagoras is referring to the properties of people, places, objects, and processes in the universe,
and perhaps even referring to the people, places, objects, and processes themselves; we will examine the implications of both interpretations. By
calling humans "measure[s]," Protagoras means our perceptions dictate how people, places, objects, processes, and their properties seem to us. That
is, "things that are, [and] how they are" are relative to individuals' unique perceptions of those things; the things and their qualities, in and of
themselves, do not exist. Take temperature, or hotness, as an example of a thing (or a property of one); in Protagoras' view, there is no objective or
universal hotness, rather, there is only the perception of hotness. Moreover, the perception of hotness may vary, or be unique to every individual
perceiver. Let's be concrete by considering the temperature of a hypothetical cup of coffee. A cup of coffee that I perceive to be hot may not feel hot

Theories And Evidence On Face Recognition
"Do new–borns have the ability to detect faces? Discuss with reference to theories and evidence on face recognition in infancy".
In order to understand reality, a series of processes and interpretations are necessary to make sense of the world to any individual. Not only
interpretation but also the arrangement of information received from our senses is a must to create inside representations of the external world.
This essay seeks to explore if new–borns can detect faces, pointing out theory's strengths and weaknesses, consequently discussing previous research in
order to expose evidence of babies face's 'recognition' abilities. This said, according to Macknik and Martinez–Conde (2014), "Most of what we see is a
confabulation of our brain: it makes stuff up based on the sparse data it gets from our eyes".
In other words, individuals do not perceive reality but in what manner their brain understands it.
In the early 1900s, Gestalt psychologists (such as Wertheimer), tried to explain the ideologies behind the understanding of sensations received in a
sensory manner (Gross, 2015). Their main argument was that every individual is born able to perceive the world in specific ways, with no or little
learning; that to make sense of reality, individuals had to perceive objects as being separated from other stimuli (seen as a whole) and once a
differentiation between the figure and the ground was made, it then became possible to organise the

Nelson on Descartes's Theory of Perception and Judgment
Nelson on Descartes?s Theory of Perception and Judgment
ABSTRACT: One tension in Descartes?s account of human error stems from the idea that we may be faulted for our acts of will, despite the fact that
God is our omnipotent and omniscient creator. In the present essay, I describe a second tension in Descartes?s account ofhuman error. After describing
the tension, I consider Alan Nelson?s characterization of the means by which Descartes?s intended to relieve it. Although Nelson's interpretation is
almost correct, I think that it obscures some of the interesting details of Descartes?s theory of perception and judgment. These details are revealed by
the taxonomy of sensory responses that Descartes articulates in the Sixth Set of Replies ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In cases of false perceptual judgment, is it not the faculty of intellect that so seductively offers up false propositions whose subject matter so clearly
concerns our environs? As Descartes himself concedes, the objects of perception include the ideas of size, shape, and motion, and of other properties
that are referred to objects outside of the mind.2 If the will and intellect, respectively, contribute the neustic and phrastic components of judgment, then
it appears that the intellect (and hence God) is blameworthy in cases of erroneous perceptual judgment.
II.
In his paper, Descartes?s Ontology of Thought, Alan Nelson attempts to give an interpretation of Descartes?s theory of perception and judgment that
extricates Descartes from the tension associated with explaining human error.3 On Nelson?s interpretation, Descartes maintained that false perceptual
judgments are ultimately the result of confused ideas, which have their origin in past determinations of the will. In turn, Nelson supposes that confused
sensory ideas can subsequently come to be the customary result of the impact of external objects, and thereby result in the spontaneous dispensing of
false propositions by the intellect.
Nelson?s interpretation has a lot going for it. First, it appears to relieve the apparent tension in Descartes?s account of error. Indeed, by characterizing
false perceptual judgment as the result of confused ideas and tracing the source

experiences of values or evaluative properties. In her book, Tappolet uses each chapter to explain components of existing theories of emotion she

Sensory experience is the physical process during which our sensory organs respond to external stimuli, while perceptual experience is the
psychological process in which you make sense of the stimuli. Perceptual experience includes how we interpret and internalize a sensory experience.

evaluating an example of a timeless pre–school lesson and life–long relevant principle: it's not what you say, it's how you say it.

Problem Statement
B&D has a strong market share in the consumer and industrial markets, but is weak in the P–T market as it is currently experiencing decreased
market share. In this segment, B&D is not generating profits and, at the same time, retailers want more advertising allowances and rebates.

manufacturers use higher color differentiation and use colors such as teal (Makita), red (Milwaukee), or green (Hitachi) to differentiate the P–T
products from the black/charcoal grey consumer products.
Research on Tradesmen's brand perceptions shows that DeWalt, a B&D brand associated with "industrial yellow" has a 70% awareness rating
and is ranked by 63% of those in the P–T market to be "One of the Best", which is much more than the 44% of people in this market who think the

Examples Of Idealism In Frankenstein
Initially, the creature has a mind that revolves around idealistic perceptions. These perceptions came into the picture due to the creatures encounters
with humanity. Victor Frankenstein for example, abandoned the monster at birth, consequently leading to the creature's inevitable distress: "But
where were my friends and relations? No father had watched my infant days, no mother had blessed me with the smiles and caresses;...All my past
life was now a blot, a blind vacancy in which I distinguished nothing" (101). This feeling of distress was accompanied by the monster's longing for a
family or companion. This sense of loneliness sparked by Victor's immoral actions is what led to the monster's first idealisticperception. A perception
that regarded the belief that he could mutually and happily coexist with other humans. A symbolic representation of this is exact idea is the monsters
second encounter with humanity, an encounter which occurs after the monster has had time to ponder and fantasize about his idealistic perceptions.
Confidently and proudly, the monster enters a village full of humans: "But I had hardly placed my foot within the door before the children shrieked.
And one of the women fainted."(74) expecting his idealistic belief to be the truth he was once again disappointed and so he creature's idealistic beliefs
are questioned. Despite this heartbreaking encounter with humanity, the monster's idealistic perceptions and beliefs only increase further. He alters his

