Martin Luther Reformation And Revolution
While reading about reformation and revolution I was very confused, so I had to re–read it to get a
better understanding. I felt like it was all about religious beliefs and how it all spread throughout
countries. There were many causes of the reformation.
While reading about the reformation it all started with Martin Luther. The idea of the reformation
was to purify the church and a belief that the bible should be a source of spiritual authority. Martin
Luther was the first to start using the printing press to give their inspirations and ideas to their
audience. By the end of the reformation, Lutheranism had become a religion throughout Germany.
In Switzerland, there were two major movements, zwinglianism and Calvinism. But zwingliansim

Anne Frank's life has impacted the lives of others because, her family background, Anne's time in

Jewish girl, Anne Frank. The Diary of Anne Frank has been read by millions of people around the
world since the end of World War II. The book, " The Diary of a Young Girl" is based on the life of a

Van Daan were selected to be moved to the Belsen camp in Germany. Mrs. Frank died at Auschwitz
on January 6, 1945. The Belsen camp was different from Auschwitz, where Auschwitz had been a
model of terrorized activity, Belsen was disorganized and lacking food and water. Typhus was
common among the prisoners and most people were starving. Although the Allies were winning
battle after battle in Europe, there was little to no hope for the prisoners of Belsen. There Anne
reunited with her school friend, Lies Goosens. Lies described the night when they found each other,
saying that "We cried and cried, for now there was only the barbed wire between us, nothing
more...no longer any difference in our fates." Anne's sister Margot died at the end of February or the
beginning of March, 1945. Mrs. Van Daan died at Belsen, although no one marked her death. Otto
Frank, who survived the war, saw Mr. Van Daan taken to the gas chambers in the men's barracks at
Auschwitz. Mr. Dussel died in a German camp by the name of Neuengamme. When the Germans
abandoned Auschwitz in February 1945, they took Peter Van Daan with them, and he was never

Why is It Important to Learn about the Holocaust? Essay
Learning about the Holocaust is important because it is a big part of world history. It teaches us
about the traumatic events of World War II (WWII). It also shows us how people suffered, starved,
and even died. Another thing it shows us is what events can occur when there is an abuse of power.
The word Holocaust means, "sacrifice by fire".
We have learned many different things relating tot he Holocaust. The first thing is Hitler's Rise to
Power. Hitler was a powerful and convincing speaker. He attracted lots of German's, especially
unemployed people, young people, and lower middle class people that wanted change. In January
1933, Hitler was assigned to be head of the German government. Adolf Hitler's party was called The

During WWII Germany took over a lot of Europe. German soldiers used the Blitz Krieg Tactic to
get the other troops to surrender. In this order, the German's invaded or conquered Poland, Norway
and Denmark, Western Europe, Yugoslavia, and Greece, the Soviet Union, the Volga, Stalingrad, and
France.
Anne Frank was one over a million children that died during the Holocaust. The Frank family was in
hiding for quite some time before they were found. The Nazi's finally found them and took them to
concentration camps. Anne Frank went to a total of three camps. At her first camp, she, her sister
Margot, Mrs. Van Daan, her mother, and other people that were hiding with them immediately got
separated from the boys in their family. One lady that worked at the camp told Anne she would
never see her father or anyone ever again. Anne and her sister Margot always stuck together. Sadly
though, Anne only made it to three camps. She died at age fifteen. Margot was the only one who
made it through the whole war. She recently passed away in 2010.
Anne and her family has very hard lives during the Holocaust. They treat you so poorly in the
concentration camps. The fact that they hid for a very long time instead of registering, made them
prisoners so they were treated even worse.
We learn about the Holocaust because it is an important part of history. It teaches us about a lot of
different contries and what all they have been through. It also teaches us what we lost, who we lost,

Boom! The Nazis have arrived! The Nazi, by definition is "a person who holds and acts brutally in
accordance with extreme racist or authoritarian views" (Encyclopedia def. 1). Nazi party grew into a
mass movement and ruled Germany. The Germans arrival in Denmark occurred on April 9, 1940. As
an agreement the Danish government remained, but three years later after the Danish refusal to the
German government resigns, the Germans took over and began arresting and deporting the Jewish
members. A train sent the Jewish members to Auschwitz. These trains carried in excess a number of

Bravery resembles in each of the characters of the novel. Especially we see this main ethic in
Annemarie, Ellen, Henrik, Peter and Annemarie's parents. Heroism is in the city of Denmark; it
shows that ordinary people can be brave. Annemarie helps Ellen and her parents' escape from
Denmark, risking her life many times. Johansen's ignore the dangers and do what is necessary to
protect Ellen. Annemarie's parents showed bravery while being confronted by the Nazi soldiers in
the apartment, Train and funeral. The biggest example is shown when Annemarie hides a package
and goes through the woods to deliver it to her uncle Henrik's boat. She was encountered with the
Nazi soldiers and their dogs. "Ellen was brave when she had to leave her parents and worry about
them. Also, when Ellen was in the Johansen's apartment, and had to meet with the soldiers" (Lowry
21). This package was of big importance because it had a special ingredient that kept the dogs from
finding the people hidden on Henrik's boat. Due to this package the boat traveled safely to Sweden
and Ellen, her family and other people got there safe. Fear can be a manipulative feeling that can
oppress our actions. But, how do we overcome this fear? How did this fear really treat the
individuals in Number the Stars? The fear in Number the Stars was unaffected because they kept
doing their plan for survival. Annemarie was unable to know the threat of the

