2. Language Arts
Reader s Workshop
Our Balanced Literary
program includes shared,
independent, and guided
reading opportunities every
day. The students will be
exposed to different genres
including fiction, non-fiction,
and presentations.
Writer’s Workshop
Using the Lucy Calkins Units of
Study the students will work on
narratives, essays and fiction
throughout the year.
Word Study
Each week we will be explicitly
teaching vocabulary, spelling
patterns, or grammar/conventions,
giving students the opportunity to
look closely at how words work.

3. Handwriting
Proper handwriting
techniques are stressed
at this level. Our focus is
on proper grip, posture
and letter formation. In
third grade the students
move from print to
cursive writing. The goal
is to have every student
writing in cursive by the
third trimester.

4. Mathematics
EVERYDAY MATHEMATICS
University of Chicago School Math Project
This is an enriched mathematics curriculum that empowers students and
teachers to understand mathematical content far beyond simple arithmetic.
The emphasis is to develop more meaning to math by integrating data
gathering, analysis, probability, geometry, patterns and algebra.
Mathematics becomes part of the ongoing classroom routines,
outdoor play, and the spare transitional moments that occur every day.
What you will see being sent home!
*Home Links - almost every night of the week.
*Family Letters - at the beginning of each unit.
*Assessments - sent home at the end of each unit.