Expectations Drive Perceptions By Annie Dillard
Expectations Drive Perceptions Annie Dillard, in her essay, "Seeing," describes how each individual sees and perceives differently. Dillard explains
how a certain individual may see something completely different than another. Each and every individual perceives situations and views in their own
way, depending on their expectations, their backgrounds, their experiences, and their attitudes. When an individual expects to see something,
typically that is what they see. Because they are generally focused on seeing what they expect, the individual doesn't see or notice the small things
that are often important. One specific example of different perceptions is school. Students perceive school in various ways, depending on what they
expect. The thought or action of going to school is perceived in various ways, depending on an individual's expectations. Because they expect
opportunities and rewards to come out of school, some students perceive school as a wonderful place to be. To illustrate, Annie Dillard, in her essay,
"Seeing," explains how expectations affect how a person sees, "But if you cultivate a healthy poverty and simplicity, so that finding a penny will
literally make your day, then, since the world is in fact planted in pennies, you have with your poverty bought a lifetime of days" (Dillard 17). Dillard
means that if an individual expects the penny to contribute to their attitude or life, then it will. But, if an individual expects the penny to be worthless,
then it

John Locke's Limited Representationalism
March 12, 2017
A.
Do you ever wonder what life is? How we subsist as humans? What is the macrocosm in general? It's uncanny concept to cogitate, so many
explications are out there and we still don't have the answers we optate. John Locke, who wanted to test those questions was the first modern empiricist
we studied. His philosophies were deeply influential on us. Locke argued that, "the mind represents the external world, but does not duplicate it." (The
Potency of Conceptions, 2002). His argument makes you genuinely contemplate subsistence and makes you second guess your opinion on what you
cerebrate you wish to be true in life. His specific argument about limited ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The hypothesis Locke had was that matter itself, does exist. He utilized the term material substance, which subsists outside our minds and our
perceptions are caused due to this matter. (Prof. Stanley, 12). This hypothesis expounds why we cannot control our own sense data. They are caused
by material substances that do exist in our mind. His initial argument is that matter is real and is a component to the cause of our perceptions. Locke's
limited representationalism was that some properties of our sense data look homogeneous to properties of the matter that cause sense data. Locke also
verbally expressed that not all properties of our sense data look homogeneous to the properties of matter.
His conclusions, in reference to the ego–centric problem expresses that the subsistence of the material world cannot be proven with certainty that we
get by mathematics proofs. He verbalizes that this doesn 't designate that we cannot justify our notion in the material world. The justification for
erudition only requires, "reasonably high probability." (Prof. Stanley, 11). His colossal concern with finding the proof for the mind external world was
finding the best explanation. The conclusion to the best explanation would explicate the facts that offers the best possible explanation. His solicits
hypothesis was an endeavor that he made to point to specific set of facts that seem infeasible to answer. The facts about the claim shows

Perception & philosophical problems with Perception
First of all, let us know that what this "perception" is? In general, perception is the process by which we acquire the information about the world
around us and inside us, using our senses. For example If I feel that a red car is going by the road and a women is sitting on it, drinking coffee, then
first of all I should have sense that what is car, roads, red, coffee etc. These all perceptions require possession of concepts, but there exists another class
of perception that does not require any possession to perceive them. Let take example of a busy bus stand, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Two things always try to defend all the theory of relating perception and reality are illusion and hallucination. Many scenarios we have seen where
these two things are really making ourselves to scratch our heads. Let's look something on illusion. Illusion is nothing but distortion of our senses. It is
shared sometimes that illusion distort reality, but that is not the case, it is just a thought of some peoples. As we discussed above also that reality is
nothing but, a commonly experienced perception. Some illusions are due to the general assumptions made by our brain during perception. These
generalizations are made on a theory of human perception, which is called gestalt theory. But the major question comes to my mind is that why do I see
illusion or how any visual illusion is able to fool my

Romulus My Father + Related Texts
"As human beings, a feeling of belonging is vital to the well being and self esteem of the individual, but a lack of connection, or rejection can cause
instability and other negative repercussions"
Senses of belonging evolve from the connections made with entities such as people, places and communities. The feeling of connection or relation with
these entities is formed from the perception of oneself and the perception of these entities as shaped by historical cultural, social, and personal context.

District 9 also shows a strong use of vibrant landscape, particularly obvious in the use of contrast between the modern, clean, ordered landscape of
the MNU buildings and the desolate, junkyard, slum like ghetto of District 9 itself. This represents the psyche of the two groups, and the vastly
different cultures and contexts of the two races. It also shows the balance of power between them, and it's evident when the MNU conducts a raid into
District 9, where the clean uniforms and vehicles of the MNU, a contrast to the ramshackle buildings and filthy, ragged clothing of the 'prawns'. This
first glimpse into the Landscape of district 9 colours our perceptions of the prawns and their contexts. After the failed attempt to integrate them into
society due to a lack of understanding of individual ownership, and their vastly different culture, the MNU corrals them into District 9 and treat them
the prawns with contempt. This is a clear indication of their rejection of prawns into normal society, due to their differences in context, morals and
values. As the film progresses, the two groups are explored deeper, and the landscapes continue to influence understanding of the two groups, for
example, a short video is shown of the space ship the prawns used to arrive at earth. Inside, the city sized landscape appears hostile and dangerous. This
influences the audience's initial feelings towards the prawns.

Customer Personality And The Product Selection Process Essay
Market segmentation is a marketing tool that divides a large heterogeneous market into smaller homogeneous subsets of consumers with similar needs,
wants and characteristics. Researchers might be able to predict customer 's behavior by studying if there are any relations between customer 's
personality and the product selection process. A key success for any business is to communicate with its customers better than competitors by
understanding who its customers are and what they want. The more precisely costumers are segmented, the easier a business will understand its
customers and build successful relationship with them because customers usually choose a product that expresses their personality. The market can be
segmented by different types of segmentations such as demographic, geographic and psychographic. Marks & Spencer uses demographic segmentation
to target customers above the age of 30 with high income and executive occupation. It also segments the market through value, as many products in
M&S's clothing range have a premium–priced segment, a mid–priced segment and a lower price segment. Brand personality is a set of features and
human characteristics that is associated with the brand. As one of the most important promotion tools, it will attract the target audience 's attention. A
brand personality that is well defined will lead to customer trust, emotional attachment and loyalty. Better communications between a customer and

Examples Of The Ponzo Effect
The Ponzo Effect
Perceptions shape our world. We see the world through our eyes and we constantly create perceptions. Even though we usually think of our visual
perceptions as reality, yet they are not always as they are perceived. Moreover, we humans make perceptions that are quite psychologically and
neurologically constructed and powerfully driven and influenced by a number of factors. We make perceptions based on, for example, contextual
factors, on expectations, on our own individual and past experiences, and of course, what we happen to be paying attention to. But it is a fact that in
the fashion of how we see the world our perceptions oftentimes oddly do not correspond with what can be physically measured. Therefore, rather than