William Shakespeare 's A Great British Author
A Great British Author William Shakespeare was one of the greatest poets, playwright, and actor. He
composed numerous plays, sonnets, and poems. Shakespeare was born in Stratford. His precise
birthday is not known, but it is thought to be April 23, because according to church records, he was
baptized on April 26, 1564. During this time babies were typically baptized when they were 3 days
old. Shakespeare 's father was John Shakespeare, who was a glove maker and a tradesman. His
mother was Mary Arden. Shakespeare was married to Anne Hathaway on November 1582.
Shakespeare was 18 at the time of the wedding and Anne was 26. Their first child, Susanna was
born 6 months after the wedding in 1583. In 1585 they had fraternal twins, A son, Hamnet and a
daughter named Judith. Hamnet passed away when he was 11 years old, possibly from bubonic
plague. Many believe that the play Hamlet was about Hamnet Shakespeare's son. After 3 years of
marriage, Shakespeare moved to London. His wife Anne and children stayed behind in Stratford.
One of my favorite Shakespeare plays is Hamlet. The story develops with the late King Hamlet
appearing to his child, requesting retaliation on his sibling, the King Claudius, which is an occasion
prone to irritate the Crown Prince. Over the span of the show, Hamlet perseveres through numerous
trials of his will and cognise compelling him to reinforce his feelings and the strategies by which he
will execute them. Yet, through it

King James Influence On Macbeth
Four hundred and fifty one years ago, a king was born. This king would be the ruler of not only
Scotland, but England as well. He would have seven children with his wife, and he would be a great
ruler. King James and his lineage is associated throughout the story of Macbeth.
King James was born on June 19, 1566 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Known as James VI, he was the
king of Scotland until 1625. He was the first Stuart king of England from 1603 to 1625 who would
be followed in throne by Charles I. James was the son of Mary and Henry Stewart; His father,
Henry, was the Duke of Albany. Mary was the Queen of Scots. Matthew Stewart, fourth Earl of
Lennox, and Margaret Douglas were the parents of Henry Stewart. James also had a second pair of
grandparents, James V of Scotland and Mary of Guise. Anne, the daughter of Frederick II of
Denmark, married James in 1589. Five years later they had a baby boy, Prince Henry; however, he
died fourteen months later. James and Anne had Elizabeth in 1596 and Margaret two years later.

Otto Von Bismarck Impact On Germany
The nation of Germany has had a significant impact on the history of the world. In the early
twentieth century the country presented itself as one of the strongest military powers of Europe and
a major participant of the First World War. In the mid–twentieth century, under the command of
Adolf Hitler, Germany initiated the Second World War. Today, Germany is an economically
developed nation, even with the many troubles it faced after the end of the Second World War. This
major power, which caused a stir in the twentieth century, was in most part created by the Junker
Otto von Bismarck. Bismarck used the system of realpolitik to unite the divided German states
under Prussia. Had Bismarck not been involved in the German unification, it is extremely likely that
the powerful German empire which made its mark in history would not exist and the impacts it
made on the world would be nullified.
Otto von Bismarck was the son of a Brandenburg squire and a wealthy mother. Bismarck's mother
sent him to Berlin for schooling so he could one day have a career in Prussian civil service. After ...

caused France to hold a grudge against Germany. When Germany lost the First World War, they
received severe punishments which were possibly a result of the grudge held by France. The several
reprimands on Germany also caused the rise of Hitler. As such it can be considered Otto von

Over-Exaggeration In Hamlet
In the play Hamlet, the Prince of Denmark, Hamlet has a speech where he gives advice to his actors
on how to perform on stage. He advises them to "not saw the air too much" and to control their
emotions. His main point is to be a "mirror of nature", or realistic. Hamlet doesn't believe that over–
exaggeration belongs in plays because all they are doing is entertaining the lower class who are
"capable of nothing but inexplicable dumb shows and noise." He believes that your main audience
should be the upper class who appreciate plays more since they are regular play goers. By explicitly
saying who they should be pleasing, Shakespeare is in a way suggesting a certain audience for his
plays. Hamlet also describes how actors can destroy a scene ... Show more content on

In Hamlet, the Prince of Denmark, he really emphasizes for his actors to be a "mirror of nature, or
realistic and believable. A character who fits the description of Hamlet's advice is Richard. Richard
is the vice character was born "deformed, unfinished and sent before [his] time." Because of his
physical defects, he is "determined to prove villain" and destroy the peace by becoming king. In
order to achieve his goal, he needs to deceive many people into believing he is someone else. At the
beginning of the play, Richard is able to deceive Lady Anne into becoming his wife. He tells her that
her "beauty was the cause of that effect" – being she was the reason why he needed to murder her
husband and father–in–law. In the process of making her believe this farfetched lie, he is eventually
able to make her his wife. This scene alone shows that Richard is a good enough actor to convince a
woman in mourning that she is the reason these deaths happened. Hamlet wants his actors to be
realistic enough to be just like Richard was with Lady Anne. By Richard deceiving many people in
the play, he shows that being a good actor doesn't necessarily make you a good person. Hamlet's
advice to actors can easily be seen through Richard by the way he acts towards the characters in his

people, in order to fix this, he wanted to annex people who practiced the Jewish faith out of the
country. He sent these people to concentration camps, better known as death camps. It was almost
impossible for anyone to survive. The camps consisted of gas chambers, leading poison into a room
killing everyone. The main cause of death was starvation, and the poor conditions leading to
diseases. Throughout the book, she explains how hard it was to for her, and her family to get away

