Exploring gender and social dynamics of migration in rice-based systems in South Asia
Project Objectives • Develop and test an analytical framework and toolkit to unpack the gender and social dynamics of migration in rice- based systems in South Asia – Mixed methods – Intersectional factors considered
Research Questions Migration in rice-based systems Community & Household levels • Who? • Why? • Where? • How long? • Doing what? • Macro-drivers • Social norms Effects at household/farm level • Farm labour availability and use; associated production costs • Farming systems • Farm productivity • Livelihoods portfolio • Income (incl remittances) and poverty • Food security and dietary diversity • Risk-coping ability Effects on women in the household • Roles in farming, farm management, value chains • Labour and time use, energy expenditures • Access to & control of assets, resources, services, markets, information • Decision-making – farm and household • Employment and income • Occupational choices • Health and nutrition • Social networks • Social norms
Methodology • Literature Review • Analytical framework and hypotheses development • Qual tools for FGD – refine hypotheses • Household survey – 500 HH • KII and other qual tools for gap filling and validate prelim results • Refine analytical framework and toolkit
Outputs • 2019 – Working paper with lit review and analytical framework – Toolkit and methods guide – Working paper with pilot study results – Journal article with analytical framework • 2020 – Journal article with pilot study results