When approaching an airport for landing s/he actually will see the runway as being wider in front of her/him than at the far end. The same is true for
train drivers. They will perceive the Ponzo effect and see the parallel rails seem to come together in the distance.
The Ponzo effect illustrates quite well the idea that perception is not exactly an internal one–to–one copy of the outside world rather than it involves
perceptual interpretation. Instead, whenever we see parallel lines converging, we should be aware that the visual system makes a correction and we
likely do see lines not of equal length – even when, in fact, they are.
So, the bottom line is, our perceptions basically are neither true nor false – though we can think of our visual system as not absolutely neutral – our
perceptions evolved in order to be able to make rapid and effective decisions. To put it differently, it simply helped the human species and our stone
aged ancestors to survive (and it certainly always will). And yet we are faced with them nigh–on everywhere and at any time and they constantly form
our view of the world we live in and we have to deal with. Rather than taking them for face value, we instead need to be aware of the fact that the
things that we see are not always as we perceive and as they seem to be. Therefore, we are better off if we realise that they are nothing but our
unwittingly created interpretations and perceived notions. Eventually, that is just my personal perception of

Essay about The Effects of Negative Weight Perception
How people perceive their weight can have both positive and negative effects. Unfortunately it is more common to have negative effects. Maria
Miller (2014) explains in her article, "Rock More Confidence: Sexy is a state of mind. Allow us to explain.," that having a low self–image is
exceedingly damaging to oneself. It not only leads to weight gain but can also cause health problems. Others perceptions can also have a negative
effect on an individual's well being.
Perception can have a profound impact on a person's overall state of being. Miller (2014) explains that degrading oneself "can actually alter your

92) and "the sense of being marginalized because of one's weight can actually contribute to steeper health declines" (p. 81). These findings are
congruent with what Miller (2013) wrote. Similar to how Miller (2014) discussed that lowering the self–esteem of oneself can affect well–being;
Schafer and Ferraro (2011) explain how perceptions other people have of a person's weight can affect that person's health. Miller (2014) goes on to
explain, although it is not verified, how having negative perceptions of other's can lower one's self–esteem and conversely having positive perceptions
can raise both parties self–esteem. A facet of well being that is every so often affected by weight is mental health. Frisco, Houle, and Martin (2010)

The Two Most Important Social Roles Of A Mother And...
1.The two most important social roles that I play are the ones of a mother and a college student. I believe that because of my age and because I
play both of these roles combined, people have mixed perceptions of me. Some of those people are baffled, and some of those people actually
admire me because of it. These attitudes often come out in the same phrase: "I don't know how you do it." It is the tone in their voice and the look on
their face that gives me the impression of how they view me. However, the only people whose perceptions I take to heart are my particular others– my
daughter, my friends, and my family. 2.I definitely communicate differently in these roles, though there are similarities in each. I am very conscious
of how I want to come across to both my teachers and my daughter. I communicate professionally and politely with my professors out of respect and
the desire to be perceived as a dedicated and courteous student. I communicate respectfully with my daughter, but I am also an authoritative figure in
her life as well as a guide. When I communicate with her, I make sure my message is getting across by choosing my words more carefully. A
toddler's capacity to understand messages, meanings, and lessons is not as an adult's. I also make sure that I am not harsh when I reprimand her,
because harshness acts as noise when interacting with a child. I rather make sure she understands me and how her words and actions affect others. 3.I

Exploring the Differences Between Idealism and Representative Realism The two differences between idealism and representative realism are, realists
believe that objects properties such as smell and taste exist in the object but representative realists disagree and believe that these need to perceive to
exist. The second difference between idealism and representative realism is for idealists things only exist when perceived, whereas representative
realism means things exist if perceivable. Explain and illustrate how an idealist distinguishes between a real and hallucination experience A real
experience can be defined as something that actually happens in a conscious state, which your mind... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Idealists also like to use the idea that when you are in a normal experience and state your sense data will be perfectly normal, however when you
are in a hallucination experience your sense data becomes unpredictable and irregular. An example of this can be related to the words 'my guitar'
as the words are a convenient way of referring to a repeated pattern of sensory experiences. Despite this fact, the argument can be seen as flawed as
if you were in an hallucination it would be hard to know whether your sensory data is irregular. In conclusion idealists distinguish between real and
hallucination experiences in a variety of ways, the key reason was, by showing us how a real experience is connected to a past experience meaning
we can't be hallucinating. Access the view that only minds and ideas exist To access the view that only minds and ideas exist, we must look at what
the Idealists believe in relation to this. In this essay I hope to sum up the general ideas that only minds and ideas exist. Idealists have the viewpoint
that all experience we gain are of mental representations of the real thing. This means that nothing that we see is actually real, but simply something
that is manipulated by our minds to tell us it is a certain object. Idealists also believe that there is no external world as everything is unknowable; from
this we can learn that

3.1.1Brand Associations:
During research the author found out that perceived brand associations such as brand attitudes, brand image and perceived quality together considered
as brand associations may influence the perceptions of consumers towards brands. Further, Aaker in 1991 suggested that these brand associations are
the means through which consumers' memory towards a brand is developed. Aaker has studied these three concept's relations theoretically and

consumers' perceptions.

The Plausible Theory Of Perception Direct Realism Or...
Title
Which is the more plausible theory of perception Direct Realism or Indirect Realism?
Introduction
In this essay I will consider two common theories that attempt to account for the problem of perception, namely Direct, and Indirect realism. I will
outline several arguments against direct realism and show how the theory of indirect realism more plausably accounts for the problem of perception.
Objections to the arguments against direct realism will be considered and possible counterarguments given. This paper will consider two theories of
perception that attempt to account for this problem, namely Direct and Indirect realism, and argue against direct realism in favour of indirect realism,
leading to the conclusion that indirect realism is the more plausable of the two.
Background
The nature of perception, such as sight, touch, and smell appears intuitively straightforward; direct and immediate access to a mind–independent world
(naive realism). We feel as if we looking through our eyes, as if they are open windows to an external world, and when we feel the texture of objects
through haptic (touch) perception, it feels as if we are directly touching the external surface of a mind–independent objecting. Sitting on a couch it
intuitively feels as if one is looking at an object which exists independent of ones visual perception (e.g. the couch continues to look green and have a
soft texture even if one leaves the room). The problem of perception arises from the existence