King James Accomplishments
In 1957, Lord Darnley was murdered and Queen Mary was forced to renounce her throne. He made
her son King of Scotland. He became the official King of Scotland when he was one year old. James
was a devout scholar who studied the English language. The kingdom was strong and centralized
during his rule, and he eventually married Anne of Denmark. He was a devout Protestant, and
fought against the Puritans who tried to get rid of Roman practices in the church. He was not liked
much, because of favoritism, and his schemes to get an alliance with Spain. During his rule, William
Ruthven, one of the leaders of the Church of Scotland, kidnapped James, and held him captive for
almost a year. When James finally escaped, he did not take any more chances, and executed
William. With Queen Elizabeth the First aging, James realized that he had the highest chance of
becoming the King. The only problem was that his mother, Mary, was still in live. She was
prosecuted, and then executed. Once Elizabeth died, we move onto the chapter of King James' life.
In March 1603, King James was officially crowned the King of England, and officially formed
Great Britain. Though he was not very popular with the people of England, his rule was, for the
most part, steady. In 1622, during his rule, he did not realize that the people wanted to see their ...

many to become more educated, and increased the standard of education. Also, he inspired

"Whoever is happy will make others happy." This quote from Anne says a great deal about how she
lived with everyone. She must have always been happy and made other people happy who were in
the depths of their despair. "In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart."
Anne wrote this in her diary just before she was taken by the Nazi's. Moreover, Anne was a girl who
only thought about the purity and kindness in people's hearts. She recognized that people made
mistakes and did horrible, disgraceful things, but she knew that didn't mean they were an atrocious
person. She had so much compassion in her heart, she never thought or saw anything less than
kindness and pureness in people's hearts. Anne frank experienced a way of life that no one should

The Girl Who Lived Forever: Literary Analysis
Imagine being continuously being watched by German soldiers in the 1940's. That is what life was
like in the book Number the Stars and the article "The Girl Who Lived Forever." The book Number
the Stars is about a Danish family helping save their Jewish friends the Rosens from the Nazi
soldiers in Copenhagen. The book takes you through a long journey around Denmark as they fight
for their freedom. The article "The Girl Who Lived Forever" is about a young, Jewish, girl Anne
Frank who goes into hiding with her family. After two long years, the Nazis attack, and she dies in a
concentration camp. Although these texts are both different, they are still able to relate because they
are in the same time period. The book Number the Stars did not have much in common with the
article "The Girl Who Lived Forever" I was still able to pin point a few similarities. The book and
the article both took place during World War 2.It is crazy to see how much these two texts go
through the same hardships. The book was about a Danish family saving a Jewish family, which is

One of the more obvious similarities. Is that one is historical fiction, and one is non–fiction. The
book was about a Danish family helping save a Jewish family escape to Sweden. On the other hand,
the article was about a Jewish family who went into hiding for two years. And then were captured
by Nazis. One of the major differences, was that one had a happy ending, had a sad ending. In the
article the Anne Frank didn't live forever. At age 15 she died in a concentration camp two weeks
before she would have been released. Otto Frank, Anne's father, was the only one to survive in the
concentration camp. In the book, the Johansens were able to help the Rosens escape to Sweden
safely. Number the Stars and "The Girl Who Lived Forever" were both the same concept (of Jews
escaping from Germans), just different ways of

What Is Elizabeth I's Pragmatic Plan
Throughout modern European history, Elizabeth I's pragmatic reign over her nation, Bismarck's
aggressive yet sly tactics to unify Germany, and Hitler's expeditious rise to power and its
continuation show the development of politics from Machiavelli's The Prince. With England torn
apart by religious unrest brought about by Henry VIII, Edward VI, and Mary I, Elizabeth I
employed a pragmatic plan during the 1500s in order to bring about peace. In introducing a religious
policy, she devised a compromise between the theological beliefs of Protestantism and Catholicism.
Firstly, she adjusted her predecessors' title of " 'the only supreme head of the church' " to " 'only
supreme governor of this realm' " (Spielvogel 407). Though the alteration did ... Show more content

When Mary was the monarch of Scotland, the Calvinist nobles deposed of her, and she fled to
England for safety (Spielvogel 408). Since she was the daughter of Henry VIII's sister, Mary held a
legitimate claim to the throne after Elizabeth. In fact, many Catholics saw Henry's second marriage
to Anne Boleyn as improper, making Mary the more fitting queen for England (Sifakis 1). Seeing
opportunity in this woman who "had no intention of altering her faith," the Catholics plotted to place
her on the English throne (Black 68). They took part in many failed assassination plots on Elizabeth,
one of them being the Babington Plot of 1586. This nefarious plan held Mary's controversial
involvement, leading to her trial, conviction, and execution (Sifakis 2). With a resolve "to end the
threats to her regime," Elizabeth ended her cousin's life through a beheading (Spielvogel 408). Both
Elizabeth's decision to get rid of Mary and the construction of religious compromise were
Machiavellian because of her pragmatic way of thinking to ensure a successful reign. Elizabeth's
religious settlement was practical because it ignored moral values, displaying itself as a
Machiavellian plan. By creating an Anglican religion based on compromise,

The Nazi 's Under Hitlers Rule
During World War 2, the Nazi's under Hitlers rule had made a decision which was to eliminate all of
the Jews that were in Germany, and in German occupied territories. This was because they believed
Jews to be contamination the pure, aryan–Germans. Nazi's started sending the Jews to Concentration
camps in 1938. Going to a concentration camp meant death, therefore Jews started trying to hide
from Nazi officials or escape the camps. This was a dangerous task, and not everyone who did it
survived.
One German born Jew, Marie Jalowicz, made around 80 tapes, narrating her experiences of running

Some ordinary Germans fought to help the Jews avoid persecution, whether it was because of
Christian charity, friendship, love, or because they simply did not agree with the politics that were

food and supplies. The people tried to help Jews from being deported on trains, and escape the

who helped tamper with papers to keep the Nazi's off the Jews trail. Robert T Smallbones, A British

