2. Pete the Cat Rocking in my School Shoes
Teacher will teach kindergarten students academic vocabulary by reading aloud Pete the Cat Rocking in My
School Shoes by Eric Litwin. Through out the reading the teacher will emphasize the vocabulary words that teach
spacial awareness and prepare students for kindergarten. Three review activities will follow instruction to reinforce
selected vocabulary. The lesson will be measured through both formative and summative assessments.
Content objective: Students will use five to ten vocabulary words when prompted in a sentence with 80% accuracy.
3. Ten target vocabulary words
Pete
cat
rocking
school
pair
library
cafeteria
playground
furry
worry
4. Three review activities
Activity 1:
The teacher will lead a discussion on “How many is in a pair?”, “Name objects that come in pairs?”, “How many body parts do you have that are pairs?”.
The students will be asked to randomly place their shoes in the middle of the learning rug. Then the students will be required to find a matching pair of
shoes. This will reinforce and define the vocabulary through kinetic learning strategies.
Activity 2:
The teacher will conduct a rhyming game that requires students to name words that rhyme with the listed vocabulary words. For example, cat, fat, pair,
chair, Pete, neat, school, drool. The teacher will write students suggestion on the dry erase board and see which word had the most rhyming words.
Activity 3:
Through songs and movement the students will sing the song included in Pete the Cat Rocking in My school shoes by Eric Litwin. They will do motions
defining the vocabulary words in the songs as they sing them. Such as, reading, eating, running, rocking, and then pointing to their school shoes. This will
aid in memorization through songs and repetition.
5. Assessments
Formative: Teacher will conduct meaningful discussions over content vocabulary during read aloud. To
gather students understanding and scaffold as needed.
Summative: Randomly choosing five of the vocabulary words for each student the teacher will send
home a homework assignment that requires the student and family to gather tangible items such as;
pictures, toys, magazine clippings, drawings or other visual descriptions to define their meaning of the
vocabulary words. The students will then explain why the chosen items represent his/her vocabulary
words. The teacher will evaluate through individual observations of presentation.
6. How would you determine whether your students understand and can use the
targeted vocabulary words?
The teacher will measure the students comprehension through on going review activities such
as, when transitioning from one location in the school to another and other formative
assessments. Ultimately, the teacher will measure the students understanding through the
observation of their summative evaluation.