The Difference Between Looking And Perception In Raymond...
What is the true difference between looking and perceiving? In "Cathedral", l Carver reveals human rediscovery through contrast in between
characters whose perception determines the narrator changes of mind. The narrator in "Cathedral" is modeled as an ignorant person who does not
seem to perceive the world with knowledge. Instead, he only has the ability to see the world with his sight in the beginning of the story. His limited
view to the world reveals his lack of human experience in life thus he usually attempts to perceive life with his stereotypical view. The other two
characters, including the wife and Robert, are both perceiving the world with numerous life experiences. They are the contrast to the narrator yet they
are helping the narrator to rediscover human worth through their ways of perceiving the world. Robert is especially the significant person that changes
the narrator mind by showing what he can do as a blind man. Raymond Carver contrasts the wife and Robert with narrator in many directions to bring
out the process of how the narrator changes from an ignorant person to a man who starts to know how to perceive the world with his mind but not the
eyes.
The contrast between the wife and the narrator is shown through their different attitude toward Robert's visit and also the lost of his wife. Robert is an
extremely important person for narrator's wife who suffers in her previous marriage and even commit suicide. The communication between the wife

Examples Of Irony In Good Country People
What is a "Good Country Person?" Who makes the decision in whether a person is good or not. Is there such thing as good person? When a person
thinks that they are always good, it probably means that they are are lying because no one person is perfect. Although there is no such thing as a
perfect person, often times people are sometimes perceived to be perfect or better than they really are. Perception is the ability to see, hear, or become
aware of something through the senses. In her article on the morality of perception, Gayman acknowledges, "Unlike mere recognition, perception
requires the work of the intelligence and demands careful observation and engaged attention" (1). Being able to perceive the character of a person is
necessary if a person wants to fully trust another person. In "Good Country People" by Flannery O'Connor, irony, symbolism, and characterization are
used to prove that one's perception of something or someone is not always reliable.
Irony is the expression of one's meaning by using language that usually means the opposite. Typically in literature, irony is used in emphatic sense.
There is a multitude of irony in "Good Country People." The character's names of this story are incredibly ironic. Joy–Hulga is ironic because she is
the furthest from being joyful. Another example is, Mrs. Freeman. She is not free because she has been hired and enslaved by Mrs. Hopewell.

As Lindsey Stirling's video continues, it becomes clear that the ballerina is tired and unhappy with this banal routine. An effective picture is painted of

George Berkeley Essay
George Berkeley was an Irish philosopher. His philosophical beliefs were centered on one main belief, the belief that perception is the basis for
existence. In doing so, he rejected the notion of a material world in favor of an immaterial world.
Berkeley felt that all we really know about an object we learn from our perception of that object. He recognized that in the materialist's view the real
object is independent of any perceiver's perception. The pen on my desk would exist, whether or not I was in the room to see it or have a sensory
experience of it in some way. Berkeley rejected this idea. He realized that knowledge is limited to perception. In this realization, he postulated that

What, then, happens to an object when no one can perceive it anymore? If no one sees the tree and no one has a sensory experience of it, does it
cease to exist? This idea suggests that objects pop in and out of reality when not being perceived by any human perceiver. Berkeley argues from an
immaterialist standpoint and says that objects do not act in such a manner. He tries to save his theory by saying that the tree does in fact exist because
God is the continuous perceiver of all things and therefore God always perceives the tree.
This is an illegitimate appeal to save his philosophy. By saving his theory in this manner he "shoots himself in the foot.'; If God cannot be perceived,
and if to be is to be perceived, then God cannot possibly exist. Although the existence of God can be inferred through the classical ontological
argument, doing so scuttles his immaterial world. If one can have knowledge through inference, then one can infer the existence of a material world.
Berkeley's answer to the existence of the tree in the quad is not convincing because his argument is circular. If something must be perceived in

This topic is important because it allows us to gauge people's perception and impressions of certain cues in the web environment. The research will help
researchers understand which cues communicate to people better in the Internet environment. The topic is unknown as of now but can have significant
impacts down the road. This information can help sell products, help political candidates; advertisements and the list can go on. We need to know more
about this phenomenon because it will help with out communication on the web truly works. We can find out which cues work and don't while trying
to communicate a certain message to people. The authors do not state that this study advances the field of communication but it does get the
conversation started about how the Internet and communicating in this medium is very different from tradition communication face–to–face. The
authors claim that by researching cues this will further the advancement of how certain cues are used political campaigns on the web. The study does
not try to advance the theory but instead uses it vigorously to show how it works in the study.

Literary Analysis Of Miss Brill
In the short story "Miss Brill" an elderly woman sits in a park, romanticizing about all the possible scenarios that are taking place around her. This
story has many central themes, the main one, of course, being perception. Miss Brill is a very perceptive woman, which is continuously
showcased by her being able to pick up on, and closely observe, the different narratives transpiring in the park. Miss Brill was able to see the
humour in these 'performances', however, ironically, she failed to see that she herself was the subject of a joke. Through continuously
romanticizing reality, and focusing only on one's own point of view, one runs the risk of becoming oblivious to the way others view one's self.
Aforementioned, Miss Brill, an elderly woman, sits in a park within walking distance of her residence, and observes. That is essentially the sum of
the story, the shortened version. This is because she is likely very lonely, as shown by the author, literally in the name, Miss Brill. Not Ms. Brill, not
Mrs. Brill, but Miss, which is done to emphasize that she is unmarried. The purpose of this is to point out that she doesn't have anyone of significance
in her life and that she is probably lonely. This is important because it points out why someone, in their right mind, would want to sit around a park all
day and watch people. Except she doesn't just watch them, she dreams up narratives and ponders the possible conversations they're having, and gives
them a role to fill in her