Mary Queen of Scots and Lord Darnley. However, 8 months after King James birth, his father Lord

James second father and Queen Mary's second husband. His childhood would be considered
unhappy and abnormal, due to the fact that his mother fled to England because of her guilty acts in

Shakespeare's Influence On Hamlet
It is clear that todays entertainment has lost its touch with the more classical influences on its
predecessors. However, every so often a movie comes out with the influence of shakespearen plays.
Some are very easy to compare, like Shakespeares play Romeo and Juliet and Disneys movie
Gnomeo and Juliet. Others take alittle more thought, like Shakespeares play Hamlet and Disneys
movie The Lion King. Of course these are just two similarities from many. There are no birth
records of William Shakespeare. Church records indicates that William Shakespeare was baptized at
Holy Trinity Church in Stratford–upon–Avon on April 26th, 1564. Because of this it has been
believed he was born on or near April 23rd, 1564. This has been the date in which scholars

Hans Christian Andersen's Accomplishments
Hans Christian Andersen
How many fairytales did your mother (or father) read to you as a child? Surely we've all heard the
story of the little mermaid, or the plight of the ugly duckling. The man who wrote these stories and
more was Hans Christian Andersen. He was the first Danish author to ascend from poverty and
destitution to fame and recognition in his lifetime for his stories and his great works.
(www.mamiverse.com). "Hans also gained worldwide fame for writing innovative and influential
fairytales" (www.biography.com). Hans was unable to coin up fairytales that would appeal to a wide
range of audiences. He would then insert a moral of sorts at the end of said works (for example The

Hans overcame many personal occurrences in his life. His family struggled financially for quite a

Cinderell An Outdated, Lying, Anti Feminist Tale?
Cinderella: An Outdated, Lying, Anti–Feminist Tale? Anne Sexton was a junior–college dropout
who, inspired by emotional distress, became a poet. She won the Pulitzer Prize as well as three
honorary doctorates. Her poems usually dealt with intensely personal, often feminist, subject matter
due to her tortured relationships with gender roles and the place of women in society. The movies,
women's magazines and even some women's schools supported the notion that decent women took
naturally to homemaking and mothering (Schulman). Like others of her generation, Sexton was
frustrated by this fixed feminine role society was encouraging. Her poem "Cinderella" is an example
of her views, and it also introduces a new topic of how out of touch with reality fairy tales often are.
In "Cinderella", Anne Sexton uses tone and symbolism to portray her attitude towards traditional
gender roles and the unrealistic life of fairy tales. Sexton's curt style in "Cinderella" is used to
convey a satirical tone. She approaches this piece by first telling four short stories; one references a
nursemaid "some luscious sweet from Denmark who captures the oldest son's heart" (line 7). By
choosing "luscious sweet" to explain the maid, Sexton suggests the woman is beautiful and only
uses her looks to win the man's love. Implying the maid has nothing else to offer other than her
aesthetics, Sexton questions a stereotype of women and shows her negative thoughts of this
common assumption. Sexton begins to

William Shakespeare : The Greatest Playwright Of All Times
William Shakespeare is considered the greatest playwright of all times but one of the most famous
English writers. Not only was he a talented playwright but he lived a very pivotal life; some say it 's
due to his 37 plays and 154 sonnets credited to him. His remarkable talent with the English language
has inspired many writers and playwrights. However, over the years there has been much
speculation about Shakespeare 's life regarding his religious affiliation, sexual orientation, sources of
collaboration, his true vision of how his plays should be performed, and the background to his plays
and sonnets.
William Shakespeare born April 23, 1564, was born in Stratford–upon–Avon in England a small

Very little is known about Anne because there is very little to conjecture about her. Many scholars
and authors have attempted to discover the life of Anne, although little is known many speculations
have been made.
"Some suggest a cuckolded, bumpkin wife left behind in Stratford. Others draw a more favorable
caricature, such as the love that inspired Shakespeare 's muse. Two of the most recent contributions
to the field, Stephen Greenblatt 's Will in the World and Germaine Greer 's Shakespeare 's Wife,
offer diametrically opposed viewpoints on the subject. To Greenblatt, Shakespeare hated his wife.
To Greer, Anne is a heroine systematically wronged by history." (Shakespeare Resource Center)
To lay it out simply it 's very difficult to determine any real sense of Shakespeare 's relationship with
Anne.
From the years of 1585 to 1592 very little is known about Shakespeare 's life, these years are often
referred to as "The Lost Years". We do know however the few years after his marriage. We do know
he had gone to London to work at The Globe theater. Possibly as one of the Queen 's Men whose
works were harshly anti–Catholic in a time of rising Protestantism, this often makes us question
Shakespeare 's religion. "We know he was writing poems and plays, and his involvement with
theater troupes and acting is disparagingly condemned in a 1592 pamphlet that was distributed in
London, attributed to Robert Green the playwright titled

King James I and His Journey
King James I and His Journey King James I was born on the 19th of June in 1566 and later crowned
king when he was only a year old. He grew up with many difficulties in life due to his mother being
Mary, the queen of Scots and his father Henry, the Lord of Darnley both had many things to do

learned how to read and write poetry (Butler). He later developed knowledge and love toward
literature and learning new things. The rules in Scotland were created by King James to express his
feelings and thoughts on what the rights of Kings should be. Writing the rules of Scotland helped
him to tell people what his feelings on the right way to treat a king as well as discussing the
struggles of his childhood. From the very beginning of his childhood, King James was crowned
King and his life was changed drastically from the rest of the children around his age. Later on in
life, he became interested in writing, he started to write poetry and books on life and the struggles
that he and some of his family members faced. He mostly wrote about how he had a special
relationship with God from a special viewpoint (Butler). By writing the book about his relationship

