This is my seminar presentation on base isolation technique for 4th year in civil engineering. Base isolation technique is a new generation technique in earthquake resistant buildings
3. INTRODUCTION
This presentation demonstrates the
new capabilities emerging
techniques used for earthquake
resistant. In the past, seismic retrofit
was primarily applied to achieve
public safety, with engineering
solutions limited by economic and
political considerations. However,
with the development of
Performance based earthquake
engineering (PBEE), several levels of
performance objectives are
gradually recognised.
4. Prologue
In present time there are
several techniques uses for
earthquake resistant, all of
them based upon different
technologies. But at last
motive is same for all to resist
against earthquakes. Some of
them are mentioned follows.
8. Reasonbehindearthquakedestruction
Seismic waves are waves of energy that
travel through the Earth's layers, and are a
result of an earthquake, explosion, or a
volcano that gives out low-frequency
acoustic energy.Among the many types of
seismic waves, one can make a broad
distinction between body waves and surface
waves.
12. SEISMIC HAMMER CANCELATION
TECHNIQUE:-
In SHC we try to lowering the effect of seismic
waves by compensate them using shock absorbers in
homeโs base. This is done such a way, so the wall and
columns of home is completely isolated from earth
surface. By doing this walls of homes do not have any
relative motion resulted due to seismic waves, so
destruction in homes is too less.
14. RESON BEHIND SHC IDEA
As we see in everyday life many things on this earth is
isolated from earth surface, these things are only contacted with
earth surface but not bounded with earth. And when earthquake
comes these things have very less effect of earthquake compared to
other things(e.g.Cars and other automobiles, beds, and any thing
that is not directly pinned in earth). As we see these things does not
effected during earthquakes (only due to seismic waves), and can
bear energetic earthquakes compared to bounded things to earth.
15. Conclusion
From this technique we can attain high
resistance against earthquakes. But there are
several demerits also, like this technique only
can be used only for low rise buildings and
construction is hard compared to previously
earthquake resistant buildings.