  • 1. Cox et al. in 2006 (Cox, 2006) concluded that the... Cox et al. in 2006 (Cox, 2006) concluded that the perception of crowding in passenger rail is created from an "interplay of cognitive, social and environmental factors, whereas density refers to objective physical characteristics of the situation." Similarly, there is enough literature available that establishes the fact that crowding is not just dependent on physical density but also on various physical antecedents, interpersonal factors, individual characteristics and modifiers (Sundstorm, 1978). Culture also plays a role in the perception or tolerance of crowding. Evans et al. (2000) found that residential crowding has a negative effect in terms of psychological distress across different cultures; Mexican Americans and Vietnamese... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (6) Risk (safety and public health), which is strongly related to the perceived cleanliness of the carriage environment, especially the holds and the seat coverings. (7) Emotion–the perception and tolerance of crowding is influenced by a passenger's emotions prior to embarkation. (8) Behaviour of fellow passengers (e.g., loud phone conversations, the odor of unclean passengers, noisy school children, and a general lack of etiquette), which would also exaggerate crowding." (Zheng Li, 2013). "With regard to the subjective dimension of crowding, two measures are used to capture it in the literature. (i) How crowded people feel, and (ii) how crowded people rate sitting Factor analysis suggested that two crowding measures are conceptually different, where the feel crowd item (i.e., how crowded people feel) is associated with perceived density, constraint, distraction, and stress, while the environmental rating item (i.e., how crowded people rate seating) is loaded only with perceived density. The former is more sensitive to changes in physical density than the latter" (Zheng Li, 2013). (Mahudin, 2012), developed a 3 scale instrument where rail users in UK were asked the following questions – (1) Evaluation of the psychosocial aspects of the crowded situation–"How crowded is the train that you are on today?" (2) Affective reactions to the crowded situation–"How do you feel inside the train that you commute on today?" (3) Evaluation of the ambient environment of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. The Uncanny Valley And Visual Expertise Introduction The uncanny valley is a phenomenon that occurs when we see human–like beings and we notice that they have or are missing some human features. The realization that they are missing human features causes negative feelings of unease. In this paper I will first describe the uncanny valley. MacDorman & Cattopadhyay (2016) provide an interesting explanation as to why it can occur and how the effect can be influenced. MacDorman & Cattopadhyay (2016) suggests that eeriness of the uncanny valley is not because of how eerie they look. Rather, it depends on how human–like they are. Then, I will describe visual expertise. Visual expertise in this sense refers to our ability to identify faces and other objects that we have experience in perceiving. That experience is used to make top–down assumptions about what faces and their features should look like. Harel (2016) looks at visual expertise, where it works, and how it works. Lastly, I will describe the relationship between the uncanny valley and visual expertise. KГ¤tsyri, FГ¶rger, MГ¤kГ¤rГ¤inen, & Takala (2015) provide an argument in their surveying that can explain the relationship. They suggest that a possible explanation is that the visual expertise that we have with facial recognition perceives featural differences in an artificial human–like face. The difference elicit that eerie response because we see something that does look human–like, but we identify as not being human. Uncanny Valley The uncanny valley refers to ... • 3. Analysis Of Richard Cory By Paul Simon Perception Kills In society today often times individual's perceptions of materialistic objects equate success and are held at a higher standard versus appreciating health and happiness. This stands true in a timeless poem written by Paul Simon, "Richard Cory". This poem chronicles the life of a man who appears to have everything and is envied by outsiders looking in. Richard Cory is a man who, regardless of his outwards life appearance, having obtained all that individuals view as successful he eventually is found committing suicide. Simon is successful in portraying such a common misconception in a creative and nuanced way. Simon's comparison of the upper class versus the lower class gives the reader an inside look at how deceitful perceptions can truly be. Common bystanders looking into Richard Cory's life were constantly infatuated and envious, although it was slightly a facade and superficial. Simon uses tone, symbolism, and allusions, to argue the crippling effects of placing assumptions and helping readers appreciate life for its simplicity. The quote "You can never tell a book by its cover" stands true to illustrate Simon's ironic tone throughout the poem. Simon spends most of the poem indicating how many people wanted to be like "Richard Cory". They envied his manners, his wealth and his status. Everyone wished that we were in his place. Then suddenly, in the last line, we discover Cory has killed himself. This is the ultimate irony. Obviously, Cory was terribly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Matrix Essay Epistemology is the nature of knowledge. Knowledge is important when considering what is reality and what is deception. The movie "The Matrix" displays a social deception in which Neo, the main character, is caught between what he thought was once reality and a whole new world that controls everything he thought was real. If I were Neo, I would not truly be able to know that I was in the matrix. However, it is rational to believe that I am in the matrix and will eventually enter back into my reality later. The proof that that I can know that I am in the matrix and that I will return to reality comes from the responses of foundationalism, idealism, and pallibalism. To begin, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Once you know what you are sure of, you can build up knowledge from there. Many wonder how we can wonder we are not dreaming. Some agree that you cannot feel pain in a dream, but others say they have. The argument that dreams are not related to memory is strong because most people do not remember their dreams. Descartes explains that in a dream you can feel as if you are using all of your senses, but they seem to be more vague than when awake. Descartes struggles with the dream issue until he comes upon his conclusion. "'I now notice that there is a vast difference between [being asleep and being awake], in that dreams are never linked by memory with all the other actions of life as waking experiences are. ... But when I distinctly see where things come from and where and when they come to me, and when I can connect my perceptions of them with the whole of the rest of my life without a break, then I am quite certain that when I encounter these things I am not asleep but awake. (Med. 6, AT 7:89–90)' (Lex, Newman)" This dream argument attributes to how we can know anything. For Neo's sake it helps him decide weather he is really in the matrix or not. In addition to foundationalism proving that knowledge is built up from what we are certain of, idealism plays an important role of arguing that all reality is in the mind. Descartes' argument for idealism explains how knowledge of reality is possible. He goes through the process of using an example like a pen and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Sapir And Whorf Theory: How Language Influences Our... Language is an organized and uniform method of conveying information. In order for something to be considered "language" it must be intended. Language must also be part of a structured system. For example, with the English language, there are rules regarding grammatical structure. Moreover, language must be creative and open–ended allowing it to be relevant to a specific situation or time period. Because different types of language are widely used, one can assume the language influences our thoughts and perceptions of the world to a great extent. As the strong version of the Sapir and Whorf theory suggests, language serves as a mold in which our thoughts are categorized. These thoughts and perceptions allow one to create opinions on the information given based on his knowledge and ability to process the it. In an experiment done by BBC, psychologist Jules Davidoff tested how the language of the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is due to the fact that language allows us to formulate coherent thoughts thus bringing us to express them effectively. Because we are able to identify a difference between the two, one can conclude that the Himba's lack of a word for the color blue brings them to perceive the world differently than we do. Moreover, in the Dove beauty experiment, woman #1 perceives herself differently compared to how woman #2 perceives her. This is not only shown through the descriptive language they use, but also, the visual representations of the artist as he uses the descriptions to draw an image. Through the Himba experiment and the Dove beauty experiment, one can conclude that language influences our thoughts to a great extent due to the fact that our thoughts are formulated through language and therefore expressed ... • 6. Positive Perspectives As A Positive Perspective Perspective refers to a point of view that involves certain assumptions. On the other hand, perception can be defined as our recognition and interpretation of sensory information. It is the lens through which we view reality. Just like the examples I showed before, there is no fixed meaning to anything because you can always look at something in a different way and interpret different meanings. Things in themselves are inherently neutral, it is the way we perceive them that changes its meaning. For instance, your day can be awful or great depending on your perspective. Or you could view a bad mark in the test as a failure or an opportunity to develop self–resilience. The thing is, there is no right or wrong way to perceive something. However, having a positive perspective can improve your perception towards life. 2 years ago, my family and I made one of the biggest decision of our lives. We packed our bags and bid farewell to our homeland, Singapore. 