Carl Jung a Swiss psychiatrist defines archetypes as being a collectively inherited unconscious idea,
pattern of thought or image universally present in individual psyches (Jung, 1951:147). The
archetype of journey is in particular prominent in Anne Holm's I am David. This will be proven by
referring to David's ambitious journey to find his promise land, David's quest for identity, and lastly
David's search for love.
David, a twelve year old boy has lived his whole life in a concentration camp and when he escapes,
he embarks on an ambitious journey to find his promise land. As David embarks on his journey he
starts feeling discouraged "I don't know anything! How can I stay free when I don't know what
everybody else knows! I don't even know what's good to eat and what's poisonous..."(Holm,

Essay on Quicksand, by Nella Larsen
The Harlem Renaissance period in Modernistic American Literature began when Black authors
wrote about that with which they were familiar–what it is to be black. Writers such as Langston
Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, and Willa Cather proved through their writings that the African–
American lives were not only different from that of their white counter–parts, but that the writings
were relevant for the historical period and beyond. Another Harlem Renaissance writer who led the
way for future black writers was Nella Larsen, author of the story Quicksand. Nella Larsen was born

Practically everyone in the story has a hidden agenda for his or her actions. The protagonist, a 22–
year–old named Helga, was a teacher at an institute of higher learning called Naxos where the true
agenda was not education but instead was teaching Blacks their accepted status in life–lower than
that of Whites. She became convinced that she needed to leave Naxos after hearing a speech from a
visiting white preacher whose remarks she found offensive. The preacher stated that if everyone
acted like those from Naxos "there would be no race problem, because Naxos Negros knew what
was expected of them" because they "knew enough to stay in their places" (Larsen 1724). At the
beginning of the story, the reader would feel sympathy towards the workers at Naxos, who truly
believed they were preparing the students for better lives and sympathy for Helga who tried to
convince the new principle, Dr. Anderson, as to the true state of affairs. Helga failed to realize,
however, that Dr. Anderson was aware of the situation at Naxos but felt that for change to occur
there needed to be "more people like you, people with a sense of values, and proportion, an
appreciation of the rarer things of life" (Larsen 1735). Helga mistakenly became offended at Dr.
Anderson's compliment by calling her "a lady" with "dignity and breeding" because of her belief
that being able to trace one's ancestry was more important that one's actions (Larsen 1735).

Nella Larsen deals with the crisis of racial identity Helga has throughout Quicksand. She comments
on the life of a mulatto woman at a strict black southern school who wants to find herself. Larsen
deals Helga as the 'tragic mulatto' from the beginning of the novel setting clearly the views of black
racial characteristics. The tragic mulatto being a stereotypical idea of someone doomed to limbo
between being black and white. Helga exhibits, an inability to conform anywhere long enough to
discover whether she is black or white. The main issue of the novel is society's guidelines viewing
things as black or white with no healthy medium. Helga's sexuality comes into this as she is unable

It is however primarily a big concern for Helga restricting her conformity to people views of black
feminity. It is the ideals Naxos emits clouding her ideas of what is right for James and her,
reproduction is one of these issues. However, Helga's felt that "the people yapped loudly of race, of
race consciousness, of race pride"(pp.19)and this accounts for her failure to integrate. Therefore she
cannot express herself, as she is not of 'their' race and their opinion of her seemed different
throughout her time at Naxos. This is her reasoning when she speaks to Dr Anderson stating "I don't
seem to fit here."(pp.19) It is this factor that makes her leave and that makes her try and find her
identity. It is possible to say that it is Naxos and James are responsible for her sexual restrictions it
was the teachings of Naxos and their belief system that promoted eugenics in Helga's opinion. She
says that it is better not to have children due to the situations that they would be brought up in as she
sees the role she plays in society and does not want her child to experience that. Helga stuck as the
tragic mulatto makes her relationship with James impossible primarily due to the sexual frustration
which is impermissible in Naxos and also his lack of understand of her. He views her as African
American yet does not understand the differences. He just tries to part of the society that Helga
cannot fit into. The sexuality with

Hans Christian Andersen is a Danish author, who is best remembered for some of his iconic fairy
tails. Some of his most popular fairy tales include 'The Emperor's New Clothes', 'The Little

born on April 2, 1805. When he was only 11, his dad passed away and left him with his mother,
Anne Marie. Even though his family was not wealthy by any means, he was educated at a private

The Masque Of Blackness Essay
In 17th Century England, the idea of different races and cultures was new, and therefore, a novelty;
anything that differed from the norm was highly valued and sought after. Noble people and
professional actors took advantage of this and put on The Masque of Blackness, a production in
which many of its actors appeared in blackface. The masques were elaborate performances, made to
praise the monarch, with larger–than–life costumes and staging that combined songs, dances, and
acting into a presentation that depicted gods and goddesses, and pastoral settings. Although the play
is meant to be for entertainment, it begins to cross lines when the performance becomes a spectacle
of racism and exoticism. In Benjamin Jonson's The Masque of ... Show more content on