7 hours later, we arrived in Adelaide where we now call home. That decision was one of the hardest decision I had to make. At that time, I was College Captain of my school and part of my school's netball team. Migrating to Adelaide would mean that not only do I have to give up my hard–earned position in the netball team, I would also be unable to compete in the prestigious national netball competition. Ultimately, I decided to move together with my family. We did not have any connections with people in Adelaide nor had any ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Analysis Of Kate Chopin 's A Respectable Woman Carson Chauncey ENC 1102 Martinez April 15, 2016 Many things one does or does not do in life are based on perception; our perception of someone, their perception of us, and even our perception of ourselves. John Moore says, "your opinion is your opinion, your perception is your perception–do not confuse them with "facts" or "truth." Wars have been fought and millions have been killed because of the inability of men to understand the idea that everybody has a different viewpoint (Quotations for Martial Artists, John Moore, p 1)." In Kate Chopin 's A Respectable Woman, perception is a major theme; for example, Mrs. Baroda 's perception of her husband's friend, Gouvernail, shifts drastically throughout the short story. Chopin's main theme of perception is displayed well because of her use of literary devices such as imagery, setting and dialogue; through these devices, Chopin reveals Mrs. Baroda's feelings and thoughts, based on the way she perceives Gouvernail before, during and after meeting him for the first time; this paper will discuss the literary devices and how Kate Chopin uses them to portray themes of freedom, identity, desire, as well as perception. In the beginning of the story, Chopin uses description in order to form Mrs. Baroda's initial perception of Gouvernail when she finds out her husband had invited him to spend a few weeks on their plantation; Mrs. Baroda was less than pleased to discover his arrival. For Neo's sake it helps him ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Perception Of Reality In The Allegory Of The Cave The issue in the philosophy of perception is explaining how perception could give someone either knowledge or a justified belief about the world. We recognize this reality to be something which we cannot change in any way. However, it can not be said about the perception of reality being completely true. The strange thing of all this is that reality may not actually exist. The reason we all think in one reality is that we only see our central point of the story. Just because someone sees something in a specific way does not make it so. He states that there are two kinds of perception: sensory perception and spiritual perception. Sensory perception is the world of aspect, in which we perceive, with the support of our sensory organs. For this reason, the world is the world of illusion. It is the world of "shadows" so in Plato's view, it is the world of falsification. The reality or truth is impossible to perceive through our senses. This extensive metaphor symbolizes how we humans have the ability to seek for philosophical knowledge or the light, but one will never experience the Truth, the sun, for the reason that it is what causes blindness for possessing too much knowledge. Although, experiencing the Truth can be achieved through spiritual perception, which is divine understanding. Spiritual enlightenment is unique for each individual, but there are some recognizable signs. First, one stops both suffering and struggling, which are also products of the mind. You will actually have trouble relating to how you used to manage to suffer, and emotions become valued messengers rather than problems. Spiritual perception can be possible when we reject the world of sensory perception, so until and unless we break all the material chains, we will not have spiritual perception. Forms of navigation can tell us a great deal about the inner workings of the mind. Also, it eplains how sensory systems across a great number of creatures present. Many of these are non– representational and non–perceptual. The foraging desert ant, for example, sets out from the nest looking for food. Initially, it chooses no specific path on its quest. It leaves the nest, then proceeds to seemingly random turns in search of its food. Upon finding what it is looking for, it doesn't retrace its steps back to the nest. The desert ant will make a near–straight line path to its home. This has been tested by way of experimental manipulation of the ant's outbound path (Muller). It ran the ant through both 2–leg/turn paths and 3–leg/turn paths, and the results were the same. The return path was then measured for accuracy and directness. Through a process called path integration, the ant calculates the most direct route back home. Path integration is the computation of distance and directional data in order to chart a vector. In this example, the ant does not use beacons or landmarks to find its way home. It makes a calculation of various stimuli and is able to calculate the necessary path. For example, the ant uses the proximal stimuli of torque stress on its joints. What does Protagoras mean when he states that "Man is the measure of all things," and why does Plato reject such a notion? Before we answer these questions, we must first ask ourselves, what is reality? Does the world have a reality independent of the one you and I perceive? Are qualities such as right and wrong, correct and incorrect entirely subjective? Or are they objective properties of people, places, and things? By "things," Protagoras is referring to the properties of people, places, objects, and processes in the universe, and perhaps even referring to the people, places, objects, and processes themselves; we will examine the implications of both interpretations. By calling humans "measure[s]," Protagoras means our perceptions dictate how people, places, objects, processes, and their properties seem to us. In order to understand reality, a series of processes and interpretations are necessary to make sense of the world to any individual. This essay seeks to explore if new–borns can detect faces, pointing out theory's strengths and weaknesses, consequently discussing previous research in order to expose evidence of babies face's 'recognition' abilities. In other words, individuals do not perceive reality but in what manner their brain understands it. In the early 1900s, Gestalt psychologists (such as Wertheimer), tried to explain the ideologies behind the understanding of sensations received in a sensory manner (Gross, 2015). Their main argument was that every individual is born able to perceive the world in specific ways, with no or little learning; that to make sense of reality, individuals had to perceive objects as being separated from other stimuli (seen as a whole) and once a differentiation between the figure and the ground was made, it then became possible to organise the ... In the present essay, I describe a second tension in Descartes?s account ofhuman error. After describing the tension, I consider Alan Nelson?s characterization of the means by which Descartes?s intended to relieve it. In cases of false perceptual judgment, is it not the faculty of intellect that so seductively offers up false propositions whose subject matter so clearly concerns our environs? As Descartes himself concedes, the objects of perception include the ideas of size, shape, and motion, and of other properties that are referred to objects outside of the mind.2 If the will and intellect, respectively, contribute the neustic and phrastic components of judgment, then it appears that the intellect (and hence God) is blameworthy in cases of erroneous perceptual judgment. II. In his paper, Descartes?s Ontology of Thought, Alan Nelson attempts to give an interpretation of Descartes?s theory of perception and judgment that extricates Descartes from the tension associated with explaining human error.3 On Nelson?s interpretation, Descartes maintained that false perceptual judgments are ultimately the result of confused ideas, which have their origin in past determinations of the will. In turn, Nelson supposes that confused sensory ideas can subsequently come to be the customary result of the impact of external objects, and thereby result in the spontaneous dispensing of false propositions by the intellect. Nelson?s interpretation has a lot going for it. First, it appears to relieve the apparent tension in Descartes?s account of error. Dillard explains how a certain individual may see something completely different than another. Each and every individual perceives situations and views in their own way, depending on their expectations, their backgrounds, their experiences, and their attitudes. When an individual expects to see something, typically that is what they see. Because they are generally focused on seeing what they expect, the individual doesn't see or notice the small things that are often important. One specific example of different perceptions is school. Students perceive school in various ways, depending on what they expect. The thought or action of going to school is perceived in various ways, depending on an individual's expectations. Because they expect opportunities and rewards to come out of school, some students perceive school as a wonderful place to be. To illustrate, Annie Dillard, in her essay, "Seeing," explains how expectations affect how a person sees, "But if you cultivate a healthy poverty and simplicity, so that finding a penny will literally make your day, then, since the world is in fact planted in pennies, you have with your poverty bought a lifetime of days" (Dillard 17). A key success for any business is to communicate with its customers better than competitors by understanding who its customers are and what they want. Instead, whenever we see parallel lines converging, we should be aware that the visual system makes a correction and we likely do see lines not of equal length – even when, in fact, they are. • 28. Essay about The Effects of Negative Weight Perception How people perceive their weight can have both positive and negative effects. Unfortunately it is more common to have negative effects. Maria Miller (2014) explains in her article, "Rock More Confidence: Sexy is a state of mind. Allow us to explain.," that having a low self–image is exceedingly damaging to oneself. It not only leads to weight gain but can also cause health problems. Others perceptions can also have a negative effect on an individual's well being. Perception can have a profound impact on a person's overall state of being. Miller (2014) explains that degrading oneself "can actually alter your physical appearance" (p. 62). Schafer and Ferraro (2011) discovered that their hypothesis were correct, they state "that people are likely to perceive themselves as heavier if they have perceived weight discrimination" (p. 92). They also explain, "perceived discrimination poses a threat to health" (Schafer & Ferraro, 2011, p. 92) and "the sense of being marginalized because of one's weight can actually contribute to steeper health declines" (p. 81). These findings are congruent with what Miller (2013) wrote. Similar to how Miller (2014) discussed that lowering the self–esteem of oneself can affect well–being; Schafer and Ferraro (2011) explain how perceptions other people have of a person's weight can affect that person's health. Miller (2014) goes on to explain, although it is not verified, how having negative perceptions of other's can lower one's self–esteem and conversely having positive perceptions can raise both parties self–esteem. A facet of well being that is every so often affected by weight is mental health. Frisco, Houle, and Martin (2010) discuss in their article, "The Image in the Mirror and the Number on the Scale: Weight, Weight Perceptions, and Adolescent Depressive Symptoms," that the stigmas that are present for people who are perceives as overweight can cause symptoms of depression (p. 216). • 29. The Two Most Important Social Roles Of A Mother And... 1.The two most important social roles that I play are the ones of a mother and a college student. I believe that because of my age and because I play both of these roles combined, people have mixed perceptions of me. Some of those people are baffled, and some of those people actually admire me because of it. These attitudes often come out in the same phrase: "I don't know how you do it." It is the tone in their voice and the look on their face that gives me the impression of how they view me. However, the only people whose perceptions I take to heart are my particular others– my daughter, my friends, and my family. 2.I definitely communicate differently in these roles, though there are similarities in each. I am very conscious of how I want to come across to both my teachers and my daughter. I communicate professionally and politely with my professors out of respect and the desire to be perceived as a dedicated and courteous student. I communicate respectfully with my daughter, but I am also an authoritative figure in her life as well as a guide. When I communicate with her, I make sure my message is getting across by choosing my words more carefully. A toddler's capacity to understand messages, meanings, and lessons is not as an adult's. I also make sure that I am not harsh when I reprimand her, because harshness acts as noise when interacting with a child. I rather make sure she understands me and how her words and actions affect others. 3.I have never been ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Exploring the Differences Between Idealism and Representative Realism The two differences between idealism and representative realism are, realists believe that objects properties such as smell and taste exist in the object but representative realists disagree and believe that these need to perceive to exist. The second difference between idealism and representative realism is for idealists things only exist when perceived, whereas representative realism means things exist if perceivable. Explain and illustrate how an idealist distinguishes between a real and hallucination experience A real experience can be defined as something that actually happens in a conscious state, which your mind... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Idealists also like to use the idea that when you are in a normal experience and state your sense data will be perfectly normal, however when you are in a hallucination experience your sense data becomes unpredictable and irregular. An example of this can be related to the words 'my guitar' as the words are a convenient way of referring to a repeated pattern of sensory experiences. Despite this fact, the argument can be seen as flawed as if you were in an hallucination it would be hard to know whether your sensory data is irregular. In conclusion idealists distinguish between real and hallucination experiences in a variety of ways, the key reason was, by showing us how a real experience is connected to a past experience meaning we can't be hallucinating. Access the view that only minds and ideas exist To access the view that only minds and ideas exist, we must look at what the Idealists believe in relation to this. In this essay I hope to sum up the general ideas that only minds and ideas exist. Idealists have the viewpoint that all experience we gain are of mental representations of the real thing. This means that nothing that we see is actually real, but simply something that is manipulated by our minds to tell us it is a certain object. Idealists also believe that there is no external world as everything is unknowable; from this we can learn that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Further, Aaker in 1991 suggested that these brand associations are the means through which consumers' memory towards a brand is developed. Aaker has studied these three concept's relations theoretically and empirically and as such the author of this thesis finds the information regarding these three concepts to be important factors that influence the consumers' perceptions. 