But eventually, his fame led him to King James' court. At the request of Queen Anne of Denmark,
wife to King James I of England, he wrote The Masque of Blackness. The masque was written as
the discovery of the New World and global expansion into Africa was occurring. This influx of new
cultures, races, religions, and other ideas created the perfect chance for Jonson to bring these
concepts to the court stage and please the monarchs whom the praise would be focused on.
The Masque of Blackness first premiered in 1605 in the banquet hall of Whitehall Palace in London,
England at the height of global expansion. The banquet hall itself was temporary at this time, but
was later built by the architect, Inigo Jones, who also staged The Masque of Blackness. It was
rebuilt in 1619 after the previous hall burned down in a fire and completed. The hall was used for
entertainment purposes, especially designed to put on the elaborate masques and other
performances. Queen Anne and her ladies of the court got to be the main characters of the masque
because of Anne's status and because she chose the topic. Jonson annotates in the masque: "Hence,
because it was her majesty's will to have them blackmoors at first, the invention was derived by
me." If he wanted to maintain his position and recognition, Jonson had to cater to the monarch's

1. Great destruction resulting is the extensive loss of life, especially by fire."
The Holocaust could be best described as the widespread genocide of over eleven million Jews and

already facing German invasions, quickly sided with France and Britain, forming the Allied powers.
But by then Germany, Italy, and Japan, also known as the Axis powers, had already taken most of
Europe. Specifically the countries Austria, Chechoslovakia, Albania, Poland, Denmark, Norway,
France, Belgium, Luxemburg, and the Netherlands. The fighting had just started, but the roots of
German troops had already been webbed deep into the European soil. The Allies would need a
miracle to gain a foot hold. They would need the United States of America.
On December 7, 1941, two waves of Japanese air fleets bombed the United States naval base known
as Pearl Harbor. They destroyed and damaged eleven US battle ships, one hundred

Why Is Charles I An Absolute Monarch
Charles I was an absolute monarch in England. Charles was born in Fife, Scotland, on November
19, 1600. He was the second son of James VI and Anne of Denmark. Charles was an interesting
character during the 1600s due to his major role in England's history. Charles was the cause of much
political strife along with some religious controversy. Throughout his rule, many strange events
occurred to the nation. Charles was the second son of James VI and Anne of Denmark. As the
second son, he was given the traditional title "Duke of Albany". His older brother, Henry Frederick,
was the prince of Wales and was the heir to the throne. His sister, Elizabeth Stuart, later became the
queen of Bohemia. His younger brother, Robert Stuart, was duke of Kintyre and Lorne. After Henry
died of typhoid in 1612, Charles became the heir to the throne and inherited his brother's status
within four years. His mother, Anne, died in 1619 leaving only his father to hold the throne. After
his father's death in 1625, Charles began his reign from 1625 to 1649. Charles I held the crown
jewels as one of his most precious possessions. His family crest was a lion and a unicorn holding up
a crown balanced on a shield. Charles married Henrietta Maria of France in 1625 when she was
fifteen years old. She did not like marrying Charles because she ... Show more content on

He tried to alter the way people worshipped in their churches and chapels but the people never
agreed to it and did not follow his orders. After altering the ship tax, he required all counties to pay
more money to the throne. This outraged everyone but Scotland was the most upset. This sparked a
civil war that resulted in the defeat of England. Charles reformed parliament and attempted to get
more funding in order to start a second war with Scotland. Parliament refused and the queen
convinced Charles to dissolve parliament again and rule by