3.1.2Brand Attitudes: Brand attitudes are considered as the positions of consumers towards a brand and their over all evaluation in terms of the brand being good or bad. • 32. The Plausible Theory Of Perception Direct Realism Or... Title Which is the more plausible theory of perception Direct Realism or Indirect Realism? Introduction In this essay I will consider two common theories that attempt to account for the problem of perception, namely Direct, and Indirect realism. I will outline several arguments against direct realism and show how the theory of indirect realism more plausably accounts for the problem of perception. Objections to the arguments against direct realism will be considered and possible counterarguments given. This paper will consider two theories of perception that attempt to account for this problem, namely Direct and Indirect realism, and argue against direct realism in favour of indirect realism, leading to the conclusion that indirect realism is the more plausable of the two. Background The nature of perception, such as sight, touch, and smell appears intuitively straightforward; direct and immediate access to a mind–independent world (naive realism). We feel as if we looking through our eyes, as if they are open windows to an external world, and when we feel the texture of objects through haptic (touch) perception, it feels as if we are directly touching the external surface of a mind–independent objecting. Sitting on a couch it intuitively feels as if one is looking at an object which exists independent of ones visual perception (e.g. the couch continues to look green and have a soft texture even if one leaves the room). The problem of perception arises from the existence ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. The Difference Between Looking And Perception In Raymond... What is the true difference between looking and perceiving? In "Cathedral", l Carver reveals human rediscovery through contrast in between characters whose perception determines the narrator changes of mind. The narrator in "Cathedral" is modeled as an ignorant person who does not seem to perceive the world with knowledge. Instead, he only has the ability to see the world with his sight in the beginning of the story. His limited view to the world reveals his lack of human experience in life thus he usually attempts to perceive life with his stereotypical view. The other two characters, including the wife and Robert, are both perceiving the world with numerous life experiences. They are the contrast to the narrator yet they are helping the narrator to rediscover human worth through their ways of perceiving the world. Robert is especially the significant person that changes the narrator mind by showing what he can do as a blind man. Raymond Carver contrasts the wife and Robert with narrator in many directions to bring out the process of how the narrator changes from an ignorant person to a man who starts to know how to perceive the world with his mind but not the eyes. The contrast between the wife and the narrator is shown through their different attitude toward Robert's visit and also the lost of his wife. Robert is an extremely important person for narrator's wife who suffers in her previous marriage and even commit suicide. The communication between the wife and Robert ... When a person thinks that they are always good, it probably means that they are are lying because no one person is perfect. Although there is no such thing as a perfect person, often times people are sometimes perceived to be perfect or better than they really are. Perception is the ability to see, hear, or become aware of something through the senses. In her article on the morality of perception, Gayman acknowledges, "Unlike mere recognition, perception requires the work of the intelligence and demands careful observation and engaged attention" (1). Being able to perceive the character of a person is necessary if a person wants to fully trust another person. In "Good Country People" by Flannery O'Connor, irony, symbolism, and characterization are used to prove that one's perception of something or someone is not always reliable. Irony is the expression of one's meaning by using language that usually means the opposite. Typically in literature, irony is used in emphatic sense. There is a multitude of irony in "Good Country People." The character's names of this story are incredibly ironic. Joy–Hulga is ironic because she is the furthest from being joyful. Another example is, Mrs. Freeman. She is not free because she has been hired and enslaved by Mrs. Hopewell. Another type of irony in "Good Country People" is how Joy–Hulga's intelligence causes ... Lindsey Stirling's "Shatter Me Featuring Lzzy Hail" and Freshly Ground's "Pot Belly," depict two different categories of perception: perceptions of oneself and perceptions of others. These perceptions, though diverse, show a modern day view of how people are characterized and viewed externally. The latter music video reveals two people and their perceptions of each other; in contrast, the first video displays one person's view of not only themselves, but also the world around them. As Lindsey Stirling's video continues, it becomes clear that the ballerina is tired and unhappy with this banal routine. An effective picture is painted of the warped perception she has of herself and, conversely, her view of the world. This is especially highlighted when she observes light coming from outside the globe and a spark of hope appears on her face. This, in turn, motivates her to shatter the glass surrounding her, but she is unsuccessful in this attempt, despite the appearance of cracks in the glass. Before long, the music stops and she becomes lifeless. Once again, the key is turned, and the ballerina reanimates and commences with what is expected. At this point in the video, the trapped ballerina catches a glimpse of a butterfly outside the globe before it morphs back into the bat she has always seen. • 37. George Berkeley Essay George Berkeley was an Irish philosopher. His philosophical beliefs were centered on one main belief, the belief that perception is the basis for existence. In doing so, he rejected the notion of a material world in favor of an immaterial world. Berkeley felt that all we really know about an object we learn from our perception of that object. He recognized that in the materialist's view the real object is independent of any perceiver's perception. The pen on my desk would exist, whether or not I was in the room to see it or have a sensory experience of it in some way. Berkeley rejected this idea. What, then, happens to an object when no one can perceive it anymore? If no one sees the tree and no one has a sensory experience of it, does it cease to exist? This idea suggests that objects pop in and out of reality when not being perceived by any human perceiver. Berkeley argues from an immaterialist standpoint and says that objects do not act in such a manner. He tries to save his theory by saying that the tree does in fact exist because God is the continuous perceiver of all things and therefore God always perceives the tree. This is an illegitimate appeal to save his philosophy. By saving his theory in this manner he "shoots himself in the foot.'; If God cannot be perceived, and if to be is to be perceived, then God cannot possibly exist. Although the existence of God can be inferred through the classical ontological argument, doing so scuttles his immaterial world. If one can have knowledge through inference, then one can infer the existence of a material world. Berkeley's answer to the existence of the tree in the quad is not convincing because his argument is circular. If something must be perceived in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The research will help researchers understand which cues communicate to people better in the Internet environment. The topic is unknown as of now but can have significant impacts down the road. This information can help sell products, help political candidates; advertisements and the list can go on. We need to know more about this phenomenon because it will help with out communication on the web truly works. We can find out which cues work and don't while trying to communicate a certain message to people. The authors do not state that this study advances the field of communication but it does get the conversation started about how the Internet and communicating in this medium is very different from tradition communication face–to–face. • 39. Literary Analysis Of Miss Brill In the short story "Miss Brill" an elderly woman sits in a park, romanticizing about all the possible scenarios that are taking place around her. This story has many central themes, the main one, of course, being perception. Miss Brill is a very perceptive woman, which is continuously showcased by her being able to pick up on, and closely observe, the different narratives transpiring in the park. Miss Brill was able to see the humour in these 'performances', however, ironically, she failed to see that she herself was the subject of a joke. Through continuously romanticizing reality, and focusing only on one's own point of view, one runs the risk of becoming oblivious to the way others view one's self. Aforementioned, Miss Brill, an elderly woman, sits in a park within walking distance of her residence, and observes. That is essentially the sum of the story, the shortened version. This is because she is likely very lonely, as shown by the author, literally in the name, Miss Brill. Not Ms. Brill, not Mrs. Brill, but Miss, which is done to emphasize that she is unmarried. The purpose of this is to point out that she doesn't have anyone of significance in her life and that she is probably lonely. This is important because it points out why someone, in their right mind, would want to sit around a park all day and watch people. Except she doesn't just watch them, she dreams up narratives and ponders the possible conversations they're having, and gives them a role to fill in her ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