Martin Luther Reformation And Revolution

  • 1. Martin Luther Reformation And Revolution While reading about reformation and revolution I was very confused, so I had to re–read it to get a better understanding. I felt like it was all about religious beliefs and how it all spread throughout countries. There were many causes of the reformation. While reading about the reformation it all started with Martin Luther. The idea of the reformation was to purify the church and a belief that the bible should be a source of spiritual authority. Martin Luther was the first to start using the printing press to give their inspirations and ideas to their audience. By the end of the reformation, Lutheranism had become a religion throughout Germany. In Switzerland, there were two major movements, zwinglianism and Calvinism. But zwingliansim ... Without Anne we would never know what life was like in the holocaust, from a personal standpoint. It came from the pages of a diary belonging to a young Jewish girl, Anne Frank. The Diary of Anne Frank has been read by millions of people around the world since the end of World War II. The book, " The Diary of a Young Girl" is based on the life of a young teenage girl, Anne Frank who had lived in Germany during World War II. The Belsen camp was different from Auschwitz, where Auschwitz had been a model of terrorized activity, Belsen was disorganized and lacking food and water. Typhus was common among the prisoners and most people were starving. Although the Allies were winning battle after battle in Europe, there was little to no hope for the prisoners of Belsen. There Anne reunited with her school friend, Lies Goosens. Lies described the night when they found each other, saying that "We cried and cried, for now there was only the barbed wire between us, nothing more...no longer any difference in our fates." Anne's sister Margot died at the end of February or the beginning of March, 1945. Mrs. Van Daan died at Belsen, although no one marked her death. Otto Frank, who survived the war, saw Mr. Van Daan taken to the gas chambers in the men's barracks at Auschwitz. Mr. Dussel died in a German camp by the name of Neuengamme. • 3. Why is It Important to Learn about the Holocaust? Essay Learning about the Holocaust is important because it is a big part of world history. It teaches us about the traumatic events of World War II (WWII). It also shows us how people suffered, starved, and even died. Another thing it shows us is what events can occur when there is an abuse of power. The word Holocaust means, "sacrifice by fire". We have learned many different things relating tot he Holocaust. The first thing is Hitler's Rise to Power. Hitler was a powerful and convincing speaker. He attracted lots of German's, especially unemployed people, young people, and lower middle class people that wanted change. In January 1933, Hitler was assigned to be head of the German government. Adolf Hitler's party was called The National ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During WWII Germany took over a lot of Europe. German soldiers used the Blitz Krieg Tactic to get the other troops to surrender. In this order, the German's invaded or conquered Poland, Norway and Denmark, Western Europe, Yugoslavia, and Greece, the Soviet Union, the Volga, Stalingrad, and France. Anne Frank was one over a million children that died during the Holocaust. The Frank family was in hiding for quite some time before they were found. The Nazi's finally found them and took them to concentration camps. Anne Frank went to a total of three camps. At her first camp, she, her sister Margot, Mrs. Van Daan, her mother, and other people that were hiding with them immediately got separated from the boys in their family. One lady that worked at the camp told Anne she would never see her father or anyone ever again. Anne and her sister Margot always stuck together. Sadly though, Anne only made it to three camps. She died at age fifteen. Margot was the only one who made it through the whole war. She recently passed away in 2010. Anne and her family has very hard lives during the Holocaust. They treat you so poorly in the concentration camps. The fact that they hid for a very long time instead of registering, made them prisoners so they were treated even worse. The Nazi, by definition is "a person who holds and acts brutally in accordance with extreme racist or authoritarian views" (Encyclopedia def. 1). Nazi party grew into a mass movement and ruled Germany. The Germans arrival in Denmark occurred on April 9, 1940. As an agreement the Danish government remained, but three years later after the Danish refusal to the German government resigns, the Germans took over and began arresting and deporting the Jewish members. Especially we see this main ethic in Annemarie, Ellen, Henrik, Peter and Annemarie's parents. Heroism is in the city of Denmark; it shows that ordinary people can be brave. Annemarie helps Ellen and her parents' escape from Denmark, risking her life many times. Johansen's ignore the dangers and do what is necessary to protect Ellen. Annemarie's parents showed bravery while being confronted by the Nazi soldiers in the apartment, Train and funeral. The biggest example is shown when Annemarie hides a package and goes through the woods to deliver it to her uncle Henrik's boat. She was encountered with the Nazi soldiers and their dogs. "Ellen was brave when she had to leave her parents and worry about them. Also, when Ellen was in the Johansen's apartment, and had to meet with the soldiers" (Lowry 21). This package was of big importance because it had a special ingredient that kept the dogs from finding the people hidden on Henrik's boat. Due to this package the boat traveled safely to Sweden and Ellen, her family and other people got there safe. Fear can be a manipulative feeling that can oppress our actions. • 5. William Shakespeare 's A Great British Author A Great British Author William Shakespeare was one of the greatest poets, playwright, and actor. He composed numerous plays, sonnets, and poems. Shakespeare was born in Stratford. His precise birthday is not known, but it is thought to be April 23, because according to church records, he was baptized on April 26, 1564. During this time babies were typically baptized when they were 3 days old. Shakespeare 's father was John Shakespeare, who was a glove maker and a tradesman. His mother was Mary Arden. Shakespeare was married to Anne Hathaway on November 1582. Shakespeare was 18 at the time of the wedding and Anne was 26. Their first child, Susanna was born 6 months after the wedding in 1583. In 1585 they had fraternal twins, A son, Hamnet and a daughter named Judith. Hamnet passed away when he was 11 years old, possibly from bubonic plague. Many believe that the play Hamlet was about Hamnet Shakespeare's son. After 3 years of marriage, Shakespeare moved to London. His wife Anne and children stayed behind in Stratford. One of my favorite Shakespeare plays is Hamlet. The story develops with the late King Hamlet appearing to his child, requesting retaliation on his sibling, the King Claudius, which is an occasion prone to irritate the Crown Prince. Over the span of the show, Hamlet perseveres through numerous trials of his will and cognise compelling him to reinforce his feelings and the strategies by which he will execute them. • 7. Otto Von Bismarck Impact On Germany The nation of Germany has had a significant impact on the history of the world. In the early twentieth century the country presented itself as one of the strongest military powers of Europe and a major participant of the First World War. In the mid–twentieth century, under the command of Adolf Hitler, Germany initiated the Second World War. Today, Germany is an economically developed nation, even with the many troubles it faced after the end of the Second World War. This major power, which caused a stir in the twentieth century, was in most part created by the Junker Otto von Bismarck. Bismarck used the system of realpolitik to unite the divided German states under Prussia. Had Bismarck not been involved in the German unification, it is extremely likely that the powerful German empire which made its mark in history would not exist and the impacts it made on the world would be nullified. • 8. Over-Exaggeration In Hamlet In the play Hamlet, the Prince of Denmark, Hamlet has a speech where he gives advice to his actors on how to perform on stage. He advises them to "not saw the air too much" and to control their emotions. His main point is to be a "mirror of nature", or realistic. Hamlet doesn't believe that over– exaggeration belongs in plays because all they are doing is entertaining the lower class who are "capable of nothing but inexplicable dumb shows and noise." He believes that your main audience should be the upper class who appreciate plays more since they are regular play goers. By explicitly saying who they should be pleasing, Shakespeare is in a way suggesting a certain audience for his plays. Hamlet also describes how actors can destroy a scene ... Because of his physical defects, he is "determined to prove villain" and destroy the peace by becoming king. He tells her that her "beauty was the cause of that effect" – being she was the reason why he needed to murder her husband and father–in–law. In the process of making her believe this farfetched lie, he is eventually able to make her his wife. This scene alone shows that Richard is a good enough actor to convince a woman in mourning that she is the reason these deaths happened. Hamlet wants his actors to be realistic enough to be just like Richard was with Lady Anne. Without Anne we would never know what life was like in the holocaust, from a personal standpoint. It came from the pages of a diary belonging to a young Jewish girl, Anne Frank. The Diary of Anne Frank has been read by hundreds of millions of people around the world since the end of World War II. What Is Elizabeth I's Pragmatic Plan Throughout modern European history, Elizabeth I's pragmatic reign over her nation, Bismarck's aggressive yet sly tactics to unify Germany, and Hitler's expeditious rise to power and its continuation show the development of politics from Machiavelli's The Prince. With England torn apart by religious unrest brought about by Henry VIII, Edward VI, and Mary I, Elizabeth I employed a pragmatic plan during the 1500s in order to bring about peace. In introducing a religious policy, she devised a compromise between the theological beliefs of Protestantism and Catholicism. Firstly, she adjusted her predecessors' title of " 'the only supreme head of the church' " to " 'only supreme governor of this realm' " (Spielvogel 407). Though the alteration did ... Since she was the daughter of Henry VIII's sister, Mary held a legitimate claim to the throne after Elizabeth. In fact, many Catholics saw Henry's second marriage to Anne Boleyn as improper, making Mary the more fitting queen for England (Sifakis 1). Seeing opportunity in this woman who "had no intention of altering her faith," the Catholics plotted to place her on the English throne (Black 68). They took part in many failed assassination plots on Elizabeth, one of them being the Babington Plot of 1586. This nefarious plan held Mary's controversial involvement, leading to her trial, conviction, and execution (Sifakis 2). With a resolve "to end the threats to her regime," Elizabeth ended her cousin's life through a beheading (Spielvogel 408). Both Elizabeth's decision to get rid of Mary and the construction of religious compromise were Machiavellian because of her pragmatic way of thinking to ensure a successful reign. Elizabeth's religious settlement was practical because it ignored moral values, displaying itself as a Machiavellian plan. By creating an Anglican religion based on compromise, ... She approaches this piece by first telling four short stories; one references a nursemaid "some luscious sweet from Denmark who captures the oldest son's heart" (line 7). By choosing "luscious sweet" to explain the maid, Sexton suggests the woman is beautiful and only uses her looks to win the man's love. Implying the maid has nothing else to offer other than her aesthetics, Sexton questions a stereotype of women and shows her negative thoughts of this common assumption. Sexton begins to recant Grimm's tale of Cinderella and the prince's ball ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 27. Essay on Quicksand, by Nella Larsen The Harlem Renaissance period in Modernistic American Literature began when Black authors wrote about that with which they were familiar–what it is to be black. Writers such as Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, and Willa Cather proved through their writings that the African– American lives were not only different from that of their white counter–parts, but that the writings were relevant for the historical period and beyond. Another Harlem Renaissance writer who led the way for future black writers was Nella Larsen, author of the story Quicksand. The protagonist, a 22– year–old named Helga, was a teacher at an institute of higher learning called Naxos where the true agenda was not education but instead was teaching Blacks their accepted status in life–lower than that of Whites. She became convinced that she needed to leave Naxos after hearing a speech from a visiting white preacher whose remarks she found offensive. The preacher stated that if everyone acted like those from Naxos "there would be no race problem, because Naxos Negros knew what was expected of them" because they "knew enough to stay in their places" (Larsen 1724). At the beginning of the story, the reader would feel sympathy towards the workers at Naxos, who truly believed they were preparing the students for better lives and sympathy for Helga who tried to convince the new principle, Dr. Anderson, as to the true state of affairs. Helga failed to realize, however, that Dr. Anderson was aware of the situation at Naxos but felt that for change to occur there needed to be "more people like you, people with a sense of values, and proportion, an appreciation of the rarer things of life" (Larsen 1735). Helga mistakenly became offended at Dr. Anderson's compliment by calling her "a lady" with "dignity and breeding" because of her belief that being able to trace one's ancestry was more important that one's actions (Larsen 1735). Therefore she cannot express herself, as she is not of 'their' race and their opinion of her seemed different throughout her time at Naxos. This is her reasoning when she speaks to Dr Anderson stating "I don't seem to fit here."(pp.19) It is this factor that makes her leave and that makes her try and find her identity. It is possible to say that it is Naxos and James are responsible for her sexual restrictions it was the teachings of Naxos and their belief system that promoted eugenics in Helga's opinion. She says that it is better not to have children due to the situations that they would be brought up in as she sees the role she plays in society and does not want her child to experience that. The Masque Of Blackness Essay In 17th Century England, the idea of different races and cultures was new, and therefore, a novelty; anything that differed from the norm was highly valued and sought after. Noble people and professional actors took advantage of this and put on The Masque of Blackness, a production in which many of its actors appeared in blackface. The masques were elaborate performances, made to praise the monarch, with larger–than–life costumes and staging that combined songs, dances, and acting into a presentation that depicted gods and goddesses, and pastoral settings. Although the play is meant to be for entertainment, it begins to cross lines when the performance becomes a spectacle of racism and exoticism. In Benjamin Jonson's The Masque of ... At the request of Queen Anne of Denmark, wife to King James I of England, he wrote The Masque of Blackness. The masque was written as the discovery of the New World and global expansion into Africa was occurring. This influx of new cultures, races, religions, and other ideas created the perfect chance for Jonson to bring these concepts to the court stage and please the monarchs whom the praise would be focused on. The Masque of Blackness first premiered in 1605 in the banquet hall of Whitehall Palace in London, England at the height of global expansion. The banquet hall itself was temporary at this time, but was later built by the architect, Inigo Jones, who also staged The Masque of Blackness. It was rebuilt in 1619 after the previous hall burned down in a fire and completed. The hall was used for entertainment purposes, especially designed to put on the elaborate masques and other performances. Queen Anne and her ladies of the court got to be the main characters of the masque because of Anne's status and because she chose the topic. It all began when Adolf Hitler, Germany's newest leader, enforced the Nuremburg Race Laws.
